Help rescue at-risk teens from suicide! Every hour of every day, 225 children grades 7 through 12 attempt suicide in the U.S. But efforts are underway right here in Collier County to change that. Now that the school year is underway with the routine of bedtimes, bus routes, car line, homework, and after-school activities, it is hard to believe that at this point last year, we all had to abandon everything that was normal and helplessly watch the path of a category 5 hurricane headed right for us. Suddenly, everything that had fallen into place for the school year became scattered as we alternatively prepared our homes for the unknown and made arrangements to hunker down or to leave. One year later, many in our community are still struggling with recovery from damage to their homes and businesses, but the return of the school routine brings structure back to our lives and hope for a great school year. Many of you walked your kindergartners into school for the first time, or you might have followed the school bus and spied with your heart thumping hard as your watched your brave child find their way to the first classroom of their school journey. I remember that day so well; I was so sure my daughter would get swallowed up by those bustling halls and never find the right door to open. That little girl has successfully found the right doors to open now for 12 years, and as she begins her senior year of high school, she will complete the journey that started with a tearful mom that followed the school bus all the way to school. September MOMentum Mom Michelle Turchetta talks to us on page 20 about “walking the fine line between holding on and letting go,” regarding her students as well as her children. As area director of Easterseals Florida, she assists students with special needs with the transition into thriving adults. As a parent, she has the same goal: to raise adults and not children. Part of raising these “adults” is to expose them to the arts both in their education and after school. This can begin with singing to your baby (page 38) each night until they are old enough to play an instrument, put on tap shoes, or paint their first masterpiece. Turn to page 41 for our featured arts directory for ideas on where to start. You will find even more resources in our CCPS Fall Activities Guide, which came home with most students by last week of August. Happy September!

Girls on the Run Combines Efforts in Southwest Florida

T

he Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Collier County council has merged with the Girls on the Run of Southwest Florida council. The two organizations have joined forces in order to strengthen the local chapter of this national character development program for girls ages 8-13. “We’re excited to unite as one group, so that we can serve even more children at sites throughout Collier, Lee, Charlotte, and DeSoto Counties,” stated Christine McConnelee, executive director for the new Girls on the Run of Southwest Florida. She added that the number of program sites is increasing to at least 40 this fall, up from 24 sites that were operating this past spring. GOTR provides a 10-week character development program led by trained volunteer coaches who guide and mentor girls through a curriculum focused on teamwork, community service, and self-respect. The goal of the program is for participants to develop a stronger sense of identity, greater acceptance of themselves and others, and healthier habits through food choices and exercise. GOTR of Southwest Florida will serve at least 432 students in the fall. Nearly 40% of these children will receive a full or partial scholarships to participate. For information about enrollment, becoming a coach, volunteering, or sponsoring the program, contact Davina.Hartsfield@ girlsontherun.org or visit www.gotrswfl.org.

teens of Youth Haven with an education and hands-on encounter with rescue animals. “This collaboration is a welcome experience for the children and teens of Youth Haven,” said Jinx Liggett, Youth Haven executive director. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity for our children to learn and heal with the support of such a wonderful community partner.” The program connects children and animals that have similar traumatic pasts of being abused, neglected, or abandoned. A healing connection is made, and the animals help teach the children about kindness, forgiveness, gratitude, courage, and unconditional love. Youth Haven is Southwest Florida’s only emergency and residential shelter for children ages 6-18 who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Shy Wolf Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reconnect people and animals through education. Shy Wolf Sanctuary provides a permanent home to more than 60 captivebred or rescued exotic animals every year. The wolves and other resident animals are housed on a 2.5 acre property in Naples and are supported by over 30 active volunteers. For more information, contact Meredith Curley, Youth Haven director of development, at meredith.curley@youthhavenswfl.org or 239-687-5155.

FAMILY LAW

By Reuben Doupé and Dale Klaus

Building Your Divorce Team

T

he loss of a relationship can be one of the most impactful experiences that any individual will ever go through. While everyone recovers from the ending of a relationship differently, there will always be a sense of loss. In addition, you may feel a combination of other emotions: guilt, anger, disappointment, etc. Unfortunately, at the same time you are experiencing all of these emotions, you will be asked by your lawyer to assist in participating in making important, and sometimes life altering, decisions that will shape your future. Harnessing logic and critical thinking at a time when you are having an emotional reaction can prove to be an amazingly difficult task. For this reason, if you are emotionally struggling with your divorce, it is vitally important to have a divorce team to assist you. Depending on your needs, this will include your family law lawyer, to guide you through the legal process and look out for your finan-

cial interests; an accountant to assist your lawyer with the money issues to relieve you of this responsibility; and a therapist. Therapists come in many different forms and with different qualifications. It is important to find one with sufficient experience and with whom you can connect and trust. As much as family members can provide a good shoulder to cry on, they often are too close to the situation, and too inexperienced, to provide you with good advice on what is best for you. A properly qualified therapist will help you get through the turbulent times, so you can be as focused as possible when it comes time to assist your lawyer and accountant. Having a separate therapist may also reduce your lawyer fees. Most clients are very aware of what discussions need to take place with their lawyers and can monitor themselves. However, some cannot help but vent their emotions to or to seek advice from

their divorce lawyer. While lawyers may have practical advice based upon what their other clients have gone through, we simply are not qualified to be therapists. It is important that you seek help from the most qualified professionals. It takes a village to get through any difficult situation in life. Divorce is certainly one of those situations.

