Pasco Pediatric Foundation’s Holiday Event Treated 88 Children to a Merry Christmas In December 88 Pasco County children and their families celebrated Christmas early – and in a big way – thanks to the Pasco Pediatric Foundation (PPF). PPF’s 8th annual event, held this year at Sea Forest’s clubhouse in New Port Richey on Dec. 15, featured holiday activities – like decorating cookies and stockings – and giving gifts to kids who may not find presents under the tree Christmas morning. “What makes this event so special is we shop from wish lists that the kids provide,” said Heidi Tuttle-Beisner, President of the PPF. “They were so excited when they opened those presents because they got what they really wanted.” In addition to gifts, the kids also received jackets and Payless ShoeSource gift cards. PPF also gave families HoneyBaked Ham Company gift

Volunteers Needed for Tax Return Preparation Pasco County is seeking volunteers for its thriving volunteer income tax return program supported by United Way of Pasco County, AARP Tax-Aide, and the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program. Last year alone, we prepared and submitted more than 7,000 returns, which helped bring residents more than $7.2 million in income refunds! The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs are community-based partnerships managed by the IRS that provide free tax return preparation assistance to low-to-moderate income taxpayers. This year the IRS has set the income limit at $57,000. The Right Fit Foundation Notifying Parents of Seniors of FASFA Deadlines & Requirements You may have heard, “the FAFSA is free and easy, you don’t need help - just press the button after you file your taxes

and you’re done.” Consider this: The IRS provides instructions on how to fill out your taxes, but not instructions on how to pay the least amount in taxes. The same is true for FAFSA. The foundation would be happy to show you how to pay the least for college. Below is the financial aid timeline you will have to work within over the next several months: • January 1st the FAFSA will be available online. Make sure you know the financial aid deadlines for each college your student has applied to. Don’t forget, some colleges require the CSS Profile, W2s or their own financial aid forms. If you have questions about filling these out to your best advantage, give us a call - we provide free reviews. • December through February - Admission decisions come during these months and often include scholarship offers. Sometimes these offers have “expiration dates” in order to hook a family into committing to the college before receiving offers from other schools. • March and April - Award Letters

state the total cost of attendance (tuition, room/board, books, fees, etc.) and any financial aid (scholarships, loans, workstudy) the college is offering. Tip: Wait to make your final decision until you have an award letter from each college. Did you receive the best possible offer? The foundation can compare your student’s academic profile and your family’s financial profile with the award letter to give you an idea if you received what you should have. • May 1st is the deadline to submit your final decision. Unfortunately, May 1st does not give you a lot of time to review award letters. Don’t let that stop you from making an informed decision. Compare all your offers! The Right Fit Foundation is here to help if you have questions during this process. Like all our services, these are free to local Tampa Bay area families. $5,000 Local Scholarship Don’t forget! The Right Fit Foundation is offering a $5,000 local scholarship to Hillsborough & Pasco County high school students. • No essay required • Weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher • Preference given to middle income families (annual household income typi-

cally between $50,000 and $200,000) To register, go to www.therightfitfoundation.org From the Pasco Sheriff’s Office Deputies from the Pasco Sheriff’s Office Land O’ Lakes Detention Center have recently created a new program that is aimed at demonstrating to at-risk juveniles the importance of making good decisions in their lives, and the negative consequences of when they make bad choices. This eye-opening program features both a PowerPoint slide presentation, taped video interviews with real jail inmates, and descriptions from the detention deputies’ real life experiences about what they see in jail every day. Deputies understand the temptations our modern society throws at kids today, and how it can lead them down the wrong road. The Juvenile Choice Program lists concrete ways in which preteens and teenagers can develop the skills to become and remain productive citizens. These include: Have Goals in Life; You Become Who You Hang With; Every Decision has Consequences...Good or Bad; Committing a Crime can Haunt You for Life; Be a Leader, Not a Follower; Be Proud and Stand Tall.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Included in the program is a picture tour of the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center, designated as an end point to bad decisions. The kids learn about how they will have to wear used inmate clothing, be told when to eat, see the less-than-desirable food that is served in jail, and the small cells with toilets that will become their living space for months, if not years, to come. Juvenile Choice Program participants will hear testimonies from inmates who describe their bad decisions and why they ended up in jail. Inmates explain that they used to be just like them, until they lost focus in life, started hanging out with criminals, drug users and drop-outs. Inmates woefully describe how they wished they had the chance to do it over again, and to make the right choices. Other elements of the program include insights from successful people in life from the business, sports, and political world. Pre-teens and teenagers will also learn that though mistakes and failure can come even from good choices, this is a valuable part of life, as long as you learn from your mistakes, and keep striving to be your best. Numerous quotes from celebrities provided to program participants illustrate this, such as the one from Michael Jordan: “I’ve missed more than

9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” We believe this program will be an effective tool and become an important part of our interaction with these kids before it is too late. We are working with juvenile justice authorities, Pasco school personnel, and other organizations to reach as many of these kids as we can. Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point Awarded an “A” for Patient Safety by Hospital Safety Score Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents, and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and

their families. “This ‘A’ rating has a very special meaning for us,” said Shayne George, CEO of Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. “It is recognition of our entire staff’s effort to ensure our service area of the safest hospital experience possible. Additionally, this is another objective third party measurement showing that RMCBP meets the highest industry standards and has again earned the top score awarded by the rating organization,” he added. “Hospitals like this that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to

their patients and their community,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I congratulate Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for its safety excellence, and look forward to the day when all hospitals will match this standard.” To see Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point’s scores as they compare nationally and locally, visit the Hospital Safety Score website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org, which also provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.

Seven Springs Golf and Country Club – Paradise in Your Backyard! By: Katelyn Thomas Lush fairways and beautifully manicured landscaping offers golfers a little slice of paradise at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club in New Port Richey. Conveniently located off of Trophy Boulevard, Seven Springs Golf and Country Club is rated as one of the top two courses in Pasco County; offering 36 holes against a backdrop of gorgeous Florida cypress tress, towering pines, calm lakes and seven mineral springs, all located on the property. Featuring golf, dining, entertainment, catering, recreation and membership perks, Seven Springs Golf and Country Club represents quality relaxation. The property that Seven Springs Golf and Country Club resides upon was essentially a health resort of sorts that was started by early New Port Richey settlers, Samuel H. and Elizabeth Stephenson. The couple were believers in the healing power of the mineral springs located on the property, which led to the installation of a well pipe that directed the mineral

10

water to a pool from the spring. The pool flowed into the Anclote River, where a bathhouse was built for guests. Samuel and Elizabeth shared their health philosophy with guests and, since the 1980s, Seven Springs Golf and Country Club has been a place of retreat, health, wellness and fun for the community to enjoy. Seven Springs Golf and Country Club has become a top, luxury golf course and resort; more than the Stephens had ever imagined. With two semi-private golf courses to choose from, an expanded clubhouse, fully outfitted golf shop, professional golf lessons, fitness rooms, saunas, a billiard room, card room, library, tennis courts, driving range, practice green and two swimming pools (one Olympic style for families and one for adults) – there is never a lack of opportunity to enjoy yourself.

