It’s been a challenging few weeks for everyone in Southwest Florida. Hurricane Irma hit us square in the mouth, and we’ve all faced a multitude of challenges, both personally and professionally, in her wake. Neapolitan Family went to press a week late, but we are thrilled to be publishing our October issue, and are excited that you have picked up a copy to enjoy, hopefully while enjoying cherished air conditioning! We all now have our Irma stories. Mine involves northern Alabama, too many Waffle House visits, and never, ever (ever) trusting hotels.com again. On page 8, Kamela Patton, superintendent of Collier County Public Schools, details the dedication and effort of hundreds of CCPS employees who turned our schools into shelters that gave refugee to thousands during and after the storm. Turn to page 18 to read about how Karen T. Bartlett’s turned her evacuation to Atlanta into an opportunity to explore that city with her daughter. Photographs from both our readers (pages 12-13) and photographer Lisette Morales (pages 16-17) tell a multitude of heart-warming tales about how our community banded together to help each other recover, from cleaning up debris to distributing food and water to playing the ukulele in the parking lot at Home Depot. On page 21, a physician guides us in preparing for our kids’ medical needs during a hurricane, and what to look for afterward. In the silver-lining vein, writer Ann Snyder provides practical advice on page 22 on turning your Irma-damaged backyard into a vegetable garden. But we can’t forget about Halloween. If Irma-related expenses have slashed your Halloween costume budget, you’ll find lots of ideas on page 37 on how to get great costumes for your kids at bargain prices. And don’t forget to check out our annual list of fall festivals, Halloween events, and haunted houses. Hurricane Irma: The Inside Story

want to personally tell you the story of Hurricane Irma from within Collier County Public Schools (CCPS). We began storm preparations with 10 schools ready to provide shelter for evacuees. Irma’s forecast track had her heading for the east coast. However, as Irma changed direction and headed right for Collier, the storm surge predictions became dire and the evacuation zones expanded. We quickly opened 29 schools as storm shelters, housing 17,000 guests. That was 100% of available schools! Here’s the breakdown: • 29 (54%) schools were opened. • 20 (40%) schools were unable to be opened as they were within the projected storm surge area. • 3 (6%) schools were unable to be opened due to wastewater treatment plant (septic – if electricity went out, we would be unable to use bathrooms). • Prior to Hurricane Irma, CCPS had never opened more than 10 schools as shelters. This is a 190% increase of opened shelters! For the first time, CCPS opened its doors to being pet shelters for dogs, cats, and even birds. All were opened within 30 hours! This required a sudden and mass effort from all CCPS departments, school-based administrators, and volunteers to get these shelters activated and keep them operational for several days. Most of these shelters had evacuees and some even housed law enforcement helping to ready our community. For example, we had various agencies staying at Oakridge Middle School and Cypress Palm Middle, such as Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Fish and Wildlife. Barron Collier High was a staging area for all incoming resources. The National Guard took up residence at Gulf Coast High School and were responsible for feeding stations throughout the county. 8

We had our challenges. For example, Palmetto Ridge High School, functioning as a special needs shelter for 240 residents, lost its air conditioning. The county was waiting on a part to be flown

in, and it did not arrive. Collier County Emergency Management sent 10 indoor air conditioning units. The person needed to assemble these air conditioners did not arrive. Therefore, the principal, assistant principal, and facility manager together got all 10 units up and running. We might have some new engineering teachers. I am very proud of our people doing “whatever” it takes!!! In some shelters, water mains broke, causing low water pressure. Due to power failure, the lift stations failed, causing sewage back up into the school. The cavalry came to the rescue, and port-a-potties were deployed in the morning. I had the opportunity to personally witness it all as I visited 16 shelters and the County Emergency Operations Center.

