Nichole is a loving 28-year-old mother whose journey through addiction has been long and painful. Despite several attempts at sobriety for her son’s sake, patterns repeated and she lost custody. She racked up arrest after arrest and her life spiraled out of control. When Nichole entered the Collier County Drug Court program, she made the best choice of her life. She spent the next 15-months surrendering completely to the treatment process. She did the work and learned the tools. While in Crossroads Residential, she embraced the equine and art therapy, and yoga classes and flourished. Now sober for two years, Nicole has her son back and is expecting her “second chance”. She works her program, stays active and healthy and has “a great life” counting her blessings one day at a time.
Her Recovery is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Nichole is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in ten of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community. A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. D O N AT E O N L I N E :
When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

10 Tips to Hook Reluctant Readers
I
t’s been proven that having the ability to read well contributes to your child’s overall success in school. But what can you do if every time you suggest he pick up a book you hear responses like these: “I hate reading.” “Reading is boring.” “I don’t want to read, can’t I just play a video game?”
Here are 10 simple tips to hook your reluctant reader in unexpected ways. 1. Look beyond books. You may have to ease off the expectation that your reluctant reader has to read a book. Kids can read all kinds of things to learn new words. This includes: Labels on items in the grocery store Ingredients in their favorite cereal Magazines written just for their age group Rules for how to play games 2. Let them listen. When kids listen to an audio book or tune in to their favorite songs or go to story time at the library, they are tied in to a story of some kind, which actively engages them in learning and may pique their interest in reading on their own. 3. Use technology. Have you ever read a book you liked so much you wanted to know more about the author? Kids can be like this too. If you find a book your child likes, see if the author has a website. Many children’s authors include fun facts about their books online or offer discussion guides and insights into how they write. 4. Start her on a series. Get your child started with the first book in a series, then sit back and let her devour the sequels one by one. Series popular with reluctant early readers include Horrid Henry, by Francesca Simon, The Diary of A Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney, and Dork Diaries, by Rachel Rene Russell. Middle readers may appreciate books by Rick Riordan, who wrote his Percy Jackson series to appeal to his dyslexic son. 10

5. Try nonfiction. Does he love dogs and horses? Does he want to know more about sharks and snakes? Some kids love learning about facts, and they’ll turn page after page to find out more about animals or machines or how children in other parts of the world live. 6. Find the right kind of fiction. Just like you may enjoy certain types of books more than others, it’s likely that your child does too. Children’s authors write in all kinds of genres that may appeal to your reluctant reader including: Science fiction; Fantasy; Mystery; Historical fiction; Contemporary fiction Try out different types to find what your child likes. 6. Make them laugh. Funny poems for kids, which are usually short and end with a punch line, are especially good at keeping the pages turning. Often kids are laughing so hard they don’t even think about the fact that they are reading. Find a collection by an author like Jack Prelutsky or Kenn Nesbitt and leave it lying in a spot where your child can easily pick it up. Better yet, sit with your child and read a few poems out loud to get the ball rolling. 7. Go short. Thick books can intimidate children who don’t think of themselves as good readers. Hook them by looking for books with less than 200 pages or large type that makes it easy for them to feel they are making progress each time they turn a page. 8. Look for graphics. You may be inclined to dismiss graphic novels, which use pictures and words to tell a story, as less than a “real book.” But with their vivid images, unconventional typefaces, and word bubbles, graphic novels are often the ideal books to draw in reluctant readers. 9. Play word games. Include a few word games in your line-up for family game night. Some of these, like Boggle Jr. and Scrabble Jr., are geared to kids as young as five. You can also find good word-game apps by checking with a trusted source such as commonsensemedia.org. 10. Partner with the library. Children’s librarians are great at finding just the right book to put into the hands of all kinds of readers. Another plus? You can go to the library and come back with a stack of books without paying a penny. If nothing appeals to your child, you can try again with more books the next time you visit. CINDY HUDSON writes about books and reading at MotherDaughterBookClub.com.

