July President’s Message – Kevallyn Paskos

2012

Dear NCPP, Hope you are all enjoying your summer wherever your travels are taking you! We live in one of the greatest places in California with so much variety in regards to scenery, events, destinations and landmarks. Just don’t forget your sunscreen! June Guest Speaker – We were so fortunate to have Scott Robert Lim, a Master Photographer Craftsman, as our featured guest speaker! Scott was a hit with the NCPP crowd with his exciting and inspirational presentation. Thank you Scott! NCPP’s Outgoing Board Member Team – I want to thank the 2011/2012 Board Members for their commitment and work that they put in to make NCPP such a great organization. They were all such a big help to me, I could not have asked for a better group of people to work with. So, thank you to Wayne Miller – Chairman of the Board and 1st VP, Malcolm Slight – Treasurer and 2nd VP, Denny Weigand – 3rd VP, Mark Gebhardt – Secretary and Nicole Gee – Hospitality. NCPP’s New Board Member Team – I am completely thrilled to introduce our new board member team! A special thank you goes to Nicole diGiorgio – 1st VP Guest Speakers, Michael Malerba – Assistant 1st VP Audio/visual/sound (Non-Board position), Malcolm Slight – 2nd VP, Lily Dong – Assistant 2nd VP (Non-Board position), Bill Baker – 3rd VP Membership, Mark Gebhardt – Treasurer, Ann Gordon – Secretary, Tod Gomes – Social Media (Facebook) (Non-Board position), Tom O’Connor – Focal Point Editor and Meeting Photographer (Non-Board position) and Wayne Miller – NCPP Webmaster. This is an exciting time with new beginnings, ideas, energy and enthusiasm. Thank you to Kevallyn from the rest of the Board and the NCPP Membership – This is kind of a different year in that Kevallyn is taking on President for two years in a row. It is not possible to thank yourself for all you did last year Kevallyn, so we are thanking you. You took on the job as President with only one year as Secretary and you have done a fantastic job! Your spirit and enthusiasm has been the spark keeping us all wanting to do a good job for you and NCPP. We look forward to another year of your leadership. NCPP is so fortunate to have been supported by so many people over the last 14 years. My experience has always been positive and NCPP showed me the ropes. The goal of our organization is to continue the synergy, teamwork and positive environment. We hope to bring a continued sense of community and education to your experience. I would like to again thank our founding members Peg Jackson, Michael Van Auken, Jim Fidelibus, Cricket Hamilton, Judy Host, Steve Brandt, Richard Stahlberg, Walter Gausch, Stephanie Piper, Sylvia Michaels and Kimberly Peterson. A special thank you to Malcolm Slight who is starting his 5th straight year on the board, 4 years as Treasurer and this coming year he is the 2nd VP managing Image Competition. Thank you Malcolm, we need more members like you! July is a special month at NCPP! Swearing in of new board member officers will be the highlight of this evening and can’t wait to step up once again as your fearless leader! Your support has been awesome and will continue to strive for excellence in all areas at NCPP. Preparing your image for "Projected" Image Comp This article will remain permanently in the Focal Point.

