Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Catholic Church Breaks Ground for First Home of Its Own Just recently a groundbreaking ceremony for St. Peter the Apostle’s temporary structure took place adjacent to Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery. It will be the Catholic Church’s first home of its own, and Reverend Dennis Hughes, says the temporary building would be called the parish center. Wearing his vestments and a blue hardhat, the pastor, Reverend Hughes was accompanied by diocese officials Elizabeth Deptula and Rick Kolhoff, whom also picked up shovels and joined him for the groundbreaking ceremony. The church will have meeting rooms, offices, and a worship center that will allow the church to expand existing ministries and begin new ones. The worship area will seat about 600. The building is just a temporary structure, says Hughes. “There is every expectation,” he adds “that one day the

4

parish will build a permanent church.” More than four years ago, in January 2008, Reverend Hughes held his first Mass at Trinity Memorial Garden’s funeral chapel. At the time, a temporary structure was planned on what was to eventually become the Catholic Church’s permanent site. The permanent church was slated to be built on a 61-acre expanse of undeveloped land southwest of S.R 54 and Gunn Hwy. adjacent to Trinity Memorial Gardens. But then a downturn in the economy foiled the Reverend’s plans. As masses continued to be held at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rev. Hughes called it the Catholic Community In Trinity; and then a competition of sorts was held to determine the church’s permanent name. The winning name: St. Peter the Apostle. The initial congregation of 200 grew to 475. Trinity’s funeral chapel was unable to hold that number. A larger space was needed. So, in 2009 the parish moved to a rented storefront in

the Trinity Village Shopping Center strip mall at the corner of S.R. 54 and Duck Slough Blvd. Shortly after moving into the shopping center, the parish began a capital campaign to raise the funds needed to build a parish center. The campaign’s slogan is “Built of Living Stones,” from the First Epistle of St. Peter. When the parish started the capital campaign, its organizer said it could take about five years to raise the $1 million or so needed to meet its share of the project funding. The diocese has pledged to loan another $1 million. Diocesan leaders say it typically takes $5-8 million to build a church. But the donations have come in much faster than expected, including a windfall gift from a neighboring parish, St. Ignatius of Antioch Roman Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs. Back in the 1980s, St. Ignatius started a savings account to fund a mission in the East Lake area. That mission was never started, so under the leadership of its pastor, the Reverend Joseph Pellegrino, St. Ignatius of Antioch decided to donate those dormant funds to St. Peter the Apostle. As a result of their help, it has taken just over a year

to surpass the $1 million goal. Gulfside Regional Hospice Honors Veterans A pioneering campaign has been developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is called the We Honor Veterans Program. More than 1,200 hospice programs throughout the United States participate in the We Honor Veterans movement. There are four levels in the program, with only 43 hospices having reached Level 3 status, and nine reaching the pinnacle Level 4. Gulfside Regional Hospice is the highest-level hospice in the Tampa Bay area now. In order reach Level 3 status in the We Honor Veterans program, Gulfside Regional Hospice had to meet stringent requirements that will improve care to veterans including: continually educating staff about veteran-specific issues; integrating veteran content in both staff and volunteer orientations; usage of a military history checklist during the admissions process; and developing, implementing and evaluating procedures to help veterans and their families receive vet-

eran benefits. “It may surprise people to know that 25 percent of those who die every year in the United States are veterans,” said Linda Ward, Gulfside’s president and CEO. “Through this program, we are providing our veterans specialized end-of-life care for unique issues they might face, including post-traumatic stress syndrome.” Gulfside has also integrated a special pinning ceremony into its care for veterans. “The pinning ceremony is so poignant,” said Ward. “I have attended several at Gulfside’s Center for Hospice Care and the entire group of Gulfside staff usually end up in tears because they are so moving in recognizing the special service to our country that patient has made.” Since Gulfside began the We Honor Veterans program in June 2011, more than 105 veterans have been served through it. VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center By Diane Galemmo “We consider ourselves the solution to your New Year’s resolution,” says Shidoshi Louis Hurtado, owner and master instructor of the VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center, located at 2409 Merchant Avenue in Odessa, just behind the Trinity Spine Center off S.R. 54. If you’d like to have fun, meet new people, get your body in excellent shape and reap the many benefits that come along with practicing martial arts, there is no better time than right now. VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center is presently offering a New Year’s special until the end of February where one can save $100 off the registration fee, 10% off the tuition and a free uniform. VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center teaches MMA (mixed martial arts), which is a blend of Japanese, Korean, Filipino and Muay Thai martial arts, along with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which, aside from being a martial art, is a very effective self-defense system that focuses on grappling (ground selfdefense). The school, called a dojo, has multi-class capabilities with two training rooms housed in the 6,000sq.-ft. training center. VIP also offers private lessons. A Master Instructor Shidoshi Louis Hurtado has been training in the martial arts since 1967. Shidoshi, who was born in Manhattan, was a freshman at La Salle Military Academy on Long Island when a colleague was attacked by a group of local bullies who left him with injuries that included a long gash across his face. That incident inspired Shidoshi to kick start a martial art club, together with a

