The Beauty and Health Institute in Westchase has been instrumental in helping people throughout the area to improve their lives. When Joyce Bhutta’s daughters entered elementary school, she decided it was time to go back to work. However, she had a difficult time finding a career that was both interesting and flexible. After working at several different businesses in the area she knew it was time to search for something more than just a job; the Beauty and Health Institute helped her do just that. Now, four years later, Joyce is the owner of Perfectly Bare Laser Therapy and has her own business and a career that allows her to have time for herself, her husband, and her daughters. “All of the instructors and staff at the Beauty and Health Institute were very helpful from my first day there,” says Joyce. “I was able to work classes around my schedule and had a new career after just three months. Everyone at the institute makes sure that their students get the support and education they need.”

“Performing Arts” Continued from page 3 Featuring 82 groups representing 23 states, the Junior Theater Festival is the world’s largest musical theater festival dedicated to celebrating young people experiencing the transformative power of musical theater and is presented by New York’s iTheatrics and Atlanta’s Theater of the Stars and is sponsored by Music Theatre International, Disney Musicals, Playbill, PRG (Production Resource Group) and Sound Associates. The festival will bring together more than 3,500 students, teachers, and Broadway professionals to raise their voices in celebration of on-stage and backstage excellence in musical theater. Each group attending the Junior Theater Festival performs a 15minute selection of a musical for a panel of distinguished theater professionals. The 14 students of Tampa Bay Performing Arts Academy (TBPAA), ages 8-14, will present Disney’s Mulan JR. for adjudication. The group presented the musical in its entirety on June 9, 2012 at the Catherine Hickman Theater in Gulfport, FL.

The group is active in their community and performs frequently. For the second time, TBPAA cast members were chosen to participate in Holiday Inc., an annual musical extravaganza held at Tampa’s Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Furthermore, TBPAA will present fulllength performances of two more Broadway JR. musicals this spring. (Details on these upcoming shows are in the section below titled “Upcoming Performances.”) The 2013 Junior Theater Festival offers an enthusiastic environment for students and teachers to interact with thousands of others who share their passion for musical theater. In addition to presenting a 15 minute selection from their musical, both students and teachers participate in interactive workshops led by Broadway and West End professionals, gain from professional development, enjoy theatrical fellowship and attend a world-class professional production at the fabulous Fox Theatre. In true Junior Theater Festival form, student techies work side-by-side with festival staff in running all aspects of the festival experience.

Student Mackenzie Nelson was invited to take part in an iTheatrics workshop of My Son Pinocchio JR. with Stephen Schwartz. TBPAA creates an enriching and educational experience for its students by involving parents and community volunteers in all aspects of production, including casting. To prevent TBPAA teachers and directors from being affected by any personal biases they may have for their students, a panel of 10 volunteer judges assists the directors with casting decisions. The panel uses the judging forms provided in the Music Theatre International materials and awards roles based on a point system. Directors and teachers spend 3-6 weeks teaching students how to audition, including the importance of working as a team prior to auditions. Roles are announced in the style of an awards show, with each cast member receiving an envelope with a personal card to commemorate their special part in the show. TBPAA students are committed to giving back to their community.

The group is currently working with Oak Grove Middle School to organize a special performance at the school to raise money for its library program. In addition to group appearances, many TPBAA students perform in other local productions and city- and county-related special events. Student Trey Milcowitz recently sang the national anthem at an annual event benefiting Miles for Hope, an organization that raises money to fight brain cancer, and Taylor Willis has performed at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center’s

community theater. The group works hard to raise money for their own productions as well. Among the fund-raisers planned for early 2013 are a car wash and a local talent showcase scheduled for February 23, 2013. Tampa Bay Children’s Theater is a t/b/a of the for-profit organization Nicola Productions Inc. Tampa Bay Performing Arts Academy is also a t/b/a of Nicola Production Inc.

