THIS MONTH:

Happy Father’s Day

The school year ends and we get to celebrate our favorite men–June is a good month! This month we’re celebrating dad with a humorous look at fatherhood from Anna Futrell (page 8) and seventeen awesome suggestions on celebrating dad (page 38). We’re also celebrating summer with our list of twenty Florida museums (lots of great day trips in that list!), where you can cool off in Collier (page 18), plus easy and cheap water activities for kids (page 40). We have another article from Anna on creating a summer “bucket list” as well. Her suggestions can help you get the summer organized so you don’t get to August and wonder where the days went. On pages 44-45 you’ll find my article about my trip to Cuba. It had long been a dream of mine to visit the island and last fall I got my chance. It was a special trip and I learned so much about Cuba and her people. If you’re thinking about a visit, I encourage you to schedule a trip soon–it’s a special country with friendly people, beautiful art, and amazing music. And, yes, we know that it’s just the end of school but we’re announcing our Back to School Expo. This year’s event is scheduled for August 13. We’ll start taking booth reservations in early June so if you’re planning on participating, contact us for a contract so you can register early. The earlier you register, the better your booth location. More details will be coming in the July issue. Happy Father’s Day to all Neapolitan Family fathers and grandfathers! Have a wonderful June.

NEW MOM’S CORNER

By Anna Futrell

Three Cheers for Fatherhood! A Collection of Humorous Tales and Timely Tidbits for New Dads

F

ather’s Day is June 19, and in honor of our yearly celebration of the fathers in our lives, I thought I would dedicate this column to brand new dads. The challenges facing new moms can seem insurmountable, yes, but new dads face pressures and stresses as well. I spoke with a few of the dads in my life: my own dad, my husband, and my father-in-law, along with several other local dads. I asked them to tell me stories from when they were new dads, and I asked them what advice and encouragement they would give to expectant fathers or fathers with new babies. I hope you enjoy what they had to share. New Fatherhood: Tales from the Front “I remember coming home from the hospital after Micah was born (at about 3:00 a.m.) and lying in bed unable to sleep because of an overwhelming sense of responsibility for this new life that God had entrusted to Sue and me. It motivated me to find some much needed resources (James Dobson’s Handbook on the Family was especially helpful),

as well as a mentor – a couple a few years ahead of us who were doing a superb job with their own children.” –Jim, pastor and dad of two (ages 32 and 34) “The first time I bathed my daughter, I was wrapping her up in a towel, and she pooped right in my hand. My wife captured the moment on camera!” –Max, dad of two (ages newborn and 2) “I can remember the first time I changed my son’s diaper. I set him on the edge of our white comforter. I wiped his bottom, and as I reached for a new diaper, I saw that another round of poop was pouring out of my son – all down the side of our white comforter. I learned quickly that the odd piece of furniture in the nursery called a changing table was one of the essentials of parenting.” –Derek, dad of four (ages newborn, 2, 4, and 5) “Due to work schedules, I’ve watched my children alone on a regular basis since they were infants. As a result, the bond I’ve developed with my children is so strong.” –Neal, dad of three (ages 4, 7, and 10)

“My wife had a C-section with our daughter. The first night in the hospital I got up to change her diaper. I felt so proud, and so I held her up to my wife and said, ‘Finished!’ As I held her up, her diaper just fell off!” –Rob, dad of one (age 4) “I learned the hard way that you never lift a baby above your head or face right after a feeding. Similar to the old wives’ tale about no swimming for 30 minutes after eating, never lift a baby over your head or face for at least twenty minutes after a feeding. You will get a vomit shower.” –Tony, dad of two (ages 13 and 14) “I stuck a suction cup toy – meant for the high chair – on my forehead to make my daughter laugh. It left a giant round mark on my forehead for almost a week.” –Kris, my brother-in-law and dad of one (age 3) Words of Wisdom for New Dads and Expectant Dads “Be ready! Have your ducks in a row. Complete any projects you are working on, build the crib, and set up the nursery. My wife had our first daughter two weeks early, and I wasn’t expecting it at all. Just be ready.” – Tom, my father and dad of two (ages 28 and 32) “Keep saving towards retirement, even if it seems impossible. Put any monetary gifts you get after the baby is born into a college savings account.” –Jimmy, my husband and dad of one (age 20 months) “Make good friends with caffeine. You’ll need it.” –Nick, dad of one (age 3)

read, etc. And put the kids to bed as early as possible for as long as possible.” –Tony, dad of two (ages 13 and 14)

“Take your daughter on daddy/daughter dates, and have your wife/significant other take the boys on mommy/son dates.” –Jeremy, dad of three (ages 5, 8, and 13)

