Realism and Fantasy What is this skill? Understanding realism and fantasy helps a reader determine if what they are reading is real or make-believe. There are two kinds of made-up stories – those that could really happen and those that could never happen. Why is this important? Good readers look for clues that tell them whether a story could really happen or if it is make-believe. It helps readers understand the story or text better.
