It’s time: Summer Camp!

It happens every year–I’m in the grocery store or at a community event and a neighbor or friend who knows that I publish a family magazine asks me “what camp should I send my kids to this summer?” Rather than begin the questioning necessary to offer them the best options (how old are your kids, are they active or quieter, do they need academic help, do they have a favorite sport, etc.) I simply send them to either our April print issue or to the Summer Camp Directory on our website at neafamily.com. With both you’ll find the very best summer camp options for your child. Naples now offers choices that range from academic to sports and everything in

Once that is done you can move on to planning a wonderful summer vacation! How about a summer camp for your entire family? It’s not something I ever considered (or even heard of) but apparently it’s becoming more and more popular and it really does sound like a lot of fun. A week with your kids spent swimming and kayaking, making crafts, singing songs around the campfire and then retiring to your cabin in the woods for the night? I don’t know about you but that sounds pretty perfect to me! Check out Sue open for family camping plus there are many more across the country. Happy planning and have a wonderful April!

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

CCPS Students Compete in Academic Competitions

T

he second half of the school year is passing by and summer is right around the corner. As the number of remaining school days begins to dwindle, the opposite can be said of academic competitions. In 2016 so far, students have already participated in the District Science Fair, Laws of Life Essay Contest, High School Scholar Bowl Tournament, Collier County Spelling Bee, and Odyssey of the Mind. The Marine Science Film Festival is this month, and we still have the Elementary Math Challenge, Middle School Debate Competition, Middle School Scholar Bowl

Tournament, and the annual iSTEM Competition to look forward to in May. In the realm of arts, students have had the opportunity to compete in middle and high school solo and ensemble, honors band, honors chorus, and orchestra. Our newest academic competition is the Elementary Math Challenge. This opportunity is open to students in third to fifth grade who excel at math. Questions go deeper than addition and division. Students are presented with word problems and have to use reasoning skills to find the correct answers. Students compete individually while completing the same set of challeng-

ing math problems in a set amount of time. Each school hosts their own divisional tournament, and the top five students from around the county compete at the district level. The district estimates about 1,800 students across all public and private schools are participating in this competition in its inaugural year. For middle school students who want to improve their public speaking and persuasive writing skills, I’d highly recommend looking into the Middle School Debate Program. Teams of three students from each school have to research topics and compete to persuade a citizen judge,

through speeches and crossfires, to vote for their side of a resolution. Students aren’t told what side they will be arguing for beforehand so it’s up to teams to research and prepare for both sides of a topic. A combination of math, science, social studies, current events, and fine arts are put to the test at the Middle School Scholar Bowl Tournament. Teams of five go head-to-head answering challenging questions about a number of topics against other teams in the district. Every middle school has a team that participates. There are competitions leading up to the county-wide tournament in May.

still have the Elementary Math Challenge, Middle School Debate Competition, Middle School Scholar Bowl Tournament, and the annual iSTEM Competition to look forward to in May. Our final competition of the school year is the 3rd Annual iSTEM Competition held at Florida SouthWestern State College. Students from all levels have a chance to compete in a day of activities focused entirely on science, technology, engineering, and math. Elementary school classes across the district have been hosting LittleBits competitions for the past few months. Now the winning team from each school will have the opportunity to compete at the county-wide competition where student teams will build a LittleBits object with multiple functions. In the middle school division is the Solar Car Competition. Teams from each middle school will participate in a student-built solar car race to see whose car is the fastest on the course. High school students are in for an adventure. In the Geocaching Competition, students use GPS to navigate from one point to another, solving STEM-based problems at each waypoint location. The team that makes it back first wins. There are many opportunities for our students to be challenged with rigorous academic content. I can’t wait to see the results of these competitions and how academic competitions continue to grow in the future.

