THIS MONTH: The Holidays

It was only last week when I first realized that December closes out another decade. I remember 20 years ago, when we all were frantically preparing for Y2K, and partying like it was 1999. Well, because it was actually 1999. The ball dropped at midnight and miraculously, none of the computers crashed. The planes stayed in the air. Our bank accounts did not disappear. The new decade would bring the birth of my children, 9/11, the iPhone, social media, and Amazon.com. It also brought the inaugural issue of Neapolitan Family in September 2000 by its founder, Andrea Breznay. This December, we have a lot to celebrate before we hit 2020. We are celebrating 20 years of producing an award-winning parenting resource that helps thousands of parents each month find the information they need to pick the best schools, camps, doctors, vacations, parks, and plans for the days that can seem so long. And, in this issue, we are going to help you find the best and most affordable ways to celebrate the season with your friends and family. Middle School Artist, Writer From Estero Publishes First Book

alin Isme, a sixth grader at Three Oaks Middle School in Estero, recently published his first book, which can be found in Lee County libraries and at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. Eleven-year-old Nalin is a self-taught artist, and has become known in Estero as “Nalintheartist”. His interest in writing started in kindergarten. Inspired by programs at Pinewoods Elementary such as the yearly author’s parade and brain booster summer packet, Nalin started writing stories. Lipman and Charles Rubin, whose fathers are doctors at FCS. “In this office we give treatments and medical care and emotional support to patients and their loved ones who are struggling with a health challenge,” said Dr. Andrew Lipman. “We use our medicines and our touch and our words to help heal. Today, we will explore another avenue to healing.” The students “are led by their teacher Si-Cheng Liu, (who) in between measures and clefs, has made time to teach them about civic responsibility and volunteerism and being kind,” said Lipman. “That’s their only goal today. They are skipping their own studies to come to a medical office that most people don’t want to come to.” The student musicians plan to expand the program to more local organizations. CSN Orchestra Brings Healing Music to Cancer Patients

tudents in the Community School of Naples’ (CSN) Upper School Chamber Orchestra have taken to heart recent studies on the role music plays in augmenting mental and physical healing. Twenty musicians and their music teacher recently brought their violins, violas, cellos, and music stands to the downtown Naples offices of Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) to bring restorative music to patients and their families, as well as the staff. ZooCon Brings Students Up Close to Animals

ere in Collier County, we are fortunate to have an Arated school district. Several factors go into our success, including working together with outside partners. One such collaboration is our Collier County Public Schools’ (CCPS) ZooCon events in which we partner with the Naples Zoo. What is ZooCon? ZooCon promotes collaboration between students and local and international zoological experts sharing global issues. It’s a fully interactive experience enabling thousands of students to participate by using video conference technology. Take our Black Bear ZooCon, for example. All CCPS firstgrade students participate in this ZooCon. Select classes are given the opportunity to be at the Naples Zoo live and in-person, while all remaining first graders view the event on screens in their schools. During the ZooCon, students observe the black bears and talk with an animal expert. The expert shares information such as how we know the bears on exhibit are adults and how they look and behave differently as cubs. They also discuss some of the challenges faced when sharing our world with bears. Students are able to ask questions of the experts along the way – a highly sought-after role! The information provided to students aligns with the classroom curriculum and is delivered in such a way that makes it memorable to our learners. Following the event, zoo career options are explored – an added benefit that motivates our students to think about their future plans. Other ZooCon topics include alligator (kindergarten), giraffe (second grade), fosa (fourth grade), panther (fifth grade), and python (high school). Third-grade students participate in Classification ZooCon. Zoo experts explain characteristics of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds while showcasing animals for the student audience to meet. Featured animals vary each year and

have included penguins and lions. Always fun is the fourth-grade Fosa ZooCon, which took place this fall. It offers our student learners the chance to meet National Geographic Emerging Explorer Dr. Luke Dollar – a celebrity in the eyes of our students who see him in their science textbooks. According to Veronica Mamone, coordinator of elementary science and environmental studies at CCPS, “ZooCon allows students the opportunity to link their science learning to the real world. It has allowed us an environment to engage students in what we hope will motivate them toward future careers in STEAM as well as better understand their current global responsibility for the environment and animal conservation.” Several ZooCon events are set to take place through April.

