THIS MONTH: Back to School

The summer is flying by and it’s almost time for the first day of school. Your family will have a little over 2 weeks to enjoy your last days of vacation and to get ready for the coming year. I hope you make the most of each day before the busy days of the school year arrive. Most Collier children will be returning on Monday, August 17 so our Back to School Expo on August 8 is the perfect time to gather some information on services you will need for your family for the coming months. We’ll be at the Greater Naples YMCA so please stop by to say hello! You’ll find a variety of vendors including local businesses and non-profit organizations plus the Collier County Sheriff’s Department, Collier County Fire Department and Collier County Public Schools representatives. It’s always a fun day so be sure to get there early. Most of this issue is devoted to back to school. Cover photographer Peggy Farren and I had fun shooting this month’s cover and the photos that accompany our creative back to school photos article on pages 38-40. You’ll also find a list of local organization sponsoring back to school drives or giving out supplies and clothing to children in need on pages 36-37. Stacy Nicolau has been hard at work compiling the Team Sports Directory on pages 42-45. You’ll find dozens of entries in 12 different sports. We’ll post the information online and keep it updated throughout the year so you know when it’s time to sign up for each sport. Finally, it’s time for our annual Cover Kids Contest. This year Mercato is sponsoring the event and the Grand Prize winner will receive a photo package as well as a gift certificate from GiGi’s. We choose our 12 finalists first and then you’ll have a chance to vote on your favorite online. This is the ONLY chance you have to see your child on our cover so head to neafamily.com for information on how to enter your children’s photo for consideration. Happy Back to School!

Family Movie & DVD Reviews N

ew movies this month include the animated family film “Underdogs,” a Khalil Gibran book adaptation, and a couple of remakes -- “Fantastic Four” and “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and on DVD and Blu-ray this month. Note that release dates are subject to change.

Get ready for an avalanche of wool from the latest Aardman Animations film (I love these films). When Shaun the Sheep decides to take the day off and have some fun, his mischief inadvertently leads to The Farmer being taken away from the farm to the Big City. As Shaun, Bitzer and The Flock make plans to rescue the missing Farmer, it’s a story about how we sometimes forget to appreciate the things we have in life and the people who love us. This movie introduces us to two new Aardman characters: Trumper, the animal warden who rules the city’s animal shelter with a rod of iron; and Slip, an inner city orphan dog who helps Shaun save the day.

Directed by Josh Trank (“Chronicle”) and inspired by the “Ultimate Fantastic Four” comics (the first arc of which was written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar, with Joe Kubert illustrating), this movie offers a modern take on Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team. The story centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. The team must learn to harness their new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy. The cast includes “Whiplash’s” Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, “House of Cards” star Kate Mara as

backdrop of the early 1960s at the height of the Cold War, this spy thriller centers on CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Ilya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), who are forced to put aside longstanding hostilities and team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization that’s bent on causing chaos via nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization. It’s a race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

From The Weinstein Company and director Juan Jose Campanella comes this animated adventures featuring the voices of Matthew Morrison, Ariana Grande, Nicolas Hoult, Bella Thorne, Katie Holmes, and John Leguizamo. The story follows Jake (Morrison), a shy but talented foosball player whose passion for the game is rivaled only by his love for free-spirited Laura (Grande). With her encouragement, he beats the town bully, Ace (Hoult), in a foosball game, but everything changes when Ace becomes the world’s best soccer player and returns years later to turn their village into a new sports stadium. He starts to destroy everything, kidnaps Laura in the process, and just when all hope seems lost, the toy figures from Jake’s foosball table come to life. He and the players embark on a wild adventure to save Laura, reclaim their village and save the day with the help of his team, his town, and a little magic.