The most important part to remember about Hurricane Irma is how CCPS staff and volunteers came together and made our guests feel special and worked to calm those who were so worried. Our staff had activities and movies for kids, we offered cell phone charging stations, and some shelters even barbecued for guests – again going above and beyond to make people as comfortable as possible. One positive memory occurred at Gulf Coast High School. The school’s flag was stuck at the top of the flagpole before the storm and staff tried but could not get the flag down. Needless to say, the flag flew away in the storm. The National Guard saw what had happened, and performed an entire flag-raising ceremony with the principal’s new flag! Guests were all very touched as they watched. Here is one of many compliments to our staff. “I want to thank you so much for opening Veterans Memorial Elementary as a shelter for county employees. Mrs. Franklin and her staff were wonderful under the stress of the hurricane and I always felt safe and informed. My children never showed any fear because the staff were so calm and collected at all times. This includes the cooking staff, cleaning and maintenance staff, teachers, and the Parks and Recreation employees. My family and I are ever grateful.” On this page is a picture of another thank you note, for Immokalee Middle School from the Florida National Guard. This is just a small sample of the efforts during this storm. Our work was essential to keeping Collier residents safe and getting Collier County back up and running. When the schools are settled, so is the community. I want to personally thank the hundreds of dedicated Collier County Public School staff and volunteers who stood tall when our community needed a safe place to stay! We are #CCPSStrong! s soon as power and water were restored to Robert of Philadelphia Hair Salon, owners and siblings Robert DiLella and Tracey DiLella knew they had something great thing to offer. They invited anyone in need of clean hair to come in to their Bayfront location for a complimentary shampoo and blow dry. Clients were offered a cool respite from their powerless homes and hurricane recovery with cold water, a place to charge their phones, and someone to share their Irma story with. Yvonne Parry showed up for her scheduled appointment surprised and amazed by the what was happening at the salon. “While getting our hair done we could hear each other’s story. It was a very scary time for all of us. Everyone was overwhelmed and exhausted,”

she reflected. “The atmosphere was a combination of somber reflection and appreciation to be in an air-conditioned place and getting just a little bit of pampering.” The week after Hurricane Irma hit, DiLella estimates they donated their services to over 250 people. Overwhelmed by the hugs and the tears shared among stylists and clients, the DiLellas have decided to continue this free service as long as the people in Collier County need it. Naples Zoo to Reopen Oct. 14; Boo at the Zoo to Run Oct. 20-22

fter suffering significant damage from Hurricane Irma, the Naples Zoo has announced a reopening date of Saturday, Oct. 14, thanks to efforts from staff and volunteers, including crews from a number of zoos across the country. To welcome the community back into the zoo and historic gardens, admission will be free that weekend for Collier County residents and just $5 for all other Florida residents. Currently, donations for recovery efforts are being accepted at www.napleszoo.org/give. “With the support we have been shown, our staff felt strongly that we wanted to give back to the community with this weekend,”

said Jack Mulvena, Naples Zoo president and CEO. While donations can help rebuild exhibits and structures in weeks or months, the winds of Hurricane Irma removed decades of growth inside the botanical garden in just a few hours – including two nearly century-old specimens planted by gardens founder Dr. Henry Nehrling. The zoo’s horticulture team alongside multiple crews of arborists from The Davey Tree Expert Company is on-site conducting extensive tree care. Recovery has been expedited by a tremendous team effort between staff and volunteers – and even crews coming from as far away as Kansas City Zoo, Oklahoma City Zoo, Sedgwick County Zoo, St. Louis Zoo, and Topeka Zoo. These efforts, plus donations, have enabled the zoo to open in about the same amount of time as that following Hurricane Wilma in 2005, even though the damage was more severe with Hurricane Irma. This means that Boo at the Zoo event will run as planned, Friday, Oct. 20 through Sunday, Oct. 22. This annual family event that has become a tradition in Naples will start daily at 10 a.m. daily and end at 3 p.m. Activities include trick-or-treating, education stations, a game garden, a costume contest with prizes and a DJ. The costume contest will take place each day at 1 p.m. with three categories for everyone to participate. As always, guests can enjoy watching rare animals going wild “carving” pumpkins and other treats with tooth, horn, and claw. All the fun is included in regular zoo admission. Children 12 and younger in costume will receive free admission. For this family-friendly event, only adults accompanied by children are permitted in costume. How You Can Help After Irma

s Hurricane Irma set her sights on Collier County back in September, we at the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) watched as an even stronger force rose to meet her. Neighbors helped install hurricane shutters. Friends welcomed strangers to weather the storm in safe places. We wished each other good luck and safety and checked in whenever possible. And folks banded together in the aftermath of the storm to donate food and water to those in need. They grabbed chainsaws and cleared neighbors’ driveways and opened their homes so those without power or water could get some relief. Our first responders pulled long shifts to keep the roadways and our property safe. County employees labored on weekends and overnight to ensure we had safe drinking water and hot meals. Utility crews restored power at break neck speed. We are prouder than ever to be #CollierStrong. But the work is far from over. Hurricane Irma wreaked widespread and significant damage. The storm destroyed homes and sent flood waters rushing into others, ruining personal possessions, spreading mold, and making some places unlivable. Families face months of recovery and mounting expenses for repairs and cleanup. And as you know, some of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Irma, places such

as Immokalee and Everglades City, were already hard pressed to make ends meet. So what can we do to help? How can we continue to display that communal strength we showed in the immediate aftermath? The following is by no means a comprehensive list of ways to share of your time and resources, but it’s a start. And there’s no better way to pass on the importance of

