By Dara Tucker Receiving superior quality craftsmanship in your home can add value to your house and pride in your investment. Finding a trustworthy company to do the work can feel overwhelming, but with Yeager & Company Flooring, it doesn’t have to be. In addition to

flooring, the company is a state licensed general contractor and has both a licensed electrician and a plumber working with the company. They can take care of almost every need you have for remodeling your house, including painting. In all my years as a homeowner I have never been more pleased with a company’s service and end product in my house as I have been with the work completed by Yeager Flooring. Nearly 70 years ago Pearson Yea-

ger, Sr. opened the first Yeager & Company on March 13th, 1944 in Philadelphia, beginning a family business and a tradition of integrity that has been passed on through three generations. James “Jim” Yeager runs the company with the same basic belief that was instilled upon him from his grandfather. Jim says that integrity is more than being fair, more than being honest. He believes integrity is a commitment to do the right thing that comes from within. It’s like the golden rule: treat others as you would have See “Yeager” on page 32.

Join in the Fight to End Cancer From The Editor Kim Thomas The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in SunLake and surrounding areas – community leaders, cancer survivors, caregivers, anyone wanting to make a difference – to join their Relay For Life of SunLake. The organization is seeking volunteers who are interested in getting involved in the fight against cancer through fundraising in their signature fundraising event, the Relay For Life. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. The events are held overnight to honor and symbolize a cancer patient’s journey through treatment. A Relay Team is a group of 12 to 15 people, led by a Team Captain, who commit to raising at least $100 each and participating in the overnight event fundraising event. All of the proceeds raised through the Relay For

Life fund the mission of the American Cancer Society to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. While teams do the majority of their fundraising prior to the event, many teams also hold creative fundraisers at their campsites during the Relay For Life which creates an 18-hour festivallike atmosphere. “The Relay For Life is all about our community uniting with the American Cancer Society and supporting its efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” says Jason Arigoni, Event Chair. “Volunteers and participants who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event are making a commitment to let SunLake, and surrounding areas, know that cancer can be defeated.” Funds raised at Relay For Life of SunLake help the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer. In 2012, Relay For Life events across the great state of Florida raised over $20 million to help cancer patients and their families in local communities and to fund lifesav-

ing cancer research. The American Cancer Society save more lives by helping people stay well, get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. “The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of SunLake will be going to all new levels this year,” says Arigoni. “With a combination of new leadership, national and local corporate sponsorships, and a growing community involvement, we are on our way. Although on our way, we could definitely use some help with this volunteer led event. We welcome you to join us in the fight against cancer today!” To learn more about the Relay For Life of SunLake and to sign up your team, attend the next Team Party, or visit www.relayforlife.org/sunlakefl. The next Team Party will be held on February 13th at 6:30 PM at Beef O’ Brady’s of SunLake, located at 18835 SR 54 in Lutz. The Team Parties are an opportunity for all teams to come together and learn about fundraising and the mission of the American Cancer Society. Everyone is invited to attend.

This beautiful jewelry store sells some of the most recognizable jewelry brands in America including Simon G., Pandora Jewelry, and Frank Reubel, just to name a few. Convenient to the entire Tampa Bay Area, MacKinnon Jewelers is located at the corner of S.R. 54 and Little Road, on the north side of Trinity’s Mitchell Ranch Plaza. MacKinnon Jewelers provides the quality jewelry that the customers in our area are looking for, making it the perfect destination for anyone on your holiday list. He and his experienced staff are extremely gifted at helping people pick the very best presents, and their knowledge for their inventory in gemstones, bridal sets,

watches and more is unparalleled. Tom’s passion for creating jewelry began during high school when he was hired at a jewelry store in Panama City, Florida. It was there that the manager of the store recognized a talent in Tom, and where Tom began to learn the art of jewelry repair and jewelry creation. After high school, Tom moved to Sarasota where he worked with a wellrespected designer named Terry Coffrin. Tom was Coffrin’s apprentice for five years, and during that time he both taught and challenged Tom, allowing him to grow as a jeweler and as an artist. In 1985 Tom began to work at his bench performing “trade work,” which allowed him to do repairs and to create jewelry for stores in his area. He worked as a jewelry manufacturer for four years, and managed a trade shop for five years before he became a jeweler for Littman’s Jewelers at Countryside Mall. He worked at Littman’s Jewelers for eleven years and in 2004 opened MacKinnon Jewelers. Tom continues to pursue his education, has recently earned his Diamond

Degree, his Pearl Degree and is working on earning his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Tom MacKinnon and his experienced staff, which includes Debbie

Brain Balance of Oldsmar Shares Stories of Success It is a natural thing for a parent to want the very best for their child – to dream of their future and imagine it filled with smiles, happiness and success at every stage of life. So when it becomes clear that a child is going to have problems meeting the milestones that their peers are having no problems with – that the intricacy of their brain doesn’t fall into the “norm” – it is heartbreaking for the parents and the child. Sometimes it isn’t clear to parents that anything is wrong until their child starts school and their confidence level starts dropping as they struggle to perform in a world where they are expected to fall into place with the rest of the class. That is when the search begins for a way to help a child learn and grow; to achieve success despite their individual challenges. Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Road, is an achievement center designed to help children who have been labeled with or who exhibit signs of ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s syndrome,

