SEPTEMBER 2011 President’s Message – Kevallyn Paskos
Dear NCPP, We had a great August meeting with 30 members and 15 guests in attendance! Scott Robert Lim was fantastic! Great presentation and clearly got us all excited and inspired! Scott’s team of assistants was very helpful and eager to answer questions about their available lighting products. What an awesome way to spend a couple of hours as I am sure everyone would agree. One of Scott’s assistants “Zabrina” mentioned how she enjoyed our group so much and felt the warm welcome right away. She asked if they could come back and I invited them to return for vendor’s night in November. Photographer Spotlight – Mr. Caleb Cheong! Lisa Evans graciously spoke to the group about her experiences in working with Caleb. Lisa was looking for an immediate assistant to help with a big project and Caleb contacted her immediately. He worked tirelessly without a break to get the job done and exceeded all of her expectations. Go team. Do you have someone you would like to nominate for the photographer spotlight? Send me a quick email with the information so we can keep acknowledging the people who make all the difference… Print Competition Chair volunteer - Congratulations to Caleb Cheong for stepping up and volunteering to fill the Print Comp chair position. August Print Competition had 8 Professional and 2 Aspiring photographer entries! The board members voted to decrease the number of judges for print comp primarily to keep the process more efficient. Also, each monthly guest speaker will get to select his/her “best of show”. This is just for fun but what a great compliment to the lucky recipient! Print Comp is open to every one of you so don’t be shy. I have personally challenged a handful of you to enter next month so the pressure is on. Aspiring photographers enter for FREE! Please get your digital images in before Monday at midnight prior to each meeting. This is a great way to learn and sometimes be a little humbled…it’s good for you. Best of Show Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Wayne Miller with “Anella at the Sugar Mill”, 2nd Place – Tom O’Connor with “Still Standing” and 3rd Place – none. Look for the upcoming Focal Point to read all about these artists and their work. Thank you for your submissions, they were all very nice. Night School! We are so proud to announce our first quarterly Night School in September! The lovely Ann Gordon has accepted our invitation to kick off this special event lineup (photographing animals). Details will follow. Nor Cal Photogs Meetup group – Awesome resource! Learn about upcoming NCPP guest speakers, other photography field trips and special events. Please take a few minutes to join. http://www.meetup.com/NorCalPhotogs-Meet-up/ Special thanks to Wayne Miller, Tom O’Connor, Mark Gebhardt, Malcolm Slight, Stacey Flurscheim, Denny Weigand, Caleb Cheong, Tony Gotelli and Nicole Gee for their assistance throughout the evening. “You don’t take a photograph, you make it.” Ansel Adams
Warm regards, Kevallyn NCPP Mission Statement: The Northern California Professional Photographers is an organization dedicated to advancing the business of professional photography. NCPP Proudly Presents on Tuesday, September 13th: Richard Stahlberg “A Journey to Inner space, The Zen and Mechanics of Underwater Photography” This Presentation is filled with underwater images, including • • • • • • •
’Jellyfish Lake’ in the South Pacific, Sea turtles in the waters off the island of Sipidan in the South China Sea, Manta rays from Belize, Soft corals in the waters off Palau, Majestic kelp forests from California’s own Catalina Island, Moray eels from Cozumel, and A ‘Mermaid’ print series created using my underwater images projected as backgrounds, a giant custom-made clam shell and mermaid tail. (One of my ‘Mermaid’ series prints was awarded ‘Print of the Year’ by the Northern California Professional Photographers.) This program is not only packed with images, but also with useful information on how to capture quality underwater images, equipment to use (both digital and film), and critical facts for success underwater. I also address the topic I get asked about most: Sharks! You will learn which the most dangerous types are, where to be on the watch for them, and what I did in close encounters to survive.
Bio: Richard has owned and operated Stahlberg Photography, a professional portrait studio in Martinez, for over 20 years. He is a member of PPA and a Certified Professional Photographer. Richard has been named the Northern California Professional Photographers' Photographer of the Year five times since the year 2000, and have twice been named PPA‘s Photographer of the Year. In PPA's 2011 International Print Competition, three of the images he entered went Loan, and the fourth merited. Richard won numerous local, state and international print competitions with images he has captured while scuba diving throughout the world.

SEPTEMBER 2011
Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point. Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: • Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes required for PPA. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: • PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: • Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to the Monday, (at midnight), prior to the Tuesday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. • E-mail images to printcomp@ncpponline.org. Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

Best of Show August 2011 - "Anella at the Sugar Mill" by Wayne Miller
“Anella at the Sugar Mill” – Wayne Miller This image was captured at the Old Sugar Mill –Seven Wineries, in Clarksburg, CA. It was a sugar processing facility right off the Sacramento Delta River. The old brick building is in a state of decay and being renovated at the same time. I posed the subject in front of another door that didn’t have the look that I was after. So we moved to the wood door in the image and the look and mood just jumped out. I took several shots but this one was the one that seemed to work. Shot with the Canon 5d Mk2, 24-70mm lens @ 50mm @ f/3.2 @ 1/100sec. I used a Yongnuo 460 II speedlight shot through an umbrella to put a little light on the subject and catch light in the eyes. Post processed in Lightroom 3, and Photoshop CS5 and some tweaking with Nix and Topaz Adjust 4 plug-ins.

