THIS MONTH: Birthdays!

Birthday celebrations are a big part of childhood memories. Whether your family enjoys big parties or smaller gatherings to celebrate the day, planning a stress-free and memorable experience can be, well, stressful. So in July, Neapolitan Family is excited to invite you to enter to win one of six amazing and FREE birthday parties! There are a variety of parties offered, so there is one that your kids are sure to love. All you have to do is enter for the parties you want, once a day, every day in July. If you prefer to host a creative party at home, Christina Katz brings you 17 “messy” ideas that will delight your guests. If you don’t have a birthday party coming up but want to crash someone else’s, head up to Bradenton to help Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee, celebrate his 69th birthday. Now that we have hit the halfway point of summer vacation, you may be hearing some complaints of boredom around the house. July is a great time to get out and explore Southwest Florida, without the seasonal traffic. On page 20, former resident Leigh Tahirovic gives us 10 reasons to cross the Jolley Bridge to Marco Island, the best of which may be to enjoy their fantastic Fourth of July festivities and fireworks show. For other July 4th events, be sure to head to our calendar on page 28, as well as lots of other family-friendly happenings throughout the month. On page 40, Anna Snyder gives us great tips on entertaining the toddler set. If your idea of a good time is dinner out with the kids, Lyn Hunter fills us in on how to raise darling diners. And if you think your darling diner should be on the cover of Neapolitan Family, check out the details of our Cover Kids Contest on page 3. Happy Independence Day!

MOVIE REVIEWS

By Parent Previews

Family Movie Reviews from New movies for kids and teens in July include Spider-Man and The Emoji Movie. Here’s a sneak peek at all the new movies for kids and teens this month. Note that release dates are subject to change. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are brought to the City of a Thousand Planets after an unknown villain threatens the peace that has been achieved here. Charged with saving the galaxy, this mission is full of battle sequences, sexual moments, and some strong language.

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for sci-fi action violence, some language, and brief suggestive comments. In Theaters July 7

WISH UPON MPAA Rating: PG-13 for violent and disturbing images, thematic elements, and language In Theaters July 14 A mysterious box grants a teen girl (Joey King) several wishes. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that none of these requests come without great costs. This horror story is certain to be creepy with its grotesque images and frightening consequences for greed and vengeance.

THE EMOJI MOVIE MPAA Rating: PG for rude humor In Theaters July 28

Photo © Columbia Pictures/Marvel Studios

This famous Marvel Comics character has been played by several actors, but in this film Tom Holland stars as the young Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man). He was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War (2016), and now gets his own name on the marquee. In this script, he is a teen in need of some mentoring to master his superhero powers. That tutelage will come with plenty of violent action, like that found in other PG-13 rated Avenger movies from this franchise.

This animation goes inside the world of smart phones where emojis live. One of these icons is Gene (voice of TJ Miller), who is unhappy that he is allowed to represent only one emotion. Expect some crude humor and silly antics in this journey of self-expression. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS MPAA Rating: PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action, suggestive material, and brief language In Theaters July 21 Whether or not they are familiar with the graphic novel, this sci-fi adventure is sure to capture teens’ attention as special operatives

MPAA Rating: PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, thematic elements, and some disturbing images. In Theaters July 14 In this third outing of the re-booted Planet of the Apes franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his band of primates battle against a human army led by the Colonel (Woody Harrelson) in a genocidal war. Features frequent violent altercations and weapons use.

here are more ways than ever to keep in touch with your child’s school. Of course, the district website and school websites will always have important information, especially during the summer months, but there are other ways to connect. Another great resource for finding activities in the community for your children, both online and in print, is the CCPS Activities Guide, published three times a year by Neapolitan Family Magazine. The guide is distributed to all Collier County Public School students. If you are offering an afterschool activity this fall for school-aged kids, you can list the details for FREE in the CCPS 2017 Fall Activities Guide. Visit www.neafamily.com for details. For advertising opportunities, contact Stacy Nicolau at snicolau@neafamily.com or 239-370-5333. 10

vidual Facebook and Twitter pages. These pages open the window to your child’s school, giving an inside look at the phenomenal learning experiences occurring every day. Many schools will also share videos of events, sometimes even using Facebook Live to stream events. For a broader view of the district, be sure to follow @collierschools on both Facebook and Twitter. The district’s page is your one-stop shop for a collection of school successes and important announcements. You can find a list of schools with their social media URLs on www.collierschools.com/communications by clicking social media on the left-hand side of the page. If you find yourself constantly on the go, CCPS has a great app (for both Android and iPhone) that offers many important features. A major feature of the app is the push notifications. You can choose to receive updates from the district and your school. This means when something important is happening at your school, you’ll receive an alert on your phone, just like when you receive a text message. You can also check grades, lunch menus, scholarship information, bus routes, and so much more. Find this app by searching Collier County Public Schools in your app store and be sure to follow your child’s school in the settings. CCPS News With so many awesome things happening in the district, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. That’s where CCPS News steps in. This two-minute news program gives you a rundown of what’s new and noteworthy in the district. From important parent information to upcoming events and school achievements and accolades, this is the news you need to know. Episodes are released bi-weekly to the district and school websites, district social media pages, and school Facebook pages. Finally, this isn’t just a way to connect with the district but the community at large. CCPS offers a Virtual Flyers program where approved outside agencies can submit their camp, activity, or program information to the district. These opportunities are then posted to the Virtual Flyers page for parents to view and see what’s out there. When submitting, community members can choose what age group and schools the event pertains to, making it easy for parents to search by their school. There’s even an option to search by summer flyers, which is perfect for this time of year. Flyers are updated every month, so there’s always something new to check out. Visit www.collierschools.com/virtualflyers or press the blue Virtual Flyers backpack which can be found on the district’s homepage (www.collierschools.com) or your school’s homepage. Remember, schools will begin posting important information to their homepages, such as dress code, school supply lists, as well as back-to-school and meet-the-teacher events. Be sure to keep checking in for more information. Continue to enjoy your summer! NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