Based on Khalil Gibran’s best known fictional work, this animated production involves collaborations across many borders. Each of the 89-year-old classic’s chapters is directed by a different award-winning filmmaker, including Tomm Moore, Nina Paley, Michal Socha and others, with Roger Allers (“The Lion King”) connecting the narratives together. Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek, Quvenzhane Wallis, John Krasinski, Alfred Molina and Frank Langella are a few of the actors voicing characters in the film. One of the best-selling books of all time, “The Prophet” has sold more than 100 million copies since its original publication in 1923. The Lebanese-born Gibran is the third most-read poet in history, after Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu, and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

This sweet film from Disneynature throws a spotlight on a newborn monkey and its mother. Struggling to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic

group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins in the jungles of South Asia, they’re joined by a rich cast of forest characters. Life is grand, food is plentiful, and safety is assured -- but only if you’re lucky enough to be born on the higher rungs of the Troop’s social ladder. But this young mother and her infant find themselves in a constant state of hunger and peril from higherranking monkeys. It’ll take a lot of ingenuity, hard work, and a little luck to change their place in the world.

THE LONGEST RIDE

The first “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” movie was fun and silly (because we need that sometimes, right? ), and this sequel is more of the same, though perhaps not quite as good as the first movie. After six years of keeping our malls safe, Paul Blart has earned a well-deserved vacation. So he heads to Vegas with his teenage daughter Maya (super cute Raini Rodriguez) before she heads off to college. But safety never takes a holiday and when duty calls, Blart answers.

HAPPY, HEALTHY FAMILY

By Sandra Gordon

I

Is Your Child Overwhelmed?

t’s a vicious cycle. The more the stress response gets triggered--when the brain’s limbic system floods with chemicals, our hearts pound faster and our muscles tense—the more sensitive the brain becomes to it. As a result, feeling stressed can become your child’s go-to response to not just life-threatening events, like the threat of an oncoming car, as it was intended, but everyday life, such being called on in class, a pop quiz or trying out for the travel soccer team.

All kids feel anxious from time to time. And who can blame them? From the pressure to succeed at an earlier age, to jam-packed weekdays and weekends filled with homework, sports practices, music lessons, play dates, birthday parties and other extracurricular activities, it’s easy to feel frazzled. You can help your child develop the needed skills for staying calm.

Your Child’s Brain—On Stress Being in a chronic state of fight or flight can influence your child’s mood and behavior, her ability to form relationships with others, and just enjoy being a kid. It can also affect your child’s intellectual potential. Still, tests, the pressure to achieve, the latest technology, social media and extracurricular activities aren’t going away. “There’s a lot we can’t do about the society our kids are growing up in,” according to Kristen Race, Ph.D., author of Mindful Parenting, “but we can teach kids to be more resilient to the stressors modern life presents.”

Four Tips To Help Your Child Cope With Chaos

These tension-taming tactics can help your child stay calm amidst the chaos. 1. Structure in downtime. Having little to no unstructured, self-directed time may be the norm these days. But many kids would benefit from having opportunities to do nothing much. “Kids need more downtime than adults,” says David J. Schonfeld, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine. From a child’s perspective, lack of downtime “can feel like it’s 10 days before Christmas and you haven’t done your shopping, sent out your cards, or put up the tree,” he says. Taking a breather gives kids a stress outlet, the latitude to develop their creative side and learn to become problem solvers. After all, when children engage in free play,

