THIS MONTH: Birthdays!

July is the half way point of summer vacation, so by now you are either in a great routine or at your wit’s end. After the first full week of June, I lost track of what day it was. Since every day felt like Saturday, I forgot when Saturday actually was and I missed taking my daughter to her volleyball game. By the end of the first week, my kids had eaten from every fast casual restaurant and food delivery in town plus three dozen eggs, resurrected the old Wii from the attic, completed a couple of series on Netﬂix, and created at least 20 loads of laundry. (True story: You CAN use a pool towel more than once and not die.) Luckily, our travel plans started in week two, which effectively broke up the boredom with new and interesting adventures. My son and youngest daughter went to California to visit relatives while I went with my oldest daughter on a school trip to Spain. Probably the most important thing to all of us was how to find the free Wi-Fi to stay connected and to, um, alleviate the boredom during the journey. Our intern Ginny Lundstrom talked to the Center for Cyber Safety and Education to learn how to keep our data and our children safe on the internet while traveling, as well as at home (page 44). Many of you who are spending the summer here at home in Naples have planned out the summer schedule with various summer camps and team sports, but for those of you who have a few gaps will find lots of free and almost free things to do in our calendar. Be sure to check out some of the wonderful children’s theater performances this summer from KidzAct, The Broadway Palm Theatre, Centers for the Arts Bonita, and Gulfshore Playhouse, as well as the free kids movies at Paragon Theaters, sponsored by Neapolitan Family. New Bereavement Program Helps Children Grieve

aples Therapeutic Riding Center has launched a new children’s bereavement equine-facilitated learning program. Participating in the first group of sessions were five children coping with the recent loss of a parent, and who were enrolled in Avow Hospice’s bereavement support group, which helps children through their journey of grief in a unique, healing process. Children are able to identify and vocalize feelings needed for healing in an intimate, safe environment where the trust and comfort of loving horses allows them

time to process grief. “Kids don’t often express their anger or sadness about the death out loud due to fear of the response from other adults in their life,” said Alexis Hobson, children’s services coordinator at Avow. “The horse is another living, breathing being for them to experience closeness with. They provide comfort without judgment or fear of

NAA Adds Summer Yoga and Mommy & Me Music Classes

he Naples Art Association (NAA) has added summer classes aimed at siblings and parents of its ARTScool summer camp attendees. The classes will run through Aug. 2. Led by Laura-Maria Chami, Mommy & Me Music Class is offered every Monday and Wednesday, 9-10 a.m., and features original songs, instrument play, and movement to purposeful, age-appropriate activities. The Monday classes are geared toward one-month to nine-month-old babies while the Wednesday classes are for nine-month to 24-month-old children. Naples Teen Sells Advertising on Prom Dress, Donates Proceeds

ubrey Garcia, like many teenagers in Collier County, witnessed firsthand the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma and searched for ways to help those in need. Garcia’s fundraising idea was to sell blocks of advertising on her prom dress, and the 17-year-old student reached out to local businesses and organizations with her idea. “I got a lot of rejections, but heard a lot of positive feedback as well,” Garcia said. The teen ended up collecting $1,550 through eight sponsorships and, after careful consideration, decided to donate the money to Guadalupe Center. Guadalupe Center, which has a mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education for the children of Immokalee, selected 2018 Immokalee High School graduate Barbara St. Fleur, a senior in its college-preparatory Tutor Corps program, to receive the funds. St. Fleur’s laptop was severely damaged during the hurricane, and she’s been using a borrowed computer since last fall. St. Fleur is heading to Arcadia University in Pennsylvania on a full scholarship, and needed to find a permanent solution. When Garcia presented St. Fleur with a new laptop, it was the first time the two teens had met, but after chatting, they realized both were taking dual enrollment classes at Florida SouthWestern State College. St. Fleur, 18, was happy to see a fellow teen step forward and make the news for a positive action.

“You usually don’t hear about a dress or fashion unless a person is wearing something inappropriate, so for her to use her prom dress for a good cause is amazing,” said St. Fleur. Golden Gate High held its prom at the Hilton Naples, and Garcia wore a black skirt coupled with a white sleeveless top. The dress featured advertisements from Barron Collier Companies, the Maurizi family, Remnant Construction, S&J Renovations, Asset Management Solutions, FOX4, Goodyear, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, each printed on fabric paper, attached to a sash made by Garcia and pinned to her skirt. Only a small group of friends knew about Garcia’s dress before prom night. “Everybody is so stuck on graduation and prom, and what they want to wear,” Garcia said. “They all wondered, ‘Why are you wearing logos?’ After they found out, though, most of them thought it was a cool idea.”

