s business owners we are always looking to make our service calls more profitable. We already have a trained technician, a stocked truck full of expensive equipment and a ton of overhead just to pull in the driveway. Why not spend a few minutes to provide a much needed service and raise your profit per stop? One way is dryer vent service. Most likely you have almost everything in your service trucks to do it already. So next question is how to sell it. Here are a few ideas, try them and see what works for you. When a homeowner is booking a sweep or other service call have your office staff ask if they want dryer vent cleaning with that. Its normally $XX, but with that service its $X Offer your guys $X for each one they add on during another service call.

Have techs wear a hat or pin that says ask me about dryer vent cleaning. I make a point to walk around every home for every service call. I then see where the vent is and can mention how plugged it looks and I happen to have time right now to fix it. It’s not just about making more money, it is a way to make people safer and that’s what we are all about.

“I wanted to write in and tell you how much I appreciate the quality of your products. We inspect approximately 20 to 30 chimneys every week and we run into every product there is on the market. I can tell you with absolute certainty that your FireGuard and Guardian products have no equals. I can say this because I've tried the other products and had to deal with many call backs due to cracks and failures as well as the complications involved with the installation. FireGuard and Guardian are simple to install and we do not get call backs. I've been using your products since 2005 and it is always a pleasure to inspect a chimney we repaired years ago and see that it still looks as good as it did the day we fixed it with your products. One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other, But How? Taylor Hill

Spark Marketer t’s not just Millennials — we all default to the belief that we’re special and unique. But do we make it easy to see what makes us special and unique?

I 6 S W E E P I N G

As an online marketing company for local service businesses, our client onboarding forms often look identical from client to client, with the exception of the business phone number, owner name, location, and business name (although even that is sometimes very similar). When our writer goes to write a website for a new client, she’s charged with hunting down the differences that the business owner rarely provides in these forms. Are business owners purposely making her job difficult? Of course not. They just default to the belief that their business, their baby, is special and unique, without going beyond the surface level to show how.

February 2019

But the real problem isn’t that this default belief makes our writer’s job harder. Here’s the real problem... Most business owners describe their business using the same five words:

1. Professional 2. Dependable 3. Family-owned 4. Certified 5. Trustworthy But what do these words really mean to your customers? They’re likely seeing your competitors describe themselves the same way, which makes those words that are so very important to you, mean so very little to them. Are we telling you you’re just like everyone else and you should stop pretending you’re not? No,

no, no! We’re telling you that you have to dig deeper to show how you’re really different. Take a look at your company, go beyond the surface, and figure out how you can paint a truly unique portrait of yourself and what you have to offer. You know you’re different -- so show everyone!

Here are a few things to start with... Use real photos of yourself and your team in your marketing and on your website. You know a stock photo when you see it, and so do your customers. While stock photos have their place, it’s not on your About page. There, you should have real photos of the people your customers will come into contact with. People like doing business with people they like, and seeing real photos of you and your team smiling and serving customers will mean a whole lot more than a few stock photos of beautiful people staging beautiful moments. Transparency and authenticity are two words that aren’t going away any time soon. Embrace them and use them to differentiate yourself. Now, before you shut this idea down because you can’t afford professional photos, pull out your smartphone. The camera you hold in your pocket is oftentimes more than sufficient if you know how to keep still and get good lighting. Plus, there are so many great (and free) photo editing apps out there to help you perfect each photo quickly and intuitively. You can even use the same filter for every photo to create a brand consistent feel. Just don’t go overboard smoothing skin or get too artsy with it. Remember, you want the photos to look good, but real.

Go deeper on your About page.

8

If you ask our writer, she’ll tell you that About pages can be some of the most boring or most interesting pages to write. It all depends on what information she’s given. If she’s only given the five words we talked about above and a founding date, she’s going to produce a good, but pretty unexciting About page for your customers to read. Why? Because she doesn’t really know anything about the company beyond what she can find on a BBB profile page. How’s she supposed to tell your story if she doesn’t know it?

