I spend WAY too much time doing online research, especially this time of year, and usually when I should be sleeping. Gifts, hotels, cars -- it doesn’t matter what it is, there are countless opinions on every little thing for sale, and I’m tired of wading through it all, not knowing which reviews to trust. We figured that you all are tired, too, so we wanted to help. On page 22, we feature 12 of the top toys of the year as selected by the National Parenting Product Awards, for babies up to middle-school-aged kids (and even one for teachers!). At the other end of the expense spectrum, Keith Turner, The Car Guy, offers his picks for the top automobiles for families, as well as options for giving your current ride an upgrade. The holidays are all about spending time with family and friends, and to that end, we’ve given you a special holiday event pull-out section on pages 24-25. It’s our usual center calendar, but this month it features only Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year-related events. We’ve also given you a list of the best spots to view the holiday lights and find Santa on page 44. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from Neapolitan Family and our mascot, Marcel!

Collier Deputies Learn More About Autism
I
f your child or someone you know has autism, you’ve learned that these individuals respond to new people and places in largely different ways. Have you ever wondered how your child might fare during a conversation with a deputy, firefighter, or medic if you weren’t there to facilitate? “Autism doesn’t have the physical indicators other conditions do,” said Sgt. Dan McDonald of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, who trains deputies on how to recognize signs of autism. “Kids with autism may have an aversion to bright lights, loud sounds, and groups of people they are unfamiliar with, and that can be a stressful situation for them.” Those with autism might not respond to commands or questions and may have difficulty expressing themselves. They might not make eye contact and could be extremely adverse to touch. In October, special legislation went into effect in Florida that will improve the way law enforcement interacts with children and adults with autism. House Bill 39 requires that all law enforcement officers in the state receive specialized training related to autism through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Sgt. McDonald took part in the curriculum workshop for this training, which is now being field tested by Florida Department of Law Enforcement before it can be widely used throughout the state. Sgt. McDonald is confident that the new legislation will continue to improve the skillsets deputies have when it comes to interacting with various individuals in the community. “I think it’s a win-win to the benefit and safety of the community,” he said. “It’s going to help first responders and families here in Collier County.” Collier County deputies are ahead of the curve in receiving special training for their interactions with those with autism through the Crisis Intervention Team training program. Sheriff Kevin
Rambosk wants 100 percent of deputies to complete the training, which began in 2008 and teaches deputies how to interact with individuals who may show signs of mental illness, autism, or other developmental disabilities. The 40-hour training program is offered four times a year and has been proven to reduce injuries and death to police and individuals with mental illness or other diagnoses. So far, about 500 deputies have received the training. “We teach recognition and response to autism,” said Sgt. McDonald. If a deputy encounters someone with autism at the scene of a traffic crash, for example, deputies learn to recognize signs that indicate an individual might have autism through their actions, limited communications, or behavior. If that’s the case, Sgt. McDonald said deputies are trained to give an individual more personal space, to use simple language, and allow extra time for a response. Here are a few things you can do now if your child has autism: 1. Register your child in the C.A.R.E. database by contacting Supervisor Angela Larson of the Victim & Senior Advocacy Unit at 239-252-0232, or by email at Angela.Larson@colliersheriff.org. This database tells deputies about your child’s physical appearance, tendencies, triggers, and preferences and can help locate him or her in an emergency. 2. Have your child outfitted with a Project Lifesaver bracelet, which will monitor his or her location if prone to wandering. 3. Get a free autism sticker for your vehicle. Place this sticker on the window where your child usually sits. The sticker lets first responders know that someone in the vehicle has autism and might be nonverbal. Contact Sgt. McDonald at 239-252-0921, or by email at Daniel.McDonald@colliersheriff.org, with questions or to request a window sticker.

