David Lawrence Center and Collier County Public Schools have been long-standing partners in ensuring the mental wellness of children in the classroom and beyond. This collaborative partnership is designed to improve student achievement by addressing mental health concerns. From strengthening awareness for teachers and parents so they are better equipped to address student mental health needs to developing new in-school services to manage specific student needs, this partnership is crucial to childhood wellness in today’s complex, high stress environment.

David Lawrence Center and the School District are committed to the health and happiness of our children. Together, we are identifying needs and ensuring appropriate access to services for early identification and intervention.
Dr. Kamela Patton, Superintendent CCPS
Mental Health is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. National studies indicate that two to four children in every American classroom struggle with a social emotional condition. Without treatment, grave consequences and challenges can develop. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community. A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

THIS MONTH:
Reading, St. Patrick’s Day, Spring Break and Easter: It’s a VERY Busy Month! Quick–name your five favorite books! Mine are “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith, “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck, “Just Kids” by Patti Smith, “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg, and “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. The first two have been on my list since I was a kid, the last three tend to rotate. I could compile a list of 100 and still have difficulty choosing because reading and books are so important to me. It’s a rare day for me that doesn’t end with a long, hot bath and a good book (and the occasional glass of Prosecco for good measure!). We’re celebrating National Reading Month with articles on boosting your child’s reading skills and book suggestions for new parents. One of the best ways to grow a reader is to be one, so don’t feel a minute of guilt for finding quiet time as often as possible to enjoy a good book! When my daughter was little, we’d sit side by side reading–we still share books and recommendations. In fact, when I buy a book I think she’ll enjoy, I buy a hard copy instead of the digital so I can send it to her when I finish. If you’re thinking about Spring Break, check out our article on Tampa on page 40-41 and the article about shelling on page 42. Even if you have just a day to get away, any one of the suggestions we have for Tampa will make a great day trip. And shelling is a fun activity we can enjoy any time! Finally, don’t forget about the “Education and Summer Camp Expo”which will be held on March 24 at the Greater Naples YMCA. Drop by between 4 and 8 pm to get all the information you need to choose a summer camp, preschool or after school activity. It’s all free! As of press time, there are still vendor booths available so if your business or organization would like to participate, call me at 514-0338 to grab one of the final spots.

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE
By Julie Sprague, Chairwoman, Collier County School Board
Please Keep Your Eyes On The Bus
I
t is a simple rule. If a school bus is stopped, its red lights are flashing and stop signs are out, and children are getting on or off, other cars must stop. Unfortunately, it is proving difficult for many drivers. Stop zone violations are the number one safety violation bus drivers see on a daily basis across the country. According to a 2015 Florida Department of Education one-day survey, 9800 bus drivers reported that 10,987 cars illegally passed while red lights were flashing or stop arms were out. That’s more than one infraction seen per bus driver just on that one day! Our CCPS bus drivers see it almost as much. Our 252 drivers reported 209 incidents on their oneday survey. That’s 75 percent of our driv-
In a recent survey of CCPS bus drivers, the 252 drivers reported 209 stop zone violations in just one day. That’s 75 percent of the drivers reporting an incident.
ers reporting an incident. The survey also found the most common illegal passing of a school bus occurs from the left side of the bus. That is obviously incredibly dangerous as kids are getting off and on the bus. These numbers have caught the attention of state lawmakers who are supporting bills in Tallahassee that would strengthen penalties for drivers who do not stop for school buses. The School Bus Stop Safety bills are Senate Bill 1570 and House Bill 1373 if you would like to read more about the proposed changes. We will have to wait and see if new legislation comes out this legislative session. The biggest takeaway of all of this is one simple question with a few different
answers. When do you have to stop and when is it ok not to stop? On a two-way street or highway, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a stopped school bus which is picking up or dropping off children. You must remain stopped until all children are clear of the roadway and the bus stop arm is withdrawn. If the highway is divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, you do not have to stop if you are moving in the opposite direction of the bus. Painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers. You must always stop if you are moving in the same direction as the bus and you must remain stopped until the bus stop arm is withdrawn. Bus drivers will tell you there are two reasons why this problem is getting worse. 1) Everyone is trying to get to their destination on time through increasing rush hour traffic; and 2) They are actually seeing people texting or surfing the web on their cellphones while driving. That distraction means, at times, drivers don’t even notice the big yellow school bus with flashing red lights. Trying to save a few minutes on the way to work certainly isn’t worth the lifetime of damage that could be caused in just seconds. Please give our bus drivers and our children a few extra minutes of your day for safety’s sake.