Choosing the Best School

electing the best school for your child can be a difficult scenario for divorced parents. There are both practical and legal implications involved in what should be a simple decision. Depending on the family, there may be a question of public or private school, and if private school is selected, which school is best. For most intact families, this is an easy decision, but for divorced parents this decision can be full of suspicions about motive and reasons for each parent’s decision. As with all major decisions for children, school choice requires the parents to carry out shared parental responsibility. Pure shared parental responsibility requires the parents’ mutual consent for all major decisions. Conceptually, this requires the parents to discuss major decisions and engage in give-and-take until an agreement is reached. The difficulty arises when a stalemate occurs. Our firm has yet to see a case with three parents for a child, so that means a 1-1 vote is nearly always a possibility. Under shared parental responsibility there is no tie-breaker. In the context of a school choice, such a stalemate would mean the child will continue attending the same school. If the child has not yet gone to school and the parties cannot agree to a private school, then public school is going to be the result. A judge cannot make the choice for you; a judge may only select one parent over the other to make the ultimate decision.

The only way to effectively avoid these situations is to address them before they happen. At the time of divorce, try to include all possible future conflicts in a detailed parenting plan to have the answer addressed in advance. Second, even if the parents agree that a child will attend public school, the issue of which parent’s address should be used for the selection of the public school could be a cause of confusion. When Florida changed the custody laws to eliminate reference to custody and to requiring parenting plans, the statue also mandated that parenting plans must include a designation of which parent will be the school-based parent. This requires the parties to address this issue at the time of their divorce. When making this decision, consideration should be given to the geography of the parents in relation to the schools, the timing of which parent will need to drop off or pick up from school on various dates, as well as consideration of the value or grades of the

schools, history at certain schools or attendance by siblings, step-siblings, or friends of the child. In these situations, hopefully parents can ignore their personal feelings for one another and make a decision that is best for their child. The selection of a school is a very important decision for any family, one that becomes more complicated in a divorced family. However, with early planning and communication, parents should be able to agree upon the school that is in the best interests of the children. Ideally, parents should tour the schools together, ask questions, and investigate all of their options. In the end, they should work together and select a school that is right for their child and remember to put the needs of the children over the disagreements of the parents.

Celebrating Success at CCPS

e did it! We made it through another successful school year filled with learning, friendships, and fun. This year certainly brought its challenges (Hello, Irma!) but together, we pulled through to ensure that student achievement continued as our driving force. There have been countless #CCPSSuccess stories to celebrate this year. Our graduation rate climbed to 88.2% (an increase of 1.5 percentage points over last year). Our Class of 2018 graduates broke a CCPS record by earning $41,384,849 in scholarships (an increase of more than $6 million over last year). Our third graders improved their test scores by two points while the state average declined by one point and CCPS is ahead of the state average by two points. Plus, so many more #CCPSSuccess stories happened every day at every school and in every classroom. When talking about #CCPSSuccess, one of the first things to come to mind is graduation. It’s the ultimate success story for us. This year, we celebrated more than 3,000 graduates! To see our students walk across that stage headed onto their career or college pathway is always uplifting and exciting. When asked to share some advice with our younger students, almost all of our graduates said the same thing: “Don’t procrastinate.” Another word of advice: “Participate.” Getting involved in various clubs and activities helps you to find your passion and keeps you connected with your fellow students. So, to all of our current students, we hope to see you involved next school year, whether it be in sports, clubs, or music. But before the school year begins, we have summer. And while summer is full of sun and fun, it should also include learning. The summer slide can diminish what our students have absorbed during the school year. That is why we have resources available on our website to help your children continue their growth and learning during the summer months. Teach Your Child When to Dial 9-1-1

s adults, we often take for granted when and how to get in touch with emergency personnel. Educating your children about the process is tantamount to your safety and theirs. Here are a few tips for educating your children: • Tell your child to call 911 if they have an emergency; when you need a deputy for a crime, the fire department for a fire, or an ambulance if someone is hurt. • Tell your child to call 911 for a real emergency, never as a joke. • Teach your child their first and last name, parent’s names, address, and phone number. • The Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) participates in the Red E. Fox program, where the Red E. Fox mascot will visit schools and events to educate students. To request Red E. Fox for your next event, call 239-252-9380. As parents, it’s also important to keep up-to-date on the latest in 911 communications here at the CCSO. Did you know you can text 911? In the event of an emergency when you cannot speak or don’t want to speak for fear of your safety, you can text 911 anywhere in Collier County to begin messaging a dispatcher. The feature is not available everywhere, so be sure only to use this feature while in Collier County.

