THIS MONTH: Summer: Be Prepared
Senior year of high school feels a lot like when I was pregnant. There are nine months of preparation, of firsts and lasts, buying items you can’t believe you will need, and random episodes of crying. When I was expecting my oldest child, I would sometimes walk by the room I was preparing for her and the sight would startle me. There was a crib for someone I had not met. Neatly packaged items I was told I could soon not live without. Tiny clothes hanging in the closet, waiting for someone to wear them for the first time. Empty picture frames waiting to capture life’s moments. And I would try to imagine it all, and what life would be like when new life would fill this room. Now, I walk by that same child’s room 18 years later, and I am still startled by what I see. New clothes with tags scattered on the bed and the floor. Half empty water bottles. Picture frames filled with special moments. Neatly packaged items we are told she can’t live without in her new dorm room. Random silverware and phone chargers that I thought I had lost. Her cap and gown hang from the door adorned with cords and sashes, representing all the accomplishments, big and small, that we celebrated along the way. And I try to imagine what this room will be like when she’s gone later this summer. No matter what life stage you are in, summer is a time for preparation. Transitioning from the routine of the school year to a much anticipated vacation or summer camp. Preparing for the first day of kindergarten or college. Naples best-selling author Kelle Hampton speaks to us about her inspiration for “Once Upon a Summer,” her can’t-miss guide to preparing for a carefree yet well-planned summer on page 42. Recent Florida State University graduate Rebecca Barton helps parents prepare to send their kids off to college with her ultimate packing list of what you do and don’t need in your first dorm room on page 36. Don’t forget to prepare for hurricane season, which starts on June 1! Turn to page 40 for our pull-out hurricane preparation guide, and use it to shop during the Florida Hurricane Supplies Tax Free Holiday, May 31- June 6. Happy Father’s Day!

Immokalee Foundation Students Enjoy ‘Fun Money’ Scholarships
F
or students enrolled in the Immokalee Foundation’s programs, there is one scholarship that’s not based on academics, test scores, grade point averages, or class standing. This scholarship is just for fun. Knowing that young people from Immokalee usually have limited resources, Dr. Massoud Eghrari of Naples once again provided “fun money” scholarships to first-year college students who completed an application and wrote essay about what they would do with the money. In the spirit of the award, the students are required to spend the $500 on themselves, rather than others. “With the money your scholarship provided, I was able to purchase little things that made me happy and that I normally wouldn’t purchase,” wrote Daisy Matias in a thank-you letter to Dr. Eghrari. Matias also went out to dinner with friends. “Being able to do that was very important because socializing is a great way to unwind and create memories of fun experiences. I am extremely happy and thankful that I was able to enjoy some good food and have a nice time with people I cared about, without having to worry if I could afford it,” she wrote. Yuridia Zaragoza’s dream as a child was to see the Cinderella Castle at Disney World. “Because of you, I was able to do so,” she wrote. Zaragoza also visited Universal Studios. “With the money I was able to go shopping. I got new jackets, pants, and new shoes. Thank you again for your generosity and support,” Mackenson Yrelus wrote in his thank you letter. At least one student became wiser for the experience – as well as a bit wealthier in material goods. “I had so much fun being able to swipe my debit card and purchase anything my heart desired,” wrote scholarship recipient Jonathan Martinez. “I felt like over the course of my shopping spree, I became more obsessed with myself as well as a bit selfish. I also didn’t think twice about the price of things until the $500 were all gone,” added Martinez. His thank-you letter summarized his feelings this way: “Overall, it was an experience I’d love to ‘endure’ again in the future.” For more information, visit immokaleefoundation.org or call 239-430-9122.

YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH
By Jorge Camina, MD, Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida
Tips for Picky Eaters
I
t can be frustrating when one day your toddler loves peas and the next day it is a battle to get one green morsel past his locked lips. However, there is no need for concern because picky eating is very normal toddler behavior. Take baby steps. Around age 1, a child begins to develop food preferences. Preferences can be based on taste, texture, color, smell, and/or simply noticing how others react to the food, all of which can be overwhelming to a child. To reduce overstimulation, introduce only one new vegetable and/ or fruit per day. If your child refuses a food, don’t give up. Continue to serve small portions of the same vegetable or fruit for three to six months. It can take a toddler 10 or more tastings before her taste buds accept a new flavor. This consistency gets her used to the taste, texture, and visually seeing the fruit or vegetable on her plate. Once your child starts eating the new food, use the same technique to introduce another new flavor. Make it fun. Kids are more apt to try a new food when it looks or sounds fun. They aren’t just peas; they are power peas! Or, incorporate the new item into foods they love, such as pastas, soups, rice, or yogurt. Carrots, spinach, and broccoli are excellent starter vegetables because they are highly nutritious but, best of all, they easily can be combined with other foods or used with dips. Think carrots with peanut butter, broccoli topped with a sprinkle of cheese, cut up spinach in
If you are a picky parent, be extremely cautious about showing your food distastes around your child.
rice, or berries in yogurt or smoothies. Serve home cooked meals. Eat at home, family style as much as possible. When you are introducing a new food, eating at home is an excellent way to ensure consistency. Also, eating together as a family is a wonderful way to set a positive example for your picky child. However, if you are a picky parent, be extremely cautious about showing your food distastes around your child. Children will imitate others, so always keep conversation and facial expressions about food positive. Celebrate. After three days or three weeks, your child finally eats a bite of carrots. Celebrate! Simple acknowledgments such as exuberant clapping, praise, and hugs and kisses are highly encouraging. However, be cautious. Celebrations are not bribes. You want your child to have a healthy long-term relationship with food. Bribes can become expected and diminish your child’s exploratory process to discovering new foods. Ask. Involve your child in the meal process. You may be surprised to hear what he would like to try. Or give him a choice between, for example, two florets of broccoli and butter or five string beans with salad dressing. And if your child loves to eat a specific fruit or vegetable, let him go crazy! Be patient. Remember, you are trying to instill a healthy lifelong relationship with food; this will take time and patience. However, if you are concerned about your child’s diet, be sure to talk to your pediatrician.

ational Signing Days are an annual tradition among student-athletes. It’s a day students get to stand in front of family and friends to celebrate signing that allimportant National Letter of Intent to play a sport at the college or university of their choosing. Just a few years ago, those National Signing Days led Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) to ask a very important question: “Why only athletes?” Successes should be celebrated whether athletic or academic. Our scholars certainly deserve their moment to shine. And that’s where the creation of Academic Signing Days developed. Every May, CCPS seniors who receive full-ride academic scholarships are celebrated across the district. Barron Collier High School’s Melsy Salguero thinks it’s “awesome” that we’re mixing sports with academics. She was one of nine students honored at the school’s recent Academic Signing: “I felt really appreciated … it was good to have all of the support.” Jen Mitchell, CCPS school board member, attended Gulf Coast High School’s

Anytime we can celebrate the kids is a good time.” For Palmetto Ridge High School’s Angie Alvarado, a summer internship at Arthrex helped solidify her decision to study biomedical engineering. She will be attending Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. When she received her acceptance letter, her first call was to her mom, who has always been her biggest supporter. In the fall, Angie will begin her dream of becoming a biomedical engineer to design prosthetics for child amputees. Immokalee High School’s Noe Vega is heading to Saint John’s University in Minnesota to study psychology, which he plans to use toward a career in criminal justice. “From a young age, I was always amazed by how police officers, and anyone in the criminal justice field, would go out of their way to help people who need it most. They’re always there when you need them,” Vega said. He also gives credit to his mom for his motivation: “Being raised by a single mother, I really saw the hard work that she put in and it made me value my education a lot. I used that motivation to keep going, doing the best that I could do.”