“For expectant fathers, don’t take the job of taking photos during and after the birth. It’s just not a good idea to be the one responsible for those photos.” –Jim, my father-in-law and dad of two (ages 30 and 34)

“There is great pressure on young dads to provide their children with an all-expense paid college education, and this often competes with the financial objective of having a successful retirement. Young families should continue to make funding their retirement the priority.” –Rob, dad of two and Certified Financial Planner (kids aged 13 and 15) “Once you become a father, you get used to getting hit in the crotch. New dads – you are now a jungle gym at all moments that your children are awake. Also, be prepared to be a pack mule for everything that the family needs, plus a kid or two. Never lie to your children; just tell them an appropriate level of truth. Remember that your child will think food tastes better off of your plate, even if their plate has the same food. And know that kids learn via the scientific method. For example: kid picks up an egg, throws an egg and it breaks. Kid needs to retest to confirm results, throws another egg. Yes, children are such a blessing, but blessings are not always easy.” –Adam, dad of four (ages newborn, 3, 6, and 8) “For the dad who works outside the home and the mom who stays at home, once you get home, take care of the kids from dinner time to bed time. I found those times to be very special and important for bonding with my children. I couldn’t be there with them during the day, so that time between dinner and bedtime was great for playing, laughing, and cuddling. The added benefit is that mom gets some time to herself to relax, exercise,

are doing.” –Terry, foster/adoptive dad of one, currently (age 2) Father’s Day Gift Guide for New Dads Wondering what to get the new dad or expectant dad in your life for Father’s Day? We’ve got you covered! Here are a few unique ideas from some experienced dads in our area: • “Beer.” –Scott, dad of two (ages 20 months and 3) • “A high quality pair of earplugs. And a good garage or workshop.” –Jimmy, my husband and dad of one (age 20 months) • “A raincoat for when you change diapers.” –Jim, my father-in-law and dad of two (ages 30 and 34) • “Guilt-free time for one of his hobbies.” –Adam, dad of four (ages newborn, 3, 6, and 7) • “Power tools – that he might not have time to use for awhile.” –Jared, dad of one (age 2 years) • “The book What to Expect When Your Wife is Expanding. It’s hilarious and fun.” –Derek, dad of two (ages newborn and 3) • “Take a picture of your baby wrapped up in the shirt he was wearing when his child was born. Make it a tradition every year; it’ll be fun to see how much your kids grow each year.” –Todd, dad of two (ages 2 and 4) • “Uninterrupted bathroom time. And food – it doesn’t matter what kind, just any food.” –Ryan, dad of 2 (ages 20 months and 6) • “The mission-critical baby carrier, which is durable and designed for dads. I want to have another child just to use this military-style baby carrier.” –Tony, dad of 2 (ages 13 and 14)

Advice for New Foster or Adoptive Dads “On-the-job training is vital; don’t be afraid to ask questions. I had no idea how to hold a baby properly when we got our first child. When you foster or adopt kids, you often do not have any time to prepare. With fostering, I might wake up the next day with three kids, and then by that night we might have five! I try to be consistent, spend time with them, and show them patience and grace. I also spend a ton of time in prayer at night and in the morning because I need God’s strength, wisdom, and patience to do a great job. Finally, spending lots of time with your kids means giving up a lot of your hobbies, such as fishing, golf, watching sports, etc.” –Joel, foster/adoptive dad of three, currently (ages 1, 2 and 5) “Have a friend’s toddler punch you in the face every day for two weeks. If you don’t hit back, you are a probably good candidate for fostering. My son punches me almost every day during one of his tantrums; and as we are learning, it’s due to his brain’s wiring being addled from the drugs his mother did during pregnancy. Understand your life will change drastically. Your own free time becomes virtually non-existent. You’ll be required to visit therapists, search the internet, read books, etc., just to try and handle situations you’d never expect. Times may get tough. Make sure you have friends and family to lean on. Remember you are doing something for kids that most people can’t or won’t do. So remind yourself often why you are doing what you

I hope you found these stories and pieces of advice as fun and hilarious as I did. Happy Father’s Day to all of the new dads in Southwest Florida!

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

By Julie Sprague, Collier County School Board

Avoiding the Summer Slide Research shows that students experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Read on for tips on how to help your child avoid the slide this summer!

