It’s that time of year, we have all planned for it and we know what it takes to handle all the joys and pains of the busy season. Employees are trained, tools bought, warehouse stocked, everything is set for the best year ever. Then soot happens. Soot is sometimes avoidable or can be reduced with planning, but it always happens. It always sneaks up on you at the worst time. In just the last couple weeks we have had soot in the form of rained out jobs, sick employees, washing machine flood, flat tires, subpar sales reps, missing parts, and a puppy. At least Oscar the puppy is cute soot.
Breathe, smile, and remember this time of year is what we live for, making people’s homes safer, beautiful and more efficient. Also paying off bills and filling our bank accounts. Be safe and profitable.

“I wanted to write in and tell you how much I appreciate the quality of your products. We inspect approximately 20 to 30 chimneys every week and we run into every product there is on the market. I can tell you with absolute certainty that your FireGuard and Guardian products have no equals. I can say this because I've tried the other products and had to deal with many call backs due to cracks and failures as well as the complications involved with the installation. FireGuard and Guardian are simple to install and we do not get call backs. I've been using your products since 2005 and it is always a pleasure to inspect a chimney we repaired years ago and see that it still looks as good as it did the day we fixed it with your products. Do You Think Of Your Employees As Assets Or Liabilities?
Taylor Hill
Spark Marketer or many business owners, simply hearing the word ‘employees’ causes twitching, cursing, and fits. Why? Because managing people and dealing with HR issues, insurance, opinions, and all that comes with having employees can be messy and frustrating. We get it, but if you think of your employees as your greatest liability, rather than your greatest asset, it’s time to make a change.
F 6 S W E E P I N G
But before we tell you what you stand to gain by moving your employees from your liabilities column to your assets column, let’s talk about why you’re already resisting the idea: You think it’s too costly, too timeconsuming, and will bring little benefit. Some of our greatest challenges in life come in the form of relationships. Even great relationships can be hard work at times and bring little reward, which can make us

want to distance and isolate ourselves. Why? Because as humans, we prefer easy and we typically choose the path of least resistance. It’s the same with employees. It’s easier to keep them at a distance and think of them as cogs in a machine. Recognizing that they’re people, investing in them, and getting to know them invites all the messiness that people bring — because we’re all complex and, well, less than perfect. It also takes time and work to invest in and get to know your employees, and as a business owner, you probably feel you lack time and have more than enough work as is. But we’re here to tell you it’s SO worth it, and here’s why. When you think of your employees as ‘them’ and don’t bother getting to know them or investing in them personally, you create a divide in your business, a line in the sand. That rift can leave your employees feeling separate

in their purpose and mission, discounted, unappreciated, and expendable. While it may seem like the easier option for you, anything that makes your employees feel expendable, discounted, and unappreciated certainly won’t do anything to motivate them to work harder, do better, or aim for anything higher than ‘good enough.’ And ultimately, do you want detached, apathetic, underperforming employees?
bottom line, because employees who are taken care of, respected, and appreciated don’t have much reason to steal from the business or quit and start their own business. They’ll know you’re invested in them and that you value them as members of your team — and as a result, they’ll stick around and invest in you. That means more productive, better-performing employees and less time and money spent on hiring and training.
Earl Nightingale says, “Our attitude towards others determines their attitude towards us.” Think of a past relationship, one in which the other person had made up their mind about who and what you were. Was it worth the effort to try changing their mind or was it easier to just let them believe what they believed and step into the shoes they put out for you to wear?
Some studies estimate the cost of replacing an employee to be 200+% of what the employee made annually, so in the long run, employee retention means time and money saved. But taking care of your employees and recognizing their value and importance doesn’t just encourage them to stick around and invest in you, it encourages them to invest in your customers…
Your employees know whether you see them as assets or liabilities, and your beliefs about them will either limit them or lift them up. You think they’re lazy, good-for-nothing bums, and in return, they’re simply filling the role you’ve given them. Your mindset can actually determine how much value your employees bring to your business each and every day.
When your employees care about your business and the people you serve and feel cared about themselves, they’ll transfer that to their interactions with your customers. And the better served your customers feel, the more likely they are to use your services again and tell others about your company. More invested employees = more invested customers.
So what would happen if you moved them over to the assets column? What would happen if you were inclusive and empathetic, if you invested in them and acknowledged your employees’ central importance to your company’s purpose, mission, and success? Could a shift in your mindset really have a ripple effect that would change your business?
So let’s recap: By making the shift and thinking of your employees as your greatest asset, rather than your greatest liability, you gain more invested, more loyal, more productive employees, happier, more loyal customers, and greater reach in the communities you serve. If you still think it’s not worth it, read the article again!
From experience, the answer is YES, but what does that shift look like?

