irst off a huge thanks goes out to all the amazing volunteers and our wonderful staff for a great week. On Tuesday the National Chimney Sweep Guild was proud to welcome Joe Sauter and Steven Scally to the Board of Directors. Wednesday after our general meeting our keynote speaker Eric Chester knocked it out of the park and set the tone for a great week. For those who made it on to the boat by 7 o’clock we enjoyed a tour of the Elizabeth River on the Spirit of Norfolk around all the ships and dry docks. The size of some of these vessels is absolutely astonishing. All the first time attendees that I sought out told me that they found the classes informative and the trade show very
exciting. I enjoyed dressing up for the auction and can’t wait to put that auction money to use work on the Prior Structure during Sweeps Week. Finally it was banquet time, I love seeing everyone dressed up each year. Congratulations to to all the award winners! Mark your calendars for Orlando in 2020 and hope to see you all there! Be safe, be profitable.

elcome the Convention Recap issue of Sweeping Magazine!
Norfolk was another great NCSG Convention! It was one for the record books, breaking the all-time record for firsttime attendees and funds raised at the CSIA Auction. Throughout the issue you will find reflections and takeaways from this year’s convention, big thank yous to our volunteers, and of course photos! As many of you know our convention photographer Blume was unable to make it to this year’s convention. We missed him dearly and can’t wait to have him back for 2020! Thankfully the Guild always has folks willing to help in a pinch. A big thank you goes to member David Kline for
stepping in and taking excellent photographs of the convention. You will see many of his photos throughout the issue. We hope you enjoy the convention recap issue and make plans to join us in Orlando in 2020!

Reflections On The Convention & The Life We Live In Between

ell, we’re back home, settled in, and still mulling over all the things we saw, heard, learned, and experienced at this year’s NCSG convention. So many great talks, so many great tools and technologies, and so many great educational opportunities…
6 S W E E P I N G
But it turns out, what sticks with us most isn’t the convention itself… (Warning: Sappiness ahead.) ...It’s the time that passes between conventions. The life between. The convention provides a snapshot of where we are after another year of life. And there’s always so much that happens to each of us in between these gatherings. New businesses are started. Other businesses wind down. Others are passed down to the next generation in the family…. Some of us are injured on the job. Others face challenges we never saw coming at
June 2019
the previous year’s convention, like health problems, employee issues, family things... Some of us have record years in business and we can’t wait to share our successes with our brothers in soot. Others have particularly challenging years and can’t wait to share our hardships with the people who listen and understand our struggles best... Some years we learn about new tools or techniques that quickly prove to be the best way to do things. Other years, we find that the best way to do a thing is to simply improve our mastery of the way it’s always been done... From year to year, the one thing that’s become evident is that nothing ever stays the same. But the convention itself is an anchor, a constant in our ever-changing lives, which is why it’s so important. Whatever we learn and live through in the time between conventions, the convention itself provides a time for the family of sweeps and business owners to come together and share...

A time to share what’s happened since we last saw each other. To share the stories of the life between. And most importantly, a time to celebrate and be grateful for what makes this industry different: the way we care for, encourage, and invest in each other. And as two guys who somehow got lucky enough to stumble into this family and become a part of this yearly gathering and celebration (even though we’re not sweeps ourselves), we view the NCSG convention as one of the highlights of our year.

Norfolk was a great host city with so much to see and do outside of convention hours, and for those who scheduled extra time. And the Spirit of Norfolk cruise at sunset was an awesome time for everyone on board!
2
The number of first-time attendees was incredible, showing such an industry-wide renewed interest in the Guild, and in convention attendance and participation. Let’s keep it going!
This time of year we take a break from the technical questions and recap the NCSG Convention. Here are just a few observations from the convention in Norfolk!
3
Vendor turn out and support for the trade show and event was awesome. We got to see many exciting new tools and products. A big thanks to all the sponsors, vendors, distributors and manufacturers! We don’t have a show without you!
4
The opening and closing keynotes gave us lots of valuable information and inspiration. The closing keynote mic dropped us with a powerful piece of wisdom: “Bosses have the titles, but leaders have the people”.
14
5
Staff did an amazing job, start to finish. A huge thanks to them, and also to all the volunteers! We don’t have convention without all of these great folks either. If you see or talk to any one of them, make sure you thank them!

a chimney system that is affectionately being called the Prior Structure, a result of Chris Prior’s commitment and dedication to educating our industry. It will be a one-of-akind structure that provides a training experience not found anywhere else.
7
Auction attendees dug deep to support the CSIA and the new training structure — very deep — all the previous records were smashed! This shows another level of support for training and education in our industry. Thanks to all the auction volunteers, and everyone that purchased something through the auction. It will make the new training structure a reality!
8
This convention reinforced that the importance of technician safety has really hit the forefront of our industry, and it’s awesome. There was even an entire booth at the trade show dedicated to rooftop safety! A big thanks to everyone who has helped pave the way and make this trend continue to grow!
9
My favorite part of this industry is the people in it, and this convention with all the attendees reminds me of how proud and honored I am to be a part of it. Thank you! New friends, old familiar faces, it was great to see everyone!