COLLIER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

P

By Jennifer Kupiec

Making Schools More Secure

arents, you did it! You made it through the first day of school. And while you’re probably getting used to the new schedules, teachers, and homework, you may have some questions about school security and what Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) is doing to keep your children safe. By now, you’ve probably noticed that our front doors are locked. Over the summer, each of our 50 schools received a new access control camera system. This is an enhancement to the existing visitor screening procedures we currently have in place. Please visit www. collierschools.com/keepcolliersafe to view our parent tutorial video for more information on this. Another enhancement this year will be an increased number of safety drills. These drills will ensure students know how to respond in the case of an emergency. All high school students will also be issued identification cards to be worn during the school day. This improvement will allow all high school staff and students to know who does and does not belong on campus. Middle school students will be issued identification cards later this school year. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), along with the Marco Island and Naples police departments, has scheduled a youth relations trained law enforcement officer at each Collier County school. This is accomplished through overtime when positions are vacant until full-time hiring is complete. CCSO has also focused on training these past months. While training in the law enforcement environment is ongoing, as tactics and threats evolve and change, specific training is delivered to our youth relations deputies as well as to our teachers and school administrators and staff. Also, additional emergency response equipment has been purchased and placed throughout school facilities. Another focus you’ll see this year is an effort to address mental health wellness. Safe, caring, and well-managed learning environments are critical components of academic, social, and emotional growth for students. Within such environments, comprehensive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skill development is imperative.

Above: L-R, Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, CCPS Superintendent Kamela Patton, and CCPS School Board Chair Roy Terry at Mike Davis Elementary in Naples on the first day of school last month. As a proactive approach to this important issue facing our students, CCPS has identified five SEL priorities for the 2018-2019 school year: 1. New student 30-60 day check-in (elementary, middle, high) 2. Handle with care (elementary, middle, high) 3. Buddy Bench (elementary) and We Dine Together (middle, high) 4. Principal-led SEL video announcements (elementary, middle, high) 5. Panorama SEL student voice survey (grades 3-5, middle, high) Visit this space ext month, when I’ll share what these five priorities mean for you and your child. Until then, enjoy the start of another fantastic school year!

COLLIER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

By Kristine Gill

Help Keep Kids Safe In and Out of School

S

heriff Kevin Rambosk and the Collier County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO) are asking the entire community to help keep our kids safe in school this year. “As all of us are aware, school safety is not just about traffic and slow-speed zones any more,” Sheriff Rambosk said. “It takes an entire community working together to keep our schools safe. We must all turn our safety awareness into action to keep our kids safe.” Sheriff Rambosk has five specific actions that all adults can take right now to keep our kids safe in school all year: 1. Use a gun lock on your weapons or keep them stored in a secure vault or safe. 2. Report suspicious activity, threats, social media posts, or pictures by calling 911 or non-emergency 239-252-9300. 3. Get adults and kids the support and help they need before a mental health crisis occurs. 4. Know what your child is seeing and doing on social media. 5. Pay attention to your driving and drive safely. This year Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) has taken specific actions to keep our schools safe: doors are now locked, a new access control camera system is in place in every school, more safety drills are scheduled and all high school students will be issued identification cards to wear. Law enforcement and all of public safety departments in our community also have taken many steps to enhance school safety: a youth relations trained law enforcement officer is scheduled at each Collier County school; specific training is delivered to our youth relations deputies as well as to our schools’ teachers, administrators and staff; and emergency response equipment has been purchased and placed throughout our schools. For more than 45 years, CCSO’s commitment to assigning certified deputies in Collier County schools to keep our kids safe has been strong, and we look forward to our entire community continuing to work together with us on this most important mission of school safety Here’s more information on those action items that Sheriff

Rambosk is asking every adult to take now: Lock your guns. CCSO and the Naples Daily News have partnered in a program to provide free gun locks to the community. Locks are available at any CCSO substation and will be available during CCSO safety events throughout the year. Keep your weapons secure in a gun vault or gun safe. Not only does this keep your weapons out of the hands of children, but protects them against theft. Securing your weapon is not just something to do at home: do not leave firearms in an unlocked vehicle! Report suspicious activity by calling 911 in an emergency or 239-252-9300 for non-emergencies. Get kids the help and support they need before a mental health crisis occurs. In addition to CCPS school counselors, the Collier County Youth Resource Center (239-252-0900), CCSO Youth Relations Bureau deputies, school guidance counselors, and the staff at the David Lawrence Center (239-455-8500) are just some of the available resources. You can also contact your family medical professional for help. Make a call and connect to resources that can help. Call law enforcement to report anything that resembles a threat, including statements, social media posts, and pictures. If you see something, say something and report it for immediate follow up. Call 911 or 239-252-9300. Know what your child is seeing and doing on social media. Monitor your child’s social media and talk to them about what they are seeing, reading, and posting online. It’s also important that parents discuss with their children the new level of serious consequences for making threats on social media. These new penalties that went into effect July 2018 make it a second-degree felony to create, post, or transmit a threat to carry out a mass shooting or act of terrorism. Having a felony charge is no joking matter, even if comments are made as a prank. And of course, drive safely! Pay attention to school zones, bus stops, and children biking and walking to school.