FATHER’S DAY
By L J Kunkel
O
U.S. Dads Are Getting Older Does It Matter?
ver the past few decades, women have been waiting longer to have babies. It’s no surprise considering reproductive advancements (like egg freezing) and the fact that more women are pursuing higher education and career goals, leading to a delay in baby-making plans. You can probably guess that the average age of men becoming fathers has risen, too. A study published in Human Reproduction analyzed statistics from 168,867,480 live births from 1972 to 2015, as recorded by the National Vital Statistics System. The data showed that the mean age of men in the United States with newborns has risen from 27.4 to 30.9. That’s an increase of 3.5 years. Now, this doesn’t seem like a huge deal, but it does show a clear upward trend notable across all ethnic groups. Additionally, the rate of dads over 40 with newborns has more than doubled in that time period, from 4.1% to 8.9%. Further, the rate of fathers over 50 nearly doubled as well. (Famous example: George Clooney welcomed twins at age 56.)
What does it mean? We know that there are increased risks for women becoming pregnant at an advanced maternal age (over 35), but what effect does an older father have? “There is data that a man’s fertility declines with age. In addition, there are some potential risks to children,” said Dr. Michael Eisenberg, lead researcher in the study. “Our findings substantiate the need for further research on the health and social implications of older fathers.” The risks Advanced paternal age could carry risks for families, including: Delayed conception. A study published in Human Reproduction revealed that the older a man is, the longer it takes for a couple to conceive. Men older than 40 were 30% less likely to make a baby within 12 months as compared to those younger than 30. This could be due to changes in sperm quality, hormone levels, and overall reproductive function. Rate of miscarriage also increases with paternal age.

Birth defects and genetic disorders. As a man ages, sperm DNA damage and gene mutations occur at a higher rate, which can be passed on to offspring. A study published in Epidemiology reported that increasing paternal age is associated with a higher risk of cleft palate in babies, and other research reveals a correlation between advanced paternal age and conditions like achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that causes dwarfism. Psychiatric concerns. JAMA Psychiatry reports a correlation between fatherly age and risk of disorders like autism, psychosis, and bipolar disorder in children. More research also has shown a higher likelihood of developing schizophrenia. So is younger better? If you or your partner are in the “older” category, don’t fret just yet! The risks are still low overall. We’re talking total chance of up to 2% in most cases, so the odds of kids being affected by the above possibilities is minimal. What’s more impactful is the age and health of the mother carrying the baby in combination with fatherly factors. The benefits There are great benefits associated with older fathers, including: Emotional and financial stability. “Age brings with it emotional stability, psychological strength, and financial security,” said Pasquale Patrizio, MD, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine. With age comes wisdom, experience, and a more secure sense of self. An older person has been around the block and
is less likely to engage in unnecessary drama and immaturity. They’ve also had more time to further their education, pursue career goals, and achieve financial success. This all creates a more stable environment overall for kids. Smarter kids. Yes, there’s actual research on this! In a study published in Translational Psychiatry, kids were evaluated using a “geek index” for factors that indicate higher IQ, stronger focus abilities, and less concern with fitting in with peers. Scores tended to be higher in kids whose fathers were over 35 at the time of conception. Boys with dads over 50 at the time of conception were 32% more likely to score very high on STEM subject exams than those born to dads under age 25. Longer lifespan for children (and even grandchildren). By now you know that undesired changes in sperm occur as men get older, but there is one beneficial adjustment. Telomeres (components of chromosomes that protect against aging) become longer. Longer telomeres indicate longer life span. This trait is then passed on to offspring, meaning that future generations could naturally be set up to live longer. All things considered, if you want science to tell you the perfect age to have children, you probably won’t get a clear answer. Lately American fathers are taking a few more years to perfect their best dad jokes, and that’s totally okay! Originally published on parent.com. M
artin de St. Pierre was born at Langley Air Force Base between his father’s second and third tours in Vietnam. Throughout his father’s military career, the family lived in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Germany. After his father retired from the Air Force, they settled here in Naples, where Martin would grow up surrounded by family. Martin graduated from Naples High School and went on to get degrees in political science and Third World studies from the University of Richmond and a graduate degree in Latin American studies from the University of Florida. He then went on to have a 20-year career with Northern Trust Bank in Naples and Chicago before listening to his mind and his heart to work for his hometown community as the director of development for the Salvation Army. His wife, Emily, is a dermatology sales manager and regional trainer for L’Oréal ACD, La Roche-Posay, and CeraVe. Their daughter,