Galeano Orthodontics – Where Beautiful Smiles are Created! By Kim Thomas When visiting Galeano Orthodontics, the first thing that you will notice upon meeting Fernando A. Galeano, DDS, MSD, is his genuine, friendly manner. He is open and conversational, but more importantly, he is experienced in providing top-notch orthodontic care with a personal commitment to knowing each of his patients. Galeano Orthodontics treats patients of every age and can help you attain the beautiful smile that you want. Dr. Galeano has two offices in the Tampa Bay area to better serve his patients. He practiced orthodontics at a specialty group practice in Clearwater before opening his private office in Tampa. In 2006 he opened an additional office in nearby Oldsmar; located just off of Tampa Road in the Cypress Professional Center, to provide his professional services to our community where he has resided since moving to Florida. Since opening his own practice in 2002, Dr. Galeano has been able to expand and continue to take on new patients, while managing his schedule to ensure that his patients will actually see him at every visit – something that he

10

considers vitally important in treating his patients. “I think it is very important that we are family-oriented,” says Dr. Galeano. “I definitely take time to get to know my patients on a personal level and I personally greet them and their parents at every appointment. I really do enjoy that part of my job – talking to my patients, both young and older kids and adults.” One patient’s mother, Maria Macho, says, “Dr. Galeano really cares about the children. He includes them in the conversation and explains everything to them. I think it is nice that he is very kind and is always thinking of the kids.” Galeano Orthodontics works with many local dentists who trust their patients’ orthodontic care to them, but also, the steady growth is due in large part to patient referrals. “The core of my practice is that it’s referral-based,” says Dr. Galeano. “It is through word-ofmouth shared by friends and families that has attributed to my practice growth, I am honored with the opportunity our patients provide me to care for their braces needs. Be assured that your friends and family referrals are treated with the same individual gentle care you expect.”

The professional and personable staff, along with affordable pricing, is what you will experience when you visit Galeano Orthodontics. “Every member of our treatment team is a certified dental assistant,”says Dr. Galeano. “My staff is very qualified, plus they are energetic, fun and warm towards our patients. It is always nice to work with caring people who will go that extra step to make you feel welcomed and I am very pleased with that.” Striving to stay abreast of the very latest technology by attending continuing education courses and seminars, Dr. Galeano and his staff do everything possible to ensure that patients receive the highest quality of patient care available. “The patients’ and parents’ involvement in all aspects of their orthodontic treatment is a top priority at my office,” says Dr. Galeano. “A thorough understanding of the proposed orthodontic treatment is essential for patient participation in order to achieve exceptional treatment results, I am always available to discuss treatment progress with my patients. Patient convenience is also important to us. We offer flexible hours and try to accommodate our patients’ busy schedules, and we can provide appointments within days of our patients’

initial calls. And we never make patients, new or current, wait to be seen.” Getting to Know Dr. Galeano Dentistry runs in the Galeano family. In fact, Dr. Galeano’s father is a dentist and two of his uncles are orthodontists back in Honduras where he grew up. Dr. Galeano received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and then obtained a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree in Oral Biology at Temple University Dental School, located in Philadelphia, PA, in 1989. Dr. Galeano is a member of the American Dental Association; the Florida Association of Orthodontists; West Coast District Dental Association; Florida Dental Association; Southern Association of Orthodontists; American Association of Orthodontists and the World Federation of Orthodontists. A family man, Dr. Galeano who is fluent in Spanish, has been happily married for 17 years to his lovely wife Claudia; with two children of their own, he knows firsthand how important it is to parents to know that their child is receiving the best possible care. “My wife Claudia and I are very happy here in Palm Harbor, and we can relate to all of

Galeano, nity provide DDS, MSD me to care for their children’s braces. You can be assured that we will do our best effort to provide your loved ones with personal care and always pledge to do everything in our patients best interest when they make the choice to walk through our door.” He also takes time out of his schedule to give back to the community when he can. In November, Dr. Galeano participated in the Great American Teach In at Forest Lakes Elementary and Oldsmar Elementary schools. Dr. Galeano supports his patients and local community by participating in the Adopt-AClass program, giving to local schools including Cypress Woods Elementary, Forest Lakes Elementary, Oldsmar Elementary, to name a few. In addition, he has supported the East Lake High School Softball team.

Early & Consistent Orthodontic Care For Best Results Orthodontic treatment can definitely improve the aesthetics of your smile and while a beautiful smile is always desirable, proper alignment of the teeth and jaw can actually prevent problems associated with a misaligned bite. The initial consultation at Galeano Orthodontics is complimentary. “At the initial assessment, I discuss with the parent their child's bite condition to determine if it is time for interceptive treatment or simply reassure them everything is fine,” says Dr. Galeano. “Age 7 is ideal for me to first see a child, just to see how things are doing. Most of the time, we just check every six months or yearly, depending on the patient needs we establish a personalized treatment sequence. Parents may think that they don’t need to have their child seen by an orthodontist until all of the primary ‘baby’ teeth are gone, but that’s not true. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children should have their initial orthodontic screening appointment at the age of seven.” At an early age, when the child’s jaws are still growing and even when they still have baby teeth, there are problems that an orthodontist can address and correct such as posterior and anterior cross bites, a thumb sucking

