THIS MONTH: Back to School

Most evenings I walk on the beach for an hour or so either alone or with a friend. It’s great exercise, it gets me outdoors and I enjoy the beautiful Naples sunset. I’ve always noticed the turtle stakes and signs but hadn’t given it much thought beyond wondering when the eggs hatched and the turtles went into the gulf. On a warm night in August I was at Wiggins Pass a little later than usual. The sky was that beautiful dusty blue that you see when the sun has almost gotten to the horizon and I was walking back along the beach to my car. Something caught my eye on the sand and I stopped, thinking at first that it was a crab scurrying along. My eyes adjusted to the light and I realized that sea turtle hatchlings were leaving a nest and heading to the water. I stood as still as a statue, shocked. I finally regained my sense enough to pull out my phone and start my camera rolling to capture one hatchling as he made his way to the water. I was mesmerized by nature unfolding in front of me and watched as 10-12 hatchlings left their nest and all safely made it to the water. If you’ve never been lucky enough to see turtles hatching, head to our website at neafamily.com to see the video. It really is amazing to watch! You’ll also want to read the article on pages 12-13 for information on the loggerhead and do’s and don’ts if you encounter hatchlings on the beach. Most of this issue is devoted to the arts. We recognize how very important art, dance, music and theatre is in the development of well rounded children and we’re lucky to have a lot of excellent organizations and businesses offering classes for children locally. Check out our list on pages 42-43 for suggestions. Anna Futrell talked with 5 young Naples dancers who are all interested in making dance their career. Her profiles appear on pages 38-40. These dedicated young women are an inspiration as they work toward their future plans. If mom and dad are interested in getting creative, might we suggest pottery? It’s a rewarding hobby that is also incredibly relaxing. See our article on pages 44-45 for more information and then check out the side bar for suggestions on where you can get lessons locally. Have a wonderful–and artistic!–September.

The Marching Sharks of Gulf Coast High School Prep for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

T

his year the Marching Sharks are prepping for their biggest performance ever, the 2015 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. “This is definitely a once in a lifetime experience,” says Justin Goff, band director for the Gulf Coast High Sharks. Following a two-year selection process, the Gulf Coast High School Band was picked to march in the famed parade. They are the sixth high school band to ever be selected from Florida and the first from Collier County to be selected. I caught up with the group during band camp to experience their excitement firsthand. “I’m super excited. I want it to be November already,” says Cameron Feliciano, a senior clarinet player. While everyone is excited, there are plenty of things to be nervous about. “It is such a long walk and you are there for so long, you start to get tired,” explains Cameron. The parade route is two and a half miles long. The group also has to learn to be versatile with their performance. They are used to performing on the football field during halftime, but they will have to adjust for their parade performance. Band director Justin Goff tells me they’ve ordered a tarp the size

of Herald Square in order to practice that transition. Then there’s the weather. “I hope the weather prevails. Last year in Chicago it was cold every day up until parade day, then it warmed up the day of the parade,” says Austin Horton, a senior trombone player. Last year the Sharks performed in Chicago’s Christmas parade. These amazing trips and experiences truly showcase why it is important for kids to get involved in activities outside of academics in school. How cool will it be for these kids to one day tell their kids they marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?!? Throughout Collier County Public Schools (CCPS), there are so many programs for students to get engaged in, especially in the fine arts. I encourage parents to check out our Fine Arts Department home page (www.collierschools.com/ finearts) on our district website. There you will find information on the many different music and visual arts opportunities for students. Take a moment to explore these programs and what they offer with your child. While the trip to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is unique, I promise many of the other experiences your child will have in these programs will be just as awesome. I

can vividly remember the many places I got to visit while taking part in my high school’s choir program many years ago. On a final note, make sure to tune in and support the Marching Sharks on Thursday, November 26th at 9:00 a.m. We are certainly proud of them and we are looking forward to seeing them perform! Support the Sharks!

