You probably are as tired of reading “This year is different” as I am of writing it. But, well, this year is different. Every October, we run several pages of fall festivals and Halloween events in Southwest Florida. And while that list in 2020 covers just two pages, the good news is that there still are plenty of ways to enjoy some fall family fun this year. Go to page 28 for the listings. We have worked hard to verify the accuracy of this information, but please check that the event is still taking place before you leave the house. If you aren’t yet ready to participate in public events for Halloween, learn about other options for celebrating the holiday with your kids on page 20. Another great way to get in the Halloween spirit at home is by making some of the recipes found on page 22 that celebrate a certain wizard and his friends who have an affinity for pumpkin juice. For me, fall in SWFL is theme park season. When my daughter was little, autumn was my favorite time to visit Disney World and Universal, with the somewhat cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. These parks, along with Legoland, have reopened to the public. Writer Anna Snyder talked with families who recently have visited Disney and Universal, and made her first trip to Legoland to find out what a day in the park is really like during a pandemic. ast month more than a dozen representatives of Lee Health had their heads shaved by local childhood cancer survivors in a fundraising effort for Barbara’s Friends, which provides equipment, staffing, and services to support cancer care for children at Golisano Children’s Hospital. The Perks of Visiting Theme Parks in a Pandemic
I
read a statistic at the end of July that 60% of Americans kept their summer travel plans. People are out, they want to connect with their families, and they want to have fun. It made me wonder … what is it like spending time at the major theme parks right now? Is it safe? Does it feel strange? Is it worth going? And – perhaps most interestingly – are the ride wait times any shorter? Legoland To get a sense of what the park experience is like right now, I spoke with several people who have visited the parks in recent weeks, and I trekked up to Legoland Florida in Winter Haven with my daughter. Given our relative lack of out-of-the-ordinary adventures over the past six months, the prospect of a day trip to Legoland proved screech-worthy for my daughter. She screamed so high and so loud that neighborhood dogs came running. And reality exceeded the anticipation, the hype, the expectations. As amusement park virgins, we adored our experience at Legoland, taking it all in and riding as many rides as possible. We spent time at the water park, packed lunches in case the concessions were limited, and enjoyed virtually nonexistent wait times across the park. More times than not, my daughter would politely ask the ride operators in her sweet voice, “May we please do this ride again?” And they would d happily comply. Though not all the rides were open, we thoroughly enjoyed the ones that were and made

immediate plans to return to Legoland. It was a perfect first park experience, and riding small roller coasters with a 5-year-old was a new kind of thrill for this overprotective-ish mama. Thinking of making a trip to Legoland? Here are some things to know before you go: • Legoland is still holding its annual Halloween event, Brick or Treat, which includes contactless candy distribution and the return of character photo ops as well as the fireworks display. If you’re craving seasonal celebration, this is it! Brick or Treat will take place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout October. • All guests ages 8 and older must wear masks on the rides. While you’re walking around the park, you are not required to wear a mask. • The park has limited operational hours: It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except for Wednesday, and the water park is open the same days from 12-4 p.m. • Guests are subject to a temperature check before entering the park. • The park has a reduced capacity, and no cash is accepted on site. • Legoland has significantly increased cleaning and disinfecting measures across the park. • Concessions are available, but the hours are limited. Guests may bring small, personal coolers that can fit in a backpack. • There are many hand sanitation stations throughout the park, and guests are strongly encouraged to use these stations throughout NEAPOLITANfamily • October 2020

There are markers on the floor to guide guests. Universal Orlando Felicia Gal, a senior at St. John Neumann High School in Naples, recently visited Universal Orlando Resort with her boyfriend, Jackson, just before school started in August. “Universal’s rides and overall atmosphere never fail to bring a smile to my face,” she said. Felicia appreciated the increased health and safety measures. “None of the rules in place bothered me at all. Universal was very adamant on keeping us social distanced and wearing masks. They gave us hand sanitizer before entering each ride, which made me feel a lot cleaner entering the attractions.” Ashely Shuell went to Universal with her husband and two boys – Brayden, 8, and Ethan, 6 – over the summer. The family enjoyed the fact that the park was mostly empty. “The wait times for the rides were not long at all,” Shuell said. “You could get off and on a ride over and over, which was a fabulous experience with two young kids. It felt like we owned the place. All the usual headaches of going to the park – crowds, parking, and wait times – were nonexistent for us.” Like Felicia, Shuell was impressed by the precautions taken by the park. “Our family welcomed the restrictions and safety measures. The protocols made us feel safer and showed us how much Universal cared for its guests. You could tell they really wanted to be open. We completed all food orders via the app, and the experience was much more efficient and expedited.” The Shuell family had a great experience overall. “Having masks on in the heat was somewhat challenging, but the benefits outweighed the inconveniences,” she said. “All of the safety measures made it feel safer than some of the everyday outings we attend at home.” Before you go to Universal Orlando Resort, here are a few things to know:

nostalgic feel that was so enjoyable,” she sad. “Since there weren’t the usual crowds, we were able to ride almost every attraction in about five hours. Most ride lines were about 5-15 minutes, and the more popular rides were 30 minutes.” In typical Disney fashion, the parks have gone full force on the safety measures. “I felt safer at Disney than I do at the grocery store,” Phillips said. “They have lots of hand washing stations, hand sanitizer before and after rides, and they clean the rides every 30 minutes. Disney requires mobile ordering for food, which limits lines and interactions.” She noted that all of the guests were adhering to the guidelines. “Everyone was very respectful and just happy to be there.” Julie Ojanovac, her husband, and two teenage daughters visited Disney World over Labor Day weekend. “Disney will do whatever it takes to create a positive, safe experience for everyone who visits the park,” she said. “Many of the measures in place made for a more enjoyable and efficient experience. I loved it.” As for wearing a mask all day in the heat, “We don’t mind at all – we’re happy it’s open. Plus, the cooling masks at Costco are outstanding and make for a more enjoyable Disney experience.” Ready to brave Disney World for a few days? Here are some things you need to know: • All of the Disney parks’ hours have changed, and they are operating at a reduced capacity. Disney World does not allow for park hopping at this time. Additionally, ticket prices have changed a bit, and there are a few different deals available to Florida residents. You must make a reservation to go to the park on the day you want to go. • All guests over the age of 2 must wear a mask. Masks must be worn over the mouth and nose. Disney team members will alert you if your mask dips below your nose. Additionally, all food must be eaten while sitting down in designated eating areas. Guests may not eat while walking around the park. • Concessions are limited to food made off-site and brought to the parks in order to ensure high levels of sanitation. Many of the regular Disney food items are not available at this time. • Disney World strictly enforces social distancing guidelines throughout the park, in ride lines, and on rides. • Disney World requires a temperature check to enter the park, and they clean and sanitize aggressively. So, get out there this fall and make some memories with your loved ones!

Collier Schools Resume In Person and Virtually

These terms would be heard repeatedly as families around Collier County began preparing for a return to school, and schools began preparing for the return of staff and students. While some families preferred to have their children back on school campuses, others felt it best to keep their children home. Options. During the summer months Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) was busy preparing and planning various options to meet the needs of its 48,000 students. On July 15, CCPS announced its reopening plan: Option 1 (on campus); Option 2 (Classroom Connect); Option 3 (eCollier Academy); and Option 4 (home education). We were proud to offer students and families the choice of in-person and virtual instruction. Around town, parents could be heard debating their choices. Fluid. As time progressed, details of the programs were adjusted slightly. Flexible. We asked parents for their patience and flexibility as we moved toward the first day of school, and we welcomed our students back, both in person and virtually, on Aug 31. “Today our campuses once again came alive with children learning in person and teachers making connections virtually to those learning at home,” said CCPS Superintendent Kamela Patton, Ph.D. “It was satisfying to see months of planning put into practice across Collier’s 2,300 square miles. We are grateful to our parents for their continued trust and patience while school and district staff work tirelessly to make sure student achievement keeps advancing, even in these unique times.” This is an innovative season of resilient determination. As with any ambitious effort, challenges are to be expected, and for many different reasons, some parents have inquired about a change in learning models. Pivot. For instructional continuity, CCPS is asking parents and students to commit to an instructional model (on campus or virtual learning)