16

Tourette’s, learning disabilities or processing disorders. As the statistics for such conditions have grown exponentially over the last two decades, many parents have been given very little hope that their children will ever be able to grow properly and learn to succeed. Brain Balance offers hope and success. Owner and Director Larry Polnicky is a parent who knows firsthand how it feels to search far and wide for a solution. He opened Brain Balance in Oldsmar because the Brain Balance Center in Atlanta, Georgia was the best solution he and his wife found for their son who has autism. In fact, it seemed like the only thing that did work. Since opening the Brain Balance in Oldsmar, the Polnicky family has known much joy, not only in seeing the growth and success of their own child, but in seeing the difference Brain Balance is making for local children and their families by helping them to succeed beyond the label, without medication, and with proven results.

Personal Stories of Success at Brain Balance The following stories are personal stories that parents are willing to share about their children and the help they have received at Brain Balance. Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and Brain Balance would like to thank these folks for sharing such heartwarming stories with our readers. Respecting their privacy, we are not using full names. Soaring through Reading Levels––“My son was assessed for a new school today,” writes JF. “He was to start 4th grade. His reading comprehension level put him at 7th grade. I am thrilled. Six months ago in August he was just below 4th grade [level]. I know that Brain Balance has made the difference in his reading comprehension scores.” Calm, Focused & Learning––CS shares, “We have noticed our son is calmer, and if something does bother him, it is very short lived. He is transitioning better. His teacher has commented on how calm and focused he’s become. He’s had great

days at school because of the great staff at Brain Balance! We are very excited to see how much more he will achieve. His music teacher said he never raised his hand in class until today. He asked for the drum and played and hummed a classical piece of music that the teacher recognized right away! Thanks!” Travel Time is Well Worth It–– “We drive 2 1/2 hours one way and our son is worth every minute and mile spent on the road. Just 20 sessions and my son’s reading fluency and word reading has markedly improved. We are so proud of him! He loves coming to Brain Balance. His confidence has improved greatly too J. Thank you to such an awesome team of professionals who understand and care about children with learning challenges. It’s also a soft place to land as a parent. Thanks again!”_ KP Off Medication––“He is off all his meds,” shares parent JC. “He is losing weight and getting better sleep. He has been acting out some still. His primary care doctor is

going to try to find something natural for him. She has also recommended him getting counseling. He is more affectionate. Has a tutor and should be through with 9th grade by the end of June. He will have the opportunity to opt out for anything he can test out for.” Self-Aware and Socializing––DW writes about the great things that her daughter is experiencing after attending Brain Balance. “Here are just a few of the wonderful things that Brain Balance has done for Danielle. Most recently Danielle has stopped taking her “brain pill” as she called it. This was medication to help with focus. So far no negative effects noted from not taking it! She is eating better, exercising more, and requires less sleep. Physically

stronger…she recently did a ropes course, climbed a rock wall and did zip line. “She is calmer and less impulsive. This has been noticed by others is group settings and social gatherings. (It’s not just MY opinion!) She is controlling her voice level better. (Not as loud.) And is SELF regulating her actions more because she now has self-awareness. Conversations now on a more mature and age appropriate level. She is initiating social interaction on a more meaningful level at home, school and church. She is interacting and bonding with peers and building friendships and developing a more appropriate sense of humor. She has begun journaling in the form of art and short stories or comic strips. She is better able to grasp intangible concepts such as religious beliefs. What more could you ask for! But I know there is still more to come!” Great Strides Forward––TB of St. Pete writes of her daughter, “We went snorkeling off Grand Cayman and Cozumel - and she did fantastically! She kept track of all her gear, was able to navigate the reef with ease, and had

the time of her life swimming with the dolphins! What a trip!” Her mother’s letter also noted that Angela had made the high school bowling team. “She started her average (without bumpers) was around 29. With only two weeks of practice she’s up to a 55 average, and we’re looking to break 100. Her coach is wonderful and her teammates embrace her and cheer her just as they do each other. Tears came to my eyes the first time I saw her roll that ball right down the center. “Her exit testing wasn’t all that great - but then Angela has never been a test taker. She shuts down, and I don’t know if that will ever change. But I do know that these stories I relate to you, as well as many other “intangible” changes in her life are without a doubt related to her Brain Balance training and learning. Anecdotal or not, this girl has made some great strides, and we’re more excited than ever about her moving forward and being able to live a fulfilling, happy life. Thank you to your whole [Brain Balance] team - from the moment we walked in to the suite until we left we felt positive energy coming toward us.”