Courses to Ace: Designed by architect Ron Garl, Seven Springs Country Club boasts two beautiful golf courses, The Champion Course and The Challenger Course. The Champion Course is a par 72 course, allowing golfers to play amid beautiful Florida scenery. The Challenger is a par 64/65 course that is many times referred to as the “game enhancing” course because of the short iron precision it teaches golfers to master. Parents and their kids learning new skills or brushing up on their

Dr. Laura’s Acupuncture & Holistic Practice Changes Lives By Julie Kanehl Acupuncture is a form of healing that dates back thousands of years, and it is proven to relieve a variety of symptoms from back pain to addiction, from infertility to insomnia, and from depression to erectile dysfunction. Acupuncture uses tiny, disposable sterile needles that are no bigger than a human hair to stimulate the blood flow and the energy within the body. These needles are so tiny that, as a patient, you can hardly feel them. When these needles are placed by a professional, multiple Board Certified Specialist like Laura Bertoncini, A.P., the positive effects can be felt almost immediately. Dr. Laura’s Acupuncture & Holistic Practice is located at 15215 US HWY 19 in Hudson, and Dr. Laura has been using acupuncture to make a difference in people’s lives for 10 years. Eastern Medicine is different from Western Medicine in that medicine, as we know it, is rarely used. Instead of popping pills made of chemicals, the focus is on the food and the herbs that

14

enter the body, the pressure points within the body, and the energetic meridians that can be stimulated during acupuncture. The benefits of acupuncture are too many to name here, and the risks are very slight. In fact, I can speak for acupuncture personally. After a car accident in 2009 and a medical mishap that left me unable to walk normally without shaking, and without a cane, I turned to acupuncture as a last ditch effort. I was willing to try anything. I was very skeptical, but I turned to a recommended doctor of acupuncture, and to my utter amazement – I was moving better after just one treatment. After four treatments I was no longer using my cane, and after six, most of my other symptoms were gone. While I still deal with chronic pain daily, and have a neck injury that still may require surgery, I have no doubt in my mind that acupuncture is a real solution, and one that can truly make a difference in people’s lives. Dr. Laura Bertoncini earned a five-year Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from East

West School of Natural Medicine in Sarasota, Florida, where she graduated at the top of her class. After graduating, she was offered an externship at HealthSouth Hospital in Sarasota where she worked with their medical staff to treat many patients with a variety of conditions. Dr. Laura is nationally Board Certified in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). She also graduated with honors from Florida Metropolitan University in Tampa with a degree in Business. Dr. Laura’s mother is a physician, and her grandmother before her was a nurse, so taking care of others seems to run in the family. Growing up around medicine, Dr. Laura has said that she was acutely aware of the amount of medicine that people were taking, and she was intrigued by the Eastern philosophy that uses holistic and natural remedies to treat patients. Dr. Laura says, “I saw that everything in medicine was treated with pills, pills, pills. After an immediate

Laura Bertoncini, A. P. family member had a disease, and the medicine they prescribed had serious side effects, I got into alternative medicine. In doing so I learned about Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture as well. When I tried acupuncture – she put a needle in me and I felt something. I knew then that there was something to it.” Dr. Laura also performs Reiki at her practice, which is a hands-on, energy-focused healing practice. She has

adds, “These treatments all build on each other, so patients feel progressively better after each treatment. Most of my patients have a six-week protocol, and I see them every week or every two weeks. Then sometimes they go to every month. I’m a no-pressure kind of doctor.”

After Acupuncture Changes Lives Acupuncture is different than what you may be used to. It’s a blend between medicine as we know it, and an orient-themed spa experience, especially because the treatment is soothing and relaxing. Its complexities take years to master, and a lifetime to hone, but those of us who have been healed by eastern medicine will tell you – it truly makes a difference. Acupuncture can help people with a myriad of problems from depression to infertility, and from headaches to obesity. Dr. Laura says, “Most people don’t know that acupuncture can help the 30 million men that suffer from ED (Erectile Dysfunction). The men with ED are usually 40 years old and up. Also for women I treat migraine,

The Acupuncture Facelift can deliver excellent results completed level one and two of Reiki training. She was trained by Dr. Huang from Orlando, in the specialty of Auricular Medicine. In summary, Auricular Medicine is acupuncture of the ear! Dr. Laura says, “You can treat the whole body by treating the ear.” Dr. Laura has ten years experience in Western and Eastern Medicine, and is focused on treating one patient at a time in a caring, hands-on environment. Her patients will tell you that their lives have changed for the better because of her treatments. Dr. Laura says, “Using all of these techniques, and all three of these modalities, makes me unique.” She

menopause and infertility. [I also treat] stress-related issues like anxiety, panic attacks and depression.” One of her patients said, “Due to a disc problem in my neck, I suffer from chronic neck pain and headaches. I have utilized acupuncturists previously and gotten some relief, but never to the degree I have gotten with Dr. Bertoncini. Dr. Bertoncini, who combines Reiki with her treatments, gave me immediate relief from my first visit and sustained relief (at about an 85% improvement level,) over the three months I was a patient. Dr. Bertoncini treats the whole person, she takes the time to explain what she is doing and why and has a great ‘bedside manner.’ I highly recommend Dr. Bertoncini to anyone serious about seeking pain relief.” Another patient said, “At the age of 13 I had two spinal surgeries for scoliosis that has left me in chronic pain. After 10 years of trying every method out there, I finally decided to give acupuncture a try. I was stunned by how much relief I instantly felt from such a minimal, yet relaxing procedure. Trinity Academic Center Makes the Grade! By Dara Tucker An exciting new business that helps eager learners of all ages recently opened in the community. Trinity Academic Center, located on Seven Springs Blvd., next to the Best of Philly and Academy of Dance Arts, offers several very reasonably priced workshops and programs that help to remediate, enrich, or prepare students. Owner and Director Michele Rehm has a Bachelor’s of Education from the University of South Florida, as well as 12 years teaching experience in the state, including a year as a primary reading intervention teacher. Michele, who was raised locally, also owned a tutoring business in the 1990s when her husband’s work moved them to Cocoa, Florida. After having three sons, Michele retired from teaching. Now that her children are older she is excited to be helping students and parents again – as Michele considers her job to be both an academic coach, and assistant to the parents. Michele explains, “I want to help parents. Their house

can be so much happier when arguments about school work are eliminated. Kids work for me, and while they may not like coming at first, they enjoy coming as they start to feel successful.”