S W E E P I N G February 2019

The reality is, you are your story. Your employees are your story. Your core values are your story. A really good About page should give your

customers a glimpse of yourself and your team that goes beyond words like “licensed,” “insured,” “certified,” and “professional.” Provide employee bios. Go deeper. Give your customers a reason to like, relate to, and trust you. Your story is what makes you unique, but if you don’t tell it, your customers will have a hard time telling you apart from the rest of the herd. Provide your marketing partner with truly unique info about your company. Wondering how you can help your marketing company write a website that has truly unique information about your business and tells your story well? Provide them with information! This can be things like employee manuals, lists of core values, your company mission statement, service and product brochures, and other information that you provide to customers and new team members. Think about it. Every company that’s certified by the same organization will, in theory, do a service the same way. If you don’t -- if you focus more heavily on one aspect or have extra steps that you require of your techs to ensure even better service -- let your marketing company know so they can highlight that on your website. Consider putting those real, meaningful differences at the forefront of your marketing.

10 S W E E P I N G

If you’re struggling to figure out what your strong suits are or how you truly differ from the competition, take a look at your reviews and the reviews of your top competitors. See what matters to people, what they feel you excel at, and where your competitors fall short. It’s what your customers want to know, so make it easy for them to find by spelling it out clearly in your marketing and on your website. Not everyone can be the “best,” or “most reliable and professional” chimney sweep in your area. Stop

Question

I work in a state that follows the IRC for the requirements to vent clothes dryers in residential homes. At times the code seems to contradict itself. When installing a new dryer exhaust duct, what is the proper thing to do when I find these conflicts?

12 S W E E P I N G February 2019

Answer: The short answer is to follow the code requirement that is enforced by the local AHJ. In some cases, different towns or municipalities will refer to different sections of the same code for these installations. The IRC itself also offers direction on what to do when different portions of the same code are in conflict with each other. Let’s use dryer exhaust duct support as an example. Chapter 15 of the IRC, Exhaust Systems, states in section M1502, Clothes Dryer Exhaust, subsection M1502.4.2 “exhaust ducts shall be supported at intervals not to exceed 12 ft”. But then later in the IRC, Chapter 24 Fuel Gas, section G2439 Clothes Dryer Exhaust, subsection 2439.7.2 states “exhaust ducts shall be supported at 4 foot intervals”. It could be easily argued that chapter 24 is specifically covering exhaust ducts for gasfired clothes dryers. But chapter 15 does not state gas or electric. Section 2439 also has a conflict within that section, where it states that screws or fasteners can’t penetrate the dryer exhaust duct, but then later has a provision that screws or fasteners may penetrate up to 1/8”

Guidance from the IRC is found in chapter 1, Scope and Administration section R102 Applicability. It states several things. “Where there is a conflict between a general requirement and a specific requirement, the specific requirement shall be applicable”. It goes on to state “where in any specific case different sections of this code specify different materials, methods of construction or other requirements the most restrictive shall govern”. Based on this, specific requirements govern general requirements, and more restrictive requirements will govern the less restrictive requirements. But with each case, we also have to make sure we are in compliance with the requirements enforced by the local AHJ.