10

group of his schoolmates. He successfully launched it, but that was just the beginning. His goal was to open his own school. He did that in 1975 in Deer Park, New York, in a move that would be the start of a very fulfilling career. Shidoshi Hurtado opened the VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center at Mitchell Ranch Plaza in Trinity in 2003 and, due to expansion needs, relocated to the present location in Odessa in May 2006. He has five gifted and highly-skilled certified Black Belts on staff. As a master instructor, Shidoshi is constantly supervising, if not personally teaching on the floor. Besides martial arts training, his staff receives additional instructor training on how to become superior martial arts instructors. Shidoshi says, “Putting on a Black Belt does not make anyone a qualified instructor.” As a high-ranking certified Black Belt instructor, Shidoshi Hurtado strives for perfection in himself and his Black Belts and he leads by example. He was inducted into the “Battle of Atlanta” Hall of Fame in 2009. He is a retired member of the New York City Police Department and during his career he has served as a personal body guard for numerous dignitaries and celebrities, among them: Sean Connery, James Caan, Elliot Gould, Audrey Hepburn and Tony Orlando. Shidoshi Hurtado is an advisory board member for the U.S. Martial Arts Association, an international organization which requires him to network and consult with schools throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Shidoshi also works with children with special needs such as autism,

Jen says, “Karate has always been on my radar as a great way to exercise. I did Tae Bo at home and loved all the kicking and punching. Add to that, self-defense techniques and belt levels – I was hooked! My husband George always thought it would be something he would like to try, to pursue a black belt, a great accomplishment! As a mom, I love that VIP values discipline and manners. We want our boys to be gentlemen, to always be polite, open doors for women, and give up their seats for women and the elderly. VIP encourages honesty, integrity, and self-control. My boys also are learning to follow direction, and to work both individually and with a team. Both of my older boys are a part of the VIP Leadership Team and its Demo Team that performs at local functions. They are learning great life skills that will help them become great future leaders.” The McCoys, who live in Trinity, say that, “hands down, VIP has the best instructors.” Shidoshi’s slogan is ‘The Family that Kicks Together, Sticks Together.’ “That seems to be true for us,” says Jen. Odessa residents Neha Amin and her two daughters Monic, 15, and Heather, 11, have been devoted stu-

dents for six years at VIP. Monic and Heather both competed in numerous tournaments throughout the U.S.; winning most tournaments in their division. Through dedication, hard work and their great training at VIP, they were rated number one in the nation on the tournament circuit in 2011. Both girls and their mother, Neha, have earned their Black Belts at VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center. Mom speaks proudly of her daughters who are both straight A students. Monic was a first-place winner in Pasco County’s Math Contest for two years running (2008-2010). “Our training with Shidoshi,” says Neha, “has kept my relationship with my daughters very close.” Shidoshi says, “We create a wellrounded student and we require report cards to make sure they are applying what they learn here to all other areas of their lives. We encourage parents to give us feedback on their children’s activities and behaviors outside of the dojo because, as we stress, their progress is dependent on not only their physical training at the dojo, but also their ability to apply – everywhere – the discipline, focus and behavioral training they receive here at VIP.”

VIP Classes Lil Ninjas—(ages 3-4), teaches behavioral skills, confidence and how to follow directions in a fun environment. Kiddie Karate—(ages 4-5), places more emphasis on training, the ability to focus and in acquiring the discipline and the self-respect needed to recognize unhealthy peer pressure. While the class is structured with discipline, having fun also is very important. Black Belt Training—(ages 6adult), VIP Karate’s award-winning program is designed for men, women and children. It offers its participants the opportunity to build focus and discipline, plus it is an exciting and enjoyable way to stay fit. The goal of this program is to guide and promote its members to the coveted rank of Black Belt and beyond. Children and adults train separately due to the distinctive needs of each group. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)/Cardio Fitness—Safe, fun, and it burns hundreds of calories in a class. MMA is a complete system that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques. VIP’s MMA program is a blend of boxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing and karate. Not only is it a lot of fun, it is a very effective self-defense. How long does it take to earn a Black Belt? “If you are right on target,” says Shidoshi, “It takes about four years, working three days a week, to achieve first degree Black Belt. No matter what shape you’re in or what your confidence level is, through VIP MMA training the progress is all up-

