Mickey is a delightful 1.5-year-old golden retriever who is training to become a service dog for a veteran. Part of his training involves the Pups ‘n’ Books program at Collier County Public Library branches, where children can read to PAWS dogs. This training also involves visiting schools and retirement communities so that the dogs become accustomed to being in many different environments. The training process typically takes 2-2.5 years to complete, and can cost up to $40,000. Dogs are provided at no cost to veterans. PAWS is one of the beneficiaries of the upcoming Celebrity Martini Glass Auction on March 24. Visit www.naplescmga.com for details on the event. TOO MUCH
SCREEN TIME
TOO LITTLE
SLEEP
Increased time online exposes children to cyber bullying and numerous other stressors. It also affects the amount of sleep they get. All of this can lead to increased anxiety, depression and other mental and social disorders. We can help. We offer numerous programs to improve your child’s mental wellness and build strength in coping with the many challenges they face in today’s world AND online. We encourage children and youth to reduce their “screen” time and emphasize the importance of their “me” time, enabling them to bask in a light other than that of their smartphone screen -- that of their inner light.

One of the best parts about my job is that I work entirely from my home office. I am home when my kids get ready for school, when they come home after school, and when they are sick and need to stay home. It’s a great set up: I have a comfy office chair, two computers to multitask with, cozy beds for my two dogs under my desk, and a door that locks when I need to make and receive business calls. The hard part is when I need to use the doors to close my work day so I can be present for my children. Some days, okay most days, the boundaries of work and family become blurred. When I read our MOMentum Mom Cyndee Woolley’s response to balancing work and motherhood for her family, I was impressed with her advice to worry less about balance and more about presence. Despite her obligations to running her business and community service, she declares a time when the phone and computer are completely off and she spends time giving her daughter her full attention. She learned this advice from her grandmother, who once told her that her biggest regret is that she spent too much time cleaning and not enough time playing with her kids. If working from home is something that you would like to learn more about, life coach and home business mentor April O’Leary gives great advice on how to get started on page 36. When I do get to leave my home office, it is to do fun things like shoot the cover of our magazine, and this month we decided to celebrate National Reading Month by featuring the popular Pups ‘n’ Books program at the Collier County Public Library, along with our Cover Kids Jimmy and Justin and PAWS Assistance pup-in-training Mickey. In addition to reading to dogs, children can enjoy story times weekly at every library branch (times listed on page 45). For older children looking for a new book to read, we turned to our Reader Recommends columnists for their very favorite books they have read so far in their young lives, on page 44. There is a lot more to celebrate in March, and you will find the best St. Patrick’s Day and Easter events, as well as Community Passover seders to attend throughout this issue and in our print and online calendar. Finally, we wish to extend our sincerest condolences to our neighbors in Parkland, Florida for the horrific tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day. We hope that the 17 lives that were taken will not be in vain, and we stand with the community and support the changes that will help prevent another school shooting from ever happening again.

Each child took a turn putting paint on the canvas under the watchful eye and gentle direction of artist Mally Khorasantchi, and soon their individual efforts began to come together to create a cohesive abstract painting. Mally explained that later she will add more detail to the painting, as well as her own unique artistic flair, before the painting will be ready to auction at the fundraising event. “I think it’s a wonderful and unique experience for our children to interact with an artist of Mally’s caliber,” said Alicia Browner, director of fundraising and events at CCCR. “Even though they’re still very young, the hope is that this will inspire some of them to continue exploring their creative side as they grow older.” Big Impressions by Little Artists will be held on Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. Tickets are $75 per person, and available for purchase online at www.collierchildcare.org.

CSN Grad, Author Chessy Prout to Speak at Wellfit Program
N
ational teen advocate and author Chessy Prout, a former Naples resident and a 2017 graduate of the Community School, will share her inspiring story following the traumatic aftermath of her sexual assault at a prestigious New Hampshire boarding school. Recognized as among those who planted the seeds for the #MeToo movement when she came forward in her pursuit of justice, Prout’s book, “I Have the Right To: A High School Survivor’s Story of Sexual Assault, Justice, and Hope,” is available March 6. Together, she and co-author Jenn Abelson, an investigative reporter for the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team, will share Prout’s message of hope, letting survivors know they are not alone. Raised in Japan, Chessy matriculated to St. Paul’s School – a boarding school in New Hampshire that her father and sister had attended. There, as a freshman, Chessy was the victim of a sexual assault. Chessy’s case and trial garnered national and international media attention, as her assault was part of the ritual competition at the school called “Senior Salute.” Two years later, in Chessy’s pursuit of justice, she decided to step forward publicly. In August 2016, she launched the #IHaveTheRightTo initiative with the organization PAVE, for which she is an ambassador. As a PAVE ambassador, Chessy has traveled around the country to speak about the importance of consent education in K-12 schools; encourages survivors and others to assert their most important, basic rights; and uses her voice to let other survivors know they are not alone. Registration is available online at www.WellfitGirls.org. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Wellfit Girls’ five-month fitness, leadership, and empowerment program dedicated to inspiring, challenging, and empowering teen girls to climb high in all areas of life.

