When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait for summer break. The last day of school was so full of anticipation of all of the fun I would have swimming, catching fire flies, staying up late, and going to camp.

As a parent, the last day of school creeps up fast and has me in a panic. Did I plan for child care? Camp? Vacation? Are my kids going to forget everything they learned in school?

We know that like us, every parent wonders how their kids can keep busy, healthy, safe, and learning over summer. Even with a vacation or camp planned, you may still have several weeks of unstructured days or lapses in child care.

Neapolitan Family is here to help with our Summer Camp Guide starting on page 21, and our online School Break and Summer Camp directory! We have information about camps for all ages and interests, to fit every family’s summer schedule and budget. Does your tween or teen feel they are too old for camp? We have a special section just for them, starting on page 28, that includes camps for older kids, summer programs, volunteering, and counselor opportunities. Save this issue to refer to throughout camp season, but don’t forget to check our online directory at neafamily.com for last-minute additions or changes.

While you are busy organizing your summer, don’t forget to plan for Passover, Easter, and the mini school break April 7 and 10. On page 12 we have all of the best egg hunts and Easter events, and our online calendar has seders and school break camps to keep kids busy over the long holiday weekend. We are proud to sponsor the Summer Camp Fair at Mercato on April 8, featuring local camps and fun children’s activities, so please stop by our booth to say hello and receive a shopping bag for all of the information you will gather.

Finally, save the date to celebrate Earth Day on April 22! There are several fun and educational events in our calendar for the whole family to enjoy.

Happy Easter and Passover!

C’mon, FGCU Partner to Provide Workshops for Preschoolers

The fourth installment of Shine On workshops kicked off last month at the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples. The program was created by C’mon and Florida Gulf Coast University, and this session includes a partnership with teachers and students from Child’s Path early learning centers.

The six-week program, hosted inside C’mon’s exhibits, helps children build communications skills, develop confidence and self-esteem, build resilience through problem-solving and impulse control, and make healthy life choices. Master’s degree-level interns from FGCU’s clinical mental health counseling program, along with their licensed program supervisor, led the preschoolers from Child’s Path during each session.

Shine On workshops at the children’s museum began in 2021, when instructors in FGCU’s clinical mental health counseling program and C’mon’s leadership noticed a need for small-group programming for young children who may not have been properly socialized due to the overlap of the COVID-19 pandemic with the children’s foundational developmental periods.

“As a teacher, this was an amazing experience to share with children after having been separated from other children and adults,” said a Child’s Path teacher. The Shine On program “was a great opportunity to watch them grow and strengthen skills that they didn’t get a chance to use due to the pandemic.”

Workshops are held on Wednesdays when the museum is closed to the public, giving the Shine On clinicians and participants the museum to themselves. Creating an interdisciplinary mentorship relationship between the Child’s Path preschoolers and the FGCU interns, Shine On promotes self-advocacy, identifying feelings, and making healthy choices.

“I am thankful for this wonderful opportunity for my Spanishspeaking child to be fully immersed with other children learning English and building strong social skills,, especially having been separated from others during COVID-19,” shared a Child’s Path parent.

HCN Is Working to Close the Gaps in Minority Health Care

National Minority Health Month is observed in April, and is an initiative that targets the health needs of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and other minorities. The recognition is rooted in the 1915 establishment of National Negro Health Week by Booker T. Washington. In 2002, the designation received the support from the U.S. Congress needed to establish this annual observation.

The designation is designed to build awareness of the unequal burden of preventable death and illness in these groups. Racial and ethnic minority populations have higher rates of poor health than White counterparts in a range of conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, and heart disease.

The nonprofit Healthcare Network was founded in 1977 to tackle the medical issues of migrant farmworkers, the rural poor, and citizens in Collier County. As the only federally qualified health center in Collier County, Healthcare Network welcomes all patients, regardless of insurance or job status, providing the same high-quality care to all.

Community health centers like Healthcare Network are not ordinary medical clinics. We are also problem-solvers who reach beyond the exam room to care for the whole person and help address the social determinants of health, such as connecting patients to resources, like food and housing, that are essential for a person’s complete well-being.