RACHEL RECOMMENDS
Book Reviews
RACHEL NEWMAN is 10 years old and in the fifth grade at Sea Gate Elementary. She is active in Irish dancing, piano, flute, acting and volleyball. Writing, reading, and watching “I Love Lucy” are her great joys, along with taking pictures of her cats.
A Mostly Kids’ Guide to Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades by Karen T. Bartlett
I
was so excited to receive my first review copy of a book, and I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to interview the author. I’ve also never interviewed anyone before. So I did a phone interview with Karen Bartlett, who wrote A Mostly Kids’ Guide to Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades. Here are some of the questions and answers from that fascinating interview. I found out about a bunch of fun things to do in Naples that I never knew about before. Rachel: What inspired you to write this book? Karen Bartlett: I have written, photographed, or edited 11 books, and they are all destination travel books. I did them for traditional publishers, and I had to follow all of their rules. After a while, I decided that I didn’t like having to put only 30 word captions under every picture. I wanted to color outside the lines a little bit. I wanted to be able to scribble on the pictures and put type upside down. So I decided to do it for myself. Now I get to do anything I want. Of course, I have to pay all of the bills and meet all of the deadlines, but there’s nobody to tell me I can’t do something. So I’m having fun. This time I decided to do something that’s a destination book for kids rather than grownups. It’s a guidebook but it’s not a typical guidebook. And it’s not a storybook. People look at the cover and say “This looks like a cool kids’ storybook.” And then they’ll open it up, and see it’s not really a storybook. On the other hand, you’ll see stories about pirates, and the Calusa Indians. Did you know, for instance, that Ponce de Leon was killed by a Calusa Indian ar12
neafamily.com
row? I sure didn’t. This book is educational, but it’s fun. It’s not a storybook but it has stories. It’s a guidebook but it’s not. It’s hard to decide exactly what it is. You have to decide for yourself. Kids don’t want to read the directions to get someplace or how much it costs or the hours they are open. They all have devices, so they can go to their phone or ipad and look up the website or phone number and get the current information. I didn’t want to waste a lot of time on stuff kids don’t really want to read, so I’ve stuck all of that in back (each location mentioned in the book is listed alphabetically in the back, along with website addresses and phone numbers). My feeling is, kids want to see really cool pictures and they want to find out something bizarre that they didn’t know before. Kids don’t want guidebooks. They want to have fun, they want to see it fast and decide if they like it, and then turn the page. And that’s exactly what I’ve done. Rachel: How did you get started in writing? Karen Bartlett: When I got out of college, I went to a newspaper office to apply (Atlanta Journal Constitution), and back in those days in a newspaper office, everyone’s just sitting out in one big office. I was afraid I couldn’t write in a giant noisy newsroom, so I did the next best thing. After a couple of non-newspaper jobs, where I got to do a little bit of writing, I started my own advertising agency and gave myself an office with an actual door I could close, to write my heart out in peace and quiet! Rachel: What is your favorite place to visit in the book? Karen Bartlett: It depends. I’m a photographer, too, and if the early morning light is beautiful and I’m in a flowery mood, I will go to the Naples Botanical Gardens. If I’m in a hiking mood, I’ll put on my hiking shoes and my little photographer’s vest, and I’ll go down into the Everglades, and maybe take an airboat ride or camp out in one of those chickee huts down there. How many people know that you can actually camp in an authentic Seminole chickee hut on their reservation? It just depends on the mood I’m in. And that’s what is good about this book. Rachel: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Karen Bartlett: Don’t follow all the rules. Think for yourself. I mean, that’s why you’re a writer, because you have these ideas. Sometimes you’re just minding your own business and an idea pops up, and you think, “Where did that come from?” That’s why you are a writer. That’s why you are a creative person. So listen to yourself and don’t follow everyone’s rules. Color outside the lines sometimes and draw stick people if you want to. Karen Bartlett’s next book, A Mostly Kids’ Guide to Sanibel and Captiva Islands and the Fort Myers Coast, is coming out in mid-January. Thank you to Karen Bartlett for a fascinating interview and to my mom for typing out the recording of the interview for me! If you have suggestions for books for Rachel to review, e-mail your suggestions to: rachel.v.newman@outlook.com. NEAPOLITANfamily • January 2016