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

By Erika Donalds

July/August School Board Meeting Update

S

omeone once described to me the difference between the superintendent’s job and the school board’s job by saying, “the superintendent prepares for the next school year; the school board plans for the next decade.” While our teachers, students, and families were getting rejuvenated during summer break, the board continued to make governance and policy decisions to prepare for your district’s ongoing success. The most important responsibility of the school board is to hire the superintendent and to supervise his or her job performance. Every June, the board does an evaluation of the superintendent and approves their goals for the coming year. This past school year’s evaluation (2014-2015) was based on goals that were approved in June 2014 (before my election to the board). The results reflected that Superintendent Kamela Patton met nearly all of her stated goals, which included full implementation of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in all schools, a college trip for seventh graders, and professional development for early learning (pre-kindergarten) teachers. Most goals related to K-12 assessment scores were removed from the 2014-2015 evaluation, because it was the first year of a new statewide exam, the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). As we look forward to 2015-2016, the superintendent’s stated goals include promoting a Young Author’s Night in elementary schools, expanding career Academies in our high schools, and growing the district’s annual STEM (science, technol-

The superintendent’s stated goals for 2015-2016 include promoting a Young Author’s Night in elementary schools, expanding career Academies in our high schools, and growing the district’s annual STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) conference. ogy, engineering, and mathematics) conference. I chose to vote against the new goals, because I believe they are not adequately measurable and do not reflect a focus on academic achievement of our students. It can be argued (and was the position of other board members) that all of these activities contribute to student achievement. You can read my detailed memo on this topic at erikadonalds.com/evaluation, and send me what you believe should be included in the superintendent’s annual goals at donale@ collierschools.com. In July, your board discussed the topic of our relationship with the district’s general counsel. Florida law allows for each county school board to hire an attorney who works directly for the board. Collier County School Board’s attorney currently works under the superintendent; therefore, his evaluation and retention decisions are made by Dr. Patton. In the case of a conflict of interest, the board must hire outside counsel. A motion was made by school board member Kelly Lichter to change the attorney’s contract so that he would work directly for the board, and if any matters

of conflict should arise, the superintendent would be represented by outside counsel. The board majority voted against these changes in favor of the current structure (Mrs. Lichter and I dissented). Finally, in August, the school board approved the district’s legislative platform, which will be used by our lobbyists and legislative representatives to advocate for changes in state laws. Of note to parents and teachers is our position to create a local teacher evaluation system, which would be approved by the state. Currently, we must use the State of Florida’s Value Added Model (VAM) in our teachers’ evaluations to reflect student performance. VAM is a calculation that compares actual student test scores to ‘predicted’ student test scores. Unfortunately, VAM has earned the ire of teachers and local administrations for not being timely or reliable. In addition, the district is asking for the ability to choose alternative assessments (such as national norm-referenced tests like the SAT or Iowa Basic Exam), including paper versions of these tests, to use for accountability purposes. Additionally, parents feel that using a variety of tests could break up the “teaching to the test” that has become inherent with the Florida exams. Your school board continues to address a variety of topics each month, all of which affect your students, and ultimately, their futures! Please feel free to reach out to let us know your thoughts on any of these items, or others you’d like to see addressed. Your feedback is welcome and appreciated.

SWFL NATURE

By Andrea Breznay

Tracking the Loggerhead

I

’ve lived in Naples for more than 17 years so I’ve certainly read and heard about loggerhead turtles. I’ve also seen the protected nests on area beaches during my daily beach walks. But it wasn’t until I came upon a group of hatchlings leaving their nest in early August that I truly understood the miracle their survival requires. Loggerheads are local There are five species of sea turtles found in Florida waters and all of them are protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 and the Florida Marine Turtle Protection Act (379.2431 Florida Statues). Loggerheads are the predominant species of sea turtles in Collier County. The official start of Sea Turtle Nesting season on our beaches is May 1. The female 12

