It’s a G’day to Bring Your Mates to the Outback Steakhouse in Trinity By Julie Kanehl The Outback Steakhouse in Trinity, Florida has been a popular restaurant for local residents since it opened in 2006, and in that time has made itself the ultimate destination for their delicious “Choose Your Cooking Style” steaks, their irresistible Bloomin’ Onion® and their decadent desserts. That’s not to say that they’re

resting on their Aussie laurels, because in the last couple of years our local Outback has been beautifully remodeled and has recently added lunch hours to accommodate the many busy individuals and families that it serves. Right now, Outback is keeping it fresh by offering a new Perfect Pairs menu and on Valentine’s Day weekend, they’ll be offering a special “Valentine’s Meal for Two” that includes an

appetizer, two entrees and a dessert, proving once again that Outback time is always a great time. The Outback Steakhouse in Trinity is conveniently located at the corner of S.R. 54 and Duck Slough Blvd. and is just minutes away from East Lake, New Port Richey, Odessa, Lutz and even Land O’ Lakes. Remember those days when you had energy to burn; when you could bounce back from just about anything and still feel great? In my 20s, I could go out dancing and wake up five pounds lighter the next day! But when

you hit your 40s, it’s not so easy to drop the weight and everything seems to start slowing down – your metabolism, your energy level and your libido can take a dive. For most people, it’s at age 40 and beyond that they are finally reaping the benefits of hard work and have the means to travel and enjoy

Founder and CEO of National Rejuvenation Centers, Bartley H. Kerr, D.C., says you can! He knows firsthand because at age 45, he does have energy to burn and uses much of it enjoying time with his wife and playing with their young daughters. And, he has seen the difference in his patients who report back that they feel fantastic! Dr. Kerr says, “I have patients in their 60s who say ‘I could take my 20-year-old self’ because they feel better now than they have ever felt in their life.”

Adopted Pets Bring a Little More Love to Your Life Thanks to the many volunteers who work in local shelters and who provide fostering in their homes for puppies and kittens, people like me (and maybe you too!) can find beautiful, well-adapted and loving pets to bring home and cherish. If you think that you have room in your home and in your heart to welcome a new family member that will bring a lot of love into your life, then visit the local shelters and/or start doing a little online research. Petfinder.com and Adoptapet.com are two good sites that offer an abundance of information about pet shelters, rescue groups, pet adoption facilities and much more, such as a checklist of questions to help you decide if adoption is right for you and what type of pet will best fit your lifestyle. The Humane Society and SPCA have plenty of healthy, happy pets to bring home and both facilities welcome visitors. Last year, I visited the SPCA Suncoast in Port Richey

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

(spcasuncoast.org) and came home with a silky black kitten with green eyes that the whole family has come to adore. The boys dubbed him Honey Badger and somehow the unlikely name fits him perfectly. Nothing bothers him and he fits right in! Our German Shepherd became the best nanny a kitten could want. The great thing about adopting a pet, besides getting a loyal and loving companion, is that for a minimum adoption fee, your new pet is neutered or spayed, is provided all of their shots, and at SPCA Suncoast they are even micro-chipped. When my daughter Katie decided she was ready to adopt a puppy, she searched rescue agencies online and researched the various breeds to find a companion pup that would fit right into her life. She wanted a boy and she wanted to name him Tank. Wouldn’t you know? She found a gorgeous little boy, already named Tank, and decided it was meant to be. Tank was fostered by volunteers with FARR (Florida Re-

triever Rescue), who took him and his siblings in when they were only four weeks old and gave them excellent care and a lot of love. FARR put Katie in touch with a local Tank veterinarian who works with the organization to provide vaccinations and spaying/neutering. At 12 weeks, Tank is brilliant! He sits, shakes, lies down, rolls over, and plays dead dog already. Every time Katie walks him people ask what kind of dog he is and she’ll just say, “A happy one!” Pets are a big responsibility. Before you decide to adopt, make sure that you can make the commitment to keep your pet healthy with regular visits to the veterinarian, that you have the time for them and that your home will accommodate their needs.

