Starting out a new year usually comes with good intentions to make positive changes in ourselves. Most common are the New Year‘s resolutions to lose weight, get in shape, and eat healthier. So often, though, the good intentions fall short because of our hustle and bustle lifestyles. Many feel like there is no time to invest in their health because of the busyness of day-to-day living. It is easy to put your health on the back burner when there are so many distractions. But that doesn’t need to be the case –

From The Editor Kim Thomas Some people are innately altruistic, and when a group of like-minded people come together and decide to lead efforts to support charities, magic happens. Four such women who were all volunteering with Make A Wish in Tampa decided they wanted to find a way to help the people right in their own community. So, in 2008, with hearts of gold, Kathi Givens, Rose Chervitz, Karen Levine, all from Palm Harbor, and Carol Wood of Lutz, formed 4 Hearts, an organization that isn’t for any specific charity; rather, 4 Hearts raises funds for many local charities. 4 Hearts is a member of The Champions Fund, Inc., a 501c 3 taxexempt organization. “We were volunteering in Tampa but we all live on this side of the Bay so we wanted to host events here,” says Rose. “We are very grassroots. If we read in the paper that there is a shortage of school supplies, we act right away.” The women had the idea to develop an “Email Life Tree” so

that when a need arose in their community, they could easily contact everyone by sending out mass emails. Rose explains, “We know that most everyone wants to volunteer and help out but people are very busy, so if we make it easy for the community to help, so many people will participate.” Last winter, when we had a lasting cold snap – something many in our part of Florida aren’t prepared for – 4 Hearts went into action. “The Shepherd Center was short on coats at the time,” says Rose. “We recognized an immediate need and sent out an email blast asking everyone on the email tree to donate unused coats.” The email worked and 4 Hearts was able to help a lot people to stay warm last winter. Most recently, the group, which has grown from the original four, organized the 4th Hearts of Gold fundraiser which was a huge success and benefited the Shepherd’s Center in Tarpon Springs, the Homeless Emergency Project, Living in Faith and the Temple Ahavat Shalom. Went-

worth Country Club donated the space for the event which was very successful and a fun time for all participants with entertainment by Palm Harbor University High School’s chorus. Since the first Hearts of Gold fundraiser, proceeds have more than doubled. In November and December, 4 Hearts was busy with a food drive and will distribute well over 200 holiday dinners to needy families. In honor of National Wear Red Day on February 3, promoting women’s heart health awareness, the ladies are organizing volunteers to work at various locations throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. 4 Hearts continues to grow and help more and more local charities. The biggest fundraising event is coming on May 4th when the 4 Hearts Golf Tournament will be held at Cypress Run Golf Club. If you’d like to volunteer, donate or find out more information about 4 Hearts, email Carol@4-Hearts.org or visit www.4-Hearts.org.

Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation Institute: Because Age is Merely a State-of-Mind! By Matt Selby Every year millions of Americans start the New Year with one goal in mind – to lose weight, get healthy, and ultimately feel better. If this sounds like you, Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation Institute (AARI) will not only help you make this goal a reality, but they can even help to reverse the aging process and make you look and feel youthful. With modern science and nutrition, age isn’t just a number; it’s truly all about how you feel! Dr. Richard Tantillo is a licensed Chiropractor and the owner of AARI. He has a very personable staff that makes all of their patients feel comfortable, stress-free, and right at home. The practice is multi-disciplinary with the Anti-Aging & Rejuvenation Institute. Scott Murphy, PAC, PhD, oversees all of the anti-aging and nutritional procedures with Thomas Carpenter, D.O. serving as the Medical Director.

Medical Weight Loss Utilizing HCG Medical weight loss is a huge topic of discussion these days. With so many different medical weight loss programs out there, it is important to understand why and how a method works. The medical weight loss method utilized by AARI involves sub-lingual HCG or HCG injections. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. This is the hormone a women’s body makes when pregnant. HCG helps the body to release stored fat which is difficult to lose with diet modification and exercise. The resulting weight loss can be significant, from ¾ of a pound to 1 ½ pounds per

