Adopted Pets Bring a Little More Love to Your Life Thanks to the many volunteers who work in local shelters and who provide fostering in their homes for puppies and kittens, people like me (and maybe you too!) can find beautiful, well-adapted and loving pets to bring home and cherish. If you think that you have room in your home and in your heart to welcome a new family member that will bring a lot of love into your life, then visit the local shelters and/or start doing a little online research. Petfinder.com and Adoptapet.com are two good sites that offer an abundance of information about pet shelters, rescue groups, pet adoption facilities and much more, such as a checklist of questions to help you decide if adoption is right for you and what type of pet will best fit your lifestyle. The Humane Society and SPCA have plenty of healthy, happy pets to bring home and both facilities welcome visitors. Last year, I visited the SPCA Suncoast in Port Richey

(spcasuncoast.org) and came home with a silky black kitten with green eyes that the whole family has come to adore. The boys dubbed him Honey Badger and somehow the unlikely name fits him perfectly. Nothing bothers him and he fits right in! Our German Shepherd became the best nanny a kitten could want. The great thing about adopting a pet, besides getting a loyal and loving companion, is that for a minimum adoption fee, your new pet is neutered or spayed, is provided all of their shots, and at SPCA Suncoast they are even micro-chipped. When my daughter Katie decided she was ready to adopt a puppy, she searched rescue agencies online and researched the various breeds to find a companion pup that would fit right into her life. She wanted a boy and she wanted to name him Tank. Wouldn’t you know? She found a gorgeous little boy, already named Tank, and decided it was meant to be. Tank was fostered by volunteers with FARR (Florida Re-

triever Rescue), who took him and his siblings in when they were only four weeks old and gave them excellent care and a lot of love. FARR put Katie in touch with a local Tank veterinarian who works with the organization to provide vaccinations and spaying/neutering. At 12 weeks, Tank is brilliant! He sits, shakes, lies down, rolls over, and plays dead dog already. Every time Katie walks him people ask what kind of dog he is and she’ll just say, “A happy one!” Pets are a big responsibility. Before you decide to adopt, make sure that you can make the commitment to keep your pet healthy with regular visits to the veterinarian, that you have the time for them and that your home will accommodate their needs.

Medical Center of Trinity Announces New Single-Incision Minimally Invasive Option for Gallbladder Surgery The technology of robotics combined with a single-site incision provides patients with a more comfortable, virtually painless gallbladder procedure. Medical Center of Trinity is proud to announce that it now offers Single-Site Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), using the da Vinci Surgical System. General surgeon Keith Chisholm, MD has performed the first procedure done in Pasco and North Pinellas Counties. Traditionally called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the now minimally invasive robotic procedure combines the technology of the da Vinci System with a single incision through the patient’s belly button. “Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this new technology allows for a single incision in the belly button where instruments are placed and

the diseased gallbladder is removed”, said Keith Chisholm, MD, General Surgeon, who uses the da Vinci surgical system for other surgical procedures. “This single-site incision is approximately one inch long and allows patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery; typically less bleeding, less pain and a quicker return to activities, with almost no visible scar”. Most people who require gallbladder removal are candidates for the robotic, single-incision surgery. According to the American College of Surgeons, surgery is the recommended treatment for gallbladder pain from gallstones and non-functioning gallbladders. During the surgery, doctors view a magnified, three-dimensional image of the surgical site while sitting at a console next to the patient. The doctor then controls four robotic arms, which extend and enhance his ability to maneuver in smaller spaces. “The magnification and three-di-

mensional optics of this surgical system along with added dexterity using the special instruments help the physician perform the operation in a safe, efficient manner. Patients are pleased with both the ease of their physical recovery and the fact that they aren’t left with large scars”, said Dr. Chisholm. Prior to the da Vinci single-site cholecystectomy, gallbladder surgery required several incisions underneath the ribcage, at the belly button, which left patients to face longer recoveries and more scars. Incubator for Business Start-Ups Becoming a Reality in Pasco County The Dade City Commissioners showed support for entrepreneurs by approving $50,000 to launch Pasco County’s first business incubator. The incubator will be located in the Dade City Business Center and managed by a team led by the Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. “With the actions last night of the City Commission and approval of the incubator plan by the Pasco EDC Board this morning, the Dade City Incubator project takes a huge step towards reality,” said Jimmy Adcock,

