Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

How They work

Gels, rinses and foams are different types of alcohol hand sanitizer available. A variety of advantages exist for alcohol hand sanitizers over regular hand washing; yet, you should always wash grossly soiled hands with water and antimicrobial soap, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s hand hygiene guidelines.

Products currently on the market that are considered effective contain ethyl alcohol (62% to 95% concentration), benzalkonium chloride, salicylic acid, pyroglutamic acid, and triclosan. These products are available in fast-drying gels,

foams, wipes, and mixed with moisturizing lotions. According to the CDC, hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol can quickly decrease the number of germs on hands in many situations, but not all sanitizers are equally effective in eradicating all germs. The CDC also reports that hand sanitizers are not effective when the hands are visibly dirty.

Best Practices

Patients should apply a sufficient amount of product to the palm of 1 hand andensure that the sanitizer makes contact with the complete surface of your hands, especially in between your fingers. Pay close attention to you fingertips where bacteria hides close to your fingernails. Rub your hands together until the sanitizer dries.

Hand sanitizers work on bacteria by stripping the outer layer of oil from your skin, which destroys “transient” bacteria (picked up from various surfaces we’ve touched). Once you’ve used the sanitizer, bacteria will regrow, but more slowly. This keeps the germs you harbor inside your skin from coming to the surface.

n December 8, 2011, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts affirmed the final decision and order of the Board of Registration in Dentistry suspending the license of a dentist who failed to conduct and record weekly spore testing. The dentist’s failure constituted dental malpractice.*

Biological Monitoring and Indicators With the results of that recent case, spore testing (biological monitoring) is more important than ever before. Spore testing uses highly resistant bacterial spores (Biological Indicators) to test sterilizers. Biological Indicators are considered the benchmark for biological testing.

ave you ever left dirty dishes to sit at home without rinsing or soaking them?

If you have, you know that it is much harder to clean them later. The same is true of dental instruments. If instruments cannot be cleaned immediately after patient treatment, they should be placed in a holding solution. As with your dishes at home, by keeping instruments moist, debris can’t dry and harden. This makes the cleaning process much more effective. Later, when you have time, you can begin the actual processing of the instruments.

Using a detergent solution and sonic-action, ultrasonic cleaners break up and loosen debris on instruments. To maintain efficiency, ultrasonic cleaners must undergo scheduled maintenance

A holding solution is simply a noncorrosive liquid, preferably one that contains a surfactant, stored in a hard walled, spill-proof container with a lid.

Because of the potential exposure to infectious material, the container must be labeled as a biohazard. It is not cost-effective nor necessary to use a disinfectant as the holding solution, because contaminated particles on the instruments prevent effective disinfection. In addition, the chemical becomes contaminated with bioburden, rendering the disinfectant ineffective over time. Remember that a holding solution is used only as a way to keep debris moist to facilitate cleaning later.

You should clean your holding solution twice a day.