Lake Park Student Raising Money & Awareness

A

fter a long week of school, 11-yearold Havana Layton enjoys walking through the aisles of Michael’s craft store. Elastic bands, beads, crocheted flowers, embellishments, and other odds and ends could all be used to make a unique headband…and could go toward a good cause. For the past year, Layton sets up her stand on Friday afternoons during lunch at Lake Park Elementary School and sells “Havana’s Headbands for Hope”. Students can be seen across campus adorned with her accessories. She says it feels good when girls are wearing the original headbands but nothing compares to how she feels when she donates the money. Layton says she wanted to make a difference after hearing about the 2015 Nepal earthquake, which killed over 9,000 people and injured more than 23,000. Her relatives had created Project for a Village, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing proper health care and education to people in Nepal. Layton knew this was her way to get involved. “It broke my heart so I just wanted to help them,” Layton says. “They don’t have much clothes, or water, they don’t even have schools so I would just be very grateful if there was a school there.” Since she began this charity, Layton has sold over 100 headbands and donated over $1,000. This isn’t Layton’s first charity though. As principal, Chris Marker remembers a then seven-year-old Havana approaching him in the hallway to request a meeting.

Registration Now Open!

Havana Layton When they sat down one-on-one, Marker says she presented him with a t-shirt adorned with handmade graphics saying “Happy America” and featuring smiling animals holding the American flag. She wanted Marker’s permission to market and sell the shirts at school and donate the money raised to support families in New Jersey who had been affected by Hurricane Sandy. For her efforts, she was awarded with the City of Naples, “Do The Right Thing” Award in 2013. “It’s amazing, it really is that she cares so much about other people,” says Monet Layton, Havana’s mother. “If we could tell her one thing to be in life, it would be to be kind. She’s making us proud.” To say Layton is accomplished at a

young age would be an understatement. Other than her status as a bona fide philanthropist, she serves as one of Lake Park’s news anchors, is a top-ranked swimmer in the country in her age group, and was Lake Park’s only student to receive a perfect score on both the math and reading Florida State Assessment (FSA). She even wrote and recorded the school’s spirit song which is played on a weekly basis during the morning announcements. “It’s my favorite Homer Simpson quote. He says to his overachieving daughter Lisa, ‘Lisa, you’re my greatest accomplishment and you did it all yourself,’” says Havana’s father, Thomas Layton. “We get the same sense about Havana. She has a unique ability to apply herself toward really any task that comes her way.”

To donate directly to Project for a Village, you can visit www.projectforavillage.org. To purchase one of Havana’s Headbands for Hope, contact the district’s communications office at (239) 377-0180 or e-mail communications@collierschools.com.

NEW MOM’S CORNER

By Anna Futrell

Sad Mom

Dealing With Postpartum Depression

T

his very weighty topic of postpartum depression (PPD) is of the utmost importance to new moms in Southwest Florida. My aim is to encourage all new moms, and most specifically, to encourage new moms who may be walking through postpartum depression. In learning more about PPD, I have gained a new understanding of the road that many new moms walk. I hope you will, too. Postpartum Depression Explained Postpartum depression (PPD) is a form of clinical depression that can be experienced by women following the birth of a child. Symptoms can include prolonged sadness, loss of appetite or changes in eating patterns, insomnia, low energy, anxiety, and irritability, among other issues. Several studies have attempted to pinpoint specific causes of postpartum depression, but have been unable to do so conclusively. Many ex12

neafamily.com

perts suspect significant hormonal changes play a role. It is estimated that 10-15% of new moms experience postpartum depression. These are just estimates, though, as some instances of postpartum depression go unreported to care providers. Postpartum depression can impact the bond built between parent and child, can affect a mother’s ability to properly care for her child, and can negatively impact child development. Interestingly enough, PPD can appear in pregnant moms before the birth of their child. Typically, though, PPD appears a couple of weeks to a month after delivery and can last up to a year. However, parents can begin to experience the onset of PPD up to a year following childbirth. In very rare cases, moms may develop a severe form of PPD called postpartum psychosis. These cases may involve severe mood swings, hallucinations, and possibly

require inpatient psychiatric treatment. What to Do if You Are Experiencing the Symptoms of PPD Hormonal changes during pregnancy and following delivery are significant. Some women who experience the symptoms of postpartum depression write these symptoms off as normal for hormonal, sleep deprived, emotional postpartum women. That was certainly my experience. As I researched this topic, the days and weeks following my daughter’s birth came flooding back to me. Memories came to mind of suddenly bursting into tears, low energy, anxiety over small tasks, and extreme irritability with my husband – and I’ve recently felt upset with myself for not being honest with my care provider. I remember my husband lovingly asking me on several occasions, “Are you depressed?” My response was always, “I’ve got this. Please don’t worry NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2016