CCSO also has been part of two new pilot programs testing smartphone features that would more readily supply your personal information to dispatcher in the event of an emergency. The first is a feature we tested in partnership with Google that would use the map’s data features on your phone to communicate an accurate location for your emergency. This can be especially helpful in rural areas. Early tests went well and soon the feature will be a permanent one locally. Uber also is looking to improve its emergency features by allowing users to call 911 through its app. Doing so would provide your location to dispatchers as the Uber vehicle moves. While you might never need to use this feature while riding in an Uber, it can be extremely helpful in providing location information if you are in an unfamiliar place. This feature is also expected to become permanent here in Collier County. In the meantime, you can always set up a Smart 911 profile with CCSO to provide important information in the event of an emergency. To do so, visit Smart911.com. The site allows you to upload your personal location information, a photo, and any medical information first responders might need in an emergency. Doing so can save your life or the life of your child.

But as children move into the tween and teen years, party planning becomes more complicated. Here are five sure-fire party ideas that can be tailored to fit tweens and teens of either gender.

Glow-in-the-Dark Sock Hop Turn down the lights for a fantastic party theme. Use black lights to illuminate your party space for a glowing good time. Decorate the room with white streamers and neoncolored balloons, and make the party table pop with a white table cover along with neon plates and napkins. Budget Friendly Birthday Parties

hen it comes to our kids’ birthdays, the temptation is to make each year’s celebration bigger and better than the last, which usually means the cost grows along with our children. It certainly is easy to get carried away. But, fortunately, it’s easy to throw a fun and fabulous birthday party for your child without breaking the bank. Here are just a few ideas on how to get started. Plan ahead. It is possible to create lovely decorations, creative food, and exciting games for a birthday party while keeping costs low. In order to accomplish this, though, it is important to plan everything ahead of time. DIY decorations take a significant amount of effort. Give yourself several weeks to accomplish your party “to do” list. Keep an eye out for sales on party items, especially right after any major holiday. Monica Meistrell, a mom of four, said her four-year-old son wanted an unusual theme for his big day. “He started talking

about having an eyeball-themed party several months before his birthday (January 1). I was able to buy Halloween decorations at deep discounts because I started planning and preparing so far ahead of time. We also plan and prepare for parties in advance in order to spread out expenses and keep them reasonably priced.” Food. For a cost-conscious birthday party, food typically represents the highest dollar output. Consider hosting a party during a time of the day when

guests will not require a main meal. Serve snacks rather than a full meal. Snacks and treats cost less than main dishes, such as pizza, chicken, etc. Snack tables are easy and relatively inexpensive. Rather than purchasing pre-made snack platters, chop up some vegetables and serve them with ranch dressing or hummus. Buy chips in bulk from a discount warehouse such as Sam’s or Costco. “We always do finger foods and snacks instead of a full meal,” said Ashley McLean, a local Naples mom of three. “And we love Costco for this type of spread!” Another option may be to ask family members to bring food to the party. Kaitlyn Jared, a Southwest Florida mom of one, explained her family’s approach to party food. “The last two years we have done a chili bar and cupcakes for dessert. My mom usually makes a huge pot of chili, and we provide lots of toppings.” Themes and Activities. Kids often request various character-based themes

for their birthday parties (i.e. Frozen, Paw Patrol, Spiderman, etc.). This can result in over-spending on licensed products. Select plain colored table cloths, napkins, plates, and balloons, and then add in more special, theme-centered décor. For example, for a Frozen-themed party, look for balloons and other supplies with a snowflake/winter theme, and limit your expensive Elsa, Anna, and Olaf purchases. Print out specialized décor online, and create a couple of DIY decorations using a simple Google search. Birthday party activities at various venues around Southwest Florida come with a price tag. Hold your party at a local park or beach and plan some outdoor games and activities. Or, consider hosting the party at your home where you can easily control the environment and direct the activities. The internet is flush with easy ideas for crafts, party games, and activities. For example, a water-based theme party provides endless options for activities: homemade slip and slides, water balloons, sprinklers, etc. Friends. Budget-friendly birthday parties often mean smaller numbers. This

