We were discussing what to do with tweens and teens who are a little too old for summer camp recently in the Neapolitan Family Parents’ Group on Facebook. If you have a 13 or 14 year old, you probably have had this discussion with your friends or family. At that age kids are a little too young for a job and a little too old to need a baby sitter or camp but you don’t want them sitting in front of the TV or playing video games for the summer. So, what’s the solution? How about a summer of service? It’s a simple idea–your child picks a cause they are interested in and finds a way to volunteer their time. The benefits are many and the rewards are great. You’ll find more information on page 40 plus we have a few local organizations who are looking for teen volunteers. If your child had a less than stellar academic year, you may be worrying about their future about now. If you need a little reassurance that there is time for your child to get back on track, please read Ericka Donald’s very personal account of her academic change in attitude on page 14. Her words are reassuring for parents and offer some excellent advice on how you can help your child turn the tide. For other academic advice, check out Collier County teacher Darlene Pellechia’s tips on preventing the “summer slide.” One of the best ways is to encourage reading and an easy way to do that is by signing your child up for a library reading program. You’ll find the details on Collier and Lee library programs on page 43. We’re happy to announce the date for the 2015 Back to School Expo. It will be held Saturday, August 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’re back at the Greater Naples YMCA and we know they can’t wait to show off their amazing new facility. If you’re interested in being a vendor, we’re now accepting vendor applications. You’ll save $50 if you send in your contract before June 15. Drop by our website at neafamily.com for more information and to download a copy of the contract. We’ll have more details to come in July. Happy Father’s Day and Happy Summer!

Note that release dates are subject to change. INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3

Ready for some scary shenanigans? This newest chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. The chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

Crichton. Isla Nublar, an island located off Central America’s Pacific Coast near Costa Rica, now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), a member of the park’s on-site staff, conducts behavioral research on a group of Velociraptors known as Blue, Charlie, Delta and Echo. At the corporation’s request, the park’s geneticists create a genetically modified hybrid mutant dinosaur, known as Indominus Rex, to boost visitor attendance. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the park’s operations manager, and her nephews, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins), are visiting the island when the hybrid escapes and are subsequently caught up in its deadly rampage.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), an 11-yearold girl who’s uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life, but of course, chaos ensues. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive,

the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

HAPPY, HEALTHY FAMILY

By Gregory Keer

Move, Daddy, Move One dad changes his exercise attitude when he realizes his kids are following his “couch potato” example!

S

eeing my two older sons lying motionless and electronically drugged in front of a recent Scooby Doo marathon, I shut off the TV. Immediately, protests arose that would spook any monster the Scooby Gang could encounter. “I haven’t gotten to watch my show!” Jacob, 4, cried. “Today, we’re going biking,” I announced. “I’m too tired,” Benjamin, 7, said, digging himself into the sofa pillows. “How can you be tired?” I said. “You just got up an hour ago and all you’ve done is sit in front of the boob tube.” “What’s a ‘boob tube’?” Benjamin

said, smiling. “Why does it have the word ‘boob’ in it?” His body was atrophying, but his mind was still sharp as a tack. Mine, on the other hand, was losing clarity. “I hate my bicycle,” Jacob shouted. “Let us watch just a little more and we’ll go later,” Benjamin reasoned. “We’ve got a birthday party at noon,” I said, getting weaker. “I promise we’ll go tomorrow,” Jacob offered. We didn’t go then, later, or the next day. The truth is, up until that day, we rarely went biking or walking or anything that would help us reach the category of “active family.” We are busy, what with

school, extracurriculars (which include some sports for the kids), and social events. But we don’t play together as much as I’d hoped. Worse yet, my kids don’t run outside to throw a ball around or ride a scooter when they get a chance. They’d rather watch TV, play a computer game, or (God forbid) read. I’m not alone in worrying about this. The lack of physical fitness among children has led to an epidemic of obesity and other health problems. Many reasons have been spelled out, including the dominance of everything video and all the calories pumped into our processed food. My wife and I have been decent about policing our kids’ diet, but I haven’t exactly

