Mental Health is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. National studies indicate that two to four children in every American classroom struggle with a social emotional condition. Without treatment, grave consequences and challenges can develop. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

When you’ve lived in Naples for awhile, you assume you’ve either been to or heard about most of the attractions. For this issue, we went in search of a few undiscovered treasures to give you some ideas for spring break fun if you’re staying close to home. Two I hadn’t heard about were the REVS Institute and The Bird Gardens of Naples. You’ll find the scoop on these two plus 3 other suggestions on pages 42-43. It was fun for me to pull the article together and I especially enjoyed trying out The Conservancy Brunch and Boat last week. A tranquil ride in an electric boat and a delicious brunch at Gordon’s–what’s not to like? Have I mentioned before how much I enjoy my job? In other spring break articles, Stacy Nicolau researched our readers suggestions to bring you 14 spring break destinations (page 39). All are in Florida and most are within two hours of Naples. Between the two articles, we think you’ll be able to plan either a spring break vacation or an outing that your family will love. One last spring-themed article appears on page 44. Lara Krupicka has tips on giving your calendar a spring makeover. It’s timely advice for me, that’s for sure. I find myself saying yes to too many things during “season” and by March, I’m ready to pare my schedule and take some quiet time. This month we’re welcoming Erika Daniels as a regular contributor. Erika is a new Collier County School Board member and she’s agreed to bring us a monthly article updating readers on news from the school board. We had lunch recently and I was impressed by her willingness to consider input from the community. You’ll find her first article on page 14–note the email addresses for school board members. If you have something to share, by all means let the board members know what you’re thinking! You can’t have March without a St. Patrick’s Day celebration and we have the local events you will want to attend on page 19. Plus, you’ll find holiday treats and activities suggestions on celebrating with your family on page 18. Have a wonderful spring break.

REEL LIFE WITH JANE
By Jane Louise Boursaw
Family Movie & DVD Reviews N
ew on the big screen for kids and teens in March is a giant whale causing havoc, a little alien looking for a home, a classic princess with a glass slipper and lots more. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s new in theaters and home entertainment this month. Note that release dates are subject to change. CINDERELLA
THE HEART OF THE SEA
PG for mild thematic elements In Theaters 3/13 • Ok for Kids 7+ Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels We all know the story: When young Ella (Lily James) tragically loses her mother, her merchant father remarries and Ella welcomes new stepmother Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. When Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family as she’s relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella. But Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words, to “have courage and be kind.” When she meets a dashing stranger in the woods (Richard Madden), she’s unaware that he’s a prince, but her life begin to change when the Palace sends an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball. A glass slipper, a few mice, a pumpkin and a fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) all play into the rest of the story.
PG-13 for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material • In Theaters 3/13 Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 4.5 of 5 Reels It’s the winter of 1820, and the New England whaling ship Essex is assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, with an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s book “Moby-Dick.” But that’s not the whole story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate seeks to bring the great whale down. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth as first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker as the inexperienced Captain George Pollard; Cillian Murphy as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT Not yet rated; likely PG-13 In Theaters 3/20 • Ok for Kids 13+ Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels This second movie in the “Divergent” series raises the stakes for Tris (Shailene Woodley) as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris and Four (Theo James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite.
8

March 2015.indd 8
Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Tris and Four face one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world. Miles Teller, Jai Courtney, Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts and Zoe Kravitz also star in this movie directed by Robert Schwentke and based on the book by Veronica Roth.
TRACERS PG-13 for some intense violence, perilous action, sexual content and language In Theaters 3/20 • Ok for Kids 14+ Reel Preview: 3 of 5 Reels After he crashes his bike into a beautiful stranger named Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos), Cam (Taylor Lautner) is introduced to her crew -- a team that uses parkour to pull off heists. Hoping to alleviate his deepening debt to a violent crime gang, Cam quickly joins the group. As the stakes get higher with more dangerous side ventures, the payouts get bigger and Cam must use every ounce of his skill to stay alive as the crew’s heists grow more daring with each job. Directed by Daniel Benmayor, this movie also stars Rafi Gavron, Adam Rayner and Sam Medina.
HOME PG for mild action and some rude humor In Theaters 3/27 • Ok for Kids 7 Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels When Earth is taken over by the overlyconfident Boov, an alien race in search of a new place to call home, all humans are promptly relocated as the Boov get busy reorganizing the planet. But when one resourceful girl named Tip (Rihanna, who also contributes a song) manages to avoid capture, she finds herself the accidental accomplice of a banished Boov named Oh (Jim Parsons). The two fugitives realize there’s a lot NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2015

