From The Editor Alexis Selby For the past three years I have had the great pleasure of writing for the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles in their four magazines– Trinity, East Lake, Odessa/ Lutz/ Land O’ Lakes, and Westchase, and would like to share with you how excited my husband Matt Selby, the Carrollwood CoPublisher, and I are to bringing this publication to the Carrollwood Area. Original Publishers Tim and Doreen Selby, who just so happen to be my father-in-law and mother-inlaw, started the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles 20 years ago, and since then have expanded throughout the Tampa Bay Area with great success. Familyowned-and-operated, the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles staff consists entirely of family members and close friends, making for a welcoming, friendly environment that is both tight-knit and efficient. My husband and I are now proudly continuing their name and expanding to our newest community – Carrollwood! Here at the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles we take pride in delivering a quality community-oriented magazine that is personable and informative, designed in a way that everyone can enjoy. Writing has always been a passion of mine and throughout my years of university and experience working at the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles I have really learned to love all types and aspects of writing, especially that which communicates the knowledge and voices of others (Which is exactly what we do). When I, or one of my writers, write an article on a specific business in the community we are expressing, from our point of view and the view of the business owner, what

makes that business so unique and what they can contribute and offer to the area. Matt and I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and are thankful for the opportunity to go out and get to know local business owners in the community. Advertising in the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles is a terrific way for businesses to reach potential customers and clients in their local community and for readers to get a better understanding of the businesses who serve in their area. The Greater Carrollwood Area – Looking Back a Bit By Pam Sica Greetings all! My name is Pam Sica, correspondent for the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles’ newest arm – the Greater Carrollwood area. I’ve witnessed the transformation of this community over the past 26-plus years and would like to share a bit of its (and my personal) history with you. I landed this assignment through what one might call “reverse nepotism,” as my son, the Art Director for the Westchase and now the Greater Carrollwood editions, thought that I might be able to add some local flavor to the publication. I certainly look forward to the opportunity! My husband and I moved to Lake Magdalene, part of the Greater Carrollwood area in September of 1986, along with our two children, who were then ready for pre-school. We needed to find a sense of community, and more importantly, an easy access to our respective workplaces in the Westshore and Downtown districts. Luckily, we found both!

8

APRIL 2013

From a historic perspective, the Greater Carrollwood area was the result of an inspiration by a young man named Matt Jetton, who when as early as 1959, started building what is now known as “Original Carrollwood.” He attributed much of Carrollwood’s early success to the establishment of the University of South Florida four years earlier, just to the east. By the time we arrived, Carrollwood Village (on the west side of Dale Mabry Highway) and Lake Ellen Woods, Tarawood, Brentwood, Arlington, Hunter’s Lake, Reynoldswood, Lake Magdalene Estates and Cherry Creek (on the east side of Dale Mabry) were the established communities just north of Original Carrollwood, between Fletcher and Bearss Avenues. At that time, Dale Mabry Highway and I-275 were our “go-to” North/South arteries to get to work. Travel to the East or West out of the area was a little more problematic until Fletcher and Bearss Avenues were reengineered to provide a straight shot to I-275 from the Carrollwood area. Thinking back, Linebaugh Avenue used to be just the little winding road

Pam with her son Tony, who is now all grown up and currently the Art Director at the Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. you would take to get to the county dump, and, beyond that, to Town and Country. That is of course, before it was widened to handle the traffic flow anticipated from the build-out of the Westchase area in more recent years. Gunn Highway was a typical rural, meandering Florida road through “the boonies” that was perfect for Sunday drives! Suffice it to say, the expansion of these roads enabled communities like Citrus Park and Westchase (to the West) and Avila and Lutz (to the East) to flourish.