Medical Center of Trinity Announces New Single-Incision Minimally Invasive Option for Gallbladder Surgery The technology of robotics combined with a single-site incision provides patients with a more comfortable, virtually painless gallbladder procedure. Medical Center of Trinity is proud to announce that it now offers Single-Site Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), using the da Vinci Surgical System. General surgeon Keith Chisholm, MD has performed the first procedure done in Pasco and North Pinellas Counties. Traditionally called a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the now minimally invasive robotic procedure combines the technology of the da Vinci System with a single incision through the patient’s belly button. “Unlike traditional robotic surgeries requiring three to five small incisions, this new technology allows for a single incision in the belly button where instruments are placed and

the diseased gallbladder is removed”, said Keith Chisholm, MD, General Surgeon, who uses the da Vinci surgical system for other surgical procedures. “This single-site incision is approximately one inch long and allows patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery; typically less bleeding, less pain and a quicker return to activities, with almost no visible scar”. Most people who require gallbladder removal are candidates for the robotic, single-incision surgery. According to the American College of Surgeons, surgery is the recommended treatment for gallbladder pain from gallstones and non-functioning gallbladders. During the surgery, doctors view a magnified, three-dimensional image of the surgical site while sitting at a console next to the patient. The doctor then controls four robotic arms, which extend and enhance his ability to maneuver in smaller spaces. “The magnification and three-di-

mensional optics of this surgical system along with added dexterity using the special instruments help the physician perform the operation in a safe, efficient manner. Patients are pleased with both the ease of their physical recovery and the fact that they aren’t left with large scars”, said Dr. Chisholm. Prior to the da Vinci single-site cholecystectomy, gallbladder surgery required several incisions underneath the ribcage, at the belly button, which left patients to face longer recoveries and more scars. Incubator for Business Start-Ups Becoming a Reality in Pasco County The Dade City Commissioners showed support for entrepreneurs by approving $50,000 to launch Pasco County’s first business incubator. The incubator will be located in the Dade City Business Center and managed by a team led by the Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. “With the actions last night of the City Commission and approval of the incubator plan by the Pasco EDC Board this morning, the Dade City Incubator project takes a huge step towards reality,” said Jimmy Adcock,

Regional Manager for Tampa Electric People’s Gas. Adcock is one of several Pasco EDC board members who have been working over the past year to develop the project. Saint Leo University has offered to partner with Pasco EDC and the new business incubator to provide technical assistance to start-ups. Dr. Michael Nastanski, Dean of the Donald R. Tapia School of Business at Saint Leo University, said, “The incubator completes a long-term objective for the School of Business to deepen our support to the local business community and provide opportunities for our students and faculty to engage in creating new businesses.” The Dade City Business Center is a turnkey location that Pasco EDC will be able to use to help start-up companies or early stage businesses grow, add jobs, and obtain technical assistance. The goal is to support the entrepreneurial community in Dade City and Pasco County and help these start-ups become successful local businesses. John Moors, Executive Director of the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, is excited about the opportunity, commenting that the incubator project “represents a fantastic

opportunity for Dade City in job creation, promotion of our community as “open for business”, and supporting entrepreneurship.” Moors added, “We look forward to working with our partners in promoting this new growth while maintaining our unique, old Florida sense of community.” Pasco EDC is a non-profit organization that promotes economic development in Pasco County, Florida. Instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, they regard your body as an integrated whole. Osteopathic Physicians focus on preventive healthcare. D.O.'s receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system – your body's interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones that make up two-thirds of its body mass. This training provides osteopathic physicians with a better understanding of the ways that an injury or illness in one part of your body can affect another. It gives D.O.'s a therapeutic and diagnostic advantage over those who do not receive additional specialized training. Through treatment techniques such as massage, soft tissue techniques, Osteopathic Manipulations, and Physical Therapy, the doctor and staff help manage your pain. Medical Weight Loss & Spa Services: Dr. Greenfield has helped many patients in the area with a wide array of health concerns including weight loss. He says that his weight loss program patients have achieved tremendous results and many have lost 90-100 pounds, with an average loss of five pounds every two weeks. Each patient in the program has an EKG and blood work prior to starting the physician-managed program, which includes medications and a healthy diet and exercise plan. Spa services including chemical peels, facials and waxing are available by appointment.