Olivia, is a sophomore at Barron Collier High School and their son, Owen, is a seventh grader at Pine Ridge Middle School. How did growing up in a military family shape your childhood? Moving so much as a child was difficult, but it provides two choices for you: Embrace it and put yourself out there, or retreat. Having to deal with constant change prepared me well as an adult to be comfortable in just about any situation. Why did you decide to leave Chicago? Chicago is such a great city, and we were set to become city parents, but the call to come back to Naples was strong and the right decision. It gave our kids the opportunity to have their grandparents in their lives which was not something I had. My father died in 2015 after dealing with Parkinson’s for many years. We buried him at Arlington, which was a very moving experience. My in-laws are wonderful and still very active. We see them almost weekly and they are involved in Olivia and Owen’s lives, which means so much. Tell us about a typical weeknight in your home. Like many families, there is rarely a typical night because of baseball, marching band, a work event, etc. We try to sit down for a dinner together a few nights a week, and we value that time. When we get home we all go our separate ways to enjoy whatever it is we like to do. Owen loves to fish so he might be down the street at the boat dock. Olivia might be reading or painting in her room. Emily has been going to a boxing class for the last few months, and I like to walk. We reconvene for dinner, and then it’s homework, etc. Just knowing we are all in the same house and happy and healthy is comforting. What does your family like to do together? We like to travel, and that could be just getting out of town for day or a longer trip. We might drive to Sanibel for lunch or Arcadia to shop the antique stores on Oak Street. Our best trips have been to Europe. We spent Christmas with family in Germany a few years ago. Then we went to England for some time in London and Hereford with friends. Germany at Christmas is almost indescribably beautiful. Some of our best times have been spent in Chicago and Michigan. We have taken the kids back to Chicago so many times they have become very familiar with the city and comfortable there. We try to get to Kalamazoo once a year, if not more. Especially in the fall. Emily is from there, and it’s a great city. I was fortunate to be able to travel extensively as a child, and we are fortunate now to be able to do the same with our children. For our children, we want them to see and truly understand that the color of your skin, the language you speak, who you choose to love, or what you believe are secondary characteristics to the one singular thing we all share, which is our humanity. COLLEGE
By Rebecca Barton
The Ultimate College Packing List
I
t’s hard to know what you should pack when heading off to college for the first time, starting from scratch and making sure you have all the essentials for a successful freshman year. With these items by your side, and a few left at the store, you can be confident that you are ready to tackle the year ahead. Bed Make sure you take steps to make your bed a comfortable space, as it will not only be the place you sleep but also where you watch movies and hangout, since your dorm room likely will be too small for much extra seating. Add a throw blanket so you can sit on your bed without getting it dirty. • Mattress pad • Comforter/duvet cover • Sheets (2 sets) • Pillows (1 or 2) • Pillow cases (2-4) • Chair pillow • Throw blanket Desk Your desk will be multifunctional – not only is it the place you study but also where you eat and one of the only flat surfaces you have to decorate. Don’t clutter it so much that you are unable to use it, but still add some touches of personality. If your dorm bed is on risers, your desk will be the closest flat surface. If you get a lamp

up with space-saving storage techniques to maximize the space you have. I used a basket on a windowsill to store study snacks. • Microwave (some dorms come with a microwave and some do not allow them. Check before purchasing.) • Basket for snacks • Tupperware • Cutlery/bowls/plates/cups