Here are just a few ways that Healthcare Network is working to address racial health care disparities in Collier County.

Health crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted existing health inequities, with Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, and Alaska Native populations in the U.S. experiencing higher rates of hospitalization and death compared to White populations.

Healthcare Network worked with community partners in Immokalee to provide

culturally and language-appropriate information about COVID-19 to remote, vulnerable communities, helping to combat challenges faced by underserved communities.

Primary care

Racial minorities are more likely to live in primary care shortage areas. Access to primary care is critical because of its role in prevention, chronic disease management, and as an entry point to the health care system.

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration designates nearly all of Southwest Florida as a medically underserved area, meaning that there are too few primary care providers for the growing population.

Yet community health centers like Healthcare Network improve access to highquality primary care for at-risk populations, as well as people with insurance, while decreasing hospitalization rates and use of emergency departments in the states and counties that they serve.

Mental health services

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that racial and ethnic minority groups in the U.S. are less likely to have access to mental health services.

Healthcare Network patients continue

to benefit from an integrated behavioral health model, where patients are screened for mental and behavioral health issues during regular primary care appointments. Combining behavioral and mental health in one setting helps reduce the stigma patients may feel when seeking mental health services.

Maternal health

Black Maternal Health Week is recognized each year from April 11-17. Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, including variations in accessing quality health care.

Healthcare Network’s new maternalfetal medicine program focuses on women with high-risk or complicated pregnancies, specialty care not always available to lowincome mothers. In addition, we offer a wide range of in-office procedures such as management of ectopic pregnancy, the Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) to prevent cervical cancer, and vulvar biopsy. These procedures previously were accessible only to our patients at a hospital, where the cost often was prohibitive.

Recognizing that health care needs to be accessible, affordable, and comprehensive, our commitment to our rapidly growing community is to be innovative in the ways we reach at-risk populations.

In addition, it is increasingly important that the community supports nonprofit organizations already in place and working to address health care disparities in Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities.

JAMIE ULMER is president and CEO of Healthcare Network. He serves on the executive and chair committees for the Florida Association of Community Health Centers and is a member of multiple committees for the National Association of Community Health Centers. For information visit healthcareswfl.org.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

CCPS Celebrates Employees of the Year

Collier County Public Schools is proud to announce its Employees of the Year. Each of these individuals contributes something special to our community and to our students. The school board will honor this amazing group at its regular meeting on May 9. Let’s get to know a bit about them.

Kristen Anselmo at Avalon Elementary has a knack for fostering a sense of wonder in young children. She listens to her fifth graders closely, observes them carefully, and finds ways to draw out their curiosity through exploration. When most teachers might say ‘no’ to an idea (like growing 22 individual plants and letting each child have one on their desk), Anselmo is the one already at Home Depot picking up the materials. Her philosophy is “to see the ‘teachable’ in every child, to find new solutions when it feels like there are none, to ensure every child feels loved and wakes up saying, ‘I can’t wait to get to class today!’” We’re honored to name her our Elementary School Teacher of the Year.

Motivated by her son’s autism diagnosis, Middle School Teacher of the Year Trissa Hasley decided to change the public school system for the better. Her theory that actions speak louder than words makes her a positive role model to both staff and students. The Gulfview Middle School U.S. History teacher works diligently to develop lessons that challenge students to go above their comfort levels. Her lessons, such as performing “Character Autopsies,” keep students engaged and challenged. She instills the values of what it means to be a U.S. citizen. Responsibility, honesty, fairness, and self-discipline are all demonstrated in her daily living.

Lely High School’s Alan Davis is our High School Teacher of the Year. As the teacher responsible for Lely’s Aviation

Academy, Davis’ daily efforts to connect students with career pathways ignites passion, commitment, and determination. His partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University allows qualified students to experience flight in a world where they may have never been afforded the opportunity. His continuous extensions beyond the classroom walls provide an avenue for students to experience hands-on learning while exploring potential careers.