about me.” Maybe I shouldn’t have written off my symptoms so quickly. As parents, we regard our children as beloved – they are the apple of our eye and the true joy of our lives. These mothers love their children deeply – as deeply as any other parent. The struggle is intense, real, and inexplicable. Yet, there is hope. Postpartum depression varies in degrees, and many parents can find relief from support groups, counseling, and/ or medication. It is vital to seek help and encouragement from those around you. If you are a new mom who believes she is experiencing postpartum depression, tell someone about your experience – your partner, a close relative or friend, your doctor or care provider – as soon as possible. Local Resources for Those with Postpartum Depression For those who may be experiencing PPD, call your obstetrician immediately for an appointment. In my research, I was unable to find any local support groups for those experiencing postpartum depression. However, there are many ways to meet other new moms and seek encouragement through relationships. (For specific suggestions, see the New Moms Corner column from February 2016.) Some Encouragement for New Moms with Postpartum Depression I reached out to local mothers to get their experience with PPD. I am humbled by their willingness to share their experiences with you – what courage that takes! Their names have been changed and their purpose in sharing is to encourage others walking this very difficult road. CEDR 1003 NeaFamily 1-4 pg Horiz.4_Layout 1

Ashley: Mom of 3: I was 13 weeks preg-

nant with my second when we moved to Naples. My husband started a new job, and beginning a new life here was really overwhelming – especially while dealing with the normal emotions of being pregnant. My depression started during the end of my pregnancy. I felt an overwhelming heaviness and a lot of my depression led to anxiety attacks about our decision to move to Naples. My doctor wanted me to wait to take medication until after I delivered (if I felt I could – which I did). It was a really rough month. I felt like I could barely get through my normal day-to-day life with my first child. After I gave birth, I remember walking the hallways of the hospital with my newborn and my husband – and just crying the entire way. I had hoped that maybe when I had the baby, I would be better. But I wasn’t. Thankfully, my newborn was my saving grace – she was my joy in the midst of a really dark place. I got on a small dose of medication about a week after giving birth, and it changed my life. Within about a month, I felt like a new person. But those first few weeks after giving birth, I still felt the overwhelming heaviness of not being able to handle my life. To others dealing with PPD – don’t be afraid to tell someone: your husband, your doctor, a close friend, or your pastor. It’s so much more common than you know. Don’t be afraid of medication. Medicine doesn’t have to be a lifelong decision – it may just be what you need for a short time. Beth: Mom of 2: For me, the worst part about PPD was that you feel as though it should be the happiest time in your life -- I just had a beautiful, healthy baby! Why was I so sad and unbalanced? The guilt of feeling 2/18/13 9:45 AM Page 1 sad was maddening. It was a terrible cycle

of sadness and shame for my sadness. I also had insomnia on top of the already existing sleep deprivation. Melanie: Mom of 2: I never knew how depressed I was until a year after the birth of my child when I started explaining to someone how I felt during that time. The sleep deprivation and the intense needs of a nursing newborn were so consuming and overwhelming that all I could do was cry. I’m thankful that the depression left, but I wish I had asked for help during that time. There were plenty of people who would have helped, but in my mind, I had to prove that I was strong and could do it on my own. I believed the lie that I was all alone and unable to fulfill a role that everyone said would come so naturally to me. To other new moms with a similar experience: please seek help, regardless of how small or large your depression seems. Elizabeth: Mom of 2: I felt like I had a relatively mild form of PPD. I would feel angry with my baby when obviously, nothing was his fault. I would get the feeling of being so overwhelmed with my life with two kids, and it was hard push myself, which is very unlike me! I would allow myself to have breakdowns and cry, and the emotional release seemed to make it better. Hanging out with my like-minded friends made life much more enjoyable until times got easier. For me, PPD was so difficult because I was always the woman who could do it all. I felt embarrassed to admit I was having a hard time. Women don’t want to admit that maybe they aren’t enjoying being a mother because of PPD. Motherhood is much more work and far more overwhelming than anyone makes it out to be. the things he sees are not just remembered, they form a part of his soul.

EARTH DAY

By Tiffany Doerr Guerzon

10 Simple Ways to Reduce Your Trash Output

E

arth Day often serves as a guiltinducing reminder us of what we aren’t doing. Stories about overflowing landfills, marine animals choking on plastic bags and global warming can feel overwhelming. These problems feel too large for one person--or even one family-to tackle. But what if you adopted just one or two greener habits? For example, if you typically bring home four plastic bags of groceries home per week, just using cloth bags will result in a savings of 16 plastic bags per month and 192 bags per year! Read on for easy ways to reduce your family’s trash output.