is not necessarily a bad thing. One Naples mom, Courtney Newbery, seeks input on the guest list from her children. “I let my children invite two or three friends to their birthday party, and we choose simple activities. We want our children to feel celebrated, and this helps make the event significant.” This also makes friends feel special and gives direction to the party. Deciding to limit numbers can help keep costs down. Ban the goodie bag. The goodie bag is one area where the cost that can quickly get out of hand. Most parents (and kids) would be happy to go home from a party without a bag filled with toys and more treats. Focus on what’s important at your party: fun, family, friends, and (of course) cake. Something different If you’ve decided that the traditional yearly birthday party isn’t right for your family, here are some ideas for a twist on the standard party, as well as alternative celebrations. • Plan a party for your child only every other year. This creates excitement and

makes each party special without spending too much on a regular basis, particularly if you have a bigger family. • Forgo a traditional birthday party in favor of a special activity, such as a movie on the big screen, a family adventure or weekend trip, or a night out to a special restaurant. • Consider planning a party alongside another family. If your child’s birthday aligns with another close friend’s special day, you could split costs by throwing a combined party. • While children are young, consider throwing family-only birthday parties. This can make the party more manageable financially and take the pressure off for providing entertainment, games, etc. • Head to any one of our local dollar stores for party supplies and favors. Comparison shop to save money on paper plates, décor, and other favors. The main take-away here is this: keep it simple. It is so easy to go over the top for our children’s birthday parties. But memorable celebrations don’t have to be expensive. Give yourself time, do some research, and enjoy the process.

usan Suarez has been CEO of the Naples Holocaust Museum for just over a year, but is no stranger to the local nonprofit community. As a consultant, employee, and volunteer, Suarez has been an integral part of many nonprofit organizations here in Southwest Florida. While she was building her career, she also was raising a family with husband Carl. Since her two children were little, Suarez has involved them in her professional and volunteer activities, modeling a life of service to others.

Where did you attend college? I graduated from Stanford University with a double-major in French and Economics and later received an MBA from Santa Clara University. Tell us about your career path and how it brought you to your current position. I realized early in my career that I wanted to work in the areas of nonprofits and philanthropy. After many years of working for nonprofits like the American Red Cross and two community foundations, I thought consulting for these types of organizations would be a good way to balance motherhood and work for the first few years after our daughter was born. My consulting practice became so successful that I continued doing that for many years. I joined the Holocaust Museum as CEO about one year ago. I knew from my kids’ personal experiences that its education programs were top notch and I feel so strongly that its mission to inspire action against bigotry, hatred, and violence is so important in our world today. My connections with so many local organizations also help me create new partnerships for the museum. What do you love about your job? I knew I would love helping the Holocaust Museum with its next stage of growth as an organization. The opportunity to lead a capital campaign for a new, larger facility and be part of a team to create updated exhibits is incredible. What I didn’t realize was the amazing interactions I would have with Holocaust survivors and their adult children who also share their parents’ stories with students and museum visitors. Our volunteers inspire me every day.

Tell us about your husband and kids. My husband Carl grew up in Naples, then moved to California for graduate school and work in Silicon Valley. A few years after we met, Carl suggested we move back to Naples to the “bubble” where he grew up. It has been a great place for us to raise our family. Both our kids were born in Naples. Ashley is 15. She is very creative and loves musical theater. She has been in dozens of shows with KidzAct at The Naples Players and at church since she was five years old. CJ is 12 and plays basketball and tennis. He has also more recently started performing with KidzAct. Both our kids are excellent students and we are very proud of them! Volunteer positions. I am a graduate and member of Greater Naples Leadership and served on the board for two terms after graduating. I currently serve on the board of The Naples Players, am a member of the Community Services Advisory Board for the City of Naples, am an Ambassador for the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, and serve as past chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. How do you balance being a mom with your professional and charitable obligations? When my kids were younger I often brought them with me to my charity events, such as walk-a-thons, art fairs, etc. They have learned a lot about giving back and volunteering by helping at events and listening to me talk about my nonprofit and volunteer work. They both give to charities they care about which makes me very proud. My husband and I share being the kid-taxi to all their various activities. We like to watch movies together, play ping pong, travel some during the summer, take our boat down to Keewaydin, and go on weekend trips around Florida.