ward. Your children will walk with confidence, attain better grades in school and become leaders in tomorrow’s world. And the adults will walk with more confidence and get in the best shape of their lives.” MMA training also empowers individuals. Shidoshi explains, “We believe all our students should have great stand up and ground self-defense skills. Arm bars, leg locks and submission holds are all part of our exciting MMA Program. It’s been said that the majority of all attacks ultimately end up on the floor, making it necessary for a person to be knowledgeable in floor defensive techniques. People think that martial arts are all about fighting, but the truth is I’m not training fighters, I am training people to be better human beings than when they first walked in the door.” In addition to the great classes offered at VIP, there are also opportunities to just have fun. “At VIP we strive to make our school a center of activities for our students by offering special events such as pizza nights, parents’ night out, sleepovers, BBQ nights and more, all of which serve to encourage and instill great socialization skills.” He adds, “We also believe in giving back to our community by doing fundraisers for local schools such as free self-defense courses and offering scholarship programs to families without the means to pay for martial arts classes. Just recently, along with the Sheriff’s Department, we co-sponsored a free ladies’ domestic violence seminar which was well attended and informative.” VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center is a great place to have a birthday party for your child, even if they aren’t a student at the dojo. Birthday parties include games, a karate class and snacks/pizza. VIP Black Belt Champions Training Center is located at 2409 Merchant Ave. in Odessa (behind Trinity Spine Center on SR 54). 1988,” says loyal and longtime customer, Steve. “The owners are very knowledgeable and helpful. I am into scale RC boats. I live on the east coast, over two hours away. When I was trying to find a kit that was out of production for about 15 years, I knew who to call. Yeah, they had it – brand new in the box! This store is one of the last great ones. I visit every chance I get over to the west coast. Don't pass up the chance to see this place or meet its owners. You will not be disappointed.” Bob and Barbara agree that the best part of running House of Hobbies is being able to satisfy their cus-

tomer’s needs. Barbara says, “It is especially rewarding to have the many followers from multiple generations visit our shop. The smile on a father or grandfather’s face bringing in a child, indicating that they received their first hobby from our shop is what keeps us still enjoying our business.”

The tradition that can be built through the love of a hobby is something to share with someone you love. Sharing your hobby is all part of the fun, especially when you can spark the imagination within a young child! House of Hobbies is a place to enjoy your personal hobby and find exactly what you need. Whether you’re looking for a beginner’s project, expert advice or parts/paint to complete your hobby, House of Hobbies is the place to go! Is the New Restaurant in Trinity that is Serving Up Something Special By Julie Kanehl Take everything you know about breakfast and lunch and kick it up a couple of notches, because there’s a new restaurant in town and it’s anything but ordinary. Conveniently located next to Bealls in the Pasco Square Mall plaza on S.R. 54 just west of where Rowan Rd. and Seven Springs Blvd. meet, Toast is more than a cute name for a breakfast nook, it’s an upgrade and a twist on all of our favorite breakfast and lunch favorites. Upgrade? Twist? How about some beignets with your breakfast N’awlins style? How about trying what they’re famous for, which is a toast(ed) sandwich, like their Mammas Toast, which has meatloaf, cheddar cheese, onion rings and tomato aioli! Want to escape to Greece for the day? Then you need to try their Soutzouki platter, because it’s the real deal.

18

That’s not to say that you can’t get your “faves” just the way you like them, because of course you can. Their menu is just the right size so as to provide everyone with something they’ll love, without sacrificing quality for quantity. Want a classic burger? Looking for the best tuna melt in town? Just feel like some blueberry pancakes? You’ll find it all at Toast. First and foremost, Toast is a family restaurant. Owned by a husband and wife team and their family, Toast is a labor of love and the culmination of generations of people who simply love to feed people. Stefano and Gina Mouratos truly love this restaurant and have given every detail their attention, and because it’s a family affair, the atmosphere is clean, friendly, bright and personal. The Mouratos are well known in the community. Stefano was born and raised here and his parents have owned

restaurants and delis nearby for as long as he can remember. Growing up in restaurants, he was always drawn to them as an adult even as he pursued other careers. A jackof-all-trades, Stefano is one of those people that you instantly like because of his passion for life. Working multiple places and in many different fields, Stefano is well known by many because Toast has breakfast to satisfy your sweet tooth he is also a server at two other restaurants nearby, ment to providing fantastic meals and including the Outback Steak House in combined it with the places that have Trinity. Charms Palm Harbor with its Ambiance and Style By Julie Kanehl If you are looking for a great place to go with your spouse or group of friends for a night out, look no further than Positano’s Ristorante Italiano in Palm Harbor. Located just East of US Hwy 19 at the corner of Lake St. George and Tampa Road in the Shoppes at Cloverplace plaza, Positano’s is just minutes from East Lake, Odessa and Tarpon Springs. Positano’s Ristorante Italiano has undergone a lot of changes in the last year, largely due to its new owners, Harry and Jiske Ong, a husband and wife team who are fulfilling a life-long dream of owning their own restaurant. Harry redesigned the restaurant himself and added a wood-burning oven