To request a change, parents should inform their child’s school by Oct. 16 in preparation for the second quarter, which begins Oct. 30. For extenuating and unique circumstances, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school. CCPS appreciates the confidence students and families have expressed in the district with 60% of students on campus and 40% of students in virtual options. How to Safely Celebrate Halloween During a Pandemic
F
all has arrived, and Halloween will be here before we know it. Of course, it will not look or feel exactly as it has in the past due to COVID-19. But with a little bit of creative outof-the-box thinking, we still can make this holiday extra special for our kids. Now is the perfect time to start planning your safe, yet still super fun, Halloween celebration that your family will look back on in a few years and smile.
Here are a few ideas to start on your Halloween plans for your family. The goal is to keep kids socially distanced and prevent them from all touching the same candy, which seemed so normal just last year. It is also a wonderful chance to start new family traditions and try celebrating in a way you never even considered. Say boo on Zoom. For my daughter’s eighth birthday in April, we had to think fast to make sure she did not miss out on an enjoyable party with her friends. We had planned to have an animal-themed birthday at a local nature center, so we took the party online. The kids absolutely loved seeing all the creatures on their computer screens and asked tons of questions. For Halloween, you can set up an online party with family and friends and play lots of games, such as trying to guess who everyone is in their costumes, having a costume contest, doing a quiz like name that tune, and playing Halloween bingo. Parade safely. We have seen many families over the past several months celebrate special occasions with a socially distanced parade, either on foot or from their cars. My neighborhood held a meaningful parade for all the graduates in May. All the kids wore matching grad shirts and stayed the recommended 6 feet apart from one another as they made their way through the community. This easily can be done for Halloween as well. A car parade would also be a hit since all the cars could be decorated in a spooky way. Dig into some DIY. Take the focus off your kids missing the trick-or-treating by working on creative projects together as a family. Let this be the year you plan ahead and make all of your costumes from scratch. Your kids will get to choose exactly who they want to be and wear what they worked so hard on. You can also fill the day with enjoyable arts and crafts projects that you typically do not have time for if you are running around to Halloween parties. Have your own haunted house at home. Many kids look forward to walking through a haunted house at school or in their neighborhood. With social distancing being an issue, this will not

be possible this year. A great project for your kids is to set up their own haunted house. Depending on your own family’s COVID rules, maybe you can invite grandparents or cousins over for a fright night. Focus on fall foods. We can so easily get sucked into all the sugary sweets during Halloween. This year, focus on all the wonderful fall foods that go along with Halloween time. Stock up on apples, pumpkins, and different types of squash and turn them into tasty dishes. We always love toasting our own fresh pumpkin seeds after we finish carving our jack-o’-lanterns. If you feel comfortable and live in an area near an apple orchard or farm with pumpkins, you can head over and pick your own. Make it a movie night. Another wonderful way to distract your kids from missing out on typical activities like trick-or-treating is to set up the big screen to scare them silly. Well, we don’t really want to scare our kids too much. Look for age-appropriate movies for Halloween that they will love, such as The Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Hocus Pocus, Hotel Transylvania, Beetlejuice, and, of course, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Go against the grain. With so much upside down in 2020, this might just be the best year to go contrarian and ditch all the sugar and spook. Why not make it a healthy family night by putting together colorful, delicious treats out of fruits and veggies? Just hop on Pinterest for endless ideas to turn fresh produce into incredible creations that your kids will love. I know this year feels different, but there are so many ways to make it even better than before. Take advantage of this opportunity to spark some creativity for your family and you all may be thrilled with the memories you make that you will cherish forever.

Pumpkin Juice
A beloved classic, pumpkin juice is served with nearly every meal at the castle, as well as on the scarlet steam engine. This recipe is best served well chilled and over ice. Yields 6 servings. Prep time 5 minutes Chill time 1 hour to overnight 2 cups apple cider or apple juice 1½ cups peach nectar ¾ cup pumpkin puree ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1. In a large glass jar with a water-tight lid, combine all of the ingredients together. 2. Shake vigorously for 2 minutes or until everything is thoroughly combined. 3. Chill overnight for the richest pumpkin flavor. Shake thoroughly before serving over ice.
Prep time 5 to 10 minutes Cook time 5 to 7 minutes. 1 cup butter 1½ cups butterscotch chips, plus extra for garnish 2 tablespoons light-brown sugar 3 tablespoons maple syrup 3 to 4 cups buttermilk whipped cream 2 cups ice, for cold version chilled glasses, for cold version
Hot Version 1. In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter and butterscotch chips together until completely melted and smooth. 2. Add the brown sugar and maple syrup, and stir until melted and blended in thoroughly. 3. Pour in 4 cups of buttermilk. Keep mixing and stirring until the buttermilk comes to temperature. 4. Serve in a heat-resistant mug. 5. Top with whipped cream and garnish with additional butterscotch chips. Cold Version 1. 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Preheat the cast-iron skillet on the stovetop over medium-high heat. 3. Once the skillet is hot, add the ground beef and brown. 4. Drain the fat from the beef and return it to the skillet. 5. Add the peas, carrots, onion, and spices, and stir together until thoroughly incorporated. 6. Sprinkle the cilantro leaves over the top of the meat and veggie mixture. 7. Layer the mashed potatoes over the top and press down with a spoon, turning the potatoes into a “crust.” 8. Sprinkle the parsley flakes over the potatoes. 9. Drizzle the olive oil over the top of the potatoes and brush it across the top lightly with a pastry brush. 10. Put entire thing in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the potatoes turn a light golden brown. 11. Remove from the oven and let stand for 2 to 3 minutes before serving. ike most moms, our October MOMentum Mom wears a lot of hats. Rabbi Ariel Boxman wears a yarmulke, or kippa, to work as rabbi educator at Temple Shalom in Naples. Growing up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, she wore a swim cap as a competitive swimmer in high school. Recently, she started wearing the hat of the new director at Temple Shalom Preschool. Her favorite hat is the one of mom to her two boys, Jacob, 3, and Matan, 1. Where were you born/raised? I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, but spent my childhood in the Caribbean on the island of St. Thomas. My dad is also a rabbi, and he was the chief rabbi of the island. What was it like growing up in St. Thomas? Growing up in St. Thomas was very cool. I was on a swim team, and we practiced in the ocean. And when we had meets, we flew to neighboring islands to compete. The Jewish community was small, but very tight knit. Where did you go to college? I went to American University in Washington, D.C., where I studied international relations. I then 24