COLLIER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Deputies Ticketing Kids For Doing the Right Thing

f a Collier deputy catches your children in the act this summer, they might just get a “ticket.” The Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is again participating in 7-Eleven’s Operation Chill, a program that aims to reduce crime and build rapport between kids and law enforcement. If a deputy spots a child wearing a helmet, picking up trash, or observing crosswalk rules, he or she could get a “ticket” for a free small Slurpee at 7-Eleven. Hundreds of agencies around the country have participated in the program since it began in 1995. Youth Relations Bureau Captain Beth Jones said Operation Chill is a great way to develop relationships with the youth in the community, while teaching the importance of making good decisions, being kind, and doing the right thing. The program goes hand-in-hand with another initiative the sheriff’s office promotes year round. Students are recognized during award ceremonies for the good deeds they do either in school or in the community as part of the Do The Right Thing program. While it is usually teachers who nominate students, anyone in the community can do so. Do you know a child who has “done the right thing” and deserves special recognition? We would love to hear from you. Forms are available to fill out online to submit to the CCSO.

Visit www.colliersheriff.org/we-can-help/parent-resources/dothe-right-thing. The award ceremonies are held six times a year at the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology, 3702 Estey Ave., Naples, in the school cafeteria at 3:30 p.m. Dates are updated throughout the summer for 2017-18 school year on www. colliersheriff.org. In the past, winners have been recognized for standing up to bullies, giving found valuables to adults, donating birthday money to a nonprofit, and alerting adults to bad behavior by fellow students. We’ve even seen students rescuing other students from dangerous situations and calling 911 when their teacher needed medical attention. During the ceremonies, a CCSO representative explains the award for each student and hands out certificates and medals. Students from elementary school through high school are eligible for nomination. So tell your kids to be on their best behavior this summer. Our deputies will be patrolling parks, community events, and camps looking to hand out free treats courtesy of 7-Eleven. And you could find yourself being recognized at an upcoming Do The Right Thing Ceremony. Thanks for helping to keep Collier County a great place and a safe place!

DLC’s Children’s Programs Receive Grants to Expand

T

he David Lawrence Center (DLC) recently received a $12,400 grant from The League Club, Inc. to expand the art therapy program in the Children’s Crisis Stabilization Unit (CCSU) and a $150,000 grant from the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation for its Children’s Inpatient Holistic Wellness Program. The Toulmin grant will be used to incorporate more comprehensive, holistic services for children residing in the eight-bed inpatient CCSU who are experiencing an acute behavioral, emotional, or psychiatric crisis. The funding will, in part, be used to employ a full-time rehabilitation specialist who will oversee the Children’s Crisis Unit Wellness Program and facilitate daily wellness groups. DLC recently doubled the capacity of the CCSU to better meet the needs of the children involved, and The League Club grant will be used to fund art therapy to the additional four children the unit can now serve. FAMILY LAW

By Dale Klaus and Reuben Doupé

Don’t Get Lost in the Paperwork

A

t the outset of any divorce or child support action, you will face the daunting task of providing your lawyer with a pile of paperwork to meet the requirement of Mandatory Disclosure. Getting all of the necessary documents together may feel like an onerous punishment, but it is a vital step in getting your case complete and getting you the relief you require. Mandatory Disclosure is a requirement placed upon both parties to a family law action by the Florida Family Law Rules of Court. Mandatory Disclosure rules apply in any family law case that includes a financial claim, i.e. equitable distribution, support, or attorney’s fees. Each party to such an action must obtain specific records, which include tax returns, bank statements, credit card statements, and pay-stubs, to name just a few; and provide copies of those documents to the other party. While the Mandatory Disclosure list may seem like unnecessary busy work, these documents are vital for your attorney to assess your case and help you get the relief to which you are entitled. This is especially true for a spouse who is not completely informed of their family’s financial circumstances. In order for your attorney to give you complete legal advice on your case, that attorney needs to know the financial circumstances of your family. Mandatory Disclosure may not give your attorney everything he or she needs to answer your questions, but it will be a great start and should help your attorney identify what other information is necessary. If one party is late or refuses to cooperate with discovery, whether Mandatory Disclosure or otherwise, then motions can be filed with the court seeking a judge’s assistance in getting compliance. Getting the court involved takes time. For example, a motion has to be filed, then a hearing has to be scheduled, and it can take as much

as four to six weeks to get in court. Getting the court involved can be costly. Your attorney has to be prepared to attend court on your behalf. Further, if you are the party not complying with the discovery rules, you may be ordered to pay sanctions, such as paying the other side’s attorney fees incurred on the motion. For these reasons, it is vital that you pay careful attention to the Mandatory Disclosure requirements. It is vital that you get all of the required documents to your lawyer and that you do so in a timely manner. Complete and timely production of documents will assist your lawyer in effectively and efficiently getting you through your action and it will help your lawyer get you the result you deserve.