When the kids were little, it was relatively easy to accommodate everyone’s needs within our local area. There were competent private, local and corporate day-care providers available, restaurants that helped busy parents with dinner on demand and local parks and theaters within a short drive. One of our favorite restaurants back in the day (1988-2003) was Circles, which was just north of Handy Rd., across Dale Mabry Hwy. in the shopping plaza that currently houses Abby’s Health and Nutrition. The

The food was delicious and we always left with our kids’ newest “masterpieces” in tow. Circles came and went and just recently returned to the Carrollwood Village Shops to reestablish its early roots. That certainly brought a smile to our faces! We’ve watched numerous storefronts change hands over the years. Hops to Houlihan’s to Grillsmith (and maybe a few others in between). Our community can now boast of three

Publix Super Markets within a 3.5 mile stretch to service its constantly growing needs. (Disclaimer: I worked as a project/program manager for Publix Corporate in Lakeland for almost 20 years before retiring). Our needs as a family shifted over time; the kids grew up, changed schools, went to college and finally left home to start their own families. This community remains vibrant and offers many opportunities for personal growth. If you want to take some selfhelp classes, attend a local concert or dabble in the arts, consider contacting

What a difference a quarter of a century makes! the Carrollwood Cultural Center (CarrollwoodCenter.org, 813-2691310). Carrollwood and Lake Magdalene Elementary Schools can always use volunteers if you have the time and talent to work with kids. Carrollwood Elementary was established in 1962 to serve the rapid influx of families into the burgeoning community. The real eye-opener for me was to discover that Lake Magdalene Elementary’s main brick building, which is still in use today, was built in 1930, with its roots dating back to the turn of the century!

Unlike some newer and more transient communities, the Greater Carrollwood area remains a particularly stable one. One way to gauge this is to note how the real estate inventory remains low from year to year. Interestingly, when houses do go on the market, they are typically snapped up quickly. This is most definitely an area where you can lay down roots and genuinely feel like part of a thriving community. As far as I’m concerned, moving to the Greater Carrollwood area turned out to be the best decision our family could ever have made!

Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy By Matt Selby Our main focus at the Neighborhood News and Lifestyles is to bring the community something useful and informative while getting people excited about "buying local and shopping small!" When you shop small business your not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. Your helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table. A “mom and pop” business understands their customers are their shareholders and it's those customers they strive to make happy. In today’s rough economy, small local businesses are closing their doors on a daily basis, while many big corporate businesses still have the investors and financial backing to pull through. There is nothing wrong with national companies by any means, but by spending our money in locally owned businesses we can help our local economy flourish instead of decline.

10

APRIL 2013

When we spend money locally, we contribute to the wellbeing of the entire community. Local businesses build strong vibrant towns, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made by people who live in the community and thus, will feel the impact of each decision they make directly. Many local businesses recycle excess revenue by giving back to the community in which they live; which enriches the area and creates an even better place to live and love. Locally owned and operated businesses also create jobs and sometimes pay even better than the “big guys.” Competition is not a bad thing. A

marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and above all, low prices. For example, there are hundreds of restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next to each other. This is necessary in a thriving economy. Can you imagine if there was only one type of each business in each town? It would

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 or Visit NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

be a monopoly and the price of a monopolized product would be astronomical! Entrepreneurship is what fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity and serves as a key means for families to move out of a low paying job and into the middle and upper class. By spending money locally, we are putting money directly back into the community, therefore supporting your family, your neighbors and your friends.

Arry’s Roofing Services Shares the Advantages of Owning a Metal Roof By Katie Thomas James "Arry" Housh has been actively involved in the roofing company for thirty years. Alongside his wife Becky Housh and with the help of their two sons Stephen and Matthew, he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing, a company dedicated to providing quality craftsmanship and exceptional customer service. The Housh family's dedication has enabled Arry's Roofing to expand their small, honorable and trustworthy family-run business into the well-known and trusted company it is today; servicing residential, commercial and industrial projects with value and integrity. I recently spoke to Matt regarding metal roofing and the benefits it provides homeowners. Arry’s Roofing fully supports the advantages of metal roofing and is a specialist in metal roofing. Additionally, Arry’s in-house custom sheet metal shop allows the metal roofing specialists to customize your roof to be an exact fit for your house and your designs. Matt says, “Metal roofing is more of a craftsmanship and an art, similar to tile. In the early 2000s we saw the advantages of metal roofing and started our metal roofing shop, trained our guys specifically in metal roofing and began to create a reputation of being metal roofing specialists.”