they call the shots, make up the rules for their games, set the boundaries and adapt to changing situations. It may also help kids and teens learn to connect with others. Conversely, “structured activities are like going to a movie. You’re socializing with other people, but you don’t really have to talk,” Dr. Schonfeld says. He suggests quarantining at least one day each week that’s free of outside events, including outings on the weekends such as visiting an amusement park. “Many parents equate quality time with doing something special. But when you add pleasurable activities to an already full schedule, it’s exhausting,” he says. “Carve out time to just be together, talk and do simple things at home.” How much you put the brakes on your child’s schedule can depend on her temperament. Some kids can naturally handle more without going into overload. “Every child is different,” says Tanya Remer Altmann, M.D., a pediatrician and author of Mommy Calls. “But when I hear moms say things like, ‘My daughter has a play date, then I’m taking her to gymnastics, and then she’s starting her homework,’ I think, Whoa! That’s way too much.’ I recommend no more than one activity per day after school.” Dr. Race takes a similar tact. She suggests limiting afterschool activities to two per week, such as soccer and dance, or Boy Scouts and football, especially for children age 10 and under. 2. Heed your child’s stress signals. Even after factoring in down time, stay attuned to signs that your child is overscheduled or under too much pressure from school, friends, or other sources. Children react to stress differently, but there are telltale signs. “Young children who feel overwhelmed

may have trouble sleeping, find it difficult to separate from parents, or feel reluctant to go to school,” says David Fassler, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Vermont School of Medicine. They may also be tired, anxious, moody, or not feel energetic or enthusiastic about activities that should be fun, like going to a birthday party. School-age kids may also try to avoid an overwhelming activity by procrastinating or losing key pieces of equipment, such as their soccer cleats, so they can get out of going. They can also experience physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches. Pre-adolescents and teens have a greater repertoire for expressing themselves, including telling you, “Mom, I’m so overwhelmed,” but their clues can also be indirect. They may become angry, irritable or weepy. “They may start fighting with parents or siblings, or have problems at school or with their friends,” Dr. Fassler says. Being aware of your child’s stress signals can help her learn to manage her feelings. Encourage your child to let you know when she feels overwhelmed and brainstorm possible solutions together, which might mean taking a break or lightening her load, for example, by dropping an extracurricular activity, participating in a recreational rather than a competitive sport, or transferring to less challenging class in school. Also, mention your own stress-management tactics. If you typically complete work projects a few days before the deadline to avoid last-minute pressure, for example, say so when your child has homework projects due. “Kids can learn to manage their situations to avoid feeling overwhelmed

LITTLE PEOPLE’S SCHOOL • For 2-5 year olds 868 94th Ave. N, Naples (239) 597-5064

and they’ll take their cues from you,” Dr. Fassler says. 3. Take personal time-outs. Similarly, take a look at your own lifestyle. Are you modeling calm? Signs you might not be: You’re constantly doing something or rushing from your job to home and back again. Overscheduled kids tend to have overscheduled parents and stress has a trickledown effect. “Even babies can pick up on Mommy’s nonverbal communication,” Race says. “It’s how we learn empathy.” Taking time to do what you want rather than what’s expected of you sets a healthy example, whether it’s exercising, hanging out with your family, meditating, practicing yoga or whatever it takes to nurture and soothe yourself. “You have to manage your own stress before your kids can manage their own,” Race says. 4. Emphasize effort, not grades. Many kids put a lot of academic pressure on themselves. “Adolescents are especially quick to think ‘If I don’t get an A on this, I’m going to fail everything,’” says Adelle Cadieux, PsyD., a pediatric psychologist at Helen De Vos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Parents can buy into it too, equating lesser grades, especially in high school, with a teen’s prospects for college. But the fight or flight mode isn’t conducive to academic success. To help kids stay calm, and do the best they can, don’t focus on grades. “Praise your child’s effort, perseverance and progress as opposed to the outcome,” Dr. Cadieux says. The lesson? “Your child can’t always get an A, but he can learn that working hard is important.” SANDRA GORDON is an award-winning freelance writer who delivers expert advice and the latest developments in health, nutrition, parenting and consumer issues.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