How to Choose and Use Sunscreen

unscreen is a part of our lives here in Southwest Florida year-round, but since it’s summer and we are all spending more time at the beach and in the pool, it’s the perfect time to make sure we are choosing and using sunscreen correctly. There are so many sunscreens out there: how should I choose one? Let’s look at the reasons we need sunscreen: UVA and UVB sunrays. UVAs are present year-round and penetrate the skin deeper than the UVBs, causing deeper and longer lasting damage like wrinkles, sun damage spots, and cancers like melanoma that start in the deeper skin layers. UVB rays are more intense in summer when the sun is closer to the earth. They are thought to cause sun burns and skin cancer more than UVAs. Choose a broad sunscreen that covers both type of sun rays. Studies show that the sun exposure and skin trauma like sunburns and deep tanning incurred during childhood causes skin damage we see as adults. Avoiding skin cancer and other the skin damage starts in childhood by using sunscreens daily and year round. What SPF is the best? Sun protection factor (SPF) is what gives the sunscreen it’s protection value. SPF of 15 provides 93% coverage or protection, while SPF 30 offers 96-97% protection. It has been noted that an SPF of more than 50 may not offer more protection than lower SPFs. Use at least SPF 30 with infants and children and

those with fair skin that burn easily. What is the best way to apply sunscreen? Sprays, creams, or lotions (waterproof or not) – sunscreens should be applied at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplied every 2-3 hours. Reapply every 1-2 hours if sweating heavily or getting wet, even with waterproof sunscreen. The sunscreen with the most oils stays on longer, so look for this to help keep protection longer. Don’t forget your lips and ears, and scalp for those with thin or balding hair. If you have sensitive skin, avoid sunscreens with PABA and fragrance, as these tend to cause more skin reactions. Apply in a small area to test for

a reaction before applying all over. Each sunscreen uses different chemicals to provide protection. Zinc oxide and titanium oxide offer the most protection and are not absorbed by the skin, which is very important for infants and children. Should I use sunscreen on my baby? Sunscreen should be used only when necessary, and then sparingly, for infants younger than six months. The best way to protect an infant’s skin is by using hats and light-weight clothing and keeping the baby in the shade. Never use an adult sunscreen on a baby younger than six months. Children older than six months can use adult sunscreens, but sunscreens made for children are preferred. Adolescents may want to look for those that do not clog pores, noted by noncomedogenic on the label. For mature skin, choose one that has antioxidants that helps with aging skin. Some studies have shown improvement of previous sun damage on skin while using this type of sunscreen daily. All in all, what is important is to pick a sunscreen that feels good on one’s skin and to use it correctly. Reapply as indicated on the label. Remember, the sun is out all year, and in Florida more often than not. And the sun can be harmful at any time of the year, even on a cloudy day or in the middle of winter on the ski slopes. Clouds or no clouds, protect yourself and those you care for year round. Remember, use it daily and be safe.

The Unexpected Costs of Caring for Elderly Parents in Your Home

ulti-generational households are becoming the new (or maybe it’s really old) in-vogue way to handle the care of aging parents. And I’m all for it so long as you consider the implications and set your family up for success. With Mom or Dad moving in, you can anticipate some extra expenses; not just financially, but also emotionally. It’s hard to know what to expect, and you might face costs you didn’t see coming. Having an elderly parent move in with you is a major life event that requires financial and emotional preparation. Here is a rundown of some unexpected costs of caring for elderly parents to get you thinking about what lies ahead if you decide to move mom or dad into your home. Remodeling. Many people don’t think about the modifications they might need to make to their home to welcome an elderly parent. If your parent is living with you long-term, you will want to make him or her comfortable, which might entail adding a new addition to your home, creating a private living space out of a shared area, making accommodations for single-level living if your parent cannot navigate the stairs, or adding mobility adaptations such as a walk-in bath or chair lifts. Lost Work Productivity. Moving your elderly parent in, helping him or her get acquainted with the area, and checking out activities can all eat into your work week. Expect further loss of productivity if you have to take your parent to run errands, to medical appointments, or to therapy sessions. You can look into senior transportation services if you are unable to take time off from work, but remember to budget for the extra expense. Home Help. If your parent is interested in independent daytime activities, visit a nearby senior center for information on classes and programs. If your parent requires more intensive care, assess adult day care centers that provide rehab, meals, counseling, and therapeutic activities. If you are providing full-time care in your home, look into respite or companion services to give you a break and help your parent expand his or her social circle. In-home care can be a significant expense, but unless you are able to take time away from your busy day, your elderly parent might need it. Long-term care insurance will sometimes cover some or all of the costs, and you might be able to get assistance from certain programs through the VA or other community organizations. Miscellaneous Household Expenses. The costs of simply having another household member can be unexpectedly high, especially if that member spends most of his or her day at home. You should expect such extra expenses as increased electricity bills, special foods, and personal care products. Remember that elderly parents have special needs, and those needs can be expensive. Medical Expenses. Even with insurance, your parent might have steep out of pocket costs for co-pays, prescriptions, mobility aids, supplements, vitamins, and other uninsured medical expenses.