BIRTHDAYS

By Christina Katz

A Festive Mess 17 Creative Birthday Activities for an Unforgettable Party

I

don’t mean to brag, but my husband and I have thrown quite a few awesome birthday parties over the years. However, when reflecting back over all the parties we’ve thrown, it’s clear to me that the most memorable parties were not the most elaborate or even the most expensive. They were simply the messiest. Messy and birthday parties go together better than you might imagine. After all, what could be more festive than a little bit of parentapproved pandemonium? The key to milking the most fun out of any birthday party is including more messy fun. And if you really want to throw the party to top all parties, go for a totally messy party from beginning to end. If a little bit of mess is memorable, than a lot of mess just might be unforgettable. In that spirit, here is a list of 17 indoor and outdoor ideas that won’t break the bank. 1. Take aim, color. Mark off a square play arena outdoors with five-foot tall Bamboo garden stakes and blue painters masking tape. Fill squirt guns or squirt bottles with non-toxic watercolor paints, don a pair of clear swim goggles, and let the kids decorate each other dressed in white t-shirts and leggings or sweats. The only rule is no one leaves the field until the paint is all spent. 2. Take a whack at it. Fill a store-bought piñata 2/3 of the way full with cooked, well-drained spaghetti. Then 18

neafamily.com

add small plastic toys, foil-wrapped granola bars, and plastic wrapped candies. To extend the fun, hang the piñata on a pull cord threaded through an eyehook so you can pull it up and down as kids swing at it with a bat or broom handle. Secure a tarp underneath with Duck tape (indoors) or camping stakes (outdoors) for easy cleanup. 3. Eggcentric art. Break the tops off real eggs and pour the yolks and whites into a container to make quiche or a soufflé later. Keeping empty shells in the carton, fill each with acrylic paints of various colors. Outside or in the garage or basement, hang a large canvas against a sturdy wall or fence and let the kids take aim and fire until they make a masterpiece. Use plastic drop cloths to catch the splatters as needed. 4. Franken-beauty. Make natural facial masks out of banana, avocado or

cocoa. Sit guests around a large table in pairs to take turns applying masks to each other’s faces. Be sure to have some hand mirrors handy so everyone can see what all the squeals are about. 5. Construction junction. Supply lots of sheets, blankets, and pillows for fort construction. If you can mount a few Hula Hoops strategically around the room, they come in handy. You might also supply bandanas and bungee chords. Be sure to inspect the results for hazards. Keep food and drinks strictly separate. 6. Reach for the foam. Play messy Twister in the yard by mixing foam shaving cream and food coloring. Wear clothing that can get stained. If no one wants to worry about clothing stains, simply use white shaving cream for the same effect. 7. Pudding slide. Make about a gallon of chocolate pudding. Drop large spoonfuls of pudding onto a Slip & Slide. Have guests take a running start down a low-grade slope. To make the slide more slippery, have guests sprinkle it with water from a sprinkler can or set the hose sprayer to mist. Add more pudding or water, as needed. 8. Slime ball. Find an online recipe to make nontoxic slime and let guests prepare it. Then play a game of hide the bouncy ball in the slime. Use a blindfold and a timer to see who can find their party favors the fastest. Enjoy the groans. 9. Picasso footsie. Roll NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

out a long sheet of paper and pour puddles of acrylic paint at one end. Have each guest step in one color per foot and walk across the paper. Switch to the other side of the paper to balance out the look. Hang art on a fence or wall to dry. 10. Musical silly string. Put half the group in the middle on a plastic tarp. Encircle guests with the other half of the group. Turn on the music. Have the inside group move in one direction and the outside group move in the other direction, while spraying the inside group with silly string. When the music is turned off, switch groups. 11. Pasta fling. Cook one box of spaghetti per party guest. Get some five-gallon buckets and fill them 2/3 of the way with water. Add enough flour to thicken the water, then add spaghetti. The only rules are: use your own spaghetti, no bucketdumping, and no touching – just throwing. Put the buckets in the square play arena and get the heck out of the way. 12. Mud puddle fun. On a sturdy table at playing height, fill a small kiddie pool with dirt and just enough water to make mud. Add digging and pouring toys for an hour of industry for young guests. 13. Duck-Duck-Dump. Have kids sit in circle for a game of duck-duck-goose. But first, hand them a cup of water and

half-cup of flour to pour over each goose’s head. 14. The opposite of tiny bubbles. Make bubble mix with ten cups of regular Dawn Dish soap and five gallons of water. Let it sit overnight. Do not agitate the solution as you pour it into a small wading pool slightly larger than a Hula Hoop in diameter. Have guest don a pair of clear

goggles and stand in the middle of the pool without splashing. Let two party guests lower a Hula Hoop over the guest and then pull it straight up into a giant bubble. 15. Three-legged color run. Set up a start and finish line for a short jaunt. Tie the legs of two guests together and have them wear clear swim goggles and white play clothing. Have other guests stand on the sidelines and throw color from bags of nontoxic Holi colors (the type used for

Color Runs, available online). The winners take on the next pair of challengers until everyone has run. The most colorful pair wins. 16. Sloppy volley. Divide guests into two groups. Put a line across the center of your play arena like a tennis court. Everyone has to stay on their own team and wear swim goggles. Place a table of supplies within reach of the backcourt. On the table, supply large bowls of chilled mashed potatoes, Jello, pudding, and cooked oatmeal. Tint food with food coloring if clothing can be stained. On your mark, get set, food fight! 17. Trashion runway. For a couple of months before the party, don’t discard your reusable recyclables. Spread them out evenly in tarps with plenty of clear tape, masking tape, painter’s tape, and Duck tape. Pair guests up into design teams. Give a one-hour time limit. The assignment is to design a runway-worthy fashion for each team out of only the trash that’s been supplied. Have a runway show afterward to display the results. Like most parents, CHRISTINA KATZ’ s first instinct is not necessarily to throw the messiest party. But she’s learned that sometimes it’s fun to throw tidiness out the window for the sake of big birthday fun.

