I

’m excited, every year at convention there is something new to learn and grow. Plus, seeing many old friends and making new ones. So here are my personal tips for convention: 1. Most important bring an open mind. If you hear a new idea I encourage you to think it over, don’t just write it off as only working for that guy. Also don’t run and hide in your room between sessions- meet people. 2. Bring an iPad, note pad or for you old guys a scroll to take notes. It can be difficult to implement all the new ideas you learn. What I recommend is concentrating on just a few key ones when you get home. 3. Download the app. 4. Bring an outfit for the auction (Roaring ‘20s), banquet (semi-formal), a night out, and

clothes you can get dirty. 5. Challenge coins, don't forget them.... (If you don’t have one yet be sure to stop by the NCSG retail booth at the trade show) 6. Don't eat alone! Sit by someone you don’t know and swap stories, nightmares, or fun experiences.

7. Meet the staff, the board members and the international guests. I enjoy hearing stories from across the pond or just our north boarder. I know every year I come away energized with a new idea to try out and the growth myself and other companies experience is in large part to being a National Chimney Sweep Guild member and taking advantage of our yearly conventions.

“I wanted to write in and tell you how much I appreciate the quality of your products. We inspect approximately 20 to 30 chimneys every week and we run into every product there is on the market. I can tell you with absolute certainty that your FireGuard and Guardian products have no equals. I can say this because I've tried the other products and had to deal with many call backs due to cracks and failures as well as the complications involved with the installation. FireGuard and Guardian are simple to install and we do not get call backs. I've been using your products since 2005 and it is always a pleasure to inspect a chimney we repaired years ago and see that it still looks as good as it did the day we fixed it with your products. Thank you Jay!” Dave Laverdiere - Owner of Boston Brick & Stone - Pasadena California

ollowing up is easy in theory, but sometimes hard in practice, especially if you have to follow up multiple times over several months. Who has the time — and let’s be honest, the patience — to follow up when you’re working on completing the work you have right in front of you and getting the next job through the door? It’s an age old problem that most businesses ignore until the phone stops ringing during the slow part of the year. That’s when we riffle through the estimates and pick out the ones that are most likely to say “yes” so we can keep our company busy and solvent. Most of us have been doing it this way for years, and while we haven’t grown much by following up this way, we have survived.

March 2018

It’s Time to Thrive and Not Just Survive As the owners of a digital marketing company that primarily helps service businesses, one of the things we get asked most frequently is: What do other companies do to keep everyone working year-round? The answer is simple: Companies that keep their staff working year-round are booking jobs during the “slow season.” You see, some business owners decide to opt out of the “slow season” by making sure there is no “slow season.” They do this by marketing, doing the work, giving out the estimates, AND following up on the

estimates to keep work on the calendar year-round. We’ve seen the difference good follow up practices can make in a business, and how these practices can keep a company busy year round, not just seasonally. We also know that some people feel “No follow up is needed.” How do we know this? We’ve seen people actually say on Facebook that they never follow up with any estimates, and that if a customer wants them to do the work, it’s up to them to contact the business to make the arrangements. Really? You’re willing to leave it up to the customer? The customer that is too busy, didn’t expect to need repairs, likely had sticker shock because it was an unexpected expense, and has the ability to ask for other estimates? Leaving the decision totally in that person’s hands seems to us to be a dangerous proposition at best.

8 S W E E P I N G

Sometimes your customers and potential customers need reminding or need to have the work, cost, and value explained to them in more detail. If you don’t bother calling to see if they have any questions or apprehensions, you’ll miss an opportunity to provide that value and answer the questions they have that are preventing them from moving forward. There are also instances when your customer or potential customer may have received the estimate and decided it needed to wait for financial reasons. If you don’t bother following up, you’ll never know when that better time might be, and they may just get another estimate from

March 2018

another company when they are ready to move forward with repairs. Are you really willing to leave that up to chance?