26

at the heart of the place so that he could create authentic Italian pizza and breads. Otherwise keeping with the original menu, which is top-notch, the Ongs have focused on making changes that effect the quality and the authenticity of the food, bringing in fresh ingredients from as far away as Italy, adding a truly unique wine list, and offering an array of homemade desserts. Harry and Jiske Ong have been in the hospitality business since they met while working at a hotel near The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where they went to school. Jiske was a foreign exchange student from Holland who became the Assistant Director of Catering when Harry was the Director of Cater-

While they didn’t date while they worked together, they fell in love, and they have been together ever since. Married 23 years, and their two children off to college, the Ongs decided it was time to try their hand at their own restaurant. Wine and Dine at Positano’s What is Italian food without wine? menus at Positano’s. One is a Reserve list which offers a lovely array of fine wines ranging in style and vintage for the true wine enthusiast, and the other is an extensive list of wines of all kinds that are all offered for one price. “Our wine list is a pretty unique concept,” says Jiske. Harry says, “Wine lists can be intimidating and confusing, but when you take the price out of it you can

From left: Filet Mignon, Mozzarella Caprese, Stuffed Pork Chop, Shrimp Sophia Positano’s Ristorante Italiano features a fine menu, a full bar, delicious specials and Neapolitan style pizza just focus on what you really like.” He adds, “We offer 28 wines all at one price - $8 per glass and $29 per bottle. Many of these wines are around $50 per bottle at other restaurants, so this is an amazing value.” The antipasto or appetizer offerings include Stuffed Mushrooms and Bruschetta, Calamari and a wide variety of seafood, and the house salad included with each entrée is a favorite. Jiske says, “Many people who claim not to like salads finish their entire plates!” The entrée menu at Positano’s is straight forward and chock full of impressive options from traditional Italian fare like their Filet Mignon, their Chicken Parmigiana and their Penne ala Vodka, to dishes such as their Veal Positano, which is veal scallopini dipped in egg batter and sautéed in white wine and topped with prosciutto, tomatoes, spinach and fresh mozzarella cheese; their Shrimp Sophia, which is sautéed in garlic, white wine, black olives, sun-dried tomato and fresh basil and then topped with feta cheese; and their Veal Saltimbocca Alla Romano, which is tender veal sautéed in a marsala demi glaze sauce, layered with fresh baby leaf spinach, mozzarella cheese, and prosciutto di Parma. The homemade lasagna made with fresh pasta is a popular choice at Positano’s, as well as the veal. They also have a limited chil-

dren’s menu. “Veal is king at Positano’s,” says Harry. “We’ve made some changes to the menu, like making homemade roasted garlic butter and garlic rosemary infused olive oil for our guests, and making more items from scratch. It’s the same menu as before but with an upgrade in ingredients.” No Italian meal is complete without dessert, which is why Harry and Jiske decided to make sure that ample time and effort go into each tasty dish. Desserts include their homemade Tiramisu, their Pumpkin Crème Brulee, and Jiske’s favorite-a Limoncello Cheesecake, just to name a few. Lindsay Ramey who comes to Positano’s a few times a month with her family says, “I really love their Penne ala Vodka. You have to try it.” Pizza Like the Neapolitans Make It The newest item on the menu is pizza, which is why the Ongs have added a wood burning oven at the center of their restaurant. It takes more than a wood burning oven to make a real piece of pizza, in fact it takes an expert, and Harry has been specially trained by award winning Pizzaiolo, Tony Gemignani, who is considered one of the best pizza chefs in the country for creating Neapolitan style pizzas. Every night you can find Harry manning the wood burning oven at the center of the restaurant. “My intention was not to turn

Positano’s into a pizza place, not at all, but I wanted to add to the ambiance and offer our guests the opportunity to get a quick pizza and a glass of wine, and the response has been really nice,” says Harry. Many customers come in and order a pizza as an appetizer, and then order their favorites from the menu. Others make a meal out of Harry’s pizza. Harry uses only imported “double zero” flour, which is a finely ground bread flour that is perfect for making the perfect pizza dough. He also imports true San Marzano tomatoes, olive oil, and fresh mozzarella from Italy. Add some sea salt and sauce made from those same San Marzano tomatoes, add one highly-trained pizzaiolo and you’ve got yourself one nice pizza pie. “It’s all about using the best ingredients and cooking at a high heat and getting that perfect combination of chewy and crispy. Actually,” says Harry, “I’ve had to modify my pizza a little bit, because our customers prefer to have their pizza a little more crispy than the Neapolitans like it. Our customers come first, so I make it the way that they like it.” Party The Night Away Open 7 days a week for dinner, Positano’s offers live jazz entertainment three days a week, a full bar, an