FAMILY LAW
By Dale Klaus and Reuben Doupé
Parenting Coordinators can Assist With Co-Parenting
T
he vast majority of divorced parents get along splendidly and can cooperate in the raising of their children, or at least reach a non-confrontational middle-ground. For some, however, getting along can be a challenge. It takes two people to be respectful to one another, but it takes only one person to cause a conflict. Sometimes the conflict is justified and the product of differing opinions or feelings on important issues, but other times it is fueled by reactive emotions or hurt feelings. The court system is simply not designed to efficiently help parties that cannot get along or agree on how to co-parent their children. As a result, a few years ago, the Florida legislature codified law regarding Parent Coordinators. The purpose of a Parent Coordinator is to facilitate dispute resolution between parents by educating and making recommendations. A Parent Coordinator must be a mental health professional, a licensed physician, or a lawyer. Most parent coordinators in Collier County are mental health professionals. A Parent Coordinator also must complete a mandated training course. The court must appoint someone to the role of a Parent Coordinator, either by the agreement of the parties or upon motion and a hearing. The Parent Coordinator does not represent either parent; rather they are a
neutral third party. This allows them to speak directly to both parents when they are involved in trying to resolve a dispute. The court may also give them the right to speak to the children, if necessary, to assist the parents in working out an issue. Most often, the parents already have a Parenting Plan in place, and the Parent Coordinator is specifically tasked with assisting them carry out the terms in the Parenting Plan and resolving any complications or difficulties that arise. Further, all communications with the Parent Coordinator are confidential. In our experience, the success of parent coordination depends highly on the willingness of the parents. If everyone buys-in and accepts the advice, information, and counsel of the parent coordinator with the goal toward solving the problems and avoiding future conflict, then the process of parent coordination can be very successful.
Happy Holidays! NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2017
These types of parents will likely find that their need for use of the Parent Coordinator will lessen over time and eventually end. Of course, at the other end of the spectrum are those that refuse to buy-in to the system. There certainly will be some extremely high conflict cases that cannot improve even with the best efforts of the best Parent Coordinator. Study after study has shown that children will be negatively affected by continued and constant conflict between their parents after a divorce. A Parent Coordinator is one more potential tool for reducing conflict, and therefore improves the lives of both parents and children.

PME Students are Telling Their Stories
W
hen Alec Folz evacuated Naples in the days leading up to Hurricane Irma, he was unsure what he’d return to. “It looked like a war zone,” he said of the pictures his dad sent them from Naples. “It wasn’t like anything I’d seen before.” The Pelican Marsh Elementary (PME) fifth grader described Atlanta at the time as bright and sunny – a stark contrast to the darkness he saw in pictures and on the news the day of the hurricane. “I remember coming home and seeing the debris, sewage in our lake, the flooding,” he said. Folz and his classmates turned their hurricane experiences into something unique – a collection of stories called The Day the Trees Laid Down. This book is a collection of stories sharing the survival and perseverance of students in Julie Bolock and Segal White’s fifth grade classes in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. “I was grateful that my school and my friends were all okay,” said fellow PME fifth grader Reese Schmidt. “I don’t think Naples will ever be the same. Trees were uprooted, sidewalks destroyed.” In addition to the book, students performed a short play about the hurricane. It detailed their experiences, peppering in some humor and the lessons they learned. “When we came back to school, I was excited about the book and the performance. This way I know I’m going to remember what I went through in the hurricane forever,” said Schmidt. “Every kid had a different experience. Some stayed here, some evacuated,” said Alec’s mom Deena Folz. “I know it was hard for the kids. It’s great that they could come back to school and tell their story.” She said she felt it was important for them to learn how to make the most out of a bad situation. “These kids spent time with their families and made memories,” Deena Folz said. “They volunteered at school, making bagged lunches for fellow students who weren’t as fortunate. I think they’ve learned some great life lessons that will help them as they get older. It helped the class and the school come together and really support each other more” Bolock said they wanted a way for students to be able to reflect
on what happened during the hurricane. “We wanted to get students back on track after a stressful 12 days,” Bolock explained. “We thought of a book.” “We didn’t know what the students had gone through,” White added. “We thought that maybe they had some stories to tell and could heal through writing.” With all the ideas going around, both teachers agreed that a performance could encompass the shared experience. “They all had a story to tell and they wanted to tell them. Now that it’s in written form, they’ll have it forever,” Bolock said. “They exceeded our expectations.”