HAPPY, HEALTHY FAMILY
Eleven
By Carolyn Jabs
H
ere’s a news flash: Life can be stressful. For parents. And for kids. Technology, of course, is part of the problem. And it can also be part of the solution. The apps described below were designed to promote well-being. Some are intended specifically for family members at different ages and stages; others are more generic. All offer respite from the demands and pressures of family life. Apps like these have been developed in response to a growing body of research indicating that stress is at the root of many social, mental and physical problems. The antidote is often mindfulness which can be cultivated in a variety of ways. Research suggests that becoming more aware of bodily sensations, thoughts and feelings can help people cope with anxiety, sleep more deeply, focus on tasks and enjoy family time more. Download one or more of these suggestions to find out whether one of them helps the people in your family relax and connect with what’s important. Mindfulness for Pregnancy helps expectant parents become deeply aware of the physical and emotional changes of pregnancy. The program includes guides to gentle yoga stretches, walking meditation, loving kindness meditation and being with baby meditation. $2.99. Apple
Apps for Families
Sleepy Sounds is one of many apps that promise to help children (and adults) fall asleep. This app offers choices—you can tune in to white noise, nature sounds, a lullaby or music of your own choosing. The app also provides a soothing animation that can function as a nightlight for children, and you can set a timer so the sound doesn’t play all night. Free. Apple, Android. Settle Your Glitter is a deceptively simple app that can be used by children as young as five. The app asks children to become aware of they are feeling. Then they see a virtual snow globe filled with swirling glitter. Coached by a friendly puffer fish, kids can settle the glitter by breathing deeply. The app is produce by the Momentous Institute which also created Breathing Bubbles, another app which encourages children (or, for that matter, adults) to breath deeply as they “release a worry” or “receive a joy.” Free, Apple. Smiling Mind was created by a non-profit in Australia and has content customized for different age levels. Children answer a few questions and then are encouraged to practice easy-to-follow meditations designed to calm the mind and relieve stress. The app keeps track of progress and includes connections to Facebook and Twitter. Free. Apple, Android.

NEW MOM’S CORNER
By Anna Futrell
Where to Go When Your Pediatrician Tells You Not to Go Anywhere A
dd this to the list of new mom woes -- for the first eight weeks of your newborn’s life, your pediatrician advises you not to take your newborn to any public place. This includes (but is not limited to): the grocery store, church, restaurants, parties, moms’ mornings outs, and the Baby Gap. If you are a new mom, and you’re like me, I immediately asked, “WHAT? WHY?” (All caps intended for effect.) I was shocked and surprised when my little one was born – at just how difficult life became, at how incredibly beautiful and amazing she was (and still is), and at the fact that I didn’t realize I was going to be homebound for eight entire weeks. Why do pediatricians recommend keeping newborns away from public places for the first eight weeks of a baby’s life? According to Dr. Debra Shepard of Lighthouse Pediatrics, “If your newborn develops a fever or other illness, a full work-up, often including a hospital stay and invasive testing, is required.” Dr. Shepard went on to explain her recommendation that new moms stay at home. “Becoming a mom is
overwhelming in and of itself. Adding in an illness makes it even more so. When moms have their second, third, fourth babies (etc.), it is difficult (though still recommended) to keep a newborn at home for eight weeks, thereby limiting exposure. For new moms, though, it can be possible and highly recommended to keep your little one protected from the outside world as they get acclimated to life outside the womb.” Limiting exposure to germs is certainly much easier on your home turf. It is within the realm of possibility to keep your home clean and to limit your newborn’s exposure to harmful germs and bacteria, particularly
when you don’t have other children living in your home. Moreover, when you make the decision to take your newborn baby with you to various places, it is often very difficult for others not to invade your space. Well-meaning adults –friends, co-workers, or acquaintances – often ask to hold the newborn or reach out to touch the baby. These types of interactions, though, can possibly put your newborn at risk for contracting an illness. However, as a new mom, staying home for that many weeks on end can lend itself to a stir-crazy disposition. As a new mom, I felt the importance of getting out of my