S

ummer vacation is always an exciting time for students and families to spend time together and have a break from school, but it’s important for students to continue to practice their academic skills, even after the school year has ended. During the summer months, many students lose proficiency in reading and math in what’s known as the summer slide. According to statistics from the National Summer Learning Association: • All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. • Most students lose about two months of

10

neafamily.com

grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months. Low-income students also lose more than two months in reading achievement, despite the fact that their middle-class peers make slight gains. Luckily, there are ways to avoid this phenomenon and keep learning alive throughout the summer and well into the next school year. One of the most important things a family can do is participate in recreational reading. Putting aside a few minutes a day dedicated to reading with your child can make a huge difference during the summer months. The District’s Keep Learning Alive resource guide includes summer reading lists with recommendations of grade-level appropriate books. This includes lists for middle and high school students. Here are a few activity ideas from the resource guide: • Look for things around the house for your child to read. It could be the newspaper, pamphlets, magazines, books, or websites linked on the school district website.

While reading to or with your child, stop every now and then to ask questions such as how or why something happened. • Ask your child to explain, analyze, and summarize things read. • Read a variety of text including fiction and non-fiction. • Read and discuss newspaper articles. Students can always practice math facts in problem sets but why not make it fun? The Keep Learning Alive resource guide contains information about where to find engaging math activities online and even ones you can do as a family. For example, here’s one suggestion combining math and the classic card game, “Go Fish”. Prepare flash cards from 0-13 (3 sets of each number). Play “Go Fish” to add numbers up to 10. (Ex: Sally has the number 4, so she asks her mother for the number 6 because 4+6=10.) The resource guide also includes writing, science, and social studies tips and activities. You can find the entire Keep Learning Alive resource guide with even more information on www.collierschools.com. NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2016

Gardening at Poinciana Elementary School T

hursday is always a special day of the week the kindergarten class of Joanna Campanile and Janell Matos at Poinciana Elementary School (PES). Kindergarteners don their aprons and slide on their gloves, ready to get to work in the early morning sun. This is a handson learning experience for students that didn’t exist a year ago. Campanile and Matos always noticed PES had flower beds, but they hadn’t been used in a long time. The same for some old logs. It gave the teachers an idea—a repurposing project. “We figured, we have the resources here,” says Campanile. “What’s better than learning with hands on experiences?” After receiving a grant through Champions For Learning, the class began the garden. The original goal was to give students an opportunity to see flowers grow in their natural habitat, instead of in a cup in their classroom. In a few short months, it’s grown a lot bigger than they first anticipated. The garden now has lettuce, carrots, kale, peppers, pumpkins, pineapples, cucumbers, onion, peppermint, and strawberries—just to name a few. Kindergarten classes recently enjoyed homemade pesto, created using garlic and basil picked straight from the garden. Students were involved throughout the entire process. They helped spread soil, move dirt, and plant the original batch of seeds. Now they are assigned different tasks like watering plants or pulling weeds and are learning about why it’s necessary. They journal about the experience, sometimes writing about what they see, or draw pictures. Soon enough, the garden had tons of visitors and a few unexpected ones of the insect variety. They quickly realized they had an opportunity with their new friends and dedicated a row of the garden entirely to butterfly weed and flowers. The life cycle of a butterfly is part of the curriculum for many grades, and students have enjoyed seeing eggs, baby caterpillars, and butterflies in the area. Right now, the garden is filled with chrysalises that will eventually hatch into butterflies. These teachers realize that young minds will be curious—many students have never seen caterpillars or chrysalises up close and personal before. They asked for some help from the school’s fifth grade Pelican Ambassadors who monitor the garden every morning. The Ambassadors can explain metamorphosis to curious students and make sure the insects are kept safe. As you can see, the garden is filled with learning opportunities for students of all ages, even ones with unique circumstances.

“We realized it was going to be helpful especially for the English Language Learner students,” Campanile says. “They can learn words, but when they actually get to see the word, smell it, touch it, we’ve noticed it makes a big difference.” With the school year coming to an end, the teachers received an additional grant to continue the garden with a new batch of students. This year, the kindergarteners planted a batch of pumpkins that take about a year to grow. When they’re ready to be picked, Campanile and Matos will give them to each first grade class so the former kindergarten students can see what came of their hard work.

RACHEL RECOMMENDS

Book Reviews

RACHEL’s

favorite books, Three Times Lucky, because both main characters’ only wish is to be reunited with their mothers. The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing, by Shelia Turnage. This is the second book in a series. I really enjoyed the first book, and as everyone knows, I love series! The Infinite Sea, by Rick Yancey. This is the second book in a series— the first book is The Fifth Wave. It also was a birthday present. The Honest Truth, by Dan Gemeinhart. I like the story line because it reminds of Out of My Mind where a girl is determined to get something. In this book, a boy is determined to get something. My Summer of Pink and Green, by Lisa Greenwald. Since I’m starting middle school soon, I will probably be reading some harder books, so I want to do an easy summer beach read. I can’t wait to spend the entire summer reading books that I don’t have to get approved by my teacher first!

7. 8.