The Letter Machine Rescue Team helps support children’s language and vocabulary skills, which is awesome since research has shown that vocabulary development, along with a grasp of grammar and language structure early on, is linked to school readiness, as well as reading and math achievement.
DESPICABLE ME 2: 3 MINI-MOVIE COLLECTION Rated PG • On DVD 3/10 • Ok for Kids 5+ Reel Review: 4 of 5 Reels The mischievous Minions return in three new mini-movies. In “Puppy,” when Kyle is unwilling to behave like a real dog, the Minions go looking for one who will. “Panic In The Mailroom” is what happens when a suspicious package arrives and the Minions are totally unprepared. When Saoirse and Ben’s mother mysteriously disappears into the ocean, the two children go on an epic journey to find out the truth about her. HAPPY, HEALTHY FAMILY
By Michele Ranard, M.Ed.
Create A ‘We’ In Your Family 10 Easy Ideas for More Connection
I
n light of modern technology, connecting as a family should be simpler than ever. Yet hectic work schedules, distractions (electronic and otherwise), or other demands can get in the way. Some of us may even go days without a single hug…days! We Need a ‘We’ More Than a ‘Wii’ Clinician Michael Ungar discusses the need for our children to feel noticed and loved in order to embrace “we” instead of simply “me” in The We Generation: Raising Socially Responsible Kids (De Capo, 2009). Ungar says parents often attempt to connect through expensive material things, by becoming too permissive, or even by overprotecting. But the key to connection is to offer opportunities for compassion because “Give a child a chance to connect, and she will.” To connect, we need to nurture. Compassion, Happiness, and Con-
nection Psychologist Richard Weissbourd, author of The Parents We Mean to Be (Mariner, 2010) warns we frequently miss opportunities to connect and teach valuable moral lessons to our kids. “Too many of us are raising children first and foremost to be happy and we are failing at that project—rather than instilling in them what the novelist William Faulkner thought we as a species needed to prevail: ‘a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.’” 10 Easy Ideas for Greater Connection
1.
Laugh More. The latest research supports that laughter can decrease stress hormones and boost the immune system! As Daniel Pink points out in A Whole New Mind (Riverhead, 2005) “laughter is a social activity—and the evidence is vast that people who have regular, satisfying connections to other people are healthier and
happier.” Tell jokes, watch comedy, and most importantly, model a good sense of humor yourself.
2.
Play More. Backyard football or Monopoly at the dining room table may register as old fashioned “just in the movies” scenarios reserved for “other” families, but they aren’t. Get outside. Touch each other. Fall in the mud. Laugh out loud. It’s not time spent being “unproductive.” It is life.
3.
Be More Soulful. Whether you attend religious services or not, be intentional about discussing and modeling the values of your faith. It is quite easy to get caught up in the realm of the physical world so it takes conscious effort on your part to provide balance.
4.
Show & Tell. Habitually ask your child what they