1.

Ditch plastic water bottles. Invest in reusable cups for water and other beverages such as coffee and tea. Remembering to bring your cup with you, (or for kids, to bring it home from school) will take some getting used to, but it will soon become a habit. A plus is that your coffee or tea will taste better and keep hotter in a china mug. 14

neafamily.com

2.

Stop buying single-serve packages. Those cups of fruit, pudding and fruit snacks sure are convenient, but the trash produced from these can be overwhelming. Instead, purchase larger amounts and divide into into single-serve reusable containers. Ounce for ounce, larger jars and packages are usually cheaper too!

3.

Bring your own bags to the grocery store. Many cities have gone so far as to ban plastic bags! Most stores offer their own reusable bags for a few dollars. You might even find a few cloth bags around the house that you can employ for this purpose. For those times when you forget your bag, choose paper bags over plastic.

4.

Buy in bulk when possible. Many stores offer bulk bins in which you scoop as much or as little as you need of flour, sugar, nuts, and many other dry goods. Not only are bulk goods cheaper, but there is less packaging, especially if

you bring your own bags! In Naples, check Whole Foods, Fresh Market and the new Lucky’s store on the East Trail for bulk options.

5.

Buy and use recyclable mesh bags for fruits and vegetables. Produce bags are created from plastic and aren’t recyclable in all cities. You can buy reusable mesh bags and use these to bring home your fruits and veggies. A bonus to using mesh instead of plastic is that you can store produce in the bag and the material allows for air circulation, so food says fresh longer.

6.

Compost. Take advantage of curbside pickup of food and yard waste. You can also try home composting. Here’s a tutorial to help you get started: www.epa. gov/recycle/composting-home

7.

Decrease your use of disposable flatware and napkins. Buy a cheap set of flatware from a discount or thrift store NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2016

to pack in lunchboxes, and replace paper napkins with cloth. Be sure to purchase napkins that are machine washable. Cotton napkins offer superior absorbency and dark colors or prints will hide stains!

8.

Replace paper towels with rags. Use cut up cotton T-shirts or holey socks or even inexpensive washcloths. You can also purchase “unpaper towels” from many sellers on Etsy. These come with snaps to connect the towels and can be put on a paper towel holder for convenience. Search “unpaper towels” on Etsy for options.

9.

Invest in a reusable K-Cup. If you use a single cup brewing coffee machine, such as Keurig, invest in a reusable K-Cup, then just fill with your own coffee grounds and still brew a perfect cup!

10.

Review the recycling and composting rules for Collier County. You might find that you can be recycling more than you realized, or conversely you might find out that what you’ve been putting into your recycle bin isn’t allowed and ends up in the landfill. For instance, a lot of Neapolitans don’t realize that items shouldn’t be placed inside of bags in the recycling bin. You can review the rules at: www.colliergov.net/i-want-to/recycle/recycling. You’ll also find a video on recycling on the website. Even if you adopt only one or two of these greener practices, it will have an impact. And if everyone reduces their garbage output, together we can make a difference! TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON is a freelance writer specializing in family topics. She can be reached at www.TDGuerzon.com.