FAMILY LAW
By Reuben Doupé and Dale Klaus
How to Know When It’s Time
A
s divorce lawyers, we are often asked about the divorce rate. The divorce rate for any specific geographic location is calculated by simply dividing the number of divorces by the number of marriages during a certain period of time. Florida’s Bureau of Vital Statistics tracks, among other things, the number of marriages and divorces that occur in our state. In 2016, for example, there were 167,416 marriages performed in Florida (3,077 here in Collier County); and there were 79,677 dissolutions of marriage (1,226 here in Collier County). This results in a divorce rate of 47.6% statewide (39.8% in Collier). While the annual 2017 figures have not yet been released, through September 2017 those rates are 47.3% and 43.8%, respectively. Skewing the data is the fact that only Florida residents can get divorced in Florida, while anyone can get married in Florida. Because Florida is a destination for weddings of non-residents, many couples may marry here and then return to their home state, where they may or may not ever divorce. Further, Floridians may marry in another state then divorce in Florida, and Florida divorces may involve couples that married in another state. Suffice it to say, due to these numerous variations, it is impossible to say exactly how many marriages end in divorce, but using the figure above is the best we can do for now. The divorce rate among all marriages is in the
range of 45-50%. The point of this statistic is to let you know that if you are considering divorce, you are not alone. Even if you do not have many divorced friends in your social circle, there are many out there who can offer you support. Knowing when or if you should start the divorce process can be very stressful and a very difficult decision. There are some specific circumstances in which this decision can be very simple, such as cases of infidelity or domestic violence, or variations of deceit between spouses. But for the majority of divorcing couples, it is not such a black-and-white decision. If you find yourself in this place, don’t go it alone. Reach out for the support of those that are in the best position to help you through this difficult decision (this may not include friends or family). Seeking advice from counselors, whether professional therapists or church counselors, is always a good idea. Your lawyer is there to advise you on your legal rights, to make sure you
are informed of your rights, and to help you exercise those rights if you wish. Your lawyer is not trained to help you determine whether it is time to end your marriage. But knowing your rights may be an important consideration. It is easy to fear the unknown, and consulting with a family law attorney before you have made your decision may help you understand what is in store if you decide to divorce. Knowing what rights you have and what your financial picture may look like after a divorce may be a very important factor in determining if and when you divorce. Finding the right confidant or advisor to guide you through the process is very important and is not a step that should be skipped. This applies to emotional advice as well as legal advice.

PREGNANCY
By Joyce D. Pallens, Psy.D.
Learn About Postpartum Depression JOYCE D. PALLENS, Psy.D., a licensed psychologist with the Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida, answers your questions about postpartum depression. What is postpartum depression? Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mood disorder that is diagnosed when a woman exhibits positive symptoms of depression after having a baby. Women with postpartum depression experience difficulty bonding with their babies and some may reject their babies. They can experience feelings of sadness, emotional numbness, excessive worries, guilt about being a “bad mom,” irritability, social isolation, and frequent headaches or body pain, as well as finding themselves eating too much or too little, sleeping too much or too little, and having difficulty taking care of themselves, their baby, and other family members. What is the difference between postpartum depression and the “baby blues”? Having a baby is a very challenging stage of life for some parents, both emotionally and physically. About 80% of women experience the baby blues after having a baby. This is considered a normal reaction to the adjustment process of having a baby, especially for first-time moms. Women feel worried, tired, overwhelmed, and sad; however, these symptoms typically resolve themselves within a few days to no more that 4-6 weeks. On the other hand, postpartum depression is a complication or extension of the baby blues, and it affects approximately
15-20% of women after giving birth. A woman is diagnosed with PPD if she exhibits five or more of the following symptoms over a two-week period on a mostly daily basis during pregnancy or up to 4 weeks following delivery: feeling down, depressed, or hopeless; little interest or pleasure in doing things; change in appetite or weight; change in sleep patterns; feeling tired or agitated/irritable; feeling guilty or worthless; difficulty concentrating and making decisions; and recurring thoughts of death. How do you screen for PPD in your practice? Usually, every woman has two postpartum examinations appointments with a gynecologist or midwife. During these visits, the staff nurse uses a screening tool called Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale. If the woman scores high according to the scales, a same-day appointment with a behavioral health provider is requested. We monitor depressive symptoms during pregnancy as well using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Also, every woman that comes for her annual visit at our clinic answers the nine questions of the PHQ-9. The process is the same for Behavioral Health consultation, depending on the score and intensity of the symptoms reported. Does PPD affect women only? No, fathers can suffer from postpartum depression, too. Symptoms are similar for both women and men. However, the research on PPD in men is not as extensive as it is for women. How does someone develop PPD?