Regional Manager for Tampa Electric People’s Gas. Adcock is one of several Pasco EDC board members who have been working over the past year to develop the project. Saint Leo University has offered to partner with Pasco EDC and the new business incubator to provide technical assistance to start-ups. Dr. Michael Nastanski, Dean of the Donald R. Tapia School of Business at Saint Leo University, said, “The incubator completes a long-term objective for the School of Business to deepen our support to the local business community and provide opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in creating new businesses.” The Dade City Business Center is a turnkey location that Pasco EDC will be able to use to help start-up companies or early stage businesses grow, add jobs, and obtain technical assistance. The goal is to support the entrepreneurial community in Dade City and Pasco County and help these start-ups become successful local businesses. John Moors, Executive Director of the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, is excited about the opportunity, commenting that the incubator project “represents a fantastic

opportunity for Dade City in job creation, promotion of our community as “open for business”, and supporting entrepreneurship.” Moors added, “We look forward to working with our partners in promoting this new growth while maintaining our unique, old Florida sense of community.” Pasco EDC is a non-profit organization that promotes economic development in Pasco County, Florida. Pasco EDC continues to be a strong partnership funded by corporate and public investors focused on the economic vitality of Pasco County. “Put On Your Pink Bra” Event Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point was recently thanked by the American Cancer Society for their contribution in making this year’s American Cancer Society “Put On Your Pink Bra,” making strides against breast cancer event a huge success. This year’s leadership team included Diane Ricca, Jackie Ruth and Jackie Massey. Together the team raised $2,625. Jackie, Diane and Jackie all participated in the walk. Jackie Ruth and Diane Ricca are both cancer survivors. Ms. Ruth is a one year survivor and Ms. Ricca is a 25

year survivor. In its letter to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point the American Cancer Society emphasized that making strides against breast cancer is one of American Cancer Society’s signature events. Participants come to walk for breast cancer awareness, celebrate breast cancer survivorship and remember those who have been lost, while raising money to fight cancer. In 2012 over $188,000 was raised to fight breast cancer and provide hope for all the people in the communities fighting this disease.

An Interview With Author Shelly Arkon When she was nine, Shelly Arkon's mother advised her not to write a novel because no one would publish it…but she wrote it anyway. Shelly Arkon has never stopped writing since she wrote that first novel as a child. In spite of more family drama than most of us could handle— as the mother of five daughters, drama is unavoidable––she's been writing most of her life. She says most of these stories, written in longhand in spiral notebooks, have been about vampires. She now lives in New Port Richey with her husband and two dogs. She’s also a member of Florida Writer’s Association and Writer’s of Mass Distraction. Currently, she’s working on a book series. It’s about two grandmothers, one a New Age hippie, and the other, a Southern Baptist, their grandbaby, their grown children who are pill heads, their extended dysfunctional family, and a dangerous drug dealer. The two grandmothers find themselves in a dangerous pursuit to save their grandbaby while finding an

unlikely friendship between them. Interview Why do you write? There is a constant chatter going on in my head all day. Ideas and dialogue come quickly where I have to write them down. If I don’t, I may miss an opportunity to get it down the way I heard it the first time. Even characters get perturbed when you don’t relay their information correctly. They want their stories told in the right way. Not to mention, all of my characters bug me until I do-I have a tendency to work on multiple projects at a time. Can you explain the trials and tribulations of writing your first novel or writing in general? There’s a ga-zillion of those. My first set of trials and tribulations began in the first grade when teachers stuck me in a slow class because I couldn’t grasp reading and writing like the other kids in my class did. One afternoon, one of teachers handed me a stool, an eraser, and a piece of chalk. I was to write, say each

letter, and my name over and over. First grade through the third were the most tedious years of my life. But I’m thankful to all my Shelly Arkon teachers for their patience and persistence. By the fourth grade, I was further ahead than most my classmates in reading and writing along with my big love for both. Once I took off in reading and writing, I read everything I could get my hands on. And I had an affinity for diaries, spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, and daydreaming. My imagination ran wild with stories and poems. I wrote non-stop as a child and teen. Unfortunately, there were people and even myself who discouraged me from writing. Many times I heard ‘no one would publish you’ or ‘there’s nothing special about what you write’ or ‘so-n-so writes way better stuff than

you do.’ Negative self-voices are the worst. So you have to find your positive self-voice to talk you out of the bad conditioning. This is something I’m always working on. Not only do people and yourself get in the way of writing, but so does life. Marriages. Children. Divorce. College. Work. Mundane chores. Traumatic life events. These can really put a damper on one’s ability to sit in a chair and write out your characters’ problems when you have your own.