Programs and workshops that Trinity Academic Center offers include a twice weekly, one-hour, eight-week remediation for a specific subject, as well as homework help. Michele keeps her programs to a one-to-four teacher-to-student ratio. The goal is to coach students in strategies and techniques that will help each child become a productive student capable of understanding their class work, completing homework, and learning how to prepare for tests. Elementary students bring their planners, and middle and high school students bring their planners and access their E-Sembler, so Michele can know what tests and assignments are coming up. Middle school student Jessie Husak goes to Trinity Academic Center to get help with her homework and organization. Jessie says, “I’m more confident about my school work now. I’m doing better in math, too.” Jessie’s dad added that she’s more enthusiastic and motivated to even do her homework at the house now.

He sees the confidence his daughter has gained as a big plus to her working with Michele. Trinity Academic Center offers a seven-week College Test Prep Workshop given on Sunday from 12 – 3 p.m. The purpose of this workshop is to teach strategies and techniques on how to improve students’ chances of getting a high score. Michele explains that with her high school students she focuses on their goals – where do they want to go to school, and what they need to do to make that goal a reality. She makes it easy to understand what students need to accomplish in order to qualify for Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, and even has a link on the website so parents and students can easily access it. Jeff Meyer, who is also Michele’s business partner, had his daughter Maryann work with Michele after she missed the qualifying score for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship by only 20 points. Jeff explains, “I know Maryann didn’t want to take the test

Trinity Academic Center is located in the Oak Ridge Plaza on Seven Springs Boulevard

Trinity Academic Center’s low ratios of one coach to every four students allows students to have individualized help

again, but $9,000 is a lot of money! I told her we’ll have you work with Michele, and take the test again. When she took it again, she earned the score she needed. Parents get a great return on their investment when their student works with Michele. Maryann is volunteering here (Trinity Academic Center) now to earn her volunteer hours for Florida Bright Futures, and she’s able to help other students with their skills.” Maryann was recently accepted at USF and is on her way to a

successful college experience. Advanced Placement Subject Test Prep classes start in February. Michele’s oldest son Tyler Rehm will be aiding students alongside his mom because of his vast experience and success with passing ten Advanced Placement classes when he was in high school. Tyler, a senior at University of South Florida, graduated high school with over 50 college credit hours. With Tyler’s help students will work through the test prep book for their

subject or subjects, and learn the overall test taking skills that he found successful. A Basic Computer Workshop will be available for adults on Saturday mornings for those who are just starting to learn their way around the computer. You bring your lap top to the class so you can learn how to set up your Email, IM (Instant Message) Skype, search the internet, load your pictures and videos, and make a movie or slide show to share with family and friends. Trinity Academic Center also has programs for students who take online classes, and need support (eschool or virtual school support), and home school students can come during regular hours in the afternoon. During the summer Enrichment Camps are being planned to help students keep their learning momentum going over the long break. Michele’s desire is to help students and parents see academic success. For a very reasonable price she creates concrete, reasonable goals for students based on what they want for their future, and then she helps them along their road to success.

Trinity Academic Center is located at 2323 Seven Springs Blvd. in New Port Richey. Hours and times are: Tutoring on Mon. – Thurs., 3:30 – 7:30 p.m.; Test Prep, 12 – 3 p.m. on Sun. There are 8week (best deal) and 4-week programs, and test prep classes are 7 weeks long. Basic computer workshops are 2 hours long. Call (727) 372-7079 to schedule an appointment to speak with Michele about how she can help your student, or visit TrinityAcademicCenter.com to learn more.

take part in an iTheatrics workshop of Xanadu JR. in New York City in the summer of 2011. In 2010, Tampa Bay Children’s Theater Group students performed Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Kids. Student Mackenzie Nelson was invited to take part in an iTheatrics workshop of My Son Pinocchio JR. with Stephen Schwartz. TBPAA creates an enriching and educational experience for its students by involving parents and community volunteers in all aspects of production, including casting. To prevent TBPAA teachers and directors from being affected by any personal biases they may have for their students, a panel of 10 volunteer judges assists the directors with casting decisions. The panel uses the judging forms provided in the Music Theatre International materials and awards roles based on a point system. Directors and teachers spend 3-6 weeks teaching students how to audition, including the importance of working as a team prior to auditions. Roles are announced in the style of an awards show, with each cast member receiving an envelope with a personal card to commemorate their special part in

the show. TBPAA students are committed to giving back to their community. The group is currently working with Oak Grove Middle School to organize a special performance at the school to raise money for its library program. In addition to group appearances, many TPBAA students perform in other local productions and city- and county-related special events. Student Trey Milcowitz recently sang the national anthem at an annual event benefiting Miles for Hope, an organization that raises money to fight brain cancer, and Taylor Willis has performed at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center’s community theater. The group works hard to raise money for their own productions as well. Among the fund-raisers planned for early 2013 are a car wash and a local talent showcase scheduled for February 23, 2013. Tampa Bay Children’s Theater is a t/b/a of the for-profit organization Nicola Productions Inc. Tampa Bay Performing Arts Academy is also a t/b/a of Nicola Production Inc.