neafamily.com

turtle crawls to a dry part of the beach and digs a body pit using her rear flippers as shovels. When the turtle has finished digging, she begins to lay eggs. The average size of a clutch ranges from about 80 to 120 eggs. Once she has laid her eggs, she conceals them with sand. After the nest is thoroughly hidden, the female crawls back to the sea to rest before nesting again later that season. Once a female has left her nest, she never returns to tend it. Nesting occurs from May through August when the hatchlings begin to appear. Hatching may extend through October. Incubation takes about 60 days. Each hatchling breaks open its own shell and then digs its way out of the sand. The tiny turtles usually erupt as a group, and gener-

ally remain near the surface of the nest until the temperature cools, indicating nighttime. The hatchlings use the natural light horizon over the Gulf of Mexico to reach the water when they emerge from the nest. Any other light sources such as street lights, or light from cars, condos, or campfires can lead hatchlings in the wrong direction. If the hatchlings don’t make it to the water quickly, death by dehydration or by predators like crabs or birds is a real possibility. Once in the water, they encounter many obstacles including sharks and other large fish as well as plastic garbage and tar balls introduced to the water by humans. The obstacles are so numerous that only about 1 in 1,000 survives to adulthood. Locally, Conservancy of Southwest Florida Senior Biologist, Dave Addison NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2015

and a crew of interns monitor nests at the Naples City Beach and on Keewaydin Island. Conservancy scientists use cages or stakes over the nests to protect the eggs from common predators like fire ants, crabs, raccoons, and feral hogs. If you see these cages on area beaches, please do not disturb. Protect the Nest! In order to protect our beloved sea turtles, we must protect their homes. Here’s how you can help. • Turn off lights at beaches during nesting season • Don’t touch the animals • Clean up our beaches (turtles will eat and can choke on litter) • Use reusable bags instead of plastic bags • Support fisheries that use turtle-safe devices on their nets • Slow down in designated channel zones. • If you see hatchlings leaving their nest, give them room and do not interfere with their journey. It’s essential not to use flash photography around the hatchlings. Stay behind the hatchlings so they can not see you or be disturbed.

Fun Facts: • Loggerheads are a protected species. They only nest in two main areas of the world. One is Florida beaches (mostly Southwest Florida). The other is off the coast of Oman in the Middle East. • The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has been protecting sea turtles for more than 32 years. Scientists have saved more than 265,000 babies. • Reproductive Age: 17 - 33 years old • Adult Size: 35 - 84 inches • Adult Weight: 180 - 440 pounds • Nesting: Loggerheads lay 3-4 egg clutches (groups of eggs) about every 1217 days every 2-3 years. • Average eggs per clutch: 112.4 • Gestation: 80 days *Figures are based on the average adult loggerhead.

The Dalton Discovery Center is home to Betsy, their ambassador loggerhead. She was part of a gender study and will live in the patch reef aquarium until she is large enough to be safely released into the Gulf. Learn more about Betsy and her namesake, long-time sea turtle advocate Besty Sandstrom at www.conservancy. org/baby-loggerhead-sea-turtlenamed-betsy.

Making Memories When a Grandparent’s Home Isn’t Home Preparing your children to visit a grandparent in a nursing home.

B

ringing kids to visit a grandparent or great grandparent in a nursing home is an extra special time, but can also be extra tricky. You want to spend some quality time together, but you’re also on the spot, parenting unpredictable small children. How do you avoid meltdowns and stress, and enjoy you visit? How can you prepare your children for sights, the sounds, and even the smells they may encounter? If you prepare your children for what to expect, bring the right supplies, and stay flexible, you’ll be able to create treasured times for everyone to remember. Packing the Right Supplies Make sure you bring snacks, photos, and keep your camera ready to take pictures. Bring a special snack that your kids only get to have when they are visiting. Your child will look forward to the special treat and you won’t have to leave the room to search for a vending machine. You can also bring old pictures of Grandma and ask questions