For certain conditions, these costs can quickly add up. Long-Term Expenses. As your parent ages, his or her needs will change, too. These changing needs can result in unexpected long-term costs. When your parent’s retirement funds are exhausted or when they face deteriorating health, you might have to consider the staggering costs of long-term care in an assisted living facility or nursing home. Therapy. Moving mom or dad into your home could bring up all of the unresolved emotional issues that have not yet been addressed within your family dynamic. This isn’t something to be afraid of, so long as you have the right support. On the contrary, it can be a great opportunity to heal inter-generational wounds that would otherwise get passed on to you and your children and their children. Caring for an elderly parent can result in both unexpected expenses and unexpected benefits. How to Plan a Photography Safari

photography safari, or photo scavenger hunt, is a creative, interactive way to usher your kids away from screens and out into nature this summer. Getting kids outside is more important than ever. The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that kids are spending upwards of seven hours a day with screen technology, which means less time outside playing. According to a nationwide poll conducted by The Nature Conservancy, only about 10 percent of children spend time outdoors everyday. In the poll, kids said they aren’t interested in being outside, they don’t have access to parks or outdoor recreation, or they’re uncomfortable outdoors. But spending time outdoors has numerous mental and physical heath benefits. Research finds that kids who spend time outside are more creative in their play, more physically active and have enhanced attention spans. And as they get older, children who’ve spent time outdoors show a greater appreciation for the environment. I found that by taking my nine and 11-year-old sons out on a photography safari at one of our local parks, we were able to slow down and intentionally observe nature’s quiet rhythm, including wildlife, insects, and seasonal plants and colors. Here’s how to plan a photography safari with your family: Select a location. Parks with nature trails, botanical gardens, nature centers, and zoos provide plenty of material for a safari. Or start in your own backyard.

Consider the time commitment. Set aside 30 minutes to an hour. Or, if you’re on vacation, turn the safari into a multi-day event where snapshots are collected over the duration of your trip. Gather your supplies. If you don’t have a digital camera and you’re uncomfortable with your child borrowing your phone or iPad, check out inexpensive, kid-friendly digital camera options available online and at large discount stores like Walmart and Target, or purchase a disposable camera. Also, pack sunscreen, bug spray, water, and snacks. Construct your list. Do some advance research of your destination to decide what to include on your list. Maybe you plan to hike in a forest or camp at a national park this summer. Make a list of animals, plants, birds, or landscapes to be on the look-out for. Decide how many and what types of items to put on your list according to the age of your child. Types of lists. If you’re going to the zoo, you might craft a list of adjectives that describe different animals. For example, look for animals that are striped, have tusks, swim, waddle, fly, etc. I opted to keep my list for the park general and stuck to having my kids search for particular colors, shapes, and textures. To challenge kids who are already handy with a camera, you might have them hunt for interesting angles, lighting, and reflections. Establish ground rules. For our safari, we decided that we couldn’t choose the same subjects to photograph. Consider how NEAPOLITANfamily • July 2018

you will structure your hunt. For example: Can we help each other? Is there a time limit to complete the list? Can we only shoot natural objects or are manmade subjects game too? Will we head out together or split into groups? How competitive do we want the hunt to be? Decide if you want friendly competition. I opted not to make our safari a competition with prizes at the end. But you could, especially if you’re hosting a large group of kids that you plan to split into teams like a Boy Scout/Girl Scout group or for a birthday party. Dollar stores offer a variety of inexpensive prize options. You might award prizes to teams who captured the funniest, most striking, or most creative images. Review and discuss. Go through your photos together and share what you like about each other’s photos. Ask your kids about their favorite shots and why they like them. Make it seasonal. Help your kids see the beauty of the changing seasons through the eye of their cameras. They may be surprised about how much nature has to offer even in the winter. Look for wintering birds, animal prints in snow, wild grasses, and stick-like tendrils of ivy that will resume its climb when spring arrives. My sons and I began to see all kinds of various shapes and interesting colors that we’d never before noticed when we’d visited the park in the past. We watched a goose swimming gracefully across the lake, a fisherman casting his line, and a kayaker paddling smoothly across the water. We peered over a bridge and marveled at the geometric design engineers used to build the lake’s dam. And best of all, while we walked side by side, cameras in hand, we simply enjoyed each other’s company.