In 1998, I sat down one evening and wrote the first chapter to Secondhand Shoes. My thoughts were I would be able to finish it within a year, but I found myself suddenly a single mother of five. So I tucked it in a folder and stuck it in my closet. For years, I made notes and wrote dialogue for it and tucked it away. Several years later, and down to two children in the household, I plunked myself back into a chair and wrote. I wrote it four times over. The first version, I hated and couldn’t relate to it at all. It was like reading a Monday night movie on Lifetime for Women. The second version, the protagonist was a real whiner. When I finally finished the third version, I could finally see the forest through the trees, and the fourth version of Secondhand Shoes was born. Somewhere between the first and second version, in 2008, I became a member of the Florida Writer’s Association. Every second and fourth Monday evening, we meet at the Barnes and Nobles in Carrollwood. There, we edit and critique each other. The girls and one guy in the group are my checks and balances as I am theirs. Once I got the okay from my

group members that it was ready, it was onto the next stage in the writing experience. Finding an editor. Well, I had the gem of all editors. Kaye Coppersmith. She was a longtime member of Florida Writer’s Association and halfway through my manuscript when she passed. That was this past April. At the time, I felt like God and the Universe had stolen her from me. And the negative voices ate at me again. But I rose above it, wiped my tears, and went forward. It wasn’t easy finding an editor who could keep my writing voice. So many editors out there try to change everything so much so they lose the characteristics of your characters and their voice. I also found a lot of people labeling themselves as editors, only to find out they didn’t know much about the profession. And how did you publish? I ended up going Indie (self-published). Yes. I did try the traditional route but after sending the requested manuscript to agents and publishers, most times I didn’t even get a rejection. Not getting a response bothered me more than not receiving one. It would have been nice to at least hear they didn’t think my novel was mar-

ketable. To this day, I haven’t heard back from one agent who requested my manuscript ‘as is’ in 2010. Getting published isn’t as easy as one thinks. No one writes a novel and becomes instantly published. Let me tell you, self-publishing isn’t easy, either. Since I’m not a computer geek by any means, I thought many times I would throw my computer into the street over formatting. My eyes thought they were going to fail me over the many times I proofread. Right now, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the marketing part. Indies are a one man or woman show wearing many hats while maintaining their day jobs. Also, being self-published takes the cost of making a book out of your pocket. Nothing is free. One has to hire a cover artist, an editor, and someone who can format for an ebook. It all takes time and a lot of dedication. Right now, my novel, Secondhand Shoes, is on Amazon, in paperback only for now. It should be available for Kindle by the end of the month and available through other venues within a couple of months.

The Lucky Dill Hosts “The Biggest St. Patty’s Day Bash in the Bay” By Julie Kanehl The Lucky Dill is known for doing it big, from the size of their sandwiches to their bakery’s dessert menu, and this year they are having what could be the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration that Palm Harbor has ever seen. Located on US Hwy 19 between Tampa Rd. and Nebraska Rd. the Lucky Dill’s weeklong St. Patty’s Day celebration will kick off on March 10th and continue all week long, ending with their biggest bash yet on Saturday and Sunday. This means that Lucky Dill customers will be able to take part in a party so big it had to have been born in the Big Apple. Lucky for us, we won’t have to go to NYC, or Ireland for that matter, to get the real deal, authentic taste that so many of us look forward to. Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes - Making Life a Little Sweeter By Dara Tucker Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened the original store in Trinity, off Old CR 54 in February of 2010. Jessica worked for The Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Florida for over 13 years. Jess was versatile in many of the daily resort operations, but primarily focused on food and beverage, which is her passion. As a mom who lives locally in the Trinity area, she initially wanted to open an affordable neighborhood ice cream shop that caters to the budget of the average family. She never thought the demand of her sweet treats would have her baking full time and leaving the job she was loyal to at Innisbrook. Cupcakes were originally intended to be a side item, or an alternative to ice cream, and were first baked in her toaster oven! When Jess sold over 300 cupcakes the first week of her business, she knew she would need a larger oven to keep up with the demand. Word of mouth