modeled an active lifestyle. If I’m going to beat the allure of the almighty video screen, then I have to do more than lecture - I need to show them the joys of regular exercise. Problem is, I hate regular exercise. Bigger problem is, my kids hate regular exercise. Following that failed attempt to get the kids biking, I still required more incentive to get the old heart pumping. That came in two forms. One was when I played in a three-on-three basketball tournament - in front of my sons - and found that, despite jumping for a lay-up, I had not exactly left the ground. The second motivating factor arrived with my doctor’s recommendation to reduce my cholesterol, which clocked in at a whopping 265. Not that my penchant for dessert didn’t help, but I have a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol. Only medication and exercise could improve things. Add these factors up and I had enough motivation. If I was going to feel good about my physical self, live long enough to see my grandchildren, and show my kids the benefits of exercise, I had to do something.

So I began Operation Daddy Run. After a procrastination period of researching the proper running shoes, working out an exercise schedule, and proudly announcing to my family and friends that I was about to give the Kenyans a run for their money in the marathon, I finally started jogging.

The best gift I can give myself is to make sure I’m healthy and around for many more dad days to come. Pain is what I remember most about that first month. In my 20s, it would take two weeks to get through the initial muscle soreness. Now it took twice as long. But somehow, with ego on the line and my kids paying attention, I persevered. I’m up to 25 minutes of running on three days a week. I’ve skipped a few turns and sometimes run a little less, but I keep going. Occasionally, I hound my sons to

ride their bikes or scooters with me while I run. Sometimes I jog while pushing baby Ari in the stroller just to have him giggle while the wind blows his wispy hair. I’m also mixing in more walks with the kids and a few shoot-a-rounds on the seven-foot basketball hoop in the backyard. I even do some push-ups and sit-ups, which always inspire my kids to do the same or simply to jump on my back to go for a ride. Slowly, I’m changing both my patterns and those of my boys. I still have to get my bike fixed to take them on longer rides and, in the really hot summer weather, I’ll have to get creative, hitting indoor basketball gyms and the like to get them moving. With Father’s Day around the corner, perhaps this is the best gift I can give myself, to make sure I’m healthy and around for many more dad days to come. It’s also a gift for my children, who will hopefully learn from me the value of exercise that will keep them running for a lifetime. COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

By Katie Tanner

Keep Learning Alive This Summer “Keep Learning Alive!” is a resource found on the district website at www.collierschools.com. It is filled with great tips and tools for parents of students in all grade levels.

M

any kids call it the best time of the year: summer break. From swimming to sleeping in, who could disagree with them? I bet some parents are probably looking forward to not having that bedroom battle in the morning trying to get your child to school on time. While I do believe taking a brain break is beneficial, it’s important not to let the so-called “summer slide” take its toll. Research shows that, on average, when students return to school in the fall, they’ve slipped a month behind where they were in the spring. Teachers I spoke with here in Collier County tell me they see the biggest declines over the summer in both reading and math skills. “We see a loss of reading fluency and comprehension as well as basic math facts. Things like telling time, writing in complete sentences with correct grammar, and spelling of basic words,” says Rayna Overmyer, fifth grade teacher at Laurel Oak Elementary. In an effort to battle the brain drain, Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) has developed an online resource entitled, “Keep Learning Alive!” This resource can be found on our district website: www. collierschools.com. It is full of great tips and tools for parents of students in all 12

neafamily.com

June 2015.indd 12

grade levels, from elementary school to high school. We are extremely grateful to the District’s Curriculum and Instruction team for putting together this valuable guide. Some of the highlights include recreational reading lists for all grade levels and lots of fun math activities and games. You will also find information about how your student can access one of the best resources for video-based, online learning for free! In addition to all of the information you will find in our online guide, I surveyed some CCPS teachers for some of their brain-boosting tips. Lisa Ettleman, a teacher at Avalon Elementary, tells me primary grades see a decline on students’ recognition of high frequency words. “Parents can reinforce these by using environmental print. Children can read words around the house, streets, stores, and other places they visit over the summer,” says Ettleman. She also encourages parents to have daily conversations with their children. She suggests asking them about their day - what did they see, do, touch, smell, and hear? It seems simple enough, but these communication skills are vital, especially in the information age. When it comes to math skills, Suzanne Szczepanski, the math coach at Lely High