habit, abnormal ectopic eruption of the permanent molars or severely crowded teeth. Young ones are made to feel completely at ease at Galeano Orthodontics, so visiting the orthodontist is a pleasant experience. “I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Galeano,” says mom Kerry Raynor. “He made my daughter comfortable and was amazing with her. It was pain free because he is very gentle. It has made an amazing difference and at every appointment, she individually met with him, not just the assistant.” Typically children start their braces between ages nine and eleven before their growth is completed so Dr. Galeano can take advantage of their growth to correct developing jaw discrepancies. All types of braces are available from traditional metal, gold braces, ceramic (clear brackets) to Invisalign teen. “Our patients have fun choosing their color braces and ties at each appointment to match their personality style and be in tune with the holidays,” says Dr. Galeano. Adults are seeking orthodontic treatment more than ever, either because they weren’t provided with orthodontic care as children, or there is a need of teeth realignment to coordinate with restorative treatment with their dentists. “At Galeano Orthodontics we can pro-

vide them with that care now and they can have the beautiful smile they always wanted,” says Dr. Galeano. “At Galeano Orthodontics, it is our mission to provide you with high quality orthodontic treatment at affordable prices,” says Dr. Galeano. “Flexible financing with interest-free options are available, we do participate with most PPO insurances and work with our patients that do not have any insurance. Bring our Ad in this newsletter to receive the fee adjustment offered to get you started on your treatment. And, initial consultations are free.” Regardless of your age, Dr. Galeano and his staff will make you feel welcome, make sure you are comfortable and educated about each step of the process, and make sure you are smiling ear to ear when your orthodontic treatment is complete. A beautiful smile is an investment that continues to pay off for years to come, so why wait? Start the New Year with a complimentary consultation with Dr. Galeano. Galeano Orthodontics, located at 150 Pine Ave., N, Suite A, in the Cypress Professional Center of Oldsmar, is open Mon. and Wed., 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. (On Tues., Thurs. & Fri. Dr. Galeano is at his Tampa office). Call (813) 855-8505 to schedule an appointment. Visit GaleanoOrtho.com for additional information.

Lasting Impressions – A Natural, Effective Solution for Lasting Weight Loss By Katie Thomas Lasting Impressions Weight Loss was founded in December of 2011 by Conforti Chiropractic and Wellness Center. Since 1999, Carl Conforti, D.C., has been serving the community with exceptional care, problem solving and life enhancing techniques that have changed the lives of many. Lasting Impressions has proven to be a solution in weight loss that focuses on a natural, holistic approach; safe for your body and positively influential to individual wellbeing. Dr. Conforti opened Lasting Impressions Weight Loss in order to help patients who had failed in reaching their weight loss goals with yo-yo diets, shots and pills. He saw a need to help his patients find a new, stable and safe way to accomplish their health and weight loss goals. Lasting Impressions Weight Loss was designed by a unique team of doctors to fit customized programs to clients’ individual lifestyles in order to help them feel better, look better and most importantly, keep the weight

off! “Our team at Lasting Impressions trains you in a new way of life and what teaches the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle,” explains Dr. Conforti. “We are not about yo-yo dieting or harmful drugs. Our program at Lasting Impressions allows patients to eat normal food. There are no shakes or pre-made meals that need to be ordered. We advocate normal, healthy eating habits that ultimately lead to end results that last.” Dr. Conforti continuously updates his education and takes pride in learning new sciences that will help his patients change their lives permanently. As a graduate with a degree in health and nutrition, wellness is at the top of his demands and he strives to encompass the best ways for clients to receive the results they want. While attending a seminar with his team regarding the topic of ultimate healthy weight loss, he was able to receive the most insightful knowledge regarding the human body and the science behind weight loss. He began ap-