The Brain Balance Mission The Brain Balance Mission Statement is “to make the Brain Balance Program available to as many children as possible, that each child may reach their greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.” In order to do this, education is key. The directors, coaches and founders of Brain Balance really want parents to understand that there is hope, that there can be success, and that their children have bright futures ahead of them regardless of labels or limitations. Brain Balance offers free informative events for parents to come and learn about the details of the program and to see if it’s a right fit for their family. Guests who attend the free event are given a discount on the initial assessment. Call for details. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6. Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes - Making Life a Little Sweeter By Dara Tucker Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened the original store in Trinity, off Old CR 54 in February of 2010. Jessica worked for The Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Florida for over 13 years. Jess was versatile in many of the daily resort operations, but primarily focused on food and beverage, which is her passion. As a mom who lives locally in the Trinity area, she initially wanted to open an affordable neighborhood ice cream shop that caters to the budget of the average family. She never thought the demand of her sweet treats would have her baking full time and leaving the job she was loyal to at Innisbrook. Cupcakes were originally intended to be a side item, or an alternative to ice cream, and were first baked in her toaster oven! When Jess sold over 300 cupcakes the first week of her business, she knew she would need a larger oven to keep up with the demand. Word of mouth

18

and a Facebook page spread the news, as well as the popularity of such TV shows as DC cupcakes on TLC and Cupcake Wars on Food Network. Little could Jess have imagined that three years later word of her delicious cupcakes would lead to a total of three stores, serving Eastlake/Palm Harbor, Trinity/New Port Richey, and Lutz/Land O’Lakes areas. Sugardarlings serves between 15 to 20 different flavors of cupcakes daily, and they bake throughout the day to keep the customers smiling, and

their sweet tooth satisfied. Jess’s Award Winning Peanut Butter S’mores was just recently honored The Best Cupcake in St.Pete, and locally Sugardarlings was voted Best Dessert, Best Kept Secret and Best Bakery in the Suncoast. The cupcake taste combinations are both delicious and fun.

“Yeager” Continued from page 1 others treat you. Likewise, work for others as you would work for yourself. He adds, “Integrity demands that we protect your home and personal property as it were our own…that a job has to be done to our satisfaction before we deem it complete. That if something is amiss with a project, we’ll fix it without having to be asked.” Jim explains, “Prior to going to work for us every employee is background checked, and rechecked yearly. As a participant of Asktheseal.com our customers are e-mailed a picture of who’s coming to your house, so you know who to expect. We have a staff of professionals, who know the business, and are experienced in their field.” In addition to Asktheseal.com, Yeager & Company has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and has been awarded the Angie’s List Superior Service Award in 8 categories for the sixth straight year. As a state licensed general contractor, Yeager & Company installs flooring such as hardwood, laminates and tile. They install cabinets, and use

an in-state manufacturer, which help keep costs down. Other services include painting, installing windows, doors, crown molding, baseboards, chair rails, pavers, popcorn ceiling removal, and knockdown application. With a licensed electrician, plumber, and interior designer working with the company, Yeager & Company can take care of most everything inside of your house. Jim and his employees know how to work within your budget to help you get the look you want to achieve. For example a recent customer wanted a new glass door, and Jim was able to add glass to her existing door so she could enjoy the same look, but within her set price. When we knew we wanted to have tile removed and hardwood and carpet laid down we shopped several stores who we thought would have the most competitive prices. We even received a quote for tile removal from a family friend who does it for side work. Yeager not only beat or matched everyone’s prices (including our family friend), but they also had a much better selection. We were also able take advantage of their 12-month no interest plan available to qualified buyers through a third party lender.

Yeager & Company has all types of quality flooring at its showroom We picked out three different woods and laminates at the Odessa showroom and distribution center. Then our salesman brought samples to our house so we could see how they would look with our lighting. Once we saw it in the house we knew we wanted the more expensive hardwood, so our

home uncovered during the project. He was certainly not obligated to help me with this and did what he did, not because he was obligated to do so, but because he is a good man. I cannot recommend this company highly enough and would happily use them again. Don’t waste your time looking for anyone else. You can’t go wrong with Yeager.” Whether you’re looking for a full remodel or just need flooring, Yeager & Company has you covered. Jim says it best, “I know we won’t get every job we quote. Every job we do and sealed all the areas in advance. Our floors were expertly laid down. The quality of our hardwood and how it is adhered to the floor makes nearly everyone who comes into our house for the first time, ask who did our floors. In the first six months that we had our carpet, we noticed it was wearing unusually quickly. I called Yeager & Company and was surprised that a sales person came the same day to look at it, take pictures of it, and sent them to the manufacturer. We were reimbursed for the cost of the carpet and applied it to new flooring.

I was completely impressed with how Yeager & Company stood behind their product. Jackie Kovilaritch says, “My experience with Yeager & Company in general, and specifically Jim Yeager himself, was incredible. Jim Yeager is a rare find these days in so many ways. He is a man of his word and his integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail is second to none.