School, tells me almost all students lose some math skills over the summer. “Many teenagers look for summer jobs; why not choose a math-related job? Teenagers could volunteer to mentor younger children or work at a summer camp. Any activity that requires critical thinking and/or problem solving will help students with math in the long run,” suggests Szczepanski. Finally, I had a few teachers at the elementary level suggest that parents really need to keep working on fine motor skills over the summer: pencil, scissors, and construction skills. Fine motor skills are essential for performing everyday skills like buttoning a shirt or opening a lunch box. Teachers suggest having your child keep a summer journal to reinforce writing skills. Other ideas to work on fine motor skills include playing with building sets and blocks or painting. The important thing to remember is you are your child’s first teacher. By setting aside just a few minutes each day can make a big difference when they return to the classroom next school year. We hope you have a spectacular summer and keep learning alive! COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

By Erika Donalds

Struggling Student? There’s always time for a second chance when it comes to education!

R

ecently I opened up to a journalist about my childhood and my high school years, and confessed that I didn’t even get into college at first. After the story published, I heard from many adults who appreciated knowing that someone who looks to be a success had to go through some tough times to get there. Other parents of slacking high school students were encouraged that all hope is not lost when your teen blows off an English final, guaranteeing an F in the course, like I did my sophomore year. As we near the end of another school year, some of you may be feeling like you could have done better, like your student wasted time or didn’t take advantage of educational opportunities. I’d like to provide some perspective. Thankfully, our school system and our society provide ample opportunities for ‘turnarounds’. Whether your student is in elementary school, high school or out on their own, there is always time to set things right. If your child is a struggling reader, enroll them in a summer reading program, work with them using workbooks or other resources, or find a tutor. If the student is in high school, be sure that they know the full consequences of their actions. Illustrate to them what options they are afforded with a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) vs. a 3.0 GPA. Sometimes just knowing these outcomes can cause a young person to change © Liddle Kidz Foundation their behavior.

In high school, I was class-averse. Meaning, I hardly attended and had a reputation as a “skipper”. I played varsity basketball and one game day my coach found out I was absent, which meant I could not play. After that, I made sure to come to school on game days, but wasn’t motivated to actually do the work. Then, my GPA fell below the eligibility threshold, and I was forced to sit and watch as my teammates lost without me. They still would have lost with me (we weren’t very good) but I hated sitting on the bench. I went from getting C’s and D’s that semester to earning A’s and B’s the next. I always had it in me, but the lack of consequences meant a lack of action on my part. I had a single mother and we didn’t have much money for a good part of my teenage years. I knew I didn’t want to live that way as an adult, so after talking my way into Florida State University, I promised myself to never miss a class. I figured I had skipped enough in high school! I could probably count on one hand the times I missed class in my four years of college. I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in accounting and went on to get a masters, which I completed with a 4.0 GPA. I then passed the Certified Public Accountants exam on my first try – something less than 10% of applicants accomplish. I’m sharing my story with you to give you some hope for your own child’s turn-

around. It may come now, in elementary school, or well after high school graduation. Don’t give up on them. Keep trying to find different ways to inspire them. You never know what will be that one thing – as basketball was for me – that will make them take responsibility for their own success. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve apologized to my mom for all the stress I put her through during my teenage years. I’m so grateful that she never gave up on me. Now I’m used as the example when friends need some encouragement with their children – young and old! We all know a child who needs a little extra attention. Maybe it’s your neighbor’s or maybe it’s your own. I want you to know that your school district is here for you. Reach out and let us know how we can help. Your child will be grateful (and sorry!) in the future! ERIKA DONALDS is a mother of three boys and a member of the Collier County School Board. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a Partner at a New York-based investment management firm. She is the founder of Parents R.O.C.K. and she is on the board of the Florida Coalition of School Board Members. Erika has a BS in Accounting from Florida State University and a Masters in Accountancy from Florida Atlantic University. She and her husband Byron have lived in Naples since 2002. ONE TANK TRIPS