you think. Hangers will break more often than you think. Utilize storage systems to maximize space. • Hangers • Over-the-door mirror • Hamper with handles (handles make it easier to carry to the laundry) • Extra storage bins/drawers (wait to buy these until you see your dorm for the first time. Measure your space twice and buy extra storage once!) Bathroom The number-one rule of shared bathrooms is to keep the space clean. Don’t be the roommate who breaks this rule! • Toilet bowl cleaner* • Plunger* • Toothbrush • Toothpaste • Hand soap* • Shower caddy • Shower shoes • Steamer • Shower wrap/robe • A set of towels *not applicable if moving into a dorm with communal bathrooms
Décor Infuse your room with your personal style. However, if you have a roommate, respect that it is their space, too. Collaborate so your room reflects a style that fits both of you, or make sure you have clearly stated whose side is whose. • Rugs (two bath-mat sized or small rugs instead of one large one for easier cleaning) • Twinkle lights (will allow you to still see when your roommate is asleep, and adds some warm lighting to take away from the fluorescent lights of your dorm) • Storage cube (can act as both seating and storage) • Wall art/photos • Black out curtains Miscellaneous These are some necessities that you might overlook. • Vacuum cleaner (only one roommate needs one, so try to plan it out where you bring the vacuum and they bring a printer, or vice versa!) • Antibacterial wipes • Air fresheners
• First aid kit • Ethernet cable (extra long) • Locker lock • Command hooks/picture hangers • Extension cords/surge protectors (at least four) • Oil diffuser/humidifier Did not need From things I thought I would want to things I was told I would need, these items would have been better left at the store. • Locking trunk • Calendar/cork board/dry erase board • Bedside caddy • Extra seating. There is no room! Because space in your dorm will be so limited, make sure everything is multifunctional, like a storage that also can be used as seating. The best thing you can do as you move into your new home is to bring the essentials and give yourself time to settle in. As your year goes on, you will figure out exactly what you need to make your room yours!

How Avow is Helping Kids Grieve
Y
ou can almost smell the cookies baking as you approach Aunt Janet’s House, the new freestanding children’s bereavement center on the Avow Hospice campus in Naples. This charming and homey space, scheduled to open in early summer 2019, will be home for the Avow Kids program for grief and loss support. While Avow has been caring for grieving children since its founding in 1983, over the past two years the hospice has significantly expanded its programs for preteens and teens coping with loss. Aunt Janet’s House is a safe kid-oriented space where messy feelings are not only welcomed, but also encouraged, all as part of healing. The house is also a physical symbol of the multifaceted Avow Kids program, which offers a variety of services to children in need. “Children grieve differently from adults,” said Daniel Riggs, an Avow children’s bereavement counselor. “We support children affected by loss from death, illness, divorce, long-term military
deployment, incarceration, deportation, or some other type of separation,” he said. “Even losing a beloved pet can result in a grief response from a child, and some children can grieve when there is a change in their environment, such as moving to a new school.” Children also may react to an economic disruption in the family unit or be troubled by observing a national or international event. Traditions in a child’s cultural heritage can also affect coping styles. The Avow Kids program, which serves youngsters ages 5-17, is staffed by credentialed counselors who specialize in the field of family support and various focus areas such as art and music therapies. Programs include day camps, overnight camps, teen activities, family groups, book reviews, and individual meetings. All services are provided without charge. One of Avow’s longest running programs is its partnership with Collier County Public Schools. Avow counselors meet with