house acutely. After just a few days, though the stakes were high, I was very tempted to bring my newborn around with me to shop, go out for coffee, and just be out of my home. Though I did follow the recommendation of my pediatrician, I opted to seek out some places and spaces where I could walk around with my newborn and interact with others in a limited way without exposing my baby to (very many) germs. Fortunately, in Southwest Florida, we have lots of options. Here are a few of my favorites: 1. Walk your neighborhood. If you live in a neighborhood with sidewalks (or one that is relatively quiet), make it a habit of taking a walk each and every day. Getting outside with your newborn for a quick break from the house is so beneficial. 2. Window shop at the Mercato. Take a field trip to the Mercato shopping area on the corner of 41 and Vanderbilt Beach Road. People watch, look in shop windows, and walk around the town center spaces. 3. Take a hike at the 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Just after Collier Seminole State Park on East 41, there is a one mile long, wide path that takes visitors into the Everglades. It is a lovely, quiet place to take your newborn, particularly from November through April. During the winter and spring months, there are so many beautiful birds that draw visitors. It is a great way to get out and enjoy Southwest Florida with a newborn. (Caution: do not visit this area during the summers – mosquitos are everywhere!) 4. Eat at a full service, outdoor restaurant. Take your newborn to a restaurant that offers shaded, outdoor eating with full service. That way, you don’t have to go into an enclosed area to order or sit down. Enjoy being outdoors with your newborn, and limit exposure to germs. 5. Take an extended walk (as you are able) at one of several wide, paved paths in Naples. Options include: The Gordon River Greenway, Freedom Park, North Collier Regional Park, Vineyards Boulevard, or Pelican Bay Boulevard. Commit to trying one new route each week with your baby. Each of these options provides mostly shaded walking paths, wide sidewalks, and lots of foot traffic. (As a new mom, interacting with people was typically my main objective, even if it was just a quick smile or wave from a passerby.) As is the case with any information presented in this column, check with your own pediatrician about various recommendations. Each baby (and each new mom) is different and has different needs. Also, make sure your newborn is dressed appropriately – not too hot or too cold. A good rule of thumb is to put your newborn in the amount of layers that would feel good to you, given current conditions. Bring extra layers – such as baby blankets –just in case the weather changes. Getting out of the house with a newborn is exciting. Take your time, and enjoy introducing your little one to this wonderful world! ANNA FUTRELL has a bachelor’s in English and Secondary Education from Wheaton College. Anna and her husband, Jim have a daughter, Windley. Anna is passionate about writing, cooking, running, playing the piano, and encouraging other new moms in their journey. Time To Apply For Out-Of-Zone Or School Choice
I
f you want your child to attend a school other than the one he or she is zoned for, it’s time for you to submit a Collier County Public Schools Out-of-Zone or School Choice request. Parents of students who are currently in either program must re-apply. Approval is based on space available at each school, and school bus services is not available in either case. Per Board Policy 5120, the assignment of a child to a school (not to include an exceptional student program assignment) in a geographic area other than the school normally designated is referred to as an “Out-of-Zone” school assignment. Out-of-Zone assignments are based on need, such as after-school care or work schedules for elementary students, high school attendance at a specific career academy, or hardships. Parents submitting an Outof-Zone application must provide supporting documentation. Approvals are determined on a first-come, first-served basis, based on space available at each grade level and at the school requested. For priority consideration, Out-of-Zone applications must be submitted before January 15. For priority consideration, School Choice applications must be submitted any time during January. You may apply for either application online at www.collierschools.com/zoning For further questions or to submit documents: contact zoninginfo@collierschools.com or call 239-377-0540.

The Family Ride Adventures by Bicycle
C
ycling is great exercise and a great way to connect with family. With several cycling-specific trails, beautiful scenery and perfect winter weather, Naples is certainly a good choice for family cycling. What better time to strap on a helmet, grab a water bottle and take to the road than January? You can pedal off the holiday pounds while enjoying family time! To get started, check your equipment. Until children are 4 or 5, they will most likely be passengers on one of the adult bikes. When you’re deciding between a seat or a trailer, consider that the age range for the trailer is from about 8 weeks (with an infant car seat secured inside) to 6 years old. The trailer is more expensive but it will have a much longer life and if you have more than one child, a trailer makes cycling as a family much more doable. The children are safer inside the trailer even if the parent falls because the trailer will most likely remain upright. For older children, child seats are cheaper than trailers and require less leg power on the part of the adult. Most seats suit children from about one to four years old.
If parents are experienced riders and want to go on long rides with children, a trailer bike may be a good solution. Basically, a trailer bike is half a bike plus a towing arm so the child is under your direct control. Over the age of 6 or so, children will generally be on their own bike. Be sure the bike is fitted correctly, isn’t too big for their height and is in good condition. Finally, every member of the family should be wearing an approved helmet at all times. Before setting out on a family ride, read through the Florida state laws to be sure you are meeting the requirements. Go over the laws with your child so they understand their importance. It’s imperative that children understand basics like how to share paths with walkers and what to do at corners and entrances. FOR MORE INFO: City of Naples Bike Lane map: http://g. naplesgov.com/naplesbikelanes/ Florida Bicycling laws: http://www.naplesgov. com/DocumentCenter/View/26326
BASIC RULES OF THE ROAD
• Always wear a properly fitted helmet. • Adjust your bicycle to fit. There should be 1 to 2 inches between you and the top tube (bar) if using a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if a mountain bicycle. The seat should be level front to back. The seat height should be adjusted to allow a slight bend at the knee when the leg is fully extended. The handlebar height should be at the same level with the seat. • Check your equipment. Before riding, inflate tires properly and check that your brakes work. • See and be seen. Always wear neon or other bright colors when riding day or night. • Control your bicycle. Always ride with at least one hand on the handlebars. Carry items in a bicycle carrier or backpack. • Watch for and avoid road hazards. Be on the lookout for hazards such as potholes, gravel, puddles, leaves, and dogs. • Go with the traffic flow. Ride on the right in the same direction as other vehicles. Go with the flow – not against it. • Obey all traffic laws. A bicycle is a vehicle and you’re a driver. Obey all traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. • Yield to traffic when appropriate. Almost always, drivers on a smaller road must yield for traffic on a major or larger road. If there is no stop sign or traffic signal and you are coming from a smaller roadway (out of a driveway, from a sidewalk, a bike path, etc.), you must slow down and look to see if the way is clear before proceeding. This also means yielding to pedestrians who have already entered a crosswalk. • Be predictable. Ride in a straight line, not in and out of cars. Signal your moves to others. • Watch for parked cars. Ride far enough out from the curb to avoid the unexpected from parked cars (like doors opening, or cars pulling out). For more information, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web site at: www.nhtsa.dot.gov

