One of the truths of parenting is that the moment you have one stage of your child’s life figured out, they immediately move on to the next. My daughter is 16, and while I certainly haven’t mastered the teen years, she at least is happily ensconced at FGCU as a dual enrollment student, earning both high school and college credits. The road to that choice was a lengthy one, but do I get any time to revel in that success? Nope. The college admissions process now is looming, and often it feels overwhelming. I found help on page 28. This article by Amanda Sterk, Ph.D., outlines a strategy for the decision-making process that will help your student (and you) focus and get organized. Every February we publish our Education Guide because, as parents, we know how important it is to find the right fit academically for our children. Are you considering changing schools? Or is your child about to enter school for the first time? Our annual education directory starting on page 19 provides important information about Naples’ finest preschools, schools, and tutors. And check out our BIG list of area schools on page 26. We are introducing a new monthly column called The Book List, written by author Kate Higginbotham. Each month she will introduce great book options for your children. Turn to page 12 for her picks that honor Black History Month. Happy February!

eloise Hoffman, a senior at Community School of Naples, was named a top 300 scholar in the 81st annual Regeneron Science Talent Search, a nationwide science and math competition for high school seniors. Heloise’s project centered on furthering the research around her own disorder. Her work, Self-Reported Reduced Sleep Quality and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness in Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, is the largest study of subjective sleep characteristics in patients with FSHD to date. Through nearly 700 questionnaire responses, she discovered a link between Heloise Hoffmann an FSHD diagnosis and lowered sleep quality, in addition to a highly significant connection between sleep and pain in patients, among other factors. Her paper has been submitted for publication to the peer-reviewed scientific journal Muscle & Nerve. Hoffman, one of only a dozen students selected from Florida, gave credit to two of her teachers. “Mrs. Lewton and Dr. Scherff were hugely influential in fueling my passion for research and science and guiding me through my research endeavors,” she said. Betsy Lewton is the chair of CSN’s Science Department with whom Heloise previously had studied, and Lisa Scherff, Ph.D., is her teacher for Advance Placement Research. Each Regeneron Science Talent Search scholar will receive $2,000, and their schools also will receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities. Visit www.communityschoolnaples.org.

Naples 6-Year-Old Completes Fundraiser for Kids With Cancer
N
icole Sella, a first grader at Lake Park Elementary, raised more than $500 by selling bookmarks and fundraising for ABEO, an Italian organization that cares for children with cancer. The 6-year-old was inspired by another Lake Park student who was collecting canned goods, according to Giulia Piccari, Nicole’s mother. Nicole decided to draw Christmas-themed bookmarks to sell for $1 each, and donate the proceeds to ABEO. Nicole and her mother spent several late nights preparing more than 200 bookmarks. Their efforts paid off with support coming in from around the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. In the end, Nicole donated $540 to ABEO. “Nicole’s message to the other kids and adults is to spend less time on their phones and tablets and more time with a good book in their hands,” said Piccari. She noted that she hopes Nicole’s story will inspire other children not only to read, but also to help others.

How to Ease Your Child’s Fear of Going to the Dentist dentist to monitor their development, which, coupled with consistent at-home brushing and flossing, can prevent serious oral health issues. Routine visits also can help your child build a healthy relationship with dental checkups. Set expectations Before your child’s dental appointment, talk positively about what will happen. Explain how the hygienist and dentist will look at their teeth to see how healthy and strong they are. Also, let your child know the staff will use helpful tools to count, examine, and clean their teeth to make them white and bright. Practice at home Play dentist! Have your child sit in a chair and hold up a mirror as you gently brush, floss, and count their teeth. Remember to keep things positive, avoid scary noises, and no talking about drills, needles, or pain.