Metal Advantages: Metal roofing is known to be initially more expensive than other roofing types at first glance, but in the long run metal roofing can save homeowners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increase the resale value of your home. Matt explains that the average lifespan of a non-metal roof is seventeen years; whereas metal roofing is proven to last 2-3 times longer with fewer repairs than other types of roofing materials. When installed by qualified and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than 50 years with little maintenance. Matt adds that

a metal roof is extremely beneficial, especially in Florida, because there is no other roof composite that is as strong and as durable as a metal roof, which if installed properly can effectively withstand the harsh Florida winds and storms. If you are a homeowner and are seeking out a way to reduce the price of your energy bill and would like to build a roof with energy-saving material, Arry’s Roofing recommends you look into getting a metal roof. Metal roofing is economically sustainable and better for the environment than many traditional types of materials, such as petroleum-based shingles. The installation of reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40 percent in cooling costs. Arry's Roofing is proactive and innovative, keeping up to date in the industry by furthering their education regularly. Matt says, “We use new products that are safe. By keeping on top of what is offered, we are able to bring our customers cleaner, better and safer products." The company has all the knowledge necessary to help you find the right metal roof that will not only look beautiful on your home, but will also be an asset in saving money and cutting energy costs. Arry’s Roofing has answers to any questions regarding the advantages of metal roofing and is

prepared to help you make the best decisions regarding your home’s roof. Dale S. from Dunedin writes, “I am very satisfied with the quality and workmanship of the installation. Arry’s crew performed above-and-beyond what was expected. I appreciate all of the extra work that they did. Thanks Arry’s Roofing!”

honesty, quality workmanship and customer service. Arry's Roofing is highly recommended and has won multiple awards in the categories of Consumer Protection Excellence, Installation Excellence and Training Excellence! Arry's Roofing is certified by GAF-ELK's MasterElite Contract Program; the only certification program of its kind for residential roofing. Only the top two percent of roofing contractors in the U.S. achieve MasterElite status. Arry’s Roofing is a fully insured, state-licensed roofing contractor. Guaranteeing all work, Arry's has an array of roofing warranties for customers that include a 50-year material defects and 20-year contractor's workmanship Golden Pledge Limited Warranty offered through GAF-ELK MasterElite Contractors. Arry's Roofing also has a Workmanship Guarantee, separate from the manufacturers' warranties, that covers any repairs due to faulty workmanship to the roof applied for up to 20 years. "My goal in business is to promote quality in workmanship and relationships,” says Arry. "Once we perform

work we stay in touch with our referral program. If our customers refer someone to us with a potential need, we compensate them with a gift card and discount any work for the potential customer." Arry's Roofing takes pride in their way of doing business – with integrity, honesty, hard work and customer loyalty. Big Cat Rescue - Tampa Bay’s Best Kept Secret By Willow Hecht Across from the Citrus Park Mall in Tampa is a little dirt road leading back into the woods. This is Easy Street, and it ends at one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in the world, Big Cat Rescue. About 135 unwanted, abused, and neglected exotic cats live at the sanctuary in large outdoor enclosures. Fifteen species of cat call BCR home, the most variety of any facility in the world. They range from the tiny 4 lb. Geoffroy’s cat to an 800 lb. tiger, and include bobcats, lynx, leopards, cougars, and lions. Most were former pets, and others were rescued from fur farms, circuses, roadside zoos, and backyard breeding facilities. The sanctuary, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit charity, has a two-part mission: 1) to house and care for the cats for the rest of their lives, and 2) to educate the public about issues facing cats in captivity and in the wild. BCR is actively trying to change state and federal laws governing the ownership of and contact with exotic cats. They also have a commitment to ending the trade in exotic cats and their parts. The sanctuary is completely hands-off,

and does not breed, buy, sell, or trade cats. Situated on 45 acres of beautiful woods with a lake in the middle, the refuge is truly a place of peace and safety. Daily animal care, administration, maintenance, and guest relations are done by a volunteer force of nearly 100, as well as eight paid staff. Big Cat Rescue was founded in 1992, almost by accident. BCR’s founder, Carole Baskin, answered an ad in the newspaper advertising bobcat kittens for sale. At the time, she didn’t know that exotic cats make terrible pets, and thought she’d like to have one. When she arrived at the specified address, she found fifty-six bobcat and lynx kittens in tiny, filthy cages. She was told that the place was actually a fur farm, and that the kittens would be slaughtered at one year of age and turned into fur coats. Horrified, she bought all fifty-six kittens and brought them to her home in Tampa. Word of mouth spread that Baskin would take big cats, and she began to devote all of her time to rescues and cat care. Over time, cages were built on the current 45-acre property Baskin acquired in a foreclosure, once a landfill. The mission of the sanctuary and many of its policies have evolved over time into the world-class facility that exists today, accredited by the USDA and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Many of the cats besides the original fifty-six endured horrific conditions before their rescue. Cheetaro, an Asian leopard, was confined to a corn crib for the first five years of his life, constantly breeding cubs for the pet trade with his mate. They had little shelter from subzero New England winter temperatures. Joseph and Sasha, a male and female lion, were used as photo props, and had their claws and canine teeth removed so