She wants to be many things when she grows up, but really wants to be a teacher because she has a fabulous example–Mr. Slinger, who provides the necessary snacks, wears a different colored tie for each day of the week, and seems really cowboy (if you ask me). Lily has always admired Mr. Slinger, until she gets into trouble because she won’t stop showing off her new belonging, and does something she deeply regrets. I think Lily’s Plastic Purse is great because it can really teach younger children a valuable lesson: to think before you act. I really like this section: “Lily’s stomach lurched. She felt like crying. Her glasses were gone. Her quarters were gone. Her purple plastic purse was gone. Lily longed for it all morning. She was even too sad to eat the snack Mr. Slinger served before recess.” I love the quote so much because I can relate to it. When you can relate to a book, you know that the author has truly used the right descriptive words. If I get in trouble in class I ALWAYS want to cry. I never wanted to disappoint my teachers or get them upset with me. Especially when I have a really good teacher. I really enjoy the Mr. Slinger character because he’s a very compassionate teacher: when Lily gets into trouble he doesn’t make a big deal about it. He just handles it the way it should be handled. I’ve always had teachers like that, and I still do. Anyway, Mr. Slinger also is a fun and energetic teacher with all the snacks and outfits. He is a great example for Lily. Kevin Henkes has not only written children’s books, but books for older children. He’s written too many for me to list here. There are several books about Lily and other mouse characters, so that would be a good place to start. I recommend “Lily’s Plastic Purse” to parents who want to read to their babies and toddlers, and to children of any age who love mice, purses, purple, and who LOVE to read. Your reading level at school should never stop you from reading an “easy” book, because we all need a brain break sometimes. Lily wants you to read about her purple, plastic, purse! Josh’s teachers always complained he couldn’t sit still, picked fights, defied authority and didn’t follow directions. It got worse when he discovered marijuana and wouldn’t take his medications. This chemical irregularity led to violent outbursts, legal troubles and depression. Discipline only incited threatening behavior that caused him to be brought to the Crisis Stabilization Unit. His family doubted he would ever graduate. But with the help of the Education Day Treatment Program – a unique partnership with DLC and the Public Schools that helps kids with learning disabilities and behavioral health problems - he thrived on the low class size, self-paced learning model and team effort between the teachers, therapists and family. As the first graduate, he’s armed with feelings of pride and the pursuit of his dreams begins today.

His Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Josh is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in ten of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community. A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

SUMMER CAMPS by Sue LeBreton

W

hen making your summer plans and coordinating camp options for the kids, broaden your thinking and consider family camp. If you have never heard of family camp, it is exactly what it sounds like, a residential camp experience for the whole family, wake up bell included. Why should kids have all the fun? Usually family camp is a cost effective way for all of you to enjoy the outdoors and have the luxury of someone else preplanning the myriad of activities and often the meals as well. When meal planning is removed from vacation you can enjoy activities without having that what’s for dinner question buzzing in the background of your brain all afternoon. Kelly Knuckle, who has attended family camp for 31 of her 41 summers, speaks fondly of the meal plan, “My boys were ages four and two when I first attended as a mom and I loved the communal meal plan. It was a busy, happy environment where we could enjoy a meal that I didn’t have to cook and my children could be as loud and crazy as they wanted to be, but nobody noticed.”

You don’t have to be a veteran camper like Knuckle to embrace the family camp experience. First-time camper, Keri Freeman-Copcutt, mother of a 12-year-old son and a nine-year-old daughter was impressed with her week at a family camp. “We have stayed at many five star resorts who would kill to have their staff as engaged and as motivated as the staff at our camp.” Her family echoed her sentiments. “Our kids loved their time at family camp so much that they both mentioned it as their yearly highlight on our Christmas video.” At family camp you can surround yourself with extended family in a relaxed manner. Imagine sharing time with your siblings, their children, cousins, friends and maybe even grandparents without coordinating activities or food. Anne deSoto has enjoyed multiple trips to family camp, first as a mom and now as a grandma. “What appealed at first and still does, is that it is an example of simple, shared living and all the values implied in that. It was a great way to introduce my children to the camping experience that has greatly enriched their lives.” When her youngest son was married, deSoto suggested family camp to the grand-

Imagine sharing time with your siblings, their children, cousins, friends and maybe even grandparents without coordinating activities or food. children and extended family that travelled across the country to attend the ceremony. “It became an annual family reunion and offered the best bang for our buck.” This style of vacation offers a balance between full-time engaged parenting and a parental getaway. There are often activities that parents and children can participate in separately, providing parents with some free time while building children’s independence. Usually located in a natural setting, camp offers a level of freedom that is a lacking in many children’s lives. Since the routine of camp life is similar from camp to camp, it is also great preparation for children who want to attend camp solo in the future. Not to worry, there are also sports and crafts to enjoy jointly for family bonding opportunities. Depending upon the geography where you choose to vacation, family camps have a wide variety of activities such as: horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing, swimming, hiking, boating, crafting, nature education, Family camps offer a wide variety of activities including horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing, swimming, hiking, boating, crafting, yoga and much more!