think they do well and then have them demonstrate. For my son, it has always thrilled him to show off his ability to effortlessly walk on his hands. What is it for your child? Writing cursive? Pouring juice without help? They love showing you new skills and strengths. Your glowing response makes them feel ten feet tall.
5.
Leave Work Behind. Take as many family vacations as your vocation allows. The opportunities which will spring from time away from the grind relaxing with your children are pure GOLD and will add up to memories for a lifetime. No one at the end of their life wishes they had just taken less vacations.
6.
Eat three. Set a new rule about family meals together: everybody is expected at the dinner table at least three times a week. While it may not always be realistic to squeeze in three dinners, think about Saturday breakfasts, Sunday brunches, or Wednesday late night cookies and milk. At our house, we have Italian Friday Nights where we are often joined by a
few of our children’s friends.
7.
Time Matters. Give them your time. So often we underestimate how much our kids want to spend moments with us. It’s important to carve out family time even if you get the message their friends have passed you up on the influence scale.
8.
Listen to highs and lows. Implement this easy best/worst exercise into every meal-time conversation. Ask your child to identify their best and worst daily moments. (Don’t use this time to lecture if their ‘worst’ happens to be failing an exam.) Open your heart and connect with the feelings they express. Share their joy! Cry with them over defeat. If you haven’t tried this, you may be surprised at how much you’ll learn about your kids’ inner lives.
9.
Create a “We.” Rally your children to help with a project. Whether it is helping an elderly neighbor with gardening, painting the family room, volunteering at church, or organizing the garage, join forces and see
that the fruits of your labor extend way beyond an afternoon of hard work.
10.
Write Love Notes. Words are powerful and sometimes easier expressed on paper. Fill the page with dreamy thoughts, your wishes and hopes, and what makes them awesome. Leave the note on their pillow, and know it will touch them deeply whether they mention it or not. MICHELE RANARD is passionate about helping families live more emotionally healthy lives. COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Katie Tanner
Middle School Matters Collier seventh graders will experience college readiness program this semester
W
hen you think about middle school, many would describe it as one of the most awkward times in your life. Raging hormones, social cruelty – this time of transition is certainly not something I am looking forward to as a parent. However, I do know that it is becoming one of the most important times in a student’s life to prepare a student for college or a career. Yes, middle school matters a lot when it comes to your child’s future. Researchers say grades, attendance patterns and engagement at the middle school level are among the strongest predictors of high school graduation and college-going patterns. “This is a crucial time to get students engaged in school and their future. If your child is set on a certain career, the time is now to start exploring options,” says Dr. Kamela Patton, Superintendent of Collier County Public Schools (CCPS). To get students engaged in their future, CCPS is implementing a new college and career readiness experience for seventh grade students this semester at all 10 middle schools. The first phase included a visit to the Florida CHOICES website: www.flchoices.org. The website is run by the Florida Department of Education and is a free resource for all Floridians. It provides assessments for interests, skills, and values as well as information on careers and postsecondary education. Earlier this year, students completed what’s called an “Interest Profiler” assessment. They answered 60 questions about their likes and dislikes – questions like “How would you like to work in a biology lab?” or “Would you like to write books or plays?” Their answers then generated a list of characteristics that hopefully describe their interests. Some examples would be artistic, social, investigative, and realistic. The profile then matched the student with careers that best fit those interests. Schools will be guiding students through the next step in this experience starting in March. It entails a series of video workshops each targeting different topics. The first will focus on the anticipated
graduation requirements for high school, including class options and programs available at the high school level. The goal is to give the middle school student the tools needed to create a four-year high school plan. The three other workshops include information on available financial aid and scholarships, career and technical education opportunities, and college majors and campus life. Each video aims to give students just a taste of what’s available to them. The final phase is probably the most exciting for the students – a field trip to a real college campus! Each school will take a trip to Florida Gulf Coast University during the month of May. They will get a tour of campus, including a look at dorm life. For some, this will be their first visit to a college campus. I encourage parents to keep up the momentum at home. Strike up a conversation about your child’s career interests around the dinner table. If you are planning a family trip sometime in the near future, don’t be afraid to infuse a bit of college atmosphere into the vacation. Definitely don’t be afraid to talk about the cost of post-secondary education and ways to save. For example, our high schools offer various opportunities to earn college credit before starting college. The bottom line – it’s never too early to start thinking about the future. The choices your child makes now can certainly shape opportunities later in life. KATIE TANNER is the Communications Specialist for Collier County Public Schools and can be reached at (239) 377-0180.

COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

Getting involved with your Collier School Board
Reach board members by email The most efficient way
to reach your board members is by email at the following addresses: • Kelly Lichter District 1 lichteke@collierschools.com • Kathleen Curatolo District 2 curatoka@collierschools.com • Erika Donalds District 3 donale@collierschools.com • Julie Sprague District 4 spraguju@collierschools.com • Roy Terry District 5 terryro@collierschools.com

hen my son started kindergarten here in Collier County, I had quite a bit of interaction with his teacher. Occasionally I spoke with the principal and office staff, but like most parents I stayed within the realm of my neighborhood school. However, I began to realize that decisions made outside of our school were greatly affecting his classroom experience. I learned that choices of textbooks, tests, courses and the school calendar are among those made by the district administration and approved by the five elected school board members. Your Collier school board members run for office according to the district where each one lives. A list of schools by district can be found at www.collierschools.com/ board/members/memberdistrict.asp. School board business meetings are
held monthly on the second Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public and you can speak for three minutes on any agenda topic or make general comments. They are also live on web or mobile at www.collierschools.com and broadcast on Comcast Channel 99. The agenda topics for each meeting are posted online at the Collier Schools site one week in advance. I also post meeting topics and opportunities for feedback on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ voteerikadonalds Your involvement is crucial to your own students’ academic achievement, but it is also important for the success of our district as a whole. Please join me, my fellow board members, our teachers and many other parents so we can ensure a high quality school system for our students!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
By Alexa Bigwarfe
F
or those of us with children, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations shift from where to find green beer to where to find the best parades and how to make green shamrock crafts. Never fear, we’ve got some fun treats and activities for St. Patrick’s Day right here! How familiar are you with the origins of St. Patrick’s Day? St. Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland, is not only the impetus behind the Christian movement in Ireland, but is also known for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Well, figuratively anyway. There are actually no snakes in Ireland, and it is believed there probably never were. However, St. Patrick led the movement to convert the pagans (who often used snakes in their symbols) to Christianity, thereby driving the “snakes” out. Did you know it’s actually a three leaf clover that brings the luck. St. Patrick used the three leaf clover to
explain the holy trinity to the pagans, which is how the clover became the flower of Ireland. In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday, a day for praying for missionaries around the world and for spiritual renewal. Since the United States has a large Irish population, it is widely celebrated here, with shamrocks, pots of gold, leprechauns, and all things green. Why the leprechaun? There is no reason that leprechauns are associated with St. Patrick’s Day, beyond the fact that St. Patrick’s Day is associated with all things Irish. Leprechauns are male fairies in Irish folklore - often an older, tiny man who is particularly mischievous. According to the tales, the leprechauns are very rich and have many treasures, including gold that they hide in secret places. If you catch a leprechaun, they have to take you to their treasure. But, if you take your eyes off of them, they can vanish instantly. Fun activities include hunts for clovers, scavenger hunts, coloring activities and other printable activities, or attending the Naples St. Patrick’s Day parade. Perhaps the most fun activity of all is to take your kids on a magical leprechaun hunt (in your house) using mystical Leprechaun Munch to catch those sneaky fairies. Leprechaun Hunt with Leprechaun Munch To catch a leprechaun with this munch, just spoon out some and wait for a crunch. Since Lepre-

chauns love the color green, it won’t take long, but while you watch and wait, you can snack along! When the kids aren’t watching, replace some of the munch trail with gold coins... the calling card of the leprechaun! How to make Leprechaun Munch Add equal parts of each ingredient. Crumbled pretzel sticks Green marshmallows from Lucky Charms Coconut M&M’s (Only green and white) Rice Chex cereal Green Sprinkles Add all ingredients into a plastic bag. Shake well! Another easy and festive snack to make with your kids and take for school snack or teacher treats: The Shamrock Snack Ingredients: Regular pretzels (small 3 for each shamrock) Stick pretzels (1 for each shamrock) Chocolate bar - melted (may need more than one depending on the size.) Green M&Ms Directions: 1. Make your “shamrocks” by arranging the regular pretzels (3 each shamrock) 2. Place a straight pretzel as a “stem.” 3. Take the melted chocolate and drop a big spoonful in the center, ensuring that the 3 pretzels and the stick pretzel are bonded together. 4. Place an M&M in the center while the chocolate is still soft and let it cool - preferably overnight.