There are some high-risk factors. For example, history of anxiety or depression or any other mental health condition, anxiety or depression during pregnancy, maternal age (for example, adolescent mothers have a higher risk), lack of social support, lack of economic resources, cultural factors, pregnancy complications, baby health complications, and violence – especially domestic violence – can all increase the likelihood of PPD developing. What is the treatment for PPD? Treatment will depend on the intensity of the symptoms. For mild symptoms, psychotherapy and behavioral health interventions are the best treatments, which consist of one-on-one therapy/intervention with the patient. The treatment of choice is cognitive behavioral therapy, which provides validation and helps new parents replace fearful thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with more positive/realistic ones. If the symptoms are more moderate or severe, we can combine medication with psychotherapy. The medication commonly prescribed are antidepressants, specifically the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. How can family and friends help? They can be there for the new parent, help with the baby and household chores, validate feelings, and recognize the difficult process of taking care of a newborn. Also, they can encourage the new mom to talk with a health provider about how she/he feels. The health provider will provide information and coordinate care, if necessary.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Amanda Jackson, Communications & Community Engagement
Making Connections in the Café
D
uring a breakfast of doughnut holes and apple juice, students at Calusa Park Elementary School’s (CPE) International Friendship Café discuss where they came from and where they’re going. The new club recently hosted its second meeting, a place for students to make lasting connections in the school. As the meeting started, teacher Sandy Mendoza listed different topics and asked students to stand up when they heard something they liked. “Do you like chocolate? Pizza? Did you move here from Venezuela?” This ice breaker led into the group’s activity for the month: creating a collage representing their favorite parts of living in the United States of America. “I like getting to see new friends who are from different states and countries that I never knew about,” third grader Sheyla Garcia said. She moved to the U.S. from Cuba. “I didn’t have many toys in Cuba, so I’m cutting out a lot of pictures of toys.” She said her favorite part about living here is the food, her school, and toys. Other students decorated their collages with pictures of sports stars, books, games, animals, and more. “I was born in the United States but spoke Spanish, and I remember going to the first day of kindergarten and not knowing
what was going on,” Mendoza explained. “I wanted to establish a space for students to get to know each other and realize they’re not the only ones going through the English language learning process.” She said the first meeting was a little nerve-wracking for students. “They didn’t realize why they were here. When they understood that they’d be meeting students like them from other countries and they’d be speaking Spanish and doing activities together, they were so excited.” Mendoza says she’s already seen a change in students’ academics. “They’re more relaxed, participating in class more.” She added that she has seen changes socially as well. “In the hallways you’ll see kindergartners talking to fifth graders, fifth graders talking to third graders,” said Mendoza. “It’s built a community, which is what we wanted.” The International Friendship Café is expanding next month. CPE has students from Bulgaria, Pakistan, Korea, and other countries who will be joining the group. Their next activity is discussing their future goals and dreams. “The first questions they ask, ‘When will we do this again? When will I get to see my new friends again?’ We can’t wait to expand this to even more students,” Mendoza said.

yndee Woolley is everywhere! She has spent her life and career in Naples and her love for our community overflows into all aspects of her life. Cyndee’s heavy involvement with local small businesses and nonprofit organizations is an outflow of her passion for Southwest Florida. She lives to make our community great. Born and raised in Naples, Cyndee attended what was then Edison Community College, as well as the University of West Florida. She has spent her career in market-

ing and communications and, after working in this capacity for a variety of organizations, Cyndee started her own firm, C2 Communications. This successful venture, coupled with the publication of her book, Building Brand You, display her desire to help businesses succeed through the power of story. But Cyndee doesn’t stop there. Most notably, she recently started The League of Courageous Women, a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging young women in middle school, high school, and beyond to dream big dreams, set high goals, and actively pursue leadership opportunities.