yoga and dancing. Freeman-Copcutt sampled many options, “Personally I loved starting the day with the Polar Bear Dip, although I complained each morning about why my son had signed us up for this. I followed this with yoga by the water after breakfast. I also had the opportunity to learn to swing dance with my son at family camp and do T-shirts with my daughter.” At the end of the day each family retires to their own sleeping quarters (these can vary from tents to cabins to hotel-style rooms depending upon the camp). This offers each family some alone time to reconnect and balance the potentially busy day. This privacy also permits the opportunity for smaller children to keep to their regular schedule. For families who return year after year, campers create lifelong friendships. “My favorite part of family camp by far is the camaraderie and closeness we share with the other families at camp. We encourage each other and each other’s kids. We share laughs and hugs, bug spray and Band-Aids, successes and challenges,” says Knuckle. One of the challenges that some camps help families face is camping with a child who has special needs. Some camps provide trained counselors to help the child enjoy camp and offer respite to parents. If you are unsure about an entire week at family camp, many offer weekends as a great way to try on this style of vacation to see if it suits your family. SUE LEBRETON is a health and wellness journalist and mother of two. Her family spent six summers attending a lakeside family camp and recently attended family camp in the mountains. Her clan thinks family camp rocks. Two Florida Family Camps to Consider: Circle F Dude Ranch Located in Lake Wales, Circle F Dude Ranch offers Family Weekend programs ranging from high energy and challenging activities to stress-free. Family Weekend guests will enjoy rustic, bunkhouse-style cabins, located around 500 acres of oaks, rolling hills and lakeside. Each cabin contains six bunk beds and can accommodate up to 12 people. The bunkhouse cabins feature tiled floors, ceiling fans, large open-air screened windows, and air-conditioning. Each bunkhouse cabin includes its own bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet. Included with each family weekend package are six meals and a two-night stay at the ranch along with use of property. 5301 Dude Ranch Road, Lake Wales, Florida 33898 863-676-4113 www.circlefduderanchcamp.com Indian Springs Retreat Center During family camp weekends, families enjoy a cabin all to themselves, meals prepared by the staff, and during the day, a chance to participate in activites from horseback riding, swimming, high ropes, ziplines, archery, and hay rides. At night, camp staff lead Night Walks where your family will get to experiment with your night vision. The evenings end with a campfire complete with singing, dancing, and stories. 2387 Bloxham Cut Off Road, Crawfordville, Florida 32327 850-926-3361 www.indianspringsretreatcenter.com NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2016

SUMMER CAMPS by Anna Futrell

Summer Camps for Children with Special Needs

F

or families with children who have special needs, the approaching summer months can prove to be a daunting obstacle to overcome. The need for childcare, as well as educational bridges between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next, in some instances, creates a burden for families with children who have special needs. Finding high quality summer camp options for children with special needs is a monumental task for many parents in the Naples area. Because of the varying educational, environmental, and physical needs of children, as well as the limited resources to meet these needs within the community during the summer, it can be hard to find a good fit for many families in Southwest Florida. Personal experiences As I discussed summer camp programs with providers and parents, it became very clear

that there are not many options for children with special needs in Collier County, relative to the amount of options for children without special needs. “There are not a lot of options in the summertime, especially for families who need full time care during these months,” says Gini Phillips, a Naples area mom of three children. Her daughter Cara is 11 years old and has Down syndrome. “There are certainly more options than when Cara was born. When Cara was little, I had to hire a teacher’s assistant for over the summer. She was wonderful, but this was ultimately a cost prohibitive solution for the summer months.” Phillips eventually found a small program for Cara through the City of Naples at River Park. “The summer program that Cara goes to now only takes 75 kids, and they have a huge waitlist. It is an amazing program, and I would love for other programs in Southwest Florida to seek to emulate what

the City of Naples accomplishes through the summer camp at River Park,” she says. Another parent, Lee (last name withheld), also shared her summer camp experience. Lee’s son, Nicholas, is on the autism spectrum, has a sensory processing disorder, and has ADHD. “The first summer I attempted to get Nicholas into a camp program was when he was four years old,” Lee says. “Not knowing of any options for kids with special needs, I simply called around to every program director to explain our situation and find out if they would be willing to work with us. Responses varied greatly. Understandably, most explained a lack of resources, and as a result, the inabilty to give a child the extra attention he or she needs. Some invited us to try the program with the requirement we hire our own personal aide to help our child throughout the day. Others were willing to give us a try, with the caveat that if they couldn’t support our child