MENTAL HEALTH

By Scott Burgess, CEO, David Lawrence Center

#StandUp for Healthy Minds & Safe Kids

G

raduation parties and year-end celebrations for the class of 2018 were dampened by deadly shootings in the final days of school – one in a Texas middle school followed days later by another in Indiana. This, all while the Parkland school shooting was still fresh in our minds and hearts. All three shooters were students of the schools targeted – a sobering reminder of the importance of students’ mental and emotional well-being and the devastating effects that can occur when students turn their troubles outward. Sadly, our children are more at risk than ever. At risk of being bullied – in person or in cyberspace. At risk of suicide. At risk of being exposed to deadly opioids. At risk, seemingly more than ever, when they walk onto a school campus. Teenage depression and suicide attempts are on the rise. In a five-year span from 2010 to 2015, the number of 13-to-18-yearolds who took their own lives jumped 31 percent. A recent paper in Clinical Psychological Science noted that Generation Z kids – those born since 1995 – are “much more likely to experience mental health issues than their millennial predecessors.” It’s never easy to go through the angst of adolescence, but there’s no question that it’s now harder than ever. With 50 percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness beginning by age 14, the time is now to intervene to help our youth grow healthy minds and learn effective coping strategies.

Now that kids are back in school, David Lawrence Center (DLC), Collier County’s leading mental health and addiction treatment center, is encouraging the community to join the #StandUp community-wide campaign to help keep children safe by shining a light on mental health and addiction issues that affect us all. The goal of the campaign is to bring attention to the issues of mental and emotional health so we can intervene earlier and better ensure the health, safety, and wellness of our kids and our community. Locally, there are 46,000 youths who have a mental illness – that represents 20 percent of our youth who need help. Yet currently, it takes eight to 10 years from the onset of symptoms to the time of intervention. Suicide, homicide, and drugs and alcohol are now the leading causes of death among children and young adults ages 15 to 24. The #StandUp campaign seeks to prevent this unnecessary suffering and risk of death. We need to #StandUp for our youth – those in high school, college, or entering the workforce – who are dying prematurely in the primes of their lives largely due to preventable causes. We can and must do better. The #StandUp movement is about education, raising awareness, decreasing stigma, developing collaborations, and increasing screening and follow-up care. Together, we can #StandUp to help identify troubled children at risk and ensure easy, direct access to expert counselors.

NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2018

DLC has had a long-standing collaboration with Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) to provide mental health education, early identification, and intervention. This school year, as a result of new legislation, CCPS will receive additional funding to further increase its mental health services, education, and training. At DLC, accessing help is easy and immediate. Crisis care is available 24-7 and same-day walk-in assessments are available five days a week. DLC now has two social workers and two mental health liaisons working full-time in local schools, coordinating with teachers, coaches, and counselors to identify kids in crisis and get them help. DLC also has a clinician who works with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office to respond to and monitor threats to our schools that are suspected to have an underlying mental health concern. As we head into the 2018-19 school year, we need all of our kids, parents, and neighbors to join the movement and #StandUp to help those around them by showing compassion, understanding, and support for mental health. If we #StandUp together, we can make Collier County healthier, happier, stronger and safer – one child at a time. Visit www.StandUpDLC.org to join the movement and learn how to help shine light on mental health and addiction issues that affect us all. To seek help for yourself, friend, or community member, call 239-455-8500 or visit www.DavidLawrenceCenter.org.

here are two kinds of people who give their time to organizations they are passionate about: Those who volunteer in their free time and those who make it their life’s work. It takes both types of people to make the world a better place. Born and raised in Florida, Michelle Turchetta’s career in education and business has prepared her to champion the underserved members of our community as area director for Easterseals Florida, Inc. What is your background? After I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in exceptional education, I moved to Georgia and taught middle school students with mild-to-moderate intellectual disabilities in a small group setting. I stopped teaching when my daughter was born. Soon after starting graduate school, my inevitable divorce happened,

after which I moved back to central Florida to be closer to my family. My career took a detour during this time when I went to work for my mom, who owned a net branch of a mortgage company. I also completed my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. My mortgage career ended abruptly when the market collapsed and I went on to work in various capacities in Fort Myers, Orlando, Austin (Texas), and Naples. Every experience along the way has prepared me for my current position as the area director for Easterseals Florida, Inc. Tell us about your family. I met the love of my life in early 2007 – right before the housing market tanked. He was a single dad with custody of his two young kids. We officially became a family of five on August 2, 2008. At that time, our three kids were just 4, 5, and 7 years old. We have never