and a Facebook page spread the news, as well as the popularity of such TV shows as DC cupcakes on TLC and Cupcake Wars on Food Network. Paying It Forward By Diane Galemmo State Rep. Mike Fasano donated about $40,000 of his leftover campaign funds. The top beneficiary was Volunteer Way, which runs a food bank. Fasano gave the group $10,000 to put toward a refrigerator truck and/or other operating expenses. Another cause close to his heart, AMIKids, got $5,000. The agency, formerly known as the Marine Institute, provides educational programs for at-risk children. It took a huge hit earlier this year when it lost a state contract and has had to put together a budget with assistance from the Pasco school district and the county government. held their annual canned food drive to support the Healthy Families PascoHernando program. The students are elected by their classes and represent each grade, kindergarten through fifth grades. The students join the Student Council because they enjoy helping their school and their community. Students learn to help those who are less fortunate. By collecting and delivering these items, students get a better understanding of the importance of giving, instead of taking. They are proud of their service to the people they are helping. The Starkey Family Makes Sweet $54 Million Dollar Deal By Diane Galemmo The Starkey family has sold its 2,500-acre ranch to Connecticutbased private equity firm Wheelock Street Capital for $54 million. The project will be managed by Reed Berlinsky of Florida-based Gentry Land Company. Back in 2008, the Pasco County Board of Commissioners had approved an innovative expansion project, which the Starkey family was planning to develop with a vision toward the future. Trey and Frank Starkey had hoped construction would begin in 2010. The Starkey Brothers’ plan was to turn the remainder of their grandfather J.B. Starkey, Sr.’s original 16,000acre cattle ranch, purchased in 1937, into a distinct town-and-country community. Trey says, “It (would be) a return to the way development was done before World War II when the pedestrian was king, or at least the auto was of less concern. Parks, plazas, piazzas [and more] were the norm, sur-

rounded by dense urban development, sidewalks, tree lined avenues, mom and pop stores.” Their proposal had included 1,415 multi-family residential units (condos, apartments and townhouses), 2,870 single-family dwelling units and a 100-room hotel. Plans also called for 5,050 housing units, about 750,000 square feet of retail, office and light industrial space and 220 hotel rooms. At that time, the family had also proposed

a 30,000-sq.-ft. day care center, a 120bed Adult Care Living Facility (ACLF), and a 16-screen multiplex theatre. Currently, however, the day care center, the ACLF and the multiplex theatre are not mentioned as being part of Wheelock’s project. With the sale to Wheelock, Starkey Ranch will still preserve over three-fourths of the original ranch, and now, says Trey, “The rest can be redeveloped in a responsible manner.”

The project is currently approved for 5,050 homes, 450,000 square feet of retail, office, and medical space, 300,000 square feet for light industrial use and 220 hotel rooms. Trey Starkey says, “I know they’ll be able to pull it off…Wheelock has the horsepower to do this. It’s a bittersweet deal.” He adds, “It’s a wonderful piece of land, but we’ve been able to share it with a number of people. Now the rest can be developed in a responsible manner.” The hotel entitlements made the project especially appealing to Wheelock, since the company has a division that specializes in hotel development. Berlinsky believes Florida’s housing market and especially the Tampa Bay area is ready for a rebound after five years of recession. “Wheelock is an opportunistic company that looks at key markets in real estate,” says Berlinsky. “Tampa is one of the key markets we looked at, and we considered future corridors with potential for growth. Starkey Ranch is a piece of property that meets all these criteria. As we

learned more about it, we felt like it had more viability every day.” Berlinsky says Wheelock would spend at least six months planning, envisioning and modeling the community. He continues, “This is our time to really decide what the community is going to look like and what we’re going to call it. It’ll probably be a year before we make any announcements regarding builders.” The first phase of construction will likely take place toward the center of the property, around a future elementary/middle school and park site.

News Briefs by Diane Galemmo Seven Springs Middle School Rewarded for its Community Service For more than a decade, servicelearning classes (SLC) at Seven Springs Middle School have been helping the community with its projects. Recently students in this year’s service learning program welcomed Steven Kemler, CEO of Ultimate Medical Academy (where students learn professions related to Healthcare). Kemler came to the school to present the program with a $1,500 donation from his school to theirs. With the money, the SLC program will be able to continue teaching young people the value of having a positive impact on their community. Kemler expressed his appreciation for the work the students do. “I’m a strong believer in community service,” he said. “I’m just super excited to see students getting involved at a younger age.” Seven Springs Middle School has had its service learning class for 11 years. “We are the longest continu-

ous service learning class in this part of America,” says teacher Dorothy Taylor. The class had been created from Florida Learn and Serve, which in turn was part of Learn and Serve America, a federal program designed to give young people the chance to get involved with their community by integrating service projects with classroom learning. Students identify projects in their school or community, then research, organize and actively participate in those projects. Part of the process is writing a grant for each project from the class’ annual budget. But near the end of the 2010-11 school year, the federal Learn-and-Serve program was discontinued due to budget cuts, and the Seven Springs program found itself unfunded and having to figure out how to keep afloat. Last year, an article in The Suncoast News about the situation prompted the SWM Group, a Merrill Lynch financial advisory team, and the Bank of America to pledge