5 Tips for Managing Sibling Rivalry

s parents, we believe that the best gift we can give our child is a lifelong friend. We picture them playing together, being silly, and supporting each other through everything from sports to break-ups. Unfortunately, we often are unprepared and floored by the inevitable conflict and jealousy that can arise between siblings. As a child psychologist and mother of two, I’ve developed a set of creative guiding principals from my personal experience and training, and from what the parents I’ve worked with have taught me. Foster interdependence. Help your children learn to intuitively rely on each other for support by giving them tasks that they cannot accomplish alone. Cleverly arranging chores to encourage your kids to work together can have a lasting impact. For example, “you both get to eat ice cream (reward) after dinner as soon as the table has been cleared and the dishes have been washed (chores). Johnny is responsible for the dishes and Janie is responsible for clearing the table.” Neither can acquire the reward without cooperation. While this may spark some momentary conflict, your children soon will develop their own system of support. Duke it out. Speaking of momentary conflict, should we interfere? The short answer is yes, and no. The biggest benefit of having a sibling is the opportunity to test boundaries, practice assertiveness, and learn conflict resolution in a low-stakes situation. As parents, we can support this growth by allowing our children to engage each other and only stepping in if absolutely necessary. This, of course, is a subjective boundary for every family. Generally, physical aggression is considered a red line of intervention, for example. Quality over quantity. How much time siblings should spend together is a common question. Well, too much of anything can be a bad thing. Focus instead on the quality of these interactions, as experiencing moments of both enjoyment and conflict will help maintain balance in your children’s relationships with each other. Similarly, spending one-on-one time with your children helps support their self-worth and reduces the frequency and intensity of jealousy and the all-too-common refrain, “well, you love Janie

way more than me!” Respect individuality. Shh, don’t tell anyone – maybe it’s not that you love Janie more, but rather that you relate more often to Janie than to Johnny. Kids are very perceptive; they see right through us. You love them both fiercely and equally, but they are so different from one another. Doing our very best to not compare our children can significantly improve our relationship with them and their relationship to each other. When you approach interactions with an openness to the fact that each child has a unique perspective, understanding comes a little easier. Be like Elsa: Let it go! Children learn through observation. Even though they will do their very best to make sure you think that they don’t see or hear you, they are watching your every move. Picking battles can be hard when raising children since everything seems important. However, sometimes the most important skill we can teach our children is how to determine what is worth a confrontation and what is better left alone. A parent once told me, “I ask my 13-year-old all the time ‘do you want to be right or do you want to enjoy your day?’ Because you can’t always have both.” This is a critical life skill with which many adults struggle.

hen Yerania “Yadi” Lopez was a little girl living in Oaxaca, Mexico, her mother left her with her aunt while she went to the United States to prepare for a better life. Her mother worked every day, in packing houses during the week and picking tomatoes and oranges on the weekends. When her mother had saved enough money, she brought Yadi and her siblings to join her and the man who would become their stepfather in the small, close-knit farming community of Immokalee. As the oldest child, Yadi had the responsibility of caring for her siblings while her parents worked. While they played and watched cartoons, Yadi discovered a love of drawing, and dreamed of a career in animation at Disney one day.