extensive wine list, a daily happy hour from 4-8 p.m. and Early Bird specials from 4-5:30 p.m. making Positano’s a great place to eat any night of the week. In fact, many locals frequent Positano’s Ristorante Italiano on a very regular basis. “We want to say how lucky we are with our clientele. The loyalty is just remarkable and we are really grateful,” says Jiske. In addition to offering a great dining experience, Positano’s has a private dining room that seats 42 people comfortably. This lovely room is available for Christmas parties, bridal or baby showers, corporate events, and small receptions. Do you like Italian for lunch, because I know I do! Coming soon: lunch hours at Positano’s Ristorante Italiano! From appetizers to desserts, pizza to pasta, Positano’s Ristorante Italiano lives up to its name and serves up beautiful meals at an affordable price. Positano’s Italian Ristorante is located at 3309 Tampa Road, in Palm Harbor, Florida. They are open Monday-Thursday 4 p.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 4 p.m.10 p.m., and Sunday 4 p.m.-8 p.m. For more information or to make a reservation visit www.positanoPH.com , or call 727784-9100.

Thousand Oaks Town homes By Lennar: Luxury New Homeownership for Less than Rising Rent It’s no secret that rental costs are on the rise, apartment vacancy rates are at all time lows and quality, affordable, places to live in Trinity are few and far between. Apartment complexes have begun to sprout up in the area as the demand for low cost housing in Pasco’s premier city of Trinity is increasing. Trinity is known for many things: Convenience to local shopping, such as the new Mitchell Ranch and Trinity Village shopping centers; excellent school systems with Seven Springs Middle School, Trinity Elementary School, Trinity Oaks Elementary School, and Mitchell High School – Go Mustangs! Far lower property taxes than our neighboring counties of Pinellas and Hillsbourough. Convenience to all metro areas via the Suncoast Parkway, McMullen Booth Road, and the newly expanded State Road 54 making downtown Tampa, the airport, and the beaches minutes away! If fact, Trinity is a diamond in the rough, and amidst all the negative press about the economy, the housing market, and rising unemployment rate, the Trinity and local area seems to be bucking the trend. Bob McCaffery, a top local Realtor with Century 21 who works and lives in the Trinity area states, “We have seen an increase in rental rates during the end of 2011 and continue to see rental rates rise in 2012. The demand for rentals has also increased which is adding to the rise in rental rates. For clients that do have the ability to purchase, buying is less costly than renting.”

Residents of Trinity are starting to see the growth in the area as new businesses are starting to emerge. From the ‘Now Leasing’ sign on the Trinity Town Center, the opening of the New Medical Center of Trinity hospital, and the hour long wait times at some of the most popular restaurants in the area on Friday and Saturday evenings, the local Trinity economy seems to be bustling with activity. What does all this mean? THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO PURCHASE A NEW HOME IN TRINITY THAN RIGHT NOW, AND THE TOWNHOMES AT THOUSAND OAKS BY LENNAR OFFER THE BEST VALUE IN THE TRINITY AREA BAR NONE. Thousand oaks Town homes offer luxury and affordable homeownership opportunities with monthly payments LESS THAN RENT! Twice in the last couple of weeks the local newspapers have had positive front page, headline, articles about housing in the local area and the local economy. All of these are indicators that the TIME TO BUY IS NOW. Certified Financial Planner Scott Papes Helps Trinity Residents Prepare for the Future By Julie Kanehl The cornerstone, or foundation stone, of a building is the first stone. It is the first step in creating a structure that will be there for many years, and that will provide protection to those inside the finished product for generations. This is the hope that we have when we save our money. We hope that we will be able to create something that will protect ourselves and those we love for many years to come. This is the theme of Cornerstone Financial Planners in Trinity. Cornerstone Financial Planners is located in the Walker Professional Center, just north of S.R. 54 on Little Road by the Mitchell Soccer Fields. The office is warm and friendly, and staffed with a group of professionals who are focused on building long-term relationships with their clients. Cornerstone Financial Planners is a full service investment firm that