Your customers want to rely on you. They have to trust you to do that. When you say and do the things that make it possible for customers to trust you, they will buy the solution you offer if they can afford it. Remember, most people don’t care a bit about the differences in chimney liner (or any of the other things you care about) - they want to rely on someone they trust to make their problems go away. “I wanted to write in and tell you how much I appreciate the quality of your products. We inspect approximately 20 to 30 chimneys every week and we run into every product there is on the market. I can tell you with absolute certainty that your FireGuard and Guardian products have no equals. I can say this because I've tried the other products and had to deal with many call backs due to cracks and failures as well as the complications involved with the installation. FireGuard and Guardian are simple to install and we do not get call backs. I've been using your products since 2005 and it is always a pleasure to inspect a chimney we repaired years ago and see that it still looks as good as it did the day we fixed it with your products. Thank you Jay!” Dave Laverdiere - Owner of Boston Brick & Stone - Pasadena California

The Next Level
22 S W E E P I N G June 2019
The Next Level is a term expressed often by coaches and speakers, and one that we often use to describe the level of the business we aspire to reach. But there are things about The Next Level that each person on this journey needs to be aware of. Coming to this realization is one of the most important aspects of that journey. First, one must decide exactly what The Next Level is for them. The Next Level could mean many different things and have many different descriptions to different people. Even your market will have a bearing on what your Next Level is. Step 1 of the process is a firm decision of what The Next Level for you will look like. And you may already be at the level you have aspired to, there is nothing wrong with that. After all this is your Next Level and one of the things any person must do is decide of the level that fits them, their personality and their goals. So please do not think that I am trying to persuade you to derive a next level that does not fit you
and your personal desires. Before we progress further, if you have reached that pinnacle where your business is at the level you aspired to, and if your business is one that bring you the satisfaction and return you wanted to reach, let me congratulate you, as many never reached that level. If you are interested in moving to that next level you aspire to be, please read on for the processes it will take to get there. The first thing is that you need to know what Your Next Level is. Remember this is your decision, no one else’s. The Next Level should be one that provides you the return you are looking for and the satisfaction that you have reached your goals. Take a little time and paint a picture of what you want Your Next Level to look like and how long is the anticipated time frame to get there. If it is beyond three years, then you need to visualize what you want the description to be in three years as you are moving on your path. Now as you do this, be aware — many
23 S W E E P I N G June 2019
times due to market fluctuations or other outside influences, the strategy must change. The strategy is not written in stone, rather as you move forward often this will involve some modifications of the strategy. This is business, and one must guide the business in a way that meets the needs of the business and the needs of the market (which can be fickle at times). Now once you have painted this picture, the next step is to develop the plan to get there. What is involved in making this happen? Likely it will involve changes to your business model, in many ways including marketing, staffing, education, tooling, business location and other factors. Therefore, one should examine where they are as they move forward with regular review of the strategy to see if you are on schedule. A part of the strategy should be a series of small goals measured in incremental stages. The book Traction (one I highly recommend) shares that the correct stage of goals is to write them in 90-day increments, Traction refers to these as Rocs, named for the Rockefeller principals of business.
24 S W E E P I N G
Setting a strategy to move to The Next Level is all important. But from there one must set the goals in periodic stages. One must review their progress with focus and with clarity. You will often be faced with the decision of what will you give up to go up! Growing to the next level is many times like life itself — just as humans will make mistakes in the time they spend on this earth, so will a business in the time it exists.
June 2019
I recently presented a podcast on this subject matter and would invite you to listen to the audible version of this subject matter. It can be accessed at: https://soundcloud.com/ blue-collar-success-network But remember, your Next Level is the one you decide upon, and for you to allow someone else to make this decision for you is similar to a parent demanding a child enter a certain profession or life direction that does not fit the needs or the desires of the child. Make your decision of what The Next Level is to you and start the strategy of how you will turn those dreams into your business realities. Member Sally McKnight Meet long-time member Sally McKnight of The Irish Sweep, Inc. in Alameda, California. As a former board member, Sally is someone you’ve likely seen around throughout the years and is definitely someone with a unique perspective on what it takes to be a successful chimney professional. What is a question you get asked most about being a chimney sweep/chimney sweeping/ the industry? How do I know if my chimney is safe to use? Some customers are concerned about fire safety while others are concerned with structural safety and still others are concerned with seismic safety. Most customers tend to overlook the power of wind and rain, which over time causes mortar failure; I like to educate my customers and bring awareness to potential hazards created by our environment. How did you get started in the industry? I was hired by the owner of The Irish Sweep, Jim Halloran, as part time office staff. I could not communicate effectively on the telephone with customers, as I didn’t know anything about fireplaces or chimneys. So I was asked to go out into the field and clean some chimneys as a means to further my education. Eventually a partnership was formed and in 1988 I purchased the business from Jim.