Adult and Community Education teacher Linda Rhines applies problemcentered learning to facilitate the academic skills students need to advance. While not a nurse, Rhines gracefully inserted herself

into the post-secondary nursing training world, working alongside the nursing instructors to implement instructional strategies to support nursing students. She also ignites the potential of CCPS employees. In one particular case, our Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year led one of her former students, who was working as a secretary for four years, on the path to becoming an instructional teacher for CCPS.

A valued employee of Village Oaks Elementary, Maria (Janie) Alcantar is so much more than her title of media assistant. She arrives early each morning to open the gates to the overhead bridge that leads students to campus. Her face is the first one students see as they step out from the winding path of the walkway. She knows each one by name, offering a warm smile and greeting as they pass. The connections and relationships she builds with students only help to emphasize the positive culture and sense of belonging that permeates throughout Village Oaks, and it is one of the many reasons she makes an excellent candidate for Florida School-Related Employee of the Year.

Relationships built within our schools is what inspires Gulf Coast High School’s Sundai Grillo. “We have a chance to connect with our students and colleagues daily in hopes of inspiring learning and helping shape people with hearts to serve others,” explained Grillo, our CCPS nominee for Florida Teacher of the Year.

“As a product of CCPS, I remember sitting in a classroom with a poster that read, ‘Make Life Your Masterpiece.’ As someone who is not artistically inclined, I wondered how this applied to me. How could I make my life a meaningful and beautiful work of art? It was only coming back to my community to teach that I found my passion.”

Keeping Your Vacation Weird

Recently, I offered a few of America’s freakiest roadside attractions for your consideration (Embracing the Quirk Factor , January 2023), including the World’s Largest Potato. It turns out that the 6-ton spud got tired of being rudely gawked at during her seven-year road show. So, the old girl retired to a Boise farm for a sweeter life as – you guessed it – The World’s Only Giant Potato Airbnb. Despite her bland potato-esque exterior, she’s quite charming inside, and comes with a private silo-turned-bath spa. Which brings me to what you’re thinking right now: “Is the World’s Only Giant Potato Airbnb right for me?” Before deciding, you may want to consider one of these.

The Giant Unicorn: Keeping Austin Weird

It looks like a spiky marshmallow dragon to me (look left), but either way, just WOW! The fantastical creature was the eco-fantasy of two brilliant 1970s-era architecture students at the University of Texas at Austin. Way ahead of its time, it slept forlorn for ages, until awaking a few years ago as a super-awesome Airbnb. The free-form stucco creation is as twisty and turny inside as out. Furnished by West Elm, it looks oh, so cozy. Sleeps four. Bring a camera. Visit www.bloomhouse.live.

Navajo Mud Hogan

Seeking deeper immersion into the Navajo culture while visiting Monument Valley? Book yourself an earth-covered simple hogan, built the Navajo way with local juniper beams and a skylight to the stars. Set in the shadow of the famous red sandstone buttes just outside of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, its simple amenities are a queen-size bed, woodburning stove, and an antique ice box, no-frills bed and bath basics, board games, and use of the adjacent bathhouse and playground. No cookware. It’s a perfect grandparentand-me memory-maker, don’t you think? Airbnb: Traditional Navajo Home, Monument Valley, Utah.

Conestoga Covered Wagon

For family-pleasing glamping, check out this four-person air-conditioned tent alternative at the Smoky Hollow Outdoor Resort in Sevierville, Tennessee. There’s a picnic area, shower house, and game room, plus gorgeous mountain views. Nearby are those ubiquitous family must-dos, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, as well as the huge Soaky Mountain Water Park. Visit www. smokyhollowoutdoorresort.com.

Floating Tiki

While the kids are at camp, slip away for your own style camping aboard the Grand Tiki Suite, a movie-set thatchroofed houseboat for two. The upscale new big sister of the simpler Original Tiki Suite floats just offshore in shallow dolphin and manatee habitats. Amenities (besides surreal sunrises and sunsets, a hammock for two on the deck, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear) include a 50-inch TV, Blu-ray play-

er, voice-activated lighting, a mini-fridge instead of a cooler, and soft underwater lighting for romance and nocturnal sea life viewing. Visit www.tiki-suites.com.