Summer Books I

always want to buy new books, but my mom says that I will soon grow out of the books I have already. So she wants me to read the many, many books on my bookshelf. I think she’s wrong, but she’s the one who has the money, sadly. To get more books, I’ve decided to read even more this summer. I know my column is called “Rachel Recommends,” but I’m going to give you my top ten list for books to read this summer. It’s sort of like recommending books, but I’m recommending books I have yet to read.

1.

Once Upon the End, by James Riley. This book is the third and last book in a trilogy. I really want to read this book because I enjoyed the last two books with the humor and anticipation. Counting By 7s, by Holly Goldberg Sloan. I chose this book, first of all, because my friend recommended it to me.

2.

But I’m interested in it because it seems like a book about a girl who is a genius and shy. Story Thieves, by James Riley. The author also wrote the Twice Upon a Time series, which I liked very much. The Short Seller, by Elissa Brent Weissman. This book has different story line than most books. The author also wrote Nerd Camp, a Sunshine State book. I got to meet Weissman in March at the Southwest Florida Book Festival in Fort Myers (see picture), and she signed my book, which makes me want to read it even more. The Fifth Wave, by Rick Yancey. A friend got it for me for my birthday. It looks like something different than the things I’ve read before. Some people think it’s just a movie, but it’s also a book. Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech. It reminds me of one of my

t is baby season for wildlife in Southwest Florida, and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida is hosting its first Wildlife Hospital Baby Shower to help patients at the von Arx Wildlife Hospital. The shower is taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is seeking the support of Southwest Florida to fulfill the need for supplies by asking community members to send or to bring a gift item or gift basket to help provide the hospital’s youngest patients with the best possible care. The wildlife hospital is registered with Amazon Wish List or a list of needed items can be found online at www.conservancy.org/ babyshower. Monetary donations are always appreciated and can be made online at www.conservancy.org/helpwildlife. The baby shower will support patients of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital through the donation of funds or supplies needed to care for injured and orphaned native wildlife. Needed items range from food products to medical supplies, and donations may be dropped off at the Lutgert Commons Area outside of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s Welcome Center. Those unable to attend the event still have the opportunity to show their support by donating items online from the von Arx Wildlife Hospital’s Amazon Wish List, which will be sent directly to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Donors will receive one free admission to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s 21-acre Nature Center, and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to join wildlife rehabilitation staff on an animal release or baby bird re-nesting. “The von Arx Wildlife Hospital will treat hundreds of baby animals during the spring and summer months, including various birds, mammals and reptiles,” said Joanna Fitzgerald, director of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital. “Any donation is greatly appreciated as we rely 100 percent on donations to fund our wildlife hospital.” The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is located at 1495 Smith Preserve Way, Naples, 34102. FATHER’S DAY

By Kimberly Blaker

A Day for Dad

Make This Father’s Day One to Remember

F

athers play a significant part in children’s lives. They influence children’s selfesteem and school performance, are important role models, and among other meaningful roles, make funloving playmates. Father’s Day is just around the corner; so don’t be caught scrambling for the perfect way to show you care. Try some of these ideas, and make it a special day just for Dad that both of you will enjoy.

Video Surprise Make a “World’s Best Dad” video that he’ll treasure for years to come. Brainstorm your own ideas, or try some of these. On videotape, share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions including sports trophies or equipment that tell who he is. Finally, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you.

King for the Day It isn’t everyday that dad is waited on hand and foot. Offer to be his loyal servant for the day, and bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper; lie out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve his beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment. Memories of Dad Purchase a scrapbook, and create a record of memories about your father and you. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together and other memorabilia from family vacations and activities such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those times together with your father.

of shelving materials and brackets, wall racks and ceiling hooks, and storage crates. Then spend the day helping him to get it organized while catching up on old times. World’s Greatest Let dad know that he’s the greatest 365 days a year! Give him a “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mug, t-shirt, book cover, book marker, wallet card, or other trinket that he’ll see or use regularly. Sports Buff’s Surprise Take your dad for a sporting good time. Play a game of golf, tennis, or basketball, go fishing at the river’s edge, or enjoy a paddle around a lake. If being a spectator is his thing, purchase tickets to his favorite sporting event such as a baseball or soccer game, boxing match, or auto race.

A Man to Remember Get your creative juices flowing, and write a poem for your dad. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped you to become the person you are today, and what he is to you. Then print it on stationary, matte and frame it.

Weekend Getaway Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a mini cabin at a state park, and spend your weekend enjoying nature hikes, sight seeing, fishing, boating, playing cards, and taking it easy together.

Musical Moment Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, enjoy a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert-in-the-park.