38

provides a myriad of planning services such as financial planning, estate planning, estate document management, estate conservation, tax planning and retirement planning. Investment options at Cornerstone Financial Planners range from CDs and Money Markets to Stocks, Bonds and Annuities. At Cornerstone, each investment portfolio is as unique as you are, and with a gamut of retirement services that range from IRAs and Roth IRAs to guidance on your 401k and Pensions and Profit Sharing Plans, clients can trust that they are in good hands. Cornerstone Financial Planners also provides insurance services that include life insurance, different kinds of annuities and long-term care insurance, which sets aside money in the case that you would require care at a facility for the disabled or the chronically ill. Saving and planning for the future is one of those things that many

people put off because they are focused on today’s tasks, today’s issues, and they are busy living each day as it comes. But, what are those people going to do when the time comes to retire? Think about how fast the time has already passed by. In a blink you could be there. Are you ready? Do you have a plan in place? If you do have a plan in place, have you looked at it lately? If not, then it’s time to come in and meet the folks at Cornerstone Financial Planners Because Experience and Integrity Matter Most. Meet Scott Papes, CFP® Cornerstone Financial Planners was created to better help families make smart decisions with their savings and plan the future for themselves and their children. Cornerstone Financial Planners has been making a difference in people’s lives for years by helping them follow their dreams and reach their goals.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

President Scott Papes, CFP®. Scott has been in the financial industry since 1988 and really has a passion for what he does. Raised outside of Cleveland, Ohio, Scott received his degree from Penn State in Management and Economics. After spending some time in Boston, he came down to Florida in 1998. Scott is proud to be a CFP® and says, “To be a Certified Financial Planner you have to take a series of classes and tests, as well as ongoing education, that gives you a greater depth of knowledge about the financial planning process and tools and how to apply that knowledge to my clients.” While some kids wanted to be baseball players and doctors and lawyers, Scott always wanted to be a broker. He says, “I find this field to be interesting and dynamic.” While things have changed in the financial industry due to obvious changes in our economy, Scott says that changes in technology and the tools available haven’t changed the personalized service that Scott prides himself on providing to his clientele. Prior to joining Cornerstone,

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Scott was a Vice President and Regional Director at a large national investment company, but there are many benefits for clients who work with independent broker dealers, like Cornerstone Financial Planners, and that is what Scott wanted to be able to provide. Scott says, “The benefit of working with an independent Broker/Dealer like us is that we have very few limitations on the kinds of products that we can use. We have access to basically everything. There isn’t anyone above us asking us to push our clients into anything in particular. We can completely customize your investments.” More than that, Scott has seen people get lost in the shuffle with their financial firms before, and he takes pride in really being able to get to know his clients individually, and spend the time with them that is necessary to really understand what their dreams and financial goals are. Scott says, “Consultations are free and a consultation is kind of like a first date.” He adds that it’s important to get to know one another and create that relationship because creat-

ing a financial portfolio is a very personal and personalized process. Once there’s an understanding, your financial advisor will want to see everything from your current investments to your insurance policies, and even your will and trusts. “All of these pieces come together,” says Scott. He views himself as a ‘financial doctor,’ of sorts, saying that he takes a look at what you have and then makes a recommendation using the technology and the many tools available to him, combined with years of dedication and experience in financial investing to come up with a plan to help clients work towards a healthy financial future. “My clients are also my friends,” says Scott. “I just happen to do their financial investments as well. To me, the person is more important than the firm.” The Cornerstone Makes the Difference The cornerstone of important buildings is often ceremonial. It’s often inscribed with information about the architect, the dates when the building was constructed and

completed, and is essentially the heart of the building. It represents the dream of its creator. We have the opportunity to create a financial legacy within our lifetime. With proper guidance, we can be ready for retirement, set aside money for our children’s college funds, save for cruising to Europe, or whatever our dreams may be. We can do these things if we start now, work with someone who understands that our goals are unique, someone who takes the time to know us and who knows the importance of building a strong financial portfolio that will last a lifetime and beyond. Find that and more at Cornerstone Financial Planners in Trinity.

Cornerstone Financial Planners is located at 4625 Little Road in Trinity. Hours are Mon. – Fri., from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., appointment recommended although walk-ins are welcome. For more information, please call Scott at (727) 375-1112 or visit the website at www.cfpfl.com.

Mitchell Graduate Named Best Actress at Independent Film Festival By Diane Galemmo

J.W. Mitchell High School graduate Laura Alexandra Ramos, 24, was named Best Actress for 2011 at the annual Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival for her lead role in the movie Nerve. In this seriocomedy about social anxiety, a young man battles his social anxiety with the help of a female psychology student (Ramos), and ends up with more than he bargained for. The film will make its second screening at the New Filmmakers Film Festival in New York on March 12. As a sophomore at J.W.Mitchell High, Ramos fell in love with acting and was a regular in Mitchell High plays as well as Richey Suncoast Theatre musicals. Laura attended the University of Central Florida and earned her bachelors in Film-Cinema Studies in 2009. Her

42

first acting job was as a character at Disney World. Ramos will next appear in an independent film by Richard Rossi, who wrote and directed Baseball’s Last Hero: The Roberto Clemente Story. In it she plays Sister Rachel. The film is about the late Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer. Clemente was touted as the greatest right fielder of all time, as he faced and overcame the racist reporters of the Pittsburgh Press; he struggles to prove his talents despite the baseball writers conspiring to cheat him out of his due recognition. The film was completed December 20 and is scheduled for theaters this fall. Ramos’ hope is to get a part in episodic television or a TV pilot. For the moment, she works in sales and promotional modeling for liquor and beer companies.