Though inclusion opportunities are out there in Naples, the need for high quality, affordable summer camp programming specifically for children with a wide range of special needs is great.

we would be asked to leave the program.” Lee ended up placing her son in a summer VPK program. “I chose it based on the fact that they had experience with some special needs kids, and it was led by a certified teacher from within the Collier County system. Unfortunately, we were asked to leave on the second day,” she says. The following year, after additional research and experience, Lee found the Naples Equestrian Challenge, a program serving children and adults of all ages with their year-round program. “They offer an amazing camp experience,” Lee happily reports. “The ratio of counselors to campers is 1:1. You can’t ask for anything more than your child getting the individual support, and they have an exceptional support staff.” What to look for Though the options are definitely limited, as parents seek out programs that provide a fit for their child, there are several questions they should ask regarding the program. Parents should ask for specific information, according to Audra Boxma, head of The Center for ADHD, Behavior Change, and Social Success in Naples, and a licensed mental health counselor. “How long is the camp? (Seven hours a day may be too long considering the curriculum for some children – a half day may be better in some instances.),” Boxma advises. “What is the ratio of students to adults? What are the qualifications of these adults? Walk me through a typical day at camp. Can I meet the staff? What type of kids do you serve in this camp?” Boxma urges parents to request specific information regarding behavioral protocol, as well as the possibility for health insurance coverage in regards to any therapeutic component.

Lee (parent to Nicholas) echoes Boxma’s suggestions. “In my experience, special needs vary so much that most programs, even ones geared to help children with special needs, really can’t promise anything, and do need to operate on a case-by-case basis,” she says. “I would just advise parents to be very honest about their child’s abilities, seek out staff who are willing to work with them, and be flexible.” As they research various summer opportunities, Boxma suggests parents speak to professionals outside of the program. “If parents of children with special needs are working with a counselor, I would ask the counselor to research the program. A trained clinician can make one phone call and get a good sense of the program, and if it appropriate for the child.” Boxma also suggests that parents should look at the summer as an opportunity to strengthen their child’s skills. “School gets harder every year for children with special needs. Summer is a time to strengthen skills,” she notes. “If it is structured and scheduled all summer, the kids will benefit so greatly.” Options available Exactly what summer camp options are available to parents who have children with special needs? There are several camps in Naples that provide special services to families. The following information regarding summer camps and comments from their individual directors is not intended to be comprehensive. For more information regarding the programs, please contact the individual organizations to find out if these camps might be a good fit for your family. • City of Naples. The City of Naples

Making accommodations Many summer camps make accommodations for children with special needs on a case-by-case basis. For example, while the Greater Naples YMCA does not currently have a camp specifically for children with special needs, “we do have children in our traditional day camp who have autism, ADHD, ADD, and other unique needs,” according to Randi Hopkins, summer camp coordinator at the YMCA. “My advice to parents is that they reach out to the camp director before they register to see if the camp would be a good fit.” The Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples (C’MON) is another such camp. “Since C’MON has a commitment to have access for all, we are open to a case-by-case evaluation,” says Beth Housewert, director of play and learning at C’MON. “We do not have specifically designed camps for students with special needs, but have staff who specialize in accessibility and instruction for children with special needs.” Other Naples area camps accommodate children with special needs. Again, it is important that parents ask questions to find out if this type of situation will be successful for their individual child. The need Though inclusion opportunities are out there in Naples, the need for high quality, affordable summer camp programming specifically for children with a wide range of special needs is great. “It is difficult to afford many of the special needs children’s camp programs offered in the community, and in addition, provide the child with reliable, trustworthy transportation to and from camp, considering many of these parents work full time,” explains Robin Goldstone Garcia, director of Lighthouse of Collier – Center for Vision and Blindness. “All services provided by Lighthouse of Collier, including the summer camp program, are free to our clients, thanks to many generous donations.” Other summer camp programs in the Naples community are funded in various ways. As parents continue to seek out summer camps for their children with special needs, it is important that our community as a whole continues to provide support and encouragement to families by being aware and taking action when appropriate. “There are so many wonderful resources for families with children who have special needs,” says Gini Phillips (parent of Cara). “Part of the need in our community is getting the word out about these programs and encouraging these people and organizations in what they are doing!” ANNA FUTRELL has a bachelor’s in English and Secondary Education from Wheaton College.
