LETTER FROM THE
President
W
ow, it’s finally here! Months of preparation and planning will culminate into the largest meeting of chimney and venting professionals of the year on March 19-23 in sunny Orlando. On behalf of the entire board, we are looking forward to seeing all of your faces and sharing knowledge and comradarie.
In this column, I am so excited to personally tell you that the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) is officially accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) for its certifications! This means the NCSG has completed a thorough, year-long evaluation of its certifications and been deemed compliant with specific standards set by a third-party organization. This is a huge accomplishment that sets the NCSG apart as offering the only accredited certifications in the chimney and venting industry. Learn more about this achievement on page 20. On the heels of this accomplishment, now is a great time to seek your Certified Chimney Professional (CCP), Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR), and/or Certified Chimney Journeyman (CCJ) certifications. We are offering three chances to take your proctored certification exam(s) at this year’s convention: Tuesday, March 19 at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm and Friday, March 22 at 8:00 am. With ANAB accreditation, you can be reassured that the NCSG certifications are a reliable, valid, and fair assessment of your competencies in the trade. The full agenda for the 2024 NCSG Convention and Trade Show begins on page 8. Many speakers and experts have stepped forward to create a very strong lineup of business, technical, customer service, and health and safety sessions for this year’s convention. A huge thank you to the speakers, exhibitors, and volunteers who have been working diligently for months to organize this year’s convention. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact NCSG Membership and Events Coordinator Brittney Burton at bburton@ncsg.org. Finally, we have a goal to get each and every attendee into a virtual reality (VR) headset to experience the NCSG’s new VR learning platform for the first time. Make sure you visit the NCSG at Booth #615 during trade show hours to be among the first to experience the new platform. THANK YOU for all of your active participation and involvement with the NCSG.

National Chimney Sweep Guild Achieves American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accreditation for Certifications
A
fter a thorough, year-long evaluation, the National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) was granted accreditation by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) in January for its certifications.
Specifically, these three NCSG certifications have achieved the most respected and internationally accepted standards for personnel certification bodies:
• Certified Chimney Professional (CCP) • Certified Chimney Reliner (CCR) • Certified Chimney Journeyman (CCJ) This achievement marks a significant milestone for the NCSG and the industry as a whole, solidifying the NCSG as the only ANAB-accredited certifications in the chimney and venting industry. “In an ever-increasing competitive market, customers are often unaware of misrepresentation of ‘certification’ versus a ‘certificate,’” said NCSG Associate Director and Certifications Coordinator Jessica Thornton. “Having a reputable third-party accreditation is necessary for credibility, protects the customer’s investment, and offers reassurance that there is independent oversight.”
ANAB accreditation is a testament to the NCSG’s unwavering commitment to excellence and dedication to upholding the highest levels of professionalism, quality, and safety. The NCSG’s accreditation signifies that it has not only met but exceeded the benchmarks set by ANSI and ANAB, distinguishing itself as a leader in the chimney and venting industry. “Accreditation is not just an award to the NCSG—it is an important step in evaluating the professional standards in the chimney and venting industry,” said NCSG Certification Committee Chair Steve Sobczak. “This accreditation means that you can have the upmost confidence in the globally recognized credentials you receive from NCSG.” Customers, regulators, and stakeholders can now place even greater trust in NCSG-certified professionals, knowing that they are backed by an organization that has achieved the highest level of accreditation in the industry. To learn more about the NCSG’s accredited certifications and get started on your journey to Journeyman, scan the QR code or visit certifiedchimneyprofessionals.com.
🧱
Being ANAB-accredited means that the NCSG has been evaluated and deemed compliant with specific standards set by ANSI and ANAB. ANSI is a private, non-profit organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus standards, while ANAB is the accrediting body that assesses conformity to these standards. “This achievement signals to the employer and customer that the credential holder has undergone a reliable, valid, and fair assessment to verify that they have the necessary competencies in their trade,” Thornton said.