If you want to help, you can: • Contribute to the new Collier Comes Together Disaster Relief Fund through the Community Foundation of Collier County, which has teamed up with the CCSO and other local law enforcement agencies • Sign up at VolunteerFlorida.org to be dispatched to help in local relief efforts. • Donate or spend time helping Habitat for Humanity of Collier County rebuild its homes. • Volunteer at a local nursing home, where residents were shaken up and displaced during the storm. • Send food through Meals of Hope with a donation. • Help the American Red Cross provide food, shelter, and comfort with a donation. • Ask your place of worship how it is helping, and volunteer with other members. And if you don’t have time or money to lend, we’re sure you have a well of kindness you can share. Smile more. Ask your co-workers how they’re doing – and mean it. Let someone cut in line at the grocery store or offer to watch a friend’s children while they make repairs to their home or just get away for the evening. Is Estate Planning Part of Your Disaster Readiness Kit?

s an estate planning attorney, it’s my job to prepare people for the unthinkable. I help my clients ensure that if something happens to them, their affairs will be in order and their children will be cared for the way they want, by the people they want, no matter what. Simply put, it’s my job to give people peace of mind. Despite that, I could not give myself peace of mind in the wake of Irma. I was totally unprepared to deal with a hurricane. As of Wednesday before the storm hit, I had no storm shutters, no bottled water, and not even a working flashlight. In a panic, my husband rushed to the hardware store for supplies while I spent the morning frantically planning our evacuation vacation. After several trips to three different hardware stores and waiting in line for hours for plywood and gas, we somehow managed to board up the house and pack our clothes and important belongings. Like thieves in the night, we stole our kids from their beds and made our way to Tennessee hours before the light of dawn on Thursday. During that very long drive, it occurred to me that our lastminute scrambling wasn’t all that different from what I have seen so many families go through after the death of a loved one. Too often, grieving families are left scouring the house to find a will, accounts, bills, anything – all while having to make funeral arrangements and entertain out-of- town guests. And to make matters worse, when a family is faced with no estate plan in place, they simply don’t know where to begin. Death is an ugly, messy business. If you want to make things as easy as possible for your family in the event something happens to you, then you need to have an estate plan. Dealing with a storm like Hurricane Irma gives us pause to reflect on our lives, families, and safety plans, and is an opportunity to think not only about storm preparation but also how those preparations relate to estate planning. Your safety plan should include estate planning – the ultimate form of disaster readiness – because it spells out exactly what will happen if you die or become incapacitated. Your estate plan contains several documents to help you. • If you become injured and cannot make your own decisions, your durable power of attorney, living will, and health care directives provide instructions on how to deal with your finances and medical care, and name agents who will carry out those instructions on your behalf. • Your Last Will and Testament dictates how your property and assets will be distributed upon your death. A will, however, will not keep your family out of probate court. This is why many people choose to also include a Living Revocable Trust in their estate plan. A trust is the best way to avoid the expensive, long, and public probate process. • Finally, if you have minor children, your plan will specify who will care for your children, who will manage their inheritance until they are old enough to manage it themselves, and other important decisions pertaining to them.

Once you have an estate plan in place, make sure you put it, along with all of your other important documents, in a fireproof safe and preferably in a waterproof container. Other important documents should consist of your insurance policies, birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports, property deeds, car titles, banking and other asset information, and tax records. Also be sure to make copies and scan documents to your hard drive. While people sometimes choose to keep important documents in a safe deposit box, it is not a good place to keep a will. This is because upon your death, an original will must be produced in court. Freelance photographer and community activist Lisette Morales felt fortunate to have power and little damage from Hurricane Irma, so she set out to follow area relief volunteers in Immokalee, Everglades City, Goodland, and Bonita Springs, to document the story that will undoubtedly become part of the fabric of Collier County history. At times, the destruction and devastation was so overwhelming that she could only take photos of the aftermath, and not the faces of those in the midst of their own personal crisis. A few Collier County citizens did agree to be photographed, in the hopes that it would bring more recognition to the plight of those who had lost so much. “As a photographer, I don’t believe for a second that I took those photos,” Lisette commented. “Rather, the people gave these photos to me, by showing their true and raw selves in one of the most challenging and humbling moments of their lives.”