That career path would change as a she took on a part-time job in high school doing office work and patient translating at a Healthcare Network clinic in Immokalee. She realized that the work she was doing was meaningful and it sparked her interest in nursing. She went to Lorenzo Walker Technical College to become a licensed practical nurse and then continued on to Edison State College (now Florida SouthWestern State College) to become a registered nurse. This path led her back Immokalee to serve the community she grew up in as the director of operations at the same Healthcare Network clinic that she worked in before, and was a patient at when she was a child. Yadi never made it to Disney World, but she is happy to be living in Naples and working in the community where she grew up. She lives with her husband Nicolas Hernandez, a project manager for Coast Fire Protection; her daughter Bianca, 12, who attends Corkscrew Middle School; and son Enrique, 9, who attends Corkscrew Elementary School. Yadi’s stepfather died a few years ago and her mother now lives with them. How old were you when you moved to Immokalee, and what was it like? I was 11 years old. When I came to the United States it was very hard for me as it was totally different from my country; customs were different, people spoke a different language. When my mom enrolled me in school, I hated it. I didn’t have any friends as I didn’t know how to communicate and I was super shy. One day I attempted to run away because I didn’t want to be here. I cried every night because I missed my old school and my friends. What surprised you about your new country? What surprised me the most was that the school (Pinecrest Elementary) provided breakfast and lunch; we didn’t have that in my country. My favorite meal at school was a cheeseburger. It was the most delicious meal I ever had. I also loved that we had more than just one television channel. Yadi describes the migrant community as friendly and welcoming but it is also one has an undercurrent of fear. While her clinic does not question the immigration status of their patients, there is a social network that warns the community when immigration officials may be coming. When that happens the Main Street of Immokalee suddenly becomes like a ghost town and the children stay home from school. Regardless of their citizenship status, no one wants to be confronted. What are the challenges caring for the migrant population? The language barrier and [the different] cultures. Many speak Spanish or Creole. The Guatemalan community speaks Spanish with their own dialect, which can be difficult to translate. The language barrier also makes it difficult for the patients to NEAPOLITANfamily • December 2019

navigate the insurance system, so we help them with that. For the migrant population who have chronic conditions, we continue to have the challenge to make sure they continue their care when they travel to others states. Currently, we are experiencing an increase in the elderly migrant population who are now retired and have many healthcare needs. Immokalee doesn’t have assisted living facilities or nursing homes for those retirees who need medical care assistance, especially with managing medication regimens. Some them live by themselves. They don’t have the financial resources to afford a nursing home or assisted living. What do you love about your community and your work? Immokalee is an amazing community. The people are nice and very humble. They appreciate any help they receive. I also love that I am able to relate to them. I understand that child who recently has arrived from another country and I know what fears and challenges are faced during the process of adapting to a new culture. What is a typical day like for you? I make sure my children get ready for school, and that my son makes it safe to school as he takes his bike. I drop my daughter at school. When I get to my job, I do rounds. I answer emails, attend meetings as needed. I monitor and resolve any issues related with personnel, patient care, patient complaints, etc. In the afternoon I call my kids to make sure they have arrived home safely and remind them to do their homework. After work I go to the gym to do Crossfit or Zumba. When I get home I cook for the family and after that if my kids need help with their homework, I assist them.

hristmas is celebrated all around the world. The religious significance of the holiday is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, while the secular festivities involve a gift-giving character who brings presents and treats to good children. Holiday customs include decorations, music, and specialty foods. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting ways Christmas is celebrated all around the world. In India, Christmas is celebrated on December 25 with church services for believers. A midnight service is very popular. People of all faiths decorate their homes and gardens with starshaped paper lanterns and some set up nativity scenes. Father Christmas brings presents to children from a horse and cart. Special Christmas cakes and sweets such as newries (see recipe, facing page) and kulkuls are baked and open houses abound. In Sweden, St. Lucia’s day is celebrated on December 13. St. Lucia was a Christian martyr from 304 AD known for secretly taking food to persecuted Christians in the catacombs of Rome. Today young girls dress in white dresses with a red sash, and wear a crown of lights to help Lucia find her way. Special buns called lussekatts (see recipe, facing page) are served. Then on Christmas Eve a huge buffet known as julbord is eaten in courses. It begins with cold fish dishes and moves to cold meats, warm meat dishes, and desserts. Glogg, a sweet mulled wine, and coffee are favorite drinks. Homes are decorated with straw to remind everyone that Jesus was born in a manger. Gifts are brought by small gnomes called jultomten. In Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa, it is very warm at Christmas time. Still, decorations include holly and “snow” though neither exist there. Santa is known as Dadabe