Making Messy Work For You Remember, the key to throwing an unforgettable party isn’t about choosing the trendiest theme or the hottest destination or decorating your guts out with the latest Pinspirations. The key is simply to let kids make a mess and have fun doing it. These tips will save you some sanity. 1. If you can’t go outside, consider using a wellventilated garage, shed, or basement. 2. Check out the painting supply section of your local store for inexpensive items to protect your party space. 3. Have a designated photographer who may not be NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

slimed, spaghettied, or painted. 4. If you only have one messy activity planned, save the best for last. 5. If you go with a totally messy party, go with messy food, too, buffet style or make-your-own. 6. If you don’t want kids to get stained or dirty, you can still make a mess. Just use smocks, shower caps, and bandanas to cover up. 7. The sky’s the limit when it comes to making messes. Use your imagination; then consider safety precautions, as needed. neafamily.com

Marvelous Marco

MARCO ISLAND

By Leigh Tahirovic

The Top 10 Reasons to Cross the Jolley Bridge

W

hether you are looking for a daylong outing or a weekend getaway, Marco Island offers an alluring atmosphere full of world-class resorts, gorgeous beaches, and scrumptious seafood. A short distance from the Ten Thousand Islands, the island is also your gateway to outdoor adventures and ecotours. Plus, Marco is steeped in Southwest Florida history, giving even locals an excuse to explore. Here are 10 reasons to take a trip south, across the Jolley Bridge. The Marriott The Marriott opened even before the Jolley Bridge was four lanes, and recently became the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, after a $250-million renovation that is still underway. Stay at this beachfront resort in one of its redesigned guest rooms and dine at the new restaurants, but should you want a weekend sans kids, soon you can stay in the adult-only tower with a roof-top pool and 12,000-square-feet indoor entertainment room. The renovations, which have taken more than two years, feature a redesigned and expanded main pool deck. Don’t fret, the multimillion dollar views remain the same.

Marco Museum Come learn that Marco Island was home to some of Florida’s earliest settlers, the Calusa Indians. Inside the Marco Island Historical Museum, you can see a replica of a Calusa Indian village, complete with exhibits that showcase how these natives lived in the 1500s when Spanish explorers first discovered them. A new exhibit, “What’s Old is Not Forgotten,” opened in June and features local photography works of famous landmarks, such as the famous Cape Romano Dome House and the Horr Plantation House. While visiting, look at the building’s unique architecture and outdoor mural, and use both to educate your children. The museum is free to tour and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The beaches Don’t forget your Collier County beach parking sticker before going to Marco Island, or it will cost you to park at its two major beach access points: Tigertail Beach and South Beach. The former, situated near Big Marco Pass, offers beachgoers plenty of reasons to stay for the day, including beach rentals, a children’s playground, food ven-

dors, and restrooms. Since it’s a designated wildlife area, Tigertail is home to many shorebirds and has a unique tidal lagoon. Every winter, there are wildlife birding talks on select days. South Beach allows beachgoers to access the Gulf of Mexico and is nestled between several plush, luxury resorts. Many athletic enthusiasts begin their outdoor adventures here. There are also restrooms. The parks Mackle Park has one of the nicest outdoor playgrounds in Collier County. It has a pavilion for shaded play, and the splash pad beckons those who need a cooldown after exploring the castle-style play area. Take a walk around the lake for a nice shaded stroll. Or visit Veterans Community Park where a farmers market is held every Wednesday from early November to late April. The wide-open space is where numerous community events are hosted year-round. The YMCA Fitness enthusiasts can work out in The Greater Marco Family YMCA’s stateof-the-art fitness center, but families are the NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

ones who really benefit from the facilities. Kids can compete on the Y’s swim team, learning from one of the best swim coaches in Collier County, Coach Kamal. Or snag a deal on swim lessons this July – three lessons for just $10 (restrictions apply). Summer camp is another draw to the Marco Y, featuring theme weeks and fieldtrips for campers. And kids can take cooking classes in the teaching kitchen. Best of all, members of the Greater Naples YMCA receive reciprocal benefits. The golf Add some friendly family competition with a visit to Marco Golf and Garden, where you can enjoy a round of miniature golf. A garden, complete with native plants and trees, is the backdrop to this fun course where even “pro” golfers will find entertainment. Or see if you can play at the Island Country Club, where invited guests can play 18 holes on this championship course originally designed by pro golfer Gene Sarazen in 1966. It was reconfigured in 1991 with new bunkers and water features. The food Get a glimpse of Marco’s beautiful inland waterways while eating at the Snook Inn. It’s known for its outdoor dining and live music, but the food is why locals call it a place-not-to-miss. The fried shrimp basket is a crowd-pleaser, and since every meal comes with trip to the salad bar, even kids will get a vegetable. If you’re in the mood for Italian, try Joey’s Pizza. Whether you choose the Sicilian or the regular crust pizza, your kids will love every bite, and their prices won’t take a bite out of your wallet, especially when you eat their lunch specials. At breakfast, you

from Marco’s early pioneer period. Or test your wits at Xtreme Escape Games, where you and seven others will be trapped in a room, left to solve the puzzle to get out. Parents, it is recommended that no one under 14 take part in the game.

Cape Romano Dome House

can visit Doreen’s Cup of Joe (next door to Joey’s) where the omelets are mouthwatering. Another favorite (from the lunch menu) is the Oven Roasted Turkey Breast with Brie Cheese croissant. The entertainment If your island adventure is plagued by rain or cold temperatures, head indoors to the Marco Movies. Showtimes are very regular at (close to) 3-, 6- and 9-o’clock hour with matinees on weekends for select shows. Every seat offers optimal viewing and has a place to enjoy the full menu. Or choose one of the two playhouses: the Island Theater Company and The Marco Players Theater. The community playhouses put on several productions a year, and the Island Theater Company produces a children’s show in the summer. Adult adventures It doesn’t need to be October to get a fright on Marco Island. Take a historical ghost tour with Marco Murder and Mayhem, where tour-goers begin their adventure at Marco’s oldest building, the Olde Marco Inn, which is haunted by ghosts