done “steps”. We are all one family; our kids just have some extra branches in their family tree! My husband, Greg Turchetta, has been the executive director of Communications and Community Engagement for Collier County Public Schools since 2014. Right now, our three kids are all teenagers attending Naples High School: Maddie is a freshman, Joey is a sophomore, and Marina is a senior. We also have two very entitled dogs and a spoiled rotten bearded dragon. Tell us about your role at Easterseals. I oversee Easterseals Academy and LEAP in Naples. Easterseals Academy in Naples prepares young people with special needs to successfully transition to post-secondary education, work and/ or a living situation that maximizes their independence for the next stage in their life. LEAP members learn important life and social skills, community-based job skills, and other unique, individualized programming. What is something that would surprise us about your work/the community you serve? Students with disabilities “age out” of school at age 22. This is a very challenging time for the students and their families. Many important decisions must be made. Parents must decide if their child’s transition will be to participate in a socialrecreation program, volunteer, hold a fulltime or part-time job, or some combination of these things. Is post-secondary education a possibility? Being a resource for families during this time is very important to us. What do you want us to know about that community? Unemployment for people with a disability is three times as high as it is for people without a disability. Creating unique opportunities in the community is an important focus for all of our programs in Naples. What is a typical day for your family? attending the same school and our oldest daughter drives! We are extremely fortunate to have “date nights” every Wednesday. What does your family like to do on the weekends when you are together? Our kids grew up boating just about every weekend. We’ve really enjoyed water sports, spotting dolphins, and going to restaurants by boat. We are often pulled in many directions and therefore often “divide and conquer” our weekends. How does working in education make both of you better parents? We are very open to talking about whatever challenges come our way. We face the same struggles and fears that other families face. Parenting is quite the journey! What are your biggest challenges right now as a mom? Walking the fine

line between holding on and letting go. I remind myself regularly that our goal has always been to raise adults – not children. We want them to grow up to be healthy, loving, and functional adults. High school is such a formative time in life, and we are really enjoying watching each of our children grow up to be unique individuals. What are your goals for this stage of your life? Maintaining a healthy worklife balance is my focus these days. And although I have no idea what it would look like, I’d like to create a business with my husband that combines our talents and interests. Best parenting advice? This quote always stands out: “Behind every great kid is a mom who is pretty sure she’s messing it all up.” neafamily.com

EDUCATION

By Esther Copeland

The Facts About Virtual School in Collier County

G

rowing up, most of us didn’t have much of a choice regarding how to learn or study. Getting an education entailed entering a brick building with a throng of other students. It was sitting down for hours amongst your peers, taking the classes you were told to, when you were told to take them. No exceptions. Today, our children have the opportunity for a public school education at home or anywhere there is a computer. School children in Collier County can take advan-

tage of either the full-time Collier Virtual School or the part-time Collier Online Virtual Education (COVE) program. “There are a variety of reasons these online courses are a great fit for students,” explained Dr. Traci Kohler, former director of professional and virtual learning for Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) and the current assistant principal at Highlands Elementary. “Some of them are full-time athletes, and may be preparing for the Olympics or have other requirements that

don’t allow for a typical day at school. Other students have familial obligations, and need to assist parents. Others want to get ahead or may have an illness that limits their mobility.” The state requires CCPS to offer several options for families. Currently, full-time options available through Collier Virtual School include: Edgenuity, Inc. (grades 6-12); K-12 Florida LLC (grades K-12); Florida Virtual School (grades K-12); and Pasco eSchool (grades K-5).

According to Kohler, the system is very fluid and simple, but effective. Students are taught the same curriculum as found in traditional public schools. Teachers, who have the same qualifications and certifications as educators in brick-and-mortar schools in Florida, offer a variety of on-demand videos, live sessions, and activities with mini tutorials. There is one-on-one time for them to connect with students. Teachers also provide office hours for parents and students conferences. What virtual school does best, according to Kohler, is use best practices to meet the individual needs of students. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and situations at home, and some are dealing with difficult issues such as mental health, social anxiety, and bullying. CCPS also offers a part-time option. In the Collier Online Virtual Education (COVE) program, courses usually are taken in addition to the regular school day, and are considered additional electives. A few of the course offering include: Driver’s Education, Math for College Success, Spanish, and Personal Fitness. It is important to note that COVE can only be taken in addition to a full-time virtual or traditional school education; it is not a substitute or alternative. Florida Virtual School The options available for virtual school can be confusing, so we asked Tania Clow, FLVS’s communications manager with Florida Virtual School (FLVS), which started in 1997, to provide additional insight in virtual schooling, and specifically FLVS. What is FLVS? Florida Virtual School is a fully accredited, statewide public school