Holistic Healing: Family Medical Centers has recently welcomed two new team members, Massage Therapist Pam Plante (MA39672) and Physical Therapist Tom Saxon. Pam received her massage therapy license in 2003 from the School of Humanities in Pinellas Park. She specializes in Swedish “relaxation” massage, deep tissue, cranial sacral “alignment of vertebrae,” stretching techniques and muscle strengthening. Pam says, “The real accomplishment from my work comes from hearing a patient say that I have really helped them feel better. I find satisfaction in growing and learning with each patient.” Tom has been practicing Physical Therapy for over 15 years. Tom’s experience is exponential and he has helped many patients through rehab, physical therapy and fitness treatments. Saxon Rehab Management is located inside Family Medical Centers and is continuously growing. Coming in April, Tom will be starting an outpatient rehab clinic that focuses on helping patients get the prime services to heal their bodies. Saxon Physical Therapy will be utilizing therapy and fitness techniques for a whole body healing and will be affiliated with Silver Sneakers.

Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing Owned & Operated by a Master Plumber and Craftsmen By Katie Thomas The kitchen is sometimes referred to as the heart of the home. A warm, comfortable place to gather with friends and family, our kitchens are the centers of our homes, many times quite literally in the center! With an open floor plan, your kitchen is visible from every vantage point, so it makes sense that it should be both functional and beautiful. A remodeled kitchen is not only aesthetically pleasing; it also makes your home feel complete and inviting. If you are looking to add to the comfort of your own home, enhance your house before you put it on the market to sell, or you’re in need of plumbing or cabinetry repairs, Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing, Inc. is ready to help you with your every plumbing and cabinetry need. Owner and operator, Master Plumber and fine craftsman Zoltan Kovacs’ services range from bathroom and kitchen remodeling to complete

plumbing repairs performed with accuracy, integrity and masterful skills. Zoltan explains that in order to become a Master Plumber you must have a minimum of eight years’ experience in the field, with four of them in a supervisory position before you can apply to take the test. Then, over two days, you must pass a 19-hour test. One day of testing is on business and accounting, and the other day is on the plumbing trade. In addition to being a Master Plumber, Zoltan is a licensed cabinet contractor, and can completely remodel kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you need tile work, plumbing, cabinetry craftsmanship or a complete remodeling – Zoltan Kovacs has the expertise to get the job done the right way. Born and raised in Hungary, where he attended trade school for three years to become a plumber, he moved to New York in 1986 and worked in plumbing until 1992, when he moved to Florida where Zoltan

worked for local construction and plumbing companies before he opened his own family owned and operated company in 1999. Although Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodeling, he also is very adept at repairing leaks in water lines, and leaks both above and below ground can quickly be detected and repaired. The company also repairs and replaces gas and electric hot water heaters, as well as installing, repairing and replacing garbage disposals, air conditioning condensation lines and more. Most times Zoltan can quickly assess what your plumbing problem may be. He is uses efficient and up to date plumbing

equipment to diagnose problems. Sometimes, it is maintaining something simple that will prevent major problems. The number one cause of floods in residential homes is due to the wear and tear on washing machine hoses; reverse osmosis filter systems with colored plastic tubes are not as durable as stainless steel braided hoses and become brittle over time. Simple things that are cheap to repair or replace can save you hundreds of dollars, or even thousands, if a flood were to occur. Zoltan Kovacs Plumbing offers free estimates, which allows the company to assess the problem and complete any repairs in a timely fashion. Zoltan says, “Each job is unique