Father’s Day Feast As the old adage goes; the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, treat dad to a mouth-watering meal on the bar-be-que. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters, and don’t forget the grilled potatoes, fresh green beans or asparagus, sweet corn, potato salad, and last but not least, his favorite dessert.

Togetherness Takes Two Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out his attic, basement, or garage? Give him a gift

It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was. 38

Treat Him Like a King – What better way to show your appreciation for all his hard work than to indulge him? Give your father a gift certificate for a professional massage, which will be sure to please. Just the Two of Us – Put together a photo collage of you and your father. There are many ways to do this. Find instructions at your nearby craft store and create a Decoupage photo collage, keep it simple with a multiphoto frame, or purchase a unique 3D Photo Collage frame which can be found through a number of stores online. Take a Stroll – Enjoy a peaceful walk together in the park or the country. Better yet, gather your bikes or roller blades, hit a scenic bike path, and enjoy the summer breeze. Certificates of Appreciation – Show Dad you appreciate his hard work by returning the favor. Make coupons that say: “In appreciation for all that you do, Dad, please redeem this certificate for a hassle-free car wash by me!” Other favors include sweeping out the garage, mowing the lawn, or any other task for which he normally takes responsibility. Catch a Flick…..or two – Treat your dad to a movie fest. Rent a couple newly released videos or some of his long time favorites,

SUMMER FUN

I

n the dog days of summer, kids love to cool off by playing in water, but they get tired of the same old sprinkler or kiddie pool. Here are eight easy and inexpensive DIY outdoor activities to keep kids of all ages both occupied and cool!

Soda Bottle Sprinkler 1. Turn a two-liter soda bottle into a sprinkler! Take a clean, two-liter plastic bottle and drill holes all over the sides of the bottle using a handheld drill. You can use a smaller bit and drill lots of tiny holes, or use a larger bit and drill fewer holes. Next, attach a hose connector to the end of a garden hose. Attach the bottle to the hose by screwing it into the connector. Turn on the hose and let the kids play! This sprinkler is fun just laying on the grass, or toss the hose with the attached sprinkler over the swingset or a tree branch to make a “shower.” Liquid Chalk Paint 2. For outdoor art that is a step above sidewalk chalk, try making your own liquid chalk paint. First, purchase jumbo-sized washable chalk from your local dollar store. Now you will need to break up the chalk into a powder. This can be accomplished by either putting the chalk into a sealed plastic bag and pulverizing the chalk with a hammer, or “grate” the chalk using the smallest holes of a cheese grater. Add the powdered chalk to a food storage container, and mix in water. About one-half cup of water per jumbo size piece of chalk makes a nice consistency. You will have a few chunks, but the mixture should be mostly liquified. Repeat the process with different colored chalk until you have several different colors of chalk paint, each in it’s own container. Give the kids paint brushes and let them paint the fence, concrete porch, or sidewalk, then turn the hose on their creation to wash it away and begin again.

Squirt Gun Target Practice 3. When the kids get tired of squirting each other, set up targets for them to aim at! One way is to simply draw targets with washable sidewalk chalk onto a fence. Draw several circles, starting with a small “bullseye” in the center, then add three or four more circles around the bullseye, each one bigger than the last. Assign each circle a point value and NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2016

let the kids compete to see who can hit the most points! Plastic disposable drinking cups also make great targets. Line up plastic cups side-by-side onto a deck railing or stack upside down into a pyramid shape and shoot away! Water Pinata 4. Let the kids release some pent-up energy and cool off with a pinata filled with water! Take a plastic grocery sack and fill about halfway with water. Using the handles of the bag, tie the water- filled bag over a tree branch. The bag doesn’t need to be sealed. Let the kids hit the water bag with tennis rackets, plastic bats or a cardboard wrapping paper tube. What a great way to recycle those plastic grocery bags! These water pinatas won’t last long, but getting wet is the point of this activity, so who cares? Ice Excavation 5. Freeze plastic toys into a blocks of ice for kids to excavate! To prepare this activity, fill plastic cups or small food storage containers about two-thirds full with water, and then drop one or two small toys into each container. Freeze each filled container until the water is a solid block of ice, then remove the ice block and place outside in a large plastic bowl or metal baking dish. Now, let the kids

NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2016

figure out how to get the toys out of the ice. Offer options such as squirt guns filled with warm water, salt, or cups of warm water. Older kids can chip away at the ice with metal forks or butter knives. For a fun twist, try tinting the water blue with food color and using ocean-themed toys, or pair green water with tiny dinosaur toys. Colored Ice Cubes 6. This is a great one for toddlers. Take an ice cube tray and add several drops of food coloring to the bottom of each section of the tray, and then fill the entire ice cube tray with water. Once the cubes are frozen, dump the colored ice out into a baby pool or plastic bowl filled with water. Toddlers will enjoy playing with the colored ice, and watching it melt and turn the water pretty colors. Since the water is tinted with food coloring, ice cubes will be safe to nibble on. Of course, parents should always closely supervise children when near any water! Water Race Track or Lazy River 7. Kids love to watch stuff float down a stream! Here are two ways to create a mini river or water race track. For a race track, purchase a short length of a gutter (the kind on roofs) from your local home improvement

store. Set the gutter up against the seat of a lawn chair in the backyard so that the gutter slopes down to the ground. Place a garden hose at the top of the gutter and turn on the water. Kids can float leaves, dandelions, bathtub toys down the waterway. You can even set up two “tracks” side-by-side and hold a race! Or, make a lazier river by shaping aluminum foil into a gutter shape and put directly on the grass in a place where the ground slopes gently. You can use the hose to create the waterway, or let the kids pour water down your river with a cup or bucket. Sponge Balls 8. Make fun “sponge balls” from dollar store sponges. Cut two rectangular sponges lengthwise into four pieces each, then stack the strips into two layers of four pieces each. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the midpoint of the stacked sponges. “Fluff” and pull the sponge strips until you have a ball shape. To play, give kids a bowl or bucket of water to dip the sponge balls into. Wet sponge balls are great for tag, target practice, or just tossing back and forth between kids! SUMMER FUN

A Summer Bucket List for Your Family During my adult life, I have worked toward the goal of pursuing adventure in the day-to-day. Yes, this may mean a trip overseas, but it also could mean taking a new route during my morning run, learning a new skill, reading a book of an often overlooked genre (e.g. biography, mystery, etc.), or taking a day trip to a state park. I have found that adventure awaits us everywhere we go if we are willing to pursue it. Fortunately for me, my husband views life through a similar lens, and we are attempting to create a culture of adventure in our home as we raise our daughter. Every summer, I create a comprehensive summer bucket list. It includes goals, trips, skills, books, restaurants, trails, activities, and other adventurous and fun pursuits. We place the list in a central location – on our refrigerator, usually. As we check off items on our list, we write a couple sentences about our experience in a blank journal dedicated to the summer, and we might stick a picture or two (yes, we still print out pictures!) in the pages of our summer journal. The journal is then archived on a shelf in our home. Are you searching for a way to add structure to your family’s summer? Why not create your own bucket list? There are lots of ways to create a bucket list. You can decide to make one for your entire family, or have each family member create their own (obviously, there will be some crossover on all family member’s lists). And you definitely don’t have to do it in the same way we do! There are lots of free printable templates online. The best ones I’ve found have been on Pinterest, and I typically type “Printable Summer Bucket List” in the search field to discover some beautifully designed list-style templates. One such template I found is by Lara at Overstuffed Life. Her templates can be found at: www.overstuffedlife.com. The neat thing about Lara’s templates is that you can customize and include them in an individual binder for each member of your family. For families with several children, particularly ones who are older, this style of bucket list can be very motivating and effective. If you’re like my family (we have one toddler), you will probably want to select a simple list-style, one-page summer bucket list template. I found a great one by Jennifer at Little House Studio, and a printable version can be found at: http://littlehousestudio. net/blog/2015/05/22/hip-hip-hooray-its-summer-vacay. 42

What are some things to include on your bucket list, and how do you go about creating one? The sky is the limit! Let creativity, adventure, and excitement be your guides!

Here are a few tips and ideas: •

Own it. Have your kids take ownership of the summer bucket list. Let them assist in the decision making and direction of the list. Obviously, this would exclude pre-planned trips and mandatory activities, such as specific summer reading selections and music/sports lessons. Having your children take ownership helps assure buy-in to goals and more family excitement over fun adventures.

• Read. Write out the books you plan to read. This might include some readaloud family selections, and it might include the books your child has on his or her summer reading list. Regardless, take time to research some selections that you might not otherwise choose, or that have perhaps been recommended to you, and include them on your summer bucket list. • Learn. Learn a new or unfamiliar skill, or prompt your children to research and learn a specific skill. This might include building, planting, and growing container gardens, or it may have to do with a specific cuisine (or any cuisine at all). Perhaps you might set out to encourage your kids to be responsible for one part of a meal every day of the week. Your children might enjoy an online drawing or painting course. Get into the research part of the equation by visiting the library, searching YouTube, and talking to experts around town. Have your children commit to the process, and set specific goals for each week of the summer.

Registration Now Open!

One-Day Adventures. Write down several day trips you’d like to take as a family. State parks are great options. They often feature several activities appropriate for an array of ages, including boat tours, trails, or historical sites. Try out some tourist activity you’ve always wondered about, such as an air boat ride, or visit a new town within a couple hours’ drive.