A Better Way While following up can seem like extra work, it’s worth doing if your care about the health of your business. If you don’t follow up, you’re letting work fall by the wayside and missing opportunities to keep your calendar busy year round. Think about it: You’ve already gotten the call, done the estimate, and established an initial relationship. Don’t let that go to waste — follow up! Some companies have a manual system they use, while others simply do it when they can. We think the best way to follow up is to set up an automatic system that you can

manually change, as needed. That way, it’s not really more work for you, it’s more work on your books, and more money in your pockets. Catch us at the NCSG Convention in Portland to discover more! while maintaining superior performance due to the mesh design characteristics. DuraChimney II products are built to stay cool on the outside, to provide a hot draft on the inside and to provide a fire-safe design that protects both the chimney and the building.

To provide ease of installation when working in confined spaces, DuraVent will release its lower profile PelletVent® Pro Tee Cap. A one-handed twist-off cap held in place with a spring button design, the PelletVent Pro Tee Cap height has been reduced by 1” compared to previous designs and provides a smoother operation than previous generations.

The Most Important Day In An Employee’s Career

12 S W E E P I N G March 2018

T

he question asked is, what is the most important day in an employee’s career? What day that they work for you will be the Number 1 day of setting a course for their success or failure? What day will be the day that will give them the most background of your company? What day is the day that will set the path for their career with your company? The Answer: Day 1. But the truth of the matter is that often Day 1 is a wasted day and the day that most managers completely miss the mark on setting the future course of the employee’s growth in the company. Let me ask you: What is your system for Day 1? Just how do you handle the most important day that this person will ever work for you? How do you make this day the day that will build their success or will likely start them on a path of potential failure? Again, Day 1, is a critical day. Think for a moment back to an earlier time in your life, when you started something completely new. Maybe it was your first day in school, kindergarten, or first grade. Were you nervous going in? Did your path start then? Did you start to build a relationship with others on that first day? Did you ever go to a new school at some point in your life? All your classmates already knew each other, and you were the new kid--remember how that felt? How did your school career go from that point forward? Well, this is the first day that your new hire will have and they are entering a society, an atmosphere, which is brand new for them. And likely it has been a crap shoot of whether they will succeed, or they will fail. But is there a better way?

Is there a way to make this first day of employment a day that will give them the tools of success they need to excel for you? I think there is and that is the concept I want to share with you in this article. Now I am assuming you have gone through the proper steps in your recruitment process. You have done the interviews and the pre-employment testing process for personality, mechanical aptitude, math skills, etc. You have properly explained the job role and the company culture, mission, and goals and, you have thoroughly explained the expectations you have for this person. If you have not done these steps then we will review these in a future article. But for today, his first day, it is likely you have already invested time and expense in this person, and now it is time for them to report to work. As such, what is your Day 1 onboarding process? Does this person simply clock in and you send them with someone or are you now ready to do the work required to make their career one of success? Before I go any further, I want to thank Brandi Biswell for her input into the processes she uses that she has shared with me. She is probably one of the best in this area in our industry, and her expertise is much appreciated by myself and others who have learned from her. This is Day 1, and you should have an On-Boarding process as a part of your systems if you plan to obtain the best this person has to offer. The first step is that your HR person should now sit with this person and review the following: • The company personnel manual (You do have one, right?)

• The company SOPs (These are complete, right?) • Review the expectations again (You went through these previously in the interview process, right?) • Have them sign off that they have received these and that they now understand them and will follow them. Yes, that process may take some time, perhaps half of that first day, but isn’t that time worth it if you are going to make them successful? So now, they need to have an understanding of what the company does and what products and services you offer to your customers (or do you prefer for them to just get this on their own?) OK, so now we have gone through the onboarding process, and that should make them successful, right? Nope, you are not going to gain that success you are looking for just by onboarding them, so what is next? Now starts the education process. Yes, you heard me right, it is now time for the classroom work to start. And how do you do this classroom work? And where do you do it? Today, a successful company requires an area for training, an area where your new hires and you existing team goes through their continuing training. As Al Levy once shared at an NCSG Convention, being able to say in your marketing that you train your people in your training center instead of in your customer's homes is a strong statement that sells you and your company to your prospects and reinforces your professionalism to your existing customer base. To build your new person for