arch is here and spring break is coming quickly. If you haven’t yet made plans and last minute airfare isn’t an option, consider one of these Florida destinations for a great vacation. We asked our Neapolitan Family readers to give up their favorite and best kept secret (non-Disney) Florida spots that might just be the change of pace your family is looking for. The list includes a wide range of price points and most of the locations offer Florida resident rates.
Beaches GASPARILLA INN This classic Florida resort in Boca Grande, recommended by Stephanie Dixon of Naples, claims to embrace guests in “tranquil civility” the moment you step onto its lush grounds and into the elegant lobby. Think classic golf club and luxurious beach chic style with jackets required in the dining room. While this translates into a pricey per night stay in the hotel, suites or cottages, the trade-off is a 95-mile drive from Naples which means your vacation can start in less than two hours. The inn’s Family Spring Break Package offered during the month of March features teddy bear tea parties, sand castle contests, laser tag and “Drive-Inn” movies in addition to adventures including paddle boarding and geocaching. The resort is pet-friendly with an onsite dog park. 500 PALM AVENUE, BOCA GRANDE, 33921 (877) 403-0599 WWW.THE-GASPARILLA-INN.COM

SIESTA KEY BUNGALOWS We may think the beaches in Naples are special, but did you know we are less than two hours away from the very best beach in the country (according to Dr. Beach)? Siesta Key, near Sarasota, is known for its “gorgeous, powdery beaches,” says Valerie Foley of Naples. The Siesta Key Bungalows have screened-in porches to enjoy coastal breezes with a full kitchen and enough room for a family. Close enough to Sarasota to enjoy dining, museums and nightlife, Siesta Key beats to its own drum with live music, shopping, dining and drum circles. 8212 MIDNIGHT PASS ROAD SIESTA KEY, 34242 (888) 5-SIESTA WWW.SIESTAKEYBUNGALOWS.COM neafamily.com

TRADEWINDS ISLAND RESORT This pet-friendly group of beach resorts boasts that kids will never be bored on the 20-acre property. Neapolitan Karen Kreiger recommended this resort because there are many family activities, five pools and a kids’ camp, and older kids can learn to surf or fly with a jet pack. What makes this resort unique to our list is that it has been designated by the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities as an autism-friendly business. Rooms can be equipped with door alarms, outlet covers and cushions for furniture corners and the staff has received sensitivity training. Parents also can drop off their kids for special sensory activities. Guests on special diets can expect glutenfree offerings in all dining outlets onsite. 5500 GULF BLVD., ST. PETE BEACH, 33706 (727) 367-6461 WWW.TRADEWINDSRESORT.COM
SUNDIAL BEACH RESORT AND SPA Reader Jennifer Townsend claims that this resort is good enough to go back to every year. Located on beautiful Sanibel Island, the resort and spa keeps kids entertained with programs such as the Sundial Buddies Camp and Sanibel’s Sea School for Kids. Florida residents enjoy a 15% discount, but the “Stay Two Nights, Get the Third Free Plus $50 Gas Credit” package may be the best bet for this resort that is only 40 miles from Naples. 1451 MIDDLE GULF DRIVE, SANIBEL ISLAND, 33957 (239) 472-4151 WWW.SUNDIALRESORT.COM