matching funds of up to $1,500 each for any money the students could raise. The two companies renewed their matching fund pledge again this year. In addition, Seven Springs Middle School Principal Phil Kupczyk was able to find some room in the school’s budget to help support the program. Kemler, who is acquainted with Taylor and her husband, got intrigued when he saw the link to the SLC page on the middle school website. Ultimate Medical Academy offers several health care training and degree programs at its Clearwater and Tampa campuses, as well as online. As Kemler looked at the long list of recent and current projects, he noticed that not one was medically related. “He emailed me and said if we could come up with a medical service project, he could support it,” Taylor said. shoulders, Taylor let them decide what to do. The kids voted, deciding on All Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. For All Children’s Hospital, they will have a toy drive and personally distribute the gifts at the pediatric medical center in St. Petersburg. They also plan on having a tent at the next Relay for Life, selling goods of some kind. “What you guys are doing is great,” Kemler says. “It’s the right thing to do. Helping other people adds to your own life.” Young Trinity Actor Heads for Broadway Last summer 11year-old Joshua Colley from Longleaf in Trinity landed a dream role as Gavrouche in Les Miserables. Thousands of applicants across the nation applied, and it was Joshua who was chosen. It was a key role in the 25th anniversary U.S. tour of the renowned musical; Gavrouche sang seven songs, both solo and with the cast.

And now Joshua is heading to Broadway. There, he will play the character of Les in the Disney musical Newsies at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway in New York City. He is scheduled to start rehearsals with the cast on Feb. 18. Newsies is set in New York City at the turn of the century. Newsies is the rousing tale of a charismatic newsboy and the leader of a ragged band of “newsies.” In the United States ‘newsboys’ or ‘newsies,’ were the main distributors of newspapers to the general public from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Although Joshua will be missing school for several more months, the tour has professional ontour educators. Newsies won two Tony awards in 2012 for best original score and best choreography. “We’re just ‘over the moon’ excited,” says his father, Brad, speaking from Les Miserables‘ last national tour stop in Kalamazoo, MI. It’s obvious that talent runs in the family. Joshua’s parents, Robbie Lynn and Brad, along with his twin brother Cameron, who sings, does ventriloquism and comedy, started the Playin’ Around Theatre company

in 1999. They own, operate and star in children’s productions, which go on the road to various school, libraries, theaters and other venues. Their quality of educational and entertaining adaptations of classic fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast and Jack in the Beanstalk have been very popular and have earned them many accolades. Say his parents, “We can’t explain how proud of him [Joshua] we are. He is a consummate professional. The sense of professionalism he displays on the stage surpasses his years for sure.” County Commissioners Approve Land Deal to Bring Park to Trinity In February 2011 our publication reported that Trinity residents were still waiting for a park that the county promised them back in March 2003. One of the glitches has been that Pasco County can afford to build parks but cannot afford to operate and maintain them. Now, ten years later, residents are merely one step closer to getting that long-awaited park. In November 2012, county commissioners unani-

mously approved an agreement that would return 24 acres south of Trinity Boulevard to Adam Smith Enterprises (ASE), the developer that built much of Trinity. The details are still being worked on, but the idea is for ASE, who originally donated the land to the county for a park, to build the park itself. The agreement would require that the Trinity Master Association use the land only for recreation and drainage. The developer would have to give up any right to park impact fee credits it received for the site. Any impact fees paid in the Trinity development would be able to be used to buy land or build a district park in another location, but still in the same impact fee zone. And the county would hold aside four or five acres for a future library. The conveyance of the property to the Master Association will eliminate the uncertainty that the county could surplus the property in the future and sell it for a different use. Another glitch is the developer mentioned the possibility of a private park open only to Trinity residents. If that were the case, county officials

could not justify the roughly $600,000 in fee waivers it gave the company for the initial land donation. After considering the offer, county commissioners told County Administrator John Gallagher to work out a deal, as long as the park is open to the public. No construction costs are yet available, but assistant county administrator Dan Johnson said the price tag would probably be in line with that of Lake Lisa Park near Embassy Hills in Port Richey. That project cost about $434,000. ASE offered $60,000 to help maintain the park, but Lew Friedland, president of Adam Smith Enterprises, told commissioners that maintenance costs for the proposed Trinity Park would be about $35,000 a year. That means the company’s contribution would help pay for only about two years. Developers envision a park with walking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, a picnic shelter and a dog park. The site is adjacent to the county fire station #16 on Trinity Boulevard near S.R. 54.