Barron Senior Working to Grant Wishes in Naples
E
veryone has a wish, right? Maybe you’d like to travel the world, win the lottery, or marry Brad Pitt. We all have wishes, but a student at Barron Collier High School would rather play fairy godmother and be the one granting a wish, not just any wish, but a wish for a local student in need. Barron Collier junior Mykala Fowler had an idea. She wanted to grant a local student a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She decided to create BCH t-shirts and sell them, in hopes that they’d raise $5,000 to grant a local student’s wish
Barron Collier junior Mykala Fowler is hoping to raise $5,000 for Make-A-Wish selling t-shirts.
and raise awareness for the organization. But her mission is also a personal one. When she was in fifth grade, Fowler was diagnosed with melanoma. “Going through the disease, I was lucky enough not to have the severity that some kids have to deal with, and I think it’s something to be able to take the stress for even a day off of the student or someone my age or younger.” “As parents, we’ve always tried to instill in our kids that we are extremely blessed and we need to give back to society as a whole,” says Mykala’s father, Bill. “When you see your kid take the initiative as opposed to us, it makes me very, very proud. We have four daughters and Mykala is the baby. I’m just so proud of her efforts.” With the help of her family and a teacher, Fowler found a sponsor, a local law firm, to underwrite the cost of 330 shirts, enough to reach her goal. She began to sell them for $20 at school with proceeds going toward the wish. When word got out, other organizations wanted to get involved. It quickly became a school-wide cause, not just a girl but an entire high school coming together to grant a wish for a local student. The National Honor Society began helping with t-shirt sales during lunch every day, with some sizes running out more quickly than they anticipated. The Key Club started their own
effort, selling bracelets for $2 to go toward the cause. “It’s incredible,” says Development Coordinator for Make-A-Wish Southwest Florida, Taylor Marini. “To see students coming together within a school to raise money to help other kids in the community is powerful.” Marini says local schools have been involved in Make-A-Wish before but never to this extent. “There are a lot of high school students who might be within the schools who are having wishes granted. It’s amazing that these students are raising money to help their peers receive wishes.” She says the money will go straight toward a local student so BCH will be able to follow the story of whoever’s wish is granted and continue to stay involved in the process. In their first week alone, the school raised $1,000, a number Fowler hopes will increase. They have all the shirts necessary to meet the goal, now they just need to sell them. Fowler says if they’re successful she thinks BCH could continue granting more wishes in the future. Until then, Fowler is thinking about their first wish and is anxious to see the end result. “Seeing a kid with their wish granted because of something our school was able to start, I think it would be incredible. It’s great that we were all able to come together and make this happen for someone, it’s empowering.”

NATIONAL READING MONTH
By Jan Pierce
Ten Tips for Boosting Your Child’s Reading Skills Does he know the letters of the alphabet and does she know the sounds they make? Can he recognize a few words such as his name, mom and dad, stop, go, etc.? Does she know how to write some letters on her own? If the answer is no to most of these, take some time to get ready for reading. And be sure the entire process is positive and enjoyable.
2.
Keep a reading/writing center in your home filled with supplies. You might include all kinds of paper, pens, markers, crayons, scissors, tape and glue, pipe cleaners, envelopes, stamps and stamp pads, etc. Children love to make their own books and write their own stories.
3.
B
ecoming a reader is one of the most exciting learning adventures your child will experience. Many children need little more than exposure to books and they’re off on their own. But others need guided support as they struggle with sounds, fluency and reading unfamiliar words. Reading is a complex process, but it’s vitally important to all learning. You’ll want to help your child build skills step by step and maintain a high degree of enthusiasm and confidence all along the way. When a child is overwhelmed by the CEDR 1003 NeaFamily 1-4 pg Horiz.4_Layout 1 pace of new vocabulary or the expectation
to “read faster” there is a higher likelihood of discouragement. Reading together regularly is the best way parents can help their children learn to read. Here are some tried and true methods to use when you read side by side with your young learner:
1.
First, be sure your child is ready to read. Have you read many and varied stories, poems, nursery rhymes and a variety of non-fiction books to him? Does she know how to hold a book, turn 2/18/13 9:45 AM Page 1 the pages, and follow from left to right?