success, now is the time you put them through the facilitated training that will move them rapidly to the position of a profitable member of your team. This can be done with the training you put together or with training content you can obtain from educational providers. In today's world you are lucky, as the availability of online training has now opened new and innovative ways to provide this training. It’s a way where others provide content that you can use to make the most of this important first day and the days to follow. You need to assemble your training plan, but the basis of your training should be such that upon completion they will have obtained a basic understanding of the challenges of the industry they are entering. This training should also have given them

insight into the terms and words that will be used and the definitions for these. Now here is the bad news-this will stretch beyond a oneday time frame. Just think about how long it will take for the average human being to understand all the services and products you offer. But WITHOUT this education, how long will it take them? As such, the company of the future--the successful and profitable company-- will likely start to invest several days into classroom training in the future, but the future is now the present and is it now time that we upped our game if we are to deliver on our commitment to our customer. But there is more. Will this new hire be a field employee, or will they be office based? If the plan is for them to be field

13 S W E E P I N G March 2018

14 S W E E P I N G

staff, is it now time to start them with hands-on training. Remember the goal is to train them in your in-house training center, not in your customer’s homes. As such, they need familiarity with the tools they will use, and have access to the equipment they will be required to use. Also, there must be a review of the safety equipment. As such, isn’t ladder and roof training required, after learning that the fall is the Number 1 safety hazard of the worker in construction? And, that many of these falls are less than an 8-foot fall? How can we today in good conscience send someone into the field ill-trained and illprepared to do the job properly and safely? The following are the statistics of workplace fatalities in 2016 as published by OSHA: Falls — 384 out of 991 total deaths in construction in CY 2016 (38.7%) Struck by Object - 93 (9.4%) Electrocutions - 82 (8.3%) Caught-in/between* - 72 (7.3%) (*This category includes construction workers killed when caught-in or compressed by equipment or objects, and struck, caught, or crushed in collapsing structure, equipment, or material) It is during this time that you hand out the safety equipment that will be assigned to the new hire if they are in the field. With the Number 1 injury being from a fall, and after hearing several very emotional presentations from individuals who had suffered these losses over recent weeks, does this include a climbing helmet? Now I am sure you are thinking, this is a lot of time and money, and you are correct. Everything I am speaking of is a commitment,

March 2018

a commitment of time, money, and resources, but I ask you to think for a few minutes. What does a FAILED worker cost you? From my research it appears that the process of training a failed employee can range from $15K and up. And, waste due to mistakes can make these costs even higher. Or what is the cost to you if a worker is injured, or worse, does not go home tonight? And what is the emotional toll it will place on you? From conversations with those who have suffered through this, you cannot place a cost on this, and it never leaves--it will affect you for life. It is a new world, and as a manager, you have an immense array of tools available to you to help you reach your business and personal dreams. Everybody says they cannot find anyone to

work for them, but I disagree. I feel that we are not looking in the right place, or with the right bait and once we find them, we are not doing as a good a job as we should in our recruiting and training process. If you agree, hopefully these ideas will provide you concepts to take your success to a higher level. Approved Industries - Formerly Ventech 78 Lawrence St, Hackensack, NJ 201-489-5100 and 866-439-0069 http://approvedindustries.com/ info@approvedindustries.com Ventech Industries, Inc., the manufacturers of Thermocrete Ceramic Flue Sealant (CFS) has been in progression since the late 1990s. In 1997, they began a company called Thermocrete USA, Inc. to bring a new product (CFS) from the UK to the American market. Since then they have created an international network, training chimney and venting professionals throughout North America on the use of their products. The success of Thermocrete as a solution for damaged chimneys led Thermocrete USA, Inc. to launch the development of an ever-increasing number of chimney repair products. As more products were developed it became evident that a larger company was needed to represent them all adequately and thus Ventech Industries, Inc. was formed in 2002. Both generations continue to lead the team bringing experience and science together to provide modern technology to an ancient industry. In late 2017 Ventech Industries was acquired by Approved Industries, latest change allowed Thermocrete product to mark a new era in the chimney venting industries by reaching more installers and being in the centralized location allowing faster shipping of the materials and more in hands training for existing and future installers.