went on to rabbinical school at Hebrew Union College and was ordained a rabbi in 2012. I earned a master’s in education in 2013. How did you meet your husband? We met in Dallas, Texas. We were set up on a blind date and were engaged less than six months later. The woman who set us up had been trying to get us together for two years before we both finally agreed. She knew it would be a perfect fit. What brought you to Naples? My job at Temple Shalom. I was offered the job as its rabbi educator when I was nine months pregnant with my youngest son, Matan, and moved down here two months later. Tell us about how you became a rabbi. I went to rabbinical school for five years. additional four years in Cincinnati. What was your favorite part about being a Hillel rabbi? (a Hillel is a Jewish center on a college campus) I was a Hillel rabbi for one year (at Denison University) while I was still in seminary. I loved working with the students and being able to guide them along their spiritual journeys. I also had the opportunity to lead multiple Birthright trips to Israel and especially enjoyed seeing Israel through my students’ eyes. Editor note: A Birthright trip is an all-expense-paid organized trip to Israel that is open to all Jewish nonresident adults who are high school graduates ages 18-32 in an effort to bolster Jewish identity. What are some of your favorite rabbinical moments? My favorite part of being a rabbi is when I get to officiate at weddings. I feel so blessed to be able to play this part in bringing two souls together. I also love the opportunities that I have to engage with children and provide them with educational experiences. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. I feel lucky every day that I wake up and get to continue doing this holy work. What causes are important to you? I am a big proponent of peace in the Middle East. My husband is from Israel and all of our family is there. I support many organizations that work to bring peace to Israel and her neighbors. What are your hobbies? In my free time I enjoy going to the beach with my family and discovering new restaurants. I also enjoy climbing the aerial silks and dropping from great heights. Prior to moving to Naples, I worked out daily at a circus gym and loved the thrill of learning new tricks and routines. What is your family do for fun during the quarantine? We spend a lot of time in the pool! Both of my sons learned how to swim during the pandemic and we all have great Florida tans to show for it. What is your family looking forward to doing after COVID-19? My sons are excited to go back to Costco and enjoy the delicious samples. I am looking forward to traveling to Israel to see our family. What are you excited about in your new role as preschool director of Temple Shalom Preschool? I am thrilled to take on this role of preschool director. I have an incredible team of teachers to work with and the most adorable students in the world. Being able to greet smiling faces every morning and hear laughter in the hallways is the absolute best. My son Jacob will be attending Temple Shalom Preschool this year, and being able to see him daily is a real treat. What are your biggest struggles as a parent? Finding enough time to do it all! Being a working mom is challenging because I need to balance my professional aspirations with my desire to be the best mom and wife I can possibly be. I try to focus on one day at a time and take notice of “mom-wins” whenever I can. My heart especially goes out to all parents right now of young children. Parenting during normal times is a challenge, but even more so during a pandemic. I pray we all get through this and come out stronger! How did you celebrate the Jewish New Year with your family? We spent the holiday with my parents enjoying delicious food and apple cake for dessert. My family viewed [Rosh Hashanah services] from home while I lead services [at Temple]. Jacob likes to say that he is also Rabbi Boxman. He blew his shofar at home while Rabbi Miller was sounding his at the service. NEAPOLITANfamily • October 2020