district offering more than 150 courses to kindergarten-12th grade students. Its certified teachers use a variety of personalized instructional programs to create individualized educational plans for every student. It provides its courseware and expertise to online and blended learning programs across the nation. Since FLVS is not-a-profit venture, any funds that are received or any profits are put back into the program. This funding assists with development of new technology and better quality courses for students in Florida and elsewhere. What’s new at FLVS? We are now expanding our elementary offering. Previously, it was a full-time partnership with an academy offered only on a flex or part-time basis, due to state government restrictions. Now, full access to a variety of options are available for elementary students. We are working on building up the curriculum for elementary students. There are more courses with the FLVS curriculum available. Can virtual school students participate in extra-curricular activities? We offer over 50 clubs, from newspaper to sports. These can be taken at any zone school for virtual students, all over Florida. This also pertains to students who register as being homeschooled. Who is FLVS designed for? Students pick FLVS for myriad reasons. Some want to take classes to accelerate and get ahead, to catch up and retake classes, while others want to balance activities. There are other reasons where traditional school doesn’t work, and FLVS is a better decision. Medically home bound students find this a godsend, because they don’t have to worry about missing too many days of school, and

can go at their own speed. Teachers’ personalized one-on-one instruction is based on different levels. This means that each student has his own instructional program. Students can go at their individual pace and receive help until they fully understand concepts. What about state-mandated testing, such as the FSA? Full-time students are required to take those tests as well. They will need to go to either their zone school or another state approved location to take their tests. Can homeschool or private school students benefit from FLVS? Yes, of course. The only thing they have to keep in mind is that they will be getting a public school education. They cannot do both full-time; they will be able to use FLVS to supplement their education, but since they are not required to take the FSA or other public school tests, they will not fully qualify as a full-time student. What about students whose parent(s) are in the military? That’s the beauty of FLVS. Military students who have legal residence in Florida can count on the FLVS to have consistent education anywhere in the world for free. This helps alleviate some of their concerns of keeping up with their school work. What is the best part of FLVS? FLVS is founded on the belief that every student is unique, and we meet them where they are. FLVS offers such flexibility for students, providing them with access from smart phones, tablets, or laptops. Any time or anywhere a student is, we are open to serve their needs. 10 Reasons to Encourage Kids to Participate in Theater

P

arents know that some kids are more dramatic than others. So why not give emotionally expressive students an outlet by getting them involved in theater? You likely already know if your child has a flair for the theatrical, and educational programs can offer kids benefits that are life-changing. Opportunities to participate in fulllength theatrical productions are typically available starting in middle school. If your school district lacks funding for the arts, you won’t have to look far in your community to find regional theater companies with student programs. Opportunities outside of school include reputable community theater companies, theater education programs, and even training from seasoned professionals. Whichever path your child decides to pursue, do your homework to make sure the program provides a safe, structured environment for your budding thespian. When kids invest in drama education, it will exponentially enrich their lives in return. Theater is an excellent creative outlet for multi-talented children as well as for kids who are unsure about their abilities. Here are 10 reasons to encourage your child to participate in theater. 1. Make new friends. Any successful theatre production is fueled by a constellation of interpersonal connections. If you have a shy or socially reticent child, theater can be a great way to get them socially engaged. The all-hands-on-deck aspect of theater can quickly overcome a hesitant participant. Before kids can say “William Shakespeare,” they will find themselves an appreciated part of the team. 2. Learn collaboration. Perhaps the greatest benefit of theater is experiencing how each person’s contributions are crucial to mounting a successful show. Whether children are acting, singing, dancing, or bringing the show to life backstage, the show can only succeed with creative input from every member of the group. Collaboration is not only a helpful lesson for school; it’s also a valuable lesson for life. 3. Inspire passion. Musicals are a cool part of culture, and theater kids love learning as much as they can about Broadway, emerging actors, and the latest shows available to perform. 34

Dramatic kids may feel like they have finally found an outlet where their flair for the dramatic serves a purpose once they are acting, singing, and dancing for an audience. 4. Gain confidence. There are often limited performing arts opportunities available in schools, which is why theater can be so helpful in rounding out your child’s education. Theater pulls kids out of themselves and gets them involved in something greater than themselves in ways that engage their minds, bodies, and emotions. The more kids perform, the bigger the confidence boost, which can carry over into the rest of their school experience. 5. Increase emotional intelligence. My daughter’s theater camp director always calls theater “empathy training.” There is nothing like walking in another person’s shoes, saying their words, and imaging their thoughts and point of view to build thoughtfulness in kids. In a world where intolerance seems to be on the rise, empathy training seems like a crucial skill. 6. Appreciate culture. You might be surprised to learn how few high school students have been to a play or a musical. If you want your child to have a more cultured childhood than you did, attending shows is a great way to experience new worlds within driving distance. School theater groups often take field trips to see shows and may even participate in talk-backs with the actors afterwards. 7. Build community. There are few school activities that engage the extended community the way theater does. Parent and family members attend school shows, and so do community members, business owners, and school administrators. Having a flourishing theater program in local schools can be a pride point for parents, the school district, and the community at large. 8. Experience contagious enthusiasm. If you have never witnessed the passion theater kids have for bonding with each other as they mount a show, you and your child are in for a treat. For kids experiencing challenges at home, the theater can become a secure home away from home. Ask any child who has just moved to a new school or who is trying to navigate a parents’ divorce if they would like to join a community of immersive learners, and they might be willing to try it. 9. Improve communication skills. At some point, most students need to impress a college admissions board or employer. Theater can increase a student’s chances of scoring a spot since it boosts both verbal and nonverbal communication skills, not to mention auditioning practice. Theater kids can even use imagination, observation, and listening skills to determine the right choices for their future. Parents might want to consider ways theater skills like articulation, vocal projection, and emotional expression can help students ace future school and job interviews. 10. Enjoy school more. Theater people are generally more diverse, tolerant, and inclusive than most. Compelling acting requires gesturing and projecting the voice to bring words on the page to life. If your child is having trouble fitting in or struggling to keep grades up, encourage him to go see what’s happening in the performing arts hall. Theater can become a great motivator for kids to increase school attendance, keep their grades up, and make memories that last a lifetime. CHRISTINA KATZ is a journalist whose husband is a high school theater teacher for over a decade. She has seen more high school plays and musicals than she can count, and especially enjoys watching her daughter perform. NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2018