The Business of Safety

By Chuck Roydhouse

A

s a business owner you have many responsibilities spread over all aspects and departments of your business. Yet many often neglect the most basic responsibility that is crucial to the success of the business and can either make or break you. That responsibility is workplace safety.

S W E E P I N G

Before the late 19th century safety was not a focus nor a concern to businesses. A combination of limited knowledge due to lack of research and scarce laws and regulations regarding workplace safety contributed in the creation of some of the most dangerous working environments in the world, specifically in America during and after the Industrial Revolution. The 20th century saw a shift starting with a growing public concern for safety in the work place led by progressive reformers and labor unions. This push would result in the founding of the Federal Food and Drug Administration and in 1908 Congress

March 2018

passing its first Workers Compensation Laws. This leads us to the 21st century, where research on health and work safety has been prioritized, resulting in a deeper understanding of the cause and effects of safety in the workplace. As we can see from this brief history lesson the importance of safety started as a small growing concern and has steadily become of great interest to employers and companies who are willing to implement procedures and benefit from the effects. This can be approached in many different methods, some more complex than others, but a simplified and effective method is to use the six components of safety management. Integrating these six components to a business have been proven to drastically reduce the risk associated with employee injuries and sickness. • Work site Inspections • Incident Tracking

• Incident Risk Assessment • Employee Training • Employee Qualification • Action Item Tracking These components help by inspecting and ensuring the work site is safe and possible hazards are identified and noted. Tracking previous incidents allows us to keep records and discover patterns of when, where, and how they are occurring. Risk assessments help to identify vulnerabilities and assess how prepared we are to detect and respond to them. Employee training and qualifications further ensure they are able to handle specific equipment and tasks thus reducing the risk even further of incidents. Lastly tracking the items, tasks, and activates that need to take place gives you the ability to describe and inform what needs to happen, when and how.

34 S W E E P I N G

Developing safety procedures may seem like a daunting and complicated task but in reality, is quite simply done in a fourstep process. First you must identify the job you want to analyze, this can be any job in any position since all jobs hold some safety or health risk. The second step is breaking the job down into a sequence of steps. Doing this allows you to next better analyze the potential hazards in each step rather than trying to list all the hazards for the job as a whole which can be very ineffective and cause you to miss certain hazards. Lastly you need to determine preventative measures to put in place to overcome the hazards you have identified.

March 2018

This can be done in many ways but the easiest and most effective way is creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). These lay out the steps needed in completing a job in a safe and efficient manner. This can also include what safety equipment is necessary and what hazards should be watched for to keep the personnel completing the jobs safe. All companies should employ these useful tools to not only assist new employees while they are going through on boarding, but it also gives trained employees a reference if they ever have a question about a procedure. Once you have developed your safety procedures comes the important step of maintaining and ensuring they are followed. This is done mainly through communication with your employees and workplace inspections. Communication is they key part of maintaining and improving workplace safety procedures. During the weekly team meetings, you should be hosting add time where you can review a current safety procedure as well as ask for recommendations or suggestions in how we can update or improve upon the current procedure. This will get people involved in the process and thus assist them in not only learning the proper procedures, but encourages them to follow them in an effort to protect their personal health and safety. Work-site inspections whether random or scheduled can show you how well these guidelines and procedures are being followed by seeing first-hand how they incorporated by the employees while performing

their jobs. Now this leads us to the question of how a focus on workplace safety can save me money. Studies have consistently shown that every dollar invested in safety programs provides a payback of $4 to $6 in reduced costs. The money you allocate to this will certainly be less than what you would be paying after a preventable injury. What’s the similarity between a workplace injury and an iceberg? Ninety percent of a typical iceberg is hidden under the surface and the same is true for workplace injuries. When looking at these accidents and injuries there are both direct and indirect costs associate with them. The direct costs are the 10% that are visible on the surface and the indirect cost are the unseen costs that lurk unseen below the surface. Direct costs consist of things such as workers’ compensation coverage increasing, the costs to replace the labor, and costs needed to investigate the accident. The indirect costs are the ones that can be concerning and like the iceberg that sunk the Titanic can cause devastating damage. These costs are not only related to physical money but can include time and reputation. These costs consist of production downtime, damage to products and equipment, decrease in productivity, loss of current and future contracts, negative press/damage to reputation, OSHA fines/ investigations, and legal costs. As you can see a lot of costs you wouldn’t initially identify after a workplace accident lurk right below the surface. Focusing on