By Andrea Breznay

Family Fun (minus the sun!)

in Sanibel

Sanibel Island, just about a 70-minute drive from Naples is famous for its beaches and shells. During the summer months it’s a great day trip destination for Neapolitan families in search of something a little different. Yes, you’ll find the shells and beautiful beaches but you’ll also find indoor activities and attractions that will please every member of the family. We’ve included our three favorite to get you inside out of the heat or give you a reprieve from afternoon showers.

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Rd., Sanibel 239-395-2233 or 888-679-6450 www.shellmuseum.org Admission: $11 for ages 18 and older; $5 for ages 5-17; ages 4 and younger are free Open 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. daily

W

here can you see an oversized globe, two live mollusk tanks, and a giant squid and octopus on display? Would you be surprised to know that it is the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum? When scanning the exhibits, you’ll find among other things a shell classification wheel, mannequins representing Calusa Indians, a primitive tribe native to the area who incorporated shells into their daily life, and shells from various regions and in various shapes. While in the Hall of Shells, kids can pick up a scavenger hunt sheet. When they locate each indicated shell, they simply turn in their completed sheet to museum staff for a souvenir to take home. Kids will also make a beeline for the Children’s Learning Laboratory, designed for children ages 2 and older. Young visitors to this area will enjoy the sea-life theme presented in bright colors. Once inside, they can play games and puzzles, peruse the hands-on displays, and view the creatures in the live (not touch) tank. There’s also a ten minute video designed just for kids. True shell fans (and adults) will want to view the Shell Museum’s two videos, Mollusks In Action and Trails and Tales, (both thirty minutes), which generate quite a bit of 16

buzz in both the local media and with conchologists. The videos were the creation of Joyce Matthys, a volunteer education docent at the center. It is the museum’s hope that people will visit the museum to learn about shells and mollusks before hitting the beach.

CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife)

3833 Sanibel-Captiva Rd., Sanibel 239-472-3644 • www.crowclinic.org Admission: $7 (18+), $5 (13-17), 12 and under free May 1-December 14 ( Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) December 15-April 30 (Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) he Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), operates one of the country’s leading nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation facilities and teaching hospitals on its 12.5-acre campus on Sanibel Island,

T

Florida. Each year, over 3,500 sick, inured and orphaned wildlife patients receive care from CROW’s staff veterinarians, clinicians, 250 volunteers and students enrolled in CROW’s wildlife medicine program. CROW’s visitor education center is designed to connect all audiences with wildlife in our care while maintaining their privacy. The experience is a self-guided tour that focuses on the life-cycle of our patients from the time they are admitted until their ultimate re-release into the wild. Patient health is imperative; federal and state laws do not permit visitors to view patients directly but visitors can view patients through live feed “critter cams” with views inside the hospital and outside rehabilitation areas. Daily wildlife presentations include a 45-minute wildlife lecture, meeting animal ambassadors and Q&A session. Other programs include a monthly lecture series, “ Wildlife Walk” that include a behind-thescenes tour of the campus and “Lunch and Learn” with CROW’s hospital director.

“These additional programs at CROW are designed to improve the visitor experience and give an intimate look at what we do while educating guests about Southwest Florida’s wildlife,” says Dr. Linda Estep, Executive Director. For seasonal hours and program schedule please visit www.crowclinic.org

Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) 3333 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel 239-472-2329 • www.sccf.org Admission: $5 for ages 17 and older (to Nature Center) Hours: 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Hours for rest of year vary; contact SCCF for specifics.

