WINKELEN Shoppen doe je in kleine boetiekjes, weggestopt in lastig te vinden zijstraatjes en buitenwijken. De Jægersborggade (1) in de hippe wijk Nørrebro is hier een goed voorbeeld van. Dit is een typisch Deens straatje, gevuld met typisch Deense winkeltjes vol vintagekleding en zelfgemaakte, lokale producten. Winkel je liever in de grote, bekende ketens? Neem dan een kijkje aan Strøget (2), één van de langste autovrije winkelstraten van Europa.

CULTUUR Als je Denemarken zegt, zeg je hygge. Dit begrip komt je misschien wel bekend voor. Er zijn de afgelopen jaren namelijk behoorlijk wat boeken over het woord en vooral over de betekenis achter het woord geschreven. In het kort betekent hygge alles wat gezelligheid is. Je kunt je voorstellen dat Denen gek zijn op het najaar en de feestmaand december. Dit is dan ook de meest gezellige en hygge tijd om het land te bezoeken. Hygge maakt namelijk een groot deel uit van de Deense cultuur en dat merk je! Cultuur snuiven kan ook door het bezoeken van de vele musea die de stad rijk is. Aanraders zijn het Statens Museum for Kunst (3) en het Designmuseum Danmark (4). Ook het operagebouw (5), gevestigd op het eiland Holmen is de moeite waard. ACTIVITEITEN Wanneer de drukte van het centrum je even teveel wordt, is het zeer aan te raden een mooie wandeling door Christianshavn (6) te maken. Deze wijk werd in 1619 aangelegd in opdracht van koning Christian IV. De koopmanspakhuizen die aan weerszijden van de grachten zijn gebouwd doen denken aan Nederland, de architect liet zich namelijk inspireren door Amsterdamse pakhuizen.

ETEN EN DRINKEN Denen houden van eten en gezelligheid. In Kopenhagen vind je daarom op elke hoek van de straat wel een gezellig koffietentje of ontbijtbarretje, allemaal in hygge sferen. Wil je een typisch Deense zoetigheid proeven? Ga dan naar Meyers Bageri (7) en bestel een ‘Kanelsnurre’ (kaneelbrood) of breng een bezoek aan Conditori & Cafe H. C. Andersen (8) en vraag om een ‘Kransekake’ (traditioneel Deens gebak). Ook het typisch Deense smørrebrød kun je eigenlijk niet aan je voorbij laten gaan.

OVERNACHTEN Kopenhagen schreeuwt design. Het is dan ook niet gek dat het in deze stad barst van de prachtige designhotels. Goedkoop is het niet, maar voor de ultieme ervaring is het zeker aan te raden. Een andere, iets betaalbaardere tip, is het overnachten in een Airbnb of appartement. VERVOER De metro brengt je in Kopenhagen zonder problemen van bestemming naar bestemming. Veel leuker is het echter om fietsen te huren. De stad beschikt namelijk over enorm brede fietspaden en is tevens uitgeroepen tot één van de veiligste fietssteden van Europa. Een fiets huren is helemaal niet duur en kan bijna overal.

SHOPPING The best shopping can be found in the tiny boutiques hidden away on the side streets and the outskirts of town. Take the Jægersborggade (1) in the hip Nørrebro neighbourhood, for example. It’s a typical Danish street filled with typically Danish stores selling vintage clothing and local handmade products. But if it’s established brands you’re looking for, then check out the Strøget (2): it’s one of the longest car-free shopping streets in Europe.