grieving children during the school day, a service particularly helpful to working parents. Counselors help kids deal with issues of personal loss, or with losses related to an event at school or with school personnel. “It is not uncommon for any type of loss to result in a decline in a student’s academic performance or an overall decreased interest in school activities,” Riggs noted. Just like activities in other Avow Kids programs, school groups offer youngsters art projects to express themselves by nonverbal means, as well as videos, storybook discussions, and the sharing of photos and memories. To give kids distraction-free opportunities to work through their feelings, Avow offers day and overnight sessions of Camp MendingHeart. Day sessions are held on the Avow campus or at local venues such as the Conservancy, while the two-night annual Camp MendingHeart program takes place at the Riverside Retreat in nearby Fort Denaud. “Our camps are amazing experiences for grieving children to heal as they find ways to help each other through sharing settings that are both fun and supportive,” said Riggs. “Children talk about their memories and enjoy sports, art, crafts, and music.” Recognizing symptoms Avow Kids counselors help parents and guardians recognize and understand what can be baffling symptoms of grief in their children. Adults may observe that their child expresses sadness only intermittently, or interspersed with periods of play. This does not mean that a child is being disrespectful or that he or she did not love the person who has been lost. Changes in a child’s normal behavior should be addressed with patience and understanding. Children could suffer separation anxiety, even blaming themselves for what has happened. Older children may ask philosophical questions about the meaning of life and death. Parents and other adults in the child’s life should answer questions in precise and easily understood terms, avoiding abstract and misleading expressions such as a deceased loved one is “sleeping.” Children can be prepared, to a degree, when a loved one’s death is expected. Professional support for an impending death can help maintain stability in a child’s life, and ease the child’s transition from expecting the loss to experiencing it. Here, too, the Avow Kids program can help both children and teens, and their parents. As Collier County grows and welcomes more young people and families, Avow expects to see an increased demand for Avow Kids services. The children’s bereavement staff completed 1,259 counseling sessions in 2018, more than double the number of sessions in 2017. The staff also held 427 group sessions in 2018 and 615 individual counseling sessions. As awareness of Aunt Janet’s House and the Avow Kids program grows, the hospice is gearing up to meet increased needs. “The Avow mission is ‘to create peace of mind by providing compassionate care and support to those who need us.’ We are here to fulfill that mission for the youngest of our community’s members as well as the oldest. Helping children and teens experience peace of mind and heart is our reason for getting up and serving every day,” Riggs explained. Aunt Janet’s House is located on the Avow campus at 1095 Whippoorwill Lane in Naples. Visit www.avowcares.org or call 239-261-4404. SUMMER
By Anna Snyder
Creating a Meaningful, Memorable Summer
K
elle Hampton of Naples is the New York Times best-selling author of Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Unexpected. It’s a memoir about becoming a mother to Nella, her second daughter, who has Down syndrome. In 2007, Kelle began writing her blog, ETST (Enjoying The Small Things). She writes regularly about the beauty inherent in the ordinary and the everyday – and the daily celebration and joy available there, publishing her family’s stories and her artful photography. When she received her daughter Nella’s unexpected diagnosis of Down syndrome, she embraced the beauty and joy available in that reality, too. Now that summer is here, Kelle is encouraging and challenging parents everywhere to embrace the beauty of the summer months, make meaningful memories, and connect. Her newest guide, Once Upon a Summer, is filled with tips, recipes, printables, and ideas for making this summer the best yet. I had the privilege of interviewing Kelle, and I’m pleased to share her perspective with you. Tell us about your family, your children, and your writing and photography. My husband and I together have five kids – his two grownup boys, who are out of the house now, and our three younger ones, Lainey (12), Nella (9), and Dash (6). Nella has Down syndrome, which seems like a real identifying characteristic, but it just blends in with all the other things that make our family who we are. I grew up with very creative parents, and creative expression has always been my personal therapy for everything in life, not to mention a way to experience things more vibrantly. Writing and photography are my favorite creative outlets, and they’ve been particularly useful in motherhood, allowing me to preserve this sea42

