The project aims to create a resort showcasing elements of Cycladic architecture in the context of Dubai. This multi-functional resort would contain unique, extravagant features that will entice visitors. Resort of this nature would include private and public activities that cater to both tourist and residents. These blocks would be designed seamlessly in order for them to blend harmoniously without creating a divide between guests or visitors. This could nudge the tourism industry in Dubai, therefore bringing out advancement in the economy as Dubai’s main source of revenue is tourism.

The plan attempts to emulate the waves of an ocean. The curvature in the structure follows the poetic idiosyncrasy of a wave. Water is an integral component that allowed formation of the Cyclades. Every house was created in a manner to have visual access as a forewarning towards any attacks from the water. Providing contours in the reclaimed land at regular intervals allow the imitation of a cliff in a modern manner. It also achieves vista for each space.

Born in Lebanon, Elie Saab is a self-taught fashion designer. His method of uniting orient with occident is what makes his work so unique. The structure presented features different aspectss of his life. His works depict and extensive influence of his lebanee roots. Hence, he combines this with his education at Paris. In the same manner, the modern exteriors paired with vintage accents will help achieve a visual balance and a sense of familiarity. The top floor is cantilevered in order to provide a diversion in the circulation pattern of the house. It also creates valuable space such as a balcony as well as service areas. There is a slashed wall placed in the middle of the structure which denotes the irregularity and clash of two cultures in his life. However, the rooms still are seamlessly connected. The way he portrays harmony of two worlds in his designs.

LAND USE

Al Manara is a built residential community in western Dubai. It has a price location, its neighbors include Al Safa to the east, Umm Suqeim to its north and Umm al Sheif to its west. The locality runs along the Sheikh Zayed Highway which connects it to leisure and commercial hubs of Dubai. Al Manara is a developing community, and it offers various residential and commercial villas for rent and sale. The posh locality is not more than 13 minutes away from Jumeirah Beach. In terms of property, the area does not have any apartments or townhouses and is generally favoured by families.

16

S

- There are multiple access points to Al Manara - All commercial spaces are located at the periphery - There are active commercial streets in the community - Adequate amentiites are available - Sheikh Zayed Road is in proximity

W

- Lack of mixed-use typology - No pedestrian movement due to unorganized parking - Figure ground lacks green spaces - Lack of shading devices on streets - Houses have different styles, thus breaking ambiguity

O T

- There are unused 12 meter wide pavements - 85% of Al Manara is unbuilt - There are 7 nodes present which can help provide legibility - The roads are extremely wide, opportunity for pedestrian activity - Can provide high-end community spaces

- Social block between nationals and expats, lacks sense of community - Too much barren land acts as a health hazard - Large compound walls are visually intimidating - No cycle track leads to people riding on roads - Lack of zebra crossings - Streets are insufficiently lit

Community Engagement Al Manara, Dubai, UAE Sem 7 - Urban Intervention Urban Design - Group Work (2 Students)

Research shows that people living in the developing world trust their churches, mosques and temples more than any other institution. For such people, faith is vital to shaping the attitudes, beliefs and practices that lay the foundation for everyday life. Faith unites people as a community, gives them strength, breeds hope, and inspires social justice as well as the perseverance to improve themselves and their lives. The provision of an islamic garden next to each mosque acts as a community centre that can enhance the lives of the residents as the mosque is an important part of their daily routine. The passive park allows the residents of Islamic nature to interact with each other before or after their religious practices. PHYSICAL MODEL

Mktavi River, Tbilisi, Georgia Sem 5 - Luxury Heritage Hotel

Georgia is located in the mountainous South Caucasus region of Eurasia, straddling Western Asia and Eastern Europe between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Since the aim of this project was to create a Sustainable Heritage Hotel, the obvious choice was to regard the surroundings of the site itself. Tbilisi is placed is a valley in between the mountain ranges of Georgia. The river, Mtkvari, flows through the centre of Tbilisi. Hence, my design through the plan displays the converging of the two mountain ranges which in turn creates a valley. The river flowing through the centre is depicted by the longitudinal pool that extends to the riverfront as to provide a view of the beautiful landscape in Georgia.