Nothing Beats Fresh, Clean Carpets from Generations Carpet Cleaning By Amy Paterson If you’re looking to get a jumpstart on your spring cleaning projects this year, Generations Carpet Cleaning is here to help. Professionally cleaned carpet, upholstery and rugs can look brand new again, and your whole house or office will smell crisp and clean after a cleaning from Generations Carpet Cleaning. Servicing both residential and commercial clients including apartment complexes, office buildings, restaurants and churches. Generations Carpet Cleaning is affordable, reliable and prompt, and provides excellent results with a family secret stain removal technique. Owners and operators of Generations Carpet Cleaning, Mike and Jenn Rowe have known each other since they were kids growing up in Dunedin. Now the two high school sweethearts are married with a couple of kids of their own, and have chosen to settle in this beautiful area to raise their family and continue building their business. that has a family legacy behind it. Mike comes from a long line of carpet cleaners – literally generations of them. His late grandfather taught the trade to his sons, and Mike’s father and three uncles all have carpet cleaning businesses of their own. Thirteen years ago, when Mike was only 19 years old, he started his own carpet cleaning company, MicroVent, in New Tampa with a goal to grow his business by providing exceptional service coupled with excellent results. It was a formula that worked. Most of MicroVent’s business was cleaning apartment complex carpets, so cleaning was done on a big scale. The results that Mike was able to give his customers were remarkable and he quickly gained notoriety for doing such an efficient job. To this day, his commercial clients

mom Dawn Vazquez shares, “Generations Carpet Cleaners did an excellent job many times on our carpets. Even as the carpets aged and took abuse from my young children, they looked brand new once Generations cleaned them. I would highly recommend this company.” Happy customer Chelce Day says, “Generations Carpet Cleaning is by far the best carpet cleaning company I have ever used. I have four young children and they can make quite a mess on my carpet. Generations Carpet Cleaning makes my carpets look brand new every time they come out. It’s so nice to have a company I can trust to save my carpets.” When people ask how he is able to get those tough stains out, he simply tells them that it is a family secret that was passed down to him from his father, and to his father from his grandfather. Some things are just best kept secret when it comes to family recipes. One thing that Mike is always proud to share with his customers is the fact that he only uses high-quality cleaning products that will not leave behind residue. Some cheap cleaners leave behind sticky residue that is likely to pick up dirt just as soon as someone treads across the carpet.

In addition to stain removal and cleaning of carpet and upholstery, Mike offers carpet repair. He can repair just about anything carpet-related, and performs specialty services including dying carpet. Jamey Mason, another one of Generations Carpet Cleaning’s customers states, “I was very satisfied with the professionalism and quality of service provided by Generations Carpet Cleaning. I would highly recommend them for your carpet or upholstery cleaning needs.” If you have carpet or upholstery that is looking like last year’s news,

Generations Carpet Cleaning has the fix. Call them today to make your appointment for a fresh, new look at an affordable price. Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic Where Patients Conquer Pain! By Amy Paterson Your health comes first at Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic, located at 34258 U.S. 19 North. Dr. Bartley Kerr and his staff have a longstanding reputation in Palm Harbor for providing excellent services to their patients by personalizing treatment for every individual that is under their care and supervising a plan to improve every patient’s health and wellness. In business for over fifteen years in Palm Harbor, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation has been at their

new, larger, state-of-the-art facility for just over a year. Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic emphasizes improving your health in an effort to reduce the risk of pain and illness, so that you may live your life to its fullest potential. Dr. Bartley Kerr, CEO, along with Dr. John DeCosmo, Dr. Anthony P. Digiammo, Dr. Gordon Lovett, Dr. Frank Reinhardt, and Dr. Kevin Marcinkowski, are working together to ensure that each one of their patients gets exactly the right treatment for their specific needs. Each new patient receives a full orthopedic and neurological assessment and x-ray upon their first visit with the practice. During the initial visit, as well as those to follow, ample time is taken to get to know the patient on a physical and personal level, which helps the doctors and staff at Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation to thoroughly treat their patients with the best care possible. In-Network Insurance Providers Typically people don’t go to see a chiropractor for rehabilitation unless they have insurance and/or have had an

injury that is causing pain in their daily lives. Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic is well-known for being an In-Network provider for most Insurance companies, which limits outof-pocket spending for their patients. A full list is provided on their website at www.palmharborchiro.com, however, if you don’t see your insurance on the list, give them a call because the list is evergrowing and some may have been added before they’ve even had time to update the list found on their site. Retainer Practice In addition to being a leading InNetwork provider and accepting traditional insurances, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic is revolutionizing health care in our area by being the first in our area to introduce itself as a “retainer practice.” Due to the increasing numbers of patients with high deductibles on their insurance plans and the ever growing number of uninsured patients needing affordable care, they have devised one of the first chiropractic retainer practices in the area. Already a big hit with medical doctors out west, retainer practices allow the

JANUARY 2013

patient to pay a small monthly fee and minimal co-pay upon their visits. The monthly retainer fee is only $39 a month, and $15 for each visit to the office. The monthly fee includes the Dr. Digiammo patients’ first adjusts a patient time visit complete with x-rays and health assessments. The $15 is good for any chiropractic adjustment and therapies, or half-hour massage and therapies, or decompression and therapies, or acupuncture and therapies as needed. Dr. Kerr says that this new way of practicing “is the way medicine was intended to be provided.” The wonderful thing about a retainer practice is that virtually anyone in need of care can afford to have it. This is especially true for people without insurance or those who are financially struggling. In some cases, even those with insurance policies can benefit from

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

the retainer program because of all the high deductibles that some insurance plans require. Another great benefit that comes with choosing the retainer program is that each patient has the freedom to choose his or her type of treatment plan and the ability to commit to their own healthcare. Dr. Kerr believes this will bring the patient empowerment and he and the staff are very excited to see the benefits of the new retainer practice in the new year of 2013. Auto Accidents At Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Clinic, the staff is familiar with auto accidents that lead to injury. But here, Dr. Kerr and his staff of professionals will treat you like a person, and not just a case number for insurance purposes. They will help you not only get better, but also to navigate through the regulations and red tape related to injury accidents. There are now new laws in place that are making patients claiming injury or accidents adhere to a stricter set of guidelines when seeking care. A new law in Florida, which addresses your Personal Injury Protection Coverage and went into effect on January 1, 2013, states that people injured in auto accidents will have 14 days to seek initial treatment — under the previous law

there was no cutoff. By having an M.D. on staff, which is Dr. DeCosmo, Palm Harbor Chiropractic and Rehabilitation is able to make an “Emergency Medical Condition” claim for their patients after an auto injury if they have one. This enables patients to possibly receive all the benefits of their auto inThe therapy suite at Palm Harbor Chiropractic surance to pay for their and Rehabilitation care for their injuries. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy By Matthew Selby We published this story in our first issue of the Westchase Area Neighborhood News and Lifestyles and with the readership numbers growing every single month we thought it was important to print it again. Our main focus at the Westchase Area Neighborhood News and Lifestyles is to keep dollars in our local economy. It is our mission to provide every single business in the 33626 zip code and beyond with a quality vehicle to promote their business to all of their neighbors – that is why we mail to every home and business in the Westchase area every single month! In today’s rough economy, small local businesses are closing their doors on a daily basis, while many big corporate businesses still have the investors and financial backing to pull through. There is nothing wrong with national companies by any means, but by spending our money in locally owned businesses we can help our local economy flourish instead of decline. When we spend money locally, we