Cyndee is a mom to an 11-year-old daughter, Bridget, an aspiring dancer who loves to travel and excels in school. She and her daughter spend lots of time together; I especially enjoyed hearing Cyndee’s perspective on family time, motherhood, and the idea of balance. College? I was born and raised in Naples. I got my associate’s degree from what used to be Edison Community College (now Florida SouthWestern State College). I went on to University of West Florida, where I received my bachelor’s degree in management and marketing. I decided to gain some work experience before pursuing a master’s degree. I am currently working towards a master’s in business administration from Hodges University. Career Path? I have always wanted to be a small business owner. Before starting a business, I knew I needed experience in different sectors. I’ve been involved in sales and marketing since 2000 in various capacities: hospitality, construction, public relations, and communications. Throughout my career, my real passion has been the ability to share someone’s story as a way to compel others to get engaged in the community and take action. I love to hone in – to share others’ stories. I built my business (C2 Communications) as a way to pursue this passion. Tell us about your book. I wrote Building Brand You in a time when social media was just emerging and the economy was flailing. It’s a tool book designed to help business owners answer the question “How do I market myself?” What motivates you in your career? C2 Communications is nine years old, and it has been so rewarding on a professional level for me. I’m really interested in making the community a better place for my daughter, especially as I see her grow and change. And as a single mom, the business has allowed me to create a better life for us. Tell us about your daughter. Bridget is 11 years old, going on 30. She’s smart and compassionate. She’s an aspiring dancer. NEAPOLITANfamily • March 2018
Bridget sets really big goals for herself, and she puts her heart and soul into achieving these goals. Nothing can deter her when she sets her mind on something. Bridget attends Gulfview Middle School. What has been your greatest accomplishment? There’s a group of my daughter’s friends I’ve been able to inspire. I’ve connected with them, and I’ve been able to connect them with other leaders in the community. Inspiring the next generation of women leaders has given me a lot of hope. I’ve loved being a part of shaping this group of girls as they set big goals. What has been your biggest regret? I had the opportunity to backpack across Europe after I graduated from college. I should have taken that opportunity to travel before I had to start making payments on my student loans. I wish I had traveled before becoming a mom – before work. Tell us about your volunteer positions and community involvement. I’m a member of the Northside Naples Kiwanis Club, and am on the board of Keep Collier Beautiful, a nonprofit dedicated to improving waste handling practices in Collier County. I’m also heavily involved with the Leadership Collier Foundation and a member of the Public Relations Society of America. In addition, I’m executive director of the Farm City BBQ of Collier County. I’ve been on the Farm City BBQ committee for 16 years, but formally took over the organization around 10 years ago and filed for nonprofit status in 2011. We’ve donated about half-a-million dollars back into youth leadership programs. What’s next for you? Research shows that about 44% of girls in 4th and 5th grade desire to be a leader. In middle school, there
is a point at which that number drops dramatically. About 36% of girls in 6th grade want to be leaders. Within a relatively short period of time, they are losing momentum to be engaged as leaders in their schools and within their family units. A new non-profit organization I’ve started seeks to raise up the next generation of women leaders. The League of Courageous Women is dedicated to inspiring young women to make bigger goals. Through various events and programs, we are connecting middle school, high school, and adult women with one another to inspire future leaders. Our goal is to raise awareness about the need for cultivating women leaders and elevate the conversation about women in leadership. On September 29, we are hosting a Leadership Summit; we’re partnering with various agencies and organizations, including Hodges University, to present topics related to women in leadership. We’re planning to continue hosting networking events, connecting women of various ages. Additionally, we are planning to add on a formalized mentorship program and implement a “Courageous Cash Kickstarter Program.” The fund will support girls who have ideas on ways to improve their schools and home. How do you balance motherhood, your career, and your burgeoning nonprofit? I don’t think balance is the answer. I think presence is the answer. We get offbalance when we’re at home, and all we’re thinking about is being at work. Or when we’re at work, and all we think about is being at home. True fulfillment and balance happen when we shut our phones off, talk with one another, and genuinely listen. Best parenting advice you’ve ever received and from whom? When I was
starting my business, I was crazed and stressed. I worked long hours, and I stayed up so late. Sometimes, I would drive home and tell my daughter, “Mommy’s computer is at the office tonight,” or “Mommy shut her phone off for the day.” I would see her face light up with excitement. I remember my grandmother telling me that her biggest regret is that she spent too much time cleaning and not enough time playing when her kids were little. I really internalized that. I want to be the example of that for my daughter. And now that she’s 11 and has her own phone, she says to me quite often, “I’m shutting my phone off to be with you.” What does a typical weeknight look like for you? Every night is different; our schedule is a mix of ballet, board meetings, and many other activities. However, I believe in making time for family meals. We always sit down to dinner together. I also make breakfast every morning before school. What do you do for fun on the weekends? My daughter is very active in ballet, and so I often do pilates on the weekends at her dance studio. We enjoy walking the Gordon River Greenway. My daughter and I enjoy traveling to explore various places and go to concerts – it’s something meaningful we pursue together. What do you love about Naples? I love that we have a quieter pace of life here. We have the ability to slow down and enjoy each other. We have great schools, and it’s safe to send our kids to school here. Naples is a great place to have a family and spend quality time with your family. I love visiting Miami, New York City, and Los Angeles, but I come back to Naples because it’s a great quality of life for my daughter.