HOLIDAY COOKING
By Anna Futrell
Family Holiday Recipes You Never Knew You Needed
Many families make the same recipes year after year during the holiday season. We are pleased to share some of those recipes with you, courtesy of local families. Some recipes are traditional to the holiday, and some are uniquely traditional to the family sharing them. These recipes are tried and true. They are relatively simple, not overwhelming, and used as a part of each family’s traditional holiday preparations. We hope you enjoy! Futrell Family Bukda (Bohemian Coffee Cake) This first recipe is from my own family. My paternal grandmother, affectionately known as “Yoyo,” made dozens of loaves each year as gifts for family and friends. When I asked my aunt, Angie Rose, for the recipe, she told me it came from a woman named Mrs. Svec. My Yoyo’s mom, Gram, was a home nurse for Mrs. Svec’s mom in Chicago in the early 1900s. After her shift one day, Gram watched Mrs. Svec make bukda and mimicked the recipe. (There was no written recipe.) Though referred to as a coffee cake, bukda is more of a cinnamon sugar-laced bread. 2 cups milk 1 ⁄3 cup butter ¼ cup sugar 1 egg 1 ⁄3 teaspoon nutmeg Flour to make a soft dough (about 4 cups total, including enough flour for surfaces) 1 package of yeast mixed with ¼ cup warm water Additional 1⁄3 cup butter, ¼ cup sugar and 1-2 teaspoons cinnamon
Scald the milk. Add sugar and butter. Let cool. Slightly beat the eggs with a fork in a separate bowl. Add a little flour (1 cup) to the milk mixture. Beat by hand. Add the beaten eggs. Add ½ -1 cup more flour, along with the nutmeg. Then, add the yeast mixture. Add additional flour – enough to make a soft dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead until elastic. Let the dough rise in a lightly greased bowl or pan until it doubles in size (about 1 hour). Divide the dough into two parts and roll out each part. Brush melted butter onto the rolled out dough and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Roll the dough up (like a jelly roll) and let them rise in loaf pans until they double in size (about 1 hour). Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown (about 20 minutes). Remove from the pans immediately. 16

Latkes Stacy Nicolau, co-publisher of Neapolitan Family, makes latkes with her family each year at Hanukkah. This traditional recipe is courtesy of the Epicurious website and submitted by Rhoda Boone. However, Nicolau adds some insider information. “I have a secret that speeds everything up (but don’t tell my mother). I substitute an equal weight of potatoes with the bags of pre-shredded potatoes. There’s less liquid and no shredded knuckles or messy food processors. They are typically meant for making hash browns. Make sure to purchase the plain style without onions, peppers, etc.” 4 pounds unpeeled russed potatoes (or 4 pounds shredded hash browns) 1 pound yellow onions ¼ cup matzo meal 2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 large eggs, lightly beaten ¼-½ cup (or more) vegetable oil ¼ (or more) schmaltz (rendered chicken fat; optional) Applesauce, for serving Sour cream, for serving
Preheat oven to 250°F. Set racks in upper and lower thirds of oven. Place wire cooling racks in the rimmed baking sheets and place in the oven. Using a food processor with a grating insert, grate the potatoes and then the onions, transferring grated vegetables to a large bowl when the bowl of the food processor is filled. Alternately, use a box grater. Working in batches, place the potatoes and onions in a clean dishtowel and thoroughly wring out the excess liquid over the sink, then transfer the potato-onion mixture to a large bowl. The more liquid you remove, the crispier your latkes will be. Reserve the potato-onion mixture. (If you are using
prepared shredded potatoes, simply mix them with shredded onions.) In another large bowl, whisk together the matzo meal, salt, and pepper. Add the eggs and whisk to combine. Add the potato-onion mixture and mix well. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt equal parts schmaltz and oil (or oil only if omitting the schmaltz) until a ¼-inch depth of fat is reached. Drop 2 tablespoons of latke mixture into the hot fat, spacing them 2 inches apart. Flatten latkes slightly using a spatula and cook, turning once, until crisp, golden brown, and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer latkes to wire racks and season with salt; return to the oven to keep warm. As you remove latkes from the pan, replace them with fresh spoonfuls of potato mixture to maintain oil temperature. Add additional schmaltz and/or oil around the edge of the pan as needed to maintain a ¼-inch depth of fat. Keep latkes warm in oven and serve hot with applesauce or sour cream. the early 1950s, the recipe originated with her friend, who won a contest with the pie. The original recipe called for slivered almonds on top. 3 tablespoons water 1 cup chocolate chips ½ pint of whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 graham cracker crust pie shell
Chocolate Pie The Lytle family has made a very simple chocolate pie for their Christmas celebration each year since the 1950s. According to Vivian Lytle, a Naples resident since
Melt chocolate, vanilla, and water over low heat. Mixture should still be lumpy when you remove it from the heat. Let mixture cool. Whip cream until stiff peaks form. Fold into chocolate mixture. Place in pie shell. Keep refrigerated.