THE FORGOTTEN COAST Reader Jason LeMay suggested the Forgotten Coast as the location where his family makes its vacation memories. It may sound a little sad that this panhandle destination identifies itself as “forgotten” but that may be exactly what season-weary Neapolitans are looking for. The Forgotten Coast website offers 101 things to do in the nearly 20 towns along the coastline, including more than 250 free and low-fee festivals that fill up the entire year’s calendar. WWW.FORGOTTENCOASTLINE.COM
HUTCHINSON ISLAND Reader Mandi Goins let us in on a secret so good that the destination’s own website jokingly begs you not to tell your neighbors about it. Situated on the Treasure Coast between St. Lucie and Martin Counties, Hutchinson Island is a rustic beach that has been left mostly in its wild, natural state. While the island has a few small grocery stores and oceanfront accommodations, nearby Stuart, Jensen Beach and Fort Pierce have dining, museums and galleries should you crave a bit more modern civilization. WWW.FLORIDASHUTCHINSON ISLAND.COM
The Florida Keys HAWKS CAY RESORT Once you drive into Hawks Cay Resort in Duck Cay (in between Islamorada and Marathon Key) you will not have many reasons to leave the property. This resort
features spacious condos in addition to the hotel with a lagoon-style resort pool, a family pool with a pirate ship and a small saltwater lagoon perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding or snorkeling. The resort property also houses a marina where you can park your own boat or launch into a water adventure such as a snorkeling trip to a local reef. There is an ice cream parlor and a natural dolphin habitat where a variety of interactive dolphin experiences can be enjoyed. While this destination can get expensive, the sunsets and dolphin watching are free and you can cook meals in the condos to help defray the cost. (A hands-on dolphin adventure is costly, but considered by many to be an experience of a lifetime.) This resort, a favorite of several of our readers, has been known to have offers on Groupon that are less than half the regular room rates. 61 HAWK’S CAY BLVD, DUCK KEY, 33050 (888) 395-5539 WWW.HAWKSCAY.COM
CHEECA SPA AND LODGE The landscaped drive into the beach-front resort recommended by Christina Elliot of Naples reminds one of a cool jungle that ends at a cozy lodge and nine-hole golf course. The family pool here always is filled to the brim with children so adults may prefer the adult pool and cabanas with televisions adjacent to the spa. The manmade beach features a gorgeous lantern-lit fishing pier and unlimited complimentary use of the bikes, kayaks, catamarans and paddle boards.

State Parks & Camping Grounds MYAKKA RIVER STATE PARK Just a short drive from Naples is reader Trish Richardson’s ideal place to go camping with her family. One of the oldest and largest state parks, Myakka River State Park has two lakes and a river that are ideal for kayaking and paddle boarding. There are full-facility and primitive campsites plus five log cabins that have been modernized for comfortable lodging.
terpark where you might just bump into a manatee or a mermaid. The Weeki Wachee Springs State park has water flumes, an authentic lazy river, river cruises and mermaid shows. Kids can go to ranger, lifeguard or mermaid camp. Stay in nearby towns such as Spring Hill, Dunedin, Tampa or a local camping ground. WWW.WEEKIWACHEE.COM
City Vacations
WEKIWA SPRINGS STATE PARK NATURE ADVENTURES Christie Lewis of Naples became a fan of Wekiwa Springs when she lived in Orlando. Along with the Myakka State River Park, Wekiwa is one of only two federally designated “wild and scenic rivers.” Lewis recommends going when it is hot to enjoy swimming, kayaking and canoeing in the cool crystal Springs. If you want to stay overnight in the park, full camping equipment including tents, stoves, lanterns, sleeping bags and a canoe or kayak are available for $132 for two days/one night or $60 for a campsite if you bring your own gear.
REUNION RESORT We promised to not to mention destinations near Disney, but this resort in Kissimmee is special enough to forget about a mouse sighting. There are three championship golf courses, a luxurious spa and a water park that has a lazy river, slides and splashing water features. The kids club hosts a variety of activities all day long at the pool, including hula-hoop contests and crafts. The best part are the luxurious suites in the hotel and condos where parental privacy is guaranteed and the coffeemaker and dishes are cleaned daily by housekeeping. Florida resident specials often bring down the rates to a mid-price hotel level and the condos are roomy enough for a large family or even two small families to share. If you do decide to venture out, there are a lot of fun things to do within a short drive, including The Orlando Science Center, a day trip to Tampa or Cape Canaveral, nearby state parks, airboat rides and, ahem, a few theme parks.

Reader favorites include the historic trolley tour and feeding the catfish while dining at the Santa Maria Restaurant. The Hilton Historic Bayfront is close enough to walk to all of the old city attractions. THE EMBASSY SUITES Located down the road from Busch Gardens and Adventure Island Waterpark on the USF Campus, The Embassy Suites is in the ideal location to experience Tampa. The hotel provides free shuttle service to and from the parks and includes a free hot breakfast for guests in its atrium. ith the shift in overall energy that comes with spring, it’s easy to see how the tradition of spring cleaning came about. It’s invigorating to air out our homes and scrub deeply to make the indoors feel as fresh as the outdoors. But spring cleaning doesn’t have to apply only to our homes. It also works well for our calendars. Spring makes a great time to reevaluate our daily activities. Making time to examine what has worked and what hasn’t, returns an amount of control to our calendar that we may have felt slip away in the busyness of living it out.