July is National Blueberry Month: 11 Ideas for All Things Blueberry

y little girl Hannah loves blueberries. My son on the other hand, not so much. With July being National Blueberry Month I thought it would be fun to come up with as many blueberry-loving ideas as I could. After all, what’s not to love about this indigenous flowering plant? Here are 11 kidfriendly ideas for all things blueberry. 1. Blueberry Pickin’ Patch. Kids love anything hands-on. Look on the Internet or visit your local Chamber of Commerce to find out where the nearest blueberry patches are. Set a date, load the kids in the car, and show them first-hand where to get this delicious fruit. 2. Blueberry Pancakes. It’s Sunday morning and your family is waking up to the smell of delicious blueberry pancakes sizzling on the griddle. If they want to help, drop the batter on the griddle and let your kiddos plop blueberries in the batter (with supervision, of course). This healthy, yummy breakfast will be sure to satisfy everyone’s appetites. 3. Flavored Water. Add a little oomph to your water and throw in a couple of blueberries for more flavor. 4. Smoothies. Add fresh blueberries to your smoothie for added antioxidants or better yet, add frozen blueberries to get that extra icy texture. 5. Rainbow Platter. Assemble a cute fruit tray and arrange different pieces of fruit by color to make a rainbow. Blueberries can be the ‘blue’ ray in the rainbow and the kids will love that you’ve recreated something so cool! 6. Connect the Blueberries. Get a pint of blueberries and arrange them one-by-one on a piece of construction paper to create a shape (example: circle). Have your son eat the blueberries as he picks them up to drawn a line where the blueberry was. When all of the blueberries are gone, your child has had a healthy snack and he’s learned how to create art out of something edible.

7. Growth. Plant a blueberry bush with your children. This will be a great way to teach them how to get their hands dirty while seeing the fruits of their labor for years to come. 8. Ice Cubes. Fill up your ice cube tray and let your daughter put one or two blueberries in each cubicle. Put them in the freezer and voila! Throw them in your next glass of water and now you have a pretty and yummy drink. 9. Jam. Who doesn’t love jam? Find an old family recipe or scope one out on the Internet. Do most of the leg work but let your kids get involved in the kitchen by having them ‘measure’ out the blueberries to put in the pot for boiling down with sugar and water. 10. Road Race. Let your son line up blueberries on the floor or table to make ‘roads’ where his matchbox cars can drive along. He’ll love the idea of building his own racetrack and you’ll love the extra time to get things done around the house! 11. Fun Facts. Let school-aged children get on the computer and see how many facts they can find about blueberries. This is a great way to teach them about taking something from the environment and picking it up apart to learn all that they can. Be sure to try some of these ideas for National Blueberry Month. Simple and Delicious Blueberry Recipes to Make With Your Kids Banana and Blueberry “Ice Cream” Recipe by The Bon Appétit Test Kitchen, from www.bonappetit.com 4 firm ripe bananas, cut into chunks, frozen overnight 1 cup blueberries Pinch of kosher salt Purée bananas, blueberries, and salt in a food processor, scraping down sides as needed, until smooth and creamy. Cover and freeze. Let sit at room temperature 10 minutes before serving. Ice cream can be made 5 days ahead. Blueberry-Chia Ice Pops Recipe by Nicole Rucker, from www.bonappetit.com 1 cup blueberry–chia seed jam ¾ cup coconut water 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice Pinch of kosher salt ½ cup fresh (or frozen, thawed) blueberries Special Equipment: Six 4-ounce ice-pop molds Purée jam, coconut water, lime juice, and salt in a blender until smooth. Add blueberries and pulse just to break up some of the berries. Pour into ice-pop molds, insert sticks, and freeze until solid, at least 3 hours. Run under hot water for several seconds to unmold. Can be made 1 week ahead. Quick and Easy Blueberry Muffins Recipe Recipe by Adam and Joanne Gallagher, from www.inspiredtaste.net 1½ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup granulated sugar, plus 1 tablespoon for muffin tops ½ teaspoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 ⁄3 cup neutral flavored oil 1 large egg 1 ⁄3 – ½ cup milk; dairy and non-dairy both work 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract 6-8 ounces (about 1 cup) fresh or frozen blueberries Heat oven to 400 degrees. For big-topped muffins, line 8 standardsize muffin cups with paper liners. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add oil to a measuring jug that holds at least 1 cup. Add the egg then fill the jug to the 1-cup line with milk (1/3 to 1/2 cup milk). Add vanilla and whisk to combine. Add milk mixture to the bowl with dry ingredients then use a fork to combine. Do not over mix. Fold in the blueberries. Divide the batter between muffin cups. Sprinkle a little sugar on top of each muffin. Bake muffins 15-20 minutes or until tops are no longer wet and a toothpick inserted into the middle of a muffin comes out with crumbs, not wet batter. Transfer to a cooling rack. To store, place them in a plastic bag, seal, and store at room temperature for 2 to 3 days. To freeze, wrap them tightly in aluminum foil or place them in freezer bags. Freeze for up to 3 months.