e are so excited to explore “The Next Frontier” of chimney sweeping with you at the 2024 National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) Convention and Trade Show in Orlando this month!
Through strong international relations, involvement with codes and standards, and close monitoring of state and federal policies, the NCSG Advocacy Committee is committed to protecting your interests as members. Many of these efforts will be highlighted at this year’s convention.
International Relations We hope you will join our international friends on Tuesday, March 19 at 4:00 pm for “Chimney Sweeping Around the World,” moderated by Victor Imgarten, where we will discuss changes happening in the chimney sweep profession in Europe and around the world. Notably, international chimney professionals are expanding their scope of services to include safety and energy consultation. There are also ongoing preparations for the United States to host the 2025 European Federation of Chimney Sweeps (ESCHFOE) conference.
Codes and Standards Hot off the press! The 2024 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently released the NFPA 211 Standard for Chimney, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances, along with NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code. Plan to attend Jim Brewer’s session on Wednesday, March 20 at 11:00 am if you would like to learn more about these updated standards. Steven Scally will also be available for discussions on the NFPA 31 Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment. A new frontier unfolds for fireplace inserts as United Laboratories (UL) works toward establishing the first standards for their installation. Join Daniel Freeman on Thursday, March 21 at 9:45 am and Steve Panatzer on Saturday, March 23 at 11:00 am as they discuss these new standards. It’s worth noting that your feedback is welcomed for each of these standards. Plan to share your comments and suggestions with NFPA and UL after each of these sessions.
Government Relations My discussion during the membership meeting on Wednesday, March 20 at 2:00 pm will be centered around fuel choice and forced electrification. This initiative aims to educate homeowners about the impact of government regulations on their home heating options. We encourage NCSG members to get involved with the Government Affairs Committee to participate in these grassroots efforts. For realtime updates on government actions, the NCSG Facebook discussion page is a valuable resource. I look forward to exploring “The Next Frontier” with you!

Musings

o you like change? Do you like to try new things in your business? If not—why? The number one answer for most people is—they are afraid. It’s a fact—most people are afraid of trying something new! And it makes no sense. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Choose action over fear. Inaction gets you nowhere.
We all hate discomfort. Stepping outside our comfort zone is downright painful for most of us. But this is the area that tends to produce the most fruit in our lives and business! So, how do we learn to embrace the discomfort? How do we learn to let it teach and reward us in exchange? Let me ask you another question. Did you learn how to ride a bike growing up? Of course you did! Here are some things for you to consider. When you first tried to ride a bike, did it feel natural? Did it feel normal? Were you good at it right away? Heck no, you weren’t! Did it require practice? A lot! Of course it didn’t feel natural the first time you tried riding a bike. But you pushed through the uncomfortable feelings and learned. It became natural—with a lot of practice. Very soon, hundreds of chimney sweep professionals will convene at the 2024 National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, FL. If you are attending, here is my advice. Learn how to ride a new bike! Pay attention and take notes in the classes that you attend. Then speak to the instructors afterward. Ask questions to the vendors at the trade show. I promise—they will all be happy to talk to you, answer questions, and offer guidance. Asking questions can be outside of your comfort zone, but just like learning how to ride a bike, it will become natural and comfortable with practice. Now step out of your comfort zone and learn how to ride a new bike! And say “hello” in Orlando!

Ladder Safety
National Ladder Safety Month Advocates for Safe Ladder Practices and Injury Prevention
L
Joe Zgrabik, Account Executive, American Ladder Institute
adders are a common household tool, used in all seasons for everything from spring cleaning to holiday decorating. They are also vital to jobsites for many industries— especially the chimney and venting industry.
