Meet the Principal
John DeMasi is the principal of Mason Classical Academy, a high-performing charter school in Naples that delivers a classical education to more than 1,200 students in grades K-12. Mr. DeMasi is a student of history, graduated from Ave Maria University, and has his master’s degree in education. As a young man, it was important to him that he received a classical education, and therefore worked to pay his own way through high school. The determined effort that he put forth during his formative years helped prepare him to lead students into a deep understanding of hard work, perseverance, and personal responsibility, in addition to an appreciation of a good education. Mr. DeMasi’s upbringing, family dynamic, and education paved the way for him to assume the role as principal at MCA. He is successfully guiding the school into maintaining its mission of delivering a high-quality, classical education to all students, tuition-free, regardless of income or ZIP code. Mr. DeMasi has worked for MCA since its founding in 2014. During that inaugural year, he led the third grade teachers and students to an astonishing pass rate on the English FSA, helping to propel the school toward its current status in the top 1% of all public schools in the state of Florida. Apart from a stellar record of teaching and leadership, Teacher of the 2

Year status, and Teacher Paladin award, he met his wife in a classroom just down the hall. Annaleah Miravalle, current K-12 Academic Dean, became Mrs. DeMasi after working next to him at MCA for five years. They have a son, and they enjoy being a part of the Naples community. During any given school day, Mr. DeMasi can be found in classrooms, at recess, and at car line. He believes that to be an effective administrator, it is imperative to be present throughout the school. A fan of classical literature, Mr. DeMasi is an avid reader of authors J.R.R. Tolkien, Fyodor
Dostoevsky, and Wendell Berry. He firmly believes in looking on the bright side of life, and consistently relays that message to MCA students and faculty. When asked how he maintains such a positive attitude, he says it is because he has a God who loves him, a wife who loves him, and lives in the greatest country in the world. Mr. DeMasi encourages any family desiring a rigorous, classical education for their child to apply now during open enrollment for the 2022-23 school year. Steven Caruso has spent 29 years in independent schools. When visiting Seacrest in 2013, he was impressed with the engagement of students both inside and outside of the classroom. “All of the students, even middle school students, were happy to be at school,” Mr. Caruso said. “This is true for my own children. There has never been a day in the past nine years when they weren’t excited to go to Seacrest.” Mr. Caruso began as Head of Middle school in 2013 and became Acting Head of School in 2021. “I believe in independent schools,” Mr. Caruso said. “We provide different opportunities. We meet students where they are in their academic journey and allow them to not only find their strengths and passions, but also to recognize and embrace their own struggles and challenges.”

Taking the Stress Out of College Admissions
T
he college admissions process can be a stressful time in a family’s life. Students and parents are bombarded by information about when they should do what, what programs students should attend, and where to apply. The process can be information overload for everyone, causing heightened anxiety and a sense of inadequacy. To top it off, watching the social media of parents and students who seem to have it all together can be downright frustrating. Many websites and companies continually try convince you that unless you pay thousands of dollars for their services, your student will not get into their “dream school” and their life will be ruined. I put “dream school” in quotes because many students cannot answer the question of why it’s their dream school. Often, when push comes to shove and a student is honest, it is a college they may not even want to attend. It’s more about the idea of saying they got in. The process does not have to be stressful. On the contrary, when done right and in a certain sequence, it can be engaging, fun, and an opportunity to make quality, informed decisions. The issue is many families simply don’t know what to do and when and, more importantly, what questions to ask. It’s why only 45% of students actually graduate from college within four years! Three counselor educators, authors, and researchers (including this author) knew there had to be a better way for families to walk through the process with confidence and, dare I say, a little swagger. Utilizing our combined 80 years experience of working with students and parents and school and college counselors, as well as the latest research, we developed a highly effective strategy to help guide students through the high school to college process. The LEADS strategy was born to build a foundation of knowledge and then to continue to home in on a student’s values, desirability, selectivity, and a host of other factors to ensure student success. In the new book College UnMazed: Your Guide Through the High School to College Process, we not only focus on building college and career readiness factors, but we also guide families through the LEADS strategy to research, apply, and decide on colleges.