plying this science to his practice immediately and after awe-inspiring results, Lasting Impressions Weight Loss was born. Dr. Conforti explains that the Lasting Impressions Weight Loss program focuses on how to naturally detox your body, teaches clients the five deadly foods that should never be eaten, After Before offers secret lifestyle changes that allow the Jennifer Hoffman lost 40 pounds on the loss of up to three Lasting Impressions Weight Loss Program pounds a day, helps clients avoid yo-yo diLasting Impression works fast and eting and offers advice on how to stay is proven to be a healthy solution. positive and never become flustered Many people have tried yo-yo diets, with your weight loss journey to a dietary stimulants and shots to lose healthier lifestyle. “On average guys weight. Before Dr. Turner reached his goal weight loss in 30 days weighing more than when they started. At Lasting Impressions, the ultimate goal is to help clients get the weight off and keep it off in a healthy, safe way. Doctors Choose Lasting Impressions “Throughout my life, my weight has been an issue I struggle with daily,” shares Dr. Gialousis. “I have tried countless diets and weight loss pills with no real results, just an empty stomach and usually a fast heart rate. It was for these reasons that I was extremely skeptical when Dr. Conforti came to me with a program that he was developing. His program was unlike any product on the market, assessing all aspects of human fat loss and

capitalizing on the strengths of each. This whole system approach interested me, so I volunteered to be one of the initial candidates. The results were staggering. In roughly six weeks’ time I had lost just over fifty pounds of fat, not weight, and have managed to keep it off with little effort for the last four months. Never in my life have I had so much energy, yet the program employs no stimulant of any kind. All of the products utilized in this program have side effects that actually benefit your body, which only compliment the fat loss. As a physician I would highly recommend this whole system approach to fat loss to any of my patients, or anyone for that matter, for their health and happiness.”

Dr. Turner also shares his experience. “On January 3rd [of 2012] I weighed in at 232.2 lbs. I, like many others, had become so busy with life (work, friends, family, young children, etc.) that I neglected myself. Slowly over 10 years I had gained approximately 40 lbs. I was easily tired and fatigued. I didn’t want to take my shirt off at the beach when playing with my children. I had a real sadness over what had changed in my body and the toll it took on my selfesteem. I was ready to begin! By February 2nd, I had reached my goal weight plus some and was done with the dieting portion of the plan. When I began, 30 days prior, I had no idea how well this would work and how easy it would be. I felt great, and my 6-year-old son told me he could see my muscles. The program caused me to lose fat, learn a healthier way to live, how to balance my diet, and I got myself back!” Client Jennifer Hoffman says, “I had the opportunity to lose 40 lbs. with Lasting Impressions! This is the best program I have ever done! It completely changed my life. I learned how to eat well, and lose weight without starving or having to take diet pills. Lasting Impressions has me feeling great about myself and more motivated than ever to keep the weight off.” Lasting Impressions guarantees 100 percent satisfaction for those dedicated to losing weight and keeping it off. All supplements are homeopathic based and come with the program. Clients have weekly appointments with the Lasting Impressions team, receive motivational e-mails and can rest assured that they are not alone in their weight loss journey. Dr. Conforti says, “We work as a team to help people become healthier versions of themselves. You will never be alone in your struggle because the Lasting Impressions pro-

gram is a team effort.” With five locations to serve you throughout the Tampa Bay Area, Lasting Impressions Weight Loss takes the guessing game out of losing weight. Owner and operator, Master Plumber and fine craftsman Zoltan Kovacs’ services range from bathroom and kitchen remodeling to complete

plumbing repairs performed with accuracy, integrity and masterful skills. Zoltan explains that in order to become a Master Plumber you must have a minimum of eight years’ experience in the field, with four of them in a supervisory position before you can apply to take the test. Then, over two days, you must pass a 19-hour test. One day of testing is on business and accounting, and the other day is on the plumbing trade. In addition to being a Master Plumber, Zoltan is a licensed cabinet contractor, and can completely remodel kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you need tile work, plumbing, cabinetry craftsmanship or a complete remodeling – Zoltan Kovacs has the expertise to get the job done the right way. Born and raised in Hungary, where he attended trade school for three years to become a plumber, he moved to New York in 1986 and worked in plumbing until 1992, when he moved to Florida where Zoltan

worked for local construction and plumbing companies before he opened his own family owned and operated company in 1999. Although Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodeling, he also is very adept at repairing leaks in water lines, and leaks both above and below ground can quickly be detected and repaired. The company also repairs and replaces gas and electric hot water heaters, as well as installing, repairing and replacing garbage disposals, air conditioning condensation lines and more. Most times Zoltan can quickly assess what your plumbing problem may be. He is uses efficient and up to date plumbing

equipment to diagnose problems. Sometimes, it is maintaining something simple that will prevent major problems. The number one cause of floods in residential homes is due to the wear and tear on washing machine hoses; reverse osmosis filter systems with colored plastic tubes are not as durable as stainless steel braided hoses and become brittle over time. Simple things that are cheap to repair or replace can save you hundreds of dollars, or even thousands, if a flood were to occur. Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing offers free estimates, which allows the company to assess the problem and complete any repairs in a timely fashion. Zoltan says, “Each job is unique

Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic Where Patients Conquer Pain! By Amy Paterson Your health comes first at Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic, located at 34258 U.S. 19 North. Dr. Bartley Kerr and his staff have a longstanding reputation in Palm Harbor for providing excellent services to their patients by personalizing treatment for every individual that is under their care and supervising a plan to improve every patient’s health and wellness. In business for over fifteen years in Palm Harbor, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation has been at their

new, larger, state-of-the-art facility for just over a year. Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic emphasizes improving your health in an effort to reduce the risk of pain and illness, so that you may live your life to its fullest potential. Dr. Bartley Kerr, CEO, along with Dr. John DeCosmo, Dr. Anthony P. Digiammo, Dr. Gordon Lovett, Dr. Frank Reinhardt, and Dr. Kevin Marcinkowski, are working together to ensure that each one of their patients gets exactly the right treatment for their specific needs. Each new patient receives a full orthopedic and neurological assessment and x-ray upon their first visit with the practice. During the initial visit, as well as those to follow, ample time is taken to get to know the patient on a physical and personal level, which helps the doctors and staff at Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation to thoroughly treat their patients with the best care possible. In-Network Insurance Providers Typically people don’t go to see a chiropractor for rehabilitation unless they have insurance and/or have had an

injury that is causing pain in their daily lives. Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic is well-known for being an In-Network provider for most Insurance companies, which limits outof-pocket spending for their patients. A full list is provided on their website at www.palmharborchiro.com, however, if you don’t see your insurance on the list, give them a call because the list is evergrowing and some may have been added before they’ve even had time to update the list found on their site. Retainer Practice In addition to being a leading InNetwork provider and accepting traditional insurances, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic is revolutionizing health care in our area by being the first in our area to introduce itself as a “retainer practice.” Due to the increasing numbers of patients with high deductibles on their insurance plans and the ever growing number of uninsured patients needing affordable care, they have devised one of the first chiropractic retainer practices in the area. Already a big hit with medical doctors out west, retainer practices allow the

patient to pay a small monthly fee and minimal co-pay upon their visits. The monthly retainer fee is only $39 a month, and $15 for each visit to the office. The monthly fee includes the Dr. Digiammo patients’ first adjusts a patient time visit complete with x-rays and health assessments. The $15 is good for any chiropractic adjustment and therapies, or half-hour massage and therapies, or decompression and therapies, or acupuncture and therapies as needed. Dr. Kerr says that this new way of practicing “is the way medicine was intended to be provided.” The wonderful thing about a retainer practice is that virtually anyone in need of care can afford to have it. This is especially true for people without insurance or those who are financially struggling. In some cases, even those with insurance policies can benefit from

the retainer program because of all the high deductibles that some insurance plans require. Another great benefit that comes with choosing the retainer program is that each patient has the freedom to choose his or her type of treatment plan and the ability to commit to their own healthcare. Dr. Kerr believes this will bring the patient empowerment and he and the staff are very excited to see the benefits of the new retainer practice in the new year of 2013. Auto Accidents At Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic, the staff is familiar with auto accidents that lead to injury. But here, Dr. Kerr and his staff of professionals will treat you like a person, and not just a case number for insurance purposes. They will help you not only get better, but also to navigate through the regulations and red tape related to injury accidents. There are now new laws in place that are making patients claiming injury or accidents adhere to a stricter set of guidelines when seeking care. A new law in Florida, which addresses your Personal Injury Protection Coverage and went into effect on January 1, 2013, states that people injured in auto accidents will have 14 days to seek initial treatment — under the previous law

there was no cutoff. By having an M.D. on staff, which is Dr. DeCosmo, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation is able to make an “Emergency Medical Condition” claim for their patients after an auto injury if they have one. This enables patients to possibly receive all the benefits of their auto inThe therapy suite at Palm Harbor surance to pay for their Chiropractic and Rehabilitation care for their injuries. The Battle Against ALS – Every Contribution Makes a Difference! By Alexis Selby After moving to the Cheval neighborhood in the beginning of 2011, Gary Dassatti and his wife Barb met a wonderful couple, Doug and Pat McGuiness. Doug has ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease – and has been battling this terrible disease for the past 10 years. He has traveled the world in hopes of finding a cure and has visited China several times for stem cell and lumbar puncture treatments, which have helped to extend his time here. Doug is a fighter and with the help of the ALS Association FL Chapter, hopes to find a cure in the future. Inspired by his story, after meeting Doug and some of the great people at the ALS Association FL Chapter, a national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS, Gary, who had just retired and was looking to do some kind of volunteer work, became involved as a volunteer, fundraiser and advocate for ALS. Just recently, Gary also made a trip to Washington, DC for the annual ALS Advocacy Conference to try and gain more awareness of ALS and to get more funding for these efforts. Gary says, “This conference was a very re-