When you think of your employees as your biggest asset, you take care of them and invest in them. You take the time to get to know them and to ask about their families. You’re understanding and flexible when they need to be home with a sick child. You might offer paid benefits, health insurance, retirement plans, or put time and money aside for team outings or birthday lunches. There are a whole host of ways to show your employees that you care about them and want to make sure they’re healthy, provided for, and fulfilled in their work and personal lives. While these things may sometimes feel like added expenses, they ultimately add to your

Happy Anniversary David and Dee Stoll! On October 3rd, 2018 David and Dee Stoll renewed their vows at the top of the Willis Tower to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. The couple was married in that same spot (then known as the Sears tower) in 1978 in their chimney sweep top hats and tails to help bring awareness to the then fledgling industry in the US. Their wedding was covered in more than 427 newspapers. The couple made the news again

In addition to the publicity they brought to the trade through their love story Dee is the author of the children’s book Dusty the Chimney Sweep and David was the third president of the Guild, elected in 1979. Question
Do I need to get a permit for chimney work?
12 S W E E P I N G
Answer: That is going to depend on basic factors, the biggest of which is the requirements of the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) in the municipality the work is being done in. So the first and best way to find out the answer to this question, is to always check with the building or construction official/ department in that jurisdiction. Permit requirements vary from state to state. Some states will require construction permits on all chimney liners, and other types of chimney work. But then there are states that do not have a statewide requirement, but many cities and towns within that state will have their own requirements. And within each state or jurisdiction may be specific requirements and exemptions for the type of chimney work. For example, if an existing liner or Class A chimney is being replaced, it may not require a permit, but if it's a new liner being installed or a new Class A chimney install, it could require one. Some states and jurisdictions will require permits for existing masonry firebox or factory built fireplace replacement, others will not. Some states and jurisdictions will require a permit for a masonry chimney rebuild, others will only require it if the chimney height his being raised. The type of permit may also vary. A chimney liner for a furnace may require a building, fire protection or mechanical permit, and in some jurisdictions, a combination of these.
November 2018
Other jurisdictions will utilize a plumbing permit for chimney liners, even if it's for a wood stove! If we do work in a service area that requires permits, we should use caution when the homeowner indicates that they don't want to obtain the required permit, or that they will get the permit themselves later. Even if we have a client sign a waiver that they will obtain all necessary permits, the work itself requires the permit. If we are performing work that requires a permit and none has been obtained, even with a homeowner waiver, we could be in violation of local construction laws, which we definitely don't want to be! Homeowners insurance policies often require that when applicable, any required permits are obtained. If work is performed without the necessary permit, there may not be insurance coverage if there is a loss. So if we're not sure, the best place to start is to check with the local AHJ. If there is no local AHJ, there may be regional officials enforcing state code that will approve permits and inspect the work. A few phone calls will usually help confirm if permits are required, and for which specific chimney work.

Are You Destined To Repeat The Pain
16 S W E E P I N G
ome years ago when I started my coaching practice I started using quotes from the movie Groundhog Day and even gave small plush groundhogs named Chuckie to a lot of my clients. The premise of this was that often we do the same thing day after day yet we expect different results; but in reality change does not happen and our results do not change. Eventually, this is often when one may decide they have had enough, simply throw their hands up and decide it is time to do something different, or they just decide to endure the pain The point of view that I developed for my speaking career is as follows: Often, one will prefer to keep undergoing current pain in order to prevent enduring the pain of change. For the sake of discussion, let’s say that today is your Magic Moment. Today is the day you make your decision that it is time to change. Well change requires a dedicated plan, but it also requires you to understand what are the things that frustrate you. And to do this, tracking of the pain is required. The following is a plan for you to derive exactly what are the painful things you go through that require change in order to lessen the chaos of your business, and even in your life. So how do you embark on this change, and how do you track and measure. The process involves a daily inventory of the problems you experience and not just trying to recall things from memory. I suggest that you start with the listing of the pains, basically something I
November 2018
call “a frustration listing.” Start journaling what is happening each day that you consider a failure, the things you encounter that cause frustration. Just keep a little notebook with you and as things happen, jot down a few details regarding the incident. Be sure to include what happened as well as the frustrating outcome. If you can commit to this for 30 days you’ll have a diary that will allow you a very clear picture of the types of things that are holding you back. At the end of the 30-day time frame it’s time to sit down with your diary and review the items that rob your energy, that tire you out and that cause chaos in your life. And more importantly, now it’s time to set your personal plan for change. This may be in your business or it may be in your personal life, or it may be a combination of these. Don’t be surprised if you even find at times they overlap. Once you have isolated your frustrations and chaos points you can assemble your personal plan; the plan that will build the business life and the professional life that deep down inside you want to live. Are there things in your diary that really just needed to be better planned ahead of time? Or maybe you notice a certain person popping up repeatedly – time to work on that relationship! There is a good chance that a significant number of the things that regularly frustrate you can be solved – or at least lessened – by creating new habits around those activities.
Change is an ongoing endeavor. It is often said that changing a habit can take many days. One number I have often seen for the average number of days for change in a human is 66, unless there is a radical event that forces it. The question goes back to the title of the article: are you doomed to endure the present pain and chaos or are you willing to face the pain of change to live the life you desire? The answer lies within yourself and your deep down core energy.