Don’t use negative language If you struggle with dental anxiety yourself, you may unwittingly pass your fear on to your child. To prevent your child from inheriting your fear of the dentist try not to show or talk about your distress in front of your child. If you cannot hide your anxiety, consider explaining to your child that this is not a good fear to have and how you are working to overcome it, or bring along a trusted family member who has no anxiety.
Don’t delay care The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that kids have their first dental checkup when they get their first tooth or no later than their first birthday. And, similar to adults, children should see the dentist every six months. Routine checkups allow the

Furthermore, pediatric dentists undergo specialized training to work with young mouths and teeth.
t is normal for children to fear going to the dentist. With the odd sounds and smells of the office coupled with strangers in masks poking around in their mouth with metal instruments, their fear is understandable. However, for the health of their teeth and their emotional well-being, it is important to help your child overcome their dental anxiety or ensure they don’t develop a fear in the first place.
Consider sedation In some instances, if extreme fear or a young age compromises treatment, your pediatric dentist may recommend sedation. Moderate sedation can ease discomfort and anxiety, especially if several procedures need to be done during a single visit. Additionally, if you child has a medical, physical, or emotional disability that limits their ability to understand directions and remain calm, sedation can help. DOUGLAS B. THE BOOK LIST
By Kate Higginbotham
Henry’s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine Caldecott Medal winner Henry’s Freedom Box follows the true story of Henry Brown, a slave who mailed himself from Richmond, Virginia, to freedom in Philadelphia during the time of the Underground Railroad. Author Ellen Levine and illustrator Kadir Nelson powerfully capture the drama and intensity of Henry Brown’s experience in a way that is suited for young audiences. Rosa by Nikki Giovanni This picture book tells the civil rights story of Rosa Parks through beautiful illustrations by Bryan Collier and moving prose by legendary African American poet and activist Nikki Giovanni. It was adapted to film in 2007 and narrated by the author herself. The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis This middle-grade classic and Newberry Honor winner follows the Watson family as they head to Birmingham to visit relatives at the height of the civil rights movement. In the city at the same time as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., they witness marches and even are present at the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing orchestrated by the Ku Klux Klan, which claimed the lives of four young black girls. With incredible characters, valuable themes, and important historical perspectives, The Watsons Go To Birmingham is a must-read for middle schoolers. Witness by Karen Hesse Written in a creative, outside-the-box format, Karen Hesse’s Witness captures a small, pastoral Vermont town plagued by the Ku Klux Klan, and the two motherless young girls who have become KKK targets: 12-year-old Leonora Sutter, who is black, and 6-year-old Esther Hirsch, who is Jewish. Hesse tells the story in a series of diary entries and poems from 11 distinct characters, weaving mystery and suspense through both real and fictitious events in 1924. A hidden gem among young reader historical fiction, Witness is a powerful story with plenty of themes that extend well beyond the page. Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson This novel is the first in a historical fiction trilogy for young readers. Following a 13-year-old enslaved girl and her sister who are taken to New York after the death of their owners, the novel provides an emotional perspective into slavery at the time of the American Revolution. Chains has won several children’s book awards, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal in 2008, and was a National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature in 2008.

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines Perfect for teen and young adult readers, A Lesson Before Dying is the story of two young black men in 1940s Louisiana: Grant Wiggins, fresh out of college and returning to his hometown to teach, and Jefferson, who is caught on the scene of a shootout and, being the only survivor, is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Implored by his aunt and Jefferson’s grandmother, Grant visits Jefferson in jail in the days leading up to his execution, hoping to instill some pride in and impart his knowledge onto Jefferson before his time runs out. This 1993 classic forces the reader to consider compassion, empathy, and the complexity of human psychology against a background of racial injustice. KATE HIGGINBOTHAM is a writer, reader, and editor from North Alabama. After self-publishing several young adult novels, spending a considerable amount of time abroad, and graduating from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Kate moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she spends her time elbow-deep in literature of all kinds. COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Chad Oliver
New Student Registration, Choice, & Parent Academy
T
his school year ushered in a new way for parents to engage in their children’s education, and we already are preparing for the next school year. Beginning Feb. 1, parents may register their children for the 2022-23 school year in the A-rated Collier County Public Schools. The online registration (www.collierschools.com/ registration) is for students who are new to the school district or are returning to CCPS, meaning they did not attend a CCPS school this year. There is no need to visit the district offices in person to complete the registration process. Parents may simply upload the required documents and then check status updates through the Online Centralized Registration System. People who are new to our community often will ask where the “good schools” are located. The fact is, CCPS does not have any schools with a ‘D’ or ‘F’ rating. They are all good schools! Whether in Naples, Immokalee, or Everglades City, our students learn from high-quality instructional staff and attend beautiful campuses maintained to a high level of excellence. As the calendar flips to February, we currently are in the middle of an important time for those who prefer an option other than their neighborhood school. Parental

