SYBIL M. FAVROT ESTATE OF

Among her many civic accomplishments, Mrs. Favrot served on Tulane University’s Board of Administrators (as the second female trustee in the University’s history), chaired the Newcomb Alumnae Association, served as president of the Hermann-Grima/Gallier House Board of Managers, and on the boards of the New Orleans Botanical Garden Foundation, Newcomb Art Gallery, Longue Vue House and Gardens and the St. Charles Avenue Association.
Her one-and-a half-acre English-style garden, known as Greenbough, is listed on the Smithsonian Institution registry of notable gardens. The house and garden are also featured in The Majesty of St. Charles Avenue.
Mrs. Favrot was generous in sharing her space. She entertained extensively, offering up her elegantly appointed home and garden for her many special causes and occasions, including several memorable Garden Club of America garden parties. Through her gracious hospitality, she was in many ways an ambassador for her beloved city.
The estate collection includes fine antique French furniture, paintings and objets, garden accessories and Oushak rugs.

Sir Denis Hamilton was Editor-in-Chief of the London Times and Sunday Times, Chairman of Reuters and a Trustee of the British Museum; Lady Hamilton was an author, residing in England and Italy.
Dr. Nigel Hamilton is a non-fiction author, academic and broadcaster. His best-selling biography of the young John F. Kennedy, JFK: Reckless Youth, was adapted for a popular television mini-series.
STEPHEN REMSBERG NEW ORLEANS, LA RARE RUM & SPIRITS FROM THE COLLECTION OF
Stephen “Professor” Remsberg (1947-2022) was a maritime attorney who amassed the world’s largest collection of extinct cane spirits, private or public, with bottles dating back to the 1880s. During the 42 years he spent acquiring vintage rum and arcane historical knowledge on the subject, he became a world-renowned rum expert, sought-after on several continents as a lecturer and spirits judge.
Stephen was not the kind of collector who kept his treasures under lock and key. If he had more than one bottle of a particular vintage rum, he’d open it and pour you a shot, which I discovered when I first visited Stephen’s New Orleans home in 2005. Upon entering the antechamber between the kitchen and dining room that housed his bar, I asked him where he’d sourced the photo-realist rum bottle wallpaper pattern. Did he have it made, or could I buy some for my own walls? Then I realized I wasn’t looking at a trompe l’oeil, but a trompe l’iquor. The bottles were real - 637 of them, on narrow custom-built shelves, lining every wall from floor to ceiling.
This collection was halved in 2020 when Stephen sold parts of it to Luca Gargano of Velier Imports. Those bottles now reside at Velier’s headquarters in Genoa, Italy. But Stephen held onto many of his most personally prized vintage bottles, which he kept close at home, and he continued acquiring additional rare old expressions until his passing. These 191 bottles of rum (and 48 bottles of other spirits) are what his heirs have now put up for auction.
To those who knew him, Stephen Remsberg will not only be remembered for his unique collection but also for his unique character: He was an obsessive collector, but he thought nothing of pouring out his most prized possessions for his guests; he was a lawyer, but he was also the least confrontational guy you’d ever meet; he was an introvert, but he shone when speaking in public, even to rooms of more than 200 people. Above all he was a true bon vivant who loved the finer things in life, and loved indulging in them with fellow sybarites. He was a generous host, a talented cook, and a loyal friend. Oh, and did I mention that he had good taste in rum?

Lifelong New Orleanian, Jane Seidenbach Phillips (1922-2024) was a graduate of Isidore Newman School and Newcomb College. During World War II she supported the war effort by working as a draftsman at Higgins Industries. She was active in civic organizations including the American Red Cross, New Orleans Museum of Art, National Council of Jewish Women and Touro Synagogue Sisterhood.
An avid collector, her estate includes antique English furniture, silver and distinctive decorative objects. In later years Mrs. Phillips worked at Moss Antiques. She is shown here heading to work on Royal Street.