Hoppin’ John Vivian Lytle also shared this traditional southern New Year’s dish with me. It was passed on to her from a pilot she and her husband knew in Hong Kong in the late 1940s. 1 ½ cups dried black-eyed peas 6 strips bacon, diced 1 medium onion, chopped ½ teaspoon salt ¾ cup long-grain white rice 2 tablespoons olive oil (optional) Salt and pepper to taste Dash of hot sauce ½ cup minced green onions 3 tablespoons minced parsley
Rinse peas well; cover with 3 cups of cold water and let stand overnight. Drain the peas, discard the water, and place in a large pot. In a separate pan, saute bacon until crisp and add it to the peas, reserving the drippings. Add onion, ½ teaspoon salt, and 2 cups water. Bring just to a boil, lower heat, and simmer until peas are tender, about 30
minutes. (A small amount of cooking liquid should remain; if liquid is absorbed too quickly during cooking, add more water ¼ cup at a time.) Cover rice with cold water. Bring to a boil, stir once, cover, simmer for 20 minutes over a low heat. When peas are tender, add cooked rice to pot. Stir in 2 tablespoons reserved bacon drippings (or olive oil, if preferred), salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste. Cover and simmer about 15 minutes longer. To serve, garnish with green onions and parsley.

Cooking spray 35-40 saltine crackers 2 sticks butter 1 cup light brown sugar 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips (Optional 1 cup sliced or chopped almonds)
2¾ cup flour 2½ t baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 2 ⁄3 cup shortening 2¾ cup brown sugar 4 eggs 1 cup nuts and/or raisins 12 ounces chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line 1 large or 2 small jelly-roll pans with aluminum foil, and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the saltines salt-side down in a single layer. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Boil it until it turns a caramel color (a few minutes). Remove from the heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly. (Don’t worry too much if the crackers get offkilter a bit.) Put the jelly-roll pan into the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until just bubbly, watching carefully. Remove from the oven, and pour the chocolate chips over the crackers. (Optional: top with almonds.) When the chips melt a bit, spread them over the crackers with a knife carefully. Transfer the pan to the freezer for 15-20 minutes. They will form one big sheet. Break up into pieces. Store in an airtight container.
Melt shortening and add in brown sugar. Allow mixture to cool. Add eggs, one at a time. Mix in the dry ingredients, and then add nuts and chocolate chips. Spread the mixture into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Bake 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees. Cut while still warm.
Have a lovely holiday season, and enjoy all the traditional baking and cooking this month! Step outside your cooking comfort zone, but don’t get too crazy. Keep it simple for yourself. Have a lovely, joy-filled December, and a happy new year!

MOMentum Moms
Photographs by Lisette Morales manda Jaron was sitting in traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel on the way home to New Jersey when she decided she wanted to move back to Florida to raise her family. She had a flashback to 9/11 and the impossible journey home from New York City, and thought, she could not bear to be that far from her twins Willem and Alanna in another time of crisis. After working in New York City for 10 years as a jewelry designer for brands such as Givenchy and Tommy Hilfiger, and ultimately as senior designer for Avon’s jewelry and watch division, Amanda and her husband Stephen began their search to find a new place to call home. After exploring several locations on the east coast and also Clearwater where she grew up, they decided on Naples.