Turtle Tracks isn’t just the name of an ice cream. It’s also a popular program sponsored by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation where you can learn about the sea turtles that nest on Sanibel and Captiva. SCCF docents narrate a Dolphin & Wildlife Adventure Cruise given by Captiva Cruises that offers an opportunity to view dolphins and other wildlife up close as you cruise the Pine Island Sound. A visit to SCCF, which welcomed 15,000 visitors last year, is a great way to while away the time. There’s a touch tank and several aquaria with live turtles and snakes. Nature Center programs are $5 for adults, free for children. Avid gardeners can visit their native plant nursery. If you want to get up close and personal with a butterfly, be sure to visit the butterfly house, which is free of charge. This outdoor screened room features butterfly host plants and many types of butterflies flying directly overhead. There are walking trails at the Nature Center and several other SCCF preserves.

Precious Cargo Academy Named Center of the Year 2015

P

recious Cargo Academy is the recipient of the Center of the Year Award through the Florida Association of Child Care Management’s (FACCM) Awards in Excellence program. The goal of the awards program is to recognize, honor, and support quality early learning centers throughout the entire state of Florida. Centers can be nominated by the families attending their school. Once nominated there is a detailed application process that looks at the center’s curriculum, community awareness and involvement, innovative initiatives, staff, philosophy, director’s education and experience, and overall commitment to excellence in the field of early childhood education. Precious Cargo staff have continued to improve the services offered including adding a Kindergarten Readiness Program for parents, extending hours, reaching out to further improve the support of the surrounding community, and making improvements to the building, classrooms, and outdoor playgrounds. PCA’s curriculum ensures that students excel academically but also that they have a balance of social-emotional growth, freedom for creativity and expression, and a spiritually nurturing experience. The goal of PCA is to make sure that children create positive experiences with learning, and build relationships with their peers and classroom teachers. PCA offers parental involvement activities throughout the school year including Parents Night Out, Family Dinner Nights, Spirit Nights with Chick-fil-A, Scholastic Book Fairs, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events, and offer tutoring to our students who need it. This summer PCA is offering a summer camp program for children aged five years through 10 years of age. Additionally, starting in the 2015-2016 school year, PCA will be extending services to include an after school program for elementary aged children. SUMMER FUN

By Sara Marchessault

Too Old for Summer Camp?

Try a Service Project or Volunteering!

I

t’s finally happened. The kids are no longer excited about summer camp. They may be complaining that camp is for little kids or that none of their friends are going. We parents may agree, but still want our kids to have a summer with some structure. Thankfully there are alternatives. One in particular can be incredibly beneficial to adolescents. That is the summer of service. You may have heard of “service learning.” It’s a current buzzword in education. The idea is that students will engage in a service project as part of the regular curriculum and reflect on what they learn as it relates to the class. More and more service learning is popping up in classrooms around the country, particularly at the high school and college level. Instead of sending your older teen to summer camp, a service project can give their summer structure and engage the mind in an experience that might be different from how they learn during the regular school year. In addition, your son or daughter starts to develop marketable skills. Even volunteer roles that seem simple, such as selling concessions or emptying trash cans at a local festival, or sorting donated goods at a food bank require elements of working on a team, following directions, and using math skills in the real world. Volunteer work can be added to a resume and discussed as examples of experience during job interviews. Depending on the service project, your child may have the added benefit of moving in new circles and meeting people from different walks of life. You just never know when an experience will lead your son or daughter to a career choice they had never thought of, a network connection that someday might result in a great internship or job, or even simply a chance to shine on his or her own. So, how can you get started? Decide. This seems simple, but sometimes talking to teens CEDR 1003 NeaFamily 1-4 pg Horiz.4_Layout 1 2/18/13 9:45 AM feels complicated, right? What if instead of arguing about

whether or not he or she heads to camp, you asked: What would you like to do instead? Engage in a conversation where you each lay several options on the table. If your teen wants to relax and hang out with friends, you can negotiate how he or she will manage time over the summer as you select a service experience. The first step is just initiating the conversation and putting it on the table as an alternative to summer camp. Next comes the exciting part: selecting a project. You can choose an organization that already offers work to volunteers, such as a residential home for the elderly, homeless shelter, or service organization (see side bar for a few suggestions).

