From The Editor Alexis Selby

Thank-You Westchase Area For The Overwhelming Response! I would like to start off by saying a gigantic thank-you to all of our wonderful readers, who have so warmly welcomed us into the neighborhood and took the time to write us and let us know what they thought of our first publication. Since our paper hit mailboxes, we have had a tremendous response from our readers, who have had only great things to say; and the emails keep on coming – this really means a lot to us. After putting all the names of the people who responded in a random drawing, we have picked three winners who will receive gift certificates to some excellent local businesses. In no particular order, the winners are Jay McVay, Ruth Cook and Eileen Smith. Take a look at what they had to say about the Westchase Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles: Jay writes, “I received the inaugural copy of Neighborhood News for the Westchase Area and cannot say

how happy I am to have a publication that promotes local businesses and covers community news. It is very well written and the layout is excellent. More importantly, I appreciate the local advertising and have found three new businesses in my area that will keep my dollars in the local economy. Thank you for creating this new publication for our area. I look forward to the April edition!” “Yesterday I received a copy of your new Neighborhood News in my mailbox,” writes Ruth. “Ordinarily I would automatically pitch this type of thing in the wastebasket. However, I was impressed by the sleek layout and figured I'd give it a look and see. I read it cover to cover and much to my surprise, it was very informative and the ads were nicely done.” Eileen writes, “My copy of the Neighborhood News arrived yesterday. What a great magazine! Congratulations on your expansion into

Westchase Area Neighborhood News

Westchase - Thanks and keep them coming.” We really enjoy hearing what you have to say, and encourage you to continue writing us and letting us know how we are doing – we truly appreciate your feedback.

Opera Tampa presents Aida Aida, Giuseppe Verdi’s grandest of grand operas, will be presented in the Straz Center’s Carol Morsani Hall, April 20 and 22, as part of the Opera Tampa season presented by Homes by Helen. The opera tells the story of Aida, princess of Ethiopia, captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. Radames, a high ranking military commander, is torn by his love for Aida and his duty to the Pharaoh, with tragic consequences for both.

First performed in Cairo in 1871, Aida has come to be the most popular of all of Verdi’s operas and one of the most loved of all Italian lyric dramas. The gorgeousness of the coloring in its pictures, the kaleidoscopic succession of brilliant scenes, the ballets, processions, the glitter of court life and “the pomp, the pride, the circumstance of war” unite with its music to make it an opera for the people as well as for the more conservative connoisseur. The fluent melody of its score appeals to popular taste, while the technical skill shown in the arrangement of its general plan and the harmonious disposition of all its details arouse the admiration of the most critical observer. Aida will showcase a stunning international cast, as well as the Opera Tampa Orchestra and Chorus. In his final appearance as Opera Tampa’s founding artistic director, Maestro Anton Coppola conducts a company that features Rosa D’Imperio as Aida, Gustavo Lopez Manzitti as Radames and Stacey Rishoi as Amneris, as well as Gustav Andreassen as Ramfis, George Cordes as the King of Egypt and Mark S. Doss as Ethiopian King Amonasro. Joachim Schamberger will direct the production. Aida will be

Making Your Money Work For You By Alexis Selby Founded in 1922, Edward Jones has been a trusted name in the financial industry for nearly 90 years, and to this day remains one of the very few privately held brokerage companies – meaning all ownership of the company is held by the employees. This makes a huge difference in the culture of the company, as financial advisors aren’t willing to take inappropriate risks with your money, as so often happens in company’s where employees do not have invested interest. Edward Jones is one of the nation’s largest suppliers of financial products for individual investors and with more than 10,000 offices throughout the country, has more branch offices than any other brokerage firm in the country. At Edward Jones their mission is to provide quality tongterm investment opportunities that include a broad mix of municipal, government and corporate bonds as well as mutual funds, common stocks and tax-advantaged securities. Michael Tormey, the financial advisor at the Edward Jones Westchase office, has more than 23 years of pro-

fessional experience as a certified broker and has grown up in this business his entire life, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a financial advisor. “I grew up with an awareness of what the industry was like,” states Michael. “This is what I know and what I need to continue.” After doing research in Genealogy, a hobby of his, Michael actually found that he came from a long history of brokers and investors, dating all the way back to the early 1800’s. Michael says, “I guess you can say it is in my blood.” Michael has been a registered financial advisor since 1989 and is extremely educated in all facets of the investing world and is constantly researching the most effective ways to put your money to work. He is very focused in what he does and has dedicated his life to helping people attain their monetary goals. Christy Gibilisco, the branch office assistant at Edward Jones Westchase, has been working for Edward Jones for nearly two years and provides you with a warm welcoming, and with her friendly demeanor and charismatic personality will instantly put you at ease the moment you walk through the