and implementing proper safety procedures and training can help you reduce the risk of injury and help you navigate these waters and thus save money by avoiding these situations. “Suppose your company could make an investment in its business that provided a 400 to 600 percent rate of return.” This statement may sound far-fetched but it’s actually factual if you view safety as an investment rather an expense. Workplace injuries and illness cost more than $170 billion a year and contribute to about 40 million missed working days in the U.S alone. That is an astronomical amount of lost work time and thus a direct loss profits. When employees are out sick or injured that is less hours they work thus affecting how many jobs you can handle and in

the end, that’s a loss of money to not only them but to you and the company as well. Implementing safety procedures can reduce the chance of employee injuries and sickness therefor reducing the chance of days they would be absent as a result of such. To summarize, all businesses that want to not only be successful but also employ a workforce that is both positive in attitude and physically healthy will no doubt emphasize safety in the work place no matter the job. Putting these guidelines in place and communicating about the importance of everyone's safety will build another avenue of connection between your employees and management. Whether you are a running a blue collar construction/contracting, distribution warehouse, or an IT

consulting firm, safety policies and procedures need to be set in place to not only protect your employees but also to protect the company from potential lawsuits and liability charges. These procedures take time to get up and running but are well worth the investment with the benefits and rewards you get in return. Question

40

I plan to install two UL listed stainless steel chimney liners in the same chimney flue in a residential single-family home application that will serve two separate appliances. Is this permitted without installing a nominal 4" thick masonry wythe or dividing wall between them?

S W E E P I N G March 2018

Answer: Every year we take a step back from the technical questions, and talk about the NCSG convention. And every year, there are first-time attendees who want to know what the benefits are. The benefits are many, and often long lasting. A chance to travel to a new and different location, valuable education and CEUs, new products and vendors on the trade show floor. But the biggest benefit, the most talkedabout benefit, the longest lasting, is the people.

Convention draws folks from all parts of the country, even different parts of the world, and we all come together, for this annual event. It could be the people we meet on the trade show floor, putting faces to the vendors, suppliers and manufacturers that support our industry. Maybe we talked to a rep or technical person on the phone, but never met them. Now we can shake their hand and put a face to the name. It gives us an opportunity to meet with lots of people, even behind the scenes folks for products we use and products we see in the field. Sometimes we even get to ask a technical question in person, and get a far better explanation than over the phone. Whatever the interaction, convention gives us that opportunity.

Then there are our fellow sweeps. In the lobbies, in the restaurants and bars, in the hallways, on the trade show floor. During the NCSG Convention, it would seem that we are everywhere, with strength in numbers. For many of us, it's a once-a-year opportunity to catch up with old friends, and make new ones. Many of the friendships forged at the NCSG Convention last a lifetime! Whether we talk about family and friends, chimneys, politics, or the industry in general, every conversation that takes place between us helps strengthen our organization, our bonds, and our future. Sometimes it's in these conversations, outside of the classroom, swapping stories, that we pick up a gem or nugget of wisdom, that can change the way we do things. We could be talking to one of the industry pioneers, or a new sweep that has a fresh set of eyes and new perspective. Maybe we are talking with someone that we know well, or someone that's new. And many of us come with our spouses or families, and they get to meet the spouses and families of others, just like us. Every conversation is special, and the impacts of this networking can last for years!