LEADS LIST. The first step in LEADS is building a college list. By using the best resources, such as www.collegenavigator.gov, you are shown how to begin defining a list of potential colleges. At this beginning stage, as early as 10th or 11th grade, students should focus on three of the 6 Keys of College Fit, which are academic match, career match, financial match, personal match, student outcomes, and student support. This includes things such as size, location, majors offered, and special programs. We encourage students not to think of this list as final, and to continue to research different colleges of all shapes and sizes. EXPLORE. Once a list is constructed, students should start to explore each college by gathering and analyzing key information. This is done by working on a detailed document called the College Data Organizer (found as a free download at www.collegeunmazed. com), which helps students dive deeper into the 6 Keys of College Fit for each college. Students should then take the time to explore each college’s Common Data Set (a list of academic and nonacademic factors used in college admissions) and visit each college. Once students have this information, they will start to be able to articulate why each college on their list is important to them. APPLY. While most students want to jump right into writing their applications, they need to complete one more step. This process usually begins the summer before a student’s senior year into early October. They need to understand their overall fit using the 6 Keys along with their chances of admissions at each of their potential colleges. Often things like selectivity (how many students a college accepts) override a student’s actual fit to the college. Merging these two ideas together provides the answer for each student to “Is this college right for me? And what are my chances of getting in?” At this stage, students have gathered information, explored their options, and developed a list of colleges that meet both their needs and chances of admissions. They need to start applying to colleges using a step-by-step approach to understand what documents are needed, the types of applications to use, and which application pool and deadlines are best to increase the NEAPOLITANfamily • 2022 Education Guide

chances of admissions. DECIDE. After taking the first three steps of LEADS the student should feel confident about where they are applying. As acceptance letters come in, it is time to make real, informed decisions about what to accept. Students should understand what type of admissions is being offered, complete a Financial Aid Award Letter Comparison Chart (found at www.collegeunmazed.com), and reassess their 6 Keys on the colleges they were accepted to. As well, this is the time that students should bring in their own personal thoughts and desire to attend each college and re-rank each college based on any new knowledge during the months between submitting their application and receiving a decision. Additionally, students should tap into their college support network to receive feedback before making their final decision. SUCCEED. This is where many websites and programs stop talking about college process – how does a student actually succeed at a college? In College UnMazed, we believe that students need to develop three integrated plans – academic, social, and financial – to be successful as they transition to college. In this stage, there are some very important decisions to be made as a family that will affect the student’s next four years to ensure on-time graduation and an overall great experience. Following the LEADS strategy will help each family focus on each stage of the process in manageable pieces. It is designed for the student to secure the right knowledge at the right time so, as parents, you know they are ready to make their first life-changing decision. COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Chad Oliver
New Student Registration, Choice, & Parent Academy
T
his school year ushered in a new way for parents to engage in their children’s education, and we already are preparing for the next school year. Beginning Feb. 1, parents may register their children for the 2022-23 school year in the A-rated Collier County Public Schools. The online registration (www.collierschools.com/ registration) is for students who are new to the school district or are returning to CCPS, meaning they did not attend a CCPS school this year. There is no need to visit the district offices in person to complete the registration process. Parents may simply upload the required documents and then check status updates through the Online Centralized Registration System. People who are new to our community often will ask where the “good schools” are located. The fact is, CCPS does not have any schools with a ‘D’ or ‘F’ rating. They are all good schools! Whether in Naples, Immokalee, or Everglades City, our students learn from high-quality instructional staff and attend beautiful campuses maintained to a high level of excellence. As the calendar flips to February, we currently are in the middle of an important time for those who prefer an option other than their neighborhood school. Parental

Choice allows parents, under specified conditions, to request another school of enrollment outside of their geographic zones. Options include Out-of-Zone, School Choice, and the McKay and Family Empowerment Scholarships. The priority window for Parental Choice runs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 15. For questions regarding Parental Choice or zoning, call 239-377-0540 or visit www.collierschools. com/parentalchoice. Want to be more involved in your child’s education but have trouble even checking grades online? Help is available! We are excited about the recent launch of our CCPS Parent Academy, which provides educational opportunities and resources for parents to become fully engaged partners in their child’s education. Information
regarding upcoming events, parent seminars, community resources, and continuing adult education programs can be found on the CCPS Parent Academy website at www.collierschools.com/pa. Parents with a CCPS student may register to participate in Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families Parent Series. The free sessions run through May at our high schools across Collier County. And yes, we even will walk you through navigating our online learning management system, Canvas, which allows students to stay on top of assignments even when they physically are not on a school campus. Children greatly benefit when parents are fully engaged in their educational journey, and we are committed to supporting those important connections. Our students and schools are a tremendous source of community pride and are critical to the current and future success of Collier County. Community members often are the best broadcasters of school district information like new student registration, available choice options, and parent resources. The next time someone asks where the good schools are, you’ll know the answer. CHAD OLIVER is executive director of communications & community engagement for Collier County Public Schools.