Say Yes to Yoga for Kids & Families
I
f you think yoga is about flexibility, challenging poses, and a Zen attitude, you’ve got part of it. Yoga has physical and emotional benefits for people of all ages including children. “Getting kids involved in yoga and meditation is a life-long win for them. Both yoga and meditation teach kids the benefits of fitness, but they are also valuable coping skills that kids can key into during life’s challenges,” says yoga teacher Kerin Monaco. Find Serenity, Strength, and Self-Confidence Monaco started practicing yoga herself in high school to combat crippling anxiety around SATs and college applications. She went on to teach yoga and recently began to share yoga with her young family. When her daughter was 9 months old, Monaco started to practice with her on the mat, where they both loved the peaceful energy that yoga brings. That peaceful energy is one of the key reasons adults practice yoga, and that calm is great for kids too. That’s not the only benefit though. Yoga teacher Katy Dagle, says that for younger kids, yoga builds coordination, balance, and self-regulation. For older kids, yoga continues to help with coordination and balance and also helps build flexibility, strength, and self-confidence. The emotional benefits can be especially helpful in the challenging tween and teen years. In addition to these physical and emotional benefits, yoga can help develop values, such as honesty and nonviolence.

Get Kids Started with Classes Both Monaco and Dagle recommend classes for kids. An experienced teacher helps children learn poses correctly and can offer modifications or adjustments to things the don’t feel right. Kids (and grownups) should be reminded to do what feels right for their body. Not every child can do every pose, and some days a familiar pose is harder than others. Yoga is noncompetitive. Teachers should help kids focus on their own practice every day and create a supportive environment. As Dagle reminds her students, “yoga is a practice not a perfect.” Once familiar with yoga, kids can use videos and yoga cards to practice at home. See the sidebar, “Yoga Tips and Tools for the Whole Family,” for tips on starting a family practice. Practice Anywhere Classes provide a safe introduction to yoga and ongo-
ing support, but the beauty of yoga is that you can practice any place and any time. Here are two practices you can do anywhere: Breathe: Breathing can be centering, energizing, or calming. For parents, try breathing deeply while holding an upset child. Monaco says “When my daughter is fussy, deep breathing with her in my arms works every time.” Dagle teaches older kids to use breathing exercises to calm themselves before a test. She encourages them to put their feet firmly on the ground at their desk, inhale for a count of four, and exhale for a count of six for one minute to to help them feel both calm and grounded. Be present: Practice mindfulness and being present. That means noticing your environment. There are lots of ways to practice this with kids—you don’t even have to call it mindfulness.

• Sit quietly together or go for a walk, and see what you notice. Try closing your eyes. What sounds and smells do you sense? • Turn off your phone and spend some time doing an activity with your kids, whether it’s reading, coloring, dancing, snuggling, building. Just focus on what you’re doing, with no distractions. • Describe something familiar as if it were new. In an exercise from Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children by Thich Nhat Hanh, kids pretend they are Martians seeing something from Earth for the first time. Hand your kids a familiar object (the book uses raisins, but you can use any simple object or food kids “see” every day). Remind them that they have never seen it before. Ask them to look, touch, smell, listen, and taste and describe their experience.