CULTURE When you talk about Denmark, you’re talking about hygge. You may already be familiar with this concept: there have been quite a few books written about the word and the meaning behind it in recent years. In a nutshell, hygge is all things cosy. It’s easy to see why the Danes love the winter months and the holiday season. It’s the cosiest time of the year to travel to this northern nation. Visiting Copenhagen late in the year makes it clear just how much the Danes love all things hygge! You can also indulge in Danish culture by visiting one of the many museums in the city. The Statens Museum for Kunst (3) and the Designmuseum Danmark (4) are highly recommended. The opera house (5) on Holmen island is also worth the trip. ACTIVITIES If the city centre is a little too busy for you, taking a stroll through the lovely Christianshavn (6) is a great alternative. This neighbourhood, which was commissioned by King Christian IV, features merchant homes and warehouses lining both sides of the canals. Their appearnace is reminiscent of the Netherlands, which is no coincidence: the architect who built them was inspired by the warehouses of Amsterdam. FOOD AND DRINKS Danish people love dining and cosiness. In Copenhagen, there’s a charming coffee shop or breakfast place around every corner, each with an equally hygge atmosphere. Looking to try typically Danish sweets? Visit Meyers Bageri (7) and order a Kanelsnurre (cinnamon bread) or stop by Conditori & Cafe H. C. Andersen (8) and ask for a Kransekake (a traditional Danish pastry). Don’t forget to try a typically Danish smørrebrød, too! OVERNIGHT STAY Everything about Copenhagen screams ‘designer’, so it should come as no surprise that this city is bursting at the seams with beautiful designer hotels. It’s certainly not cheap, but we highly recommend it for the ultimate city experience. Another – more affordable – option is staying in an Airbnb or an apartment. TRANSPORT You can easily get from Point A to Point B in Copenhagen with the metro, but seeing the city by bike is much more fun. The city has super wide bike paths and has been deemed one of the safest biking cities in Europe. You can pick up a rental bike for a low price basically anywhere in Copenhagen.

De Stormruiter: hoogtepunt van Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 ‘De Stormruiter’: highlight of Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 Ellen ten Damme, Jelle de Jong, Annemaaike Bakker en honderd Friese paarden schitteren volgend jaar september en oktober in De Stormruiter. De muzikale theatervoorstelling is één van de grootste programmaonderdelen van LeeuwardenFryslân 2018, Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. Ellen ten Damme, Jelle de Jong, Annemaaike Bakker and one hundred Friesian horses will share the spotlight next September and October in ‘De Stormruiter’. The musical theatre performance is one of the biggest events on the programme during Leeuwarden-Fryslân Capital of Culture 2018.

Het verhaal van De Stormruiter is gebaseerd op het boek De Schimmelreiter, van de Duitse schrijver Theodor Storm (1817-1888). Muzikaal leider Philip Curtis kwam met het idee om dit verhaal in een andere tijd (1750) en plek (het Bildt in Friesland) te laten afspelen. Regisseur Jos Thie heeft het uiteindelijke script voor De Stormruiter geschreven in opdracht van Stichting Faderpaard, die als doel heeft het Friese paard zo veel mogelijk onder de aandacht te brengen. Vandaar dat honderd Friese paarden een belangrijke rol spelen. De Stormruiter wordt een spektakelstuk. In het WTC Expo in Leeuwarden worden duizenden kubieke meters zand gestort en een levensechte zeedijk gebouwd. Een groot projectiescherm geeft het Friese Waddengebied weer in al zijn facetten. Het publiek aanschouwt de voorstelling vanaf een tribune, die er eveneens uitziet als een dijk. De

The story of ‘De Stormruiter’ is based on the book “De Schimmelreiter” (“The Rider on the White Horse”) by German author Theodor Storm (1817-1888). Musical director Philip Curtis came up with the idea to set the story in another time (1750) and place (het Bildt in Friesland). Director Jos Thie was commissioned to write what would become the script for ‘De Stormruiter’ by the Faderpaard Foundation, a group focused on raising the profile of the Friesian horse breed, and their involvement is the reason why one hundred Friesian horses will play a prominent role in the performance. ‘De Stormruiter’ is set to be a spectacular experience. Thousands of cubic meters of sand will be brought in to build a life-size dike inside the WTC Expo in Leeuwarden and a massive projection screen will recreate the Frisian Wadden region in all its glory. Hij krijgt van een zigeunervrouw (Ellen ten Damme) een schimmelhengst die magische krachten zou hebben. Op dit paard gezeten jaagt Hauke de dijkwerkers aan. Zijn vrouw Elke (Annemaaike Bakker) gebruikt de hengst om een nieuw paardenras te fokken. Dit nieuwe ras blijkt al snel gewild in heel Europa.

