East-West Animal Hospital - Your Other Family Doctor By Alexis Selby For the past year East-West Animal Hospital (EWAH), located in the Tropical Village Plaza on Hwy. 41 in Lutz, has been providing exceptional veterinary care that combines traditional Western veterinary medicine with Eastern veterinary medicine and healing philosophies. By incorporating these two methods of practice EWAH is able to care for your pet in the safest, most effective way possible, utilizing both ancient means of healing such as herbal remedies, massage and acupuncture, as well as more modern methods including vaccinations and medications. “The combination [of

these methods] really maximizes what we can do for your pet,” states Adriana Odachowski, DVM, partner and coowner of EWAH alongside Linda Register, DVM, CVA. “We make a very good team and by providing both Eastern and Western approaches, we bring a new dimension to veterinary care.” Dr. Register and Dr. Odachowski provide state-of-the-art veterinary services for dogs, cats, all domesticated birds, pocket pets, domesticated lizards and snakes. They are both very well-versed in all aspects of veterinary medicine and their passion for animals amalgamated with their extensive knowledge and years of experience in

the field ensures that each pet will be treated with both love and superior, quality care. Dr. Register, a native Floridian, graduated with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 1996. Upon graduation, she went into a private animal day/emergency practice, where she remained for two years. For the next eleven years, until she opened EWAH, Dr. Register provided relief veterinary services for the Tampa Bay Area. A good dentist understands that your smile is more than just having healthy teeth. Health is at the root of everything that matters in dentistry, but to most of us, our smile is a representation of who we are. It’s one of the first things people see when they meet you. That is why at Odessa Family Dentistry, located at the corner of Gunn Highway and N. Mobley Road, they combine comprehensive and affordable dental care with a passion for creating a beautiful smile through cosmetic dentistry in patients of all ages. Shawn Douglas, DDS, is well known by his patients and staff for being a laid back, easy to be around professional who truly loves what he does. He knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a dentist and he never gave up making that dream a reality, even though his passion for art and his studies in that subject tempted him to go in that direction. Community News Briefs Pasco County Students Tour WUSF-TV, Interview Business Leaders On January 19, twenty students from Pasco County high schools participated in Business and Media Day, led by the Pasco Economic Development Council for Youth Leadership Pasco. Students began their day at Rasmussen College in Land O’ Lakes, then traveled to the University of South Florida (USF) and toured the WUSF-TV and radio station. At USF, students had the chance to operate cameras, edit video and role play as on-air talent. Eric Keaton, Pasco County Communications Manager, gave students tips on how to interview and communicate on camera. Following the media tour, students visited the West Pasco Industrial Park where they split into four teams, each visiting a different business: Power Quality International (PQI), Dais Analytic, PharmaWorks, and Smart Sciences. They interviewed the company CEOs and business managers and toured their facilities.

6

“It was a great experience for the students and for us,” said John Hagen, President/CEO of Pasco EDC. “We had several who came away inspired to go into a technical or engineering field.” Hagen is a strong supporter of education in his role as steering committee chair for Pasco County Schools Career Academies, a group of educators and business leaders working together to improve local career and technical education. The day wrapped up at Rasmussen College where students produced their own news casts, including a segment on the business they visited, and a set of commercials to promote Pasco County. Each group was judged by a local panel of judges including Eric Keaton (Pasco County Communications Manager), Robert Singerman (PQI Director of Marketing & Media), Maureen Moore (Saint Leo University Director of Communications), Glenn Hanff (Native Medical Trends), Krista Hakes (Pasco EDC Business Development Manager), and Summer Martin (Pasco EDC Marketing Coordinator).

Pasco EDC, which was an integral part of starting the Leadership Pasco Program for adults, is also a long-time supporter of Youth Leadership Pasco (YLP). YLP is a leadership development program for high school students that fosters an awareness of and responsibility for community involvement, develops community pride, and makes local connections that may further their career plans. “The Youth Leadership Pasco program exposes the students to so many different business opportunities and community and business leaders,” said Rob Aguis, Director of Career and Technical education for Pasco County Schools. “Each year the cohort formulates strong relationships for students—from Anclote High School, to Pasco High School and everything in between.”

Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. Readies Launch of Loan Fund The Pasco EDC, Inc. is taking a bold step to help small businesses in Pasco County. It is rolling out a small business microloan fund to help local entrepreneurs. “Our goal has been to raise $250,000 to help Pasco County’s new

FEBRUARY 2012

and early stage small businesses expand and create jobs,” said Michael Cox, who is leading the Pasco EDC effort. “We have been working on this for several months and are definitely making progress. We think we will be in a position to start lending in 90 days— or less,” noted Cox, who is an Associate Vice President with Wells Fargo Advisors. In addition to helping finance business ideas, the program will include training to help small business owners succeed. “Each year small businesses begin and create some jobs but half of them fail within the first few years,” said John Hagen, Pasco EDC President/CEO. According to the Small Business Administration, the nation’s 23 million small businesses create 75% of the nation’s net new jobs and employ half of all private-sector workers. “Two big reasons for small business failures are lack of money and limited business experience. Our program addresses both of these challenges,” said Hagen. The program will add to the County’s already business-friendly environment for entrepreneurs. The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners is ready to help with $100,000 to fund the program and

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

the Pasco EDC has already committed $50,000. “Pasco County is made up of small businesses and it is important, especially in this economy, that we do what we can to help small business grow,” said County Commissioner Ted Schrader, “I encourage the private sector to partner with us and help with this project.” The Pasco EDC is actively looking for community leaders and businesses that will also donate money to build the fund. The loan program will lend money to small businesses located in Pasco County. “We expect our average loan to be about $10,000 to

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

$15,000,” said Cox. Applicants must be for-profit companies located in Pasco County, and borrowers must show they have the experience and resources to be successful business operators. Proceeds may be used for working capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery and equipment, but not to purchase real estate or to refinance existing debt. Entrepreneurs will also receive free technical assistance to help work through challenges and capture opportunities. Please call the Pasco EDC at (813) 926-0827 for more information or to donate to the fund.

Dr. Kathy and Dr. George also specialize in providing quality diabetic care and their vast knowledge, extensive training and friendly demeanor ensures that you receive the best treatment in a positive atmosphere. Many diabetics suffer from neuropathy, a collection of disorders that occur when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged, causing pain and numbness in the hands and feet and often resulting in the loss of limbs. If you suffer from this terrible disease there is hope, as the Doctors at Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center will work with you and do all they can to salvage your limbs and prevent amputations. “Podiatry plays an integral part of the team approach towards diabetic limb salvage and diabetic care,” states Dr. George. Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center also sells Dr. Comfort shoes, the worldwide leading provider of diabetic footwear. Dr. Comfort shoes are specifically designed with your comfort in mind, hence the name, and are quality shoes that are both stylish and affordable. Feet are something people tend to neglect, and many people don’t realize, but a great deal of diseases, such as coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease, manifest in the feet and ankles, and only later travel to the rest of the body. With proper care and regular check-ups, such diseases can be detected early and in some cases the problem can be controlled before anything major occurs. The doctors attend numerous lectures and conferences throughout the year in order to stay up-to-date with the most current and newest technology and procedures, allowing them to offer unprecedented customer care to

all of their patients. Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center also fits and sells custommolded orthotics, which are specifically designed for each individual patient’s foot. After giving you a biomechanical exam, Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center will provide you with your own unique, custom-fit orthotics that will allow your joints and bones of the foot to be in a more stable position while standing and in motion. Custom-fit orthotics also help to stabilize the weight bearing joints of the legs (foot, ankle, knee, and hip), pelvis, and lower back. Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center performs the majority of their procedures in-office. For major procedures requiring additional extensive care, the doctors do surgery in-hospital. For your convenience, Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center works with four hospitals throughout the Tampa Bay Area, to better serve you. These hospitals are Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, Medical Center of Trinity, North Bay Hospital and New Tampa Surgery Center in Wesley Chapel. Patient Anthony Nash says, “I have had surgery with both doctors and would thoroughly recommend them. They are highly professional and knowledgeable, as well as kind and respectful. Laura, the front desk manager, exhibits warmth and love to all and Natalia and Jena are highly efficient and friendly. Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center is truly an asset to the community.” Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Center is located in the Oakstead Professional Center at 2650 Narnia Way in Land O’ Lakes. This family-friendly restaurant's staff is like one big happy family and welcome guests as if they are also family. The Breakfast Nook is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week. The Nook features an extensive breakfast and lunch menu that offers a wide variety of "comfort foods" made with fresh, high quality ingredients, as well as many delicious selections for the more health conscious consumer. There is ample seating inside the dining room and outside in the courtyard, depending on your preference. Maybe you prefer to be indoors at a nice corner table with your nose in a book, or when the weather is nice you may choose to sit outside and soak up

some sun. Regardless of your preference, there is cozy table at The Nook just for you and your party. There are plenty of tables that will easily accommodate parties of eight or more. When I visited The Breakfast Nook, I chose to sit outside in the lovely courtyard because it was such a perfect day. There are over 20 tables outside with plenty of room, cozy seating, and big umbrellas that offer a shady, relaxing atmosphere. Dogs are welcome at The Breakfast Nook, but Cheryl and her staff ask that you keep them leashed and clean up after them if need be. While dining, my neighbors at the table next to us were accompanied by their charming Springer Spaniel Sadie, who was on her best behavior and totally at ease. If I weren't such a dog-lover, I probably would have never known she was there. Although it was afternoon when I went to eat, I really wanted to have breakfast. My server, Kristin, informed me that it would be no problem because they offer breakfast and lunch from open to close everyday. I had the House Omelette with home

