Grown don’t mean nothing to a mother. A child is a child. They get bigger, older, but grown? What’s that suppose to mean? In my heart it don’t mean a thing. –Toni Morrison, Beloved

but the emotions don’t change all that much. Once you’re a mom, your heart secret to my family and friends that Mother’s Day is my big holiday. Being been such an honor and filled me with such joy that I truly do feel grateful and blessed every day. Mother’s Day is simply the day I get to be publicly mushy about it! My daughter Alex and I have spent pretty much every Mother’s Day together and this year will be no different. Alex has just made a big move to San Francisco (back home!) and I’ll be in California for the week. On Mother’s Day weekend I’ll be in my favorite place in the United States–Carmel and Big Sur–with my favorite person. It doesn’t get any better than that! To celebrate Mother’s Day we have articles on mommy-daughter outings, “networking” for moms and a selection of local brunch and breakfast spots for an awesome start to your Mother’s Day. We also have our yearly Vacation Bible School Directory and two articles on day trips. Assistant Publisher Stacy Nicolau contributed two articles this month: a sweet report on her son Alex’s teacher, Kathrene Pitt and an article about all of the fun May offerings at ArtisNaples. As usual, we have an extensive calendar of events to keep everyone busy. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

Directed by Gareth Edwards, this reboot of the Godzilla franchise retells the monster’s origin in modern times, but in a style that’s faithful to the Toho series of Godzilla films. The cast includes Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn. More Shakespeare than Godzilla, which is why it’s awesome.

humans carved a swath of chaos throughout the land. Maleficent’s selfless heroism during those dark times is the stuff of legends, but an unspeakable act of betrayal turned her into the dreaded Mistress of All Evil. She placed a curse on the infant daughter of the invader’s successor, and later discovered that the child may possess the power to pull her back from the dark side and restore peace to the land. The Chuggington stories keep chugging along, this time with a train named Koko who’s chosen to carry the King of Buffertonia and his dignitaries on a special tour of Chuggington. The DVD includes six episodes plus Chugger Spotlights, a Bonus Badge Quest Episode, and coloring sheets. JLA ADVENTURES: TRAPPED IN TIME ORIGINAL MOVIE Not rated. On DVD 5/20. Ok for kids 6+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. Remember the joy of watching cartoons on Saturday morning? Kids don’t get that anymore since cartoons have their own channels all day long, but this DVD rekindles that retro feeling with the Justice League of America. The story is inspired by a 1970s episode of the Superfriends where Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom go back in time to stop Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern from becoming the heroes they were

destined to become. This version takes a modern spin as young heroes from the future help stop Lex and the Legion of Doom from preventing the Kents from adopting and raising baby Clark. Retro fun, and parents familiar with the original Superfriends will like it, too. DRAGONS: RIDERS OF BERK, PART 2 Rated TV-PG. On DVD5/27. Ok for kids 5+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. The Oscar-winning “How To Train Your Dragon” franchise keeps churning with this latest DVD from the animated TV series. Lots of action and excitement for kids, and the writing and animation is right up there with the movie. DORA THE EXPLORER: DORA & BOOTS BEST FRIENDS FOREVER Rated G. On DVD 5/27. Ok for kids 3+. Reel Preview: 4 of 5 Reels. Who are BFFs? Dora and Boots, that’s who! Along with every kid who watches this DVD, because everyone is invited to be their best friends. The DVD features eight episodes of exploring, including Adventure Forest amusement park, Rainbow Rock for Best Friends’ Day, a baseball park where Boots tries to get his first hit ever, Big River where Boots loses (what else?) a boot, Tall Mountain to solve a riddle, a bedtime adventure involving a missing dinosaur, and Boots’ favorite places, including his Dad at work. JANE’S REEL RATING SYSTEM One Reel – Even the Force can’t save it. Two Reels – Coulda been a contender Three Reels – Something to talk about. Four Reels – You want the truth? Great flick! Five Reels – Wow! The stuff dreams are made of.

READING

By Michelle Shirk

Books to Match Every Summer Adventure Summer lends itself to exciting family field trips to zoos, museums, outdoor concerts and more. By choosing books that coordinate with planned activities, you can stretch your family’s fun even further. Just pick your destination from the list below, then share the corresponding books with your young children either before or after your visit! If You’re Going . . . to the Natural History Museum Even the littlest kids will be excited about fossils after listening to “Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs!” by Sandra Boynton. Boynton’s silly yet clever rhymes make this board book fun for adults to read aloud as well. For slightly older kids, start with Ian Whybrow’s “Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs,” then move on to “Harry and the Dinosaurs at the Museum.” You could even let the kids pick out some dinos of their own at the museum gift shop. If You’re Going . . . to the Art Museum It’s never too early to start talking about art! The unique “Touch the Art” series by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo allows kids to interact with features from famous paintings. For example, “Make Van Gogh’s Bed," devoted to the Impressionists and late 19th century artists, features mixed-media versions of Monet’s water lilies, Cassatt’s seashore and Cézanne’s fruit. Other titles in the series include “Pop Warhol’s Top” and “Feed Matisse’s Fish.” Or, begin with the basics and check out “The Color Kittens” by Margaret Wise Brown. This classic story is a pleasure to read and reread, thanks to Wise Brown’s clever turns-of phrase and Alice and Martin Provensen’s gorgeous illustrations. Once at the museum, you can use the story as a springboard to discuss the different colors chosen by artists as well as the colors that were combined to make them.

If You’re Going . . . to the Zoo or Aquarium Introduce your child to animals of all different kinds with “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?” by Bill Martin, Jr. Eric Carle’s vivid illustrations combine with catchy, repetitive prose to keep this favorite on the short list of must-read children’s books year after year. On the aquatic side, Deborah Diesen’s “The Pout-Pout Fish” is tough to beat. Adults and kids alike will enjoy the smart, funny rhymes and eclectic cast of characters that includes Ms. Clam, Mrs. Squid and Mr. Eight (an octopus). If you find yourselves wanting more undersea fun, move on to the sequel, “The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark.” Finally, for a book that specifically discusses a zoo trip, check out “Let’s Go to the Zoo!” by Ellen Weiss. This story features the Fisher-Price Little People, but the dozens of pop-out doors that hide animal surprises are the real attraction. Young children will want to explore this interactive book again and again. If You’re Going . . . to a Concert As children’s books go, “Animal Orchestra” by Ilo Orleans has aged exceptionally well since its original publication in 1958. This rousing, rhyming Little Golden Book will give young ones insight into some of the instruments they might expect to see. For a more modern musical tale, try “This Jazz Man” by Karen Erhardt. Her words bring the tune from “This Old Man” to life by incorporating jazz instruments, sounds and terms. At the story’s end, Erhardt offers short biographies of nine great jazz artists. It’s impossible to describe how much fun this book is, but after one time through you’ll be hooked!

If You’re Going . . . on Vacation Traveling by plane? “My First Airplane Ride” by Patricia Hubbell uses simple language to help little ones understand exactly what to expect from each step of the process. Traveling by train? Revisit Watty Piper’s classic “The Little Engine that Could,” which is chock-full of both trains and motivational messages. There are a currently a number of different versions of this book available on Amazon.com, so read the product details and reviews to find one that is a good fit for your family. Depending on your destination, the “Good Night Our World” series (www.goodnightourworld.com) by Adam Gamble may also be a perfect pick. These simple board books depict popular sights in places such as Chicago, Michigan, Denver, Florida Keys and Washington, D.C. Think of them as guidebooks for the 0-5 set.

Wherever you’re headed this summer, your journey’s sure to be better with a good book. Happy summer reading! MICHELLE SHIRK is an attorney, freelance writer and proud mother of one. 7 Tips for Fabulous Family

Day Trips

Are the kids restless? How about you? It might be time for a change in routine or scenery. Day trips are a wonderful and often inexpensive option to family vacations, and the possibilities are endless. I rely on day trips, especially during the summer, to break up the boredom that sets in rather quickly. Plan On It: Make getting out of the house and away a priority. Part of making day trips happen is commitment. Set aside one day of the month that you can regularly stick to, like the last Saturday of every month. Don't work? Consider a day during the week, when destinations might not be as busy. Discuss it with all family members and add it to the calendar.

Brainstorm Ideas: Explore the options. Be sure to consider and include your children's preferences and interests. Consider indoors and outdoors options. My kids range in ages of nineteen down to ten, two girls and two boys. Their interests are vast and ever changing as they age. We've traveled a few hours to explore zoos and museums, fish or kayak, walk through an auto show, ride a train into a large city for the purpose of seeing a specific exhibition or enjoying a cultural festival, learn about the Thoroughbred horse, watch cows being milked and cheese being made, walk and roll down the hot sand dunes and much more. Keep a Binder: You'll likely find that you travel within a few hours radius, as we do. I keep a binder with section dividers so that I can include information about the areas we frequent, mindful of free admittance days and special events and festivals. I am on the mailing list for surrounding counties' event planners, which I keep with my binder. Check the Neapolitan Family website at neafamily.com for articles on attractions within a few hours of Naples. Include plenty of indoor options! Think Local: With gas prices continuing to rise, consider a day trip within an hour of Naples. Options increase during the summer months, when the majority of kids are out of school. We take advantage of what local communities offer by checking out their websites and links. If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Ft. Myers, be sure to read our article on page 16-17 of this issue that outlines 5 great options for family fun. Think Seasonal: My kids love to hike and picnic. One recurring excursion we take is to state parks, where the entrance fee is nominal. We pack food, snacks and drinks for the day, along with plenty of blankets to sit and nap on, as well as some cards, sketchpads and colored pencils. A favorite pastime is skipping rocks and one of my youngest is very good at it. She also brings her bird book along. Remember Your Diaper Bag Era: Perhaps you still are using a diaper bag. My diaper bag was a great "training" ground for always being prepared. It was packed and in the car at all times. I know I relied on mine well past the time I needed it, adjusting it to more of a toddler bag, then a kids "go-to" bag. I still carry a bag in the car year-round. I also have a first-aid kit with bug repellant and sunscreen (make sure everything is replenished and updated), gallon sized bags and wipes for mishaps, as well as old towels and a few umbrellas. Make the Most of Your Time: We're up and away first thing in the morning, often deciding on our destination as we pull out of the driveway. I check my tires, fluids, and gas up the car the evening before. My kids keep packed backpacks in their closets. So, we move out as soon as they've dressed and brushed their teeth. Sometimes we just grab breakfast on the way to our destination, as an extra "treat." We return home late–tired, dirty, content, and reconnected through another family experience. I often look back, or into my rearview mirror, and I see sleepy heads resting on siblings' shoulders. And I know my kids will have another memory to share with each other. JUDY M. Naples Teacher Using Simple Technique To Help Students Receives Local and National Recognition

W

hen Naples mom and author Glennon Melton walked into Kathrene Pitt’s classroom for a little “tutoring” so she could help her son with his math homework, each woman left with a gift that would change both of their worlds. As the conversation shifted from math to the world of fifth graders, the Sea Gate Elementary School teacher described her strategy for recognizing the isolated children in her classroom. Every month she distributes a team card to students where they can list the names of students they would like to sit with or to know better. They also can take the opportunity to send a compliment to another student or nominate a classmate as citizen of the week. While the kids did not always know why they were filling out these cards, Pitt was observing patterns and changes in the class re-

Pitt hopes that people will recognize how a simple method of communication and team building can help adults be more aware of their children and children become more aware of each other.

lationships and discovering who consistently or suddenly was not being mentioned. Pitt began this technique right after the shootings at Columbine 15 years ago, in order to build a sense of community among all of her students and to learn which pupils may feel a lack of connection with the others. “Sometimes students appear lonely, but are actually more private,” Pitt explains. “Providing them with work connections, people who ask for them, people who they ask for, improves their social comfort level. More importantly, it provides opportunities for those around them to include and expand their social skills as well.” In her 30 years of teaching elementary education Pitt, who retires this year, has received awards before as both a Teacher of Excellence and a Teacher of Distinction through the Education Foundation-Champions for

Learning Golden Apple program; yet it was not until her final year of teaching that her community-building practice was recognized. A message of hope Melton took Pitt’s gift of a story to her laptop and wove it into a beautiful message of hope and caring that had her blog followers clicking “share” several million times over. The viral post caught the attention of local and national media such as the Today Show, which aired a segment on the teacher and her wing girl. The media coverage caught the attention of Jewish Federation of Collier County, a local organization who honored Pitt with its Stand Up for Justice Grant, an award that recognizes educators for their efforts in developing initiatives that counter bullying and bigotry, according to Executive Director David Willens. Pitt hopes that Melton’s publicity will result in people recognizing how a simple method of communication and team building can help adults be more aware of their children and children become more aware of each other. The post also brought Melton deserved recognition for her powerful writing and motivational speaking. “A writer is the photographer of words,” Pitt says, and describes Melton’s words as the wings that carried her ideas. Due to all of the attention Pitt’s classroom has received, the students are more aware of her motives but she hopes that they continue to respect the process. “This isn’t about ‘certain’ children,” Pitt explains. “It is about making all our connections work until we are happy to be with each other.” To read the original blog post by Glennon Doyle Melton, go to http:// momastery.com/blog/2014/01/. Her book, Carry On Warrior: The Power of Embracing your Messy Beautiful Life is a New York Times Bestseller and is available in paperback. GCU Public Media has announced that Digit, the adorable math-wiz cyborg from the Emmy Award winning PBS series “Cyberchase” will be at the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples on Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. “Cyberchase” fans will be able to meet Digit and see the premiere of “The Cyberchase Movie” before it airs on WGCU TV. Fans can also participate in “Cyberchase” activities and receive giveaways. Information regarding admission fees to C’mon is available at cmon.org. WGCU and C’mon also will host a free “Cyberchase” workshop for teachers on Monday, June 9 from 9 am to 2pm. Each teacher will receive an educator’s toolkit (including lesson plans and video clips), “Cyberchase” incentives for their classroom and more. Breakfast and lunch are included. Seating is limited for this free teacher workshop. Visit the calendar at www.cmon.org to register online. The popular PBS KIDS math series is celebrating its 100th episode with an eco-themed adventure: “The Cyberchase Movie” Guest star Rico Rodriguez (Manny from “Modern Family”) joins Christopher Lloyd and Gilbert Gottfried when the first-ever movie from “Cyberchase,” the Emmy Award®-winning series airs Sunday June 29 at 9:30 am on WGCU TV, PBS for Southwest Florida. The future of Cyberspace is at stake in the one-hour special. Hacker and his bumbling henchbots Buzz and Delete are drilling inside the nature preserve Ecotopia when they carelessly set off a slime geyser, destroying many animals’ habitats and causing overcrowding. Matt, Jackie, Inez and Digit are called in to rescue the animals and restore harmony to Ecotopia. They team up with Ollie (voiced by Rodriguez), a Junior Ranger, and quickly learn that harmony on Ecotopia isn’t their only problem. Can the kids restore Ecotopia, rescue their friends and prevent Cyberspace from being lost to Hacker forever? The movie’s environmental focus builds on the “Cyberchase” mission to inspire kids with a love of math. By modeling problemsolving and making practical connections between math and science, the program give kids tools to explore their world. To extend these connections, “Cyberchase” has also created a series of real-world games exploring the environmental topics of keystone species, waste reduction and solar power, available for families to print and play at home at pbskids.org/cyberchase. MOTHER’S DAY

By Christina Katz

Mommy-Daughter Time

10 Outings That Won’t Break The Bank

M

y daughter remembers experiences more than things. She is quick to recall a playful adventure with a parent or a party with her pals

than she is to remember time she spent alone engaged in imaginative play. She has always had a vivid imagination and plenty of toys for exercising her wildest imaginings, but the bottom line is she enjoys sharing experiences with others more than she enjoys playing alone in her room. And these are the stories she recalls over and over. As a full-time work-at-home mom, I spend plenty of time with my daughter. But my challenge during these formative tween-teen years is to make more of our time adventurous and playful, because we’ve got logistical and practical covered on a daily basis. And since daddy is usually the fun playmate and mom is often the task-masterchauffeur, we need to plan our fun or it won’t happen. So I’m sharing ten outings moms can enjoy with tween daughters, which require little or no planning:

1.

Relax at a day spa. Sometimes local spas offer discount packages off season. Call in advance to find out when specials are offered so you can take advantage of them. While you are inquiring, ask about any two-for-one or discount packages for moms and daughters. You might plant a seed for their next promotion. You can also check groupon.com or livingsocial.com for special one-time offers at great rates. If a spa trip is out of the budget, create your own spa day at home. A quick trip to Ulta in Mercato and you will find all the makings for your spa day.

2.

Rediscover cruising the mall. Maybe you hate shopping at the mall. Or maybe you love it. Try to scroll back in your memory and remember how you felt about it when you were a tween and teen. Remember how your own mother’s behavior thrilled or didn’t thrill you? Then perhaps you will be ready to have a grander time strolling the mall with your daughter, sharing mall stories from your child-

44

neafamily.com

NEAPOLITANfamily • May 2014

4/23/14 4:01 PM

hood. Don’t forget to hit her favorite food court stall and all the teeny bopper shops she loves. You can do this, mom!

3.

Go ice skating. You might make a bit of a fool of yourself if it’s been a long time since you’ve been on skates but you’ll both have a blast during free skate time at Germain. A big bonus is that you’ll get to spend a hot afternoon in the cool rink and wear a sweater in May!

4.

Squeeze in a movie matinee. This works well for a spontaneous escape on a rainy day that has you both snipping at each other. Next time you squabble, calmly walk away and pull up the Silverspot show times. Then breeze back into the room and tell her you’ll call a truce, if she will go to the movies with you–popcorn and a favorite beverage included. Once you sink into those cushy leather seats you’ll both forget what you were disagreeing about.

5.

Venture downtown for a special lunch. Dress up a bit and then head to Fifth Avenue or Third Street, pick out a restaurant that you haven’t tried and enjoy a “grown up” lunch with your daughter. After lunch, spend the afternoon window-shopping boutiques.

6.

Pop in for pedicures. This is another quickie getaway and special treat that doesn’t have to break the bank. You may find the chair massage is almost worth the price of the pedicure itself. Bonus idea: take her to a drugstore on the way to the salon and let her purchase the hottest new color. Then she can take care of her own touch-ups.

7.

Forage for treasure at a flea market, craft show, or farmer’s market. My daughter enjoys doing this, even though you’ll never get her to admit it. The key is to make

the trip about her, not me. If I am dragging her along because I am looking for something, that’s a different type of trip. But when my focus is on helping her discover what she admires, it becomes a more supportive and encouraging adventure. Give her ten bucks to spend on an item for herself, and spend ten bucks on enough snacks to keep you both going for a couple hours.

8.

Go on a your favorite type of tour together. This could be a home tour, a farm tour, a historical tour, a bus tour, or a museum tour, just to name a few possibilities. It’s fun and engaging to learn new things together. And you’ll be amazed how much more you can appreciate any experience the experience when it’s fueled with interesting information and stories. Suddenly architectural style jumps out at you or brush techniques become apparent. Have fun comparing personal preferences.

9.

Paddle the afternoon away. There are a lot of options locally for kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals. If you don’t have much experience, take a guided tour for

beginners. No matter which you choose, the two of you will have some uninterrupted time to chat, enjoy nature and get some exercise.

10.

Express yourselves at an art studio. Sit side-by-side and create pots or tiles at Earth & Fire. Or check out other local artisan shops for an array of choices. Check Joann’s or Michael’s for a basic knitting class, painting or collage workshop. Be sure to do this on a day that is otherwise unscheduled, so you can relax into the experience and enjoy the creative process thoroughly. Maybe grab a frozen yogurt afterwards to extend the fun. I may never be as hilarious as daddy, that’s true. But I share things with our daughter my husband never will. And these conversations happen best when my daughter and I kick back, relax, and simply enjoy each other’s company. Christina Katz’s mother could not only handle the mall, she also knew just where to find the best doughnut or ice cream cone treat after shopping. Christina’s latest book is Permission Granted, 45 Reasons To Micro-publish.

FOR M

MOTHER’S DAY

By Christa Melnyk Hines

Moms

Networking 101 for

Creating and maintaining a thriving, balanced social network is an empowering and healthy way to care for yourself, and by extension, your family. Why support matters. Isolation can contribute to feelings of depression and can negatively impact the entire family. In a research study commissioned on behalf of Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) International by the Barna Group in 2010, researchers found that mothers believe they are more optimistic and resilient to life's daily stresses and occasional crises when surrounded by a community of support. Even short bursts of time spent with friends can boost a woman's oxytocin levels, a natural hormone that decreases stress and anxiety.

Join a mothers' group. Moms' groups come in a variety of sizes, philosophies and commitment levels. Shop around to find a group that fits your personality, lifestyle and parenting approach. Get a feel for the landscape by visiting the group as a guest. Ask the membership director questions like: • How often does the group meet? • Does the group schedule mom-only events? • If mom-only activities are scheduled during the day, is childcare provided?

• •

What types of play groups and activities does the group plan? How does the group support members? (For example, educational speakers? Babysitting co-ops?)

Schedule activities. Losing yourself in the daily rotation of feedings, naps, baths and playtime may be fine for awhile. However, injecting your calendar with activities throughout the week for both you and your child will energize you, give you something to look forward to and help you feel connected

Whether you are a new mom, new to your community or simply feeling isolated, you may wonder how to connect with other moms like you. 46

to the world outside your home. When you give exercise, a meet up with other moms or a lunch date with a friend a place on your calendar, you’re more likely to follow through with your plans. Not sure where to begin? Check with your local library and bookstore for story hours and seek out "Mommy and Me" groups, which run the gamut from physical activities to musical education. If you work full-time, talk to other working moms about meeting up at the park or an indoor play area for a Saturday morning play date. Click into social media. Still in your pjs at 3:30 in the afternoon after walking the floor all night with your colicky baby or a sick child? During the toughest times of parenthood, we can find comfort knowing others can relate and we aren't alone. Christine, a mom of three, says Facebook helps her feel more supported. "Especially when other moms share their 'real' moments about being a mom. I think, 'Hey, I'm not so crazy after all–I've done that, too!'" Thanks to social media like Facebook, Pinterest, MeetUp.com and mommy blogs, you can complement your offline groups with online friends and click into the land of the living anytime. No shower required!

Get active. Schedule time for an exercise class when your spouse is home or join a gym that offers quality childcare. Not only are fitness classes a fun way to get in shape, you'll feel mentally refreshed, more patient, and more optimistic in general. And the more you go, the more you'll get to know the other participants, which will help make you more accountable to meet your fitness goals. If a gym isn't in the budget, find a friend or two to walk with a few times a week, either around a park, the neighborhood or a mall on inclement-weather days. As your child grows older and less patient sitting in a stroller, promise time during or at the end of the walk for him to play at a park or indoor play area. Or your child can rollerblade or skateboard while you walk briskly. Pursue your interests. Tempted to push personal interests aside due to family demands? Constantly putting yourself last can lead to unhealthy feelings of resentment. Negotiate time with your spouse to pursue your hobbies and other passions. Invite friends to join you, whether for a gardening or cooking class, a book club or another fun activity. Create a calendar. Take your schedule as seriously as you do your family's. Make ap-

pointments with yourself, including fitness classes, walks with friends, moms' meetings, a solo trip to that boutique down the street, and so on. Sure, sometimes a sick child will throw a last-minute wrench in your plans, but isn't flexibility one of the first lessons moms learn? When necessary, communicate your appointments with your spouse so he isn't caught unaware. Seek balance. Stretching yourself in too many directions is just as harmful as functioning in isolation. Strive to balance your needs with your family's needs. "I recognize that I can only fulfill so much in one day, and maybe I have fulfilled my purpose for that day by spending time with a friend instead," says Angie, a mom of two. "I think recognizing what the stressors are is the first step, then rationalizing if they are worth the anxiety and energy." Seek out people who energize you and look for opportunities that inspire you. In no time, you'll find yourself in the thick of a buzzing, supportive community. After witnessing the unthinkable at 12 years old – her mother shot at the hands of her stepfather – Velma quit school and started picking in the fields of Immokalee to support her brothers and sisters. Velma remained upbeat and had a family of her own, but then experienced multiple, devastating losses and trauma and was diagnosed with a debilitating health issue. She felt suicide was the only way to escape her sadness, fear and pain. For her children’s sake, she finally asked for help from the David Lawrence Center. Here she found hope, healing and tools to cope with her mental and physical health problems by working with a case manager, therapist, and utilizing the Center’s new, innovative telemedicine technology to meet routinely with her psychiatrist in Naples remotely from the Immokalee f o r M e noffice. t a l We l l n e s s

Her Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Velma is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community.

f o r m e n t a l We l l n e s s

A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. When you or someone you love needs help, call on the highly compassionate, committed and competent professionals of the David Lawrence Center to inspire you to move beyond the crisis towards life-changing wellness.

aples’ youngest musicians and vocalists will be showcasing their talent in concerts at Artis-Naples throughout the month of May. The Naples Youth Symphonia, the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the Youth Chorus are three student ensembles that give area students an extraordinary opportunity to rehearse and perform on the stage at Artis-Naples with the nationally acclaimed Naples Philharmonic. These ensembles often serve as a pre-professional training, according to Bonnie Thayer, education director at Artis-Naples, as many students go on to be accepted as music majors at many top music schools around the country. The Naples Youth Symphonia is a string ensemble made up of 54 students ages 10-18 who rehearse nearly every Saturday during the school year. Led by core violinist Gregg Anderson of the Naples Philharmonic, students learn to perform classical, pops and movie soundtrack selections. Tracey Albert, mom of seventh-grade

cellist Bryce, says that the Youth Symphonia teaches the students independence and team work as they must work in small groups to practice every week. “It’s oldfashioned hard work,” she says. “There’s no ‘app’ that makes practicing an instrument any easier.” The Youth Symphonia will perform a free concert in the Daniels Pavilion on May 3 at 11:00 a.m. during Community Day. Side-by-side Many members of the Youth Symphonia go on to join he Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (NPYO), an intensive training ground for middle and high school musicians who rehearse and perform alongside the Naples Philharmonic, according to Thayer. “Can you imagine,” she says, “what an experience it is for middle and high school age students to sit elbow to elbow with and play concerts with these musicians?” Auditions are held twice per year and students rehearse every Sunday and receive additional coaching from Naples

Philharmonic musicians September through May. The NPYO performs free concerts at Naples High School twice per year. On May 18 at 7:00 p.m. the 61-member orchestra will be performing in a “Side-bySide” concert with the Naples Philharmonic, and on May 24 at 2:00 p.m. the group will present its student recital. Young songbirds from the age of seven through high school may audition at two different times during the year for the opportunity to sing in the Youth Chorus, alongside the Naples Philharmonic in Hayes Hall. Graduating seniors get the privilege of performing a solo at the end of the year. Eighth grader Sophia Zizzi, who

has sung with the Youth Chorus since she was seven years old, says that she likes that “everyone is equal” in the ensemble and that she has made many friends there. Performing with accompaniment by the Naples Philharmonic is “amazing,” Sophia says. “You feel one with the music … and you get to be a part of this group of amazing artists.” The 100-member chorus rehearses every Saturday and will be performing its spring concert at Artis-Naples on May 4 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15. Magic Carpet Artis-Naples also offers the popular Magic Carpet series, which provides the children as young as three years old with an opportunity to explore music, up close. These interactive 45-minute performances by members of the Naples Philharmonic and members of the youth ensembles introduce children ages 3 to 9 to a family of instruments while sitting on a “magic carpet” square on the floor. Afterward, the children have the opportunity to meet the musicians and see the instruments up close. The brass instruments will star on May 24, while May 31 will feature the crowd-pleasing percussion group. The whole family can explore the entire Artis-Naples campus, with art and activities for all ages on Community Day on Sunday, May 3. Free activities include live music, an instrument petting zoo for kids, and access to all museum exhibitions and galleries. In addition to the Youth Symphonia concert there will be a free Cinco de Mayo performance by the Naples Philharmonic with Mariachis and traditional Mexican music at 2:00 p.m. in Hayes Hall. Scholarships are available for some students in each of the ensemble programs.

Common Wisdom

Be kind to people and animals too. Laugh a lot. Just tell the truth. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. Clean up your own mess. Wish upon a star. Please your dentist and floss your teeth. Read a good book – or two (and read to a child!). Good health is priority #1. Lend a hand. Give blood. Call your mom and dad, or kids. Take the dog for long walks and smile at who you meet. Be a friend. Don’t drink and drive. Let art color your life. Be gentle with the earth. Cut the drama and don’t go to extremes. Never look back unless you are planning to go there. Be thankful. “Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers & sisters, aunts & cousins, but only one mother in the whole world”