• Eat. As a family, brainstorm specific local restaurants you’d like to try. Maybe it’s a food truck that’s been recommended to you, or maybe it’s a type of cuisine that is out of the norm for your family. Whatever the case may be, target a handful of local establishments to try out over the course of summer break. • Go. Write down any and all pre-planned trips and activities. Even though camps, vacations, and music lessons, etc. already have been planned out, it is important to chart the course and write them down. That way, as a family, you can recall what was significant about each experience. • Make. Brainstorm a few crafts to do throughout the summer, or select a day of the week and designate it as craft day. Think about involving another family in your neighborhood. Your family might choose to get started on the process of making Christmas gifts for extended family members. You may want to include specific crafts to make on your bucket list, or you might want to set out with the goal of making eight specific items by the end of the summer. •

Write (and Draw). Encourage your children to write each day, even if it’s a few sentences. Related to the concept of the bucket list, your children might want to have a designated time and space

that they create for daily reading and writing. Alternatively, you may want to encourage your children to write a chapter each week and have it culminate in a family read aloud at the end of the summer. Your child may want to create a play or theater production, which certainly would involve daily writing. If you have young children, consider purchasing a simple drawing course, such as ART START Animals. Have them tell stories through drawing by creating a picture first and then writing about it. As a family, write down memories and details about your summer adventures. • Celebrate. Pick some wacky and fun holidays to celebrate over the summer. Research some of the National Days Of … and pick your favorites. Take photos, and write about your experiences on these holidays. For example, June 7 is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, and we will be taste testing and rating three different chocolate ice creams, and then publishing our results in our summer journal. June 24 is National Swim a Lap Day, June 29 is International Mud Day, July 1 is International Joke Day, and July 29 is National Lasagna Day – to name just a few of the many! As you create your bucket list, be sure to share it with our Facebook community. We want to see what is on your summer list. Pursue adventure, take lots of pictures, and have fun!

TRAVEL

By Andrea Breznay

I

Hola,

Cuba! 44

neafamily.com

n the 18 months since the Obama administration lightened restrictions on United States citizen’s travel to Cuba, a record number of Americans have visited the country. Because Cuba is just 90 miles from Miami, many Neapolitans may be wondering whether a visit to Cuba should be on their travel agenda. My answer depends on the age of your children, how adventurous they are, how much they’ve traveled, and what their interests are. For the most part, I’d advise against a Cuban trip if you have children younger than about 13 or your older kids aren’t that adventurous. But for older teens and adults, Cuba is a destination I would put close to the top of travel “must see” lists. I traveled to Cuba in September 2015 under a “people-to-people” program visa. The purpose of the trip was classified as a cultural exchange and as such we were required to be engaged in “meaningful interactions between U.S. citizens and citizens of Cuba.” U.S. law required that we adhere to a schedule of activities that had been predetermined. For older teens and adults who are interested in the culture, this wide variety of activities is educational and fun. For young kids or teens who are used to constant social media or like to sleep late, this isn’t going to be the trip for them. Leave the kids at home and travel with your spouse or a friend instead. Restrictions on Cuban travel have changed since my trip and U.S. citizens are now able to travel a bit more freely although most trips still must be largely educational in nature. Despite the lifting of the restrictions, I would advise a tour because making arrangements for hotels, restaurants, and attractions is difficult without the right connections. The good news is that there are plenty to choose from and more cropping up every day. My group flew from Miami to Havana via a chartered jet. Because we were guided by our group representative, our arrival at José Marti International Airport was uneventful although exiting the airport to a huge throng of people waiting for their arriving relatives was a bit of a shock. Our little group of 20 Americans got a lot of attention as we found our way to our tour bus. Our first stop was the Hotel Nacional which is, quite simply, stunning. Built in 1930 and with a history as diverse as Cuba itself, you truly do feel like you have stepped back in time. We waited for our rooms in the hotel bar where bartenders in immaculate white uniforms make one strong mojito after another. The dark paneled room is filled with drawings and photos of the movie stars, politicians, and other luminaries who have stayed at the hotel. It’s well worth a visit even if you don’t stay at the hotel. Outside there is a lovely courtyard that leads to a view of the Malecon, the broad esplanade, roadway and seawall that stretches for five miles along the Havana coast. At almost any hour of the day or night, the Nacional courtyard is buzzing with music, conversation, activity, and visits from the peacocks who make their home on the property. My room was small but very clean and comfortable with a large window overlooking the courtyard. There was a mini bar (with real Coke instead of the extra sweet Cuban version!), a television (CNN was the only American channel), and a compact bathroom. The room never really got cool despite cranking up the air conditioning. The walls are pretty thin as I learned later that night. I had just fallen asleep to be woken up by very heavy breathing. I laid in my bed terrified, afraid to leave the bed to find out who or what was in my pitch black room. After a few minutes I finally realized that the breathing was coming from the room next door. dinator, and Neici, our Cuban tour guide, at the front of the hotel. We traveled in a comfortable, air conditioned coach with plenty of cold, bottled water. Most of our lunches were served at small, family-run paladars and usually included live music and dancing. Tour Itineraries: On our agenda over the five-day visit: • A visit to a Havana cigar factory • A tour of Finca Vigia (Hemingway’s Cuba retreat) • Lunch and a quick walk around Cojimar (the setting for Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea) • A stop at Plaza de la Revolucion • Several hours in Christopher Columbus Cemetery • A tour of The Yorruba Association Museum (dedicated to the practice of Santería) • A visit to a primary school in Old Havana • Time to wander the Used Booksellers’ Market (great place for souvenir books or posters) • A private concert with Vocal Luna, Cuba’s award winning allfemale chorale group • A lecture and discussion with a Cuban expert on the history of U.S./Cuban relations. • A tour of Old Havana • A day at Las Terrazas, a UNESCO site known for its beauty • Tours of a medical clinic and an organic community garden • A visit to Fusterlandia, the home of “The Picasso of the Carribean,” Jose Fuster • A performance by one of Cuba’s most respected dancing troupes Most of our evenings we were on our own to dine at local paladars (private restaurants usually set up in the owner’s home), enjoy music at a variety of clubs and concert venues, or simply to walk the Mallecon. The 3 youngest members of our group — two 20-something brothers on the tour with a friend — went out every night to different clubs and became our experts on the nightlife of Cuba. We quickly learned not to expect coherent answers from them until about 11:00 a.m. To their credit, they made the bus on time every morning. One of the highlights of the trip was an evening of music from the Grammary award-winning Buena Vista Social Club. Another evening, several members of the group went to the famous Tropicana and enjoyed the over-the-top, iconic show. Contradictions Cuba was definitely everything I had hoped for and then some. I felt like I was entering a time capsule of sorts, a place where time stopped in 1960. But mostly, it’s one contradiction after another: crumbling buildings that are at the same time majestic and beautiful, natural beauty NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2016