McKitrick Elementary Students Enjoy Learning Through Art Robert F. Kennedy said, “Too often, the arts have been thought of as a nice, but rather non-essential part of education. When we give our children the chance to explore and develop their own creativity, we encourage the sensitivity and ability for self-expression that is so crucial a part of the well-informed, well-educated person.” For the past 12 weeks, eleven 4th and 5th grade students at McKitrick Elementary School in Hillsborough County were given the chance to explore an art medium that is not usually available to that age group. Guided by their art teacher Dianne Hess Zink and glass artist Jay Aalberg, through generous support from the Hillsborough County Arts Council, these students created a 3’X4’ stained glass window of their mascot, the Bobcat. The students, known affectionately as the Bobcat Breakers, worked after school every Wednesday and learned each step of the glass process

from cutting glass to foiling to soldering and finally installing the artwork in an outside window in the main office. None of these students had worked in glass before. Through the process, they learned not only how important art is in our lives but applied the skills they learn every day in their classrooms including math and science. Too often today, the news is filled with negative stories of our young people. The reality is that most of our children are eager to learn, to do the right thing and want to contribute positively to their community. These McKitrick students have learned that they can accomplish even the most advanced tasks when they are given the opportunity. As the former chairman of The Kennedy Center, James D. Wolfensohn said, “The arts must be at the heart of every child’s learning experience if…they are to have a chance to dream and to create, to have beliefs, to carry a sense of cultural identity.”

“Dentistry” Continued from page 1 adult, he combines his love for dentistry and his artistic talents to really help people have healthy smiles that they can be proud of. “I really love working with my hands,” says Dr. Douglas, “and working with cosmetic dentistry allows me to really make a difference in people’s lives.” Meeting Dr. Douglas Dr. Douglas was born in Iowa, and moved to Florida in 1990 when he was just in the seventh grade. Every summer he would visit his uncle who was an Endodontist (which is a kind of dental specialist that deals with the root of the tooth), and he would have the opportunity to shadow his uncle and work with patients. He truly was an apprentice, and when he saw the impact that his uncle had in people’s lives, he knew that dentistry was what he wanted to do. After attending USF and receiving his college degree, he received a Master’s degree in Health and Administration. From there, he was accepted at the illustrious University of North

30

Carolina at Chapel Hill where he attended their School of Dentistry. Dr. Douglas also completed his residency at the University of Florida’s College of Dentistry where he performed fullmouth reconstructions, including dental implants. This opportunity really fueled his desire to do more of this kind of work, and dental implants and cosmetic reconstruction are his focus. An avid traveler, he and his beautiful wife, Jamie, are active members of The Idlewild Baptist Church, and like to travel the world and go on adventures when they are not home with their two dogs Cassie and Bella. They have a zeal for life that shows itself in Dr. Douglas’s practice, and he and his friendly staff make coming to the dentist something to look forward to. Welcome to Odessa Family Dentistry Odessa Family Dentistry is a cozy and peaceful dental practice with an affable staff who take their time when working with their patients. Dr. Douglas took over for Dr. Bill Jackson who retired in 2006, and has renovated the office twice since then. The practice is complete with all of the latest and greatest technology including comfortable chairs, noise reduction drills,

and digital x-rays. “Digital x-rays are ideal because they give off a much lower dose of radiation to the patient; in fact, they are up to 90 percent lower. It is also a lot more diagnostic because, as a dentist, you can manipulate and enhance the image to better diagnose your patients. Also, digital x-rays are ‘green’ and better for the environment, because no chemicals are required to create the image,” says Dr. Douglas. Intra-oral pictures are also a diagnostic tool that Dr. Douglas uses frequently. By taking pictures of the inside of the patient’s mouth, he is able to show them what he sees, and best explain his plan of action and the many options that are available to patients these days. Having a smaller office also allows Dr. Douglas to focus on providing the utmost in dental care. He’s not in a rush, and while he values your time, he’s willing to take all the time that is necessary to make sure that your teeth are at their healthiest. For people who are a little nervous about going to the dentist, Odessa Family Dentistry offers sedation dentistry as well, and he has experience working with those of us who have