Each March, the American Ladder Institute (ALI) promotes awareness of ladder safety through a month-long National Ladder Safety Month campaign. This annual initiative works to lessen ladder accidents fatalities at work and in the home. The ALI believes ladder accidents are largely preventable through proper training and education. Choosing the proper ladder for the job is the first step to ensuring you have a safe climb. Most jobsites use extension and articulated ladders. Extension ladders must be long enough to provide at least 3 feet of ladder extension above the upper contact point when climbing onto an elevated surface. When inspecting articulated ladders, ensure each hinge is working properly. Improper handling of ladders can damage their hinges and rungs, making them unsafe to climb.
30
NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE
When transporting ladders, firmly secure them to the vehicle to prohibit excessive movement/jolting. This will reduce the likelihood that hinges become loose or rungs get dented or damaged. When carrying larger ladders, always involve at least two people— one carrying the front of the ladder and one carrying the back. This will prevent the ladder from getting dropped, which also increases the risk of damage and deterioration. When it comes time to set up the ladder, ensure the ground is firm, level, and non-slippery. Since it is nearly impossible to guarantee every jobsite is completely dry, use ladders with non-slip feet. Climbing too high on all ladders can be dangerous. Never climb to the top rung of the ladder. On extension ladders, don’t climb any higher than the third rung from the top. The last tip for safer jobsites is to maintain a center of gravity—or in other words, do not overreach. Keep the center of your belt buckle in the center of the side rails of the ladder at all times. Overreaching, like climbing too high, leads to instability and a lack

of balance on the ladder. If you need something outside of your reach, climb down the ladder, reposition it, and climb back up. Taking the extra time to do this will help prevent accidents. Want more tips on ladder safety at work? Utilize ALI’s free Ladder Safety Training! This resource is perfect for employees who want more information on safe ladder practices. Upon completion of the training, participants receive a certificate of completion to demonstrate their commitment to ladder safety. Also, access free safety materials on the National Ladder Safety Month website. Choose from checklists, videos, infographics, and flyers to use in the office or on the jobsite and share on social media. ALI also has an official marketing guide to help you spread the word on safe ladder use. For more ladder safety tips, visit American Ladder Institute’s website. Safe climbing!

The Problem With Free
I
Bill Ryan, Ryan Consultants Group t’s complicated, I know. I will start by recognizing that there are plenty of companies running a free estimate business model that do so with success, as reported and defined by those companies. That being said, I would love to address this from the idea of changing that perspective based on our industry and its value.
Issue 1: Value The first issue is value. When free is involved in the conversation, where is the value? Does the client perceive value? Some do (more on this shortly), but the more educated or wiser experienced consumer may actually see it as a non-starter due to their position as “buyers in need.” I have always taken the position that if you are looking for free, I am not your company. This company policy of more than 20 years has served me well. The main perspective change I needed when I first started 20 years ago was the position that I am not seeking, nor could I ever possibly serve, 100 percent of the market. I was also very confident in my knowledge, skills, and approach. I drilled down on that concept, trying to define my ideal client. What I found was this— I was seeking the client who KNEW they had an issue, were willing to address the issue, and were willing to bring in a professional. The math here is that those potential clients were the ones willing to seek value in the experience, knowledge,
36
and professionalism we were selling. In other words, we offered a professional approach to solving the problem and we did it all using the chimney industry standard of care. But what about the aforementioned consumers that perceive the value of free? Sure they have a problem—that is why they called us—however, in considering what they are really shopping for and examining all the factors of that particular potential client, they are indeed the price shoppers. So as a professional company offering professional services, it is imperative to be familiar with the phrase “the winner of the price war is the loser.” Think about it from a business perspective for a second. If you are the winner of a bid war—why? Are you the cheapest bid for the solution? If so, are you making any profit? Do you know?
if it’s free, how good can it really be? And if a company is using this business model, how many free jobs do you need to balance out all the jobs you do not get?
Issue 3: Scope of Work
Issue 2: Quality
Hand in hand with this issue is the more serious question: “What was the original call?” When we examine the majority of calls received by chimney companies for “estimates,” the actual reality is, the customer has just described the need for an inspection. Water leaks, improperly performing appliances, reports of cracks or damage to structures, rust on caps or chase covers, and on and on are all beyond the scope of simply an estimate.