SIERLIJKE DRESSUUR Naast de genoemde acteurs spelen ook Joop Wittermans, Freark Smink, Klaasje Postma, Lourens van den Akker en Hilbert Dijkstra een rol in De Stormruiter. Een sterke cast, die nog eens aan kracht wint dankzij de bijdrage van Théâtre du Centaure uit Marseille. Het duo Manolo en Camille voelt zich één met hun paard, en zo ziet het er ook uit wanneer ze de ingewikkelde maar sierlijke dressuur voor hun rekening nemen. De Wëreldbänd componeert en speelt niet alleen de muziek, maar de muzikanten maken ook deel uit van de voorstelling. Het verhaal gaat over Hauke Haien (Jelle de Jong) die al van kinds af aan één droom heeft: een dijk bouwen die de

The formidable cast is made even stronger by a contribution from Théâtre du Centaure from Marseille. The duo of Manolo and Camille seem to be at one with their horse when performing their complex and elegant dressage. Not only is the Wëreldbänd composing and playing the music for the show, but the musicians are also part of the performance itself.

Hauke en Elke zijn ervan overtuigd dat de dijk en de paardenfokkerij veel voorspoed en welvaart zullen brengen voor de inwoners. Maar door geroddel en wantrouwen onder diezelfde inwoners wordt het lastiger om hun werk te volbrengen. Uiteindelijk keert ook de natuur zich tegen het stel, met een zeer dramatische gebeurtenis tot gevolg. GROOTSTE CULTUURPRODUCTIE De Stormruiter wordt één van de grootste cultuurproducties van Nederland in 2018. Geen wonder dus dat de eerste 15.000 kaarten al binnen twee weken waren verkocht. In totaal vinden er vijftien voorstellingen plaats in september en oktober 2018. Om de Stormruiter-beleving compleet te maken, is het mogelijk om voorafgaand aan de voorstelling een Bildt buffet of een Bildts driegangenmenu te nuttigen. Elk gerecht is bereid met producten uit het Waddengebied, aangevuld met streekproducten uit de rest van Fryslân.

The musical tells the story of Hauke Haien (Jelle de Jong), whose lifelong dream was to build a dike that would stand the test of time. He finally gets the chance to make his dream a reality when he becomes a dike builder. A gypsy woman (Ellen ten Dame) gives him a white horse with magical powers, which Hauke rides as he oversees the workers constructing the dike. His wife Elke (Annemaaike Bakker) uses the stallion as a stud to create a new breed of horses which quickly becomes highly sought after throughout Europe. Hauke and Elke are convinced that the dike and the horse breeding will bring great prosperity and wealth to their town. But rumours and distrust spreading among the townspeople make it difficult to accomplish their work. Nature eventually turns against the couple as well, with disastrous consequences. LARGEST CULTURAL PRODUCTION “De Stormruiter” will be one of the largest cultural productions in the Netherlands in 2018, so it should come as no surprise that 15,000 tickets were already sold in the first two weeks after going on sale. There will be 15 performances throughout September and October of 2018. A three course meal featuring Bildts cuisine and a Bildts buffet prior to the performance are also available to complete the cultural experience. Each dish will be prepared with ingredients from the Wadden region and other local products from across the province of Fryslân.

Klein maar fijn Big things come in small packages Groningen Airport Eelde heeft weer vrienden. Ondernemers spannen zich ineens in voor de noordelijke luchthaven en er is zelfs al een businessclub. Over nieuwe tijden. Groningen Airport Eelde is making new friends. Businesses are eager to work with the northern airport, which has recently opened its own business club. Here’s to new beginnings!

Groningen Airport Eelde is geen concurrent van Lelystad, Bremen of Münster en moet dat ook niet worden. Burgemeester Peter den Oudsten van aandeelhouder stad Groningen stelt onomwonden: „We zijn een kleine luchthaven en we blijven een kleine luchthaven.”

Groningen Airport Eelde is no rival to Lelystad, Bremen or Münster, nor should it be. Groningen mayor Peter den Oudsten, one of the shareholders representing the city of Groningen, is frank about it: “We’re a small airport, and we will always be a small airport.”

Vanuit die maatvoering liggen er nog voldoende mogelijkheden, constateert hij tijdens een oriëntatietrip met de vliegende ondernemersen lobbyclub GRQ naar Kopenhagen. Realiteitszin in combinatie met ambitie en creativiteit moet de noordelijke luchthaven voldoende spankracht geven om de regio tot nut te zijn en ook economisch een plus te halen. Het is daarom een lobby op maat.