26

warding experience, but at the same time very emotional, as there were almost 100 ALS Patients in attendance in varied states of their progress with ALS. There were over 500 total Advocates from all over the United States and we had hundreds of meetings with offices of the Senate and Congress to fight for continued funding and more funding to support research.” About ALS ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a motor neuron disease that was first described in 1869 by the noted French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, named after the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig, who first brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. A common first symptom includes a painless weakness in your hand, foot, arm or leg, which occurs in more than half of all cases. Other early symptoms include speech, swallowing

or walking difficulty. The biological mechanisms that cause ALS are only partially understood and the only known cause of ALS is a mutation of a specific gene – the SOD1 gene. This mutation is believed to make a defective protein that is toxic to motor nerve cells. The SOD1 mutation, however, accounts for only 1 or The ALS Florida Chapter held its annual 2 percent of ALS Ride to Defeat ALS one-day cycling event on Nov. 3 cases, or 20 percent ing seemingly random attacks on previof the familial (inherited) cases. The ALS Association Florida Chapter Established in 1985, The ALS Association is the only national not-forprofit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. The ALS Association Florida Chapter was co-founded by patient Ann Smith in August of 1987 as the Tampa Bay Chapter, in hopes of serving the needs of those living with ALS and their caregivers in the Tampa Bay Area. After expanding its services to all areas in the state of Florida in 2001, it became known as the Florida Chapter and now services the entire state. This chapter carries out its mission by empowering the lives of those living with ALS through care, advocacy, research, education and support. Their programs include support groups, case management, respite care, medical equipment loans, educational services, and national and state advocacy. Throughout the year the ALS Association FL Chapter holds many

fundraising events, including their annual Ride to Defeat ALS. Annual Ride to Defeat ALS The first annual event, the Tour de Vie 2009, was headed by Shelly Reale after ALS devastated her family with her mother’s diagnosis, as a way to give meaning to her mother’s difficult journey. This event yielded more than 200 riders and raised over $53,000 and due to its huge success, became an annual tradition. In 2010, the ALS Florida Chapter decided to change the event’s name to “Ride to Defeat ALS” which clearly defines their ultimate mission – a world without ALS! On November 3rd the ALS Florida Chapter held their annual Ride to Defeat ALS, a one-day cycling event designed to appeal to every level of rider – offering a 62-mile route, a 25mile route, and a 5-mile Family Fun Ride, which is presented by United Seating & Mobility. This ride is an exciting opportunity for everyone to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig’s Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. All-in-all the ride was a huge success and contributions for that day totaled over $240,000! Throughout the ride, every participant can count on support from start to finish with crew-manned rest stops,

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

SAG vehicles, and a safety team. Upon completing the tour, riders are welcomed back by cheering crowds and finish line festivities that include entertainment, complimentary massages, a healthy lunch, and exciting demos. This past race was a huge success. “The response from people was so great last year and I look forward to even better fundraising this year,” says Gary. It is because of caring, dedicated people like Gary and persistent fighters like Doug, that the ALS Association is possible. Over the past few decades, the ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to finding effective treatments and a cure for ALS and their

global research effort has helped increase the number of scientists working on ALS, advanced new discoveries and treatments, and has shed light on the complex genetic and environmental factors involved in ALS. But the fight is not over, and for the ALS Association to continue their search for a cure to this terrible disease, vital funding is needed. With your support, together we can one day defeat ALS for good! For more information on the ALS Association Florida Chapter or to make a donation please visit their website at www.ALSAFL.org or their Facebook page.