The second issue with free is quality. What service can we really perform for free? Typically, we think of an estimate, or as some very dangerously call it, an inspection, sales call, or assessment. Whatever you call it,
If we look into the NFPA 211 standard of care, it prescribes a very specific course of action when there is damage present to a chimneys system—a Level 2 inspection as per chapter 15. That’s right—when a customer
These are common problems for the chimney industry, and I hear it frequently as a consultant: “We get a lot of business, but no money.” I was there once, 21 years ago, and though I sold my share of jobs off the free model, I was working entirely too hard for free!
NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE
calls and says, “I need an estimate to repair XYZ,” they have just asked you, the professional, for an inspection. This is where the word “free” needs to be removed from our vocabulary. Sell that inspection! It’s really easy when a customer is dealing with an issue, wants answers, and seeks a professional.
Issue 4: Financials Now along the same lines, I am familiar with an alternative business model where the trip is free, and the onus to sell the inspection and further work is on the technician. This highlytrained chimney, venting, and solid fuel-burning appliances technician becomes the lifeline of the operations. Is this really a technician, or is this a sales call? Inside one of these models, instant repairs may also be offered with no mention of inspection or addressing any other situation other than the symptom as reported by the initial call. The issue here is 1) the company has just left a TON of money on the table, and 2) the company may have just left a TON of liability as well. Neither are good for the company, the client, or the industry. And what about the cost of acquisition per client? Do you know your math? What is it costing your company to make that phone ring?
professional option—a proper inspection? Those things come with price tags without the “cross your fingers” approach to the free trip and hope for a sale. None of this matters, though, if you are not in touch with your numbers. It is just as important for a one man business to know the Chart of Accounts (COA) as it is a 30 man operation. Without knowing your numbers, you are flying in the fog. As an industry, we have to realize we are small and specialized. Therefore, our knowledge, skills, and willingness to work at heights are ALL valuable. The perspective change comes in the idea that if we all choose to follow the minimum standard, we couldn’t possibly do it for free, and with that comes an advancement of the trade, its image, its perceived value by consumers, and its respectability. I would venture to guess that with that would also come better financial results for all of the companies in the same service area. Oh, and by the way, when you inspect for factual situations based on that customer’s original complaint call, you will likely find safety and performance-based issues that you can then sell. Good inspections, good reports, industry standards recommendations, and off we go!
🧱
As reported on the Professional Chimney Sweep Forum on Facebook a short while ago, some companies are charging as high as $60 per client! Even at just $15, why in the world would you not want to be compensated for your trip to that home? Why would you not want to present the most

Spark YOUR MARKETING How Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Technology Are Changing Marketing in 2024 and Beyond
I
Carter Harkins and Taylor Hill, Spark Marketer f you’re not planning to attend the 2024 National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) Convention and Trade Show this year, you may want to reconsider. It’s going to be a game changer, at least in marketing and sales.
The reason is artificial intelligence (AI). There are so many applications for this technology if you take the time to understand and learn something new—to you, since AI has actually been around for over 12 years! We’re just now joining the party and applying this technology in a business setting. It’s very similar to the industrial revolution in the fact that there were early adopters and there were those who were slow to get on board with machines. The difference today is AI innovation is moving at such a fast speed that by the time you get on board, you may already be behind. And AI is not the only technology on the way! While the following isn’t a comprehensive list of all AI technologies, each of these digital tools could very well impact the future of your business.
Augmented Reality Augmented reality (AR) is the real-time use of information in the form of text, graphics, audio, and other virtual enhancements integrated with realworld objects. It is this “real world” element that differentiates AR from virtual reality (VR).
40
NCSG SWEEPING MAGAZINE
Mixed Reality Blending physical and digital worlds even more seamlessly, mixed reality (MR) overlays digital objects onto the real world while allowing physical interaction with them. Think of furniture placement in your actual living room or manipulating virtual objects with your hands. MR headsets like Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap are prime examples.