How to Stay Safe Online While Traveling (or at home)

ummer is the time for relaxing. After the long months of waking up early, making school lunches, sitting in carlines, and struggling through homework, it is time to get away. And whether ‘getting away’ for your family is going across the country or staying right here in Naples, it is important that you do it in the safest way possible. Nowadays, technology is everywhere, and is almost impossible to get away from, especially when it comes to the kids. It is so important to make sure you and your family understand the consequences of using technology while traveling (or just in general). Pat Crave, the director of the Center for Cyber Safety and Education in Clearwater, answered some questions for Neapolitan Family about internet safety while traveling.

What are your top tips for Internet safety while traveling? • Don’t post pictures on social media of your vacation while you are still on the trip. This could alert thieves that your home is unattended. • Don’t connect to unsecure Wi-Fi at your hotel or during your travel. If you don’t have to enter a password, or the password is generic and the same for everyone, it isn’t secure. If you do have to connect, don’t do any sensitive transactions like check bank accounts, etc. • Bring your own phone chargers and cords. Don’t use those free stations (with their cords) that you find in public places. You don’t know what that cord is really connected to behind the kiosk. Plug into a wall plug like you would normally do.

Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections on your devices when you are not using them. This will limit hackers’ ability to connect to your device without you even knowing it (good advice all the time, not just traveling). How can we make parents more aware of the dangers? Most parents are intimidated by technology today. It is all new to us and we can’t keep up with the constant changes. Instead of embarrassing ourselves with “stupid” questions to our children, we go along with what they are doing and saying without doing any homework on our own. What parent hasn’t asked their child for help with a phone or computer? We live with the belief that our child won’t do anything dangerous or stupid online. But their definition of dangerous is different than ours. They grew up chatting with strangers online, giving out personal information to online friends, and downloading the latest apps. All things we were raised to never do. Their trust level is high and suspicions are low. Parents need to be involved in what their child is doing online. They need to have conversations and ask questions. I’m not saying you have to interrogate them but be involved. Help them understand the dangers that exist online and help them learn how to make good decision. On our website www.SafeAndSecureOnline.org/parents you will find videos and tip sheets to help parents with these exact issues. With many apps, like SnapChat, locations services are turned on, and most people don’t even realize it. Why is this dangerous? This is an issue with most apps and with phones themselves. We all need to go through our devices on a regular basis and turn off the unnecessary tracking and notification settings on our phones and apps. Did you know there is a tracking device or geo-tagging on your phone’s camera? It not only takes a picture but marks exactly where it was taken. So, when you post it online someone can figure out where you are or where you live, all hidden in a photo. The danger of tracking is just that – you are giving away personal information that isn’t necessary. There is no need for strangers to have all that information. It can lead to stalking, harassment, bullying, or worse. What should people know before using public Wi-Fi? You should avoid using public Wi-Fi if possible. That includes ones at your hotel and local coffee shop unless you know it is secure. If you don’t have to put in a password or it asks for a generic password like “hotelguest,” then it is not secure. If you are given a unique password when checking into the hotel, you are more likely to be on a secure network. Often that password will be your last name and room number that no one else would know. Don’t hesitate to ask at the desk about their security. Don’t be fooled by the name that comes up on the Wi-Fi. When setting up a Wi-Fi connection you can name it anything you want. So just because it says your hotel name, your favorite coffee shop, or “Secure Wi-Fi”, it doesn’t mean that it is a trusted site. Pat Crave’s best (and most effective tip) is also the most simple, yet hardest for many of us, to carry out. Remember you are on vacation … UNPLUG! Get off the grid for a few days and enjoy your time together. Make memories that you can post about later when you get home. Your friends (and work) will all still be there when you get home.