Read favorite books over and over again. Stop and let your child fill in the words. Allow them to memorize the book and “read” it themselves. This kind of practice is confidence-building and sets the stage for independent reading.
4.
Once you’re working on early reading material, remember good readers use a variety of strategies to solve problems. As adults we do this without giving the process much thought. Here are some of the strategies we use when we come upon a new or difficult word. Your child should use these too. – We go back and reread to make sense. – We break the word into chunks and read the things he sees are not just remembered, they form a part of his soul.

the parts we already know. – We read past the word to see what might make sense in that place. – We read carefully all the way through the word, part by part. – We use picture clues and other prompts from the text. – We ask ourselves questions such as “Does that make sense?” “Would that work?” “Does that sound right?”

5.
Choose the right reading level for your child. Children need some books to practice on their own that are familiar and easy. They also need books at their “instructional level” which means books with a few challenges. When they are working on these more difficult books, you need to be with them asking questions, prompting with correct strategies and available to prevent reading frustrations. Allowing a wait time of 8-10 seconds before stepping in with a prompt gives the reader time to try some strategies on his or her own.
6. 7.
Avoid labeling your reader with words that compare. They’re on the road to reading and it’s not important if they’re learning as quickly as another person. Be sure the culture of your home is pro-reading. Use your local library to enrich your home with good reading material. Newspapers, magazines, baseball cards, maps, are all reading material too. Your children should see you reading for enjoyment and there should be read-aloud times every day. Family read-alouds with time for discussion are a wonderful incentive for young readers to work hard to become fluent themselves.
8.
Retelling a story out loud is a great way for children to gain the meaning of the story. They’ll become familiar with characters, settings and the action line with a beginning, middle and end.
9.