Here’s how you can give your daily planner a makeover that will restore energy to your days in the months to come: Start by pulling out your calendar and a blank piece of paper. As best you can, list out everything you typically do in a given week that doesn’t show on your calendar: from fixing meals and doing laundry to making appointments and running errands. Once you’ve created your list, you’re ready to look at it alongside your calendar. “Editing down your life’s responsibilities to something you can manage given the amount of energy and time you have is a process,” says Glynnis Whitwer, author of I Used to Be So Organized. “It’s almost like we can band-aid the schedule. But until we deal with that master schedule or project list... most women never get down everything in one place and acknowledge how much they have to do.” Be empowered knowing this first step will take you a long way beyond where most moms have gone. Then be ready to use that energy to tackle the next step. Purge One of my favorite things about spring cleaning is weeding out those items that are simply consuming space. The same can be true for our calendars. Just as it’s difficult to face that jam-packed closet in desperate need of cleaning, it can also be tough to think about the hectic days on your calendar. But the busiest times are the ones you should consider first. As you look over a recent month or two, search for the days with lots of ink. Reflect back to times where you may have wished to clone yourself. Were those isolated incidents, or were they common occurrences? What could you eliminate from your plans to ease the pace of those days? Next consider the value of your regular activities. Have some ceased to fulfill their purpose? Maybe the volunteer position you took when your children were young and you wanted adult company has started to squeeze out other pursuits you’d rather engage NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2015

in. Scrutinize each day of your week for commitments you may have outgrown. Then pass them along to someone else. Some commitments require more deliberation to determine whether they are worth keeping or not. The best question to ask is: does this still work for me and my family? If it once gave you energy but now leaves you drained, it’s time to examine it more closely. Consider why it no longer works. If it can’t be fixed or reworked, it’s ripe for disposal. The greatest difficulty with some aspects of clearing out a schedule can be getting free from a commitment. Whitwer suggests finding a simple way to say no without making excuses. “I recommend women craft a really good response before they have to say it. Value the job you’re being asked to do. Value the importance of it. And value the person who is asking you. But decline with a simple response.” Dust Many things may stay the same in your daily schedule. The children will still attend school in the fall. You’ll continue washing the laundry. Spring-cleaning these items means dusting them off and seeing where they need to be polished. Go back to your busiest days. Could one of the activities be moved? Maybe it’s time for piano lessons to happen on Wednesdays instead of Mondays. Look for options to shift the overload from busy days to quieter ones. Dusting off your schedule means also being aware of upcoming changes. If your daily workout has been happening during morning preschool but you’ll be switching to afternoon kindergarten, you’ll need to rethink that part of your day. Accounting for it now allows you to put systems in place before the next school year to ensure your plan runs smoothly. Refresh Empty spots invite clutter - it’s why our homes never stay pristine for long. The same can be true of our calendars. While you’re cleaning out your calendar it’s a prime time to think about how much empty space you’d like to maintain in your days. If you’d like to have some quiet downtime to catch up with the kids for a half hour after school, it helps to write that in your calendar. Name the “empty spaces” so you’ve claimed them for what you wish them to be instead of allowing them to be taken over by other events. Like spring-cleaning your home, where you open the windows to let the fresh breezes cleanse your rooms, sampling new activities can freshen up your schedule. Is there a hobby you’ve been hoping to try? Maybe it would fit in one of those spots you emptied. Pencil it in. If you can’t imagine a particular pastime but know you’re up for a change, write down the promise of a new pursuit for yourself. Then be on the lookout for an activity you’d like to try during an empty calendar slot. Spring cleaning takes time and energy. It requires looking in every corner, purging, dusting, and refreshing. But the revival it brings makes it worth every minute. If you take this approach to your calendar you’ll be much closer to having a plan that brings energy to your days - for summer and beyond.