2012

Here are the basics for creating your "Projected Image" file. We will be setting the file type, dimensions, color space, jpg quality, pixels per inch and file name that that will qualify for NCPP Projected Image Comp. These requirements are the same as PPA with the exception in NOTE 2 below. 1. Create a file that will become the background for your image that is 4,000px Wide x 2,200px High @ 200 pixels per inch. (20" x 11") This size fits our monitor and will be displayed at its optimal. 2. The color space can be sRGB or RGB1998. 3. The file type is a jpg with a Quality setting of 10. Total file size not to exceed 3.5mb. 4. You can apply a color or pattern to this layer just as you would do for a printed image that you would have entered previously in print comp. 5. Next prepare the image that you are going to insert over the background. The color space, ppi etc needs to be the same as your background layer. 6. Size the image as you wish in either a vertical or horizontal format. The image size must be at least 80 square inches. An example is 8" x 10". The image may be placed anywhere you want to put it on the background layer. The positioning of the image on the background layer will be part of your "Presentation" score just like with Printed print comp. 7. Add a stroke or any other edge treatment to the edge of the image you want, or not. 8. All images will be shown only with the background in the "Horizontal Format". This is the same way that PPA is handling it. The monitor will not be rotated for vertical images. They will be shown just like the example images on the previous page. 9. There is to be no photographer name or studio name on the image. 10. Name your file with the following convention: • Member's First Name_Last Name_Image_Title_.jpg (Use _ for spaces). • Example file name: Bill_Jones_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg 11. More information for download or viewing at. NOTE 1: If you plan to submit any of these images to PPA, I would initially save this file as a layered PSD or TIFF. When I was done and ready to submit to NCPP, I would then save it again as a jpg with all of the requirements listed above and submit the jpg. This way if you later decide to enter this same image with PPA or re-enter with NCPP, you can open your PSD/TIFF and make any changes you want. NOTE 2: PPA Projected Submission Specifications match what is required for NCPP, except: • PPA requires your PPA# in place of your name in the file name: Example: 12345_Mount_Diablo_Sunset.jpg • Link to the PPA site for a video on “How To”: http://www.ppa.com/competitions/tutorials.php ENTRY RULES AND DEADLINES: • Cost per each image is $5.00 prior to Wednesday, (at midnight), prior to the Thursday meeting. Fee is to be paid via the NCPP PayPal link. E-mail images to mailto:mnslight@sbcglobal.net Limit of 20 Projected images allowed per meeting. This is at the discretion of the Print Chair on a month by month basis.

1st Place: “The Wharf” - by Denny Weigand “The Wharf” Not much to say about this image…it is, of course, of Fisherman’s Wharf, and was shot in HDR (High Dynamic Range). So often images of this type are “over the top”, creating a surrealistic effect. In this image I attempted to avoid the chromatic aberrations and tried to bring out the natural color. HDR programs (Photomatix, NIK’s HDR Efex Pro, etc.) tend to allow this overstatement. I used the new CS6 Photoshop’s HDR algorithms and found them to be excellent (unlike earlier versions). I was quite surprised and pleased to receive this accolade from my peers.

2nd place: “Dancer by: Dirk Wentling This image was created during her senior portrait session. As one of her clothing changes, she wore her competition ballet outfit and we ended up doing an entire series of poses for her portfolio. After spending a week with Lisa Evans and being inspired by artists such as Paul Tumason and Jeremy Sutton, I decided it was time to break out my Wacom tablet, fire up the Painter software and start working on a signature series that we could offer to our client base. After many trial and error versions, I decided to see what others thought of my progress and brought this version to NCPP for review. Imagine my surprise when it tied for 1st place with a score of 86. I feel honored that my efforts were so well received. Thank you! Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II Lens: 28-70mm 2.8L at 63mm Exposure: 1/200 sec F/20 ISO: 160 Software: Lightroom 3.6 and Painter 12 Brushes: Artists-Sargent Brush & Pencils-Soft 6B

3nd place: “Dancing in the Light” by: Bill Baker

The “Dancing in the Light" image was made with a model on the Stanford campus. She is a Russian émigré and the image was made as a casual spontaneous idea when we were right there, during another assignment. The setting and light seemed to be ideal, and I directed her in the space. She is good with posing. The image lighting is all natural; the background elements were cleaned up just a bit to simplify the setting. When I saw the setting, I knew it was a great image making spot with her involvement. F/4 at 80mm with a 70-200 and Canon 5D MarkII,

NCPP Proudly Presents August 9, 2012 – Craig Lee

2012

Food and Wine Photography

I will be speaking on my background as a newspaper photojournalist and a photographer in the Bay Area culinary food and wine scene. I will talk about concept ideas for illustrations and working with designers and editors. I will address the challenges of photographing food and making it look good. I will talk about the challenges of how I handle lighting for food and people on location and concept ideas and looking for moments. I think people will come away with ideas and techniques they can apply to their own photography challenges.

Bio: Craig Lee is an awarded photojournalist with experience photographing people, food, wine and lifestyle images. Based in San Francisco, California, Craig has worked as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle. He continues to freelance with them, as well as for multiple national newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Magazine and Sunset Magazine. His work has earned Craig recognition from the National Press Photographers Association, Pictures of the Year, Association of Food Journalist, the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association and the APA Something Personal Show. Craig’s photography work helped earned the San Francisco Chronicle recognition as the best Food and Wine section in the nation by the James Beard Foundation for the first time ever in 2004, and repeating in 2006, 2007 and 2011.