ESTATE PLANNING
By Norell Albanis
Planning for the Future When Your Child Has Special Needs
T
here are ten planning steps you can take right away to take charge of your child’s future care. A typical child could recover from a failure to plan, but a child with special needs may never recover. Although some people with special needs are able to support themselves as an adult, many will need to rely on government assistance. Most importantly, you must put in place a clear plan for the care of your children if something happens to you. This is critical: don’t leave the care of your family and assets to chance. The next 10 steps will map out exactly what you need to do. 1. Name guardians for both the short term and the long term. If you have children under 18, you must give clear legal
authority for designated caregivers to take custody of your children immediately if there is an emergency. Ideally, make sure these people live within 20 minutes of your home as these are the people who will step in until your permanent guardians can arrive. And you must also designate in writing exactly who you would want to care for your children in the long term. 2. Identify the need for future care planning. If your child won’t be selfsufficient as an adult, you’ll need to make plans to secure their future. If your child is still very young, you may not be able to predict this yet – you’ll want to be hopeful, but at least plan for all possibilities. Tragically, many people with disabilities end up living in poverty.
3. Consider adult guardianship and alternatives at age 18. When your child reaches age 18, you will no longer be entitled to make decisions about your child’s finances or personal care unless you petition a judge to become your child’s legal guardian. Even though your child may not be capable of making decisions about their well-being at age 18, the law presumes your child is able. Depending on your child’s need, you can petition for full guardianship, limited guardianship (where your child is capable of making some decisions), or an alternative to guardianship such as a power of attorney. 4. Plan for and secure government benefits at age 18. Your child can become eligible for government benefits at age 18.

Medicaid and Medicare provide health insurance; Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) provide monthly cash assistance. Medicaid recipients might also be able to participate in so-called “Medicaid waiver” programs, which provide supported housing and work programs. While there is no need to do special planning to preserve Medicare or SSDI benefits, many disabled adults rely on Medicaid and SSI for full or at least supplemental support. To qualify for these programs, recipients must meet certain income and asset limits. If your child has more than $2,000 in their name or if you die and your money doesn’t go to your child the right way, it could disqualify them from receiving benefits. Even if you think your family can provide for your child’s lifetime needs, it’s probably wise to position your child to qualify for Medicaid because of the many programs that could enhance your child’s quality of life, such as supported living and work environments. 5. Create a life care plan. A life care plan can help ensure your child receives appropriate care (whether at home or in a residential facility), identify public and private sources of support, and give you the peace of mind knowing that you are making the best choices for your child. 6. Prepare a living trust and will. Make the transition of your financial wealth as easy as possible for your family. Any inheritance your child receives would likely disqualify them from government benefits. Further, your financial assets may be subject to a court process called probate, which is a lengthy, public, and oftentimes expensive
court process that could leave your loved ones without immediate and protected access to your money. If you plan with a revocable living trust, in addition to a will, you can avoid probate and decide who has access to your children’s inheritance, without the information entering the public record and being available to predators who might be particularly attracted to vulnerable beneficiaries, such as the young and disabled. 7. Establish a special needs trust. A special needs trust is designed to manage resources while maintaining the individual’s eligibility for government benefits. Medicaid and other public benefit programs will not pay for everything your child might need. Therefore, a special needs trust can pay for medical and dental expenses, necessary or desirable equipment, training and education, insurance, transportation, and special foods. Finally, a special needs trust can help you avoid one of the most common mistakes parents make – or are advised to make – disinheriting a child with disabilities to protect public benefits. The main problem with this advice is that government programs typically finance a very minimal standard of living, and adults with special needs may not be able to supplement those benefits through work. 8. Build a team. During your life, you can manage the trust, but when you and your spouse are no longer able to serve as trustees, you can choose who will serve according to instructions that you have provided. Make sure that whoever you choose is financially savvy, well-organized, and, most importantly, ethical. Sometimes family members lack the skills needed to successfully administer a special needs trust.
Instead, consider selecting a professional trustee in conjunction with an advocate/ care manager. 9. Provide enough financial resources. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure you have enough savings, investment resources, or life insurance to care for your child if you can’t. Life insurance is one of the best ways to get money into a special needs trust. Work with a trusted advisor to determine exactly how much insurance would be sufficient, and designate the trust as the beneficiary of your life insurance so it doesn’t get pulled into the court process and become unavailable when it’s most needed. 10. Pass on more than just your money. Think of the knowledge you have gained spending a lifetime caring for your child. Be sure to write or record a complete set of instructions to guide future caregivers and trustees. Include information regarding residential preferences, medical concerns, preferred doctors and therapists, essential therapies, and social activities. Although these instructions are not legally binding, they can reflect your thinking on a range of issues and provide a plan for caregivers to follow.