It’s a joy to watch children become fluent readers, but it can be a challenge to work daily with those children who struggle to learn. In most cases lots of practice at the appropriate reading levels will provide growth over time. You may want to write a few books about your own family members and make that the reading practice of the day. Familiar names, places and activities will make the story much more engaging. Your child will pick up on your enthusiasm for reading. Your reward? Happy successful learners. JAN PIERCE, M.ED., is a retired teacher and a reading specialist. NATIONAL READING MONTH
By Anna Futrell
Book Suggestions for New Parents Y es, this article will recommend a lot of books to read. No, you don’t need to feel pressured to read them if you are already overwhelmed! Naptime is for cleaning, prepping dinner, catching up on work and/or paying bills – not for seemingly superfluous activities like personal reading. However, as it is National Reading Month, I do have several parenting books to recommend to new moms, as well as a continued plea to my fellow new moms to read to their little ones.
For New Parents As a new parent, you shouldn’t necessarily feel pressured to read. However, there are various parenting books out there that WILL provide encouragement and support should you choose to pursue reading in your spare time. Maybe you have questions about a particular discipline or care issue. Turning to a published book provides a level of legitimacy and research, especially for new parents. Disclaimer: With just about any issue related to parenting, there are many opinions out there from an array of experts. This Naples parents recommend their favorite books! “We have fallen in love with the Pout Pout Fish books!” –Kristen, Naples mom of three
14
neafamily.com
reading list is by no means comprehensive, nor is it an endorsement for any given parenting method. • What to Expect the First Year by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel. It is easy to get entrenched in pregnancy and childbirth. The ins and outs of that entire process are all consuming, especially with your first baby. This book takes new parents through the first year, and it is a comprehensive guide to many of the things you will encounter as your baby develops. • Baby Bargains: Secrets to Saving by Denise Fields and Alan Fields. This guide is a helpful primer (make sure to buy the most updated version) on creative and practical ways to save money on baby products and gear. • Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours by Kevin Lehman. As you develop a system and philosophy of discipline as a parent, it is a good idea to start reading about the various methodologies that exist.
“For moms, I recommend Beyond Bath Time and Mom Enough: The Fearless Mother’s Heart and Hope. For babies and toddlers, I love Brown Bear Brown Bear, Pete the Cat, the Llama Llama books, and the Little Blue Truck books.” –Sharla, Naples mom of three
“Little Bitty Mousy is so fun to read and amazingly good at teaching the alphabet.” –Wes, Naples dad of two
Dr. Lehman writes about what he refers to as “reality discipline”. There are many popular books on discipline by experts in parenting, psychology, etc. This is merely one of the many available to parents. Be sure to research and read a number of books to begin to develop your own philosophy about how you will choose to raise your children and set up your home environment. • Disease-Proof Your Child: Feeding Kids Right by Joel Fuhrman. This is a book on nutrition gears towards family life and children of all ages. Fuhrman is a physician who wants to help families eat a nutrient-rich diet focused on chronic disease and illness prevention. It is a great guide that features scientific evidence and research-based methods which encourage parents to feed their children the right foods on a regular basis. It also provides various easy-to-make, kid-friendly recipes. • A book on sleep training. Select a book “My husband raps the rhymes in Sandra Boynton books. For parenting books, I recommend Bringing Up Bebe.” –Jillian, Bonita Springs mom of two
“I Love No Bad Kids: Toddler Discipline without Shame by Janet Lansbury.” –Amanda, Naples mom of one

on sleep training that fits with your instincts and desires as a new parent. Do some research online and talk with other moms. There are many books available on sleep, including The Happiest Baby on the Block, 12 Hours Sleep by 12 Weeks, On Becoming Baby Wise, and Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Read reviews, talk with your pediatrician, and select a book to read that resonates with your family. For Babies and Toddlers Research shows that reading aloud to even the smallest babies contributes to their growth and development, and to their understanding of language. National Reading Month gives us the opportunity to remind parents the importance of reading aloud and its direct correlation to literacy development. Perhaps most importantly, reading to your children promotes a stronger parent child bond and instills a love of literature in your children. Here’s a short reading list to get you started, all of which are available as board books: • Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef by Marianne Berkes and Jeanette Canyon. This book (and her other title, Over in the Jungle) has colorful hand-created clay images and beautifully flowing rhymes to keep babies and toddlers engaged and coming back for more. • But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton. All of Boynton’s books are popular with parents, and this title is no exception. Rhymes and hilarious hand-drawn illustrations create a memorable experience for your little one. • Each Peach Pear Plum by Allan Ahlberg and illustrations by Janet Ahlberg. Beautifully written and illustrated, this board book is a classic. • Gossie by Olivier Dunrea (part of the Gossie & Friends series). These fun books contain loveable animal characters with simple words and phrases. • The Little Finger Puppet Board Books. Created by ImageBooks, this series consists of very small, short board books with finger puppets embedded. Babies love them, and they get to learn about various animals as well! • The Cozy Classics series by Holman and Jack Wang. The authors have created beautiful felted scenes, each with a corresponding word, thereby condensing various pieces of classic literature, including Pride and Prejudice, Huckleberry Finn, and Great Expectations, among others. As a bonus, the authors have also created a Star Wars series based upon Episodes IV, V & VI. This series is a great way to introduce little ones to pieces of classic literature! • My First Mother Goose by Tomie dePaola. Beloved nursery rhymes in board book form with corresponding illustrations, this book is a fantastic piece of literature for babies and toddlers! Just keep reading! The best way to get your kids to love to read is to read to them as much as possible, starting at a young age. Start reading and keep reading. Select books you know your child will enjoy. As your baby reaches the 12-month milestone, you will begin to notice preferences for certain books, animals, foods, etc. Select books based upon these preferences, and continue reading even if your baby doesn’t show interest. The above selections are by no means comprehensive. There are SO many quality titles from which to choose. Enjoy celebrating National Reading Month together as a family! NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2016