By Kim Thomas It’s true that when you step out in fine, well-fitting clothes, you walk a little taller with a confidence that makes other people take notice. Master Italian custom tailor Angelo DePergola has worked his entire life as a custom tailor, and has been helping men and women in the Tampa Bay area to find their best fit for a professional edge since 1970. “I love what I do,” says Angelo. “I really love my profession and putting people in good fitting, well-made garments.” Angelo offers full custom tailoring, from simple, quick fixes such as hemming pants or sleeves for a better fit to completely custom-fitting one of the ready-made suits or dress shirts from his extensive selection in the store. Or, he will tailor your own suit or clothing article that you bring in. “A lot of my customers buy suits, shirts and pants and bring them to me because they know when I get through with those clothes, they are going to look perfect. Someone can bring me a suit that they paid $500 for

and when I’m done it looks like a $3,000 suit.” The Italian ready made suits that Angelo sells at his store can make you look like you’re wearing a custom made suit! When you buy a ready made suit from Angelo he will custom fit to your body at no extra charge. A custom tailored suit stands out and makes a statement, letting others know that you are one who takes true pride in your appearance and others perception of you. For those customers who want and expect a garment or suit that is made specifically for them, Angelo has over 1000 choices of fine fabrics for customers to choose from for the creation of new pants, dress shirts, a suit or sport coat. You pick the style, fabric, and pattern and Angelo will create your custom garment. People from all walks of life make up Angelo’s customers. talent. His garments are all made from the finest natural fabrics available. His suits are well-priced and he knows the industry inside and out. Angelo is used to helping the most discerning and demanding customers and he is very confident in his own abilities. “There is nobody learning to tailor today,” says Angelo. “You have to start at 10 or 11, and learn discipline first. I started to learn very early and by age 11, I knew how to make pants and by the time I was 13, I knew

how to make a full suit and I already had customers. I used to go into the shop and work from seven in the morning to 10 at night, six days a week to learn to tailor. “Beauty & Health” Continued from page 1 Located at 11309 Countryway Boulevard in Westchase, the Beauty and Health Institute is the only school of its kind in the area. “We have students from all over the city and surrounding areas,” says Sunny Moroz, School Coordinator. “We have even had students come all the way from Tennessee. Students can enroll in classes and begin a program at any time. We offer day and evening classes and will work with anyone to accommodate his or her schedule. Some programs only take six weeks to complete and then students will be on their way to a new, successful, and rewarding career.” The Beauty and Health Institute specializes in training students in electrolysis, laser hair removal, medical aesthetics, massage therapy, facial/skin care, permanent makeup and lymphology. In addition to offering many different continuing education classes, they also offer a variety of programs including advanced clinical aesthetician and hair

transplant technician courses, as well as full spa specialist and nail specialist programs. For more information or to discuss school programs please contact school administrator Deisy Oropesa at (813) 749-1814. Deisy is fluent in both English and Spanish. “Years ago, when my mother became interested in learning how to do laser hair removal, she had to travel to Orlando for classes,” says Sunny. “Once she saw how rewarding her new career was, she wanted to help out others in the area and decided to open the Beauty and Health Institute.” The students at the Beauty and Health Institute come from all different backgrounds – from those with no experience in the industry who are looking for a new career, to professionals who want to master a new procedure or continue their education. The Beauty and Health Institute is also ideal for doctors who want to learn new techniques in skin resurfacing or Vaser Lipo-

In fact, if you’ve been to a spa in the Tampa area, chances are you’ve met a graduate from the Beauty and Health Institute. “Our students are very successful,” says Don Kruse, CEO/President of Beauty Health Institute. “Many go on to open their own businesses.” Some of the graduates of the Beauty

their students receive the very best instruction from highly skilled instructors. They offer small classes designed so each student receives the individual attention and help they need. The instructors at the Beauty and Health Institute include doctors and professionals who have had years of experience and are committed to helping their students succeed. The school’s 5,000-square-foot facility features state-of-the-art equipment and classrooms for students to receive instruction in a clinical, spa-like setting where they learn the most current industry techniques. One of those new advances in the industry includes Vaser Liposuction. Vaser technology has completely changed the way doctors perform surgical fat removal. It is a quick and minimally invasive surgery that uses only local anesthetics. Benefits of Vaser Liposuction as compared to traditional Liposuction include, minimal post-op recovery time so you can be back to work the next day; the permanent removal of fat, which helps to tighten the skin; no visible stitches; and no visible incisions. Best of all – Vaser Liposuction does not require you to go under general anesthesia, and costs a

