OCTOBER 2011 President’s Message – Kevallyn Paskos
Dear NCPP,
Our recent meeting with guest speaker Richard Stahlberg was great! Richard has a very successful history with NCPP and PPA and knew we would be in for a fantastic voyage with his world of underwater photography. The images were full of amazing creatures and vibrant colors. Photographer Spotlight – Richard Stahlberg! We thought it was important to recognize several NCPP awards that Richard had won by votes/criteria from 2010. Environmental Portrait category - 1st Place “Captivating”, 2nd place “Enchanting” and in the Illustrative category a 1st Place with “Tango Argentino”. Richard also has through PPA, 17 print merits, a Platinum Photographer Award, prints on loan and is currently working on his education merits to receive his Master Photographer Degree! September Print Competition had 6 Professional photographer entries and 3 super judges! Print Comp is open to every one of you so consider this your invitation for next month. Aspiring photographers enter for Free! There are a variety of categories and its fun to see fresh ideas each month. The classifications are Photographic Open - environmental portraiture, wedding and illustrative images. Electronic Imaging - includes images that have been manipulated, modified or enhanced by digital or electronic means by the use of a personal computer or graphic workstation. Please get your digital images in before Monday at midnight prior to each meeting. This is such a great way to learn and be inspired! Best of Show Congratulations goes to…1st Place – Mack McNamara with “San Joaquin Fortissimo” and 2nd Place – Wayne Miller with “Diva Delivery”. Look for the upcoming Focal Point to read all about these artists and their creative work. Thank you for your print comp submissions. Nor Cal Photogs Meetup group – Awesome resource! Learn about upcoming NCPP guest speakers, other photography field trips and special events. Please take a few minutes to join. http://www.meetup.com/NorCalPhotogs-Meet-up/ Special thanks to Wayne Miller, Mike Kirwan, Tom O’Connor, Mark Gebhardt, Malcolm Slight, Laura Cottril, Stacey Flurscheim, Caleb Cheong and Nicole Gee for their assistance throughout the evening. October is just around the corner and this is my favorite time of year. I encourage members to reach out to/meetup with each other and spend some time using all that fancy equipment, new ideas and never ending supply of fun locations here in the Bay Area. Warm regards, Kevallyn I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. -Thomas Jefferson

OCTOBER 2011
Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point. Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: • Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes required for PPA. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: • PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: • Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to the Monday, (at midnight), prior to the Tuesday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. • E-mail images to printcomp@ncpponline.org. Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

Best of Show September 2011 - by Michael Day McNamara
San Joaquin Fortissimo This image is part of a continuing project on the Central Valley. In early February 2008 Kathleen and I were heading home from Bakersfield. It was late afternoon as we headed west on 7th Standard Road, about 2 miles east of Interstate 5. The tree line in silhouette was first thing that registered, and then the cloud patterns and contrails (This part of California's sky is chock full of aircraft heading between the LA basin and SFO, and includes events at Vandenberg AFB). The light from the direction of the setting sun was fairly strong, so I exposed for high light levels (fast shutter, 1/500), to get good depth of field (f/11) and wide angle setting of about 30 mm to get the whole image in one shot. I used the top of a nearby fence post to steady the camera, though at that shutter speed and Nikon's VR optics, that might have been overkill. Or not, considering the resulting detail in the tree line. Full disclosure: purists would disable VR when using a tripod. When it's time to print arrived, the steps went this way: crop to take out the empty field in the foreground, and then just a little correction to get the tree line dead level. The next steps are predictable: level and curve corrections, particularly to emphasize the trees in silhouette and the cloud formations, convert to black and white with special attention to enhancing deep blacks, and then a gentle nudge with the HDR settings in Adjustments. The HDR settings brought back the midtones. The moon/sun image migrated from near center to left. The printed results did not meet the intensity of the image I remembered from the moment. The final step applied Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0 to the file to enhance the blackness in the sky and to create a dark vignette to the left and right ends of the tree line. The work began with a fine art selection and followed with custom adjustments until the screen image fit mind's eye. The judges' keen comments during print competition will guide subsequent treatment: no HDR adjustment to develop mid tones, and less vignette in Nik Efex at the ends of the tree line. The resulting image will be submitted for PPA's 2012 International Print Competition with a nifty black mat. "Fortissimo" is typically used in music to describe or call for a loud note or passage; for this image, to describe the sense of the sky.

NCPP proudly presents: Tuesday Nov. 8th 2011 the fun starts at 7:00pm. Marriott Hotel 2355 North Main Street Walnut Creek, CA in the Contra Costa Room NCPP Alumni Night all current and past NCPP members get in free.
Lighting & Posing with Real Models - “A Hands-On Workshop” For the last NCPP meeting of 2011 we have a special treat for you. In addition to holding a vendor night, we will be holding a live “Posing & Lighting” workshop. Everyone is invited to participate and you will have the opportunity to shoot with your own camera, or use one of the class cameras which will be tethered to a laptop so you will have the opportunity to see your images in real time. So make sure your batteries are charged and you have a freshly formatted memory card. In addition to class cameras there will be a portable background, along at least three portable strobes fitted with a softbox, umbrellas, reflectors and a beauty dish, snoots, and for the adventurous there will be a Ring Flash, so lots of opportunities for creativity. In addition, flash meters will be available to test your exposures; you do shoot in manual mode – right! In addition for your shooting experience and pleasure we will have a number of models, which will be there for you to pose and to experiment with different lighting techniques as well as different posing techniques. For the adventurous, there will a couple of medium format film cameras available as well. This will be a test of your vision and exposure techniques, as there is simply no chimping. The backs will be loaded with film, so all you need to do is shoot; yours truly will develop and scan. On hand will be a number of experienced members to help, understanding lighting ratios, main light, fill light, hair light and a whole bunch more. The main purpose of this hands-on workshop is really to learn the basics, learn to direct your model and most importantly have fun while you learn. If anyone has any particular requests fee free to email Mike Kirwan at mkirwan@pacbell.net and we will see what we can do to incorporate them into the event; and don’t forget to bring your camera. OK, here is a quick peek at some of the models we have lined up for this event:
