THIS MONTH: Summer Camp
Nothing makes a parent more eager to register for summer camp than a week of spring break. Our week consisted of too much fast food, late nights of Netflix, a trip to the Collier County Fair, a few movies, and a lot of sleeping in. Not that my kids were complaining, but I knew by the end of the week I needed to work on our summer calendar. Summer vacation has its dilemmas at every age: working parents of young children need consistent full-day camps. Stay-at-home parents need to keep their kids’ schedule interesting and active, while getting a much-needed break to get things done. Parents of tweens and teens have the challenge of finding appropriate camps and summer programs for their age group, when many of them are too young to work or drive. We have compiled a summer camp directory of great options for children of all ages, interests, and abilities and hope it will help you plan a summer that your kids will love. Is your child going to sleepaway camp for the first time? I have eight years of experience packing camp duffels, and I am pleased to share my Ultimate Packing List on page 28. This summer I will be putting that list to good use as I pack my youngest child for sleepaway camp, my son for a summer counselor-in-training (CIT) position at the same camp, and creating a new list as I pack my oldest daughter to leave for her first year of college. Is your camper too old for camp? We found several great camps offering CIT positions, which combine all the fun of summer camp with leadership and work experience, and in many cases, much needed volunteer hours. In addition to all of the resources in this issue, we are excited to again sponsor the Mercato Summer Camp Fair on April 7. Stop by to meet area camp directors in person, gather information, and get ready for summer 2019!

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
By Jennifer Kupiec
Working to #KeepCollierSafe
W
e’re taught from the time we’re young about consequences. “If I cry, mom comes to feed me.” “When I fall and skin my knee, it hurts.” “And when I draw with lipstick on mommy’s new dress, I may get a time out.” Consequences are a part of life. When it comes to school security, there have been some changes – changes that parents and students need to be aware of as they can have major consequences on a child’s future. Collier County Public Schools rolled out a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) in February dealing with school threats. If you have a child in grades 6-12, you should have received communication regarding the PSA. It discusses the consequences of making a threat, whether it be verbal or written, on social media or otherwise. Students are now potentially facing felony charges for such threats.
Understanding the consequences and having conversations with your child ultimately can save them from making a careless decision. Help us ensure your children understand the consequences of their actions. Statements that were once considered a joke could have serious consequences that will impact a student’s future. To watch the PSA, you can visit www.collierschools. com/keepcolliersafe.
Another PSA that will be coming shortly will illustrate the consequences of bringing a weapon onto a school campus. Pursuant to F.S. 1006.07(2)(l), students determined to have brought a firearm or weapon to school, to any school function, or onto any school-sponsored transportation, or students determined to have made threats or false reports, will be expelled for a minimum of one full year. We strongly encourage parents to have this discussion with their children and regularly check their belongings, including backpacks. Understanding the consequences and having conversations with your children ultimately can save them from making a careless decision. Again, visit collierschools. com/keepcolliersafe for more information. Working together, we can #KeepCollierSafe and keep our students on a pathway to a successful and bright future.

EARTH DAY
W
By Anna Snyder
We’re Recycling Wrong Here’s How to Do it Right
hen you consider the amount of waste the average person in Florida generates each day (approximately five pounds, according to Waste Management), it makes sense to recycle everything you possibly can, right? The obvious answer is: OF COURSE! However, many of us may be unwittingly sabotaging our own efforts at keeping trash out of the landfill. “Collier County is working hard to exceed the state’s 75% recycling goal by 2020, and every little bit counts,” said Margie Hapke, public information coordinator for Collier County. “When families recycle correctly, they contribute to our goal of increasing recycling rates. When they recycle incorrectly, it is a missed opportunity to capture those recyclables toward the county’s recycling rates.” Not only does incorrect recycling increase waste, it costs an enormous amount of money. Moreover, this type of contamination negates the efforts of families who recycle correctly. According to Dawn McCormick, director of communications in Florida for Waste Management, “When families place non-recyclables in curbside recycling containers, those items slow down machinery and contaminate the good recyclables. Employees must climb down
and clear machinery. In the last several years, we have seen a 25-30% increase in recycling rates due to larger carts, which is positive. However, we really need to get back to cleaner recycling.” An estimated 90% of residential households participate in curbside recycling programs. While this statistic is encouraging, it doesn’t tell the whole story. “A lot of families are ‘wish-cyclers’,” McCormick explained. “They engage in the recycling process by saying, ‘Well, I hope this is recyclable,’ and then placing the item in their curbside bin. However, this costs money and contaminates good recyclables. Our motto for residential recyclers is: ‘When in doubt, throw it out.’ We really need to get back to cleaner recycling: clean and dry paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans.” By putting non-recyclables in our curbside recycling bins, we are hindering the overall recycling process. “Once recycling has been collected curbside in Collier County, it’s put in semitractor trailers and taken to Waste Management’s Reuter Recycling Center in Pembroke Pines for processing,” said Hapke. “A visual inspection is made of each load. A load that is determined to contain more than 20% contamination can be rejected from the plant. Those materials then must
be taken to a landfill and treated as municipal solid waste (i.e., buried like regular garbage). When that happens, not only are the recyclable materials lost, it costs the company in terms of having to pay tipping fees at the landfill. In addition, the efforts of the people who recycle correctly are wasted because others are careless or confused about what is and isn’t recyclable.” The most common items people place in their curbside recycling carts that cause contamination are: plastic bags and plastic film packaging, Styrofoam, hoses, plastic toys, yard debris, metal objects, coolers, and food. To help with the confusion over what can and cannot be recycled, we’ve asked the experts for clarification on the items that cause the most contamination. Plastics “Plastic shopping bags and film plastic (things like bread bags, sandwich bags, etc.) should not be placed in the recycling cart,” Hapke explained. “Local grocery stores and some big box stores offer plastic bag recycling. Recycling the single use plastic shopping bags through these programs is much more efficient.” Some stores will accept plastic film, such as the kind that encloses toilet paper and paper towels, but call the store first to verify ex-

actly what types of plastic are accepted. And never place plastic film/shrink wrap in your recycling bin. What about those plastic pillows included in every Amazon.com box? “Plastic air pillows used for packaging are made from plastic film and are not recyclable in our curbside program, so they should not be placed in recycling carts. Plastic packaging material can be reused or donated to local packaging stores for reuse,” Hapke clarified. And, just in case there are any questions, Hapke reiterated: “No plastic bags or any kind of plastic film – even if it has the recycle symbol on it – should be placed in recycling carts.” Bottles and Caps There are other items that may cause confusion. Plastic water bottles, along with their caps, are indeed recyclable. Additionally, plastic laundry detergent bottles, along with plastic soap and household product bottles – and their lids – are recyclable. Glass jars and bottles are recyclable, but only if the jar is cleaned out completely. Hapke stated, “Glass jars should be rinsed or wiped out before placing in recycling cart. If a jar isn’t cleaned out completely, it will contaminate the whole bin.” Moreover, the metal lids on glass jars ARE recyclable, as long as they are clean and dry. Cardboard boxes and paper According to Hapke, “It’s not necessary to remove the labels and tape, however; we do recommend taking off any loose tape so it doesn’t cause issues with other materials. From a personal identity security aspect, it’s best to black out the names and addresses on the labels.” Pizza boxes are not
recyclable, unless they are completely clean and free from grease (which they usually are not). “At best, you may be able to tear off the uncontaminated top of the box and recycle that, but no grease or food contaminated cardboard should be placed in the recycling cart.” For cardboard boxes that contain a mixture of cardboard and plastic you must remove the plastic and then place the cardboard in the curbside cart.