Note: George Rodrigue’s years in art school, first in Lafayette and then in Los Angeles, in the 1960s gave him a solid grounding in the techniques and theories of design, drawing and painting. The time away from his home in small New Iberia, Louisiana also provided him with an acute appreciation of the uniqueness of his Cajun heritage, triggering a sense of nostalgia and purpose. He realized the traditional ways of the Cajuns were vanishing into the modern world, and he made it his mission to capture it visually. In his words, he would “graphically interpret the Cajun culture on canvas,” breaking the traditional rules of art to do so.
After three years of painting solely landscapes, Rodrigue began to incorporate people into his scenes, often inspired by his mother’s early photographs and local folklore. The Cajuns, the ones who walk out from behind the distinctive oak trees in a Rodrigue painting, are not hidden in the shadows of heavy branches and hanging moss. They are framed by the trees and foliage, their heads never touching the sky, and they shine with a mysterious light. They are cut out and pasted onto their landscape, just as
the Acadians were displaced from Nova Scotia and inserted into South Louisiana. As Wendy Rodrigue states: “Most importantly, in every Rodrigue painting the Cajun people glow with their culture.” This trait is particularly poignant in the artist’s canvases from the mid-1970s, such as the endearing “Queen of the Rice Festival, Crowley, Louisiana” offered here.
Festivals have long played a central role in society in Louisiana, and as Rodrigue describes when writing about this painting, they were an important part of life for the Cajuns. In this timeless scene, the queen and her court ride in a wagon decorated with magnolias as part of the Rice Festival in Crowley. Held in October each year, the Rice Festival (now International Rice Festival) is one of Louisiana’s oldest and largest agricultural festivals, first held in 1937 to honor the rice industry, its workers and “the grain that not only makes us a community but family.” “Queen of the Rice Festival, Crowley, Louisiana” is a magnificent example of Rodrigue’s early Cajun series, included in The Cajuns of George Rodrigue monograph of 1976, and one of his most quintessentially Louisiana subjects. The canvas perfectly encapsulates the artist’s carefully developed and modern interpretation of the Acadiana landscape which serves as the ideal setting for his enduring depictions of the Cajuns.

Note: Emilie and Marie de Hoa LeBlanc were two of five children born to Charles Emile LeBlanc and Elizabeth Eulalie de Hoa. Emilie was the older of the two, born in New Orleans in 1870, and Marie was born four years later. The family lived at 1225 Chartres Street, where the sisters remained after the death of their parents in 1920 until they moved to a home on Coliseum Street in 1930. The pair remained extremely close, and they lived, worked and traveled together until Emilie’s death in 1941.
Both women attended Newcomb College which would mark the beginning of their long and flourishing relationship with the institution. As some of the earliest pioneering students, their works were included in the first public exhibition of Newcomb’s decorated pottery in 1896. Later, they became paid instructors where they influenced a generation of young female artists.

The pair were well-recognized in their field – with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston acquiring one of Emilie’s oak leaf design vases as early as 1899 after exhibiting a selection of ten Newcomb pots, and Marie winning the bronze medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis for one of her designs. The sisters’ skill stands out even among the group of talented women at Newcomb Pottery, and they became two of the most accomplished and prolific decorators during the early years of production. Their vibrant paintings and surviving sketches serve to further highlight their artistic gifts and creativity.

He studied at the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans, the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, and the Art Students League of New York.
In 1940, Schoenberger was commissioned by the WPA to paint a mural for the New Orleans Public Library branch at 2940 Canal Street. The resulting work, entitled “The History of Printing,” was deemed at the time the largest mural in the United States on a single canvas at nine feet tall and forty-eight feet wide, and it depicted the development of the written word from ancient history to modern day. The mural was long forgotten until it was re-discovered in 2009 during renovations on the building.
One can also see Schoenberger’s close ties to the New Orleans modernists, such as the aforementioned Ninas in the drawing offered here. It is rare for his works to come up at auction.

Note: Famously elusive and private, Arthur Kern is a native of New Orleans who received his BA and MFA from Tulane University. After a brief stint teaching at the University of Southwest Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) from 1967 to 1969, Kern taught at Tulane from 1969 until his retirement in 1996. Little information can be found on Kern’s early work, as he destroyed most of his paintings and drawings for a fresh start in sculpture some four decades ago.
In 2016, Kern consented to an exhibition of his sculpture at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, curated by the novelist John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Arresting and surrealist, Kern’s sculpture is a clear transformation from his early painting, from which only a few canvases have survived such as the piece on offer here. In a letter to the owner, Kern expresses his elated surprise to see the piece again:
“The painting depicted, entitled “Celebration” was certainly done by me… It was done while I was attending John McCrady’s Art School. During my grammer [sic] school days I took lessons from John’s wife Mary. Shortly after I began high school John invited me to attend classes at this school on Bourbon St.
I continued studying with him during my high school years but had to reluctantly give that up to concentrate on my studies at Tulane. John did not teach children’s classes so I was the only kid enrolled in his adult painting and life drawing classes…
As for the content of the painting, there is not much I can say. I have never tried to understand my own work. Images appear from I know not where—the subconscious perhaps— and I go with it. I hold the view that a work of art is not to be understood. It is to be experienced. I’m content to let the viewer do the interpretation if he is so inclined.”