lot less than traditional liposuction. In addition to offering Vaser Liposuction to their clients, the Beauty and Health Institute also offers classes, giving doctors and other professionals the opportunity to come and learn this innovative procedure firsthand. The Beauty and Health Institute is licensed in Florida by the Department of Health, Department of Education, Board of Medicine, Board of Electrolysis, Board of Massage, and Commission for Independent Education. The school is a member of the American Electrolysis Society and the Society for Clinical & Medical Hair Removal, Inc. They are also Nationally Accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, an approved MyCAA School through Veterans Affairs, and they accept the Post 9/11 GI Bill. The Beauty and Health Institute is located at 11309 Countryway Boulevard in Westchase. The Landon Outreach Foundation Makes a Difference in Pasco County By Julie Kanehl Every once in awhile you come across someone who truly makes a difference in the lives of others, and not just those they know, but more importantly, those they don’t know. Dedicated and sincerely created for the purpose of helping individuals and families in need, The Landon Outreach Foundation has been making a difference in Pasco County since 2009. The Landon Outreach Foundation is a non-profit, philanthropic organization that was sincerely born of the heart by Bruce N. Landon, MD and Cheryl Landon of Landon Plastic Surgery. Cheryl says, “We wanted to be able to reach out to the community – there are a lot of people who need help.” It’s this sincere spirit of giving that drives Landon Outreach Foundation, Landon Plastic Surgery and the Spa Boutique, which offers a variety of non-surgical health, beauty and wellness services. It all started with Landon Plastic Surgery, which is

40

well-known to be a popular and trusted place for surgical services such as breast augmentation, body sculpting and facial procedures (just to name a few). Dr. Bruce Landon has practiced plastic and reconstructive surgery in the area for nearly 20 years, and in that time, he and his wife have always contributed to the community. While the Landons donated for many, many years prior to starting the organization, they raised the bar by creating the Foundation which offers financial assistance, community service and food distribution in our area and beyond. In fact, Dr. Landon travels around the world to perform surgical procedures for people who cannot afford it. These Medical Missions travel to places like Haiti, where they help nearly 1,500 patients in three days. He performs minor procedures like removing growths, he gives stitches where necessary, and he’s even performed a number of surgeries on a young girl whose hands were deformed. Her fingers were fused, and now she has the use of three fingers on her hand.

Cheryl explains, “These people have absolutely nothing. They drink dirty water – they don’t even have running water. We stay at an orphanage when we go. It goes back to what you and I take for granted.” The Landon Outreach Foundation has reached out locally to the PACE Center for Girls, The Salvation Army Domestic Violence Shelter, the RAP House (Runaway Alternatives Project), Pasco County Schools’ needy families, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Children’s Cancer Center. “The Landon Outreach Foundation and Landon Plastic Surgery go together, and it’s a way for us to grow.” In fact, when patients have surgery at Landon Plastic Surgery, a portion of their deposit goes directly to the Foundation. Cheryl adds, “It’s been awesome because the money just builds and it funds a lot of what the foundation does.” Cheryl Landon’s heart goes beyond talking about helping others, and beyond the occasional wish about making a difference. She has a gift for seeing what many of us take for

granted. She says, “We donate to The Salvation Army’s Domestic Violence Shelter, and many of these women leave in the middle of the night with little more than what is on their backs and very little for their children. We bring them soap, shampoo, food, diapers, towels, and all the necessary things that you and I take for granted…They don’t have.” The Pasco PACE Center for Girls has called on the Landon Outreach Foundation as well, to help the local girls in the area reach their greatest potential. For the second time in two years, The Landon Outreach Foundation has successfully put on an etiquette class. Cheryl says, “We hired an etiquette coach to come out and we went to Capital Grille!” She continues, “They also have a fashion show…and we are always a big sponsor for that as well.” Once, the PACE Center for Girls called upon Cheryl and Bruce for non-perishables, so they headed straight to Wal-Mart, filled up a cart, and they were happy to be able to help. On Saturday, February 9th, they will be hosting their first annual “Will Run 4 Chocolate” 5k walk/run and 1-mile Family Fun Run at the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. This great, family event will promote health and wellness and the $25 advanced registration fee will support The Landon Outreach Foundation, allowing them to continue to give back all throughout the year. Both Cheryl and Bruce are avid runners, and she says, “We are working with Hammer Time Fitness to sponsor this event in New Port Richey, and you can walk or you can run. At the end of the race, everyone will be rewarded with chocolate!” To participate in their upcoming “Will Run 4 Chocolate” event, or for more information, The Landon Outreach Foundation can be reached at (727) 376-3999, or online at www.landonoutreach.com.