The events Marco Island is possibly best known for its holiday events and parades. Every year, the Fourth of July festivities and fireworks show attracts about 12,000 people. The daylong event has contests, live music, and food vendors making it a fun-filled day on Marco’s beautiful beaches. The island’s parades – St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas – are lively and navigate through most of the island’s major roadways, where paradegoers can watch the floats pass by. But the Marco Island Seafood and Music Festival, held in March, is the island’s largest event of the year. The three-day festival overtakes Veterans Community Park and features some 60 food vendors and has a dedicated kids zone. Buy a VIP ticket which comes with a lobster meal! And every December, visitors can celebrate the season at Christmas Island Style events throughout the month. One popular attraction is the Christmas light house decorating contest, where many of the island’s homes and businesses are decked out in holiday regalia. Or watch Santa Claus arrive by helicopter as a kick-off. LEIGH TAHIROVIC is a wife and mother who loves traveling and Civil War History. She moved to Naples in 2001 and began a career in journalism. ASK THE OUTNUMBERED MOTHER

By Amy Hunter

Advice on Bored Kids and Birthday Party Etiquette Amy Hunter grew up in the suburbs of Long Island singing Barbara Streisand hits into her hairbrush. When she’s not writing her hilarityfueled parenting memoir as The Outnumbered Mother, she’s a Naples-living, butt-wiping, soccer-team carting, gourmet-chef attempting, tennis-skirt wearing, non-tennis playing, self-proclaimed bad mamma jamma to three sons and a very understanding husband. You can find Amy online at the Theoutnumberedmother.com.

all else fails, you can throw them outside with a hose and a couple of buckets. That worked like magic for my brother and me when we were kids.

Q: Now that school is out my kids are perpetually saying they’re bored. How do I combat summer boredom and stay sane at the same time?

Amy: This is one of those long debated questions among parents, and I believe the answer is situational depending on two different factors: the age of the child and the location of the party. If you have your child’s party outside of your home, at a site that is rented hourly, I don’t think you should have your child open gifts at the party. Opening gifts takes up too much time, and you want the birthday kid and their guests to enjoy themselves at the location you’ve chosen for that particular activity. Now, if you’re throwing the party at your home, opening gifts is perfectly acceptable because you control how long the party continues from the get-go. On the other hand, if the birthday child is under the age of five, opening gifts in front of guests is probably a poor choice. Not only are children that age quickly bored, but their little friends don’t usually understand the concept of personal property, and they’ll want to open and play with all the new toys. This never ends well because of broken and missing pieces. I know many gift givers want to see the expression of the recipient when opening their gifts, but kids under five are completely unpredictable, which sometimes hurts the feelings of the giver. Hope this clears up your disagreement. Party on.

Amy: Ugh, the annual, “I’m bored” summer war cry is a typical thing in our house. Besides the fact that my kids are scheduled to the gums throughout the school year, so they aren’t used to downtime, I believe this is a universal feeling during summer. The thing about being bored is that beating boredom is a crucial life skill that needs to be developed. If kids don’t experience boredom and find a way to conquer it, they become teens and adults that suffer from long-term boredom, where nothing is ever exciting. The tricky part as a parent dealing with boredom is that you either attempt to set up many activities for your children, bringing them right back to the overscheduled, no downtime situation they were in throughout the year or we are tempted to become their entertainment, which doesn’t help them figure out a way to find something interesting on their own. In my opinion, the best avenue is to have many suggestions and alternative toys and games on hand so they can make their own choices based on what interests them. Some suggestions are Legos, dolls, board games, books, and arts and crafts. When

VOLUNTEERING By Leigh Ann Newman

Volunteers Needed at Buddy Break

M

y volunteering efforts over the years have tended to focus on activities in which my daughter was involved: I was her soccer and volleyball coach, and her Girl Scout leader. I realized recently that it was time to shift that focus to outside our family. While we were putting together Neapolitan Family’s annual list of local nonprofit organizations, one group in particular caught my attention. Since January, I’ve volunteered once a month at Nathaniel’s Hope Buddy Break. Buddy Break Naples is a threehour session of free child care for kids with special needs. “Typical” siblings also are welcome, so parents can have a few kid-free hours to enjoy date night, run errands, or simply relax. Once a month, volunteers (buddies), VIPs (the children with special needs), and typicals (siblings) gather at the Naples Seventh Day Adventist Church. Buddies show up 30 minutes before the VIPs to have time to grab a slice of pizza, read their VIPs file, and chat with other buddies. I’ve been paired with a different child each month. The organizer matches the VIPs with the buddies—all VIPs have a buddy, so the number of children who can attend every month depends on the number of volunteers, which varies. The matching process takes into consideration the needs and abilities of both buddy and the VIPs. My first night, I was paired with a boy who is a Buddy Break veteran and didn’t require much assistance, which provided a gentle introduction to the evenings. Like parenting, my Buddy Break nights have included a little of everything: running from room to room for three hours straight, turning back on the DVD player and lights that my buddy enjoyed switching off; stretching out on my back on the sidewalk outside and learning new things about our galaxy; assisting in the bathroom or changing a diaper; spending two hours building and playing with a marble maze; helping with craft projects; keeping little hands out of the snacks; petting the therapy dogs; running races outside; and, of course, putting shoes back on. The nights swing from chaotic to boring (two hours is a really long time to play with a marble maze) to fun to relaxing to rewarding and back again. Some months, Buddy Break turns away VIPs because of a lack of buddies, especially in the summer. This is the ideal volunteer opportunity for anyone, from students to retirees, no matter how busy you are. Volunteers are asked a few weeks ahead of each event if they will attend. There is no requirement to attend every session. Like with most volunteer posts, there are a few forms to fill out, a background check, and training session, but once those are taken care of, you are ready to volunteer. One of the major benefits for me is that my daughter (who is NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

12 years old) and I can volunteer together (there are age restrictions for volunteers). She is either paired with me and my buddy, or helps with the typical siblings, or recently has been paired with a girl her age with Asperger’s syndrome. This girl is the reason I was flat on my back in a parking lot in East Naples, looking up at the stars and realizing, as I listened to her name every constellation in the sky, just how much I had to learn from these children.

Buddies and VIPs ham it up at June’s Buddy Break, courtesy of Naples Photo Booth.