doors. Michael prides himself in building strong, long-lasting relationships with his clients, and to him, being a financial advisor is more than just handling their money. “I get involved in all aspects of peoples lives,” states Michael. “I am there for all of their life-changing moments, providing guidance under both great circumstances and unpleasant circumstances.” Over the past 23 years, Michael has built many trusting relationships across the country. In fact, over one third of his client-base lives in a state other than Florida, a majority of which he has never even seen face-toface. Michael says, “If you treat people well, they will be confident in referring other people to you.” This just goes to show how great a financial advisor Michael really is and the power of word-of-mouth, as almost all of these clients were either related to, or friends with one of his other clients, who because of their positive experience referred Michael to them. Because of Michael’s dedication to his clients, ethical integrity in regards to their money and vast knowledge of the financial industry, he has retained almost all his

Michael Tormey clients, some of which have been with him from the very beginning. “If I have someone as a client,” says Michael, “they will be here with me for the long haul.” Michael works with people in all stages of life, both young and old, yet all with one thing in common – they either have something to work with or are committed to obtaining something to work with. At Edward Jones, they find that most of their clients’ concerns directly relate to what they refer to as the five primary needs, which are preparing for retirement, living in retirement, paying for education, preparing for the unexpected, and planning

Gentle Pet Passings - The Most Loving Decision

By Kathryn Samaltanos The benefits of pet ownership are widely accepted and are thought to include companionship, relaxation, improvement in the quality of life, production of a more home-like environment and increased socialization amongst people. Pets can help to combat loneliness, increase feelings of security, and can be a source of unconditional love and concentrated affection. So when it becomes clear that your pet is suffering and there is no hope that they will regain their health, euthanasia can be the most difficult, yet most compassionate and peaceful option. No one understands this more than Gayle Burrell, DVM, of Gentle Pet Passings.

“Saying goodbye to your beloved friend is a loving but difficult decision,” shares Dr. Burrell. “Circumstances are often too stressful for either you or your pet to make the trip to your veterinary clinic. To provide comfort during this difficult time, in-home euthanasia is an option that I am privileged to be able to offer.” Dr. Gayle Burrell has had a passion for animals for her entire life. “I don’t remember there ever being a time when I didn’t have a pet,” she explains. Her love of animals became clear as I sat down with Dr. Burrell in her home. I was warmly greeted by two Umbrella cockatoos, several cool cats and an African Gray parrot that stayed in the other room watching us from a distance – all of whom live together in harmony. Though she has been a veterinarian for over 14 years and she clearly has a passion for animals, it took Gayle awhile to finally pursue her career in veterinary medicine. “I am

somewhat of a ‘late bloomer’,” says Dr. Burrell. “I worked as a paramedic/fire-fighter for many years. The guys (from the fire department) were my biggest supporters, so I was in my thirties when I finally went back to school to pursue veterinary medicine.” It was actually a friend from the fire department that made her choose her path in offering in-home pet euthanasia. “A friend of mine asked if I could come to their home and euthanize their terminally ill dog,” Dr. Burrell explains. “They knew that this was the kindest option for their dog and they wanted to avoid the cold sterile environment of a veterinary office.” Dr. Burrell realized that this service offered her friends comfort and relief, and in addition, it offered grace and dignity to their beloved dog in her last moments. Tim Pilson, Dr. Burrell’s husband and the Training Chief for the Palm Harbor Fire Department, has been her biggest champion. He says,

“Gayle has such a gift when it comes to animals; they have always been her first love. I call her Dr. Doolittle – it’s like she knows what they are thinking. I have been with her on a few of her in-home calls and I am always amazed at her ability to put the animals and their owners at ease. They are always so relieved and grateful for her services.” Dr. Burrell’s clients Kathy and Renee agree, “As our 90-lb., twelveyear-old Blue, a Weimaraner, was aging before our eyes, our major concern was to keep him in his home when his final moments came. We did not want him or us to experience the confusion, upheaval, and commotion of taking him out of his home to a vet’s office. We were comforted by the fact that Dr. Burrell would come to our home when requested. Upon her arrival, we found her warm and caring. All our time and concentration was on Blue and making his passing as effortless and peaceful as possible. Whether

you have a large or a small animal, we are highly recommending Dr. Burrell to assist you at this difficult moment.” The decision to help bring your suffering pet’s life to an end, no matter how calm and peaceful the process may be, is still a terribly hard decision and can feel like a betrayal of trust.