The Accidental Tourist: Evacuation to Atlanta

en days ago I had a schedule and responsibilities and bills to pay. I had a writing assignment and a photo shoot that would help pay those bills. Instead, I found myself running up large American Express charges at Home Depot, stuffing bins, and cramming them into closets and hallways. My priorities changed, and like several thousand other Neapolitans, I became an accidental tourist. This is my Irma story. For more than a week, my only daughter has been begging me to be rational and drive to Atlanta. Her first messages went something like this: “Dear Mom, why don’t you come to Atlanta? It will be fun.” Her last messages were more like, “MOM! Get in the car and start driving now!” By the time I recognize her wisdom, it’s two days till bulls-eye. Now I’m facing a 20-hour crawl up I-75 with the specter of running out of gas on a dark highway. The only flights to Atlanta have outrageously inflated price tags. So despite Sarah’s pleas, I’ll hunker down with my significant other and his family and ride out whatever is to come. But my guardian angel intervenes, in the form of the worst nightmare of my

life. In the dream, which wasn’t about a hurricane but is too horrifying to describe, I’m screaming at my precious child, “Get out! Get out!” But in the dream, it’s too late. So at 3 a.m. I’m wide awake with my heart pounding out of control. In the dark, I stumble around stacked up, plasticcovered furniture to find my laptop and surf the airlines. Of course I knew what I’d find, but what else can I do at 3 a.m.? Sold out Scrolling Delta, every line on every page contains two words: SOLD OUT. Then American: SOLD OUT. SOLD OUT. SOLD OUT. And then Southwest. By this time I’m scrolling with glazed eyes through the SOLD OUTs when a single line – one single aisle seat – does not show the two dreaded words. Plus, it’s bargainpriced at $113. With the nightmare still in my head, I stare at that spot transfixed, expecting it to disappear. It doesn’t. I sprint for my beleaguered American Express card, and 150 minutes after sunrise, I’m at Gate 5, Terminal B, waiting to board one of the last flights out of RSW before the airport shuts down. It’s not until my daughter enfolds me

in a long hug in the arrivals lane that I learn the chilling rest of the story: she also had wakened from a nightmare around 3 a.m. She was screaming “MOM! MOM!” Two toothbrushes and three pairs of jeans So now I’m unpacking my carry-on. Here’s what I find: four summer t-shirts (it’s autumn here), some underwear, my passport and birth certificate (Really? My birth certificate?), and a rain jacket. Also, my laptop (no power cord), my phone (no charger), one Kindle, and three identical Kindle power cords that do not fit the computer or the phone. Also, two toothbrushes, two oversize vanity mirrors, and three (yes, three) pairs of jeans. I honestly can’t imagine how thousands of evacuating moms in Irma panic mode managed to pack rationally – not just for themselves, but also for a variety of kids, dogs, cats, partners, and elders. But I’m safe and there’s electricity here. Sarah and Mike have made me a cozy nest. Pediatric Care After a Hurricane

fter a severe storm or hurricane, there are common pediatric complaints seen in emergency departments as a result of the weather experienced. Children with seasonal and environmental allergies may have acute allergy symptoms, sometimes severe, and children with asthma/reactive airway disease can have attacks of wheezing and trouble breathing. This is due to high winds that can cause unusual types and amounts of pollen and other allergens to be in the air and deposited on surfaces. In addition, flooding can cause the proliferation of mold, which can be highly allergenic (causing allergy symptoms). Children with allergies and asthma who are on daily medications to prevent allergy symptoms (such as loratidine, cetirazine, montelukast or inhaled oral/nasal steroids) should continue those medications and those who are not taking them might benefit from starting them after a storm. Children assisting with post-storm clean-up around the home can be exposed to allergens through contact with plant/tree debris and contaminated surfaces. Children with severe allergies or asthma should not participate in these activities or should wear masks while assisting other family members. Some children are dependent upon powered nebulizer machines to treat their asthma/reactive airway disease. Unfortunately, loss of power is a common problem during and after storms. Albuterol, the medication used for acute wheezing and wheezy cough, can be given quite effectively to even very young children using a metered dose inhaler and spacer chamber with a mask or mouthpiece. This equipment does not need power and is very portable easy to use. Ask your primary care provider about obtaining an albuterol inhaler and spacer chamber if your child uses albuterol via nebulizer. In communities severely affected by a storm, pharmacies may not be open or easily accessible for days to weeks. Part of a family’s hurricane preparations, both before the season starts and when a storm is forecasted to possibly affect their area, should include ensuring all family members have a sufficient supply of their prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to last for