While Buddy Break always is on the look out for more volunteers, there also is a pressing need for another group (ideally a church) to host another event each month, according to coordinator Michelle Crombie. Even with more volunteers at the Seventh Day Adventist Church location, Buddy Break is limited by space to a certain number of VIPs. More Buddy Breaks around town would provide an additional night for parents already participating and would allow more kids overall to participate. To learn about volunteering, contact Michelle Crombie at 239-272-8031 or buddybreaknaples@gmail.com.

KIDS ON THE GO

By Lyn Hunter

Taking Your Kids To Dinner Without Losing Your Mind

I

t’s only sort of a joke that I refer to my family as the Hunter Family Circus. Let’s just say that, as a group, we have no chill. If you were to see me with my four children on the sidewalk or in the aisle at the store, you would never imagine that I take them out to eat. You’d probably never imagine that I do it as often as I do, either, but my husband is a chef, which means that we are a restaurant family. Perhaps surprisingly, the kids have been in restaurants since they were a few weeks old. Over the years, I’ve developed a series of strategies and tactics for dining out that works for our family, and perhaps they’ll help you confidently brave a restaurant adventure with your children.

but also not fast food because standing in lines will be the end of your sanity. Diners and casual restaurants like BBQ joints or Mexican restaurants are great places to start. They have the capacity to seat large parties

Start early Set out the rules from toddlerhood if possible. I know that’s hard to imagine, but, in my experience, the kids rose to the behavioral bar we set for them. We expected that they would act like small humans in public eating situations, and they grew to meet those expectations like champs. Some of our Three-year-old Josie Hunter proves that there is a world beyond mac & cheese and chicken fingers standard rules are the following: • No getting up from the table without for toddlers. Speaking of servers... Make friends with your server. I always acknowledged right away that I knew

asking for a table for five with four kids’ menus, a booster, and two high chairs was a big request, and I always – even still – tip generously if I’m dining with my children. There are always going to be more trips to the table for your server whenever children are involved. Your server will be bringing you extra cutlery (it’s always falling on the floor), napkins (for dirty faces and inevitable spills), and condiments (there’s just never enough ketchup in the world). There’s also going to be extra cleanup involved whenever children eat, so the server will have to spend extra time on cleaning up the floor and turning the table for the next patron. That server will deserve all 20% of the tip, and always feel free to show your gratitude for the night off from dish duty by tipping more. Plan your strategy Advance planning is helpful, but not necessary as long as you remember the most important rule of dining out with children: order the kids’ food as soon as your server comes to take your drink orders. Other suggestions for planning in advance include checking restaurant’s website before you go for kid’s menu options, or for food your kid will eat from the adult menu if there’s no children’s menu available. Always pack your own supplies: wipes, crayons/paper, sippy cups/cups with lids, and I have been known to pack my own booster/high chair in the car in case there are none available at the restaurant. The Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat and the Regalo Easy Diner Portable Hook On High Chair are both options I’ve used. Adjust your timing In the early attempts at working out the kinks, try to visit the restaurant at off-hours times, meaning slightly earlier or slightly later than the average meal times for other NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

non-kid people. It will be less crowded, so everyone involved from the restaurant staff to your kids will be less stressed. In fact, if you can time your arrival in the half-hour or so before the kids are starving, you’ll save yourself some emotional drama – and the kids will behave better, too. Be strong There will be other people in the restaurant, and they may not be as excited about your new adventures in dining out as you and your family are. In fact, they may be downright and obviously hostile. Be strong, my friends! Resist caving in when other diners give you and your children the stink-eye for existing in the same restaurant space and time as they do. My children are impeccably behaved in restaurants 90% of the time, and we STILL get dirty looks from people who think we are crazy to take them out for dinner – or who just thought they were in some kind of “child-free” space. Those people can enjoy my smiles and suggestions that they join us and keep their opinions to themselves. As one of my girlfriends always says, “Do your best and ignore the rest.”

If you are really worried your children will misbehave in the restaurant and you missed out on the training-from-toddlerhood option, never fear – bribery is still

to the china, and remind them about the goal each time you pass the restaurant your child wants to try. Ultimately, although I’d argue that it’s most important to start trying early (like from as early as you can muster up the courage to try) the truth is that any time is a good time to try to learn new skills and new ways to be part of the world outside your family and home. None of this should suggest that we don’t have our own war stories of terrible tantrums in the middle of a meal at a busy restaurant, but, by and large, my children (now 11, 6, 5 and 5 – yes, I have TWINS) have always been well-behaved dinner companions. There’s no way, realistically, to get through every meal in a restaurant with 3 children under 5 completely unscathed, but we just kept trying, working on the assumption that they like eating out more than they like throwing angry fits. SUMMER FUN

By Anna Snyder

Summer Fun for Your Little Ones

S

chool-aged children have a wide range of activities from which to choose: summer reading to complete, dance camps to attend, organized sports in which to participate, music and art lessons to enjoy, swim teams to join – well, you get the idea! So many options exist during summer months for children over – let’s just say for argument’s sake – about five years old. So, where does that leave me (and all the other moms of littles in Southwest Florida)?! Long, hot summer days without our usual school-year activities stretch ahead of us like an endless road trip in an A/C-less station wagon with vinyl seats and a broken stereo system. What do we do with the time that we have? How do we keep from overheating? And, perhaps more importantly, how do we keep our little ones out of trouble? The play date Schedule playdates this summer so that your little ones can fight over cool toys while you sip coffee and catch up on conversation with your friends. Play dates are a great way to add structure to the week, invite others over to your home to teach your kids the importance of sharing their toys, and connect with other moms. Remember, coffee and snacks are essential to a successful play date! And moms, let’s all agree that we don’t have to clean up our homes for one another if we don’t feel like it. The impending flurry of activity from a gaggle of three year olds renders that type of preparation completely unnecessary. So, please believe me: your house isn’t too small, and it’s not too messy. You don’t need to go