11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass
M
arch 1st was my birthday and I turned 11! So I wanted to celebrate by doing a review of one of my favorite books, “11 Birthdays” by Wendy Mass. Amanda and Leo have been best friends ever since they were born, literally! They always had their birthday parties together, until Leo crushes Amanda’s heart at their 10th party. Just trying to be one of the cool guys. My favorite character is Leo because he is fun and kind! He decorates Amanda’s locker on her birthday. He and Amanda also have some good times together. My favorite scene is where Amanda is looking at a photo book with a picture of her and Leo for each birthday. I love it because of how it flashes back with each birthday, telling a little bit about it. I always enjoyed looking at photos from when I was younger. This is a book great for eight year olds and up. Girls AND boys can read it. This book is great for people who like reading about best friends, mysteries, and birthdays will love this book. I wanted to read more books by Wendy Mass after I read “The Candymakers” in fourth grade, as one of the Sunshine State Books. I was so happy to find out that she had written 19 books for kids! She has written the Space Taxi series, the Twice Upon a Time series, the Willow Falls series, and seven other books. “11 Birthdays” is the first book in the Willow Falls series. I liked reading “The Candymakers,” but I think “11 Birthdays” is a much better book. In “The Candymakers,” I got tired of reading about things that happened from four different people. It made the book very long and sometimes boring. Wendy Mass doesn’t do that in “11 Birthdays”, so it was more fun to read. You have probably figured out by now that I LOVE a book series. When I like an author, I want to keep reading books she or he has written, and it really makes me sad when I finish a series. But reading everything Wendy Mass has written will be a challenge, even though I don’t really want to read the Space Taxi series. If you read this book, it will be the best birthday present I’ve ever received! NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2016

HOLIDAYS
Celebrations explain the Trinity. Eventually Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts. It was American emigrants who transformed St. Patrick’s Day into a secular holiday and celebration. Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has coloured its river green to mark the holiday. Naples has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with an annual parade for over 40 years. A variety of other events are planned throughout March. It’s time to gather your green clothing and shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day fun! Annual Pub Trolley Crawl

arch 17, Saint Patrick’s Day, is the feast day of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Patrick was born in Britain in the late 4th century and taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping, he returned to convert the Irish to Christianity. Throughout his life, he established monasteries, churches, and schools. A variety of legends grew about him—that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to

T
eaching children a lifelong hobby, instilling appreciation for our marine environment and providing fun, family outings are the objectives for the Kids’ Fishing Clinic in Naples on March 12th. The Marine Industries Association of Collier County Foundation, along with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will offer a free Kids’ Fishing Clinic for children between the ages of 5 and 15 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Naples City Fishing Pier, 25 12th Ave. This free clinic enables young people to learn the basics of environmental stewardship, fishing ethics, angling skills and safety. In addition, environmental displays will offer participants a unique chance to experience Florida’s marine life firsthand. Fishing equipment and bait will be provided, but organizers encourage children who own fishing tackle to bring it. A limited number of rods and reels will be given away to participants. If conditions allow, participants will have the opportunity to practice their new skills and fish from the pier. This event is a photo catch-and-release activity, and an adult must accompany all participants. Individuals or companies interested in helping sponsor this event or volunteering at the clinic should call Tiffany Sawyer at 239-682-0900 or Email: director@miacc.org.