Educational Opportunities – “Setting Up Your Monitor” by Tom O’Connor Set up your monitor so you can view the “actual” image size. In Photoshop, when I am sizing an image for print, I want to be able to see the image on the monitor at the actual print size. If the image is smaller than the monitor, you get to see the complete image all at once. If the image is larger than your monitor, you have to pan through the image, moving it around on your monitor so you can examine all parts of the image. For me, the larger I am going to print, the more important it is to look at it at actual print size. I want to see that my up sizing went well, that there is no chromatic aberration, noise etc, and I also sharpen at this view so I can see exactly what my image will look like when sharpened. This allows me to see if I have created any halos or other unwanted artifacts because of sharpening. It is also my last chance to make sure I have cloned / healed any sensor dust I might have missed when the image was smaller. In Photoshop if you hit the “H” key this will bring up the monitor view choices just above your image window. If you click on Print Size you would think that you are seeing your image at the actual size, but most likely not. Here is how to set up Photoshop so you will.
• •
Start by measuring the viewing space of your monitor. Mine for example is 20.5” x 12.8125”. Next determine what your screen resolution is set to by going to your “Display Settings”. Mine is 1920 x 1200.

SEPTEMBER 2011
Educational Opportunities – “Setting Up Your Monitor” by Tom O’Connor • • •
Now, it’s time for a little math. Divide the largest screen resolution by the largest dimension of your screen. I.e.: 1920 / 20.5 = 93.66 Divide the smallest screen resolution by the smallest dimension of your screen. I.e.: 1200 / 12.8125 = 93.66
The answer in both dimensions is 93.66, rounded to 94 pixels per inch for my monitor. • • •
Now in Photoshop go to Edit / Preferences / Units and Rulers. In the “Screen Resolution” box enter your screen resolution. In my case, 94. Click OK and you have it.
The next time you click on Print Size, it will be exactly your print size on screen.

Focusing Quick Tip: Single Point AF Methods
One of the biggest leaps towards tack sharp images you can take is using single point auto focus to hone in on your subject and nail the shot. Using the automatic grid focus system can sometimes be like throwing a handful of darts and hoping to hit the bullseye, especially when shooting at an extremely shallow depth of field like f/1.4. In fact at f/1.4, if you’re subject is 5 feet away and you’re shooting with a 50mm prime, your depth of field is only 0.09 feet! Do you want to leave .09 feet up to a handfull of focus points? No, I didn’t think so! If nailing focus is important (and it always is) then you need to start using single point auto focus. I touched on this method briefly in my past article Advanced Tips for Tack Sharp Images, but in this article I’m going to expand upon this method and give a new tip to make things a bit easier (Note: This tip was taken from my ebook over at Flatbooks.com Tack Sharp – A Step By Step Guide to Nailing Focus) NOTE: The camera used in the examples below is a Canon 5D Mark II. Most Canon cameras will have very similar menu options. For Nikon users, I’m not sure this will work. If you’re a Nikon user and know if there’s a way to do this, please let us know in the comments.

Single Point AF Method 1 (Old School):
A lot of photographers don’t even know there’s a way to use a single AF point rather than the entire grid. Of those that do know, I am going to guess that about 80-90% of them use this method here to select a single point. It doesn’t involve any custom functions or anything like that. Simply hit the button (step 1) to activate the entire grid, then move the joystick (step 2) in the direction of the focus point you want to use. Once this is done, hit the AF- ON button and you should see the AF point you chose flash red in the viewfinder and focus on whatever the point is hovering over.
Single Point AF Method 2 (New School, what the cool kids are doing):
Method 1 isn’t bad or evil but I do believe method 2 is much easier, much faster, and much more useful than the former. Method 2 involves going into your custom functions and changing some things around a bit. When you select the proper function, you will essentially disable the grid focus button as a means to selecting focus points. Now, instead of using step one to activate the grid for selecting focus points, just move the joystick at anytime to select the focus point you’d like to use. If you want to go back to the entire grid, that’s when you hit the focus grid button.

Setting Up Method 2
To set method 2 up for use, go to the custom functions located in the second to last section of menu options. Select ‘C.Fn III:Autofocus/ Drive.’ Be sure to hit the set button on the control wheel to the right to go into the next menu.
The default setting here is “0:Normal,” which means that you have to hit the grid button on the upper right part of the camera back, then select a focus point using the joystick. To change this to method 2 just scroll down to option 1 (Multocontroller direct) and select it using the SET button. Once you’ve done this, look through the viewfinder and move the joystick around. You should be selecting a new focus point each time you move it. Voila!