out and buy anything or do anything special to have another mom and her kids over. So, does next Wednesday at 10 a.m. work for you? We’ll be there with doughnut holes! The water We live in a beautiful place. It’s hotter than hot and brighter than bright during the summer months, but beautiful nonetheless. There are lots of totally free and low-cost ways to wear little children out during the summer months. The beach, especially early in the morning when there’s shade from the high rise condominiums, is a fantastic way to watch your toddler run around and eat sand. Don’t forget the beach toys; if she doesn’t have her own (and even if she does), she’ll try to take another family’s bucket and shovel. Also, to get sand off of the hard-to-reach areas of your toddler’s body, dry her off, and sprinkle on some baby powder. The sand wipes right off. There are some splash pads in our area, too, that provide a way for children to interact with one another and keep cool. Some of these are true splash pads, and others are more like two-foot-deep kiddie pools with water features. This list is by no means comprehensive. If you know of any others, let us know on the Neapolitan Family Facebook page. • Vineyards Community Park • Fleischmann Park • River Park Aquatic Center • Naples Botanical Garden • Golden Gate Community Park • Sun-N-Fun Lagoon A couple of cheap kiddie pools and a sprinkler attachment for the hose also can create a backyard paradise for young children. Invite a few other families over for a play date to beat the heat and create an opportunity for kids to track mud through your house while looking for a bathroom. NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2017

The calendar In your next free moment (because we all have SO many!), make sure you check out the Neapolitan Family calendar. It is my go-to resource for structured activities in the community for little ones. Go to page 24 for the pull-out monthly calendar and page 26 for the full print calendar. Don’t forget to visit www.neafamily. com, as there are events on the website that don’t make it into print because of space limitations. You might be surprised at the number of events in our community for families with young children. The Collier County Library system, along with the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples (C’mon), the Greater Naples YMCA, and Collier County Parks and Recreation, all have programs specifically for children ages 18 months to 5 years old (and older, of course). What are other parents doing? From the beautiful photos I see on social media, it seems like all the other moms of toddlers have life figured out. (Ha!) In reality, though, how do stay-at-home parents provide structure and meaningful activities for their children? Here are some ideas. • “I take my children swimming whenever possible. It’s exercise, it keeps them cool, and it wears them out so they sleep well.” Jenna, mom of three (ages 7,5, & 3) • “My favorite is naptime. I love naptime.” Allison, mom of two (ages 3 & 8 months) • “My kids love to go to the library. We also go to story time at Barnes & Noble, and we go to the Naples Botanical Gardens as much as possible.” Ann, mom of two (ages 7 & 3) • “If there’s no thunder or lightning, we all go outside and

play in the rain! We cool off, and it’s an activity that takes no prep work, no money, and the kids sleep hard afterwards.” Sally, mom of three (ages 3, 2 & 6 months) • “TV & naps! In all seriousness, we go to the Chick-fil-A playground, fenced-in outdoor playgrounds, or the children’s museum – anything to keep their minds and bodies busy. Otherwise they destroy the house!” Ashley, mom of five (ages 10, 8, 5, 3 & 3) • “We go in the backyard to our dirt pile with diggers and dump trucks. I hang a hose over the tree to drip into a baby pool. These two activities give my kids hours of fun and entertainment so I can enjoy a nice, cold drink.” Katie, mom of three (ages 7, 2 & 2) • “Our family likes to attend outdoor concerts together.” Christine, mom of two (ages 4 & 2) • “When my kids were little, we made forts out of blankets and cushions, and we rolled up socks to have snow ball fights. We used to take walks, ride bikes, visit parks, and go to any pool possible (as well as the beach). I also signed my kids up for several Vacation Bible Schools at area churches.” Sharon, mom of four (now grown) children To connect with other Southwest Florida moms, visit Facebook – there are many groups with thousands of members. I see posts all the time about moms looking to schedule activities with other moms. There is a lot more going on during the summer than you might think. So, to all my fellow parents in Naples with young children, enjoy your family, and have a great summer! ANNA SNYDER has a degree in English and Secondary Education. uly is a big birthday month in my world, and if you think we women are a teensy bit sensitive about revealing our ages, you haven’t met my two guys. The younger one’s discovery of his first gray hair sent him flying to the “Just for Men” counter at the drug store. And the older one treated me to the evil eye for a week for putting a certain (true) number on his birthday cake. This year he may or may not get a cake. Which is why I’m so excited about Snooty the Manatee’s 69th Birthday Bash & Wildlife Festival in Bradenton on Saturday, July 22. As far as marine scientists can tell, Snooty’s the oldest manatee in the world. It’s no wonder that he has far outlived a manatee’s average 50-year lifespan: he’s one seriously pampered trichechus

manatus. He gets only the best organic grasses, fruits and vegetables, impeccable health care, and tons of love from his fans all over the world. Snooty’s all-day outdoor birthday party will feature live music, free cookies, food trucks, games, activities, and awesome naturalist exhibits. Mote Marine’s shark tooth dig pit, touch tank, and other displays will be there, as well as Save the Manatee Club, Florida Forest Service, and State Park rangers. The first-ever Snooty mascot will make his debut for photo ops at the festival. At noon, everyone will head over to the viewing window in the Spanish Plaza to sing as the birthday boy noses into his yummy raw birthday cake made of beets, kale, strawberries, and his other faves.