Meet our 2019 NCSG National Convention Opening Keynote Speaker: Eric Chester The National Chimney Sweep Guild is excited to announce Eric Chester as our 2019 NCSG National Convention Opening Keynote. Eric is an award winning speaker and bestselling author. Since 1998, Eric Chester has been the leading voice in attracting, managing, motivating, and retaining the emerging workforce. As an inthe-trenches workplace researcher and thought-leader, Chester has cracked the code on the tactics and strategies companies that are recognized as “best places to work” in their respective industries are using to win the talent wars.
On Fire at Work: How Great Companies Ignite Passion in Their People without Burning Them Out (2015) is Eric’s 4th leadership book, featuring toptier leaders of the world's best places to work who share their best practice strategies for getting employees to work harder, perform better, and stay longer. Eric Chester has delivered more than 2000 keynote speeches on three continents and is a 2004 inductee into the National Speakers Association’s acclaimed Hall of Fame. annual conventions, conferences and meetings include Harley Davidson, McDonald’s, Sprint, Great Clips, and ALCOA, to name a few. The keynote address he will be delivering at the 2019 NCSG National Convention is “Fully Staffed: Finding and Keeping Great Chimney Sweeps for Jobs They Don’t Consider Sexy.” Eric Chester’s presentation mirrors what he is conveying in his forthcoming book, Fully Staffed. As a consummate workforce researcher, awardwining speaker, and bestselling author, Eric is shining the spotlight on innovative savvy employers that have made bold moves, implemented guerrilla recruiting tactics, and are transforming the way the hiring and retention game is played and won. Most of the companies and organizations that have developed these unique strategies are not marquee brands
and household names; their techniques and methodologies will inspire organizations of any size to change the way they recruit, hire, and manage their employees. If you have had enough of the “I can’t find good people” syndrome and want to get off the hire-fire treadmill, join the revolution of the business owners, operators, leaders, and managers who proudly proclaim, “We are FULLY STAFFED.”
Take-Aways: NCSG members will discover the secrets and proven strategies that savvy employers are using to win the war for skilled workers to achieve the desired status of being FULLY STAFFED: • Increase recruiting efforts by learning 5 tactics to find the best available talent in the chimney sweep industry. • Stabilize application flow even
when compensations is less than what is offered elsewhere. • Determine ‘better fits’ to ensure those workers that are hired are safe bets for long-term employment. • On board new employees to make a lasting impression and cement their commitment form day one. • Create, develop, and reinforce the “7 pillars of an On Fire workplace culture”, i.e. Compensation, Alignment, Atmosphere, Growth, Acknowledgement, Autonomy, and Communication to improve productivity, ignite performance, and reduce employee turnover, i.e. ‘churn’. History
Project The National Chimney Sweep Guild is fortunate to share a great working relationship with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with NCSG representatives sitting on three NFPA advisory councils. This relationship dates all the way back to April 1979 when the NFPA officially asked the NCSG to consider an affiliation. Check out the article below from the Summer 1979 edition of The Chimney Sweep Guild News to find out more about that first meeting.