Medical Center of Trinity Is Open To Patients!

At 7:05 a.m. on Tues., Feb. 7, Robert Frank was the first patient to enter the doors of the Medical Center of Trinity. He, along with several other representatives of the hospital, cut the red ribbon to officially open the new hospital to patients.

By Diane Galemmo

The Medical Center of Trinity has implemented its move plan and has relocated all patients at Community Hospital, with the exception of the mental health patients, to the new hospital’s main campus located at 9330 S.R. 54 in Trinity. Community Hospital is now known as the “West Pasco Campus of the Medical Center of Trinity; mental health services, outpatient therapy and outpatient physical services will remain at that location at 5637 Marine Parkway in New Port Richey. The Patient Move Plan was developed with the guidance of Healthcare Transitions, a national organization with 23 years experience guiding hospitals through a patient move. They, along with the healthcare team at Medical Center of Trinity, Pasco County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medfleet and AMR Ambulance Services, had been preparing for this day for nearly 12 months.

Three Trinity Sisters Skate Their Way to Success By Diane Galemmo The 10th Annual Presidents Day Roller Skating Invitational took place Feb. 18 and 19 at SpinNations Skating Center near the corner of Ridge Road and Congress Street in Port Richey. With 30,000-sq.-ft., SpinNations Skating Center is Florida’s largest hardwood-floor skating facility. At the annual event, the two days are packed with official USA Roller Sports events as well as many beginner events. From Tiny Tot to World Class, competitors between the ages of 4 and 80+, come from artistic clubs within the State of Florida as well as Georgia and Indiana. Event coordinator Angie Serini says, ‘’I have 155 first entries (skaters may be in more than one event). Any skater who holds an amateur card with USA Roller Sports can enter this competition. I have invited 5 out-of-state judges and one from St. Pete who are all on the national panel (meaning hold an “A” commission and can judge the U.S. Championships). At least one or more hold an additional

50

commission making them eligible to judge the World Championships.” Medals are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Serini adds, “We also run beginner events for kids coming right out of class who are not holders of amateur cards. These are unofficial events so that the kids start to see what competition is all about. We have some 30 local kids from Pasco involved.“ Three skating sisters from the Foxwood subdivision of Trinity – Mikayla (age 9), 3rd grade at Trinity Elementary School; Julianna (age 6), 1st grade at Trinity Elementary School; and Alexa (age 4), Preschool at Discover Point – participated in the event. Both Mikayla and Juliana have been champions in different divisions. Julianna currently holds Southern Region’s first-place titles in Roller Figures & Freestyle Singles in the Tiny Tot Division (all children 6 & under). She competed against both boys and girls from the Southern Region comprising the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missis-

sippi and Alabama. Juliana also holds the 3rd place title in Roller Dance. Mikayla has many trophies and ribbons to show her accomplishments. During the last competition season, she was classified as a Primary Skater (ages 6-8) and at the Southern Regional Competition she won 2nd Place in Freestlye, 2nd Place in Figures, and 3rd Place in Dance. Alexa competed in her first meet at age 3 and continues to compete in Tiny Tot Freestyle events. The girls started roller skating in 2009 and practice 3 days per week at SpinNations with their coach Melissa Quinn. For most skaters this event is the prelude to the Regional Championships held later in the summer, and the venue where they may qualify for Nationals. It gives skaters the opportunity to test out SpinNations spacious coated maple floor. They also get a chance to be scored by national panel judges, the same judges who may be judging their event at the nationals. Viewers are welcome for a $5 fee. “Dental” Continued from page 1 Cosmetic Dentistry about 3 1/2 years ago in February 2008, where it continues to thrive and grow under the care of this popular and friendly dentist. Born and raised in nearby New Port Richey, Dr. Thompson and his family moved to Odessa a year ago and he has settled in with a desire to raise his family in the same beautiful landscape of his childhood. He chose the location for Thompson Dental wisely as it is conveniently located near and central to many communities including New Port Richey, Tarpon Springs, Trinity, Odessa, Lutz and Land O’ Lakes. And, being so close to the Suncoast Parkway makes it convenient to folks in Spring Hill and Tampa as well. Dr. Thompson attended Florida State University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in biological science in 2000. After spending a year working with his father in his dental practice, he then attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree in 2005. He is proud to be a second-generation den-