right near ugly Soviet-era buildings, and abundant food for tourists while citizens struggle on rations that consist mainly of rice and beans. There is definitely poverty but because the struggles are almost universal you don’t see marked differences between the classes. All Cubans are assured of the basics: rations of food, healthcare, and education through high school. But beyond those basics, there hasn’t been much to hope for, although that is changing as Cubans are allowed to keep income they make from small businesses. Private home ownership is on an upswing and loosened restrictions on travel mean that more money and goods are coming in from the U.S. and other western countries. The Cuban people are a big part of the contradictions I mentioned earlier. Many of the state employees we encountered were unmotivated to say the least. Because they know they are assured of a salary and their rations (about $20 per month salary no matter what the job plus basic food items like beans and rice) there is no incentive to work harder or go the extra mile. The difference between the quality of service and of the food at our state-run hotel and the private paladars where we dined was night and day. At private restaurants, the food was delicious and creative, served by attentive staff. At our hotel, finding someone to bring coffee or refill a water glass was almost impossible. The hotel food was barely edible despite being plentiful. On the other hand, we met many musicians, artists, and small business owners who were brimming with creativity and excitement. One of the most interesting Cubans I met was a young man who drove one of the vintage cars you see in so many of the photos of Cuba. Luiz lived in Sarasota, Florida, for much of his life, brought to the U.S. by his father. In his teens he returned to Cuba to live with his mother and now in his early 30s, he struggles to make a living as a driver. He leases his car from the government and is responsible for all repairs and gas. He told me that he works about four days of the week to pay for the lease. The rest is his profit. If the weather is bad or the tourists not interested, he loses money that week. At the same time, he seemed genuinely excited about the changes to his country and happy to see Americans visit. He said he hoped his father would be one of them. A special moment of our trip came on our last day in Cuba, September 11. We visited the recently opened U.S. Embassy where we proudly took group photos in front of the large American flag. It’s very likely that Cuba will be changing dramatically in the next few years and I am glad to have seen it when I did. My visit sparked an even greater interest in the country and I have been devouring books and listening to Cuban music since my visit (see below for suggestions). A visit to Cuba isn’t your typical vacation, it’s much more of a learning experience where you can be immersed in a totally different culture if you’re willing. Cuba, vuelvo! (Cuba, I’ll be back!)