By Katie Tanner, Communications Specialist for CCPS

2015-16 School Year: New Faces in New Places

C

an you smell that? It’s the unmistakable aroma of a fresh pack of crayons. The back-to-school season is officially here! If you can’t tell, I am excited to start a new school year – and I know I am not the only one. All summer long the staff at Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) has been hard at work preparing for another phenomenal year. They are ready to welcome everyone back for the first day of school on Monday, August 17th. This year, students at nine of our schools will be welcomed by a new principal. Six of these principals are new to the role but come from positions within CCPS. The other three are principals that were reassigned for a variety of reasons like retirements. I talked with all nine principals about their new positions, and every single one of them can’t wait to see the students’ smiling faces. “I am looking forward to learning about each of the children and what excites each of them about learning and life,” says Karey Stewart, who is taking over the top spot at Tommie Barfield Elementary this year. Stewart has had many years of experience as a teacher, administrator, and principal. She is replacing Dr. Jory Westberry who retired last year after spending 14 years as principal of the school.

14

neafamily.com

August 2015.indd 14

Dr. Susan Barcellino moved from Lely Elementary to lead students and staff at Pelican Marsh Elementary this year. She is replacing Dr. Jim Gasparino, who also retired. Dr. Barcellino tells me she has a collaborative leadership style. “I believe when family and school personnel work collaboratively, student success is guaranteed,” explains Dr. Barcellino. Christa Crehan, a former administrator at Vineyards Elementary, will now serve as principal at Lely Elementary. Crehan believes an elementary school is the core of a community. “I want to help my students understand how to rise to their potential,” says Crehan. Students at Highlands Elementary will also be greeted by a new principal, Laura Mendicino. She is not new to the Immokalee area, previously serving as an assistant principal at Lake Trafford Elementary. “Students are at the forefront of every decision I make,” explains Mendicino. Rounding out the changes at the elementary school level, Jessica Campbell will be taking the lead at Avalon Elementary this year. She comes from Parkside Elementary where she held an administrator role. One of Campbell’s many goals this year is to increase parent involvement. “Parents should know that I consider myself a servant leader and believe in empowering others to share in the leadership of the school,” says Campbell. New faces are also in place at several of our high schools this year. “I am looking forward to becoming a part of the great

tradition and success at Barron Collier,” explains Jose Hernandez, who previously held the role of principal at Golden Gate High. Dr. Tobin Walcott, who previously served as an administrator at Golden Gate High, will be taking over as principal. “This is an amazing school with great students, and I am most looking forward to continuing to provide our students with a rigorous education, preparing our students for post-high school opportunities, and working with a very dedicated and talented staff,” says Dr. Walcott. The Trojans at Lely High School (LHS) will also start the year with a new leader, Ryan Nemeth. “My leadership style is simple. I have an open-door policy.” Nemeth comes from Oakridge Middle School where he served as an assistant principal. Nemeth is looking forward to building upon the successes LHS has earned under former principal, Leslie Ricciardelli, who took over the district position of Executive Director of Secondary Programs. Finally, a familiar face will take the lead at Everglades City School. “My last three years here as the assistant principal have been a tremendous experience. The relationships that have been developed will serve me well in this transition,” says Jim Ragusa. He tells me it will be tough to replace Bob Spano, who retired after 22 years, but he knows he has the support of an excellent staff. “I cannot say enough about the quality of people at our school who dedicate their lives to making a difference for our students.”

The amount of daily reading time varies depending on the child’s age and school workload, but whether it is 10 minutes or 60, your child will learn to enjoy reading and will improve their vocabulary and comprehension in the process.

An Unofficial Back-to-School Checklist

As we all prepare for back-to-school, I’d like to offer a less traditional back-toschool checklist of “to-do” items that have served our family well over the years.

W

ho doesn’t love summer? At the end of the school year we are all ready for a break from homework, practices, and papers coming home (seriously!) But, by summer’s halfway point, I am looking forward to the routine and normalness of the school year. As it happens, I was blessed with the gift of organization – I am a list-making, schedule-loving, home-manager-in-chief. As a busy, working mom with three (or four, if you count my husband) boys to care for, my home thrives on order. I often get comments like, “I don’t know how you do it” or “You seem like you’ve got it all together.” Of course that’s not always the case – like you, there are many times when it seems like nothing is “together” and my house is in disarray.