10

day. It is important to note that the patient must be on a low calorie diet and prior to going on the program there is a consultation and examination with the physician’s assistant, Scott Murphy. What HCG does is simple – it unlocks all those abnormal fat reserves in our bodies that are normally inaccessible with normal diet and exercise. The 28-day program is only $159! This is a New Year’s Resolution promotion for weight loss support and available through the end of January 2012. ! The program includes an initial physical exam with a complete history, review of the program with face-to-face instruction, weekly follow ups (4 visits which include weight, vital signs, measurements of nine different places on the body, body fat %, h2O %, and bone density) and of course the HCG kit. HCG injections are done subcutaneously, which means under the skin, with an insulin type needle. The pain factor is minimal, comparable to plucking an eyebrow; most of the time you can’t even feel the tiny needle go in. During the first two days on the program you can eat pretty normal, but you want to stay away from the bad fats. On the third day you will limit caloric intake to 500 calories. Most patients lose 3/4 - 1 pound per day. After the 28-day program is complete the patient may begin the Trim 20/30 program. This is a program that can help you lose up to an additional 20 pounds in 30 days while increasing your caloric intake up to 1,800 calories a day. By following the specially designed rapid leaning program you can continue to lose any additional needed pounds as you

continue on the road to a slimmer more trim you and living your new healthy lifestyle. Anti-aging is one of the most exciting developments in medicine today and now you can receive quality care in a safe and comfortable environment, right here in your own backyard. At AARI, supporting your immune system so your body can better and more effectively combat disease is their main focus. Anti-aging is not just for the ill or elderly anymore. As a professional athlete, I personally go to AARI for the IV nutrition and I am a 23-yearold athlete trying to be in the best health possible. A patient can begin any of anti-aging programs at any age. This is the first year that Baby Boomers turn 65 years old, and living a healthy and productive life is paramount to their future plans. Personally, I believe if I start right now, in 10-20 years I will feels as great as I do now! The umbrella of anti-aging falls

under a few different procedures and programs including IV nutrition, chelation, and hormone therapy.

IV Nutrition The IV nutrition program consists of what is known as the ‘modified Myers cocktail’ and helps support the body’s immune system so that you can better combat symptoms of fatigue, asthma, migraine headaches and fibromyalgia, just to name a few. Dr. Myers’ research centers on nutrition to build our immune systems and the result is an increased ability to address disease states. Your custom IV nutrition program will be specifically designed for each patient according to their needs. After undergoing an exam you will have a BIO-Meridian test. This non-invasive test can identify 15

body systems (i.e.: respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, etc.) that are under stress from lack of proper nutritional support. The doctor is made aware of what nutrients each patient is deficient in and forms a unique formula specific to the individual’s needs. It doesn't matter if you are an athlete trying to be on top of your game or just trying to be in tip-top health, IV nutrition can benefit you.

Chelation Chelation is a detoxification that addresses heavy metal toxicity using a chemical process involving EDTA.

Therapy consists of repeated administrations of a weak amino acid (EDTA, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid), that binds to heavy metals and allows you to excrete those heavy metals in a safe and efficacious manner. The chemical process of chelation binds metals or minerals such as mercury, aluminum, copper, iron, arsenic, to name a few, and then excretes them when you urinate. Chelation is a heavy metal detoxification program that has been used for decades. Candidates for the program must first be tested for heavy metal toxicity. Once testing positive, a protocol is followed and the candidate can expect to have a series of infusions to clear the system. Remember, even healthy foods such as fish have mercury. Detoxifying the impurities that are present in our environment, including from our foods, water, air and even silver fillings in our teeth, can give patient’s the opportunity to improve their likelihood of a healthier quality of life!

Hormone Replacement Therapy Hormonal support and therapy for men and women is familiar to nearly all Americans today, especially

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

as we age. Normal healthy testosterone levels for men range and should be evaluated so they can be optimized. Relatively low doses of testosterone can be administered via injections, sub-lingual, or even topically. Hormonal balance can help you regain that more youthful you and like all programs at AARI, begins with a consultation, an examination, laboratory testing, program administration, and follow-up monitoring. As women age and become perimenopausal and eventually enter those menopausal years, it is important to evaluate their hormonal levels (such as estrogen and testosterone) and then optimize and balance their body as symptoms approach. After a consultation and review, typically a saliva test is ordered, in addition to normal blood work. The use of natural, non-synthetic, bio-identical hormones can then safely and effectively be used to address women’s menopausal symptoms. You don't have to change your life overnight, but steady, gradual changes in nutrition and lifestyle can make a world of difference. The staff at Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation Institute will treat you with warmth and