During an orientation trip to Copenhagen with the Eeldebased business and lobbying club GRQ Business Network, the mayor asserted that the airport’s unique position offers ample opportunities. A healthy sense of realism, ambition and creativity come together to benefit the region and make economic gains through a tailor-made lobbying effort.

Marco van de Kreeke krijgt sindsdien steun uit alle hoeken. Vanuit GRQ zijn de leden collega-ondernemers aan het bestoken met wervende teksten over de luchthaven. Het is goed de rol van de noordelijke luchthaven even te duiden: men biedt aan luchtvaartmaatschappijen en reisorganisaties een plek aan om te landen. Niks meer en niks minder. Een vliegveld faciliteert dus. Den Oudsten wil Groningen Airport ‘maximaal benutten’. De mogelijkheden zijn groter dan ooit tevoren, vindt hij, want doordat de overheden bereid lijken in totaal 46 miljoen euro te investeren en door de inzet van ondernemers is er een nieuw en fris elan. Den Oudsten: „De ondernemers zijn de drijvende kracht. Zo’n groep was er tien jaar geleden niet.” Peter den Oudsten: „Er hangt een heel andere sfeer rond Eelde, er is nieuwe energie. En als er zo meteen geïnvesteerd wordt, kunnen we serieus werken aan verdienmodellen. „ Marco van der Kreeke weet niet wat hem overkomt. „Ik word hier wel heel gelukkig van. Er is weer perspectief.”

„Laten we wel zijn”, zegt luchthavendirecteur Marco van de Kreeke tijdens diezelfde trip, „we hebben het hier over Eelde. We worden geen Eindhoven. En in alle bescheidenheid moeten we wel vaststellen dat Eelde zeker een mooie rol kan vervullen.”

“Let’s be honest”, airport director Marco van de Kreeke said during the Copenhagen trip. “We’re talking about Eelde. We’re never going to be Eindhoven. Nevertheless, we are very confident that Eelde can fulfil an important role.”

Noord-Nederland en Groningen Airport Eelde was lange tijd als een liefde tussen twee diepvrieskippen. Er was geen innige omhelzing. Tot bijna een jaar geleden de luchthaven dreigde te bezwijken onder alle tegendruk. Het leek alsof ondernemers ineens beseften wat ze zouden missen: grote schrik.

For years, there was no love lost between the Northern Netherlands and Groningen Airport Eelde. But a decade ago, the airport was on the verge of going under. Businesses were horrified and suddenly realised what it would mean if the airport ceased to exist. Since then, Marco van de Kreeke has been able to count on support from all sides.

Maar hij tempert al te verkeerde verwachtingen. Want Eelde vergelijken met Eindhoven, Rotterdam en Lelystad is onterecht. Ooit, toen Van de Kreeke zijn loopbaan in de luchtvaart begon op het vliegveld van Maastricht, gingen er zo’n 200.000 passagiers jaarlijks via Eindhoven en Rotterdam, zo herinnert hij zich. En Eelde had er ongeveer 100.000. Van de Kreeke somt op hoe de verhoudingen nu liggen: Eindhoven 4,5 miljoen passagiers, Rotterdam 1,5 miljoen en Eelde 185.000. Van de Kreeke: „Maar er is veel meer potentie dan die 185.000. Dat wel.”

The team of business people flew out of GRQ and arrived in Copenhagen armed with promotional materials about the airport. It is important to clearly state what the role of this northern Dutch airport is: providing a place for airlines and travel organisations to land. Nothing more, nothing less. An airfield is a facilitator.

Den Oudsten wants to ‘maximise the potential’ of Groningen Airport. He believes that there are more opportunities now than ever before: thanks to government willingness to invest 46 million euros and a strong degree of commitment from the business community, new life has been breathed into the airport. Den Oudsten says, “The businesses are really the driving force behind all of this. Ten years ago, we didn’t have a group like this.” Peter den Oudsten says, “The energy and the atmosphere surrounding Eelde has really changed. If investments are made quickly, we can begin working more seriously on an earnings model.” Marco van der Kreeke can hardly believe it all. “It makes me really happy to see it. There’s a whole new perspective.” But he does caution against having unrealistically high expectations. It would be unfair to compare Eelde to Eindhoven, Rotterdam or Lelystad. Van de Kreeke recalls that back when he began his career at the airport in Maastricht, there were 200,000 passengers travelling annually via Eindhoven and Rotterdam. At that time, Eelde had 100,000. Van de Kreeke points out how dramatically those numbers have changed since then: Eindhoven has 4.5 million passengers. Rotterdam has 1.5 million. Eelde has 185,000. “But there is a lot of potential in those 185,000 passengers”, Van de Kreeke says.