or record her telling stories from her past. If she isn’t able to move or speak very well, you can get a close-up picture of your child’s hand clasped in hers. Capture the spontaneous moments when your children try to help Grandma and pictures of hugs and kisses. When you camera is already in your hand ready to go, it’s easy to capture these tender moments. Making Gifts, Keeping Busy Give your children something fun to do that they can give to Grandpa. While they are busy working, you have time to chat and catch up. Put a special craft kit or coloring book and crayons in a bag used just for these visits. Younger children may want to bring action figures or dolls to play with underneath Grandpa’s walker. Your children can answer questions about school and how much they’ve grown while they work on their projects. They can also make pictures for other residents in the nursing home. Shannon Stabbert, a mom who has volun-

teered in a nursing home says that when kids gave out pictures to other residents, it was the highlight of their week and kept the kids busy during the visit. Finding Fido Some nursing homes have pets to comfort residents and provide a home-like atmosphere. If your children get antsy during the visit, they can go on a hunt around the home for the resident cat or dog. Ask the staff about the pet’s name and if they are used to kids. Saying hello to a pet as part of each visit can provide an extra incentive for your child to come with you. You can schedule your visit when a therapy dog is making its rounds to the residents. Keep your camera handy because when a pet is in the room, it’s a great time to get a relaxed and happy picture with Grandma. You can ask her about pets she had as a girl and in her life. Funny stories of pets are something that you can all laugh about together. Be Prepared for Anything Sometimes a visit can be tense. Grandpa may look or sound different, or even scary. Other sights or noises in the home may seem unfamiliar. Judy Patenaude, mom of two, explained to her kids that even when people in the home look or sound scary, they can still wave to them and brighten their day. Your children may seem extra fussy or unmanageable toward the end of your visit because they’re worried about Grandpa, and may be tired of being on their best behavior. Be patient and take time to talk with your child about their experiences with simple, positive language. Celebrate Your Visit and Be Open to Difficult Questions After your visit, it’s a good idea to have a simple and fun family tradition. You can go out for a hot chocolate, ice cream, or

make a special treat at home. It ends the visit on a happy note and the kids will look forward to the special treat. Listen to your child’s questions about the visit and be patient with yourself when trying to answer difficult questions about life, death, and aging. You aren’t expected to have all the answers to these questions and when you are at a loss for words, you can wonder together. Let your children know that you love them and that visiting their grandparent is a special way to show you care. Ali Van Camp, a mom of three, visited her grandmother in a nursing home with her kids over many years. She reflects, “My kids knew what to expect - that Yia Yia couldn’t talk or walk and might not even look at us, but we could still talk to her and touch, hug, or kiss her if we wanted. They also knew that the other residents were happy to see them and it was OK to say hello and answer questions like their name and age.” Your children are comforting others with their little voices, laugh, and play and are an important part of caring for a community. RUTH HANLEY is a mom to two girls, who were strength and a delight to their grandfather, a resident in a nursing home for two years. Ruth is thankful to have pictures to remember and share the special moments from that sensitive time. Celebrating Grandparent’s Day National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of the elderly in nursing homes. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Here are three suggestions on how your family can celebrate Grandparent’s Day this year: 1. Plan an activity or trip. The number one thing most grandparents want from their grandchildren (and children!) is time. Plan a fun trip or special activity with your children to do with their grandparent. Find something special that both will enjoy and that offers lots of time to just be together and chat. 2. Interview Grandparents. For older grandchildren, suggest they interview their grandparents. It’s fascinating for children to hear about the differences in everything from technology to education to clothing. You can use video or a tape recorder or the kids can simply sit and listen to stories. You could also have the kids write out what they learned and put it together with photos for an interesting family record. 3. Create a family tree. Borrow photo albums from your parents or grandparents and make copies of several generations of relatives. Your children can sit with their grandparents jotting names, dates and notes about each of the relatives and then pasting them into a family tree. Make copies for everyone to keep. 4. Cook together. Have the whole family cook a few of grandma’s favorite recipes together. Grandma will enjoy supervising and teaching! NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2015