An Interview With Author Shelly Arkon When she was nine, Shelly Arkon's mother advised her not to write a novel because no one would publish it…but she wrote it anyway. Shelly Arkon has never stopped writing since she wrote that first novel as a child. In spite of more family drama than most of us could handle— as the mother of five daughters, drama is unavoidable––she's been writing most of her life. She says most of these stories, written in longhand in spiral notebooks, have been about vampires. She now lives in New Port Richey with her husband and two dogs. She’s also a member of Florida Writer’s Association and Writer’s of Mass Distraction. Currently, she’s working on a book series. It’s about two grandmothers, one a New Age hippie, and the other, a Southern Baptist, their grandbaby, their grown children who are pill heads, their extended dysfunctional family, and a dangerous drug dealer. The two grandmothers find themselves in a dangerous pursuit to save their grandbaby while finding an

26

unlikely friendship between them. Interview Why do you write? There is a constant chatter going on in my head all day. Ideas and dialogue come quickly where I have to write them down. If I don’t, I may miss an opportunity to get it down the way I heard it the first time. Even characters get perturbed when you don’t relay their information correctly. They want their stories told in the right way. Not to mention, all of my characters bug me until I do-I have a tendency to work on multiple projects at a time. Can you explain the trials and tribulations of writing your first novel or writing in general? There’s a ga-zillion of those. My first set of trials and tribulations began in the first grade when teachers stuck me in a slow class because I couldn’t grasp reading and writing like the other kids in my class did. One afternoon, one of teachers handed me a stool, an eraser, and a piece of chalk. I was to write, say each

letter, and my name over and over. First grade through the third were the most tedious years of my life. But I’m thankful to all my Shelly Arkon teachers for their patience and persistence. By the fourth grade, I was further ahead than most my classmates in reading and writing along with my big love for both. Once I took off in reading and writing, I read everything I could get my hands on. And I had an affinity for diaries, spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, and daydreaming. My imagination ran wild with stories and poems. I wrote non-stop as a child and teen. Unfortunately, there were people and even myself who discouraged me from writing. Many times I heard ‘no one would publish you’ or ‘there’s nothing special about what you write’ or ‘so-n-so writes way better stuff than

FEBRUARY 2013

you do.’ Negative self-voices are the worst. So you have to find your positive self-voice to talk you out of the bad conditioning. This is something I’m always working on. Not only do people and yourself get in the way of writing, but so does life. Marriages. Children. Divorce. College. Work. Mundane chores. Traumatic life events. These can really put a damper on one’s ability to sit in a chair and write out your characters’ problems when you have your own.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

In 1998, I sat down one evening and wrote the first chapter to Secondhand Shoes. My thoughts were I would be able to finish it within a year, but I found myself suddenly a single mother of five. So I tucked it in a folder and stuck it in my closet. For years, I made notes and wrote dialogue for it and tucked it away. Several years later, and down to two children in the household, I plunked myself back into a chair and wrote. I wrote it four times over. The first version, I hated and couldn’t relate to it at all. It was like reading a Monday night movie on Lifetime for Women. The second version, the protagonist was a real whiner. When I finally finished the third version, I could finally see the forest through the trees, and the fourth version of Secondhand Shoes was born. Somewhere between the first and second version, in 2008, I became a member of the Florida Writer’s Association. Every second and fourth Monday evening, we meet at the Barnes and Nobles in Carrollwood. There, we edit and critique each other. The girls and one guy in the group are my checks and balances as I am theirs. Once I got the okay from my

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

group members that it was ready, it was onto the next stage in the writing experience. Finding an editor. Well, I had the gem of all editors. Kaye Coppersmith. She was a longtime member of Florida Writer’s Association and halfway through my manuscript when she passed. That was this past April. At the time, I felt like God and the Universe had stolen her from me. And the negative voices ate at me again. But I rose above it, wiped my tears, and went forward. It wasn’t easy finding an editor who could keep my writing voice. So many editors out there try to change everything so much so they lose the characteristics of your characters and their voice. I also found a lot of people labeling themselves as editors, only to find out they didn’t know much about the profession. And how did you publish? I ended up going Indie (self-published). Yes. I did try the traditional route but after sending the requested manuscript to agents and publishers, most times I didn’t even get a rejection. Not getting a response bothered me more than not receiving one. It would have been nice to at least hear they didn’t think my novel was mar-