‘Ik heb me altijd thuis gevoeld in Drenthe’ ‘I’ve always felt at home in Drenthe’ Johan Derksen woonde naar eigen zeggen 45 jaar lang met frisse tegenzin in het westen van Nederland. Onlangs keerde hij terug naar Drenthe. „Laten we niemand vertellen hoe mooi het hier is.” Johan Derksen says that even though he lived in the cosmopolitan west of the Netherlands for 45 years, he always maintained a healthy aversion to the place. He recently moved back to his home province of Drenthe. “Don’t tell anyone how nice it is here.”

Johan Derksen verhuisde in zijn jeugd met zijn ouders naar Drenthe en woonde er jarenlang in Rolde. Hij voetbalde bij verschillende clubs in het noorden van het land, maar vertrok na zijn voetballoopbaan naar het Westen om aan de slag te gaan als redacteur van Voetbal International. In 2015 nam hij afscheid van het blad. Vorig jaar keerde Derksen, die als analist bij het programma Voetbal Inside nog veelvuldig op tv is, terug naar het Drentse Grolloo. „Ik had er al een weekendhuisje”, vertelt Derksen. „Toen ik met pensioen ging, kwam het idee om ons definitief in Drenthe te vestigen. Eigenlijk wilde vooral mijn vrouw graag terug.” Derksen is blij terug te zijn in de provincie waar hij opgroeide. „Ik heb 45 jaar met frisse tegenzin in het Westen gewoond. Als het had gekund, had ik vanuit Drenthe ge-

He played football at various clubs in the northern provinces of the country, but he returned to the west after his athletic career ended and became a correspondent for Football International magazine. In 2015, he left the publication. Last year, Derksen, who still regularly appears as an analyst on the television show “Football Inside”, moved back to the town of Grolloo in the province of Drenthe. “I already had a weekend home here”, Derksen says. “When I retired, I started thinking about returning to Drenthe permanently. My wife really wanted to move back here, too.” Derksen is glad to be back in the province where he grew up. “I maintained a healthy aversion to the west the whole 45 years that I lived there.

Bovendien heb je in het zuiden van de VS allemaal krokodillen en ligt er in het noorden de hele winter vier meter sneeuw. Nee, dan is Drenthe een stuk fijner.” Derksen is voor het programma Voetbal Inside nog geregeld in Hilversum en merkt dat ze daar een behoorlijk vooroordeel over Drenthe hebben. „Als ik na de uitzending vertrek, zeggen ze altijd: doe ze de groeten daar in de rimboe. Ze wonen zelf drie-

“There are plenty of beautiful places in this country, but I’ve always felt at home in Drenthe”, Derksen says. There was never a moment of doubt about where the football analyst, popularly known as The Moustache, would wind up when he became a pensioner. “We very briefly considered moving to America, but there are quite a few rules about being able to relocate there. Besides, they have crocodiles in the south and really harsh winters in the north, so Drenthe is better than all of that.”

Derksen still regularly travels to Hilversum for “Football Inside” and can’t help but notice that people there have certain preconceived notions about Drenthe. “When I leave after taping an episode, they

always say: give my regards to the boondocks. They all live on the third floor of some house on one of the canals in Amsterdam where you can’t even park your car on the street. But if you don’t live in Amsterdam, it’s like you don’t matter.” He hates the sense of superiority that people in the west seem to have about the province. “They see it as this area that’s just been left behind. For example: I always wear brightly colored shoes, and all the hip people I know will say things like, “wow, nice shoes! Where did you get them, from the 17th century?” If I tell them I got them in Assen, they immediately lose interest.” But Derksen is not so secretly happy that the westerners don’t realize how beautiful the province really is. “I would hate for there to be busloads of people coming to Drenthe. Dear god, no. Don’t tell anyone how nice it is here.”