Convention is also a great opportunity for all of us to meet and even get to know the CSIA & NCSG Staff. We can find them in the registration booth, in the hallways during classes, in their office, on the trade show floor, and socializing throughout the event. These folks work very hard for us, and very hard for and at convention. It gives us a chance to meet them, and also thank them for everything they do throughout the year! Convention is also a great opportunity to meet the members of the CSIA & NCSG Boards. CSIA and NCSG directors are often wearing suits throughout the event. They're all volunteers, and they are all approachable. Convention is a great opportunity to meet them, thank them for their service, and get to know them better than before. They volunteer for us, and want to help however they can. An article in a magazine simply can't portray the amazing experience of the people at the NCSG convention. These are just a few examples of the benefits, and the amazing opportunities be NCSG convention presents us. Hope to see you there!

t’s buzzing with energy and excitement here in the NCSG office as we plan for another successful convention. We have a pretty incredible few days planned for you, so make sure you are registered! While you’re counting down the days to Portland, let’s discuss buying, benevolence, and benefits.

Buying While you are walking around Convention and Portland, what better way is there to display your NCSG pride than by sporting some NCSG apparel? We will have some exclusive gear for you to check out and purchase right at Convention. You can pick up hats, shirts, sweatshirts, socks, and even neckties to wear around. There are some fun trinkets, too, like pins, decals, pint glasses, and jewelry. Take a peek at all of this NCSG Swag and more at the retail booths.

Benevolence We are still in need of volunteers! If you’re looking for a way to get move involved and meet tons of other people,

then consider giving some of your time to help make this Convention the best it can be. We are looking for individuals to help with registration, scanning into sessions, and the CISA Annual Auction. Head on over to http://bit.ly/NCSGvolunteers to sign up. Convention would not be a success without your generosity.

Veracity Insurance Solutions, CVC Coaching, and Spark Marketer will all be there. But keep your eyes peeled for a new Member Benefit that is launching at Convention: The Sweeps App. This application is an all-inone scheduling/ bookkeeping/ documenting/ everything tool designed specifically for chimney professionals.

exclusive discounts and deals that can make your business stand out and succeed. This will be my first NCSG Convention and I’m thrilled to finally meet all of you wonderful sweeps and friends! Stop on by the membership booth and say hello.

Make sure you take some time to meet with all of these exhibitors, as it will be a great time to check out some more information on companies that provide

CSIA UPDATE March 2018 Report

Drones in Droves

Chimney and venting technicians are using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, more frequently during their chimney inspections. It makes sense, it’s a lot safer than climbing on a roof. While physically safer than using ladders or using the rope safety systems taught in our Roof System Specific Rope Access Training course (May 21-22, Montgomery, TX), there are some risks to be concerned with beyond the obvious physical concerns of a flying device with attached blades.

www.CSIA.org

Pilot: Do you need a UAS license?

To help you prepare fo the Part 107 exam, the FAA has free materials available at:

Under the FAA Special Rule for Model Aircraft for hobby and recreation flying, you are only required to register your aircraft.

www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/part_107/

For commercial use, pilots fly under the FAA’s Small UAS Rule (Part 107). Part 107 rule governing commercial UAS use guidelines are as follows: • • • • • • • •

Fly for recreational OR commercial use Register your drone Get a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA Fly a drone under 55 lbs. Fly within visual-line-of-sight* Don’t fly near other aircraft or over people* Don’t fly in controlled airspace near airports without FAA permission* Fly only during daylight or civil twilight, at or below 400 feet*

* These rules are subject to a waiver. “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help” - Ronald Reagan

Jokes aside, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has rules regarding the use of drones for professional use. Equipment: drones weighing more than 0.55 lbs and less than 55 lbs, must be registered at faadronzezone.faa.gov.

The requirements for becoming a Remote Pilot are: • • •

Be at least 16 years old Pass an aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center Undergo Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) security screening

In addition to the FAA prep, there are many in-person and online training options. For instance, CSIA-certified sweep, Jim Ferguson of Ferguson’s Fireside Chimney Cleaning in Canton, OH, teaches a course on Part 107 for UAS drone use in chimney inspections. As you’ll learn in your studies, take note of where you are flying and FAA filing requirement. Due to CSIA’s proximity to Indianapolis International Airport, we are required to file a flight plan with the airport tower.