34

contribute to the wellbeing of the entire community. Local businesses build strong vibrant towns, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made by people who live in the community and thus, will feel the impact of each decision they make directly. Many local businesses recycle excess revenue by giving back to the community in which they live; which enriches the area and creates an even better place to live and love. Locally owned and operated businesses also create jobs and sometimes pay even better than the “big guys.” Competition is not a bad thing. A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and above all, low prices. For example, there are hundreds of restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next to each other. This is necessary in a thriving economy. Can you imagine if there was only one type of each business in each town? It would be a monopoly and the price of a monopolized product would be astronomical!

Entrepreneurship is what fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity and serves as a key means for families to move out of a low paying job and into the middle and upper class. By spending money locally, we are putting money directly back into the community, therefore helping your family, your neighbors and your friends.

The Landon Outreach Foundation Makes a Difference in Pasco County By Julie Kanehl Every once in awhile you come across someone who truly makes a difference in the lives of others, and not just those they know, but more importantly, those they don’t know. Dedicated and sincerely created for the purpose of helping individuals and families in need, The Landon Outreach Foundation has been making a difference in Pasco County since 2009. The Landon Outreach Foundation is a non-profit, philanthropic organization that was sincerely born of the heart by Bruce N. Landon, MD and Cheryl Landon of Landon Plastic Surgery. Cheryl says, “We wanted to be able to reach out to the community – there are a lot of people who need help.” It’s this sincere spirit of giving that drives Landon Outreach Foundation, Landon Plastic Surgery and the Spa Boutique, which offers a variety of nonsurgical health, beauty and wellness services. It all started with Landon Plastic Surgery, which is well-known to be a popular and trusted place for surgical services such as breast augmentation, body sculpting and facial procedures (just to name a few). Dr. Bruce Lan-

38

don has practiced plastic and reconstructive surgery in the area for nearly 20 years, and in that time, he and his wife have always contributed to the community. While the Landons donated for many, many years prior to starting the organization, they raised the bar by creating the Foundation which offers financial assistance, community service and food distribution in our area and beyond. In fact, Dr. Landon travels around the world to perform surgical procedures for people who cannot afford it. These Medical Missions travel to places like Haiti, where they help nearly 1,500 patients in three days. He performs minor procedures like removing growths, he gives stitches where necessary, and he’s even performed a number of surgeries on a young girl whose hands were deformed. Her fingers were fused, and now she has the use of three fingers on her hand. Cheryl explains, “These people have absolutely nothing. They drink dirty water – they don’t even have running water. We stay at an orphanage when we go. It goes back to what you and I take for granted.” The Landon Outreach Foundation

has reached out locally to the PACE Center for Girls, The Salvation Army Domestic Violence Shelter, the RAP House (Runaway Alternatives Project), Pasco County Schools’ needy families, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Children’s Cancer Center. “The Landon Outreach Foundation and Landon Plastic Surgery go together, and it’s a way for us to grow.” In fact, when patients have surgery at Landon Plastic Surgery, a portion of their deposit goes directly to the Foundation. Cheryl adds, “It’s been awesome because the money just builds and it funds a lot of what the foundation does.” Cheryl Landon’s heart goes beyond talking about helping others, and beyond the occasional wish about making a difference. She has a gift for seeing what many of us take for granted. She says, “We donate to The Salvation Army’s Domestic Violence Shelter, and many of these women leave in the middle of the night with little more than what is on their backs and very little for their children. We bring them soap, shampoo, food, diapers, towels, and all the necessary things that you and I take

for granted…They don’t have.” The Pasco PACE Center for Girls has called on the Landon Outreach Foundation as well, to help the local girls in the area reach their greatest potential. For the second time in two years, The Landon Outreach Foundation has successfully put on an etiquette class. Cheryl says, “We hired an etiquette coach to come out and we went to Capital Grille!” She continues, “They also have a fashion show…and we are always a big sponsor for that as well.” Once, the PACE Center for Girls called upon Cheryl and Bruce for nonperishables, so they headed straight to Wal-Mart, filled up a cart, and they were happy to be able to help. December is a busy time for The Landon Outreach Foundation. On the 11th, they held their 3rd holiday party for the Salvation Army Domestic Violence Shelter with Grill 54 on their patio! Cheryl says, “One of the children told me, ‘I never thought I’d have a Christmas.’ Grill 54 is very generous, and they provided the food for the adults, and Bruce got Happy Meals (from McDonald’s) for the kids! Every year we have gifts, Santa comes and we even set up a candy bar for the kids to

Their eyes just lit up when they saw that.” Less than a week later, The Landon Outreach Foundation offered its 1st Annual “Feeding the Hungry” event, where they prepared to feed 650 people in need – just in time for the holiday. Their “Feeding the Hungry” event featured chefs from Grille 54, Zim Zari, and other local restaurants. On Saturday, February 9th, they will be hosting their first annual “Will Run 4 Chocolate” 5k walk/run and 1-mile Family Fun Run at the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. Both Cheryl and Bruce are avid runners, and she says, “We are working with Hammer Time Fitness to sponsor this event in New Port Richey, and you can walk or you can run. At the end of the race, everyone will be rewarded with chocolate!” To participate in their upcoming “Will Run 4 Chocolate” event, or for more information, The Landon Outreach Foundation can be reached at (727) 376-3999, or online at www.landonoutreach.com.