Teaching Children Household Responsibility

A

ccording to H. Stephen Glenn and Jane Nelsen in Raising Self-Reliant Children in a Self-Indulgent World, “A belief in one’s personal capabilities is an essential building block for successful adulthood.” The best way for children to achieve this sense of capability is to be assigned household responsibilities. Offering children opportunities makes them feel essential to the family unit and teaches basic skills, acceptance of responsibility, and self-discipline. Reward Whether to compensate and reward children for their work is a difficult question, and conflicting opinions held by child specialists don’t help. Experiencing selfsatisfaction from work is important. Yet even adults receive compensation for their work and then reward themselves in many ways, from mini shopping sprees and eating out to buying recreational toys and taking vacations. So your best bet is to take a middle-of-the-road approach. Assign your child some responsibilities without reward, such as cleaning his room and taking care of personal belongings. But offer an allowance or rewards for additional tasks. Children learn valuable lessons from earning as well. They learn to handle money and come to understand that hard work pays off, just as it does in the adult world. Whether your child receives a reward for a particular task or not, always praise the efforts. This helps to reinforce the intrinsic value of completing a task. When selecting prizes, choose something your child wouldn’t receive otherwise. If you go to the park several times a week, an extra trip to the park won’t seem much of a reward. But if you normally go only once a week, an extra visit will be more enticing. For toddlers and preschoolers, immediate rewards are important. Offer to go to the ice cream store or park, to play

a favorite game together, to invite a friend over, or a fun sticker or favorite treat. You can also purchase prizes that come in a set, such as markers. Then offer one piece of the set for each completed task until your child has earned the complete set. Elementary children are able to save for bigger rewards. Use a chart and offer prizes for accumulated stars. But don’t make your child wait more than a week or so for a reward. Otherwise, the reward will lose its motivational value. Rewards for elementary age children might include additional television or computer time, a trip to the zoo or museum, baking together, having a friend overnight, or a new magazine or matchbox car. Older kids are able to accumulate points for longer periods and begin to look toward long-term rewards. A teen could accumulate points for several weeks to earn a concert ticket or trip to the amusement park, a new outfit, or a special privilege such as staying out later or additional phone time.

your elementary age child can fix her breakfast, help pack lunches, clean off the dinner table, load the dishwasher, wash windows and clean bathroom sinks. Kids in middle school and beyond can learn nearly any task. During the teen years, introduce new tasks periodically so your adolescent can master all skills. Your teen can organize the garage, basement, and closets, fix dinner, do laundry and ironing and do minor household repairs. It’s not too late If your child is beyond preschool or elementary age and you haven’t offered many household responsibilities in the past, don’t despair. While it’s better to start when children are young, it will be more difficult, but it’s not too late. Make a plan today to set your child on a path toward self-reliance. You’ll both be glad you did as you watch your child reap the benefits of growing into an independent, successful young adult.

Age appropriate chores Toddlers and preschoolers are more capable than we realize. In these early years, children should take on household tasks. Remember that attention span is short at this age, so keep chores brief when assigning them to little ones unless the chores are especially fun. Your preschooler can help with simple chores like setting the table, emptying wastebaskets, dusting, sorting dirty clothes and picking up toys. Elementary age children are more coordinated and capable of performing better quality work. In addition to the previous items,

Natural Ways to Boost Your Child’s Immune System

W

ith the flu and cold season right around the corner, try simple, natural strategies to help keep your child healthy and strong. These tips can also help the body fight illness more efficiently.

Eat from the rainbow. During cold and flu season, it’s especially important to avoid non-nourishing foods which can aggravate symptoms and make it harder for the immune system to respond to illness. “Good nutrition is essential to a strong immune system and it can offer seasonal protection from illnesses, as well as other health problems like allergies,” says registered dietitian Joan Sechrist, PhD, Optima Health & Sentara Healthcare. Vaccinate. Stay current on your child’s immunizations. “Immunizations in younger years can help prevent disease as kids grow into adults,” Sechrist says. Get adequate sleep. Kids need between eight to 12 hours of sleep a night to help keep their bodies strong. Stick to a regular, calming evening routine. Also, power down distracting electronic devices that can interrupt sleep. Exercise regularly. Active kids are healthier kids. Experts recommend that kids get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Take family walks or bike rides, shoot hoops, swim at your local community center, go roller or ice skating, play hopscotch or toss a ball in the backyard. Teach proper hand-washing. Basic hand-washing with soap and water prevents the spread of disease. Have your child lather for 20 seconds or say the ABCs twice. Avoid overuse of sanitizers, which destroys both good and bad bacteria on the hands. Take probiotics. “Probiotics are fabulous in and of themselves for gut integrity,” says naturopathic physician Shelly Clevidence. “For increasing the immune system, they don’t have to be live.” Look for probiotics in pill form or in foods. If your child is sick, avoid dairy products, which contribute to inflammation and mucus build-up.