A Little Red Caboose for the Kids; A Blue One for You

Two authentic caboose cars set endto-end against a Blue Ridge Mountains backdrop might just be the coolest vacation destination your kids (and a best friend, maybe, and the dog) can imagine. The 96-acre Apple Ridge Farm in Copper Hill, Virginia, has 5 miles of hiking trails, plus tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts, horseshoe pit, fire pit, and a picnic area. It feels remote but you’ve got Wi-Fi, and the refrigerator is stocked for breakfast. Caboose #1 (red) sleeps four; Caboose #2 (blue) sleeps two. Apple Ridge Farm is a nonprofit organization, and its caboose rentals help support farm and camp experiences for underserved children. Visit www.appleridge.org.

The Ark, the Civil War Cabin, and the Tree House Mansion

Kelly’s Jubilee is barely 30 minutes north of Nashville, but it’s another universe, as far as Uber and Lyft are concerned. They’ll take you there from the Nashville airport, no problem, but bringing you back? Not happening. Still, this star-quality destination is so worth the effort. The reclaimed Civil War-era cabin, two treehouses, and other quirky-glam one-of-akind lodgings are tucked among creeks and wildflower fields and a duck pond against a woodsy backdrop. The three-level Ark is my fave, with its fairy lighted deck, hot tub, and luxurious bed and bath amenities. I’m thinking girlfriends retreat, with one of Kelly’s curated special occasion packages. Visit www.kellysjubilee.com.

Marine Life Interest Leads Middle Schooler to Environmental Efforts

Charlotte takes part in all the school community cleanups, helps plan Earth Day activities, has volunteered with Audubon of the Western Everglades for burrowing owl monitoring, has done cleanups at Rookery Bay, and conducts fish surveys. Her latest endeavor is joining a team to do coral reef restoration in the Florida Keys.

“They take plant babies, and you clean them, and then you plant them,” Charlotte described. “This will be my first time. I am very excited about it.”

The seventh grader got scuba certified last year and enjoys diving in the Florida Keys.

“I saw eels and sharks,” she said. “I didn’t get to see a sea turtle, which is my life dream.”

Charlotte says helping the environment isn’t just a phase – this is what she wants to do the rest of her life and plans to study the marine environment in college.

There were no reefs or tropical fish when Charlotte Siepierski was growing up in Buffalo, New York, but when she moved to Naples at the age of 10, she wanted to delve right into this new environment.

Charlotte is now 12, and an environmental leader at the Community School of Naples, where she signs up for any opportunity to help marine life, plant life, and anything else that might help her natural surroundings.

“When I entered middle school they were telling us about electives. I heard we could do Environmental Club, so I joined that. It was really cool, and I was told about scuba. Then, when one of the

high schoolers put together a [fish] tank and wanted a club to take care of the fish, I joined.”

But it was much more for Charlotte than just joining the clubs. It is her passion for the environment that her teachers say sets her apart.

“She has an intrinsic motivation for participating, and she loves the environment,” said Jimmi Stevens, the Environmental Club sponsor who also runs the scuba team and tank team at CSN. “She cares about the habitat. She is hardworking, empathetic, and sweet.”

“She has always been outward looking and thinking of others,” added her father, Joel Siepierski.

“I love the environment,” she gushed. “It is just cool to see everything underwater. That is right up my alley. I want to do something along those lines. Underwater is so cool.”

But she also likes things above water and hopes to do a tree planting project.

“It is such a small thing you can do, but it has such a big impact,” Charlotte said.

When Charlotte isn’t busy helping the environment, she plays volleyball and softball, and participates in Odyssey of the Mind. She enjoys spending time with her parents, her older brother, Nate, and younger sister, Evie.

“Charlotte is hardworking, dedicated, kind, funny, quirky, and wonderful,” wrote Colleen Potocki, CSN’s head of middle school.

Why Summer Camp?

To those who have never been, summer camp can seem like a fun and exciting way for children to spend their summers, staying active and busy with new friends and new experiences. But as any former camper will tell you, it is far more than that. For parents wondering why they should send their child to summer camp year after year, rest assured that it isn’t simply canoes and campfires. It’s an investment in their children’s development and future. Camp is a home away from home, a school away from school. It is a family and a teacher, ensuring that campers have the love, support, and tools needed to learn and grow.