Destination: The Cliffs of Insanity
By Karen T. Bartlett ou’re watching Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. From a secret cliff-top castle, Dumbledore flies Harry across the raging sea to the dark and mysterious Horcrux Cave, a jagged opening in a towering rock. If you’ve been to the wild and sensuous west coast of Ireland, you might think that those epic jagged rock cliffs, which are about 300 million years old, look a lot like the Cliffs of Moher. And you’d be right. But wait, you say. Aren’t those the Cliffs of Insanity from The Princess Bride? Right again! The scene: Andre the Giant, the evil Vizzini, and fencing master Inigo Montoya have kidnapped Princess Buttercup. They scale the rock face with their captive, but The Man in Black (her true love, Westley) climbs up after them, dramatically defeats the bad guys, and rescues Buttercup. The rugged west coast of Ireland has hosted many spectacular movie scenes (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Ryan’s Daughter, Far and Away, and more). But it’s hard to beat the Cliffs of Moher – rising straight up to over 700 feet at the highest point – to make the fantasy come alive.

Try to wrap your senses around some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery: a sea of swaying grasses and wildflowers under blue skies and heavy meringue clouds on sunny days, and mist-enshrouded fairy tale castles when fog rolls in. In the icy Atlantic below are basking sharks, grey seals, and dolphins. A herd of wild goats dating back to medieval times claim their territory at the base of the cliffs. In summer, fat cows graze on impossibly green pastures, and a huge colony of more than 1,300 Atlantic puffins nests on
rocky ledges carved out in the Ice Age. A coastal path skirts the coastline for about eight miles between the nearby villages of Hags Head and Doolin. The views are stunning: the Aran Islands to the west, the Maumturks and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north; the dramatic Dingle Peninsula and Loop Head to the south. Do the whole walk on your own (best for children 10 and up) or get a guide for a shorter portion, from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. doolincliffwalk.com
You also can see the mighty “Cliffs of Insanity” from the water. A 60-minute cruise from Doolin takes you past O’Brien’s Tower, a puffin’s habitat, and Harry Potter’s sea cave. cliffs-of-moher-cruises.com Admission to the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Center includes a paved walkway with observation points, including O’Brien’s Tower and the interpretive center. WORKING FROM HOME
By April O’Leary
Making Extra Income from Home
M
y first daughter, Sadie, was born in September 2001. I was the ripe old age of 24, recently married, and new to Florida. Being a diligent professional, I was trying to get my teacher’s license transferred so I could work once Sadie was a bit older. Unbeknownst to me, I had to get hired on full-time first before I could apply. Nursing and confused, I had no idea how that could be possible. I had a newborn after all. Did they not understand that? So I gave up the idea of going back to teaching and ended up staying home for the next eight years, and added two more girls to the brood. I was the president of the local MOMS club, volunteered for the Relay for Life, and hosted playgroups regularly, but always felt that something ‘adult’ was miss-
ing. I didn’t feel intellectually challenged and didn’t know how I could fill that need without sacrificing time with my girls. The world of home-business ownership eluded me. Today, years later, I have coached women to succeed in three different types of home-based business models. All of them offer flexibility and the potential to earn money without sacrificing your ability to be home with your kids. Here are brief descriptions of these models of business and some examples of moms in Southwest Florida who have already chosen to start their own business. If they can do it, you can too! 1. Starting a Business from Scratch Whether you are a skilled photographer, a former teacher who wants to tutor on
the side, or a crafty entrepreneur who prefers producing products, the opportunities to start your own business are endless. Elizabeth Valdez and her husband JC founded Driven Transportation, an executive transportation service, in 2009. With two young children, they can work their business around their schedule. “What I love most about driving is the flexibility,” said Elizabeth. “Staying on top of marketing can be challenging, but we’re hoping to grow 25-30% in 2018. Working with my husband has brought us closer together. It’s worth it.” While Elizabeth provides a service, Sabrina Hall, mother of two and owner of Rainbow Frog Textiles, weaves beautiful baby wraps made of hand-dyed yarn and works after her children are in bed, with hopes to someday quit her job as a nurse. Starting a business from scratch has its challenges. “In the start, I was only breaking even,” Hall said. “But after two years, I am making a profit. It’s growing right now and, honestly, I don’t see a stop.” She sells both commissioned and ready-to-buy pieces through her Facebook ‘chatter groups’ and her website, www.therainbowfrog.com. While starting a business from scratch can seem overwhelming, it is an excellent option for those who want to do their own thing without any restrictions from a larger entity. You can make it as simple or complex as you want, and you can provide a service or a product. You can sell online or personto-person. Anything goes in this business.