NFPA Representation Did you know? The NCSG looks out for your interest by sending representatives to the National Fireplace Protection Agency (NFPA) 211, 54, and 31 committees. You representatives are: • NFPA 211 Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances — Jim Brewer • NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code — Jim Brewer • NFPA 31 Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment — John Pilger
Legislative The NCSG advocates for our industry and its interest at the federal, state, local level. We also work with key stakeholders such as the Hearth, Patio, and Barbeque Association (HPBA) and state and regional chimney sweeping associations. If you see a legislative issue in your area that might affect chimney sweeps, please contact our Government Affairs Chair Jeff Keefer at info@chimneycareco.com or at (513) 248-9600.
Government Affairs eNewslink Each month, the Government Affairs edition of eNewslink arrives in your inbox with updates on current legislation, changes to codes and standards, upcoming Woodstove Changeouts, and more. If you spot legislative or code news that might be of interest to your fellow chimney sweeps, send it along to the eNewslink editor, Darcy Marlett, at dmarlett@ncsg. org.
EPA Burnwise One of the key stakeholders that we work closely with is the EPA Burnwise Program. The EPA Burnwise Program seeks to educate homeowners on how to properly and safely burn wood. This program provides chimney sweeps flyers, brochures, and even a coloring book for kids free of charge. You can distribute these to your customers to keep them safe and informed. CSIA UPDATE November 2018
Checking In with Chuck by Chuck Hall, CSIA President president@csia.org Busy season is well underway and I hope you’re having a wonder fall, soon to be winter. Many of us are probably booked several weeks ahead. While our noses are to the proverbial grindstone, we should not lose sight of the long term. Long term thinking is something that has helped me grow my own business - whether that’s doing our best to get our regular customers on a spring/summer inspection cycle, hiring and training, or what courses our team will take the next year.
www.CSIA.org
Training School, there will also be some improvements to Chimney Physics, Inspction & Report Writing, and Installing & Troubleshooting Gas Appliances. Phsyics and IRW are now being offered during the same week to help you save on travel costs.
Hands-on learning can’t be undersold, however we also understand the day and age we live in - which is why you may also want to consider adding on a CSIA-SureFire eLearning subscription for you and your team.
In addition to improving the
We’ve had quite the last few months partnering with the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). It started with a visit by a team from their office to talk with Russ Dimmitt about chimney inspections, as well as give a tour of the CSIA Tech Center. ASHI was able to put together some great content for their members detailing chimney inspections and why home inspectors should work closely with CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps® for their NFPA Level II chimney inspections during real estate transactions. Check out some of the videos either on our Facebook page or ASHI’s.
I’ve been using it at Winston’s Chimney Service and it has given our team the flexibility to learn anywhere and anytime so that we can learn how better to help our customers.
“A well-trained team doesn’t happen by accident.” CSIA is very excited about our education calendar in 2019. Russ and the team, including volunteers on committees and the CSIA board, are working hard on revising the Successful Chimney Sweeping manual, which will prompt an entire revamp of the National Chimney Sweep Training School (as well as certification exam). CSIA will keep you updated on when the new material will be released and when it will be in effect for certification exams.
Home Inspector Outreach
A well-trained team (or even a welltrained single-truck chimney technician) doesn’t happen by accident. The more you invest in education and training, and if you apply what you learn, the better you are at your position - whatever it may be: owner, technician, or office staff. Sweeps luck to you and your team for the remainder of the busy season. Chuck ADVERTISEMENT
Last month, we also hosted two sessions during the Great Lakes Chapter of ASHI’s annual convention. Russ put together a very informative presentation, which included a thermal shock demonstration Russ will be also teaching a similar course at the ASHI InspectionWorld conference in January. To improve homeowner knowledge of chimney and venting systems, we encourage all Certified Chimney Sweeps® to build local partnerships like this one.

In the month of October our team was able to put one our core values, compassion, to work in a big way. Inspired by all the good work they do within our community we decided that as a staff we wanted to raise money to support Sweep Away Cancer. This effort allowed us to not only support a great cause but also gave us a great project that everyone on staff could work on together and have little fun as well. During brainstorming we set a goal amount ($2,500) and picked an incentive for donors to give money, namely that I would volunteer to be dropped in a dunk tank by my staff if we reached
our goal. We even made a fun promotional video to get donors excited. As we got closer our whole staff volunteered to be go in the dunk tank as well and we were able to surpass our original goal with a grand total of $2,625! I would like to encourage all of you to find an organization you and your team would like to work with and lend a helping hand either through a fundraiser, donating your technical expertise to help a family or organization in need, or take a day to volunteer as a company. I think you will find the time spent more than worthwhile.