Are Music Lessons Worth the Cost?

D

oes your child love to sing? Love plunking on the piano or pounding on the drum? Do you think you might have a future musician in your home? The average cost of private music lessons ranges from $15-40 per half hour (www.takelessons. com). Keep in mind the cost will vary depending on location and the expertise of teacher. With these numbers, private lessons cost parents $1,000 to $2,000 a year. This may make you wonder, are music lessons really worth it? Let’s look at some short and long term benefits of music lessons. Discipline. Learning to play beautiful music doesn’t happen overnight. All students must start from the beginning, playing scales and mastering basic skills. In our society instant gratification is the norm. Music teaches the value of patience and discipline because children must set aside time for practice and make it part of their routine in order to further their skills. Work ethic. Music teaches children a good work ethic because they see the value of practice as they improve and reach new achievements. Students will learn how dedication creates good results, while failing to do all the necessary practice results in mediocre results. These lessons carry into school studies and future employment. Memory. Is your child always forgetting things? Music requires kids to practice memorization. Even if sheet music is used, students memorize how to play each note and the sheet music eventually becomes a guide. Students can use their developing memorization skills in a variety of ways in school and at home. Math and language skills. Music helps develop math and language skills that gives kids an edge in school. “Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language

and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music,” according to the National Association for Music Education. Teamwork. Teamwork isn’t just for sports. Music students may have an opportunity to participate in a band or orchestra. This provides kids experience working as a team and a sense of camaraderie. Teamwork develops social skills that they will use for a lifetime. Confidence and social development. Kids will gain confidence as they begin to perform music for an audience. This helps kids learn to face their fears and builds self esteem. As kids build up this confidence, they are more likely to boost their communication skills and have increased social development. Lifelong challenge. In music, there is always room for improvement. This creates the opportunity for students of any age to improve and challenge themselves for many years to come. Stress relief. Playing an instrument can be an outlet for kids. Music can be relaxing and a form of stress relief, as well as a way to express yourself creatively. Kids who have this outlet are less likely to find negative ways to relieve stress, like drugs and alcohol. Expression and creativity. Kids who play music are trained to think creatively. The ability to think outside of the box in many other situations is a coveted asset among many employers. Improved coordination. Kids who play instruments develop their hand-eye coordination. Just like in sports, playing an instrument requires these skills and develops their motor skills. Higher test scores. Studies show that children who are exposed to music education have higher SAT scores and better grades in school overall, according to the Children’s Music Workshop. Introduces children to other cultures. Through music kids are NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2018

Finding the Money Paying for music lessons and buying an instrument for your children can be difficult or even impossible for many families. Fortunately, there are organizations in Naples that will help foot the bill. Collier County Public Schools Music is accessible to all students, through a wonderful program in the middle schools in CCPS. Stringed instruments – violin, viola, cello, and bass – are provided free for one year to any student who takes orchestra in middle school. Students receive instruction on the instrument during orchestra class. It’s a costeffective way for your child to try an instrument for a year before you make the financial commitment. And your budding musician may qualify for scholarships that fund private lessons (see below). The Music Foundation of Greater Naples (formerly Naples Music Club) The Music Foundation of Greater Naples (MFGN), formerly the Naples Music Club, has a wide range of programs that provide assistance to music students, from beginner to advanced. Its scholarship program recognizes the achievements of the area’s best youth musicians. Awards are used for summer music camp, private music lessons, instrument upgrades, or college tuition. Through its Outreach Programs, the MFGN also provides funding for private lessons for promising students who have never studied privately. Visit www.naplesmusicclub.org. Naples Concert Band Naples Concert Band has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to its student members. The awards are intended to pay for lessons, music camps, or to purchase an instrument. Students must play at least four concerts and participate in related rehearsals to be considered for a scholarship. Visit www. naplesconcertband.org or call 239-270-1221. Music for Minors Foundation, Inc. Each year, Music For Minors contacts teachers in Collier and Lee Counties to nominate deserving students in the music programs at their schools. The students and their parents are interviewed to determine if they fit the criteria to be awarded an instrument. Eleven students were selected in 2017. If the student remains in good standing in the program for three years, the instrument is theirs to keep. To date, Music For Minors has awarded close to 300 instruments, and hopes to eventually provide private lessons to the students in the program. Visit www.music4minors.org or call 239-273-2250. exposed to other cultures, teaching them awareness and empathy for others. This helps them become more accepting of other cultures at an early age. My daughter recently started taking piano lessons. As I sat in the room observing her first lesson, I witnessed something. As she played her first chord, a smile spread across her face. It was clear she has a true love for music. To me, this makes the cost of lessons worth it. Each family will have to weigh the overall price of music lessons against their child’s enjoyment of music and the many benefits to make a decision whether music lessons are truly worth the cost. he sweet interaction between a mother and her baby when she sings to the infant is a universal behavior. And researchers now know that this simple, most natural activity is mutually beneficial to both mother and child. Singing provides the sensory stimu-