Dolce Vita

Crescenzago, Milan, Italy Sem 6 - Affordable Housing Units St. Gobain Multi-comfort Competition - Group Work (2 Students) The concept is based on the 5 Senses of the human body; namely Sight, Sound, Smell, Taste and Touch. The idea is to incorporate each of these senses and make a building in accordance of these senses in terms of Aesthetics, Acoustics, Ventilation, Cultural Tastes and Thermal Comfort. The building started as a 5 Sided Polygonal structure which was then split into two blocks to fit the site more efficiently. The two blocks are places in such a way that they create a narrow passage between them while providing privacy and shading from the sun. The narrow passage provides a narrative to the building as it includes separate entrances into each block while having a common passage area that makes it easier to interact with the other residents. These are the qualities we’d like to provide the residents of Dolce Vita.

Stage Design Sem 8 Group Work (4 Students) Every culture represents its own method of playing the same game. Our use of games as a base for connecting all various cultures, would allow room for engagement in terms of millenial interest as well. Throughout the years, games have been known to encourage communal behaviour. The current trend of video games allows people from any background or culture to come together. Dating back, its predecessor, arcade and board games encouraged the same. Showcasing cultural diversity through the concept of evolution of board games into video games would provide this stage an instagrammable platform to reside on.

Experimental Modelling

Rhinoceros is the latest, most used 3D modelling software. Its versatility allows you to create many different structures and with all of its capability. Rhino is particularly useful for additive manufacturing, but this program can actually be used for many different applications. It is an accurate 3D modeling software, perfect to design or for engineering analysis. As an architecture student it was important for me to learn this course in order to expand my software knowledge and create greater designs.

26

Grasshopper is a visual programming language that runs within the Rhinoceros 3D computer-aided design application. It gives us a visual interface for building algorithms that generate geometry in Rhino. These scripting tools offer powerful control over Rhino's modeling commands, including some that are not available through the graphic interface.

Heroes Architects & Engineers Internship Report

Heroes Architects and Engineers (HAE) (a Dubai-based company), is an innovative façade modelling technology that allows to visualize that the world’s most prestigious architects wish to bring to life out in the field. Unlike many other firms in the world, the ground-breaking façade modelling process brings the façade model to microscopic fabrication level – a completely different dimension from conventional CAD operation in the current industry.

1. U.S. Project I was placed as a part of the ACP Panel Fabrication team for this project. We mainly worked on creating the BIM Model for this project using Rhino and Grasshopper. I learnt a great deal about the functions and components of Grasshopper through this project.

2. Sohar Bank The project is based in Sohar, Oman. This structure is designed by the famous architect, Santiago Calatrava. I had to fix the catwalk designed in the facade due to minor changes in the dimensions. I worked using Rhino and had to use videos provided by my mentor in order to follow correct procedure.

30

3. Grand Hotel This is a hotel located in Pakistan and the company was assigned on creating a faรงade for this project. I was assigned to learn the advantages using a foam concrete compared to using conventional masonry. Then I was assigned to create an optimization report that could be shown to the clients for this project. The report had to contain images and graphs relevant to the use of these building materials. The graphs had to display information provided in a visual manner that would provide a quick understanding.

4. Murray Road, Hong Kong I was assigned to assist with the shop drawings for this project. My task consisted of using the polyline command and creating 3D profiles of Die details. Die profiles are the details being used in this project. I was provided with an AutoCAD file that could be used for measurement as accuracy is extremely important. I traced these profiles on Rhino. This work was extremely meticulous and had to be carefully done as the measurements are very accurate and could affect the overall project. I was assigned two supervisors for the task and given 5 pages of profiles that needed to be made.

5. Doha Canopy The tasks assigned to me during this project were last minute touch-ups to the working drawings of sections and elevations of the design. The working drawings include minute details about materials and other profiles used in the building. My task was to annotate all materials and objects and place them in a manner that did not disturb or inconvenience the viewing of the sectional details.