BergHOFF, Where Design and Functionality Meet in the Kitchen By Julie Kanehl BergHOFF International, Inc. marries the latest technology and functionality with award-winning design and quality in each of its products. Born in Belgium in 1964, BergHOFF began distributing its fine products to high-end stores like Crate & Barrel and Neiman Marcus in 1994 as a wholesale company. Since then, BergHOFF has expanded to have a strong brand presence in over 57 countries, and their product line has grown to include more than 3,000 beautiful items aimed at making the preparation of food safe, healthy, and fun. In 2006, Owners Raymond and Deborah Van Den Langenbergh moved to the Odessa/Trinity area to house their North American headquarters, and their new location was designed to be the distribution point for all BergHOFF products that went to stores in North America, South America, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2008, they wanted to create a showroom where they could meet with the companies that bought and sold BergHOFF products and started expanding. However, as they did so, they were surprised to find local residents knocking on the door, asking if they could come in and buy BergHOFF’s products directly. While this had never been done before in BergHOFF history, Raymond and Deborah decided to give it a chance. For people who can appreciate the kind of products that BergHOFF offers, having the opportunity to buy from them directly instead of having to shop through a third-party store is a great value. Since they opened their doors, and hung their bright “Open to the Public” sign out front, local customers have been enjoying the opportunity to buy some of the best culinary products in the world at affordable prices, right here in our back yard. If you are unfamiliar with BergHOFF, you will be impressed with the company’s dedication to its product. Offering an almost unheardof lifetime guarantee, BergHOFF’s products are the first choice of many chefs around the world. Known for their European design, ergonomic shapes, and technologically advanced

materials, BergHOFF creates its products with the cook in mind. BergHOFF now sells cookware, flatware, knives, porcelain, crystal, electrical devices and accessories. BergHOFF prides itself on allowing one item to do many things. Some of their most popular pots, for example, have removable lids that hold spoons, can drain out of both sides and in two different sizes, and come in a variety of beautiful colors. Made of only the finest materials, BergHOFF spends a lot of time creating energy efficient, long-lasting products. Whether you like traditional stainless steel, or prefer to use ceramic or cast iron, there is a wide variety to choose from. For the chef looking to eat healthier, waterless cookware is now available that reduces the need for using water or oil when cooking, creating a more energy efficient and cleaner way to dine. Some of their cookware is made of a material called 18/10 (T304) surgical stainless steel. This material is actually made up of more than 50 different compositions including at least 18% of chromium and 10% nickel. This six-layer (constructed of 24 elements) composite is one of the finest alloys used worldwide in the culinary industry. All of this technology is designed to properly conduct heat in your cookware, guaranteeing faster heat conduction and energy savings. This cookware is made for cooking on virtually any kind of stove, even induction heating sources, without warping. BergHOFF also sells induction stoves, which provide a more energy efficient way of cooking because they heat the cookware directly, as opposed to a traditional stove which has to spend the energy to heat the coil, which then heats the cookware, which heats the food. It all sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but really, BergHOFF knows exactly what they’re doing, and better yet, they know how to explain it to the rest of us. Until recently, BergHOFF had been a Swarovski dealer, and during that time Deborah learned about one of the designers who worked for Swarovski and who designed some of their beautiful jewelry. His name was Rodrigo Otazu, and now Rodrigo has his own line of jewelry that he makes using semi-precious metals and Swarovski crystals. Known for its bold, fearless style, Otazu’s jewelry designs appeared in the movie “Sex in the City 2” and have been seen on Tyra Banks, Britney Spears, Lucy Liu, Madonna, Aretha Franklin and even Lady Gaga. Also featured in many editorial spreads in magazines such as Vogue, In Style and Elle, Otazu’s jewelry is up and coming, and will be offered right here at BergHOFF. Dr. Galeano Is Dedicated To Creating Your Best Smile By Julie Kanehl When choosing an orthodontist for your child or for yourself, it is important to choose someone who is educated, experienced and dedicated to the wellbeing of their patients. Fernando Galeano, D.D.S., M.S.D., is all of those things and more. Located in the Cypress Professional Center, just off of Tampa Rd. in Oldsmar, Dr. Galeano’s office is just a short drive from Palm Harbor, East Lake, and Westchase.