two weeks after a storm. In the state of Florida, the law requires that insurance companies approve and pay for early refills on prescription medications when the patient’s county of residence is under a hurricane warning and the governor has designated the county/state is in a state of emergency. This applies only when the prescription has refills available. It is best NOT to wait until your area is under a hurricane warning to get additional medications but the law can help if necessary. Post-storm pediatric illness and injury is predictable, and by being prepared, we can enhance the level of medical care available to children after a storm. DR. It’s Time to Create a Family Vegetable Garden In Your Backyard

urricane Irma left our yards and landscaping in tatters, but the silver lining of this mess is we now have an opportunity to start fresh, and finally build out that space in our backyard for an edible garden. What can an edible garden in Southwest Florida include? Our growing season typically runs from September/October to April/ May. Edible gardens may include fruit trees such as Florida avocados, citrus, mango, and papaya trees. Additionally, the vast amount of sunshine we receive during the growing season lends itself to tomato production, leafy greens, herbs, and many other types of vegetables. Edible landscaping For some advice about how, exactly, to begin an edible garden, I turned to a few local experts. Erica Klopf, owner of Florida Edible Landscaping, a landscaping business dedicated to building sustainable, edible gardens in Southwest Florida, shared some valuable information with me. Born and raised in Naples, Erica attended FGCU and holds degrees in Art and Environmental Studies. I asked her why her landscaping designs focused on food. “Families should grow food because it is practical. When we grow food, we take responsibility for the health of our property and family. What limits us as a region is the lack of knowledge on how and what to grow. The future, though, is locally grown, and our children will realize this.” Klopf offered advice on how families can take the first step in edible gardening. “A simple way to get started is to stop by Food and Thought and look at what seedlings they have to offer. I’ve

had great success growing their plants, and it’s one of the only local sources for organic seedlings that are appropriate to our seasons and climate. Their staff can help you get all the materials you need, such as compost, fertilizer, and foliar sprays. They also stock perennial fruit trees and herbs, which will also thrive in your home garden.” Many families are overwhelmed by the thought of planting and maintaining a vegetable garden. “The critical move when starting a garden is to start small,” Klopf said. “The power move when starting a garden is a simple irrigation system.” She suggested a timer hooked up to the hose and connected to a drip line. She also recommended using vegetable fertilizer as well as mulch. “Before you plant the seedling, mix a handful of organic vegetable fertilizer into the soil. Make sure to put 2-4 inches of mulch throughout the whole garden.” Klopf encouraged gardeners to prune their vegetables and plants. “Pull off all damaged leaves once a week. Pulling damaged leaves will encourage your plants to grow quickly, the same way trimming your nails or hair encourages healthy growth.” Harvest Bee Farm I also received some helpful advice on gardening from Kenneth Alaimo, lead farmer at Harvest Bee Farm. This 2 ½ acre bio-dynamic farm is located near the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Logan Boulevard. Fall 2017 marks the farm’s third growing season. “We started off as a simple garden, and we’ve expanded to a larger farm,” Alaimo explained. “We grow market produce, including seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs. We also provide farm-fresh eggs, tea blends, and honey.” NEAPOLITANfamily • October 2017

I asked Alaimo what he enjoys about farming, and why he would encourage families to grow their own food. “Growing and sharing food allows me to express love and positivity in a new way,” he said. “We have a small community of people for whom we grow food, and it brings me so much joy. I want families in Southwest Florida to experience this joy.” As for the benefits of backyard vegetable gardens, “It’s easy to produce higher quality food when you grow it yourself on a small scale; this is what we’re trying to do at the farm as well. Families have complete control of how their food is grown and produced,” he said. Alaimo shared some suggestions for aspiring vegetable gardeners. “Choose higher areas on your property, if possible. And if your neighbor utilizes fertilizers or sprays, try to choose an area far away from the property line.” Alaimo recommended that families keep it simple and just get started. “Use flower pots, build a raised bed, or tear up a section of grass in your yard. Put compost and mulch directly in the ground – whatever it takes to get started.” Start small, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. “Banana trees grow really well, and so do mango trees,” he said. “Start with a few herbs in pots, and consider composting kitchen scraps.” And for those families who want to have a vegetable garden but don’t have the inclination or space, Alaimo encourages participation in a CSA (community sponsored agriculture). “A CSA allows families to partner with a local farm,” he said. “They essentially buy stock up front in the farm and receive a share of the growing season, thereby participating in weekly production. Each week, families pick up a box of vegetables from the farm. Variety changes, and they typically receive a discount on the food based on what it would have cost to purchase the vegetables on a weekly basis.” Alaimo participates in the Sunday Farmer’s Market on the Southeast corner of Livingston and Pine Ridge Roads and loves to answer any and all questions backyard vegetable gardeners may have. He also offers Southwest Florida families the opportunity to participate in the Harvest Bee Farm CSA for $375 for the season (box pick-up weekly from December through the first week of May).