isitors to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida love the electric boats, gliding along the backwater estuary and into the Gordon River, with captains pointing out interesting local trees and animals. What many may not know is that the Conservancy also offers kayak tours guided by trained naturalists, with as many as 15 people going at a time, using single and tandem kayaks. The tour lasts two hours, and, as one guide told me, offers visitors an unparalleled glimpse into the watery world around the Conservancy. Paddling away from the launch area, the guide explains the unusual ecosystem found around the Conservancy. Here freshwater from the strong Florida rains mixes with saltwater to become brackish, while every few hours tides bring in an influx of saltier water from Naples Bay. They tell about the three types of mangroves, red, white and black, found along the shores and how they protect shorelines from erosion and the onslaught of tropical storms and hurricanes, and provide habitat for small fishes and crustaceans. Kayakers learn about the importance of clean water – fresh, brackish and salt - to southwest Florida, from Lake Okeechobee through the Everglades and out into the Gulf, and the Conservancy’s programs educating the community to beneficial natural resources stewardship. Wading birds such as ibis, herons and wood storks are spotted and identified, along with the occasional circling or nesting osprey, or perching eagle. The highlight of any tour, though, is the sighting of the unexpected or unusual – like the time five large manatees (Trichechus manatus) lazily swam into the midst of kayakers, following them along their trip, close enough so you could hear the animals’ occasional breaths. You don’t have to be from Northern climates to be in awe of these animals – and being so close you can hear them breathe is a memory that lasts a lifetime. Rare? Yes. But worth the chance encounter? Of course! The next time you visit the Conservancy, give yourself extra time to explore–but do it from the water, getting “down close and personal” to the wonders of nature. Book your kayak tour at the Conservancy Nature Center by calling 239-403-0304. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is located at 1495 Smith Preserve Way, Naples, Florida (just south of the Naples Zoo). See www.conservancy.org/nature-center for info.

HOLIDAYS
By Kerrie McLoughlin
Egg-citing EASTER TRADITIONS
E
aster was always an exciting holiday when I was growing up. I would spend the night with my grandparents the night before Easter, and I could SWEAR I heard the Easter bunny scooting across the floor in the night. Upon waking I’d bolt out of bed to see what candy and other treats I’d been brought, then we’d head to church for Easter services and a massive egg hunt. My day would end in a sugar coma on the couch, watching “The Wizard of Oz” with my parents.
melted chocolate chips, then they added sprinkles before the chocolate set.
Here are 8 ideas for Easter traditions you can try with your own kids.
2. Share the Fun. Kids enjoy sharing with others … and being sneaky! When dark hits the night before Easter, sneak over to a favorite neighbor (or drive to a close-by friend) and scatter eggs in their front yard. You can mix and match hard-boiled and plastic eggs. Fill plastic eggs with candy, coins, tattoos, stickers, erasers, etc. Even though doing an anonymous fun thing is great, these days you should probably leave a note or card on their door so they know it was you and not some crazy person putting stuff in their yard!
1. EasterTreats. There are so many great treats your family can make together a night or two before Easter. Decorating eggs is a classic, but you could also make something out of the ordinary like Jell-o eggs or eggshaped sugar cookies. Last year my husband and kids made Rice Krispy eggs dipped in
3. Pet a Bunny. Bunnies and chicks are the unofficial mascots of Easter, so find a place where your child can pet some! Depending on where you live, bunnies and chicks can be found at kid-friendly farms, pet stores and zoos. Some stores have promotional days where you can come in and pet and

hold these little sweeties and take pictures. And if you’re looking for a family pet, bunnies are a great option for an Easter gift to the family. 4. Easter Bunny Photos. Get your child’s picture taken with the Easter bunny. This is one I could kick myself for not doing yet, but it’s pretty simple. Just check the website of your local mall to find out if they’re hosting an Easter bunny event. Be ready to shell out a few bucks for a photo, or take plenty of your own. 5. Easter Basket Creativity. Easter baskets for the kids are a given, but they don’t have to be over-the-top. You can buy a simple empty basket at a craft store and fill it with things like pastel Peeps, toys, small books, plastic eggs filled with candy, etc. If you’re pressed for time and don’t know how you’ll be able to assemble an Easter basket, no matter how small, just buy one ready-made! You’re still an amazing parent, NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2016
and your kid won’t care or remember that it was store-bought. If you have time but are short on money, bake treats to put in the baskets, make a special card for your child or write out coupons for things like getting out of chores or an ice cream cone out with just Mom. Don’t forget about your older kids on Easter … everyone can appreciate an Easter basket! 6. Easter Egg Hunt. An Easter egg hunt can be held just about anywhere. My church doesn’t hold an Easter egg hunt, so we have one in my mom’s yard after church on Easter Sunday. Family all pitches in and hides plastic eggs filled with candy, sugarless gum, dollar bills and more. You could also hide eggs the night before in your own yard (or even around the house!) after your kids go to sleep so they can have an after-breakfast hunt at their own home! 7. A Special Meal. Get together with family for a special meal. If you won’t be able to be with family this Easter, invite some friends and neighbors over for a potluck meal at your place. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant … a ready-made ham, paper plates and plastic cutlery just mean less time in the kitchen and more time with loved ones. 8. Family Time. End the day relaxing with a bowl of Easter candy, some popcorn and a movie the whole family can enjoy. After a fun day celebrating Easter in all the ways you love, end your family day with some “hanging out” time. Nobody is allowed to text or play handheld video games or email. This is a time to snuggle up around the TV and reflect on the gift of family and friends.