Extended Reality This umbrella term encompasses AR, MR, and VR, highlighting the interconnectedness of these immersive technologies. Exploring the different extended reality (XR) modalities and their potential for specific applications can be fruitful.
Spatial Computing This broader field focuses on computing in the context of physical space. Technologies like LiDAR and spatial mapping enable devices to understand and interact with their surroundings, laying the groundwork for AR and other location-based experiences.
Multimodal Interfaces These interfaces go beyond traditional touchscreens, incorporating voice, gesture, eye tracking, and other modalities. This can lead to more intuitive and natural interactions with AR and other XR systems, making them more accessible and engaging.
Haptic Technologies Adding the sense of touch to AR and VR experiences can significantly enhance immersion and realism. Imagine feeling the texture of a virtual object in your hand or the wind on your face in a VR simulation.
Embodied AI This emerging field explores creating AI systems that interact with the physical world through robots or other physical avatars. Blending embodied AI with AR or VR could lead to fascinating applications in areas like education, healthcare, business, and entertainment. Now that we’ve explored the technologies being worked on today for the future, let’s pivot to what’s happening in marketing right now. The marketing landscape is on the cusp of a major transformation being driven by AI. This year, AI’s influence is expected to seep into virtually every aspect of marketing, from strategy and creative content generation to campaign execution and measurement. Here are some predictions for what marketing might look like in 2024 with the adoption of AI technology.
Hyper-Personalization The days of one-size-fits-all marketing are quickly fading. AI will enable marketers to personalize experiences to an unprecedented degree, taking into account individual preferences, purchase history, and even real-time context. Imagine a world where AI can help you pre-sell a service or product to a customer right on your website, ads adapt to your mood based on your facial expressions, or product recommendations change based on what you’re browsing online in real-time. While AI-powered marketing personalization seems to be out of reach, it’s here and it’s increasingly affordable.
Predictive Marketing AI will go beyond simply understanding customer behavior; it will predict it. It will analyze vast amounts of data and anticipate customer needs and wants before they even arise. This will allow marketers to proactively engage customers with relevant content and offers, boosting engagement and conversion rates.
Content Creation on Steroids
need today to have a human edit before publishing. That could certainly change shortly as AI becomes more and more intelligent. In the future, AI will be able to generate personalized copy and craft social media posts to write blog articles and even design visuals. What it can’t do is create real-life stories from your business without input from you.
Dynamic, Data-Driven Campaigns One of the recent questions in the online community around data-driven ad campaigns is, “Who does this benefit?” While AI can take the guesswork out of campaign optimization, it seems there are players in this space who control the algorithms that may have trained the AI to their benefit. So be cautious if someone insists that you allow AI to take over everything—at least for now. In theory, by analyzing data in real-time, AI can identify what’s working and what’s not, and make adjustments on the fly to maximize campaign performance. Wouldn’t it be great if ad budgets automatically shifted to platforms and campaigns that are performing best, or email campaigns able to adapt their content based on individual recipient engagement? This is where it’s headed very soon.
The AI-Powered Marketer AI won’t replace human marketers. But human marketers who use AI will replace those who don’t. Successful marketers in 2024 and beyond will be those who can harness the power of AI to gain deeper customer insights, create more impactful campaigns, and achieve better results with human oversight. Overall, the integration of AI with marketing promises to be a game-changer. While challenges around data privacy and ethics need to be addressed and solved, there are great potential benefits for both brands and consumers alike. 2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for marketing, and AI will be at the forefront of this evolution. Because this technology is so new and changing, no one really knows the actual future of AI, and it could unfold completely different than we think. Yet, regardless of whether you do your own marketing or work with an agency, AI is here to stay, and its impact on marketing will only continue to grow and change in the years to come.
🧱
While AI-powered tools can automate and augment the content creation process, there still is a real