Try castor oil. Extruded from the castor bean plant, castor oil can be rubbed on your child’s belly at night when the immune system is most active, says Leah Hollon, a naturopathic physician. Castor oil, she says, is both anti-cancer and an anti-inflammatory. “Castor oil is pretty amazing. We find it helps bring more white blood cells into the blood stream to help fight infection,” Hollon says. “It also helps get that histamine response down for some kids that have allergies, and it helps them have a good bowel movement.” Constipation issues can be worse during flu and cold season. Consider elderberry syrup. Both Clevidence and Hollon say elderberry syrup (also available in a tincture) can help kids fight a cold or flu. “Elderberry syrup is one of my favorites,” Hollon says. “My kids love the taste of it. Probiotic, elderberry syrup is antibacterial and antiviral, a general broad spectrum support.” Elderberry has been used for centuries to treat wounds and respiratory illnesses and is thought to reduce swelling in the mucous membranes and sinuses. *Consult with your pediatrician before treating your youngster with elderberry. Power up with Omega-3s. A recent study published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggest that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil and plant sources, like flax seeds, chia seeds, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower, could also help boost immune function. Most of all, role model healthy living and your child is likely to follow suit--naturally. Try to integrate these vitamins and nutrients into your family’s diet: • Protein boosts the body’s defense system (lean meats, beans, nuts, eggs, soy products and seeds). • Vitamin A helps keep the skin, respiratory system and tissues in your mouth, stomach and intestines healthy (sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, and apricots). • Vitamin C stimulates the formation of antibodies that fight infection (citrus fruits, red bell pepper, papaya and tomato juice). • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the body (sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower/safflower oils, and spinach). • Zinc is a nutrient that helps wounds heal and keeps the immune system working properly (lean meats, poultry, seafood, milk, whole grain products, beans and nuts). oin a park ranger for a reading of A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle, a wonderful story with a positive message. Hermit Crab has outgrown his first shell, and, as hermit crabs do, he must look for a new house. Nervous and a little frightened, the crab plucks up his courage and finds a shell that’s big enough for him. The only problem is that it’s very bare. That’s where his fellow undersea creatures come in: a sea anemone offers to decorate the outside, a starfish the inside; an industrious sea snail, a fortress-protecting sea urchin, and an illuminating lantern fish move in as well. The story will be followed by a fun environmentally friendly craft created with a park ranger. After the program, participants can begin their journey to become a Florida State Park Junior Ranger through fun self-led activities. This program is appropriate for children ages 4-12. Bring a book to donate to a local library or show your library card to have your admission fee waived for this special event. Pre-registration for this event is required, spaces are limited. P

ursuing a career as a professional dancer takes years of intensity, focus, and hard work. These five Naples students dream of becoming professional dancers and instructors. We spoke with them to see how they are working towards their goals, navigating challenges, and reaching for success.