tist serving the Tampa Bay area. He is an active member in local, state and national dental organizations such as the West Coast District Dental Association, West Pasco Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He also is a member of The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, which is dedicated to advancing excellence in cosmetic dentistry and encouraging the highest standards of patient care. As for patient care, Dr. Thompson treats his patients with the same respect he would want to receive from others. “It’s very important to me to listen to the patient and tailor treatment plans to meet their specific needs and desires,” explains Dr. Thompson. “I say, ‘Here is what is available and here is the treatment plan that you absolutely need for your dental health. Not everyone can afford cosmetic dentistry and not everyone wants it. It is all up to the patient. I really listen to the patient.” He will tell you though, that he loves the impact that cosmetic dentistry makes, as he told me when I asked what aspect of his job he loves most. “I enjoy the before and after – you can change their life in a single visit,” says Dr. Thompson.

Dr. Thompson can drastically change your teeth, making you proud to smile.

Exceeding Dental Standards Thompson Dental in Trinity is a state-of-the-art facility that meets and surpasses all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and CDC (Center for Disease Control) standards. The office is decorated with warm earth tone colors that make you feel at home, and at ease. In the waiting room you can help yourself to refrigerated water or even a granola bar as you watch TV. The treatment rooms are equipped with relaxing massaging dental chairs where you can tune your personal television to any program you desire. Dr. Thompson explains, “The extra comforts like the chairs and televisions ease fears and tensions for children and adults. It eases people’s minds not to hear the noises associated with the drills, which

helps calm people. We also offer nitrous and a level of conscious sedation.” Some of the services available at Thompson Dental include bonding/white fillings, bridges, whitening and bleaching, and overall care for optimum dental health. A bonding is a composite resin that is used as an alternative to amalgams and veneers. This is an excellent cosmetic option for patients who do not want the look of silver in their mouths or the expense of veneers. Bondings can be used on teeth that are decayed, cracked, or stained. A bridge is an option for deciding how to deal with a missing tooth or teeth; a necessity since tooth loss can affect the way you eat, speak, and the alignment of other teeth in your mouth.

Thompson Dental’s massaging chairs and personal TVs help make patients feel at ease.

Whitening or bleaching can help teeth that have been discolored or stained over time and Thompson Dental offers a variety of choices for whitening with the latest technology. In addition to the meticulous cleaning, polishing, and examination of your teeth, Thompson Dental also takes the time to help patients develop proper

oral hygiene habits at home. They make suggestions for preventative measures such as dental sealants or night guards to protect against grinding and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders. Research supported technology is an important part of Dr. Thompson’s dental practice. Digital x-rays allow the doctor to get a much better view of your teeth and potential dental conditions. The digital imaging software allows the doctor to see a number of different views of the tooth to gain a better understanding of the proper course of management. Digital x-ray is an excellent diagnostic tool that decreases radiation to the patient by up to 80 percent over traditional dental x-rays.

Invested in Community Dr. Thompson cares about the people who live and work in his community and he makes an effort to reach out and help through several organizations, which he finds is one of the most rewarding parts of the job for him. He says, “I do charity work for

Give Back A Smile which provides dental care and reconstruction for domestic abuse survivors. Big cases like that change someone’s life. It makes you feel good, and the patients are very appreciative.” He volunteers for Donated Dental Services (DDS), an organization that works with the underserved population to provided much-needed dental work. “I am partnered with the School Board as well to help those children who can’t afford to go to the dentist or who have parents who won’t take them,” shares Dr. Thompson. “There are times when a child has to go to the nurse at school with a toothache from an abscessed tooth.” Dr. Thompson also partners each year at Halloween with Treats for Troops and donates all the candy from his “Candy Buy Back” to the troops overseas. Invested in the community and their patients, Dr. Thompson and his staff offer exceptional dental care and will accommodate all of your dental needs, and desires, giving you something to smile about after every visit. Conveniently, you can request an appointment on-line through their web-

site, and receive newsletters via e-mail. Reminders of your dental appointment can even be sent to you as a text message, as your convenience is very important to Dr. Thompson. He says, “I don’t like people waiting on me. I know that my patients’ time is important and I try very hard to see people on time.” Thompson Dental accepts most major insurances and is happy to submit all insurance forms for you to help you recover the most from your benefits. Payment plans with a payment schedule are available for patients who require major work. Forms of payment accepted by the office are check, cash, as well as MasterCard, Visa and Discover, and interest-free financing is available for those who qualify through Care Credit and Fifth Third Bank. Thompson Dental at Trinity, Family and Cosmetic Dentistry is located at 2202 Duck Slough Blvd., Suite 104, behind Outback Steakhouse in Trinity. For more information or to book an appointment, call 375-2000 or visit www.trinitysmiles.com. Office hours are Mon. – Thurs., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and every other Fri. from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