Meeting Dr. Galeano Dr. Galeano earned both his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and his Master of Science in Dentistry at the Temple University Dental School in Philadelphia, PA in 1989. He is the third generation in his family to be involved in dentistry, so you could definitely say that improving smiles is in Dr. Galeano’s blood. He puts his patients and their families first, and believes in really spending the time to get to know them. He has worked in this area for over 20 years, and after being part of a larger group practice for

many years, he opened his first practice in 2002 in Tampa near USF. In 2006 he opened up this new location and has enjoyed building this practice from scratch. “I really enjoy the hands-on aspect of working with patients. I enjoy talking to my patients and their parents and giving them my undivided attention,” says Dr. Galeano. Dr. Galeano, who was born and raised in Honduras and is fluent in Spanish, is a family man. Married for 16 years to his lovely wife, Claudia, he is the father of two teenagers, so he completely understands all sides of the equation when it comes to kids and orthodontics. The importance of a beautiful and healthy smile is an affordable investment that continues to pay off for the rest of a person’s life, and more than that, when teeth are aligned properly, they perform the way that they are supposed to, preventing pain and problems down the road. Having a beautiful smile is important for more than aesthetic reasons. Teeth that are not overly crowded are easier to clean, floss and take care of.

Kerry Raynor says, "My daughter Megan is a patient. What I love about him is that he sees her personally and he adjusts her braces, instead of her getting an assistant or technician. My daughter needed headgear because of an overbite, and now her smile is so beautiful. There's been such a huge difference in her smile. We’ve been thrilled. He’s so warm and so good, and there’s never been any pain, and she is very happy with the results.” Fernando Galeano, D.D.S, M.S.D Dr. Galeano is committed to continuing his education so that he is up on the latest technology in his field, and he is a member of many organizations within his field including: The American Dental Association, Florida Association of Orthodontists, Hillsborough County Dental Association, Pinellas County Dental Association, West Coast District Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, Southern Association of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists and the World Federation of Orthodontists.

Treatment for Children and Young Adults Dr. Galeano offers free consultations for his patients, and sees patients of all ages. After all, it’s never too late to improve your smile, but most of his patients are children and young adults. The American Association of Orthodontists actually recommends that children come in for their initial screening appointment around 7 or 8 years of age. This is a free screening that helps Dr. Galeano to make a plan that is personalized for each child. Dr. Galeano says, “The first permanent molars come in at that time

and it’s important to have a screening to see what is happening and to see if there are any problems that can be intercepted.” Interceptive Treatment can be done on children who have a crossbite, or who have had a thumb-sucking habit that affected their teeth, or who have severe crowding. Just like anything else medical, when you catch things like this early, they are easier to treat. Dr. Galeano sometimes applies braces during this part of the treatment plan, but most of the time he uses apparatuses and orthodontic appliances to address any problems. Normally, Dr. Galeano recommends that girls begin getting braces between the ages of 9-11, and boys between the ages of 10-12 when most of their molars have come in. The reason to begin early, he says, is because while a patient is still growing, a good orthodontist can use the growth to their advantage and guide the teeth along into the right place. Braces come in a wide variety of styles, but the goal is the same. Whether you are looking for traditional metal braces, gold braces, ceramic braces (with clear brackets), or Invisalign braces, Dr. Galeano can as-

sess your child’s orthodontic needs and provide a treatment that is effective and affordable. The average full orthodontic treatment lasts two years, and Dr. Galeano’s practice accepts most Dental PPO plans, and he offers an interestfree finance program that allows the treatment to be broken up into affordable payments. “Whenever possible, I try to help parents out and keep the cost down,” says Dr. Galeano.

Adult Treatment It is never too late to improve your smile. Many adults who did not have the opportunity to have braces when they were young are finding that a beautiful smile increases their self-esteem as well as their overall oral health. Invisalign is a system of clear trays that align your teeth over a period of time, and they are very popular with adults who want to improve their smile without having the appearance of wearing braces. During the initial examination, Dr. Galeano would take x-rays and look at the patient’s overall dental health to assess the best plan of action.

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

One thing is for sure, regardless of your age, Dr. Galeano and his staff will make you feel welcome, make sure you are comfortable and educated about each step of the process, and make sure you are smiling ear-toear when your orthodontic treatment is complete. A beautiful smile is an investment that continues to pay off for years and years to come, so why wait? Come in and see Dr. Galeano for a complimentary consultation right away.