Armani the Leopard they could be chained down and handled by guests. When they came to BCR, Sasha had a collar which had become embedded in her skin and had to be cut away. Sophia, an 18-year old cougar, lived in a chicken coop for 13 years and was suffering from fleas, renal disease, and a botched declaw surgery when she was rescued. All of these cats now have a permanent, safe, and quiet home with toys, good food, and medical care. Visitors to the refuge are allowed for guided tours only. Tours for those over age 10 are an hour and a half long, and are offered every day except Thursday. Children’s tours, for those under age 10, are Saturday at 9am

“Welcome” Continued from page 1 target market, allowing them to reach their goals as a successful business. Read on to discover what some of our long-time advertisers from sister papers Trinity Area Neighborhood News, East Lake Area Neighborhood News, Odessa/ Lutz/ Land O’ Lakes Area Neighborhood News and Westchase Area Neighborhood News have to say about us. We have received a fantastic response from many of our long-time advertisers and many new businesses who are now advertising – Thank You!

What Our Advertisers Say Over the years we have covered several events hosted at Landon Plastic Surgery in Trinity. Cheryl Landon, of Landon Plastic Surgery and The Spa Boutique, writes, “We have been advertising in the Neighborhood News in three separate areas (East Lake, Trinity and Odessa/ Lutz / Land O’ Lakes) over the past eight years. The paper has been vital in helping to establish and maintain our practice’s identity in the community.” “I have advertised my orthodontics practice with Trinity Area Neighborhood News from almost the beginning of circulation,” states Dr. Jeremy Albert of Albert Family Orthodontics. “To me, it’s not only a great paper to read to know what is going on in the community I practice in, but it’s also a great way to reach new potential patients in our community. The staff is great to work with and they help me design attractive advertising that works. It is advertising that is worth it.” Mark Camacho, of Flex One Trinity, writes “I have been advertising with the Neighborhood News since I opened my personal training facility in August 2007. I have never missed an

issue in the Trinity paper and I have also placed ads in their East Lake Edition a number of times. I always found the paper to be very informative as a reader, even before I opened my business. It has a very local feed to it, with its restaurant and business reviews, as well as local happenings in the community. The full color ads draw lots of attention and the creativity of the ad department is second to none. I owe many thanks to all the staff at the Neighborhood News for spreading the word about my business and attracting a great clientele through my door!” “We have been open about two and a half years now and we have tried every publication around and the best results by far we have gotten are with the Neighborhood News,” states James Maggiolo, owner of Odessa Anytime Fitness. “We are very pleased with the Neighborhood News. Our phones calls went up 25 to 30 percent after our first article came out. We are extremely happy. They are the only publication we deal with now and the only publication we feel we need to deal with.” Angela Johnson, former owner of Angela’s Pizza in Odessa, says, “The first month I started advertising, every person that walked through my doors mentioned my ad and I completely sold out of food within three days. It was unbelievable. I immediately got on the phone with my rep from food delivery and had to have an emergency shipment delivered. I am very, very pleased with my results.” Charles and Ross Kohler, owners of Candlelight Kitchens, state, “Advertising in the Neighborhood News was just a boom for us. We got so many leads, it was incredible. We had friends coming up to us out of the blue saying they saw us in the magazine and this was four or five months down the road, so it’s not like it just came out. People were reading it for months and

months. For over five months we still had people coming up to us saying they saw us in the magazine. We also had customers we were already dealing with that were waiting to make a decision saying that they saw the article on our company and went ahead and signed up. It has been a very successful publication for us. We are really happy.” Throughout our 5 magazines we have hundreds of advertisers, each marketing something different and unique, yet all with one thing in common- they have achieved success and exceptional results by using the Neighborhood News and Lifestyles.