A way to form lifelong connections

In an increasingly digitized world, friendships born from face-to-face interactions are being replaced by remote connections on social media. Our campers are required to put their phones away to spend time and experience life with the people around them. We see children forming friendships with an intimacy and realness that can’t be replicated on a screen. Camp friendships have been known to last a lifetime, and unlike those they make in their school, the geographical reach of a summer camp population is often much wider. In years past, Camp Highlander has had campers from 27 different states and 19 different countries. During their years at summer camp, campers can form meaningful, lasting connections with people all over the world. It isn’t uncommon to see camp connections providing internships, job opportunities, or just another helping hand to those whose camp years are long over.

A place for personal growth

Studies have shown that summer camps aid in healthy child development. We’ve seen that camp makes kids more resilient to stress. Living in a cabin unit, campers learn how to build relationships and navigate social dynamics different from what they experience at home. They learn to live with a new group of peers and adults, learning to work as a team, problem solve, and operate effectively outside their comfort zones, all without the help of a parent.

Camp fosters independence and self-sufficiency, which can be the boost needed to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. And this can allow kids to grow and change in positive ways. Camp can be a space for children to reinvent themselves. In children’s everyday lives they often grow up in the same group of peers, coaches, and teachers, which can leave them categorized in a certain way or perceived in a certain light. In school, they might be seen as quiet or shy, when

they might actually be outgoing if given the chance. According to research, camp can offer a positive environment for children to explore who they are and how they’d like to be perceived.

A tool for future success

Camp can give kids the tools and skills needed to be more effective students and professionals. A five-year impact study conducted by the American Camp Association found that campers learn complex relationship skills, are more appreciative of individuals with different backgrounds and values, are more willing to try new things, and consider themselves to be more independent because of their experience as campers.

So why return?

Just like a single school year or sports season, kids can benefit from a single year at camp. But just like several years of school or sports, returning to camp each summer creates a foundation that builds upon itself. Children benefit from the routine, rhythm, and structure that camp provides, and each summer they build on the relationships and lessons gained the year before. By the time their summer camp days are over, they will have spent years learning how to problem solve, operate outside their comfort zones and work with others, overcome failure, and be confident in themselves. Not only will they have fond memories and great friends, they will have the tools and skills needed to help them achieve the goals they have for the future.

Parents know the tween and teen years won’t be easy. But how many of us anticipated that one of the more difficult tasks associated with parenting our kids through these years would be figuring out how they would spend their summers? Luckily, there are options for families in Southwest Florida, but they do take some investigating to find. So we have done the leg work for you, and tracked down a wide range of volunteer and summer camp opportunities for area teens and tweens. It’s worth nothing that several organizations offer both volunteer positions and summer camp for teens. Plus, on page 30, check out Andrea Stetson’s article on affordable camps for this age group.

An added benefit for high schoolers (including rising ninth graders) is that the they can earn volunteer hours that count toward scholarship requirements. Check with your school counselor to confirm.

Affordable Camps for Tweens and Teens

range in price from $150 to $310 a week and teach a variety of technical skills.

• Wheels BMX Summer Camp is taught by a professional BMX rider and costs $125 per week.

• The county also offers half-day water ski and sailing camps.

• The least expensive camp for tweens is the Collier County Middle School Camp, which costs $600 for the entire summer. Campers take nature walks, play games, make arts and crafts, participate in different sports, swim, and take field trips.

Aaron Hopkins, regional manager for Collier Parks, said its programs are a safe place for teens and tweens to spend their summer, and the specialty camps are taught by experts. And he is happy to see the return of such a large menu of activities after the pandemic curtailed the county’s programs.

Your tween or teen is now old enough to stay home alone. But leaving them at home all day, all summer might not be a great idea. Will they spend every day on their phones or computers? Will they get in trouble because they are so bored? That’s the dilemma facing many parents of older kids.