“No plastic bags or any kind of plastic film – even if it has the recycle symbol on it – should be placed in recycling carts.” –Margie Hapke, Waste Management
What about junk mail and other types of paper? “Mixed paper like junk mail, magazines, envelopes, Post-It notes, and other paper products can be placed in your recycling container. Used paper towels, napkins, and tissues are not accepted in your recycling container. Envelopes with plastic windows may be placed in recycling carts.” When it comes to wrapping paper
and tissue paper: “Only clean, dry paper is accepted in your recycling cart; no foil or flocked wrapping paper is allowed. Tissue wrapping paper is acceptable,” Hapke said. Styrofoam As mentioned above, it may surprise Collier County families to learn that we cannot recycle most Styrofoam products. So, Styrofoam coffee cups and Styrofoam packaging material are NOT recyclable. However, the county encourages residents to recycle certain Styrofoam. Confused yet? Hapke offered clarification: “Collier County’s recycling program allows the recycling of the foam trays that meat and vegetables are packaged on (remove and throw away the clear plastic shrink wrap) and egg cartons only. Styrofoam cups, plates, carry-out food clam shells, and packaging materials are not accepted.” Unfortunately, there is no Styrofoam recycling program offered in Collier County at this time. Batteries Don’t try to recycle batteries in your curbside cart! Rather, Collier County accepts all batteries at county Recycling Drop-Off Centers. The best, most effective way to recycle is to only recycle items you are SURE about. Otherwise, you risk contamination of your bin and other’s clean recyclables, which actually hurts the environment and uses unnecessary resources. Don’t engage in wish-cycling. When in doubt, throw it out! Magnets or brochures detailing what we can recycle are available from the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Division at 239-252-7575.

amp has become a staple of the summer season. Each year, millions of children, youth, and adults head to the hills, lakes, valleys, and parks to participate in the time-honored tradition of camp. And, while most people easily conjure up images of campfires and canoes, there is a lot more to the camp experience. Here are 10 of the things you may not have known about the camp experience. 10. Camp is older than dirt, almost literally. The camp experience started in 1861. The secret behind the longevity? “Camps are adapting to meet the needs of today’s campers,” said Tom Rosenberg, president/CEO of the American Camp Association (ACA). “The impact camp has on campers, the life-changing experience, has remained after all these years.” 9. Camp is worth its weight in gold, and then some! Camp is life-changing – developing friendships and memories that last well beyond the final campfire. And, there is a camp for literally every budget. Often camps offer special pricing or financial assistance, and some qualify for tax credits or for payment with pre-tax dollars. 8. Green is “zen.” Research shows that first-hand experiences with nature, like those at camp, reduce stress in children and help them better handle stress in the future. In addition to teaching children how to be good stewards of the environment, camps are teaching children how to enjoy the world around them and take a minute to
NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2019
breathe deep and feel the nature. 7. Mommies and Daddies do it, too. Camp is not just for children and youth. There are family camps and camps for single adults, senior adults, and any adult that wants to relax and enjoy all camp has to offer. Adults benefit from the same sense of community, authentic relationships, and self-discovery that children do. Camp is an excellent vacation option, allowing adults to try a variety of new activities in a safe and fun environment. 6. Camp is a great place to try new activities and hobbies. Afraid of rock walls? According to ACA research, 74% of campers reported that they tried new activities at camp that they were afraid to do at first. And, those activities often leave lasting impressions. Some 63% of parents reported that their child continued new activities from camp after returning home. 5. Manners matter, and often linger. Camp teaches more than just archery or lanyard making. The entire experience is made of teachable moments. Perhaps one of the biggest is how to live with a group of people. Campers learn to pick up after themselves, respect each other’s property, and to say “Please” and “Thank You.” 4. Veggies taste better with friends. Hollywood and novels may have given camp food a bad reputation, but in truth, camps are constantly exploring healthy food options, and often are at the forefront of things like allergy specific di-
ets, healthy snack options, and vegetarian meals. According to an ACA survey, more than 90% of responding camps indicated that healthy eating and physical activity are important or very important issues. 3. If everyone else went to camp, maybe there’s something to it. Camp has played an important role in the lives of some of the most talented people in history. ACA’s family resource site offers a list of notable campers – including business leaders, celebrities, artists, and great thinkers. 2. Camp gets those neurons pumping. Education reform debate and concern over summer learning loss have pushed academic achievement into the spotlight. Research shows that participation in intentional programs, like camp, during summer months helps stem summer learning loss. In addition, camp provides ample opportunity for developmental growth, which is a precursor to academic achievement. And, because of the hands-on nature of camp, often children who struggle in traditional education settings do well at camp. 1. Camp builds leaders for the 21st century and beyond. Independence, resiliency, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to relate to other people – these are the skills that tomorrow’s leaders will need, and the skills camp has been adept at building for 150 years. SUMMER CAMP
By Stacy Nicolau
The Ultimate Packing Primer
What to Bring to Camp That’s Not on the List
S
ince the summer 2011, one or more of my three kids have gone to sleepaway camp. This have given me eight summers to refine and reinvent the camp packing list. Whether your child is going for one week or eight, my ultimate packing tips will help you in addition to the packing list that your camp will send you. You can start packing in April or the week before departure; I have done both with similar outcomes. These are the tips that worked best for my kids. Packing supplies Ziploc Space Bags. These bags are like magic. They are giant zippered plastic bags that come in a variety of sizes, with a valve that you can either use a vacuum to suck out the air, or you can just sit on them to squeeze out the air. Use extra large bags for bedding, sleeping bag, and towels, and the smaller ones for each type of clothing. Label them so that your child knows how to repack, and show them how to squeeze out the air. Best of all, they are reusable!