2. Starting a Traditional Franchise Most of us think of traditional franchises as large-scale operations that carry a considerable overhead and have a location, but that is not always the case. There are plenty of traditional franchises that can be run from home or on site. Tina Benett, mom of three, wasn’t looking to run a franchise when she discovered Zumbini, an early childhood development music and movement class for children ages 0-4 and their caregivers. “I fell in love with this program while watching Zumbini Time with my threemonth-old son on BabyFirst TV channel,” Benett said. “I wanted to sign up for a class because he loved the music and songs, but the closest class was in Miami, so I brought it to Naples.” She became a certified Zumbini instructor, and believes the support of the program sets the teachers up for success. “The best part of being a Zumbini instructor is seeing the developmental growth these children have that takes place in a session and knowing I had a hand in it.” She encourages any mom who wants to build a business and loves working with children and adults to take a look at the Zumbini opportunity.
3. Starting a Virtual Franchise Danielle Russo-Slugh and her husband Marc moved from New York City to Naples three years ago. Former traders on the New York Stock Exchange, they wanted a lessstressful business with a lower overhead that would give them the opportunity to make a lucrative income and help people, too. After Marc survived Stage 4 cancer, nothing was more important to them than health, so they decided to pair their passion for a healthy, holistic lifestyle with a virtual franchise business model called Isagenix. “We feel so fortunate to have been able to partner with some amazing people in the U.S. and recently started developing a team in the U.K. Growing our business online has been amazing. Marc and I get to work together, and we just bought our dream house near Seagate Beach. Our vision for 2018 is to grow our business tenfold and help even more people,” said Danielle. Starting an online business is not for everyone. The learning curve of developing skills on social media, getting comfortable with sales conversations, and navigating technology can feel overwhelming, but for anyone who would prefer to earn while they
learn, this can be a great option. “Many moms you know, and probably see on social media, have chosen this model. It has a low start-up cost, and all the training, mentorship, and website support is included,” Danielle said. If you find a company and product line that you believe in, do your own research. Look for someone who is successful and ask them to be your mentor and virtual franchising could be your path to profitability. I have found entrepreneurship to be a fantastic path for moms. We’re smart. We are capable of juggling a lot of roles. We thrive on a challenge. And, most importantly, we want to work from our strengths and help others in the process. While there is not one right path for every mom, I believe that home business ownership can be an excellent way to bring additional money into your household while giving you a chance to develop your professional skills, meet new people, and, most importantly, have fun. Empty Bowls & Two of Naples’ most popular annual events, Empty Bowls and Chalk Art Festival, are held each year on the same day. Residents and visitors flock to Cambier Park to buy a bowl (handcrafted and painted by local potters, artists, educators, students, and volunteers) and sample soups from 50 local restaurants. In 2018, Empty Bowls raised more than $173,000 for the fight against hunger. After eating their fill of soup, the crowd strolls over to Fifth Avenue and watches artists transform the pavement into colorful works of art, sponsored by the Naples-Pelican Bay Rotary Clubs. Funds raised are used to meet a variety of local needs, including college scholarships and feeding the hungry.

How to Recognize and Resolve Your Child’s Reading Difficulties
D
oes your child see letters, numbers, or words backward? Is he unable to identify the names of letters by the beginning of kindergarten or unable to identify the sounds of letters by the beginning of first grade? Was she delayed in acquiring speech (First words should happen by about one year of age and phrasing should be in place between 18-24 months.)? Does he have difficulty in pronunciation beyond the age of five or six years? Does she not seem to pick up on nursery rhymes? Does your adolescent child have difficulty retrieving known words when expressing himself in speech? These signs may indicate dyslexia. Learning challenges, including dyslexia, a diagnosis that can include many different sensory processing difficulties, may be largely overcome with the right academic intervention. Ideally, intervention should be applied as early as possible, between kindergarten and third grade. Learning difficulties are not limited to dyslexia. Any child experiencing difficulty in developing reading and writing skills may benefit from a specialized literacy intervention program with the right practitioner. Before hiring a tutor, ask to see records of the tutor’s graduate work and certifications as a reading specialist. “A teacher’s knowledge of how children learn to read as well as her experience teaching a specific program will ultimately determine the success of even the best reading programs,” stated Sally Shaywitz, in her book Overcoming Dyslexia. For a medical diagnosis of dyslexia, a neuropsychologist can be consulted for evaluation at a cost of several thousand dollars, which may not be covered by insurance. However, an official diagnosis often is unnecessary. A qualified reading specialist can assess the academic needs of the student and implement effective intensive intervention. There are three main program components for successfully teaching reading and writing to children with dyslexia and other learning challenges. The components should be combined seamlessly to create a powerful program for accelerated learning. The first component is a multisensory approach to instruction.