Cheryl says, “There are 400 people who come, both parents and kids. For the kids there are arts and crafts and we provide two large gingerbread houses. One they decorate with candy, and the other they decorate with arts, crafts and embellishments! We have cookie decorating, and Flashes of Hope comes out to take family portraits. They donate their time to come and take photos of the kids. For some, it’s the last portrait that they’ll ever have. It’s a sad night, but

SmileFaith Foundation – Hope With Every Smile! By Alexis Selby The smile is a captivating expression that conveys personality, mood and confidence. Each smile tells a story – the happiness of our present state, and in some cases, the struggles of our past. Due to life circumstances and the mistakes of one’s past, many people’s once dazzling smiles have faded, leaving behind a mouth full of unhealthy teeth. At SmileFaith Foundation, they believe that no person should be limited by the condition of their smile and strive to help underprivileged individuals and veterans get much-needed dental care and regain control of their lives. “The SmileFaith Foundation has made my dreams come true,” states patient Rachel. “I now have my self-confidence back, and a beautiful smile. I showed off my teeth as if it were a new car.” Tom and Chrissie Lane, successful entrepreneurs and caring humanitarians, recognized the increasing need of so many individuals who were suffering from the devastating affects of poor oral health. It became clear to

42

them that many of these same people could also benefit from life coaching and encouragement to help them overcome the struggles which were keeping them from discovering life purpose, financial stability, healthy relationships and overall peace of mind. After envisioning a way to help, Tom and Chrissie founded the SmileFaith Foundation, Inc. in 2009, a 501 [c] [3] nonprofit foundation that provides charitable dental care, inspiration, and life resources for the residents of the Tampa bay Area and beyond. “The SmileFaith Foundation leadership brings a diverse background, including community service, international aid and relief work, faithbased ministry, counseling, business development and management, and entrepreneurship,” says Shalandra Stephenson, grant organizer at SmileFaith. “We are well-versed in servicing the dental needs of underserved and disadvantaged individuals and have also realized a marked success in providing individual counseling, as well as connectivity to important community resources.”

The SmileFaith Foundation is a unique nonprofit organization committed to charitable dental care and life coach counseling and thanks to the dedicated efforts of the amazing volunteers and employees, SmileFaith Foundation has helped over 500 recipients in the past three and a half years. and teach them new tools so they can acquire confidence on the inside.” The program takes a holistic approach to healing the mind, body and spirit and supports individuals in their quests for happiness, self-confidence, and stronger career opportunities. SmileFaith seeks to build lasting relationships with all of their recipients in order to help them through life’s trials both before and after the dental work is complete. The Smile Again Program provides funding assistance for dental treatments, counseling and assessments through an individual life coaching plan, additional community resources and connections, and most importantly – a dazzling new smile! “SmileFaith offers a hand-up not a hand-out,” says Tom, as he explains that in addition to providing grants and funding to underprivileged individuals, SmileFaith also helps their patients manage their financial situation and take responsibility for a partial portion of the cost of their dental care. By giving these recipients ownership, they now become invested in their progress, which in turn deters them from going down the path that led them to SmileFaith in the first place.

No one understands the heart and soul of SmileFaith better than Rosemarie Glade – the first ever SmileFaith recipient and the basis for which the program was founded. Before SmileFaith, Rosemarie’s smile was decimated due to years of bad decisions, and although she was trying to turn her life around, she was reminded of her past every time she looked in the mirror. With the help and generosity of SmileFaith, Rosemarie received the blessing of extensive dental care – resulting in a beautiful, new smile. “Rosemarie is our poster child,” says Tom. “She has a confident, infectious smile! Rosemarie is now the Special Ambassador for SmileFaith Foundation. She smiles brightly everyday, as she is reminded of just how far she has come with the help of God and wonderful friends like SmileFaith. As Special Ambassador, Rosemarie now assists others who are struggling with life’s issues to find hope with every smile.” The SmileFaith Foundation accepts new recipients based on nominations from either a friend, relative or neighbor (candidates may not nominate themselves). For more information or to nominate a deserving

individual please visit their website at www.SmileFaith.com. SmileFaith is proud to announce the Grand Opening of their new and unique thrift shop, and Christianbased coffeehouse, which are located right next door to their office in Port Richey at 8135 US Hwy 19. All proceeds from both the thrift shop and the coffee house will go to the SmileFaith Foundation. In order to better service local dental needs, Tom and Chrissie Lane are very excited about opening an onsite SmileFaith dental clinic in the near future. “Our plans are to have a full-time dentist at the new clinic, as well as continuing to partner with local dentist offices,” says Tom. Mission Trips The love and compassion of SmileFaith extends far beyond the Unites States. Through their mission trips, SmileFaith seeks to help underprivileged individuals throughout the world. On their recent mission trip to Guatemala, the SmileFaith team partnered with Guatemalan Mission Outreach and reached out to over 140 people in need of critical dental care. In addition to providing dental care, they also had an optical room where patients could go to get their eyes checked, a beautician offering haircuts, games for the children and a Bible club. If you are interested in joining SmileFaith on their next mission trip please contact their office at (727) 807-7958. Everyone is welcome! The SmileFaith Foundation hopes to expand in the near future and is actively looking for volunteers, so if you are ready to make a difference, please contact SmileFaith today. Tom and Chrissie have created such a wonderful atmosphere where people know they can go to be loved and cared for. “We form relationships with our patients and like to get to know their families,” says Rosemarie. They are your support group, your vision of hope, and most importantly – your friends! Nothing is more eye-catching than a genuine, beautiful smile that is boasting with confidence. Unfortunately, with the rising cost of living, many people can no longer afford the luxury of visiting a dentist, and due to unfavorable life circumstances and bad decisions, suffer from poor oral health; in turn causing them to have lower self esteem and a hard time finding a job. The caring individuals at SmileFaith are dedicated to helping these underprivileged individuals turn their lives around and through their Smile Again Program offer their patients hope for their future. Dr. Mike says, “If you give people hope, it is amazing what can happen!” The SmileFaith Foundation is located at 8125 US Highway 19 in Port Richey. timely. The tax laws get updated constantly and it is difficult to keep up with the changes that affect your business and your bottom line. Knowing that a reputable, dedicated CPA like Matthew Potter, is overseeing all of your accounting needs and seeing that your sales tax, payroll tax and federal tax is prepared correctly and on time is very valuable. Matthew A. Potter, CPA is a QuickBooks ProAdvisor – a designation handed out by QuickBooks – and can help you every step of the way offering as little or as much guidance as you need. He provides sales, installation and set-up of QuickBooks as well as training and support. “We focus on your accounting so you can focus on growing your business,” says Julie. “And you can save money in the long run because you don’t have to hire an in-house bookkeeper.” Matthew says, “A lot of people, both individuals and business owners, want the credibility that a licensed person is keeping up with their finances and tax obligations. And, when it comes to borrowing money or selling your business, it is always better to have an independent person handling your accounts.”