We love spending time outdoors as a family and are able to save money on produce by growing our own food.” Both Gabe and Emily have worked on farms extensively during their adult lives. Emily has spent time in a few different farming environments. “I had the opportunity to go ‘WWOOFing’ (Willing Workers on Organic Farms, an organization that connects volunteers with farmers all over the world) on an organic farm in Cape Cod. I’ve also been able to volunteer at some local farms here in Collier County. I learned a lot from these experiences, including basics on growing, harvesting, crop rotation, and composting. I loved spending time outside, getting my hands in the dirt, and interacting with plants. It gave me such a strong sense of joy.” Gabe cited a similar experience. “I spent four seasons working on a 120acre organic family farm in Boulder, Colorado. Through farming, I developed a strong work ethic and learned the importance of teamwork. I found that farming was very therapeutic and taught me patience. Plus, I love getting dirty!” Gabe and Emily encouraged other families to just start gardening, even if they are inexperienced. “If you’re interested in starting a garden, just do it,” Emily said. “Don’t let doubts or worries hold you back, and enjoy the process. It’s okay to start small and learn as you go. Planting seedlings is much easier than starting from seeds.”

Costumes on a Dime: 11 Ways to Get Your Kid’s Costume for Less

here is always this sense of excitement in the air when October rolls around. Costumes are proudly displayed in stores, candy adorns the grocery aisles, and kids seem to talk endlessly about what they are going to be. But for a mother, thoughts of too much candy and expensive costumes are what’s on her mind. This year, why not take the thrill of Halloween into your own hands? Find a cheaper costumer (or gasp, make it!), sort through your child’s candy bag (or eat it!), and embrace those little voices that beg to share their latest fad with you. Here are 11 ways to find a cheaper costume for this year’s Halloween: 1. If costumes are too expensive for you this year, check out the regular toy aisles for every day dress up outfits. Halloween costumes can be marked up just because, so go for one of your kiddo’s favorite heroines and reuse it at your next dress up party. 2. Twinkle Twinkle Little Store and Once Upon a Child in Naples carry costumes at a discounted price, and they will buy your old costumes. 3. Call a friend and swap your child’s Hulk outfit for their Ironman one. 4. Shop online. Amazon and Ebay are both great websites to use when you are looking for more affordable options. 5. Make your own. Take ideas from Pinterest and find items you have laying around the house. Make a list of the items you do not have and grab them the next time you are out so that you are not worrying about it. 6. Post a message on Facebook and let friends and family know

that you are looking for costumes. Borrow or “rent” one for a few dollars and save yourself a trip to the store. 7. Garage sales are one of the best places to find costumes. Seriously. Especially newborn to 12 months age where they cannot really be worn again as dress up outfits. At that age, you wear them once and that is it. Take advantage of one mom’s love for buying expensive tutus and turn it into one of your best saving money moments. 8. Consignment stores are a great place to find gently used costumes. 9. Price match. This is a big one. Some stores like Toys R Us and Walmart will actually match any competitor’s lower price. Most stores will adjust the price of an item if it has gone on sale within 14 days of when it was purchased. It never hurts to ask. 10. Lay-a-Way. If your child absolutely has to have the most expensive or one-of-a-kind costume that cannot be found anywhere, ask the store if lay-a-way is an option. 11. The number one tip for getting the most ridiculously priced costumes? Snag ‘em up right after Halloween for the following year. Most costumes are marked down by 70-90% off their original prices. Enjoy the fruits of your labor this year as your kids walk out the door in their new-to-them, cheap-to-you costumes. Less time worrying about money means more time diving into the candy.