Check out what’s going on in the community. Research the onlne calendar at neafamily.com for festivals or concerts that will need volunteers. Remember that even though an event may be scheduled for just one day, sometimes volunteers are needed weeks in advance. Finally, one more possibility is to create your own service project. Does your son or daughter have a cause he or she feels passionate about? Remember the BP oil spill in April 2010? There were volunteers in my community that took on the task of sharing information about how we could all help. Volunteers passed out fliers with details for where to send financial donations and encouraged people to donate their hair to make special tubing that soaks up oil. Document the service. Once a project is selected and time starts to be donated, it’s important to start writing about the experience (or keeping an audio or video log). When it’s time to refer to these service experiences in an interview or on a college entrance essay, the details will have already been captured. Encourage your teen to record what they do, how they do it, and what they are learning. This will help them recall the service experience in greater detail in the future. This summer why not encourage your too-old-for-summercamp tween or teen to offer service as an alternative? Both your child and the community benefits!

ummer Break from school is here! We’re all looking forward to camps, barbeques, family vacations, and beach fun. Traditionally what is an excellent time for kids and families to relax and take a break from hectic schedules can easily transition into the dreaded summer slide. Numerous studies have indicated that there is a learning loss, especially in reading, when students do not participate in learning activities throughout the summer. It’s simple and makes sense: Students who read during the summer maintain, and even gain, reading skills. On the contrary, students who do not read during the summer often slide backward. Students who do not read in the summer can lose up to two levels in their reading. If you ask your child’s teacher how you can help your child from slipping this summer, most likely the first thing your child’s teacher will tell you is to have your child spend time reading every day. When students do not read during the summer, the first month to two months of the new school year often are needed to

provide remedial instruction and reteach what was already taught during the previous school year. For these students, it can be difficult to catch up to their peers who are already months ahead. Parents express confusion or frustration when their child’s teacher explains the child is reading below grade level expectations and having difficulty with comprehension skills. When parents say their child was doing fine with reading at the end of the previous school year, teachers often need to explain that valuable reading skills because they were not engaged in reading throughout the summer The good news is the summer slide can be avoided. There is strong research that proves reading is the best way to avoid slipping backwards and losing what was gained during the school year. Reading should occur for at least 20 minutes every day if you have a primary aged child in grades K-2 and 30 to 60 minutes each day for older children. Taking advantage of summer educational opportunities and daily reading throughout the summer can help.

Take advantage of technology Students love technology and enjoy being online. Encourage your child to take a break from online gaming and visit a reputable, quality reading website. Collier County students can use the district’s website: www. collierschools.com. Students can click on Students Online and also log into Angel Learning for numerous learning activities. You can also sign your child up for one of the local library reading programs (see page 43). Several other reading websites worthy of exploring are: http://www.starfall.com http://pbskids.org http://www.tumblebooks.com http://www.storyplace.org www.bookadventure.com Make the only slide your child takes part in this summer be the slide at the playground or pool. Keep reading this summer! DARLENE PELLECHIA is a Collier County Public School teacher at Osceola Elementary and mother of three.

Twenty minutes of reading per day will help your kids retain what they learned during the school year!

Locals Brewing Up Success Microbreweries are cropping up all over Southwest Florida and while the beer is just for the adults, at some breweries, the fun is for the entire family.