A lifelong artist, Amanda reinvented her jewelry career by selling her own line on the Home Shopping Network and found immediate success. Selling large volumes of her jewelry made her feel disconnected with her clients, so she decided to focus on building relationships with local clientele and creating custom pieces for them. She opened A Jaron Fine Jewelry in North Naples and recently relocated her studio to the Bayshore Arts District on Bayshore Drive. As if life wasn’t busy enough with twins and a full time career, Amanda has managed to use her craft to benefit the community her family lives in. As a proud product of Pinellas County Public Schools, she felt compelled to volunteer for Champions for Learning, in order to give back to her children’s public school district. She eventually landed the commission to create (and donate) the coveted gold and diamond apple pendants for the annual Golden Apple awards recipients. She also has dedicated jewelry lines that give a percentage of sales back to PACE Center for Girls and the Neighborhood Health Clinic, as well as pieces for fundraising auctions. In 2013, she launched The GLITTER Foundation, Inc., her own charity to help fund arts education and art therapy for organizations such as the David Lawrence Center. Her dream is to have The GLITTER Bus, which would be a mobile arts lab that could travel to underserved areas. While Amanda says “everything looks better in gold,” she prides herself in being able to create jewelry from a variety of metals and materials so that there is something in her collection for everyone. What is your style of jewelry making? I find so much of my inspiration comes from my clients. Jewelry is so personal. My signature “Bling-Overs” (custom redesign of a client’s old jewelry) are my favorite. Celebrity clients? Sharon Stone and Kathy Ireland. How do you balance being a mom and wife with your professional and volunteer obligations? Balancing ... for me is involving my family in the process. For example, my daughter has learned how to interact with people, dress up, sit through a presentation, and talk with adults, all while learning that the world is made up of people who are both more and less fortunate than us. What is a typical week night like NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2017
for your family? Boring! We are running around doing after school activities, then home to do homework. What does your family like to do for fun? We like to go boating and spend a lot of time on the water. It is the one place where we are not connected with our “devices” and we can take the time to smell the salty air. Typical date night for you and your husband? My husband and I have been together 25 years. We love to eat in new restaurants. I am a vegetarian, so for my husband, any place he can get a good steak. Favorite restaurant to go to as a family? Pelican Bend on Isle of Capri. The Old Florida outdoor deck is the best for fresh fish, sunsets, and live music. Best parenting advice you ever received and from whom? A family friend once told me, “Don’t let the kids change your life, teach the kids how to be a part of your life.” Describe life raising twins. Everything times two! In some ways, having twins is easier. In the beginning, it is harder for sure. For most of their growing up, we did the same things at the same time. They just move into the next stage together. Boy/girl twins – what else could a working mother ask for? I am truly blessed. Best and worst part about their current age? My twins are almost 14 and in their last year of middle school. The best: they still want their mommy. The worst: I know that next year in high school my birdies will be starting to fly.
Proudest moment? For Alanna, it was when she won first place and people’s choice in an art show. This show had nothing to do with me. She did it all on her own; she was a winner. For my son, he is just an all-around good kid. He is my voice of reason. On his golf team, he was given the title, “Always Willing Will”! I know he will be there for me when I am old and gray – or old and violet! Biggest regret? Running in stilettos for over a decade in NYC. What will Christmas be like for your family this year? This year we are flying on Christmas day to New York City. I am excited to show the kids the city they were born in. I know they are hoping to see a little snow! neafamily.com

ESTATE PLANNING
By Norell Albanis
Why Inheriting in a Trust is a Must
O
ne of the most prevalent misconceptions when it comes to estate planning is that if you have a will, it will take care of everything that needs to happen after you die in terms of your assets. But before you leave everything to just a will, consider these circumstances where a will simply doesn’t work: Avoiding court. To take effect, a will must go through the probate process (called a conservatorship during your lifetime), which can be lengthy and deny your heirs (or family while you are living, but incapacitated) a quick resolution to the distribution of your estate (or the ability to pay your bills while you are living). This is particularly true if you own property in another state. Protecting privacy. Once a will is open to probate, it is open to everyone – meaning that anyone can get access to it and learn everything you owned and where it is going. Wills also can contain personal information that is attractive to identity thieves. Protecting you in case of incapacity. Since a will only goes into effect upon death, it provides zero protection for you if you should become incapacitated and no longer able to handle your own financial affairs or make decisions about your health care. If that were the case, your family would have to go through the stress and expense of petitioning the court to appoint a guardian or conservator to handle your affairs. This is costly and can even drain your entire estate. This can be avoided by having advance