THE STUDENTS JADE KESSLER, age 10 and a student at Dance Arts by Maria, dances as much as possible around the community and is involved on a competitive dance team. She adores her dance teachers and their role in her desire to pursue dance as a career. “The teachers inspire me to be the best dancer I can be,” she says. Dance performances make Jade happy; this joy in competition has helped Jade commit to her dream of becoming a professional dancer. “My teacher asked me to perform a solo for this year’s competition, along with a duet for another performance! I am learning so much now and I feel well-prepared. I would like to go to a school of performing arts someday.” CAROLINE BUCKHEIT is 14 years old, trains at Backstage Dance Academy, and dances 20 hours per week. She also is involved with Gulfshore Ballet. Caroline says she is most comfortable when she is on stage performing. “I’m a quiet person by nature, but when I step on stage, it’s like I am in a different world.” Why, exactly, does Caroline desire to make a career out of dance? “It’s just something I’m so passionate about – I know I want it.” At age 14, Caroline is well on her way to becoming a professional dancer. “I plan to join Boston Ballet’s pre-professional program in January of 2016. The path to professional dance begins in a pre-professional program, moves to a trainee program, and then to a hiring process with a company. Most often, it is necessary that you commit to this path by the age of 15.” Caroline’s path has been balanced, organized, and filled with sacrifices that remind her of her strong commitment to her passion. SKYLAR FRY, age 13 and a student at Backstage Dance, has a passion for wordless expression through dance. “I love dance because I am able to express myself by moving instead of relying on words.” Skylar willingly makes sacrifices because of her love for her fellow dancers. “I have so much fun dancing with my teammates. We work hard, laugh together, and build amazing memories along the way.” Her passion for mastering ballet has inspired her to work hard as well. To achieve her dream of becoming a professional dancer, Skylar’s mantra is “to work hard through every class. I dance six days a week and take advantage of every opportunity at my dance studio. I realize that it is important to be challenged and learn from many different people, and I hope to attend more summer dance intensives around the country that will offer dance opportunities in a professional environment.” AUBREY JANE PORTER is 13 years old and dances at Dance Arts JADE KESSLER NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2015

by Maria. She recalls the moment she first started: “I knew I loved dance when I was three years old and put on my first pair of ballet shoes. I started twirling and thought I could fly.” Aubrey loves to be on stage bringing joy to an audience, but she is also open to pursuing a career in dance as an instructor. “I love helping little ones learn to dance,” Skylar states. “My mom says I’m a kid magnet. I love seeing how excited they get.” Aubrey works hard throughout the year on her dance. “Mrs. Maria [owner of Dance Arts by Maria] is supportive of our dreams. She finds intensives and workshops for us to participate in throughout the year and over the summer.” To achieve her dream of becoming a professional dancer, Aubrey takes care of her body. “Eating healthy is very important. I also joined my cross country team at Gulf View Middle School last year to help with my leg strength and stamina.” Aubrey plans to attend college and major in dance and minor in education. ERIKA MOGELVANG is 11 years old and has been dancing since age three at Dance Arts by Maria. “The studio has supportive teachers who help you grow,” Erika notes. She loves the excitement of dance, and as she enters seventh grade, she is looking forward to pursuing a career passing on this excitement to other dance students. Erika is pursuing those dreams by taking as many classes in various dance styles as possible and continuing to compete. “I am seeking to improve my technique and turns. I work hard as a competitive dancer. Each time I take the stage, I am a little less nervous. I just purchased my first pair of pointe shoes, so I look forward to studying that form of dance too!” THE DELICATE BALANCE All five of these Naples area dance students seek a delicate balance between their priorities – and all list dance and school at the top of their lists. Skylar Fry notes that, “time management is key in this balance, and I limit social time and avoid procrastination.” Erika Mogelvang always looks ahead. “Usually,” she says, “I do homework during school or in the car. I really only have one free day a week, so I am always thinking about upcoming assignments.” With very limited free time, it can be easy to get discouraged, but every one of

