A MESSAGE from the Head of School Last year, Tesseract School embarked on a new journey. Thanks to a group of dedicated parents, the school is wholly owned by the Paradise Valley Private School Foundation. Their support enables us to continue providing a quality learning experience for our students. With this transition, we also initiated our first comprehensive fund raising campaign to provide funds that will help us continue to improve and grow the school. Our parents stepped up to the plate and responded positively to this new initiative, raising $144,000 for the school. But it’s about more than the dollars and cents raised. It is about building a better foundation for Tesseract School and creating the premier private independent school in Arizona and the Southwest. Thank you to all who made this journey with us. With the donations we have received, the school purchased teaching aids to help our students with everything from motor skills and balance to language skills and cognitive development. In the fall, we were able to purchase new computers for the IMC, expanding opportunities for our students to learn more about technology. Further support allowed us to install a new multi-purpose court surface.

Additional thanks go to all the volunteers who helped support the school’s mission. From the Live and In Color committee, to P.A.T.T., to our parent ambassadors, to the individual parents who provided a helping hand every day. All of our volunteers have embraced the values of the school and taken them to new heights. Hopefully, as you read through these pages, you will be inspired by these acts of kindness. They have laid the foundations for the many things that we want to accomplish here at the school. However, though the foundation is set, we will depend on others to help us become a model for schools to follow. As a non-profit, independent school, donations are essential for continuing to improve facilities, technology and provide financial aid for students. Tuition is an important part of our funding, but without donations, we will not be able to become the premier private independent school we intend to be. We can already see the important benefits these gifts have made available to our students. Our hopes are to raise additional funding to continue improving the opportunities for your children. A MESSAGE from the Board of Trustees The 2003-2004 school year saw significant changes for the School. The Tesseract Community welcomed its new Head of School, Nigel Taplin, who was chosen by the Board after an extensive national search. With his 27 years of experience in premier independent schools, Nigel rallied the faculty and parents to recommit to carrying out the Tesseract Mission. The Board was busy as well. With the help of the generous contributions of many Tesseract families, the Foundation was successful in its campaign to purchase the school facilities. The Board has also increased in size from five to ten members and embarked on an intensive strategic planning process that will guide us in making important decisions concerning the School’s direction, ideal size, and facilities. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank all of you for your generous commitments of time, money, and faith. The Tesseract School continues to thrive because of your support.

LEARNING. GROWING. GETTING STRONGER. The 2003-2004 school year saw significant changes for the School. The Tesseract Community began its transition to becoming a non-profit independent school. At that time, a group of parents, committed to the school and its values, purchased the School from the Tesseract Corporation and formed the non-profit Paradise Valley Private School Foundation
to operate the School. This group of 48 parents also formed an LLC and contributed significant funding to purchase the school facilities from the Tesseract Corporation. The LLC then leased the property to the Foundation. At the end of 2003, another major step forward in the School’s history occurred when the Foundation purchased the property from the LLC. This significant achievement was possible because many of the parents who were members of the LLC generously contributed their stake in the LLC to the Foundation. The Tesseract Community owes a great deal of gratitude to the many parents who contributed financial resources, time, faith, and vision to ensure the future of the School. Tesseract is now on the road to achieving its goal of becoming a premier private, independent school in Arizona and the Southwest.

PROJECT Updates Technology Equipment Through the generosity of several parents, we were able to upgrade our computer resources in the IMC last fall. The improvements included new computers and monitors, as well as a scanner for the students. Additional software installed included the brainstorming software Inspiration, Logger Pro, and Print Music! for use in our music program. A Smart Board was purchased to allow for interactive computer presentations. These improvements allow our students to be current on technology-based educational resources. Networking improvements were also made, improving faculty’s communications with our families and with each other. The resources will be further improved over the summer with a portion of the funds raised from last spring’s fundraiser, Live and In Color. Preschool A group of preschool parents saw the need of enhancing the preschool program. They worked with the teachers to identify a wish list of items that would supplement the learning experiences of the children. Then they asked their fellow pre-school parents to help fund the purchase of these items. Now, the children have new tricycles to ride during recess, improving motor skills and balance. They also have a sensory table that enhances the students’ play through developing their fine motor skills, language skills, and cognitive development. Thank you to all the parents who have donated to the preschool. Class Gift Our graduating class even stepped up to leave a legacy for future students. Throughout their eighth grade year, this class spent afternoons hosting bake sales and weekend nights babysitting to raise funds for their class gift. Their efforts paid off when they made their donation during graduation. They presented the School with a new set of bleachers to watch our athletes compete. They even had enough left over to make financial contributions to the Performing Arts and Financial Aid funds. Thank you to this group of students who made a lasting impact on the school. Multi-Purpose Court In April, we cut the ribbon on our new multi-purpose court. With the support of our parents through the Booster Club we were able to install a new multi-purpose court. This new surface provides an improved play area for our sports and physical