THE AMERICAN DREAM IN THE DRENTS MUSEUM From 19 November 2017 through 27 May 2018, the Drents Museum and Kunsthalle Emden (a German museum) will join forces for the international art exhibit The American Dream – American Realism 1945 - 2017. This is the European premier of the double exhibition, which will be on display in Assen and Emden: it is the first time that such an extensive overview of post-war American figurative artwork can be seen in Europe. Ja, ja, alle ogen van iedereen die ook maar iets voorstelt in de muziekindustrie, zijn dan gericht op Grunn, zoals de locals hun stad noemen. De hotshots uit de business kijken vier dagen lang naar honderden acts op meer dan dertig podia, opzoek naar de volgende grote ster. Maar het festival is zeker niet alleen voor managers en platenbazen. Integendeel: Jan en Tina kijken met de kinderen naar een opkomende indie-band, in die obscure bar waar ze normaal gesproken niet durven te komen. En jongeren vullen stiekem hun rugzak met halve liters bier en checken die vette hiphop-artiest op de Grote Markt of in de kerk. Hoe divers wil je het hebben? AWARDS Die diversiteit geldt trouwens ook voor de acts. Elektronisch, metal, folk, pop, rock en hiphop uit meer dan veertig verschillende landen. Als het talent heeft, staat het op ESNS. En alle artiesten rocken

Hotshots and tastemakers will check out hundreds of acts performing on more than 30 stages, on the lookout for the next big star. But the festival is not just for managers and moguls. Quite the opposite: couples can bring their kids along to see an up-and-coming indie band in an obscure bar they would never otherwise visit, and the young folks can check out hip hop artists on the Grote Markt or even in a church while sipping half litre beers that they snuck in in their rucksacks. A wider audience would be hard to come by. AWARDS There is a lot of variety among the acts themselves, too. Electronica, metal, folk, pop, rock and hip hop performers from more than 40 different countries take the stage. If the act has talent, you will find them at ESNS. All of

Dat past Groningen overigens als een maatpak, want het is een oude stad, maar jong van geest. Dat komt door de vele studenten die er wonen, afkomstig uit binnen- en buitenland. Bovendien is de Groninger uitgaansnacht legendarisch: tal van gezellige kroegen en – wait for it – geen sluitingstijden in de horeca. Sowieso een topstad dus, maar tijdens Eurosonic Noorderslag is het zonder twijfel dé hotspot van Europa.

It’s a great city at any time of the year, but during Eurosonic Noorderslag, it’s unquestionably the hottest spot in Europe.

Dit naar schatting vierduizend jaar oude paleis in de gelijknamige historische stad was bijna nooit gevonden, als een Engelse geoloog eind negentiende eeuw niet had voorkomen dat de Grieken er huizen bouwden. Nu is het een van de rijkste opgravingen en de toonzaal van de Minoïsche beschaving uit die tijd. Met een beetje verbeelding wandel je door de straten van voor onze jaartelling en zie je hoe mensen toen leefden. ROMEINSE OVERBLIJFSELEN Op de hoogvlakte van Messara ligt Gortys. Deze antieke stad kreeg grote betekenis in de tijd dat de Romeinen de dienst uitmaakten op Kreta. Pas in de negende eeuw verlieten de laatste inwoners de stad en verwoestten de Arabieren Gortys. Waar de stad ooit stond, vind je nu nog tal van Romeinse overblijfselen, zoals

ROMAN RELICS On the Messara Plain lies Gortyn. This ancient city rose to significance under Roman rule of Crete. The last inhabitants of the city only left in the 9th century and the Arabians destroyed Gortyn.

Wie weet kijken de bewoners in het jaar 3017 wel vol bewondering naar de sporen die wij in de eenentwintigste eeuw hebben achtergelaten.

The cities of Chania and Rethymnon have Venetian harbours as well, and Rethymnon also features many Venetian mansions. Various civilisations have influenced Crete over millennia. Modern society is also adding to the history of the Greek island. Who knows: perhaps the inhabitants of the island in the year 3017 will look back in wonder at the traces that we left in the 21st century.