If you are looking at starting or buying a business, please consider hiring Matthew Potter to make certain your interest is protected. He can guide you in your decisions and will show you what documents and information the seller should provide to you. Matthew explains, “I had one potential client come in interviewing tax preparers before he bought a business. Before he came in, I researched what kind of business he was buying and what the franchise was worth. He wasn’t even questioning the purchase price of the franchise. We gave him a whole analysis of the purchase of his business, and looked closely at what the business actually had to offer, not just what it claimed. He ended up saving more than $60,000 on the purchase of that business and now we do his bookkeeping, sales tax and full service payroll.” Matthew Potter, CPA, helps those who are starting a new business to get prepared in advance with daily closing procedures and record keeping procedures. “People are excited when they are buying a business and they tend to get emotional,” says Matthew. “A CPA offers an objective viewpoint and unbi-

ased advice.” National Payroll Solutions Another way that Matthew and Julie Potter are helping local businesses and beyond is with National Payroll Solutions (NPS), a payroll company that can provide every service that the big national payroll companies provide. “Many of our clients were using the nationally known companies and the turnover issue was so big that it was causing a real problem for our clients,” explains Matthew. But NPS wasn’t created just for Matthew’s accounting clients; it is a completely separate company. Julie says, “We have clients who are strictly our payroll clients – who have their own CPA or in-house accounting.” NPS offers cost effective payroll for small businesses with one employee up to larger corporations with thousands of employees. No matter what the size or type of company, NPS provides prompt and personal attention customized for each individual client and their own unique needs. Matthew and Julie’s goal with NPS has been to make everything as simple and efficient as possible for their clients. Each business has its own portal and the employer can log in and see all payroll reports and each individual employee can access the portal with their own password and see only their own information. There are several methods of payroll data submission including faxing or emailing hours to the payroll specialist at NPS, or utilize the online payroll entry. Julie says, “Any entry level employee can log in and send us the employee hours.” NPS handles all payroll taxes for their clients; whether local, state or national, taxes are filed and in compliance with a penalty-free guarantee. There are numerous challenges facing

businesses in staying in compliance with the ever-changing tax laws, timely quarterly and annual tax returns and the pressure of having the payroll ready on time. Estimates are that 1 in every 3 small businesses pays the IRS an average of $1,300 per year in penalties and fines due to late tax filings and deposits! With NPS in your corner, that will not happen to your business. Each business can choose how they want to pay employees. NPS offers traditional check printing, direct deposit and pay cards for those without a bank account. NPS will even calculate the payroll and taxes, and let the business owner write the checks. NPS also offers a wide range of affordable benefits, including: Health Insurance, Worker’s Compensation Insurance, Section 529 Plans, Retirement Plans, 401(K) Plans, Cafeteria Plans and Human Resources. Matthew A. Potter, CPA looks forward to helping those in the community – from the individual who wants a reliable, knowledgeable tax preparer to the owners and managers of the small and not-so-small businesses that keep our local economy strong. Matthew A. Potter, CPA has two convenient locations: in New Port Richey at 5940 Main Street, and in Trinity at 2202 Duck Slough Blvd, Suite 102. “Precise Nutrition” Continued from page 1 your doctor recommended you meet with a registered dietitian to help improve your health? Or maybe you’re thirsty for a delicious, nourishing smoothie. Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center has it all. And you won’t find anyone more committed to physical excellence than Mike and Christine. Christine, a mother and wife with a full-time workload, set her sights years ago to be a competitor in Figure competitions. She educated herself on how to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, and her hard work pays off. As an NPC (National Physique Committee) Figure competitor, she has never left the stage without a trophy. Her desire for the sport gave her the motivation to become a certified ISSA (International Sports Science Association) Fitness Trainer as well as a Specialist in Fitness Nutrition. Christine also has a wealth of knowledge in the retail world where she has more than 25 years of experience with a local supermarket chain. Mike served the public for nearly 25 years working for the Pasco County

Sheriff’s Office before he retired to pursue the nutrition and fitness business. He is an accomplished runner, who has completed hundreds of races including eight marathons, countless half-marathons, 10k and 5k distances, and he is a member of the Suncoast Striders. Mike became a Certified Fitness Trainer with ISSA so he can extend his knowledge and passion to clients who want to have a stronger and healthier life. Christine and Mike are committed to supporting a fit community and Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center recently sponsored two local runs, the Rap River and Jingle Bell Runs, both in New Port Richey. Smoothies and Supplements When you first enter Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center, you’ll notice it has a smoothie bar with fresh, healthy ingredients. You’ll likely be greeted by one of Christine and Mike’s five daughters who can make you a 100 percent whey isolate protein shake prepared using REAL skim, soy or almond milk, in one of a variety of flavors. Healthy add-ins includes a multivitamin and mineral blend, antioxidant blend and a weight loss blend, to name just a few. One hun-

dred percent crushed fresh fruit smoothies come in flavors such as strawberry banana, mango tropics, peach pear apricot and acai plus. Mike says that they are not only surprisingly low in calories and packed with vitamins, but have no added sugar, artificial colors or flavors; one 16oz is equivalent to four servings of fruit. Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center also carries a full line of vitamins and supplements (including vegan options), some that are not available anywhere else in the area. With vast product knowledge, Mike and Christine can answer any questions you have about their full line of nutritional supplementation, commonly used in weight management, bodybuilding and sports nutrition. Body Effects, a weight loss product, and Body Storm, a pre-workout supplement, also are unique to Precise Nutrition and Fitness. PB2 is a Weight Watchers endorsed peanut butter in a powder form, with the high calorie oils removed. It can be used in smoothies, shakes, to dip fruit in, or reconstituted with water to make back into a peanut butter thickness. Kids and adults were both fascinated by this product when I visited the store.

Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center also sells products specifically for bodybuilding and figure competitions such as spray tan, Bikini Bite, testosterone boosters and pro-hormones. If the convenience of having vitamins and supplements in the same location as a personal trainer and smoothie bar wasn’t enough, Mike and Christine will also beat any competitors’ printed advertised price on their same product. Personal Training Gets Results! Whether you’re serious about making a change in your workout routine, as either a novice or an experienced athlete, Precise Nutrition and Fitness has the equipment and staff to help you reach your goals. Their state of the art exclusive fitness center has the very best Hoist and Precor brand equipment as well as unique pieces such as a Jacob’s Ladder and a StairMaster (think of a never-ending flight of stairs). Mike and Christine’s ability as certified personal trainers to design programs unique for each person ensure they are more able to focus on their clients’ goals, one client at a time, as compared to the big box factory gyms.