Noely and only small gifts are exchanged. On Christmas day people everywhere, even strangers, greet one another with “Arahaba tratry ny Noely” which means Merry Christmas, and then go to their families to eat dinners of chicken or pork with rice and a special cake. Another favorite Christmas food is the lychee, a fruit which is peeled and eaten with great enjoyment. In Hong Kong, Christians celebrate Christmas with homemade cards bearing original artwork. The scenes show the Holy family in Chinese settings. Poinsettias and Nativity scenes are used for decorations. The Chinese alphabet is put on streamers and paper chains hang everywhere. Santa Claus is known as Lan Khong or Dun Che Lao Ren. In Zimbabwe, Christmas day is known as Kisimusi and begins with a church service. Then people spend the day visiting all of their friends and family, eating, and exchanging gifts. Favorite meals are chicken with rice which is a special treat. Often music is played loudly from large speakers in the streets. People wear their best clothes and homes are decorated with ivy draped around the top of the rooms. Christmas cards may have wild animals on them and small gifts are given to children on Christmas morning. In New Zealand, Christmas falls in the hot summer months. Families are often celebrating their summer holidays by camping or staying at the beach. There are parades and Christmas trees. The Christmas meal is barbecued meats or seafood. Desserts such as hot fruit pudding or meringues are served. Pavlova is a favorite dessert. Presents are opened on Christmas day before the special lunch. In Ethiopia, Christmas is celebrated by the Orthodox Church. It is called Ganna and held on January 7. New Zealand Pavlova Ingredients 4 egg whites 1 ⁄8 t. cream of tartar 1 cup superfine sugar (or granulated that is made fine in food processor) 1 T. cornstarch 1 t. vanilla 1 cup sliced fruit (kiwi and/or berries) 1½ cup sweetened whipped cream ¼ cup miniature chocolate chips or other small candies Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line baking pan with parchment paper. Sprinkle cream of tartar over egg whites and beat until stiff. Whisk cornstarch and sugar. Combine the two mixtures and fold in vanilla. Form mounds of meringue about 6” in diameter. Reduce heat in oven to 200 degrees and bake one hour. Turn oven off leaving meringue inside to cool. When cooled, fill each mound with whipped cream and top with fruit and candies. Swedish St. Lucia Buns (Lussekatts) Indian Newries Ingredients Dough: 4½ cups flour 3 T. butter (ghee) 1½ cups milk Filling: 1¾ cup semolina flour (coarse rice or wheat flour) 7 ⁄8 cup sugar ¼ cup raisins ¼ cup chopped cashews 3 cardamon pods 1 t. cinnamon 1 T. butter (ghee) Combine flour, butter, and milk into a stiff dough. Refrigerate. Gently cook raisins and nuts in a small amount of butter and set aside. Use rest of butter to gently fry semolina until light brown. Add sugar, spices, raisins, and nuts. Mix. Roll out small pieces of dough into 2-inch rounds. Place a tablespoon of filling in the middle, and then fold and seal the edges of the dough. Heat oil and fry until golden brown. shamma. This thin white cotton toga-like outfit is worn to a special service held in the circle-shaped church. Candles are held in a procession and communion is taken. At the time of Ganna men and boys play a game similar to hockey also known as ganna. Special foods eaten at this time of year are meat and vegetables called wat and flatbread known as injera. Children usually receive gifts of clothing. In Wales, carol singing is the highlight of the festivities. Carolers sing at dawn of Christmas morning and are invited in for snacks. Taffy-making is also a favorite family activity. There is a prize for the best new Christmas carol written that year and it is added to the list of carols sung in future Christmas celebrations. Ingredients 1 cup milk ¼ t. saffron ½ cup butter 4½ cups flour 1 T. yeast granules ½ cup potato flour or flakes 1½ t. salt 1 ⁄3 cup sugar 3 large eggs (one separated) 1 t. vanilla Glaze: 1 egg white + 1 T. water Pearl sugar Sultana raisins (golden) In a saucepan heat the milk and saffron. Remove from heat and add butter. Cool to lukewarm. In a bowl whisk yeast, flours, salt, and sugar. Separate one egg and save the white. Pour milk over the dry ingredients and add two eggs plus the extra yolk. Mix well and knead until smooth. Allow to rise one hour. Deflate and cut into 12 pieces. Form dough into S shapes and let rise another 30 minutes. Apply glaze and bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes. In Russia, Christmas is celebrated by the Orthodox Church. Once banned by the communist regime, Christmas is again celebrated with special church services as well as meat and cabbage pies called pirogi and meat dumplings known as pelmeni. A porridge, kutya, is served along with honey and poppy seeds to bring happiness, success, and peace. Children carry a star and go house to house in the cold winter snows singing carols and receiving sweets. Children love to hear about the ways other children celebrate.