Yoga builds strength and flexibility, self-confidence and focus. Kids get comfortable in and connected to their own bodies and minds, and learn practices that they use for the rest of their lives. What’s not to say Yes to? Yoga Tips and Tools for the Whole Family Yoga benefits everyone. If you’ve practiced yoga before, it’s time to restart your practice. If you haven’t, why not try it yourself or as a family? Tips for Parents · Get back on the mat after having a baby. Monaco encourages new moms to get back on the mat as soon as your doctor gives the OK. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to get back. Just remember to meet your practice where it is. Your body has been through a lot. · Practice with your kids around. Monaco put her daughter on the mat with her as a baby. Dagle spreads out her mat in the playroom and practices while her kids play around (and under and over) her. If you’re used to a peaceful yoga studio, practicing with your kids around will be different, but you still get the benefits of practice. · Remember that your yoga is good for your kids. aving a resolution of eating healthier in 2016 is great, particularly if you are attempting to get your entire family to eat healthier. But what are some attainable, measurable goals to fulfill that resolution? Many families make the decision – whether out of convenience or necessity – to eat out multiple times per week. Resolving to eat healthier as a family often means making the decision to prepare meals at home. Eating at Home vs. Eating Out Typically, eating out involves much bigger portion sizes, higher fat content, and higher sodium content than that of home-cooked meals. We are accustomed to these larger portions – some are even two or three times as big as the portions recommended by the United States Dietary Guidelines. The tasty fat, sodium, and carbohydrates of meals prepared at restaurants make the food difficult to put down. Moreover, at restaurants, patrons have almost no control over the content of the food or how it is prepared.
40
neafamily.com
All of these factors make it difficult to make healthy selections at most restaurants, fast food places, and other eateries. Preparing home cooked meals using whole food ingredients – such as fresh meat, vegetables, and fruits – is one of the best ways to promote health and wellness within your home. Learning to Cook Delicious, Healthy Meals For some, the task of preparing home cooked meals is overwhelming. It is difficult
to know where to start, particularly if you are not used to preparing meals at home or using your kitchen in an efficient way. It is possible, though, to prepare home cooked, delicious, healthy meals your family wants to eat. Moreover, it is possible to do this quickly and easily in a relatively short amount of time. This healthy ideal may seem insurmountable for many families. However, there are resources right here in Southwest Florida that can make this goal attainable.
A Healthy Kitchen
Are you committed to healthier eating in 2016? Consider cooking classes to help you reach your goal!
NEAPOLITANfamily • January 2016
Chef Kristina San Felippo teaches cooking classes at The Good Life, a local kitchen and cooking supply store. She encounters families who desire to make this type of healthy lifestyle change and begin cooking more at home. Chef Kristina offers some advice to get started. “People who don’t cook at home are hesitant about how to start the process, which begins with buying quality ingredients that are reasonably priced. Once those ingredients are actually in the kitchen, a home cook should have the right tools to get the food prepared for its intended recipe. Having a good chef ’s knife and knowing how to use that knife correctly and safely is such a vital step in being confident cooking in your kitchen. Having good quality pots and pans to use on your stove and in the oven are also very important tools a home cook needs to prepare food correctly.” In her classes, Chef Kristina focuses on teaching participants how to find and select these types of quality ingredients. She suggests places to shop for pantry staples, points out which seafood markets carry the best seafood available, and which stores have good meat selections. “Most importantly,” she says, “I teach people how to find locally grown produce during the Southwest Florida growing season. This supports our local economy and offers the best tasting plant ingredients you can bring into your kitchen because of how recently those products were harvested.” During her cooking classes, Chef Kristina presents recipes she has written specifically for home cooks. “The recipes I am demonstrating at a class need to be accessible and flexible so that a home cook can replicate the results in their own kitchen to bring a delicious and nourishing meal to

their family’s table in a reasonable amount of time.” The reasonable amount of time is key – but cooking at home affords a lot of room for creativity and expression within the home. Check The Good Life’s schedule of cooking classes at goodlifenaples.com. To sign up for classes, call the store at (239) 514-4663. Other options for cooking classes in Naples include: Sur La Table. Going Further – The CHIP Program For some families, medical concerns play a big role in the desire and need to get healthier. Eating at home and making wise choices regarding diet is essential. There are so many resources in our community that focus on lifestyle education, which includes education on preparing healthy meals within the home. The Greater Naples YMCA offers one such program: The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP). Coordinated by Heidi Roderick, the Community Health Manager at the YMCA, this program offers a comprehensive educational plan devoted to healthy and sustainable lifestyle changes. “Families who eat at home more statistically weigh less and become closer as a family. You eat 30% more calories – on average – when you go out to eat,” Roderick points out. “The CHIP program at the Greater Naples YMCA focuses on education and easy healthy recipes that families can prepare at home together.” The program integrates optimal nutrition, exercise, and behavioral psychology to help participants lose weight, get active, and make lasting changes that will contribute to health and wellness. Taking place over between 12-18 sessions (30-90 days), participants learn how to create healthy meal plans, exercise efficiently, and analyze and improve their overall wellness (including BMI, cholesterol, sleep patterns, weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.). For more information on CHIP, visit www.greaternaplesymca.org or contact Heidi Roderick at (239) 963-3777.