I have magical memories of summer from childhood – a carefree “the world is my playground” kind of feeling that unleashed with the first day off of school. Running through the backyard sprinkler, chasing the ice cream truck, catching fireflies, roasting marshmallows on family camping trips, and playing made-up games with my siblings in the back seat of our car on road trips – I’ve reconnected with a childlike excitement for these things after having kids. I’ve basically tried to take my over-the-top enthusiasm for summer and funnel it into an invitation to join me in this guide. There are activities for rainy days, tips for road and beach trips, recipes, crafts, an epic summer bucket list, inspiration for taking photos of summer memories, lists for best summer movies and books, and more. Summer is just as much about us having fun as it is our kids having fun. And if you work full time, have kids in summer camps, aren’t a “Pinteresty” mom, etc., this is for you too! I wanted everything in this guide to be accessible for anyone. Often, parents are excited about the idea of summer, but within a few weeks, they’re worn out and ready for the school year to start. What would you say to these parents? First of all, I’d say, “Don’t worry, you’re not alone!” Nothing makes you feel like a big summer loser parent more than looking at other parents who seem to have the attitude of: “I love spending every waking NEAPOLITANfamily • June 2019
minute with my perfect children,” when you’re googling “summer sleep away camps” to get a break from yours. You can be both a parent who loves summer and makes efforts to create fun and a parent who’s raising a white flag three days in. How would you encourage full-time working parents who want to create a summer full of memories for their children? Remember: quality over quantity. Have you ever taken your kids on some expensive vacation and walked through a crowded theme park for hours to make them happy, when at the end of the vacation, all they’re talking about is how much fun they had when you jumped on the hotel bed with them for 10 minutes? A summer full of memories isn’t about the number of hours or over-the-top events you give your kids. It’s about being present, having fun with them, and making the best of what you have, even if it’s just a few hours after work every night. There are a lot of magical summer memories we can give our kids in our own spaces with our given schedules. Sometimes all we need is a nudge and some creative inspiration. Tell us about your experience with becoming a parent of a child with Down syndrome. At first I was devastated when we received our diagnosis, and I accept that devastation as a part of my story. There’s so much I didn’t know about Down syndrome, and even more that I didn’t know about myself. Here’s what I know now: I get to experience what every other parent experiences but with this added depth. We celebrate first steps, dance recitals, new vocabulary, and school achievements just like everyone else, except we’re doing it with tears rolling down our cheeks as we’re smiling, clapping, and cheering “That’s My Kid!” And it’s because we know how hard she worked to get there. This diagnosis has become an invitation for our family to widen our circle, to recognize, love, and learn from those who are different from us, to celebrate little wins with more enthusiasm, to slow down and have more fun, and to push ourselves out of our comfort zones, and dream bigger. But mostly, it has become an invitation to love each other more deeply. Down syndrome has most definitely made me a happier mom. What advice do you have for parents who have children with special needs? My best advice for anyone else is the advice I
give myself every day: Don’t ever let your own fears or expectations limit Nella. Of course I want to protect her from being hurt, but she deserves the bigness the world has to offer everyone else. She’s shown me countless times that she can do what people think she can’t. It might take a little longer or look a little different, but she’ll figure it out, and her joy and pride in those moments is something I want her to experience over and over again in life. What are you and your kids most looking forward to this summer? My oldest daughter is doing her first sleepaway camp up north this summer, and I’m abnormally excited about the simple act of mailing her the “world’s best camp package.” More than anything, my kids look forward to traditions. We head to the same little place in Northern Michigan every year, bake pie from the same early morning strawberry picking adventure we repeat each year, watch Parent Trap from a living room fort on the first rainy day, and check off “Eat pizza on the dock” from the bucket list. But don’t worry, there will also be days I’m pulling my hair out and texting “When Will You Be Home?” to my husband. There seems to be a lot of pressure on parents to fill up their children’s summer schedule with trips, camps, and other structured activities. How does your family balance planned activities with summer freedom? I think it all goes back to the question, “Are you having fun?” If having a busy schedule and jumping from one activity to the next without a breath in between is fun for you and your family, then great! But if you aren’t having fun and are signing up for things because of pressure to deliver or fear of boredom, I’d suggest taking a second look at your plans and looking for things you can remove to create some space. Some of our most magical memories were born in downtime or out of boredom. We have lots of things penciled in our summer calendar, but there are more than enough “nothing” days to balance them out. Do you know what I’m really looking forward to this summer? The first day we stay in our pajamas, leave our breakfast dishes out, and watch movies and craft all day.
There are a lot of magical summer memories we can give our kids in our own spaces with our given schedules.

Destination: The Keys Where You Can Find Mermaids, SNUBA, and Tiny Key Deer
A
ttention little mermaids, middle-size mermaids, and grownup ones, too. The first known major gathering of mermaids in the Florida Keys is set to happen July 5-7. Rumors have it that mer-folk will be swimming in to Key West from faraway oceans for this super-cool weekend, which includes a parade, storytelling by sea captains and mer-folk, and close encounters with mermaids on land and under water. On Salty Saturday, you can have breakfast with mermaids on the beach (tickets required), watch the mermaid parade, and then enjoy music, food, and activities at the free festival. Sunday Fun Day has more free activities, and you can actually sign up for a personal swim with a mermaid in the glam Havana Cabana hotel pool for just $15. If you don’t already have your swim-safe mermaid tail, no worries; you can rent one there. Sparkly mermaid bling also is available at the Captain’s Mermaid Boutique, which is owned by an actual Key West almostmermaid. Festival proceeds will benefit ReefRelief.org, which sup-
ports pro-active causes like responsible sunscreen, going strawless, and coral camps for kids. See the festival de-Tails (get it?) at www. keywestmermaidfestival.com. Where to stay My new fave in the Middle Keys is Tranquility Bay, the oh-soadorable, lushly landscaped Bahamian-style resort at Mile Marker 48.5, just north of the famous Seven Mile Bridge. With its soft white sand beach shaded by tall coconut palms, three gorgeous swimming pools, a super-shallow bay for lounging, and a tin-roofed tiki hut restaurant at water’s edge, it’s sophisticated-casual at its best. Aptly named, it’s a tranquil family escape from all the Duval Street craziness (Mile Marker 0), yet close enough when you crave a mermaid festival or a conch train ride. There are WaveRunners, paddleboards, and kayaks for rent at the dock, plus sunset cruises and boat tours. tranquilitybay.com