If you’re eager to achieve a personal fitness goal, Precise Nutrition and Fitness Center wants to provide you with nutrition and fitness knowledge to reach those goals. Mike and Christine’s mission is for each guest to reach for personal goals in an exciting, friendly and comfortable atmosphere.

“St. Francis” Continued from page 1 Stephen described it as “peaceful and comforting.” These are not words that are usually used to describe a medical facility. Rose handles all the business aspects of the practice and in recognition of her accomplishments in that regard, for three years the Tampa Bay Business Journal honored her as a Business Woman of the Year finalist, and she was also named a 2011 Business Woman Extraordinaire by Business Leader media. The couple agrees that the health industry is truly a service industry with a focus on helping others achieve optimal health in a compassionate, professional manner. Many patients have expressed their thankfulness to the Averill’s approach, such as Patricia who commented, “I had a kind and reassuring experience there. Dr Averill took excellent care of me.” Patient Judy, whose husband also is a patient, says, “We enjoy our visits here. It doesn’t feel like a doctor’s office. We never dread going. We appreciate the level of care and caring that makes us glad that we

allergy and asthma resource center. Symptoms such as headaches, tiredness or fatigue, irritability, depression, trouble concentrating, memory problems, and difficulty sleeping can all be due to both allergy and/or sleep issues and can be properly diagnosed by Dr Averill who is an expert in both allergy and sleep medicine. Symptoms associated with sleep issues also include: attention deficit disorder, sexual dysfunction, frequent urination at night, difficulty falling or staying asleep, snoring and interrupted breathing during sleep. There are numerous types of sleep disorders and issues, all of which can be diagnoses and treated at St Francis by Dr Averill. Sleep issues affect your quality of life and contribute to many serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, blood pressure problems, diabetes and injuries from accidents. St Francis offers comprehensive sleep care by a Board Certified sleep physician, who can diagnose and treat all sleep issues ranging from excessive wakefulness to excessive sleepiness; including Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, Narcolepsy, Parasomnias and Insomnia. Many people who have suffered for years with restless sleepless nights have found help at St Francis. Dr Suarez, wrote a letter to the Averill’s in which he expressed his gratitude to them for helping his wife who had suffered for over 15 years with a sleep disorder, that kept her up at night and “tired and lethargic” during the day. After her treatment at St Francis, he commented, “Her life has changed significantly. The number of hours of sleep doubled, and the quality of her sleep also improved: less interruptions and deeper quality that

makes her feel more rested the next day. Her life has taken a dramatic turn for the better.” Dr Suarez ended his letter stating that they were, “profoundly grateful for having been put in contact with this high quality professional service.” Not all sleep patients need a sleep study for proper evaluation and diagnosis, but for those who do need a sleep study, they will get a comprehensive evaluation in a very comfortable setting at St. Francis’ overnight and weekend sleep study facility. This beautiful center was custom designed for the utmost comfort of patients. Many patients have referred to St. Francis as “the sleep resort.” The warm, inviting colors and custom built solid dark wood beds, paired with an atmosphere that is calm and relaxing is the perfect place to receive a sleep study analysis. The state-ofthe-art diagnostic testing facility has the same accreditation as a hospital but feels and looks much more like a nice hotel room than a hospital room, which was a goal Rose had in mind while designing the St. Francis Sleep Center. Rose says, “We want our environment to feel homey and comfortable.” Online at the St. Francis website (www.stfrancismed.com) you will find a full sleep resource list to further help answer questions you may have. Many sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, can be caused or made worse by excess weight. With that in mind, the Averill’s created the wellness and weight loss program at St. Francis, which is coordinated by Donna Barbas, who is a certified nutritionist, certified wellness coach, and a certified personal trainer, with a degree in Psychology. The weight loss program offers individual guidance, as well as supplements and

medical supervision. Donna says, “We have a solid program that guides and teaches people to look at food differently and begin the right kind of exercise.” Jane, a patient who successfully lost weight on the program, remarked, “I knew that if I was going to commit to a weight loss program and healthier lifestyle, I would have to believe in and trust the professionals would have my well being as their top priority.” Not only is St. Francis an innovative leading team in overall health involving sleep, allergy, lung and wellness, the facility also is a clinical research center, commissioned to perform various studies that are contracted by pharmaceutical companies. Once a medication is passed as safe and ethical, St. Francis conducts a study involving patients, to investigate specific affects of the medication usage. Anyone interested in participating in a clinical research study may contact St. Francis Sleep, Allergy & Lung Institute. St Francis Sleep Allergy and Lung Institute offers reasonable prices and accepts most insurances and Medicare. Dr. Averill wants everyone to know, “People have a choice in healthcare. You can choose where you get your care and where you want to have tests performed. Our main message is that we are here to take care of the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing in striving to achieve preventive medicine. The individual attention patients receive here makes all the difference in getting a problem addressed and taken care of.” The Averills set out to create a unique place of healing, which provides professional care in congruence with their spiritual beliefs and compassion for people in need of medical guidance. They wanted to create a

place where unabashedly the mind, body and spirit are recognized and honored. Frank and Rose are Christians, a Catholic couple, who have been professed Franciscans for over a decade, and incorporate the St. Francis prayer into their everyday lives and business practices. Dr. Averill says, “St. Francis’ main message was joy.” Both Dr. Averill and Rose incorporate the belief that in helping others, true joy and satisfaction can be obtained in life. In line with their philosophy to help others, over a decade ago, the Averills founded a non-profit charity, “Footprints Ministry,” dedicated to providing new shoes to homeless and needy children. For her volunteer work, Rose has been featured in national magazines and was recognized as the 2010 Volunteer Hero of the Year by Bay News 9 and Outback Steakhouse. Dr Averill receives referrals from other physicians for his medical specialty services, and people can feel free call St Francis Sleep, Allergy and Lung Institute directly to schedule an appointment. Anyone who suffers from issues, such as type II diabetes, weight concerns, snoring, headaches, fatigue, rashes, sneezing, runny nose, trouble concentrating and remembering, or other problems that may be related to sleep, allergy or lung concerns can contact St Francis Sleep Allergy and Lung Institute to receive quality professional care and compassionate caring. St. Francis Sleep Allergy & Lung Institute has two locations: 8133 S.R. 54 in New Port Richey and at 802 N. Belcher Rd. in Clearwater.