medical directives and a financial power of attorney drawn as part of your estate plan. Protect your assets. Passing assets to heirs via a will does not provide any protection for those assets. Once they are distributed, they may become vulnerable to a divorce action, creditors, or bad financial decisions by your beneficiaries. Placing your assets in a trust gives you more control over how and when they are distributed, and can protect them from creditors and judgments. Does the phrase “trust fund” conjure up images of stately mansions and party yachts? A trust fund – or trust – is actually a great estate planning tool for many people with a wide range of incomes who want to accomplish a specific purpose with their money. It is true that many Americans of means have trusts to protect and pass their wealth, but there are a number of reasons why trusts can also be useful for middle-class families. 1. Control distribution of assets. You wouldn’t hand over your car keys to a child who has had no proper preparation for driving, and chances are you would not want to hand over all your assets to a teenager either. But if both parents die at the same time, the children would inherit all the assets upon their 18th birthdays. A trust allows you to specify how and when you want your children to inherit. 2. Protect assets from creditors. Placing an inheritance in a trust ensures that those assets are protected from your heir’s – or their spouse’s – creditors. Consider a
Lifetime Asset Protection Trust. 3. Protect inheritance from spendthrift heirs. Not everyone is good with money. If your heirs fall into that category, you can use a trust to ensure the assets are not frittered away due to spendthrift behavior. 4. Protect inheritance for children of prior marriage. You can use a trust to both provide for your current spouse and any children from a previous marriage. 5. Provide for a special needs heir. Leaving assets outright to an heir with special needs could disqualify them from receiving government benefits. Leaving those assets in trust bypasses this potential risk. 6. Avoid probate. Assets can pass to heirs without going through probate by using a trust, saving beneficiaries the time and expense of the probate process. Probate is an expensive, public, and unnecessary court process you can avoid. 7. Protect privacy. Once a will is entered into probate, it becomes public; a trust is a private document that will protect your family’s privacy. ASK THE OUTNUMBERED MOTHER
M
By Amy Hunter
Remembering My Father
y father died three months ago. I don’t really have it in me to dole out advice right now, so I’d like to share some thoughts about him here. My dad was the least judgemental person I’ve ever met in my entire life. Upon meeting someone, he brought no preconceived notions, no baggage of class, or race, or status. He opened his heart, his mind, and usually his table to any and everyone he came in contact with. My father did not do side-eye. He didn’t throw shade. He did not judge. My dad was a healer. He was a peacemaker. He was the person you could go to when you needed informed perspective. In my 40 years on this Earth, he never led me wrong. It’s been three months since my dad passed. As I was trying to pinpoint all the things about him that made him unique, I recalled all the well wishes and outpouring of love coming through the phone, the internet, the snail mail, and everyone else who mourned him. That’s when it occurred to me that this circle of love was more diverse than a 1980s video attempting to end world hunger. Dad loved and was loved by anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. And I’ve never been more proud to be his daughter. I miss you, Dad. It’s like a heartbeat. That sentence echoes in my brain every morning as I brush my teeth (I miss you, Dad). Those words are a silent refrain as I watch your grandchildren climb walls (I miss you, Dad), when those same grandchildren drive Rob and me crazy (I miss you, Dad),
and then they ride bikes (I miss you, Dad), when they make new friends (I miss you, Dad). It rings in my ears as I go about my day (I miss you, Dad). When I find deals at the store, you would’ve called me about, “Wow, this is 25% off!” (I miss you, Dad). When I hear something hilarious, and I know you would’ve loved that joke, too (I miss you, Dad). When I realize Robbie will become a Bar Mitzvah this year and you won’t be on the Bema (I miss you, Dad). I really miss you, Dad. As a human being, I’ve tried to avoid pain at all costs. I don’t think that makes me unusual or distinctive. I think that makes me pretty basic. Who wants to hurt? No one. As a parent, I’ve tried my best to shield my children from undue pain because I’m a control freak, and helplessness is just as painful. Twelve years ago, when I was in labor with Robbie, I got my epidural as early as possible, because pain. At one point, my parents were sitting with Rob and me at my bedside, and I started to feel incredible, unimaginable pain. It seems my epidural, artfully placed by the intern, had fallen out. Rob and I didn’t know how to handle it. This was not in my birth plan, and my father and mother started reminiscing above me as I was losing my ever-loving mind, about the night that I was born. My mom, whom I’ve decided is a Viking, Amazon, ninja, and Jedi warrior in her own right, went Lamaze all the way (of course she did), and my Daddy said, “Remember when you were hurting, and we
sang together, remember what we sang?” It was that exact moment that the contraction to end all contractions hit me head on and my parents chose that exact moment to relive the glory days of my birth with songs from A Chorus Line. “Kiss today goodbye, the sweetness and the sorrow, wish me luck the same to you, and I won’t forget, what I did for love, what I did for love.” Breaking into song was something my father did a lot. I learned a great lesson that rainy night in May. Firstly, I learned my parents were bonkers, but I’d already known that. The real lesson I learned is that pain is inevitable. Pain is part of the human experience. You. Cannot. Stop. Pain. But what you can control is how you choose to handle it. So, tonight, and every night, I will feel the pain of the loss of my father, Robert Block, but I will remember the joy he brought to the world, and I will rejoice that we all were able to be a part of it. TRAVEL
By Karen T. Bartlett
Destination: La Antigua Us: “Dear kids, this year we’re ditching the commercialism and giving useful gifts. You’re getting one nice educational present.” Them: “Great. Thanks (not).” Us: “It’s a Spanish lesson.” Them: “You’re the meanest parents in the world.” Us: “By the way, the class is in an ancient city in Guatemala, called La Antigua (which means “the ancient”). Your desk is outside by a castle wall. Tests? Only if you want them! Oh, and did we mention the field trips? There’s a chocolate plantation, Mayan ruins, a black sand beach and even a live volcano where we can ride horses to the top.” Them: “You’re the coolest parents on the planet.”