Choice allows parents, under specified conditions, to request another school of enrollment outside of their geographic zones. Options include Out-of-Zone, School Choice, and the McKay and Family Empowerment Scholarships. The priority window for Parental Choice runs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 15. For questions regarding Parental Choice or zoning, call 239-377-0540 or visit www.collierschools. com/parentalchoice. Want to be more involved in your child’s education but have trouble even checking grades online? Help is available! We are excited about the recent launch of our CCPS Parent Academy, which provides educational opportunities and resources for parents to become fully engaged partners in their child’s education. Information
regarding upcoming events, parent seminars, community resources, and continuing adult education programs can be found on the CCPS Parent Academy website at www.collierschools.com/pa. Parents with a CCPS student may register to participate in Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families Parent Series. The free sessions run through May at our high schools across Collier County. And yes, we even will walk you through navigating our online learning management system, Canvas, which allows students to stay on top of assignments even when they physically are not on a school campus. Children greatly benefit when parents are fully engaged in their educational journey, and we are committed to supporting those important connections. Our students and schools are a tremendous source of community pride and are critical to the current and future success of Collier County. Community members often are the best broadcasters of school district information like new student registration, available choice options, and parent resources. The next time someone asks where the good schools are, you’ll know the answer. CHAD OLIVER is executive director of communications & community engagement for Collier County Public Schools.

Meet the Principal
John DeMasi is the principal of Mason Classical Academy, a high-performing charter school in Naples that delivers a classical education to more than 1,200 students in grades K-12. Mr. DeMasi is a student of history, graduated from Ave Maria University, and has his master’s degree in education. As a young man, it was important to him that he received a classical education, and therefore worked to pay his own way through high school. The determined effort that he put forth during his formative years helped prepare him to lead students into a deep understanding of hard work, perseverance, and personal responsibility, in addition to an appreciation of a good education. Mr. DeMasi’s upbringing, family dynamic, and education paved the way for him to assume the role as principal at MCA. He is successfully guiding the school into maintaining its mission of delivering a high-quality, classical education to all students, tuition-free, regardless of income or ZIP code. Mr. DeMasi has worked for MCA since its founding in 2014. During that inaugural year, he led the third grade teachers and students to an astonishing pass rate on the English FSA, helping to propel the school toward its current status in the top 1% of all public schools in the state of Florida. Apart from a stellar record of teaching and leadership, Teacher of the 16

Annaleah Miravalle, current K-12 Academic Dean, became Mrs. DeMasi after working next to him at MCA for five years. They have a son, and they enjoy being a part of the Naples community. During any given school day, Mr. DeMasi can be found in classrooms, at recess, and at car line. He believes that to be an effective administrator, it is imperative to be present throughout the school. A fan of classical literature, Mr. DeMasi is an avid reader of authors J.R.R. Tolkien, Fyodor
Dostoevsky, and Wendell Berry. He firmly believes in looking on the bright side of life, and consistently relays that message to MCA students and faculty. When asked how he maintains such a positive attitude, he says it is because he has a God who loves him, a wife who loves him, and lives in the greatest country in the world. Mr. DeMasi encourages any family desiring a rigorous, classical education for their child to apply now during open enrollment for the 2022-23 school year. Community School of Naples, an independent, preK-12 college preparatory day school, was launched in 1982 by a group of parents seeking to establish a private school close to home. Today CSN has more than 800 students and a $40 million, 77-acre campus with 21 buildings, including athletics fields and swimming pool. CSN offers a comprehensive curriculum focused on academic rigor; opportunities in athletics and arts, both fine and performing; and character development. These elements ensure that each student experiences a challenging education only an independent, college preparatory school can provide. One hundred percent of CSN graduates attend four-year colleges and universities, with many attending our nation’s most selective and highly competitive schools.