ketable. To this day, I haven’t heard back from one agent who requested my manuscript ‘as is’ in 2010. Getting published isn’t as easy as one thinks. No one writes a novel and becomes instantly published. Let me tell you, self-publishing isn’t easy, either. Since I’m not a computer geek by any means, I thought many times I would throw my computer into the street over formatting. My eyes thought they were going to fail me over the many times I proofread. Right now, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with the marketing part. Indies are a one man or woman show wearing many hats while maintaining their day jobs. Also, being self-published takes the cost of making a book out of your pocket. Nothing is free. One has to hire a cover artist, an editor, and someone who can format for an ebook. It all takes time and a lot of dedication. Right now, my novel, Secondhand Shoes, is on Amazon, in paperback only for now. It should be available for Kindle by the end of the month and available through other venues within a couple of months.

A Sneak Look at Secondhand Shoes The shoes didn’t fit. It was an omen. Eighteen-year-old psychicmedium-germ-a-phobe Lila should have listened to her ghostly Gram’s advice the morning of her wedding, “Take off that dress and those shoes. And run.” En route to the honeymoon, she decides to listen after too many disagreements with her groom. It doesn’t pay to go along to make everyone happy. Still in her wedding dress and shoes, she escapes out a diner’s bathroom window into the Florida woods despite her fear of snakes and germs with her dead Gram’s direction. So she begins a journey of finding her inner strength, putting her on a deadly run from her psychotic groom and his deranged friends. Will she ever get past her fear of germs and snakes? Will she survive her honeymoon? If anyone would like an autographed copy of Secondhand Shoes, they can find Shelly Arkon at: shellysnovicewritings.blogspot.com and secondhandshoesnovel.blogspot.com.

The Lucky Dill Hosts “The Biggest St. Patty’s Day Bash in the Bay” By Julie Kanehl The Lucky Dill is known for doing it big, from the size of their sandwiches to their bakery’s dessert menu, and this year they are having what could be the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration that Palm Harbor has ever seen. Located on US Hwy 19 between Tampa Rd. and Nebraska Rd. the Lucky Dill’s weeklong St. Patty’s Day celebration will kick off on March 10th and continue all week long, ending with their biggest bash yet on Saturday and Sunday. This means that Lucky Dill customers will be able to take part in a party so big it had to have been born in the Big Apple. Lucky for us, we won’t have to go to NYC, or Ireland for that matter, to get the real deal, authentic taste that so many of us look forward to. If you get excited about green lager, bagpipes, leprechauns, pretty girls step dancing and 20 thousand pounds of perfectly cooked corned beef and cabbage, then you will want to come to their big St. Patty’s Day bash!

30

The Lucky Dill has the entire family in mind for their weeklong celebration, and they will have something for everyone (it will most likely be delicious and green, but there’s definitely something for everyone). Perhaps you had the opportunity to come to The Lucky Dill’s St. Patty’s Day party last year, I mean, everyone was there! Even Kirstie Alley made an appearance! This year, they are promising to make their celebration even bigger, complete with the chance to really get lucky by winning prizes such as gift certificates, bar tabs and even an iPad! The Irish Feast! No holiday is complete without great food, and without even a hint of fanfare, The Lucky Dill would have everyone else beat with its menu alone. In addition to the regular menu (can we call this menu regular? Read: Stupendous), they will be preparing 20,000 pounds of corned beef and cabbage to prepare for their Irish feast, and then top it all off by offering their guests free slices of

their specialty Irish Cream Cheesecake for dessert. The Lucky Dill’s St. Patty’s Day Menu starts with their Hot Corned Beef Sandwich piled high on Rye, I mean after all, it is the sandwich that put them on the map! If you like your Corned Beef Sandwich with “Kraut & Swiss,” served on grilled Rye and served with Russian dressing, then you’re going to want to order The Reuben. Don’t be surprised, however, if you get caught up in the spirit and want something even more traditional to Ireland! The Lucky Dill will also be serving Guinness Black Peppercorn Beef Stew, which is a hearty portion of tender beef that has been braised in Guinness Ale along with onions, baby carrots and potatoes until perfection.