S
ixteenth century conquistadors built the city as Spain’s Central American capital with opulent palaces, cathedrals, and walled estates, dwarfed by three cone-shaped volcanoes. El Arco, the stucco arch spanning the cobblestoned main street, provided nuns’ passage between the cathedral and their convent. When an earthquake destroyed the town two centuries later, the Spaniards rebuilt an exact replica 25 miles north. The abandoned city became La Antigua. After the nobles departed, homesteaders settled among the ruins. Quirky makeshift homes and tiny shops still sandwiched between crumbling walls are part of Antigua’s immense charm. Gnarled vines and twisted tree-trunks snake their way between the ancient stones. Flowers spill over the walls of secret gardens. Farmers milk their goats in grassy medians, selling warm milk in paper cups; musicians play in the plaza; women and children display their

brilliant-hued blankets and baskets beneath El Arco. Imagine the perfect spring: blue skies, warm days, cool nights, and low humidity. That’s La Antigua, year-round. The town is packed with great restaurants, mostly modestly priced. Salsa dance lessons are fun and inexpensive. No English allowed Because Antigua is among the few places in the world where the Spanish is pure, uncorrupted by dialects and slang, the biggest industry is language tourism. Families, college kids, diplomats, military officers – even world leaders – stroll through town with their personal teachers, practicing total immersion by ordering from menus, mailing postcards, buying produce, and window shopping. The locals are patient and encouraging. College-age Sarah and I went together for different reasons: she to get certified as bilingual for career purposes; I for motherdaughter bonding and an amazing travel experience. She chose top-ranked PLFM (Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín), the one that offers an optional U.S. Foreign Service style language proficiency exam. We chose a no-frills homestay with shared toilet facilities. I recommend a more comfy option, or Airbnb. Or, for sheer luxury: an adorable historic inn like El Convento (elconventoantigua.com) with private baths, stunning textiles, handcrafted furnishings, and thoughtful amenities. One week for a family of four (half-day classes, homestay with private bath and meals) is about $1,500. plfm-antigua.org. 800-552-2051. NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2017

Researchers are discovering that rather than concentrating on purely academic achievement, fostering attributes such as courage, resilience, and optimism in the minds of preschoolers lead to successful outcomes such as cultivating an attitude of positive thinking and appreciation of learning. This feeds confidence and self-esteem, so important to healthy development. Early education takes many forms. Certainly, we want to instill academic skills and present mindful challenges; however, the importance of concentrating on developing social skills should not be overlooked. Not only should they be emphasized, but they should be given paramount attention. If concepts are developed early, they become ingrained, providing individuals with tools to cope with difficulties that may occur along the way. Through social interaction and dramatic play, young students can be shown how to settle arguments, share and cooperate, develop empathy and self-control, be tolerant of others, be kind, problem solve, and become a team player. Children taught healthy means by which to cope gain confidence and independence. With these qualities instilled, they are more likely to become enthusiastic, self-assured, and trusting individuals, prone to a natural curiosity toward learning and genuine caring attitude toward others. By providing skilled, caring teachers who are trained in teaching essential life work skills, preschools today have the power to provide crucial means by which to cope during life’s difficulties. Let us not underestimate the importance that a preschool education can provide.