SPRING BREAK
Shelling With Your Kids
Where to do your shelling:
N
eapolitans are used to picking up shells from our beautiful beaches. But do you know anything about those pretty shells? A shell hunting expedition could be just the thing to add some extra fun to a spring break day off of school. In general, an hour before and after low tide is the best time to find shells. A full moon or new moon offers the most extreme tides, making it a great time to go shelling. Most shells found on local beaches are mollusks meaning the skeleton is on the outside of the body for protection. That outside skeleton or shell is made of hard calcium. Inside the shell lives the soft fleshy slug-like creatures. You’ll want to give each child a bucket, shovel, and small net. Be sure they understand the rules, the most important of which is that taking shells with live inhabitants is prohibited. Show them what to look for so they can see where the creature lives inside the shell. In addition to shells, you may find sand dollars (they usually wash up on beaches in May/June). The sand dollar has no arms or legs and moves by tiny spines on their body. If the sand dollar still has it spines, it’s alive and should be left alone. Sea stars (what we used to call starfish) also are popular on Naples beaches, especially after big storms and choppier waves. Sea stars are not fish, but animals. If they are moving, leave them be. Once they’ve washed up on shore and have hardened they are no longer alive and okay to pick up. When you get your shells home, you’ll want to clean them carefully. For most shells, boiling in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water will be effective. Once you pull from the water, lay them in the sun on paper towels until they are thoroughly dry. To clean sand dollars, soak in fresh water, changing it when it begins to brown. After they have soaked for a few hours you can use the 50/50 bleach solution for 5-10 minutes. Be sure you rinse them thoroughly and let them dry. Sand dollars will crumble if left in bleach for more than a few minutes so watch them carefully and remove sooner rather than later. Sea stars can be cleaned by soaking them in isopropyl alcohol for 12-24 hours. Let them dry completely in the sun. Once the kids have their shells all cleaned, check out the identification chart at http:// www.seashells.org to see if you can figure out what shells you have. You can then label them, place in a pretty bowl or vase, or use in a variety of fun crafts projects.
Make your shelling excursion a scavenger hunt by Googling “shell identification chart.” You’ll charts that you can print for the kids to use in their hunt. 42