The Cleaning Angel Celebrates 20 Years of Cleaning Excellence Twenty years ago an angel started in the cleaning business. Donna Ferrante, who we now know as the owner of The Cleaning Angel, started cleaning for an elderly woman who was receiving Hospice care back in the 1990s. As a single mother, Donna was cleaning to earn extra money as a second job, but it quickly became clear to both her and her clients that caring for people’s houses was her purpose, a way to make others feel good about their surroundings. Donna was crowned the cleaning angel by the elderly woman she bonded with who she was cleaning for, after she left a crystal angel for her one day when she cleaned. The woman told her caretaker that Donna was her cleaning angel, and shortly after passed away. All these years later, Donna was still emotional as she told me the story, but feels blessed for the client who provided the foundation for her current thriving business, and knows she would be proud of where The Cleaning Angel is now. Donna was born and raised in a small town in the white mountains of New Hampshire called Gorham. Being half Italian and half French Canadian, she was raised in her small community to be a hard worker, honest and dependable. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs. Back home in New Hampshire her family has owned an Italian restaurant for over 65 years, now going into a fifth generation. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. My mother and my grandmother taught me to reach out to people and give from my heart and the feeling that you get back is more than money can buy, and that is more important than anything. I am proud and

honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to the business.” In addition to her family’s influence, Donna attributes the success of her company to a determined attitude, a tremendous amount of ambition and meticulous attention to detail, which is accompanied by an unstoppable drive. An example of this drive was when after years of working on her own, she broke her ankle and hand in an accident. Donna knew she couldn’t continue cleaning on her own, and prayed for the future of her business. She didn’t let this change in her life ruin her business, but instead turned into a blessing, by making the decision to hire her first “angel.” This decision, and her determination, helped to expand Donna’s business to what it is today. The Cleaning Angel’s staff is considered by Donna to be part of her family, and happy “angels” means happy clients. Ileah, who has worked for Cleaning Angels for five years, supervises and trains the employees. Because of her continued hard work Donna gave her family a full paid trip to Disney as a bonus. When another one of the “angels” found they were losing their home due to no fault of their own, Donna found her and her children a new home, and paid for the deposits on her new home. Another “angel” Sandy delivered presents to the children at Christmas time on behalf of The Cleaning Angel’s staff. When one of the “angels” needed to make extra money and worked six days a week for four months straight, all with a smile on her face, Donna showed her gratitude by giving her an extra bonus. Donna explains that when

someone from The Cleaning Angel comes to clean your house, they know their hard work is appreciated and rewarded, which means you’ll consistently get a thorough cleaning that won’t disappoint you. Comment cards are used for communication from the customer to Donna to make sure the job was done correctly also help ensure customers are not only happy with the first cleaning, but every cleaning with The Cleaning Angel. I first met Donna when I was put on bed rest, and needed help keeping my house clean. I needed temporary help just for a couple of months. The Cleaning Angels were able to accommodate me in their schedule during that time, and I was happy to have a clean house without having to sign a cleaning contract. They were truly there for my family when we needed them. Robin and Christine formed The Cleaning Angels team that kept my house pristinely clean. They pay attention to details, such as dusting the blinds, and making the hardwood floors looks like they are brand new. Hard water stains are no match for these girls either. They have the correct cleansers to make the bathroom tiles sparkle. Each time they left my house it not only looked clean, it smelled clean, and healthy.

Donna isn’t just an angel to her customers and staff, but also to the community. For years she has chosen a child in need from the Christmas Angel Tree and provided them with gifts. This year, to celebrate 20 years in business, The Cleaning Angel will donate part of the proceeds from all new customers towards the Christmas Angel Tree program. If you would like more information about the Angel Tree you can contact social service director, Jeanne Coulter at 847-6321, ext. 101. Donna’s existing customers who would like to donate to the program can contact her at 942-8289. For 20 years Donna Ferrante has been building her business and reputation in the area as being a hard worker who’s not afraid to use a little elbow grease. Let her angels put their hard work to work for you. “After 20 years of being here in Florida, I am thankful for my blessings: a wonderful family, my business, my customers and my cleaning angels, my health, my home and my future. I want to thank everyone in my life who has helped me to get where I am today. God Bless to all,” says Donna.