T

he popularity of microbreweries and craft beer exploded in 1990s, launching an industry that has become firmly entrenched across the country, and continues to grow each year. But the craze bypassed us here in Southwest Florida, until just three years ago, when the Naples Beach Brewery opened its doors in 2012. Since then, locals have been sprinting to catch up with the rest of the country. With at least eight breweries and brew pubs currently operating, and five more slated to open by the end of 2016, we suddenly are spoiled for choice. One Naples man decided to capitalize on the new beer scene in Naples. Jason LeMay operator and cofounder of Southwest Florida Brewery Tours. During a vacation trip to Asheville, NC, LeMay went on a bus tour of several breweries, and the seed was planted. “I thought it was a great idea,” he says: an idea that could be transferred to the burgeoning craft beer market in SWFL. He sold his Jeep, bought a van, and a new business was born. “I want to educate people” about the brewing process and beers, says LeMay, who is described on the SWFL Brewery Tours website as a “self-proclaimed craft beer enthusiast and a native Southwest Floridian.” And he is doing just that. Tours take place on Saturdays, and typically encompass three breweries. Guests spend 45 minutes to an hour at each brewery, during which time they tour each facility, with both Jason and brewery representatives providing an enlightening education in the art of brewing. The highlight of the tours is, of course, the beer samples. Guests then have the opportunity to buy a pint or two, and a growler to take home. LeMay provides a cooler to keep purchases cold on the way home. Tours are $35, plus an online booking fee. Southwest Florida Brewery Tours has been a success to date, as LeMay has sold out every tour he offered during the past three months. Scheduled tours are limited to nine people, but LeMay can accommodate more numbers for those wishing to arrange a private event. He plans to double the number of tours for next season. Sounds like the perfect Father’s Day gift for that beer lover in your life. What could be better than an afternoon of sampling his favorite 44

beverage alongside fellow beer enthusiasts, while being chauffeured all over Southwest Florida? For more information, or to schedule a tour, call (239) 682-9140 or visit www. swflbrewerytours.com. ABOUT THE BREWERIES While we weren’t able to visit all of the breweries and brewpubs in Southwest Florida for this article, we were able to sample a few. Try them out for yourself. Fat Point Brewing Planning for Fat Point Brewing in Punta Gorda started just two years ago, and the early success of the brewery and tap room has surprised brewmaster and co-founder Bill Frazer. Fat Point starting distributing beer in August 2014. The taproom, which also serves food, opened this February. The brewery currently is running at full capacity, and Frazer says demand has been twice what Fat Point can produce. But the brewery is expanding to meet that demand, and continue to grow. Frazer notes that every restaurant in downtown Punta Gorda is serving Fat Point beers. Located about two minutes off I-75 at exit 164, Fat Point takes “going local” to a whole new level, flavoring one of its beers with limes from trees located on brewery property, and seasoning its pizzas with basil grown in one of the manager’s gardens. The welcoming beer garden at the front of the brewery is furnished with chairs and tables built by boys from the AMIkids Crossroads home and school for teens who have had several failed foster care placements. Being part of the community is a priority for Fat Point, as is being family friendly. “On the weekends, we have whole families bike here,” says Frazer. Families share a pizza in

the taproom, and parents sip their favorite pint while the kids enjoy a soda and play Giant Jenga. Dogs, too, are welcome in the beer garden. Not all local breweries are childfriendly, so it’s best to call first. Opening days and hours vary widely among the various facilities, so check their websites before you visit. Fort Myers Brewing Company Fort Myers Brewing Company opened its doors in February 2013, and like Fat Point, is experiencing high demand for its products. Located in an industrial park off of Daniels Parkway in Fort Myers, the brewery already is expanding to cope with its popularity. On a recent visit to FMBRew with SWFL Brewery Tours, a cornhole tournament was underway, and a crowd gathered outside at the back of the brewery to drink beer and enjoy the beautiful May weather. While FMBrew does not serve food, food trucks park outside so you can have a meal while you enjoy the beers on tap. The brewery hosts a food truck rally on Thursdays. Our guide on the tour mentioned that he started working at FMBrew as a volunteer. Volunteers are welcome, especially for the events the brewery puts on celebrating each season in the year. While you work for free, you do get to sample the merchandise, and some volunteers eventually earn their way onto the payroll, according to our guide. You can find FMBrew beers on tap at many local restaurants, and at Fort Myers Miracle games. LEIGH ANN NEWMAN is a writer and editor and the owner of ABC Swim School in Naples.