What advice do you wish you had received when you were getting started? I wish I were told to become an effective communicator and learn to hunker down and read. It’s true we provide service to our customers but education is the other most important aspects of our work. I had no idea I would have to carefully craft my verbal and written skills so I could impart my knowledge to my customer. So I set out on a journey of internalizing fireplaces and chimneys and began to create my own personal dialogue on what I know to be true. I have always called upon my ability to combine classroom education and field experience. After all these years, I have developed a very clear and concise communication style that is very helpful to increase my customer’s understanding of our discovery of their fireplaces and chimneys. What is the biggest challenge you face on the job? What are your best strategies for overcoming it? There are a couple: 1. Traffic, as we live in a huge metropolis so we schedule all of our appointments via zip codes so we stay in the same location each day and reduce our travel time and fuel expenses. 2. Roof lines. The last time it snowed in the greater San Francisco - Bay Area was in 1977 but you would never know that by judging our roof lines. Architects of the past seemed to have been passionate about the grace of a beautiful, tall roof line and slate roofs. They are so difficult to approach and in many situation we use cranes or man lifts to get us to the top of the chimney. I think most industry professionals would agree, it is one thing to get on a roof but it is an entirely different thing to get to the top of the chimney. Many times once

we are on the roof, we construct platforms so we can stand and safely work. And a big thank you to other chimney professionals who have taught us how to work using mountain climbing techniques. Who was your most famous customer? Well, the only one I can tell you about is Box Skaggs; he proved to be a true diplomat. A very gracious person. Have you ever attended NCSG Annual Convention & Trade Show? If so, what was your favorite takeaway? Yes, for many years I’ve attended convention and I was even privileged enough to sit on the Board of Directors for six years. I have two favorite takeaways: 1. The comradery and friendship of my fellow sweeping professionals and vendors. 2. I enjoy the Trade Shows at our annual conventions. I like meeting with the vendors, discussing their products, as I am very particular about the product I sell and use with my customers. I like products and materials that are proven and that I can depend upon to do the job as stated in product literature. What is your proudest accomplishment? Not only being a female chimney professional who has sustained my business for the last 35 years, I’m also the proud originator of the C.S.I.A. brochure program which was started in the early 90’s and is still in use today.
Have you ever had to make your own tool to solve a particular problem? Oh boy, yes! Necessity is the mother of invention! We have a bakery as a customer and everything they bake is done in two large wood burning ovens that operate 24/7. The building was built, the bakery moved in and due to the two stories overhead the chimneys wander around inside the building defying flow before they go straight up to the roof and into a smog hog. The draft hoods are low to each oven and access was very difficult. So after struggling, we decided to cut a piece of 9mm viper rod that is attached to our drill and a power sweeping whip on the other end. Once the bottom of the chimney has been cleaned, we approach the roof and work in the opposite direction. Weirdest thing you have ever found in a chimney? A mummified rat and squirrel, glass bottles and a Mylar balloon. What do you like to do outside of work? It’s family time for me. Being on the front lines all week long, I like to be at home either cooking a family meal or baking a delicious treat. Currently I am needlepointing.

What is, in your opinion, the most valuable part of being a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild? Being a part of a national and international community that offers validation, education, mentoring and friendship.

Greetings one and all, I was recently installed as President of CSIA at the NCSG Convention in April. As my administration begins, I thought it would be appropriate to share my story and beliefs so you will know the direction we will be moving towards. The Romans referred to this as a “Tabula rasa”, or clean slate. Background I am an Eagle Scout, a career firefighter for 25 years, and have lived my entire life in Anne Arundel County Maryland. I hold a degree in Fire Science from Shepherd University and I am the product of a culture of Duty-Honor and Tradition. Future and What to Expect My administration can be

defined as a 3-legged stool. All legs are needed to support the stool for the common good and stability.
With your help we can accomplish big things. I am here to serve you, our certification holders. It will never be about me, it will be about you and CSIA.
The 3 legs will be: Education, Safety Training /Setting the Tone of the Industry and Client Services.
It’s truly an honor and pleasure to serve this fine group of people; we have a bright and limitless future. Come join me in the endeavor.
My Beliefs/Knowing Where I Stand I believe in CSIA exceptionalism —we are the industry leaders and intend on carrying that torch forever. I further believe in CSIA’s manifest destiny to always be the premier training and certification association in North America. We will constantly evolve to meet the industry’s needs; we will not be stagnant.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America is the Standard of Excellence in the Chimney and Venting Industry!
I believe in maintaining a strong strategic alliance with NCSG and NFI in order to serve their members and our clients to the best of our ability. Our industry is a family; we share and succeed together. I honor and respect that tradition. Together we are stronger, let no one divide us. In closing, the CSIA President is charged with preserving and bettering the association and I take that responsibility seriously. ADVERTISEMENT