If you and the kids can’t make it to Snooty’s party, here are six other ways to feel the love. 1. Send a birthday card. For real. Hundreds flow in from all over the world. The address is: Snooty, South Florida Museum, 201 10th St. W., Bradenton, FL 34205. 2. Visit him anytime at the South Florida Museum, where he greets guests daily during demonstrations and feedings. 3. Check him out on the snootycam at www.southfloridamuseum.org. 4. Listen to manatee chatter, chewing and, umm, outrageous flatulence sounds here: www.savethemanatee.org/audio.htm 5. Adopt a manatee of your own! A huge manatee poster, adoption certificate, and even a stuffed manatee come with your package. savethemanatee.org. 6. “Baby Snoots” was born in captivity in 1948 just a few hours before his mother died from a boat injury. He came to the South Florida Museum a year later, and has been a beloved Bradenton citizen ever since. Snooty presides over his own aquarium inside the museum, where he serves as a mentor for stressed-out and injured manatees in the rehab and release program. Right now, his little buddies are Baca, who is suffering from cold stress syndrome; Gale, an orphaned baby; and Randall, who got himself stuck in a culvert. Over six decades, Snooty has helped dozens of manatees prepare for rerelease into the wild. He’s also one smart cookie. Studying him has helped researchers determine that in many ways manatees are on the same intellectual level as dolphins. Bradenton is north of Sarasota, about two hours from Naples. The free outdoor festival hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets to the museum’s inside exhibits, including Snooty’s aquarium and the state-of-the-art Bishop Planetarium, are half price all day. ($9.50 for adults; $7 for children; free for active military personnel, teachers, and kids under 3). The museum remains open until 5 p.m. SouthFloridaMuseum.org, 941-746-4131. KAREN T. BARTLETT, travel editor of Neapolitan Family and publisher of the popular guidebooks, Mostly Kids’ Guides, has authored 11 destination travel books. The Omni Orlando Beckons Families

E

xperience a whole new world in Orlando – and skip the visit to see that little black-and-white mouse, because the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate offers enough attractions to satisfy every age: Dad can enjoy a round of golf, Mom can have a relaxing spa experience, and the kids can take a plunge down the 125-foot water slide or float along the lazy river. If grandma and grandpa come along, they can spend the day in the shade in a poolside cabana, and since the Omni is pet-friendly, your furry friend can come too. After undergoing a $40 million renovation, the Omni has added more guest rooms, another zero-entry kids’ pool, and a wave pool. The additional 93 guest rooms are designed to accommodate families in a two-, three- or four-bedroom combination. Families may opt for a villa, which has a full kitchen. (Ask about Omni’s grocery delivery service.) Florida resident rates are available, as well as other packages that include golf lessons with tee times or spa treatments, and if you do choose to visit Walt Disney World, there is a daily shuttle. My family stayed in adjoining guest rooms, overlooking the pools, in the main hotel tower. The king bed was luxurious and had more than enough pillows to go around. Ask for feather pillows for an additional comfort; the front desk was happy to honor my request. In the next room, there were two comfy queen beds, identical to the king bed. My family of five had enough space – and TVs – to keep everyone happy. Having two bathrooms made getting dressed for dinner a breeze. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Omni hosts its 102 Days of Summer Fun campaign. Guests can take part in dive-in movies, splash parties, cooking demonstrations, golf clinics, and more. On select days, the resort has a fireworks show. Other family-friendly activities include a miniature golf course, a par 3, nine-hole golf course as well as the recently renovated international golf course. (The national golf course is being renovated.) Take a golf lesson at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, even if you’ve never picked up a club before.

44

neafamily.com

I took a golf lesson and in just one hour, I was swinging my club with more precision. The coach, Michael Sanabria, showed me simple ways to grip my club. That lesson really helped when I played miniature golf with my kids, but avoid playing in the early evening when the mosquitos come out in droves. Don’t miss watching the sunset outside on the golf course, but bring bug repellent. The best way to enjoy those balmy summer days is relaxing poolside. The formal pool is an elegant escape for kid-free couples, especially if you reserve a cabana. The covered area has comfortable, cushioned chaise lounges and comes stocked with a refrigerator filled with beverages and a fruit plate. There is a TV and a ceiling fan, and Wi-Fi access. The new zero-entry pool also has cabanas, making it a comfortable – and shaded – place to relax, especially if you have a baby or toddler. The Omni sells swim diapers for $2 at the pool hut. That was a blessing for me, since I ran out. Families can take a dip in the original zero-entry family pool, where older kids can ride the 125-foot corkscrew water slide or organize a game of water basketball with new friends. Try the lazy river too, where guests can float along the 850-foot river on an inner tube while dodging the water obstacles. Beware, those can strike, waking you up from a peaceful ride. Enjoy one of the three new water slides; little kids can sit on Mom or Dad’s lap while going down the largest, middle slide. Another must-do is taking a dip in the wave pool. The Omni is the first resort in Orlando to have a wave pool. If you’re hungry, the Omni has plenty of options. At Trevi’s, guests can sample Italian fare served family style. (The meatballs are scrumptious!) It is an affordable option for large parties, but don’t miss the breakfast buffet served daily. It’s an enormous feast that is worth the splurge. Every morning of our stay, my kids couldn’t wait to pile their plates with bacon and get a specialty omelet from Ana, who will create any concoction imagined. The service was impeccable, like all of the Omni staff delivers. On the main lobby floor, you will find David’s Club, an upscale sports bar, but the only thing resembling a sports bar is the large

TV. I didn’t stay for cocktails, but our dinner at David’s Club was fabulous. Next time, I’ll send my kids to Omni Kids Escape ($12/ hour per kid) and eat a relaxing meal with my spouse. Zen is another option for an evening meal, where guests can enjoy Pan-Asian cuisine. For something different, sign up for the sushi making class, $12. It’s fun learning how to craft California rolls. I thought the class was a real treat, learning the precise amount of pressure it takes to cut a sushi roll. Even kids can get in on the fun, but those knives are very sharp. If getting out of your chaise lounge is too much effort, dine at Croc’s while sitting poolside. Waiters will deliver your morsels to you, or if liquid libations are more your speed, choose from an array of cocktails, either frozen or on the rocks.

Grab a pack of s’mores at the Broadway Deli for roasting at the fire pit.