1.

Mondays to Thursdays are “unplugged” with TV, Video Games, and all other electronic entertainment are shut down. When are oldest was a baby, we noticed that the evenings just flew by if we were NEAPOLITANfamily • August 2015

watching television, and it didn’t seem like “quality” time. We made a rule then, and continue today, to spend time together as a family without distractions during the school week. First, it helps tremendously with homework time – there is no rushing through in order to watch TV or get on the computer. Second, we enjoy making precious memories during our sometimes brief time after- school and work – playing board games and cards, cooking, talking, or playing outside.

2.

Year-round reading lists. Reading-for-pleasure should not be reserved only for the summer months! Cultivating a love of reading in our children is one of the most important things we can do for their long-term educational success. No matter what required reading they are doing in school, your student should also have a book they are reading for “pleasure” – and by that I mean, they chose the book (from a list of options you present) and it’s not for a grade (although you should hold

Eat dinner together, and share your highs and lows of the day. It is so important that we parents know what is going on with our students during the school day, but pulling that information out can be a monumental challenge (especially with boys!) Consistently sitting down to dinner as a family takes serious commitment and organization, but helps tremendously. First, you’ll need something to eat at home! I block off a few hours on the weekend (sometimes early in the morning or late at night) to shop for groceries and immediately get meals ready for the week. I love to cook, but I keep it simple and quick. The crock pot is your friend! Eating together (and the interaction that activity provides) is far more important than what is on the plate. Second, homework happens immediately after school - grab a snack and get to work, kids. If my sons go to after school care, I make sure the staff know they must complete homework before any other activity. This way when it’s time for dinner, no one is rushing through. Our family goes around the table to share the “highs” and “lows” of the day, which prompts discussion of the good and the bad happening at school. Your student’s home life has a tremendous effect on their success in the classroom. Quality relationships in the home build your child’s confidence, which helps them to do their best. Also, we know that parental involvement is the number one indicator of academic performance. So, I challenge you to make your own ‘unconventional back-to-school checklist’ of ways your family can improve home time, and have a positive impact on school as well! FAMILY MEALS

By Heather Lee Leap

LUNCH PACKING

W

From Dread to…Doable

elcome to August, when Naples kids head back to school and parents all over town commit themselves to packing nutritious, delicious lunches their kids will love. Until reality sets in. Then life and schedules and parenting fatigue begin to undermine our good intentions. Lovingly-packed lunches that go uneaten, the spectre of time spent at the kitchen counter or the need to stick to a budget can wear away the strongest resolve. This year, let us bolster your determination with answers to some of your most troubling lunch-packing questions. How can I get my kids to eat more of what I pack? • Invite your children to create a list of favorite foods, and don’t forget to ask how they like them prepared. You may think your kids hate carrots, when in fact they only dislike them raw and are willing to gobble them up when served steamed. • Cut fruit such as apples into wedges. A child confronted with a whole apple will take a few bites and toss the rest. Smaller bites are less daunting and will

16

neafamily.com

August 2015.indd 16

result in your child eating more over the course of the day. • Go for variety. Small quantities of different foods will have more appeal than a large amount of one thing. How can I save time when packing lunches? • Store all of your lunch-packing equipment in one location. Designate one drawer for all sandwich and snack containers, wraps or bags, thermoses and stray water bottles. • Assign one color of storage container to each child. This helps if you provide kids with different foods, or prepare them differently. You can pack in advance and not have to re-open containers to determine the recipient. You’ll also know at a glance who is, or is not, eating their lunch each day. • Keep frequently used non-perishable lunch items in the same cupboard, ideally on the same shelf. Or store them in a tub that you can pull off the shelf in one move and bring to the counter. • When storing leftovers after dinner, determine what can be packed in