ave you ever wished you could feed your family organic foods, but when you check out the price tags your eyes pop out of your head? Yeah, me, too. So I decided to figure out some ways to feed my family of seven organic foods on a tight budget. Here’s what I found out:
1.
Get organized. The more you plan ahead, the easier it is to take advantage of sales, stock up, and wiseuly use what you buy. Weekly meal plans might take a bit of getting used to but they are hugely helpful when you’re trying to save money. In general, I plan meals around family favorites (tried and true!) adding a new recipe, vegetable, or fruit occasionally to see if the kids will enjoy it enough to add it to our favorites list.
ganic items. You can also try Local Harvest to search for farms, farmer’s markets, CSA (community supported agriculture) and more. You can find Naples-area farmer’s market listed on the Neapolitan Family calendar. You can also find an article about farmer’s markets at neafamily.com.
3.
Grow your own organic garden. Sounds hard, doesn’t it? But trust me, if I can do it with my two non-green thumbs, so can you. My husband is usually the gardener in our family but one summer he was traveling and the responsibility fell on me! I found out how easy it is to pull weeds and water tomatoes, carrots and green beans. I finally realized we never bought any weed-killer or pesticides, which meant we basically have an organic garden. Even if you live in a condo you can grow herbs in a pot or have a patio garden.
4.
Coupons and sales! Watch, wait then pounce on those items your family loves when they go on sale or when you