Parent-Worthy Picks for the Best Family Cars of 2017
The automotive industry today features a festive buffet of models featuring an impressive array of choices to help keep up with a family’s transportation needs during a busy holiday calendar. With all these choices in make, shape, price, and color, how is a parent to sort out the perfect ride for their growing clan? Here’s a look back at The Family Car’s top picks for 2017 from Keith Turner, The Car Guy. If a new car isn’t in your budget right now, turn to page 43 to check out the coolest accessories on the market.
Ford F-150
Trucks Ford F-150. There’s a truck in just about every family’s driveway – or in the driveway of a good friend – because at some point every parent needs one. That’s why the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in the nation. Featuring lighter, aluminum construction and a new V-6 turbo engine, the F-150 satisfies several parenting priorities: safe, capable, and economical. (MSRP: $27,110. MPG: 19 city/26 highway). Nissan Titan Pro. The Nissan Titan Pro is an aptly named truck featuring four-wheel drive, high viewpoint, and near-cavernous passenger seat – this truck is a beast. Safety features include a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area, lane changing alerts, and back-up sensors to help avoid fender benders. There’s even a pop-out step in the back corner to ease access to the truck bed. (MSRP: $43,290. MPG: 15 city/20 highway). SUVs Honda Pilot. A third-row capable of seating grown-ups comfortably is what makes the Honda Pilot the perfect SUV for families. Underfloor “cubby” storage areas help keep toys and valuables hidden from prying eyes. High-end extras include a panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel, and heated second-row seats. (MSRP: $30,745. MPG: 20 city/27 highway). Jeep Cherokee. Just the dynamic headlight design of the new Jeep Cherokee is enough to favor this rugged and feature-packed SUV. Featuring legendary Jeep 4X4 capability, the Cherokee handles roads like a pro and is loaded with family-friendly safety and comfort features. (MSRP: $23,695. MPG: 21 city/30 highway).
Honda Pilot
Mazda CX-5 40
neafamily.com
Crossovers Mazda CX-5. With a new, sporty, and stylish design, the Mazda CX-5 is more than just a pretty face. The mid-size crossover is loaded with parent-pleasing features, like a heated steering wheel, as well as heated front and second row seats, power liftgate, radar cruise control, and active windshield driving display. (MSRP: $22,890. MPG: 52 city/49 highway/50 combined). Ford Edge. Ford clearly is on the cutting “Edge” of safety and selfdriving technology with this crossover, which features high-tech systems for adaptive steering, cruise control for traffic jams, and active parking assist for parallel and perpendicular parking. Plus, you’ve got to love a model with color names such as Canyon Ridge, Blue Jeans, and Burgundy Velvet. (MSRP: $28,950. MPG: 21 city/29 highway). Minivans Chrysler Pacifica hybrid. This fantastic family hauler could easily top the hybrid list because it can run on electric-only power for up to 33 miles NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2017
per charge, easily enough to cover a parent’s carpool patrols. The Pacifica is packed with family-friendly features, such as a three-piece panoramic sunroof, and a powerful vacuum to keep cookie crumbs at bay. (MSRP: $28,995. MPG: 32 combined/ 84 mpg-e). Honda Odyssey. The 2018 edition of this popular maxi/minivan is loaded with family-friendly features that cater directly to a parent’s primary needs. The second-row seats slide together or apart to allow easy access to backseaters, or for separating the rowdy ones. There’s a special camera that keeps an eye on the kiddo, and an in-car public address system lets the driver talk to all passengers. (MSRP: $35,675. MPG: 16 city/25 highway/19 combined). Hybrid Kia Niro. There are many hybrids on the market to choose from, but this year’s launch of the Kia Niro Hybrid stands out for one reason: the big 50! The Niro crosses that magic threshold of averaging more than 50 miles per gallon combined in daily driving. It also doesn’t look like a hybrid and has plenty of power to back up that great mileage. (MSRP: $22,890. MPG: 52 city/49 highway/50 combined). Sedan Chrysler 300S. Chrysler’s flagship is the lone sedan among the vast desert of slowly evaporating models on the market for families. They are all great cars, but today’s active families tend to need more than four doors and a trunk. The 300S is stylish and safe, and offers a 360-degree view that keeps mistakes to a minimum. The V-8 HEMI has power and a fuel-saver mode. (MSRP: $35,675. MPG: 16 city/25 highway/19 combined).