Nylon duffel bags. This is personal preference, based on experience, of course. The first couple of years, I sent expensive footlocker trunks. The kids loved decorating them. But they are super heavy to transport and expensive to ship, and they fit almost nothing. Then, I spent a few years using rolling duffels (two per child). Both the trunks and the duffels almost always came back damaged. Now I use nylon Samsonite bags. Once they are emptied, they can easily be folded up and put away. Pop up boxes. These boxes from Tar28
neafamily.com
get fold flat for packing, then pop up for your camper to use as containers to store clothes and personal items under the bed or on the shelves in the cabin. Clear plastic snap top boxes. For stationery, pens, fabric markers, Sharpies, and accessories. Essential camp items that likely are not on your list Mini lantern or reading light and batteries (in addition to a flashlight). Sport sandals with back straps (Teva, Keen, or Chacos) are indispensable when walking from wet to dry activities and are comfortable enough for light hiking. Because they are adjustable, they often last for one or two size changes. Sneakers tend to get wet and stay damp. Crazy Creek chair to sit in for campfires and other activities that take place sitting on the ground (available at Bass Pro Shops, everythingsummercamp.com, and your camp store).
What you don’t actually need from the camp packing list Two full sets of bed linens. Pack one set and save space on linens. My campers never changed their linens during camp, so the extra sheets and pillowcases went unused. True story: I was unpacking my son’s duffel after the first year he went to camp and I found all of his linens UNUSED. I knew this because they were still folded perfectly (including the bottom sheet!). I found out all of the boys in his cabin only used their sleeping bags! Towels. Send more towels than suggested. Nothing ever dries completely at camp, especially towels, and they use multiple towels each day. (Showers, water sports, pool/lake). Choose thinner, old towels that can be rolled and save space. Forget about the washcloths and hand towels. They come back unused. 2-3 pairs of pants or jeans. Make this one pair. The boys will wear shorts ALWAYS, and the girls will stick to leggings, NEAPOLITANfamily • April 2019
Items that enhance the cabin experience Bring extra stuff to share with cabin mates during rest hour or to dress up in for programs. Note: most camps do not allow food or candy, as they can attract bugs and wild animals. • nail polish and remover • face paint • old costumes, tutus, fun leggings • onesies and footed pajamas in silly animal or character styles • patriotic and camo clothes • fun sunglasses, hats, and beads (pack extra for cabin mates!) • bandanas in multiple colors • white and black t-shirts (helpful when creating a cabin costume) • cowboy hat and boots/booties • scissors, duct tape, and tacks for costumes and hanging “cabin decor.” • Sharpies or fabric markers for decorating white shirts and for adding names to new camp t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items bought in the camp store • crayons, markers, paper, journals, and coloring books • card games.

which take up less space. • Two sweatshirts. My daughter suggests four. No matter how far south the camp is, nights and early mornings are always chilly. • Egg crate foam mattress topper. Many camps suggest this and it takes up a lot of packing space. Most kids are fine for the short stay on camp mattresses; opt for a cushy mattress pad instead, or buy the egg crate at a local store before camp drop off.

LEARNING NEVER LOOKED SO FUN! Not all classrooms have walls and whiteboards. Not all learning is confined to library desks and reading corners. Sometimes, learning is much more experiential than that. Sometimes, learning takes place between rocks and trees, in crisp mountain lakes and across forested trails. Sometimes, we learn best while making new friends, trying new things, experiencing new thrills and discovering new worlds.