tomorrow’s lunch. As you put food away, divide portions directly into single serving containers, one for each child. • Reserve a shelf in the refrigerator for lunches. In the morning, grab items from the shelf and pop them into lunch boxes. • Recruit your children to pack their own lunches. You will save time while they learn responsibility and a necessary life-skill. How can I make lunch-packing more affordable? • Always include leftovers. Beans, steamed vegetables and grain or pasta salads hold up well and taste good cold. Soups, stews and other main-dish meals can be heated in the morning and placed in a thermos. • Buy in bulk and repackage food into individual servings. Don’t limit this concept to snack foods. Buy the family-sized tub of yogurt and serve it in half-cup sized containers. • Avoid processed, pre-packaged lunch foods. Not only are they expensive, they contain excess sodium and chemicals that your kids don’t need. • Invest in reusable containers, bags and wraps. Visit www.reusit.com/ for a wide range of products. • Finally, resist the pressure to have every meal be a work of art. Instead, keep your goals modest and manageable. And when you feel your lunch-packing momentum begin to flag, pull out this list as a reminder to streamline your system. Chances are your organizational structure and planning have begun to deteriorate. Take a breath. You can do it. The Conservancy is packed with indoor exhibits to keep you cool in the summer heat. Be sure to check the complete schedule of programs and events inside the newly remodeled Welcome Center. Daily programs include a Conservancy-led presentation featuring live animals including native reptiles, beach creatures and occasionally a glimpse of a rehabilitating animal inside the von Arx Wildlife Hospital. Relax and watch a 5-minute ‘behind-the-scenes’ video about the work inside the wildlife hospital while your little ones put on a lab coat and transform into junior veterinarians.

Alost inside, Eaton Conservation Hall and the Jeannie Meg Smith Theater offer guests a place to sit, relax and enjoy a state-of-the-art 7-minute movie about Southwest Florida’s environment and the important work at the conservancy. BACK TO SCHOOL

By Peggy Farren & Andrea Breznay

Creative Back to School Photos M

Make this year’s crop of back to school photos your best ever with our technical and creative tips!

ost Collier schools are back in session on Monday, August 17 and parents will be taking a photo or two of their children on that special first day. This year why not make an effort to be a little more creative? Cover photographer Peggy Farren of Avant Garde Photography and I teamed up to brainstorm a few ideas that will take your shots from boring to creative and memorable. Our cover models for the month were our subjects and we used a variety of simple props that take your back to school photos from boring to fun! Peggy’s Technical Tips Think about lighting and where you will take the pictures. • Overhead light (such as the sun) is not pretty. Your child will have dark eye sockets if you take pictures with the sun above. Use your flash to “fill” in the shadows. A small pop-up flash will not be very strong, but it should improve the picture. • Better yet, look for “open shade”. Put your child in the shade, but just on the edge so that light filters in on his face. If the child is too deep in the shade, it will just be dark. • If you are taking pictures inside, you may get a color cast from the tungsten or fluorescent lights. You can change your camera’s white balance to overcome this problem. Look for “white balance” in your menu. You’ll be able to change your white balance to the lighting situation. • You will probably need your flash if you are taking pictures inside. Composition: • Take wide, medium and close up photographs to tell the entire story. You’ll want to see the environment, but also capture close ups of your child’s face as they anticipate their new school year. • Be sure your background doesn’t have too many distractions. Try not to have a horizon or anything coming through the child’s head or neck. • Keep in mind that our eyes are attracted to the brightest part of the picture. If your child is standing next to something bright, the emphasis may not be on him. Move him or yourself for a better composition. • One common mistake is to leave too much room around your subject. Zoom in so there is not too much environment around your child. • Anytime you photograph children, keep in mind it should be fun and light hearted. Don’t add to the stress your child is already feeling by holding a grueling photo session. • For people and animals, the eyes should be on a rule of thirds gridline. It’s okay to cut off the top of someone’s head as long as their eyes aren’t too high up in the picture. Also with the rule of thirds, if you can place your subject on a “power point” your photograph will have the most visual impact. • One more composition guideline; if your child is facing one