Snorkel + scuba = SNUBA Snorkeling is great fun, but don’t you wish you didn’t have to hold your breath to check out a Nemo or Dory (or a mermaid) a few feet below the surface? If so, and if you’re at least 8 years old, you might just love SNUBA. This combo of snorkeling and scuba diving lets you breathe through a long hose that’s attached to the special air tank float above you. All you need is a mask and snorkel. No experience necessary! Clear water and coral reefs are important for SNUBA, so the only U.S. locations outside the Keys are in Miami, the Florida panhandle, Hawaii, and Southern California. Tilden’s Scuba Center (Mile Marker 49.5), which is closest to Tranquility Bay, offers a four-hour boat trip to two different reefs, starting at $165. Tilden’s will soon offer SNUBA experiences in the huge pool at the newly opened Isla Bella Beach Resort (Mile Marker 47). tildensscubacenter.com; islabellabeachresort.com Do stop in… If you’re on wheels, the bad news is that the Overseas Highway is the only way in and the only way out. The good news is, no matter where you are – Upper, Middle, or Lower Keys – there’s a quirky roadside attraction, tasty food, or a side trip worth the detour. It’s hard to miss the Midway Café & Coffee Bar (Mile Marker 80.5). This whimsical little confection of a breakfast and lunch spot is all teal, yellow, and aquamarine, named for its midway point on the Overseas Highway between Miami and Key West. Besides breakfast burritos, Cuban coffee, sandwiches, pastries, smoothies, and such (vegetarian and gluten-free choices, too), check out the artsy gifts and gourmet items. midwaycafecoffeebar.com

Next door to Tranquility Bay is the Sea Turtle Hospital, a 1950s-era motel turned rescue, treat, and release facility, complete with turtle ambulances and an operating room. Visitors get to tour the rehab pools with staff veterinarians and guides, watch turtle surgeries through glass windows and webcams, and even feed the permanent residents that can’t survive the wild. Bubble Butt, for example, has been happily swimming with his buddies in the huge saltwater pool for 30 years now. seaturtlehospital.org Also nearby is the renowned nonprofit Dolphin Research Center (Mile Marker 59), which offers close encounters with a resident pod of wild dolphins. dolphins.org
Okay, nobody simply stops in to the No Name Pub. First they have to find it. That’s literally their slogan: “A nice place if you can find it.” Helpful hint: It’s on No Name Key. The 1930s-era bait and tackle shop has had many incarnations (one of them Xrated), but since the middle of the last century it’s been an iconic must-experience pizza place with dollar bills covering the walls and fluttering from the ceiling. Bonus: Most of No Name Key is designated National Key Deer Refuge land, so you may spot some of the teeny tiny white-tailed creatures grazing in the neighborhood. nonamepub.com Stop in at the Key Deer Refuge Visitor Center (Mile Marker 30.4 on Big Pine Key) for your map to the Blue Hole and walking trails where you are most likely to meet Key deer in their true habitat. Best sightings are just after dawn and just before dusk. Note: Feeding Key deer is illegal. fws.gov/refuge/National_Key_Deer_Refuge Last stop Question: Where can you get real Key lime pie? Answer: Silly, silly question! The practical answer is anywhere in the Keys. You can get it piled a mile high with toasted meringue, laced in whipped cream, or stark naked, with or without a Key lime slice or a cherry on top. You can get it tart or sweet, firm or custardy, chocolatecovered and frozen on a stick, or even as a liquid in a mojito rimmed in graham cracker crust. And finally, the Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory (Mile Marker 92; at the tip of Key Largo) can hook you up with a whole pie to take home. blondgiraffe.com