these five dancers pointed to their unwavering commitment to dance. Jade Kessler has committed herself fully to the study of dance: “I had soccer, gymnastics and piano, but now I am concentrating on dance alone – taking performance technique, ballet, tap, and jazz for competition.” Each one expressed appreciation for their teachers and family members as well. Aubrey Porter states: “My parents always said school has to come first if I want to further my dance career. It takes a lot of organization. My parents really keep me on track and make sure I’m getting my work done.” These dance students also expressed gratitude for supportive friends. “I have a lot of great friends who understand that I don’t do sleepovers and sometimes miss birthday parties because I have dance,” Caroline Buckheit says, “And I think that my success so far has been because I have found friends, a school, and studios that support me. They all understand my commitment.” ONE TEACHER’S ADVICE How much determination does it take to become a professional dancer? Ashley McLean, a dance teacher at Dance Arts by Maria, provides some helpful advice to young, aspiring dance students. “Know that this road is going to be hard. Even though you are an amazing dancer, you cannot expect to get every job for which you audition. Choreographers are looking for a certain look and style, and it is easy to get discouraged. I tell my students to be humble, and stay positive.” For students seeking to be dance instructors in the future, Ashley encourages her students to remain up-to-date regarding trends and developments. “Being a dance instructor is a way to pass on the knowledge you have learned. I advise students aspiring to teach dance to continue to learn new things in order to keep your own students progressing.” There are a variety of paths to a career in dance: working on Broadway or other theater shows, dancing on cruise ships or at amusement parks, or teaching dance are all ways to create a career out of a passion. It will be interesting to watch Jade, Caroline, Skylar, Aubrey and Erika as they work towards the goal of making a career out of their dance passion! NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2015

THE ARTS

By Andrea Breznay

Mom and Dad: Creativity isn’t just for your kids!

Try Your Hand at Pottery T

he beginning of the school year is a great time for kids to start a new activity or sport. It’s also the perfect time for mom and dad to exercise their creative muscles with a new hobby. If you’ve been considering trying an artsrelated activity–why not give pottery a go? In addition to those pretty and functional pieces you’ll have to decorate your home or give as gifts, creative hobbies could keep your brain sharp as you age. A study by the Mayo Clinic found that engaging in a creative hobby helped reduce the risk of dementia and preserve memory in middle age participants. A new creative hobby is a great way to model lifelong learning to your children. It’s also a wonderful stress release. Bending over a pottery wheel while you mold a lump of clay into something recognizable is a form of meditation that really can quiet the mind.

Donna Torrance has been a pottery teacher for 35 years including 23 years teaching adult education in Collier County. Torrance now teaches at Clay More Ceramics and the Naples Art association at the Von Liebig center. Her advice for pottery newbies is simple: “Seek out a center or studio to get some lessons and then, like anything else, practice.” Throwing pottery is a fun but challenging hobby that gets you down and dirty. It looks easy and even a little sexy (you’ve seen “Ghost,” right?) but the reality is that it’s more complex and requires lots of practice to perfect. Your pieces will be lopsided and a little rough but that’s part of the fun. As you practice you’ll improve, but for many potters, creating the perfect piece isn’t the point–it really is about the process. You should take classes to make any headway with wheelthrown pottery. Once you have the basics down, it’s all about repetition and practice. The process itself is simple: create a bowl or other shape on the wheel, cut if off the base, trim it after it is leather hard, let it dry thoroughly and then it is fired. Once it is bisque fired, you glaze and then fire again. After the second firing, you’re done. There are several types of clay and glazes–the merits of each will be explained by your teacher–but in general, most beginners start with earthenware because it’s a little more rugged and the glazing process is relatively simple. You can also create hand-built pots and other shapes using pinching, coiling, and slab techniques. Various textures can be stamped into the clay to create the designs and shapes. You also can combine the two forms by adding hand built parts to a thrown piece. However you choose to get started in pottery, my advice is to start! It’s fun, relaxing and sparks your creative spirit. The following organizations and businesses offer pottery classes in the Naples and Bonita Springs area: Art League of Bonita Springs Wheel, hand building, sculpture classes and workshops for adults and children. Also offers open studio time. 26100 Old 41 Road, Bonita Springs www.naplesart.org 239-495-8989 Claymore Ceramics Hand building and wheel classes as well as open studio time. 1750 J & C Blvd., Naples claymoreceramics.com 239-821-0750 Collier County Adult School Hand building and wheel classes held at Barron Collier High School.