way or the other, be sure there is room in front of the way they are facing for the most pleasing image. Andrea’s Creative Tips • Try a different angle. Instead of photographing your child from the front, take a picture of them from behind as they are walking away from your front door or down the sidewalk. If you walk them into school, take the last shot as they enter the front doot. • Use props. You can make an inexpensive chalkboard sign like ours with a cheap blackboard from the crafts store and a few wooden rules. Use a glue gun to attach the rulers and pencil sand you have a cute prop you can use every year. Inexpensive chalk pens make artistic writing easier. Apples, stacks of books, and signs all add interest to the photo. In our juggling photo, we had the child hold the two apples and then Photoshopped the third into the picture. • The t-shirts in our cover shot were made using Jolee’s Image Transfers, purchased at Joann’s. You can log onto the company website to set up your image and then simply run it through your inkjet printer. • Get candid! Take a few shots of that first day of school breakfast or a shot of your child combing his hair or packing her backpack. • Shoot the details. How about a shot of the clothing laid out the night before, the lunch bags lined up on the counter or a stack of new school supplies on the counter ready to be packed? • Start a tradition. Pick one idea–perhaps a photo of your child holding a sign with the date, grade, and teacher’s name–and repeat it every year. What a great gift a book of all of those photos will be when your child is starting college! • Consider including parents and siblings in a photo or two. We talked Cherry, our cover children’s mother into playing along for a few of our photos. For the photo on page 44, we asked the boys to act embarrassed and mom to act happy and the result is a fun, cute shot. PEGGY FARREN is the owner of Avant Garde Photography and Understand Photograhy. High School’s Final Year 11 Ways to Support Your College-Bound Child

R

eady or not, prepared or not, when summer is over, your child is set to begin the final, defining and transitory, senior year of high school. Whether this is your first or third child, each collegebound high school student walks a unique path. Here are 11 ways you can support your college-bound child:

1.

Talk it over. You have been listening to your child’s dreams all through her childhood. You are her first advisor. Now is the time to reflect the intimate knowledge that you have gained over these precious and fleeting years. What are his talents? What is she passionate about? What will she always want to be a part of her life? What does he want to contribute? Making time for conversation and real dialogue with your child is crucial to helping her to focus her aspirations on a possible program of study. Never underestimate what is possible.

2.

Brainstorm a big list. The first list of colleges and universities should include a wide spectrum of choices from which to ultimately choose. Some of these choices should provide a stretch that challenges your child to reach further. Encourage your child to attend college presentations that are offered at the high school. Explore university websites together and separately. Your child will let you know when your presence over his or her shoulder is no longer required. You can compare notes later.

3.

Consider campus size. What size of campus will appeal the most? As my daughter, Natalie, and I learned, actually visiting the campus was the best way to get a feeling for size. On our visits, we observed the kind of people who were walking around campus. How did the large campus feel? Or, would she prefer a smaller 40

neafamily.com

August 2015.indd 40

campus? Our tour guides made impressions on us. One professor stood out. He made Natalie feel welcome when she sat in on his class and remembered her name when he saw her the next day.

4.

Discuss distance from home. How far away is your child comfortable living? Some students are fine going to the opposite side of the country while others prefer to stay close to home, where weekend visits are possible or perhaps even to live at home that first year. My son, Thomas, demonstrated his independent nature by his choice to study a good sixhour drive away at the opposite end of our home state.

5.

Apply, apply, and apply. Early in the senior year is time to tackle the tedious work of completing college admissions applications as well as scholarship applications. This load will be lightened considerably if, as Nova suggests, the student has used the summer of junior to

senior year to research scholarships and to draft samples of scholarship and admissions essays. Sarah Myers McGinty’s book, “The College Application Essay” by College Board is an excellent reference to use as a guide for those intimidating essays.