Note: A keen observer of class dynamics, Guy Pène du Bois built a successful artistic career documenting the bourgeois lives of the Parisians and Americans he encountered throughout his lifetime. Born to Louisiana writer and journalist, Henri Pène du Bois, Guy inherited his father’s enthusiasm for the French language and culture. In 1905, after spending his early career studying under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase and alongside fellow students George Bellows and Edward Hopper, he traveled to Paris with his father where his work was exhibited in the Paris Salon for the first time that same year. Due to his father falling ill, he was forced to return to New York in 1906. There, he would go on to become an art critic for the New York Tribune and remain involved in the local art scene, even helping to organize the 1913 Armory Show, which included several of his works. Du Bois would return to Paris in 1924 for a few years to focus on painting, before settling in New York once again to teach at his own art school and the Art Students League in New York.
While he was known primarily as a satirist of social scenes, du Bois’ painting on offer here is a rare and tender still life. The pink, white and red tones of the flowers glow against the saturated blue background, and the artist’s expert and effortless brushwork is demonstrated in the shading of the vase and the petals of the flowers. Painted later in his life, this 1948 composition is a haunting example of du Bois’ mature talent.

Note: Originally from Eunice, Louisiana, Ward moved to New Orleans at the age of seventeen. She worked as a registered nurse, eventually married Dr. Simon Ward and began taking classes at Newcomb Art School. In the late 1940s, her marriage deteriorated, and Ward fled New Orleans to follow her creative dreams. She enrolled at Black Mountain College to hone her skills and learn from some of the greatest and most innovative artists of the time. She befriended and worked alongside numerous soon to be world-renowned artists and intellectuals, including the formidable and highly admired art critic, Clement Greenberg, who became a close confidant. She continued her studies at the IIT Institute of Design in Chicago and eventually landed in New York in 1955.
New York at the time was the bustling apex of the contemporary art movement, and Ward had no trouble finding a place for herself, inevitably making friends with the city’s greats such Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Frost and the aforementioned Greenberg. Ward often remained behind the scenes and behind the camera at gallery openings, documenting her influential friends in attendance through her photography. The enigmatic Ward was at the center of the dynamic 1960s New York art scene and surrounded herself with the most successful luminaries of the day, many of whom whose work would later grace the most hallowed of museum walls. A passionate artist in her own right, Ward’s works stylistically followed those of her more famous cohorts with an aesthetic all her own, evident in her many experiments with a variety of media.
Her role within the group, while long forgotten and much overlooked, is nonetheless incredibly significant in a realm boasting of few women. While the art world at the time was relegated primarily to men, they found their equal in Ward.
In March of 2021, Garden and Gun published an extensive profile of Ward written by John Ed Bradley. Through Bradley’s careful research, Ward’s place among her contemporaries was finally cemented.

Neal Auction Company was founded June 7, 1984 by the late John R. Neal, noted collector and authority on 19th century American decorative arts.
From the beginning, Neal Auction Company has had a core focus on the history and material culture of the Lower Mississippi River Valley, which has led to our discovery of rare examples of furniture, paintings and decorative arts of the region, many of which are now in important institutional and private collections.
Our history includes legendary onsite auctions of important historic collections, notably the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Vicksburg, MS in 1984, and Houmas House Plantation, Darrow, LA in 2003, as well as block-buster sales of private collections such as the estate of author and tastemaker Julia Evans Reed in 2021.
Over the past forty years, we have enjoyed a frontrow seat to the ever-evolving market trends in taste and collecting, as we assist in dispersing estates and introducing the objects to new collections.
Today’s savvy collectors particularly respond to the eco-conscious aspect of recycling objects via auction. They recognize that they are seeking out unique objects with a history, not “cookie-cutter” mass-produced “disposable” goods.
As we enter our 5th decade, Neal Auction Company continues to be family-owned and locally managed, serving our New Orleans and regional community. We are proud to be one of Magazine Street’s landmark businesses, having debuted at 4139 Magazine then subsequently relocating to our 4038 Magazine address in 1990.