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park Beach. Located at 11135 Gulfshore Dr. in Naples, Delnor-Wiggins Pass Beach is consistently named one of the 10 best beaches in America. The entry fee is $6 per car and there is plenty of parking plus concessions and bathrooms. Park at either end and walk the one-mile length. Barefoot Beach. The best place to focus your efforts is on the southern end of the beach. Sand dollars especially are plentiful and there are many reports of shark’s teeth being found. If you have a Collier beach permit, there is no parking fee. Located at 505 Barefoot Beach Blvd., Bonita Springs. Tigertail Beach, Marco Island. The northern part of Tigertail Beach offers excellent shelling. Check out Sand Dollar Island, a sandbar off Tigertail, for plentiful sand dollars. Located at 400 Hernando Drive, Marco Island. Captiva Island and Sanibel Island. Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are shelling destinations known for larger conch, cockle, and scallop shells. The north end of Captiva, including Captiva Beach and Turner Beach, is a great place to start. Conch, clam, whelk and scallop shells are common at the Sanibel beaches. Lighthouse Beach is a great destination for smaller shell varieties. Sweet Liberty Beach Island Shelling Cruise. If you’d like an expert guide, check out the catamaran cruises that leave daily at 9:00 a.m. and drop you on remote Keewaydin Island for an hour of shelling. Cruises are $40 per person. SUMMER PLANNING
By Anna Futrell
How to choose your child’s
Summer Camp S
ummer of 2016 is right around the corner. What will your family be doing once school gets out at the beginning of June? Taking a wait-and-see approach to the summer months can breed disaster for Southwest Florida parents. When it comes to summer camps and educational opportunities, it is important to plan ahead, gather information, and make informed decisions, rather than waiting and making decisions by default or out of desperation. Almost every camp available in the Naples area fills up very quickly, so it is important to register early and get your family excited about an amazing summer! Family Needs In searching for summer opportunities, it is always wise to start with family needs. If all parents or care providers work full-time, you will need to sign up for a full-time, allsummer program with hours that meet your family’s needs for care. If you are planning a vacation during the month of July for two weeks, you will need to select a program that allows for this type of absence, or one that allows families to sign up by the week. Maybe your child requires an educational support program or enrichment program. Your unique requirements, particularly as they relate to childcare, will drive decisions regarding summer camp.
Check out the Neapolitan Family Education & Camp Expo on March 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. for information on a variety of local camps! 44
neafamily.com
Goals and Objectives Do you have some goals related to your child’s growth and development over the summer? What activities do your children enjoy? What are some areas your child is passionate about? If your child is beginning (or continuing) to show some aptitude for a skill or displays a passion for an area of study, select one or two weeks of summer camps for your child in this particular field. NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2016
There are summer camps available in Naples in almost any niche or hobby, including sports, theater, music, art, dance, and martial arts. Many of these camps offer a focus in one particular skill, and yet offer varied activities throughout the day as well. Budget Yes, there are a variety of summer opportunities available. And yes, they are all varied and unique in terms of focus and goals. And no, they are not all created equal in terms of pricing. Be sure to set some expectations for your family in terms of what you’d like to spend over the course of the summer. This might mean constraining the amount of time spent in summer camps in order to allow for your children to pursue an area of study they are really excited about. Location and Logistics The location of the camp itself, the start and end times (don’t forget to note the times for before- and after-care), and the expectations on parents in terms of participation may constrain your family’s summer camp selections. Before taking on a summer camp that requires a long drive to a location far from your house, consider the start time and the effort involved during a time of year when a relaxed culture often permeates most families’ homes. A few local camps provide transportation from central locations. Check for availability and pricing with each camp. Some summer camps may involve a longer day than your child may be prepared to take on later in the summer months as well. It is important to plan for and consider your children’s needs as you make decisions.

Educate Yourself As a parent, one of the best ways to select a summer camp (or summer camps) for your child is to gather information in person. This will give you the best sense of the individual programs, and give you the opportunity to get all your questions answered. Visiting the facility can be beneficial in your search for a great summer program match for your family. Before you spend lots of time visiting various camp facilities around Southwest Florida, grab your calendar and plan to attend the 2016 Summer Education and Camp Expo! Neapolitan Family Magazine is sponsoring this event on March 24 at the Greater Naples YMCA. There, parents can find comprehensive information about Southwest Florida summer camps and educational programs all in one place. Lots of vendors will be present at this event to discuss opportunities for summer 2016. The expo will take place from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on March 24 at the Greater Naples YMCA. Parents and children will be able to spend time visiting the booths and gaining insight about various educational opportunities and summer camps. We hope to see you there! Remember – it is never too early to plan for a great summer! Get out your calendar, discuss vacations and trips, and start budgeting for the array of educational and enrichment opportunities available to Naples area families during Summer 2016. ANNA FUTRELL has a bachelor’s in English and Secondary Education from Wheaton College. Anna and her husband, Jim have a daughter, Windley.