lation that helps baby to focus attention, enabling learning, and the mother feels empowered as she creates a positive bond with her baby. Benefits of musical experiences But studies are showing that a broad

array of musical experiences can build connections in the brains of young children aged 0-6 and that these connections are vitally important for all kinds of later learning. Incorporating music into the fabric of your daily family life can bring social and educational benefits to your

children in surprising ways. • Soft music can calm and soothe children, from fussy babies to high-strung older children, serving as a stress-reducer. • Music can help children focus attention, a necessary skill in any learning process. • Hearing music and responding to it accelerates brain development, especially in language acquisition and reading and math skills. • Music provides healthy ways to interact with others, both adults and peers. • Moving to music builds motor skills and allows healthy self-expression. • Music interactions build memory skills. • Music provides a vehicle for the expression of many emotions, especially joy. Early brain development Neuroscientists now believe that crucial brain development takes place in the early years between ages 0-6. These years offer a window of opportunity to build connections in the brain that will serve the child throughout a lifetime. New connections are made in the brain based on what the child sees, hears, and touches. Music is a key way to introduce new learning experiences to your child in both fun and productive ways. We now know that children who engage in musical activities from birth to age six have a head start on social competence, cognitive skills and emotional well-being. Besides, music is fun! Games and activities Here are some games and activities to bring more music into the culture of

your family life: • Play music for babies and toddlers. Encourage them to sway, bounce, clap, and otherwise respond to the rhythms. • Make up songs as you go about your daily routines. They might relate to bath or nap times, meal times or play times. “It’s time for your bath, bath, bath” to the tune of a favorite song. • Sing familiar songs and insert silly words. “Mary had a little ____.” • Play music and provide household items or simple rhythm instruments for your children to play. • Learn songs to sing together as a family. These work wonders during commute times in the car. • Sing “movement” songs to build simple dance routines. “Wiggle, hop, and turn around.” Have fun with music because “In the first six years of life, a child’s brain

develops more and faster than at any other time in life. The early experiences a child has – the things seen, heard, and touched – stimulate the brain, forming connections. Healthy brain development establishes a child’s social competence, cognitive skills, and positive emotional well-being,” according to clinical psychologist Seema Hingorrany. Let music of all kinds form a backdrop to your daily family life. Have some musical fun with your kids and build their brainpower. SCOUTING

E

By Anna Futrell

The Benefits of Scouting

ven if you never were a Girl Scout or Boy Scout, you may be aware of the benefits of Scouting for your child: learning new skills, developing leadership qualities, access to ridiculously addictive cookies. But have you considered that scouting also could help your child get into college? “Sticking with scouting: it shows that you’ve got just what schools are looking for: determination, grit, and commitment,” said Amy Feins, a local college prep consultant. “You have to do projects and work as a team – these qualities are what get you noticed.” Feins noted that sports may not make applicants stand out to admissions officers as much as scouting does. “Injuries or the cost of private training and club sports may not take you across that finish line, despite years of playing on a team,” she explained. “If you are in scouting, stay there,” Feins advised. “You’ll gain great skills and I’m telling you, having that Eagle Scout [or Girl Scout Gold Award] designation on your resume (and activities list) will take you much farther than varsity/club soccer ever could.” Still, if you are considering having your child join a troop this fall, college likely is many years away, and you have more immediate concerns about selecting your child’s activities. We spoke with representatives from both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Collier County to help you decide if scouting is right for your family. Boy Scouts of Southwest Florida James Giles is Southwest Florida’s district executive for the Boy Scouts of America and oversees the area’s Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Soon, the organization will experience a name change (Scouts BSA) and form single gender troops, providing opportunities for boys and girls to reap the benefits of scouting. Cub Scouts packs are for youth in Collier County in kindergarten through fifth grade, and Boy Scouts troops are for boys in grades 6-12. Venturing – also through Boy Scouts of America – is a high adventure co-ed program for students 14-20 years of age.

