By Kevin D Steil As mentioned in my recent blog, Supporting Steampunk, steampunk as a hobby and interest has affected people in different and mostly positive ways. Like many in our community, I enjoyed the forms and expressions of steampunk before it had a publicly used name.
It has brought people together to share ideas and passions, create opportunities, and most importantly, create new friendships and connections.
My bookshelves are full of written worlds, the walls covered with art, the closet filled with outfits and accessories. Better than all of that is that my email, postal box, and life in general, is filled with friends, colleagues, and professional associates.

Within the plot, a lot of things are not what they seem to be which makes the book a captivating read, full of surprises.
Author. Aetherhertz starts with a Germany conspiracy, the birth of a child is covered up, and for a long time, I thought the conspirators were the main antagonists of the novel, but I She wrote two steampunk was wrong. novels: “Aetherhertz” and “Aetherresonanz” (both only in german).
Another positive aspect of the novel is the depth and attention to historical detail. The story is set in 1910, social structure, manners and mannerisms, and social norms are exactly as they were in Imperial Germany of the time, which is completely in keeping with the background.
She loves steampunk for all the obvious reasons: really nice people, beautiful clothes and awesome accessories. It is a way of thinking and seeing the world which has made her life richer.
This brings me to the setting and the plot:
Recently, a few collegues and her created a short film: “Aether affairs”, a teaser for a webseries.
The place is Baden-Baden, a mid-sized town in Southern Germany in the foothills of the Black Forest and one of the most popular spas of Imperial Germany.
The setting is out of her books and she´s extremely proud, that may be able to show it in February: look out for the “Evil Kraken” Aetherhertz by Anja Bagus, (rough translation Aetherheart, it is actually a bit of a pun based on the German word for heart and the unit of measurement Hertz) was the first complete German steampunk novel I read, and I still consider it the best, but I am getting ahead of myself.
The world of Aetherhertz is ours, it only started to change 10 years before the story begins.
At the turn of the century, around 1899, that is, rivers and lakes started emitting a strange mist, the aether and since then, the world has changed. Aether changes and mutates living things it comes into contact with to one degree or another, depending on the purity of the aether and the intensity and time of exposure,

ArcaneArmoury and The Navigatrix are a brother and sister team with separate online shops at Etsy. com. They are both trained modelmakers that now run their own businesses, designing and creating original Steampunk items. They have shared a stall for two years running at Europe’s largest Steampunk event, ‘Weekend at the Asylum’, run by the Victorian Steampunk Society. http://steampunk.synthasite.com/ Matt of Arcane Armoury says: “I’ve been an industrial model maker now for the best part of 16 years, working on film and television, exhibition and products, mostly building items designed by others. My Etsy shop is my chance to design and create props for sale to the public. “Why Steampunk? I just like the aesthetic. You can make anything out of plastic but there’s a weight and feel to an item that’s been crafted from brass and wood that gives an item both quality and durability. It harks back to materials that were used commonly in the Victorian era, adding an authentic appearance to designs that never were. I enjoy working closely with people on commissions for specific ideas that they have. For example, one popular type of commission is for customized ‘Harmonic Screwdrivers’. Another is for prop weaponry; a note about this - due to recent legislation,

prop weapons are difficult to ship to some international countries.”
Matt welcomes all serious enquiries. He can be contacted through
https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ArcaneArmoury Sally-Ann of The Navigatrix says: “I graduated with a Degree in Design Representation but after three years in the modelmaking industry, mainly working in architecture, realised that I was not utilising my creativity.
I retrained as a teacher and put my creative energies into my hobby of Live Roleplaying, which I’ve been doing for about 20 years. Around the time that Matt started his shop, a friend introduced me to the concept of Steampunk. I became inspired to put together a costume and created a character - being used to making characters with the help of LRP system guidelines, this was a strange experience.
There were no limits! I researched Steampunk costumes online and came up with the idea of a female navigator and so, The Navigatrix was born. I made a hairclip for my costume, realised that others might like them and asked Matt (knowing nothing of how Etsy works) if I could sell them in his shop. He just turned to me and said “ Why don’t you make your own shop?” I use materials mostly bought from local charity shops and because of that, every design is an individual work of art. I love the earthy, rich colours of Steampunk fashion and the creative freedom to allow fantasy to mix with history. Often, pieces inspire snippets of story that you can read in the item descriptions. Currently, I’m working on a range of tribal Steampunk which I have called the Aether Nomads range.” Sally-Ann does not currently offer commissions but is happy to do small alterations. She can be contacted through
“We support each other, by modelling, discussing designs, finding materials and sharing each others’ shops.
We have made many wonderful friends and collaborated with some amazing artists through working in this genre. We look forward to hearing from you!”