This allows the student to both receive (read) and produce (write) information through the use of methods that involve neuropathways connected to two or more of the senses (sight, hearing, touch/ kinesthetic movement). The second component of an effective program is phonics instruction. Orton-Gillingham has been popularly considered the ‘gold standard’ of phonics instruction for children with dyslexia since the 1930s. The approach is systematic, highly structured, and multisensory, staying within the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) throughout each lesson. Developed by famous psychologist, Lev Vygotsky in the early 1930s, the ZPD is defined as the difference between what a child can do by himself and what he can accomplish with expert support. To round out a powerful program, the third component is a ‘whole language’ type of approach. These practices teach reading and writing within a larger context of activity that is meaningful for the student. Reading interesting stories that capture the imagination and writing personal anecdotes in a journal are examples of lesson elements within this framework. These elements bring enjoyment and creativity to the process, which increases motivation for the student. Among the strategies of Reading Recovery, a program that has been internationally popular since the mid 1980s, is the practice of posing the questions, “Does it look right?”, “Does it sound right?”, and “Does it make sense?” This allows the student to cross-check multiple types of information to confirm their responses during reading. Hiring private academic help can be an expense that some families cannot afford. Fortunately, in the state of Florida the Gardiner Scholarship provides funds to help pay for private reading specialists and certain other supports under particular circumstances. For more information on the scholarship, visit www.fldoe.org. DIANA MYERS-FINCH, M. ED., is president of Reading Rescue of Naples. Visit www.readingrescue.com.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL READING MONTH
Middle Schoolers’ Favorite Books
There’s no better way to celebrate National Reading Month than by sharing a story time at the library with your child (see schedule on facing page), and then taking home an armful of books. To provide you with guidance for selecting those books, we asked some middle school students to list their favorites. Eli Denard, 7th grade, homeschooled • Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood by Nathan Hale is a graphic novel about the gory, grueling history of WWI. • Robin Hood by Howard Pyle is about an English outlaw who steals from the rich to give to the poor. • Old Yeller by Fred Gipson is a fiction book. When a stray dog comes for an unexpected stay with his family, Travis Coates reluctantly takes him in. • Magician’s Nephew by C. S. Lewis is from The Chronicles of Narnia series. In this fantasy story, which takes place in the late nineteenth century in London, two children, Polly and Digory, are sent out of this world by Digory’s evil uncle. • My Side of the Mountain by Jean C. George is an adventure fiction book set in the Catskill Mountains near Delhi, New York. It gives the fictional account of how Sam Gribley survives in the wilderness after he runs away from his home in New York City. Vivienne Hunter, 6th grade, Gulfview Middle School • Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney is a story about a child who has to go to the grocery store with his mom. It was definitely one of my favorites as a kid. • Frozen Charlotte by Alex Bell is about a girl whose best friend dies. To find out more about his death, she goes to visit her cousins in Scotland. • The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is a story about a princess whose prince doesn’t love her. She doesn’t seem to notice until a dragon burns everything down. • Cinder by Marissa Meyer is about a young cyborg, Cinder, in New Beijing who works for her stepmother and is a mechanic. There is a plague going around and her younger sister gets it. • Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. This book was probably one of the first books I read. I loved this book. It’s about a witch who finds animals whenever she loses her hat or wand.
Aydin Khan-Bridgers, 7th grade, Seacrest Country Day School • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I really loved this book. It’s a dystopia where a virtual world has practically overtaken reality. The book is fast-paced, it has interesting characters, and it was fun to learn about games and movies from the 1980s. • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I read this with my dad. It is about a hobbit, dwarfs, and a wizard who travel on a long journey to a castle. • Flotsam by David Weisner. I was in first grade when I read this book. There are only illustrations, and there are no words, so I was actually reading by interpreting the pictures. • The Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. These books are funny, and any time I read one of the books in the “Wimpy Kid” series, I laugh out loud. • Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about a boy named Brian who survives a plane crash and is stranded in the Canadian woods. Bella Schaab, 6th grade, Gulfview Middle School • Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins is about a young girl who goes to a school to learn to control her magic. • Enclave by Ann Aguirre. In a world where humans are forced underground, Duece is determined to be a warrior. Will her mysterious partner cause her to quit? • The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey. Echo travels on a quest to find the mythical firebird and hopefully stop a war against the Avicen, mysterious and feathered beings who took her in. • Paper Towns by John Green. Quentin has spent a lifetime admiring Margo from afar, so what happens when she suddenly cracks open his window and leads him on a magical rampage, only to disappear soon after? • Eighth Day by Dianne K. Salerni. Jax Aubrey discovers a secret Eighth Day with roots tracing back to Arthurian legend.