6.

Make that essay shine. Parents, siblings, and friends can help with the editing process. In most cases, the final admissions or scholarship application is uploaded online. Take the time, however, to print out the various pieces and refine the wording. If ever there were a time for perfectionism, the time is when writing college and scholarship applications. Proofreading by multiple sets of eyes can add exponential value. Print hard copies of all the applications and keep them in a large accordion style file or file box. The file box will be full if not bursting by the end of the year.

7.

Support without hovering. Your child needs your support during this process. Most students this age need help NEAPOLITANfamily • August 2015

breaking down the projects and requirements into manageable bits. They need help managing deadlines and timelines. Brooke Nova, who specializes in college and career counseling, suggests parents start tracking all community service once students enter ninth grade.

Register Now for Our Amazing After-School Program!

8.

Attend financial aid presentations. Many high schools have at least one night, usually in the fall, to invite someone from a local University Financial Aid Office to speak about financial aid. In his presentations, Mike Johnson, Director of Financial Aid for Pacific University, likes to go beyond the basic information. “I also try to provide a reality check on what costs really mean.” Johnson helps parents to consider how much the tuition “sticker price” can be alleviated by factoring in the potential for financial aid in their situation. It is helpful to attend more than one of these presentations. I attended a multitude of them. Attend at least one with a friend, better yet; a friend who has already sent a child to college if this is your first. A second ear can help with sorting through the information overload. I found it nearly impossible to assimilate all the information, terminology, and financial acronyms, in one sitting. Allow time to make sense of it all in order to be able to apply the information to your individual situation.

9.

Get a jump on senioritis. Senioritis seems to hit all of them. It’s just a matter of how far into the year it takes to kick in. Brooke Nova encourages students to finish most everything, “(applications to college, scholarships, and FAFSA), should be done by winter break.” After the first semester seniors are typically “’over high school’ so getting everything done before break really does help,” she concludes.

10.

Wait it out. Even after all of this preparation, there is nothing to do but hang in there with your child and wait for the letters of acceptance or rejection to arrive in the mail. If your child was taking some risks in the application process, there are bound to be disappointments as well as victories. Each letter brings opportunity for feedback and learning for both of you. You will likely celebrate one day and then receive sobering news the next. Be prepared for tears. Remind your child that the closing of one door; opens another.

11.

Accept the roller coaster. During my daughter’s senior year, sometimes she accepted gentle reminders, other times, she bristled at any suggestions. As a parent, I was continually walking that tight rope between supporting and hovering. I felt the stress of meeting the application deadlines right along with her. Even so, I couldn’t write her essay for her. I was almost grateful when she shut her bedroom door in my face so she could work on it on her own. Later, when she took the envelope into her room to open privately in her own space, I held my breath, too. But the results were hers, not mine. Whatever the news, ceremonies that mark the end of high school for your child are rich with meaning and memories. You will have endured the ups and downs of a unique and remarkable senior year with your child. The events and memories of senior year will stay with both of you as you take the next step to life beyond the high school years together. NEAPOLITANfamily • August 2015

TEAM

Sports

Parents are busy in August shopping for back to school wardrobes, lunch boxes and binders, it is also the right time to plan for extra-curricular activities for the upcoming school year. Participating in a team sport is an excellent way for children and teens to get the 60 minutes of daily physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control. In addition to the physical benefits of decreasing the risk for obesity, diabetes and heart disease, participating in sports has psychological and social benefits as well.

WHEN CHOOSING A SPORT, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: 1. Does my child want lessons in a sport or to participate in competition? 2. Does my child want a year-round sport or one that is offered during a limited season? 3. Is a travel club team appropriate for our family schedule or do I prefer all games to be played locally? 4. How much does participating in the sport cost? (Equipment, fees and travel) 5. How many practices and games per week are my child expected to attend?