ADDITIONAL DONORS TO TESSERACT SCHOOL through the Arizona Scholarship Fund In 1997, the state legislature passed the Private Scholarships Tax Credit, allowing Arizona taxpayers to make a voluntary contribution to a scholarship funding organization in Arizona and receive a tax credit. Through a partnership with the Arizona Scholarship Fund and the Arizona School Choice Trust, many donors made contributions, and designated Tesseract School as the recipient of those scholarship dollars. The ability to make this contribution and designate students at Tesseract to receive the scholarships is truly invaluable to the School, and to the families it helps. “LIVE AND IN COLOR” Funds Technology and Financial Ad After countless hours of work by the committee members, Live and In Color ended with success. More than $85,000 was raised on April 3rd to help The TesseracT School with much needed funds for technology and financial aid. With some of the funds, the School will be able to purchase new computers for classrooms and the IMC. Remaining funds will provide resources to enroll a student population that is highly diverse, talented, and motivated. “I’m excited about providing such advanced technology in the classrooms,” said Nigel Taplin. “The success of the auction means our students can take on even more challenging projects with the tools of the 21st Century.” Some of the most popular auction items that night were the class art projects, the unique experiences offered by our faculty, and the always coveted reserved parking spaces. You might be seeing our winning families at places around town such as in the private dining room at Shogun restaurant, at America West Arena catching a Suns game, or on a ride along with Rural Metro. Thank you to all the families and community members who helped with our success. “I’m very pleased with the support that the Tesseract families gave us,” said Linda Fisher, who chaired the event. “I was thrilled to see so many parents attend the event and to have the community come together to support our efforts. The planning committee dedicated many hours towards this event and it is nice to see their efforts make a difference to the school.”

Faculty Profile: TERRI SCULLIN In 1999, the music program at the Tesseract School became something worth singing about. That is when Music Teacher Terri Scullin entered all our students’ lives. Not only does Ms. Scullin teach general music classes to all students in grades preschool through grade five, she also directs the school’s chorus and drama programs. She chose to be a professional educator so that she could share her love of music and theater with children. Ms. Scullin has led our students through many outstanding performances. Most recently, the middle school chorus and performing arts students brought a whole new life to “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” selling out all shows! The Orff Schulwerk method is a way of teaching music, created by composer Carl Orff and his associate Gunild Keetman, which is an active approach to teaching music that fosters creativity. Improvisation and composition learned through this method supports the Tesseract School core value of Dedication to Life Long Learning.

In addition to the spring musical, Ms. Terri also conducts choral concerts and drama performances for the middle school students as well as grade level concerts including all preschool and lower school students. Over the summer, Ms. Scullin taught at a teacher training workshop at ASU and in November she presented at the American Orff Schulwerk Association’s National Conference in Long Beach, California. This past year, Ms. Scullin also led team building workshops in music and drama for corporations such as Cricket and American Express. In addition to everything Ms. Scullin does here at the School and in the community, she also participates in local theater productions. Last fall she performed as Sara Jane Moore in “Is What It Is” Theater’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” and in the spring she performed as Mrs. Malins at the ASU West IAP program’s production of “James Joyce’s The Dead.” So make sure you catch Ms. Terri on stage - both at School and in the community.

Faculty Profile: CATHARINE STEFFENS All the students at the Tesseract School know Senora Steffens. As our Middle School Spanish Teacher, Catharine Steffens continues expanding our students’ knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. She has helped to create new programs and opportunities that encourage learning and understanding. “I am committed to all our students having the opportunity to learn a foreign language and to expand their knowledge of our world. This commitment is to our students here at Tesseract as well as all elementary and middle school students statewide. We are fortunate at Tesseract to have foreign language included in our vision of educating young people with the skills to successfully compete and contribute to our global community,” says Senora Steffens. At Tesseract she began a chapter of Sociedad Hispanica de Amistad called Jovenes sin barreras, which means Youth Without Barriers. She also initiated various pen pal programs, one with a school in Spain. Through Senora Steffens’ leadership, a wide variety of well-known speakers came to speak with the students. Prof. David Foster of ASU spoke on the Jewish Religious and Cultural Presence in Latin America. O. Ricardo Pimentel of the Arizona Republic gave us an Inside Look at Immigration. Maria Ester Malvarez, a Fulbright recipient from Uruguay, spent two weeks with us sharing the culture of Uruguay. Students have made use of their language learning to order lunch at a Mexican restaurant and had the opportunity to receive Spanish Flamenco dance instruction. But we don’t keep this treasure to ourselves. Senora Steffens is very well respected in the state and national foreign language communities. She is very involved with AZLA (Arizona Language Association), the state level of ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). She has presented at two of their conferences and was published twice in their newsletter. She is also a member of NNELL (National Network for Early Language Learning) as well as ACTFL. As Senora Steffens educates our students, she continues her own education. She is pursuing her masters degree in Spanish Language and Culture with a focus on the use of authentic literature (literature written by and for native speakers) in language learning at the elementary/middle school levels. At ASU she has had the opportunity to be a guest speaker at a methodology class for teachers and hopes to recruit more teachers to Foreign Language in Elementary School teaching. Thanks to Senora Steffens for making Spanish such an integral part of our students’ learning!
2003- 2004 Board of Trustees The board of trustees is the primary governing body of Tesseract School, and is composed of community members and the head of school, who serves as an ex-officio member of the board. The board of trustees is responsible for establishment of policy, the appointment of the head of school, and the preservation of the school's mission, finances, facilities and programs. Its members work in concert to make decisions in the best interests of the school through a variety of committees and task forces.