Taking the Stress Out of College Admissions
SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
T
he college admissions process can be a stressful time in a family’s life. Students and parents are bombarded by information about when they should do what, what programs students should attend, and where to apply. The process can be information overload for everyone, causing heightened anxiety and a sense of inadequacy. To top it off, watching the social media of parents and students who seem to have it all together can be downright frustrating. Many websites and companies continually try convince you that unless you pay thousands of dollars for their services, your student will not get into their “dream school” and their life will be ruined. I put “dream school” in quotes because many students cannot answer the question of why it’s their dream school. Often, when push comes to shove and a student is honest, it is a college they may not even want to attend. It’s more about the idea of saying they got in. The process does not have to be stressful. On the contrary, when done right and in a certain sequence, it can be engaging, fun, and an opportunity to make quality, informed decisions. The issue is many families simply don’t know what to do and when and, more importantly, what questions to ask. It’s why only 45% of students actually graduate from college within four years! Three counselor educators, authors, and researchers (including this author) knew there had to be a better way for families to walk through the process with confidence and, dare I say, a little swagger. Utilizing our combined 80 years experience of working with students and parents and school and college counselors, as well as the latest research, we developed a highly effective strategy to help guide students through the high school to college process. The LEADS strategy was born to build a foundation of knowledge and then to continue to home in on a student’s values, desirability, selectivity, and a host of other factors to ensure student success. In the new book College UnMazed: Your Guide Through the High School to College Process, we not only focus on building college and career readiness factors, but we also guide families through the LEADS strategy to research, apply, and decide on colleges.

At this beginning stage, as early as 10th or 11th grade, students should focus on three of the 6 Keys of College Fit, which are academic match, career match, financial match, personal match, student outcomes, and student support. This includes things such as size, location, majors offered, and special programs. We encourage students not to think of this list as final, and to continue to research different colleges of all shapes and sizes. EXPLORE. Once a list is constructed, students should start to explore each college by gathering and analyzing key information. This is done by working on a detailed document called the College Data Organizer (found as a free download at www.collegeunmazed. com), which helps students dive deeper into the 6 Keys of College Fit for each college. Students should then take the time to explore each college’s Common Data Set (a list of academic and nonacademic factors used in college admissions) and visit each college. Once students have this information, they will start to be able to articulate why each college on their list is important to them. APPLY. While most students want to jump right into writing their applications, they need to complete one more step. This process usually begins the summer before a student’s senior year into early October. They need to understand their overall fit using the 6 Keys along with their chances of admissions at each of their potential colleges. Often things like selectivity (how many students a college accepts) override a student’s actual fit to the college. Merging these two ideas together provides the answer for each student to “Is this college right for me? And what are my chances of getting in?” At this stage, students have gathered information, explored their options, and developed a list of colleges that meet both their needs and chances of admissions. They need to start applying to colleges using a step-by-step approach to understand what documents are needed, the types of applications to use, and which application pool and deadlines are best to increase the NEAPOLITANfamily • February 2022

chances of admissions. DECIDE. After taking the first three steps of LEADS the student should feel confident about where they are applying. As acceptance letters come in, it is time to make real, informed decisions about what to accept. Students should understand what type of admissions is being offered, complete a Financial Aid Award Letter Comparison Chart (found at www.collegeunmazed.com), and reassess their 6 Keys on the colleges they were accepted to. As well, this is the time that students should bring in their own personal thoughts and desire to attend each college and re-rank each college based on any new knowledge during the months between submitting their application and receiving a decision. Additionally, students should tap into their college support network to receive feedback before making their final decision. SUCCEED. This is where many websites and programs stop talking about college process – how does a student actually succeed at a college? In College UnMazed, we believe that students need to develop three integrated plans – academic, social, and financial – to be successful as they transition to college. In this stage, there are some very important decisions to be made as a family that will affect the student’s next four years to ensure on-time graduation and an overall great experience. Following the LEADS strategy will help each family focus on each stage of the process in manageable pieces. It is designed for the student to secure the right knowledge at the right time so, as parents, you know they are ready to make their first life-changing decision. NEAPOLITANfamily • February 2022