have a sweet coupon. Head to My Organic Coupons. You’ll find a list of companies you can write to, and ask for coupons for their specific products. Combine coupons with sales for some extreme couponing and you’ll be dancing in the aisles! You can also find coupons for Whole Foods on their website at wholefoods.com.
5.
Seasonal Items. Why pay $5/carton for organic strawberries when they can get as low as $1.50/carton during season? Plan meals and snacks around seasonal fruits and produce and you’ll save a bundle.
6.
Stock Up. When you find a good deal, stock up! It’s easy to freeze certain items while you make jellies, jams, etc. with the rest. Can your own spaghetti sauce, carrots, beets, green beans and more from what you grow yourself (sometimes you have way more than you can eat coming in all at once), get a good deal on at the farmer’s market or find on sale at the natural foods market. Canning is easier than it sounds, and you can find a used pressure cooker or borrow one for a weekend. Simply Canning has a wonderful site with many great resources. You can also check out videos on YouTube for how-to’s.
7.
Buy in bulk. Because you’re not paying for packaging and name brands, some organic basics like cereal, grains and beans are much cheaper when dispensed from a bulk container.
8.
Skip the “junk.” Organic graham crackers and fruit snacks cost a fortune. Why not try some carrots and hummus or make your own yummy granola bars to save a bunch of green?
9.
Bake Your Own. We all need a good carb fix now and then. Rather than pay crazy baked-good prices, find a used bread machine for a steal and make your own. It’s so easy these days to get the dough ready, pop it in the machine and just wait while your house fills up with the intoxicating aroma of baking bread. AllRecipes. com has tons of wonderful bread machine recipes that will impress your friends and family. Likewise, bake your own organic treats (think muffins and granola bars) using organic flour, cocoa, oatmeal, etc. that you find for cheap using my tips above! Meet Glennon Melton, the Naples resident behind Momastery Glennon Melton talks to Neapolitan Family about Reckless Truth Telling, Learning to Swim and Lifting Communities Up One Woman at a Time
W
“We don’t need anyone to fix our pain -- we just need someone to witness it.” 44
neafamily.com
hen Naples author Glennon Melton became sober, she decided she wanted to live a meaningful life by helping others. The problem was, none of the nursing homes or shelters where she applied as a volunteer wanted a recovering alcoholic, drug and food addict who had been arrested five times as a part of their organization. They would never know who they were turning away. In her New York Times best selling memoir “Carry On, Warrior,” Melton says that she decided that maybe her public service could be to use her gift of storytelling to tell the truth about her life to others. She hoped that her “criminal” record would give her the “street cred” to reach others. She began by telling her story about her addiction and recovery to her church congregation. The tiny, effervescent woman with the infectious smile and “perfect” family shocked the congregants with her details but they responded in kind with their own stories and tears. Now, through her blog Momastery.com and her acts of service, Melton is helping millions of women change their lives, one “sister” at a time. Melton began blogging on her website Momastery.com seven years ago but it was not until 2011 that one of her essays went viral. Titled “Don’t Carpe Diem,” the essay spoke about not shaming parents for not loving every moment of parenthood. She knew she was on to something when the post received around 500,000 shares and agents and Huffington Post came calling. Since then, it has not been uncommon NEAPOLITANfamily • January 2016
for her posts to be shared more than three million times. The Today Show featured Melton after two such posts: one about her child’s teacher’s anti-bullying techniques and another about gratitude. Melton now has nearly half a million Facebook followers, as well as almost 41,000 Twitter followers and more than 101,000 followers on Instagram, who read daily about Melton’s humorous and poignant struggles and successes with recovery, parenting, and marriage, as well as inspirational thoughts on current events. Perhaps the first time Neapolitans realized that Melton was one of their own was after she wrote an essay about the monkeys at the Naples Zoo. Riding on the cruise around the tiny, unfenced islands where the monkeys live, Melton wondered aloud why the monkeys would not try to escape. “They could easily get to each other’s islands or escape the entire zoo pretty easily,” the zoo guide answered. “Their problem is, they don’t know that they can swim.” This served as an analogy in Melton’s post about feeling alone and trapped in her world, when in reality she already had the skills she needed to change her life. The power of Melton’s writing goes beyond the virality of her posts. The comments posted by the readers reflect how Melton’s wise and witty writing has changed their lives. Her public speaking talent draws in fans during monthly speaking engagements across the country, where Melton enjoys getting to touch and embrace members of the audience while they share their stories. “I see divisiveness on the news, but not on the road,” Melton comments about her time on tour. “People are craving connectedness.” With such a huge audience sharing and CEDR 1003 NeaFamily 1-4 pg Horiz.4_Layout 1 retweeting her every word, Melton tries not
to give in to the fear of writing or saying the wrong thing. “I’m only writing to one person at a time … that one woman in her house,” Melton states. She feels a responsibility to her audience to be completely honest. “I feel I owe them everything. I want to show them my heart and when they hand me theirs, I want to handle it with care.” Melton’s audience shows her their heart not only online but in the thousands of letters that she receives. “One of the greatest honors of my life is opening these one at a time, letting my heart break and soar for each woman, witnessing each story, and then once a month, burning them all to ashes in my backyard,” she recently posted on Instagram. “We don’t need anyone to fix our pain -- we just need someone to witness it.” Melton wanted to give back to her audience with more than words and presence. She created the nonprofit Together Rising, which is operated by volunteers so that 100% of the proceeds go to its intended recipients. According to the nonprofit’s website, the surest way to lift a family or community is to lift a woman. When a woman rises, she brings her people up with her. When she rises, families rise, communities rise, and the world rises. Together Rising exists to heal the world, one HER at a time, the website says. The fundraisers are called “Love Flash Mobs,” where the giving window is open for 24 hours and no one is allowed to donate more than $25. This is so the result belongs to everyone, she explains. The November Love Flash Mob raised $500,000, which was more than twice their goal to fund a new wing on a maternity center in Haiti, which has since broken ground. Recent events with the Syrian refugee crisis 2/18/13 9:45 AM Page 1 prompted the nonprofit’s board to donate

the remaining money to five different agencies servicing refugee camps. To date, the Love Flash Mobs have raised over $2 million. Another important project of TogetherRising is the Holiday Hands project in which donors match themselves to families who have listed their needs on the website. The needs range from someone wishing to give their child a new bike to just needing a little extra money to buy food for a nice holiday meal. Sometimes the requester asks for something of no monetary value at all. Melton remembers one such mom who wanted nothing more than for her special needs daughter to receive letters in the mail. This mom later stood up at one of Melton’s speaking engagements to announce that her daughter had since received over 10,000 letters, and she had answered every one. The relationship that forms offline between the giver and the recipient is deeper than just the exchange, Melton explains. “Relationships change lives.” Melton says that her family here in Naples also will be making some changes for 2016. “My New Year’s resolution is that my family is going to stop watching cable news,” she announces. “The news is no longer about what happened; it’s about pushing people into their corners.” Melton and her husband Craig plan to stay informed by reading and choosing reputable news sources to present current events to their three children. “I want my kids to know what happened, but I want them to hear the balance … I want to teach them not to fear our differences,” she says. “We need to stop being so afraid of each other.” STACY NICOLAU is the Assistant Publisher of Neapolitan Family magazine, a freelance writer, and the mother of 3. the things he sees are not just remembered, they form a part of his soul.