previously avoided going to the dentist. He does everything he can to help his patients feel comfortable, even providing cozy neck pillows and blankets so that they can relax while he takes care of their teeth. Cosmetic Dentistry and Total Mouth Reconstruction: Dental reconstruction is the ability to create the smile of your dreams, so whether you are looking to simply create a prettier aesthetic, are missing some teeth, or are looking for an alternative to traditional dentures; Dr. Douglas can dramatically improve your smile. More than a dentist and artist, Dr. Douglas considers himself to be an engineer of the mouth. “Restoring a broken down situation and creating something that will improve function and be a thing of beauty is what I like to do most.” If you have a chipped tooth or ever avoid smiling because you are not proud of your teeth, you should consider cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Douglas can easily repair chipped teeth, hide unsightly gaps, and create a beautiful smile that has straight, brilliant white teeth without the need for braces or

apparatuses. This kind of procedure can be done in as little as two visits to Odessa Family Dentistry. New materials such as ceramics, have taken cosmetic dentistry to a whole new level. Even in the last ten years there has been a marked improvement in the way that smiles can be improved. Now because of these materials can be used in everything from crowns to veneers, a smile can be completely transformed. In years past, if you were missing a tooth, a dentist would create something called a bridge that would place a created tooth that would be attached to the existing teeth on either side of it. While Dr. Douglas can still perform this popular procedure, he can also perform a dental implant. Dental implants are a great alternative in that they create a beautiful and fully functional tooth for the patient. Do you wear dentures? Do they move around on you? Did you know that dentures can easily be secured by dental implants? This amazing new procedure that gives people the ability to eat, speak, and smile again because their dentures stay put. They literally snap in and out of a patient’s mouth, making your teeth fully functional again. Dental implants can bring a

quality of life back into people’s lives that many of them thought they would never have again. “Dr. Douglas restored my mouth with dental implants, which allowed me to eat and speak with confidence again,” said patient William Bonts of Spring Hill. If you are looking for a family dentist who treats patients of all ages, who takes his time, and who has a passion for what he does, visit Dr. Douglas at Odessa Family Dentistry, and take advantage of his $99 new patient special which offers you the choice of a complete exam, x-rays and a cleaning, or a professional take home teeth whitening system. Also, Odessa Family Dentistry accepts most dental PPOs and offers patients low and no-interest payment plans so that everyone can have a beautiful smile. Odessa Family Dentistry is located at 8734 N. BEST Valentine Gift Ever!

Chocolate & Flowers are No Match for an Angel My name is Donna Ferrante and I am the owner of The Cleaning Angels. We are a cleaning service that is located in Pasco County. We also service Pinellas & Hernando Counties and are now expanding into Hillsborough. I am originally from Gorham, a small town in the white mountains of New Hampshire, where hard work, honesty and dependability are part of our everyday routine. Being half Italian & half French Canadian makes for perfection in every way! I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My family has an Italian restaurant that is in it’s 65th year of business and is going into a 5th generation. The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. “We know how to cook, clean and we give 100% to the business.”

Besides the influence of my family, I attribute the success of my company to a determined attitude, a tremendous amount of ambition and meticulous attention to detail which is all accompanied by an unstoppable drive. After 14 years of cleaning on my own, I now have a team of great girls that I refer to as “My Cleaning Angels”. Move over Charlie, Donna has Angels too! We are not the everyday cleaning service, as many of my competitors are; we are an extremely detailed cleaning service. Using the basic principles of mutual respect combined with good old-fashion elbow grease, the angels produce homes with a heavenly sparkle. Our customers love our back-tobasics, old-fashion cleaning techniques. From top to bottom, corner to corner, and everywhere in between. As owner of this business, I know what my customers are looking for and what they expect from a cleaning service. They want a detailed cleaning, but one that is also affordable. I make sure that my “Angels” have enough time to spend in each and every home, to get the proper job done. We go to extra lengths such as removing knobs from your stove, cleaning the light bulbs in your vanity, getting in between the tight space of your washer and dryer, the dust that accumulates above your medicine cabinet, and even the tracks of your sliding glass doors. If you would like a FREE estimate, allow us to make your life easier by giving us a call today. We offer weekly, biweekly, monthly, move-in and move-outs. If you’re unhappy with your current service or if you’re looking for the best, call The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service today at 727-942-8289. We are Licensed, Bonded and Insured.