While there are specialty camps for activities such as sports, dance, music, theater, and nature, many of them are for only a week, or only for the morning, making it hard for working parents to shuttle their kids around. Parents spoke about spending hundreds of dollars a week for a morning program, only to have to leave work to bring their kids home halfway through the day. So we looked for low cost camps that fit a parent’s work schedule, and found the local

parks had the best prices and longer hours.

Collier County Parks and Recreation’s summer camps aren’t just for little kids anymore. There is a huge menu of options for teens and tweens.

• Junior Leader Training is aimed at kids ages 13-18 and teaches them leadership traits such as accountability, confidence, dependability, and empathy. Those who complete the program are eligible for a junior leadership internship at the elementary and middle school camps.

• The junior lifeguard program doesn’t offer certification, but teaches the water safety skills needed to advance to lifeguard

How to Keep Your Kids Safe at Summer Camp

It’s no exaggeration to say that the one event kids really look forward to all year is the summer camp. But how do you choose the right one for them? Based on my experiences as the parent of a teenager as well as conversations with other parents, I’ve figured out the most important things to consider.

Letting your kids go off to summer camp can be hard for us as parents. When they are with us, we can do our best to keep them safe. But sending them somewhere else can leave us worried and uncertain.

Whether you are sending your kids for a day or a whole summer, here are some things you can do to keep them safe at summer camp.

Know the camp

Before you send your child to a camp, it is important to understand where you are sending them. Research the camp and talk to other parents who have sent their kids. Consider the leadership structure and training. Inquire about the screening of employees and certifications for lifeguards and nurses. Understanding these basics will help you know that the camp is a safe place for your child.

Address health concerns

If your child has any health issues, take time to talk to the

Special Advertising Section Summer Camp 2023

nurse. Address any allergies, asthma, medications, and other health concerns. It is best if you can talk to the nurse on the phone about this as opposed to email. Work together to develop a clear plan specific to your child and confirm via email after talking. This will keep them safe, ensure everyone is on the same page, and set your mind at ease.

Talk to your child

One of the best ways you can keep your child safe is to equip them with what they need to know. It can be uncomfortable to talk about things like abuse with kids, but there are age-appropriate ways to do so that will help them in the unlikely event that could occur.

Body safety: Start by talking about their body. Help your child understand that their body is theirs, and no one else should do anything to their body that makes them feel uncomfortable. Discussing private parts, or the parts we cover with a bathing suit, is helpful. This doesn’t need to be a lecture. Instead, make it a natural part of conversation in the weeks and months leading up to camp.

Phone number: Make sure that your child has your phone number accessible since many camps do not allow kids to carry electronic devices. You can help them memorize it, write it on their belongings, or use things like custom temporary tattoos so they have your number available.

Safe adults: Additionally, help them understand who to go to if they feel uncomfortable. Talk about the different people they should seek out. For example, the camp nurse often is a good person to go to for anything.

Secrets: It is also helpful to have conversations about secrets, as inappropriate behavior often is connected to keeping it secret. Lay the groundwork for a family without secrets, and talk about how secrets can be a red flag for dangerous behavior.

Stay in groups: Your child also should know that going places or doing activities with one other person is not what camp is about. Help them understand that they should always be with more than one adult.

These things may sound intense to talk to your child about, however, you can do so in little ways that make a big difference.

Get your child ready

Making sure your child is safe can also relate to what they know how to do. If your child is going to a camp with swimming, it is strongly advised to invest in swim lessons before the camp begins. It is not enough to rely on the skills of a camp lifeguard. They often are watching dozens of children at once. Even a few basic swim lessons will help your child learn important skills such as floating and basic strokes so that they are safer when swimming.

Camp is a fun time to try many new things. Make sure you know the activities offered to your child during their summer camp experience. Camps can have arts and crafts, boating, rock climbing, archery, and more. Prepare them by stressing the importance of following directions and adhering to rules. This may seem obvious, but camp can be a wild and exciting place. Expressing your enthusiasm for all the activities your child will do while reminding them about listening and rules is key.

Doing these things in the time leading up to summer camp will help your child stay safe and help you rest easy.