Steve Scally Hi, my name is Steven T. Scally. I own and run Fireside Sweeps LLC in Fremont NH. I started this business on my own in 1999 though I have been in this industry since 1978. I learned how to sweep and repair chimneys when I was working for my Uncle at the Chimney Doctor of Concord MA. I became certified in 1981 and still hold my certification number of 401 which I am proud of. I was President of the New Hampshire Association for 4 years and now I am a current President of the North East Association of Chimney and Hearth Professionals. I am a member of the Better Business Bureau I want to be on the board of directors to help my fellow sweep and industry grow. I believe we all still have so much to learn and grow. I have over 40 years of knowledge in this business from the sweep side of the picture to the owner side of what it takes to run a successful business. I want to share with anyone who wants to learn more about this industry. I have taught numerous amounts of masonry classes as well as relining classes and how to set up staging classes. I was part of the group of great people that built the twisted chimney at our awesome Tech Center. I feel that I have so much to offer our fellow sweeps from the hands on to the business side and want to help them out. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Joseph Sauter Joseph Sauter started in the chimney industry in 1982. Joining the Guild in 1984. Became a certified sweep in approximately 1992. He also has served as a firefighter, EMT and Fire Investigator for the Wayne Township Fire Department for 12 years. Joe has previously served on both the NCSG & the CSIA Board of Directors during the years of 2001- 2004. Serving as the Ethics chairperson for both organizations. It was during this time that the first successful lawsuit was brought against a CSIA logo violator, paving the way for the success that we have had in protecting out trademark. Joe has also worked as a CSIA instructor for several years not only doing road shows but also the week long National Chimney Sweep Training School. He is currently still instructing classes and has obtained his CSIA Master Sweep credential. Now that his children are older and he has more available time to serve he would like to once again be part of the process for the future of the National Chimney Sweep Guild. He hopes that you will support his nomination in this endeavor.

It’s Time For Review, Goal Setting & Commitment

I

t is the start of a new year and in order to start properly, every business owner/ manager should stop and do a self-analysis of the previous year. This self-analysis should be geared to detect and record both the victories and the challenges of the year just completed. It may be the time for new thought processes. People commonly make resolutions at the start of the new year, why not change that to your New Year Commitments? Make your plans and map a strategy to realize each of your business and personal commitments in 2019. What parts of the business do we examine in this self-analysis? It is all parts, but I would stress that you break it down into the various segments of the business, these are as follows:

Leadership Administration Operations Sales & Marketing Personal By examining each of these 5 areas you can begin to see why failure may have occurred at times. Look at each as the spoke of a wheel, and the spokes must work together. By reviewing in this manner you can see how the wheel may not be rolling as smoothly as it could. You want the wheel of your business to run smoothly and that only occurs if each spoke is properly tuned and operating.

20 S W E E P I N G

Leadership Segment Just how strong is the leadership of the company? Could it be better? Often when there are failures within the operation

February 2019

it will fall to the leadership as the responsible party. After all the leadership did allow it to happen, didn’t it? As we look at the failures of large businesses such as Sears the failures will be traced to the leadership. What changes will you commit to as the leader in the coming year to make for a more cohesive team? After all the results of the team will often fall to the leadership of the team.

Administration Segment How well are you up to par on the business administration, and the strategies that are being employed? Again a strong look at this is required to ensure that the administration is operating up to par.

Operations Segment How is this side playing the game? Do you have waste? Do you have systems for tracking and measurement? And do you have the needed and required systems to train our team members in an ongoing and continuous manner. Are there areas you are handcuffed in ways you should not be?

Sales & Marketing Segment Are you on track with the marketing plans laid out for 2019 and are your sales goals set, with the proper processes to track and measure these with a comparative look to the budget? Is this done daily, weekly or quarterly? One must track and measure to ensure that all are operating at the highest level and delivering the maximum return.

Personal Segment

Strengths = The are internal issues

Where are you at personally? Is the business delivering to you the things you want? After all the purpose of the business is to bring the owners the means to obtain the personal things in life that they dream of. Isn’t that why you started it?

Weaknesses = Also internal issues

I would like to assist you in this self-analysis and goal setting for 2019 and have prepared a self-analysis and goal setting form for you to use. To access this form, simply go to the link below and download it. This form will assist you in setting the path for obtaining your goal and living your dreams in 2019. http://bit.ly/CVCSelfAnalysis I hope this form can assist you in setting a path for 2019 for your personal and business strategy and success. As a part of this self-analysis of the previous year, include a SWOT of the company, the letters stand for:

22 S W E E P I N G February 2019

Opportunities = These are external Threats = Also external Knowing the Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats will give you the insight to properly plan for the coming year. It may be a painful exercise, but it can deliver great results. Dedicate the time to this leadership process, the results can be a part of what sets you up for success in 2019. Russell Gardner This month, I’d like you all to meet Russell Gardner of Fiddler On The Roof in Van Nuys, California. What is a question you get asked most about being a chimney sweep/chimney sweeping/the industry? You can make a living in Los Angeles at that?!?!?! What advice do you wish you had received when you were getting started? First become a CPA, a lawyer, and a psychologist before becoming a chimney sweep! What is the biggest challenge you face on the job? What are your best strategies for overcoming it? Currently, the biggest challenge is finding new employees. We all keep an eye out for someone who would fit in, but it is difficult. Who was your most famous customer? LOL!!!! 20 years ago I could give you a long list! Now we often sign NDA (non-disclosure agreements) So I won’t mention names. Our main service areas include Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Malibu and on. My guess is that we average about 2 big name people/stars a month. One of the biggest action stars around has been one of my best customers for 25 years. What is your proudest accomplishment? Hmmmm…besides being the father of two amazing boys? I climbed Mt. Whitney, up and down in one day!

Have you ever had to make your own tool to solve a particular problem? A couple of years ago I built an artificial pancreas for my son who has Type 1 diabetes. As far as for work..... does duct tape on the end of a rod to get a screw driver out of a chase count? If so, I have built hundreds! Weirdest thing you have ever found in a chimney? A 1936 L.A. Times classified section. There was 5 bedroom house for sale, in Beverly Hills, for $5500! What do you like to do outside of work? I am an outdoors guy. I like to golf, fish, hike, ride dirt bikes with my boys, ski, wake board, anything outdoors. What is, in your opinion, the most valuable part of being a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild? I don’t love the “most valuable part” part of the question. The NCSG is an organization who’s members have transformed an industry. When I started I wore a top hat and tails and the biggest extra I sold was a $39 spark arrestor. Now my guys all have video cameras and drones! The NCSG has helped me become more professional and more profitable. I love learning what works and doesn’t for others and without the NCSG that wouldn’t be possible! Thanks, Russell! Know of someone who should be the next featured member? Submit your nominations to Annemarie Stockton at astockton@ncsg.org!

knowledge to help them succeed in this industry. There are some great business and technical courses scheduled for convention and I’m looking forward to learning from others.

by Chuck Hall, CSIA President president@csia.org

The CSIA will also be hosting an Informational Meeting on Wednesday, April 17 to update attendees on the organization, our efforts in the last year, and the future.

The National Chimney Sweep Guild’s National Convention is coming! While you’ve undoubtedly seen quite a bit of information on the convention in this edition and online, I thought it might be helpful to highlight some of CSIA’s contribution to the industry’s marquee event.

First and foremost, there are many great breakout sessions taking place at convention. While these are very much NCSG classes, they do earn CEUs towards your Certified Chimney Sweep® recertification. If someone were to attend all general sessions and one class per breakout session, they would walk away with 17 CEUs towards the needed 48 for their annual 3-year credential cycle. More importantly, they’ll walk away with a wealth of new

As in previous years, CSIA will also be hosting 1-day Review and Exam sessions for both the Certified Chimney Sweep® and the CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® credentials. This is a great opportunity for you to send your technicians to a regional event to earn (or renew) their certification. Maybe this is the year you add dryer exhaust to your services? Or maybe you have a technician or two due in the coming months. Convention registration is not required for these “pre-convention” Tuesday, April 16 events. Another convention tradition that is taking place is the CSIA Auction on Friday, April 19. This year’s theme is “superheroes.” Despite our promotion for our ADVERTISEMENT

masonry courses blaming superheroes for masonry damage, we do encourage you to grab your tights, cape, and utility belt and enjoy the festivities.

Distributors donate equipment and supplies, many sweeps do as well. There are also a lot of unique chimney-related memorabilia offered up for auction too. You can actually ship your auction items to the CSIA Tech Center in advance, if you don’t want to transport it yourself. If you are going that route, please get it there prior to Friday, April 5.

As a Mid-Atlantic Chimney Association member, which is the host regional guild for the event, I look forward to welcoming you to the East Coast, particularly Virginia, where I call home. Norfolk is a great town and CSIA is happy to be part of the NCSG National Convention in 2019.