There is this running joke among my friends and family that the next time someone asks me where I am from, I will answer with the name of some distant exotic locale, such as Sumatra, or Timbuktu. I recognize that I sometimes confuse people. They see my hijab (Muslim woman’s head scarf) and Muslim garb and assume I am from a far-away difficult to pronounce country. Then they hear me speak with a distinct New England accent and become confused. Then upon further inquiry, I proceed to blow away every single other preconceived notion. A TV and feature film writer, Madeleine has recently discovered that writing comics is way more fun and cannot wait to do more. Winner of the Sloan Fellowship for screenwriting and numerous other awards while at UCLA Film School, she discovered Steampunk almost by accident. (A very happy accident.) Formerly a nationally ranked epee fencer, she has competed nationally and internationally. She is an avid reader of steampunk, science fiction, fantasy and historical military fiction. Madeleine lives with her rocket scientist husband, David. She will also be running a Kickstarter starting Jan. 21 to fund a print run of chapter three in the six issue mini-series.
She will be writing an article on Granville Woods, an African American engineer/scientist, who is a character in my steampunk supernatural webcomic BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY. Boston Metaphysical Society is about an ex-Pinkerton detective and his spirit photographer partner who battle supernatural forces in late 1800’s Boston. So I think most steampunks stick to the groups, forums and sites they know and where their friends are. Action becomes digitally localized.
By Marcus R. Gilman When Kevin Steil, the Airship Ambassador, first contacted me regarding his initiative Steampunk Hands around the World I actually thought it would be some type of fundraiser, which of course it is not. Instead it is a brilliant idea aimed towards connecting steampunks around the globe and showing steampunk is a global movement. The brilliance lies in its simplicity, everybody can join in, provided they are on the internet which in this day and age is not an obstacle, especially not for steampunks, after all, our scene galvanized and formed on the web. This simplicity also means participation is free and need not be time-consuming, all it takes is a simple tweed hashtag #steampunkhands, tweeted during February 2014 and you are in.
ampunks in my experience operate locally, sometimes vehemently so. Then you sometimes meet at conventions, of which there are many in the USA but not so many elsewhere, between conventions, there is relatively little interaction or not as much as could be. Also, and again this is my experience, others may well have had different ones, the nature of the internet makes it easy to loose contact and miss the big picture. There are plenty of steampunk groups on Facebook and also several forums on the web in general. Nobody really has the time or the language skills to be active in all of them.
So, in a strange way, the internet right now separates us, not geographically but rather socially, or should I say tribally. You choose your tribe, the people you get along with best, which translates into a certain forum or group and you stay there. The Steampunk Hands around the World initiative is a step to remedy this situation, to get people into contact with new faces around the web and demonstrate how widespread steampunk is and that it is a global movement. If everything goes well, maybe this is the first of many those events. After all, Steampunk Hands around the World is ridiculously easy to participate in and only slightly more complex to organize. We could make this a yearly staple of the steampunk scene or maybe even do it twice a year. However, doing it too often may actually turn it into “just another event, so it should not be done to frequently to keep it a special occasion. Another effect Steampunk Hands around the World could have, is of course inspire others to do something similar.

As a side note, one of Kevin’s aims was, as stated in the original email I received: “The basic idea is Steampunk Hands Around the World as some way to show that our community is indeed global, and the world is made a bit smaller and friendlier because of it.” Sadly, I have made the exact opposite experience in one particular forum while trying to promote this event: Ridicule, hostility and insults. Yes, just as it is with every community, steampunk, too, has its share of nasty people, trolls, bullies. Luckily, this has been the exception, everybody else I approached reacted positively, even with enthusiasm. So, let’s see how Steampunk Hands around the World works out, it is looking good already. Also, let’s hope this will only be the first of a series of events like this, for every steampunk around the globe, because this is a global subculture!

Poison Garden was born with the aim of mixing modern rock/metaltendencies with Steampunkelements in order to create an original and evocative sound. That’s how a young couple spends the first two years of marriage; dominated by their creativity they try to express the word of steam which lies in their minds. During summer 2012, a well-experienced guitarist decides to take an active part in the project. Amazed by the potentiality of the tracks and fascinated by the plot that connects them, he involves a talented drummer.

She believes firmly that political correctness is more crippling than common sense and should be ingested in small doses... With that in mind, she’d like to present a world and characters that are three-dimensional and engaging. Suna Dasi, the founder of Steampunk India, considers herself a direct product of the British Empire. Her ancestors left Madras in 1861, on a British East India ship, bound for the Caribbean as indentured workers. Her grandfather was born on a Scottish-owned sugar, banana and coconut plantation in St. Vincent, and raised a Hindu. He was eventually released from his born status and married a native girl from the Dutch Caribbean. Steampunk India is currently brought to you from Edinburgh, Scotland. Suna Dasi wanted to write Indian Steampunk because she wanted to read it. As there was a lack of the characters and settings she wished for most, she began developing plot lines and people until they were clamouring to be written down.
52
She enjoys lacing her fiction with strong female protagonists, a lively dollop of general irreverence and some inevitable social commentary. The photo gallery on her website is her way of working out certain characters that exist in the alternate India she is giving shape. Suna Dasi is very pleased to be involved in Steampunk Hands Around the World, as she thinks the breaking of both taboos and boundaries is a always a good idea. She will be contributing by uploading an exclusive Valentine’s Day story on her site on the 14th of February and will also re-release the video she made for EuroSteamCon in 2013. In this video she was asked to speak about what Steampunk means to her and it is extremely relevant to the central aim of the Steampunk Hands project.