44

neafamily.com

“Participants engage in fun outdoor activities, and they learn so many skills,” Giles explained. “Students build relationships and make lifelong friends as they engage in all sorts of activities and sports.” He added that children join Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts “for the fun! That’s why they stay, too. Parents love that their children build character and develop an ethical and moral framework for making decisions.” Families starting out in Cub Scouts can expect meetings once a week for an hour and optional camping trips four to five times per year. As students continue on in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, they may work towards more advanced badges and ranks. “The whole family is welcome to attend meetings,” Giles said. “We’ve been offering family camping opportunities in Collier County for over 30 years, and our organization seeks to accommodate older and younger siblings as well – both in meetings and on trips.” Julian Vallejo is a local example of a Boy Scout success story. An Eagle Scout from Immokalee, this 22-year-old studied culinary arts and currently is a sous chef for a catering company in Naples. “I first joined Boy Scouts in 2012 at the age of 14,” Vallejo said. “Over the next four years, I moved up in rank and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Boy Scouts. I grew so much personally, and I developed the characteristics put forth in Boy Scouts – to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” Scouting helped Vallejo get on and stay on the right path. “When I was younger, I used to get into a lot of trouble. I didn’t have the best examples,” he explained. “But after joining the Boy Scouts, that all changed. I learned to treat others with kindness and respect, to stay calm, and to think rationally. I also learned to overcome my shyness, and now I am able to speak in front of large crowds without any issue.” Even years after becoming an Eagle Scout, his experiences as a NEAPOLITANfamily • September 2018

scout continue to have a positive impact on his life. “It opened so many doors for me,” he said. “Because I am an Eagle Scout, people know they can trust me and rely on me. Getting a job has been easy for me because employers know the character of a Boy Scout. I have been able to move up in my career thanks to the teachings of the Boy Scouts.” To learn more about Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, attend one of the community-wide recruitment nights at all public elementary schools in Collier County on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m., or visit beascout.scouting.org. Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Since the first troop met in Everglades City in 1927, girls in Collier County in kindergarten through 12th grade have had the opportunity to experience all that Girl Scouts offers. Girls earn badges, learn skills, and make friends during troop meetings that take place every one-to-two weeks for about an hour. Girls also are encouraged to participate in travel and adventure opportunities, along with special events regularly offered throughout the region. Why choose Girl Scouts for your daughters? “Quite simply, Girl Scouts is the best leadership experience for girls in the world. Camping, adventure seeking, and exploring the outdoors are all cornerstone experiences girls have in Girl Scouting,” said Mary Anne Servian, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida (GSGCF). “Girls can participate in STEAM activities, earning badges in robotics, cybersecurity, and space science,” she added. “They can take on a one-hundred-foot climbing wall. They can go on urban backpacking expeditions. And they still enjoy the cherished traditions, such as friendship circles, campfire songs, earning legacy badges, and learning entrepreneurial skills through the iconic Cookie Program.” The benefits of Girl Scouts extend beyond the years a girl spends in the program. “We know that Girl Scouting works,” said Dawn Pike, community specialist with GSGCF. “Years of research shows how Girl Scouts outperform non-Girl Scouts in key areas like positive relationship development, seeking healthy challenges, community problem solving, and developing a strong sense of self. Girls today are facing a whole new set of challenges in life, and we’re helping them to empower themselves. It’s still about fun, friendship, sisterhood, and supporting one another – in an all-girl, girl-led environment.” A key component of the Girl Scouts program is serving the

community. “At its core, Girl Scouting is about preparing girls to be leaders,” Pike said. “We believe that encouraging a sense of responsibility for the greater good is one of the most important facets of effective leadership.” Girl Scouts’ achievement culminates with the Girl Scout Gold Award, open only to high school participants. “It encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. Gold Award Girl Scouts are an elite group of women who embody community leadership and leave behind a sustainable legacy,” Servian said. This year in Collier County, four Girl Scouts – who grew up together in the same troop – received the Gold Award. The four young women who put in an enormous amount of effort to achieve this designation are Valentina Zuluaga, Madison Weeks, Emily Hugan, and Erika Miller. Zuluaga recently graduated from Mason Classical Academy and is attending the University of Richmond in the fall. “I joined Girl Scouts in sixth grade and participated throughout my high school career. During these years, my troop raised money through cookie sales, completed community projects, and earned a variety of badges. We went on group trips and ultimately supported each other in the completion of our Gold Awards this past school year.” Working on badges and special events together with her troop is Zuluaga’s favorite part of being a Girl Scout. “One of my favorite events was Thinking Day, where each troop would pick a country and make a presentation of the country and its culture. We took turns presenting our troop’s country, and we learned about the other countries.” Zuluaga encourages girls thinking about joining a troop to consider all of the benefits that come from being a Girl Scout. “Girl Scouts is a great opportunity to put your mind and efforts toward something outside of yourself while spending time with great friends,” she said. “It’s a confidence builder, especially when you get to see and experience all your efforts come together toward your final goal. I loved my time in Girl Scouts – all the memories I made and lessons I learned through the program!” To learn more about Girl Scouts, visit www.gsgcf.org. There will be recruiting events at elementary schools in Collier County starting this month. Check out Neapolitan Family’s calendar starting on page 26 for locations and dates.