Another popular Irish offering is Shepherds Pie. What is Shepherd’s Pie? It’s lean ground beef baked with carrots, celery, petite green peas and gravy, and then topped with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese. Sign me up! Even the kids will be a part of the fun at the Lucky Dill, for the kids will have a green menu of their own to choose from, and if they’re lucky,

they may get something for dessert as well! The Irish Drink! Yes, there will be amazing food, incredibly talented entertainment, free cheesecake, face painting and giveaways, but what’s St. Patty’s Day without a good Irish drink? The St. Patty’s Day menu offers some amazing drinks that could only come from The Lucky Dill’s Famous NYC Bar. There will definitely be tons of green beer, drafts like Guinness, Harp, Smithwick’s and more, and an entire selection of bottled beer to choose from. But you might be interested in a few of their specials, one of which is The “Irish Breakfast” (good at any time of the day) and it mixes Bushmills, Butterscotch Schnapps and orange juice. The “Irish Gold” is a drink made of Jameson, Peach Schnapps, Ginger Ale and orange juice, yum! The “Irish Gimlet” is another popular drink, and it is made with Jameson Irish Whisky, Blue Curacao and a touch of lime. These are just a few of the specialty drinks offered on the menu this St. Patrick’s Day. Did I say beer truck? Yes! On Saturday and Sunday, the bash will

Finding a trustworthy company to do the work can feel overwhelming, but with Yeager & Company Flooring, it doesn’t have to be. In addition to flooring, the company is a state licensed general contractor and has both a licensed electrician and a plumber working with the company. They can take care of almost every need you have for remodeling your house, including painting. In all my years as a homeowner I have never been more pleased with a company’s service and end product in my house as I have been with the work completed by Yeager Flooring. Nearly 70 years ago Pearson Yeager, Sr. opened the first Yeager & Company on March 13th, 1944 in Philadelphia, beginning a family business and a tradition of integrity that has been passed on through three generations. James “Jim” Yeager runs the

company with the same basic belief that was instilled upon him from his grandfather. Jim says that integrity is more than being fair, more than being honest. He believes integrity is a commitment to do the right thing that comes from within. It’s like the golden rule: treat others as you would have others treat you. Likewise, work for others as you would work for yourself. He adds, “Integrity demands that we protect your home and personal property as it were our own…that a job has to be done to our satisfaction before we deem it complete. That if something is amiss with a project, we’ll fix it without having to be asked.” Jim explains, “Prior to going to work for us every employee is background checked, and rechecked yearly. As a participant of Asktheseal.com our customers are e-mailed a picture of who’s coming to your house, so you know who to expect. We have a staff of professionals, who know the business, and are experienced in their field.” In addition to Asktheseal.com, Yeager & Company has an A+ rating

from the Better Business Bureau, and has been awarded the Angie’s List Superior Service Award in 8 categories for the sixth straight year. As a state licensed general contractor, Yeager & Company installs flooring such as hardwood, laminates and tile. They install cabinets, and use an in-state manufacturer, which help keep costs down. Other services include painting, installing windows, doors, crown molding, baseboards, chair rails, pavers, popcorn ceiling removal, and knockdown application. With a licensed electrician, plumber, and interior designer working with the company, Yeager & Company can take care of most everything inside of your house. Jim and his employees know how to work within your budget to help you get the look you want to achieve. For ex-

ample a recent customer wanted a new glass door, and Jim was able to add glass to her existing door so she could enjoy the same look, but within her set price. When we knew we wanted to have tile removed and hardwood and carpet laid down we shopped several stores who we thought would have the most competitive prices. We even received a quote for tile removal from a family friend who does it for side work. Yeager not only beat or

Yeager & Company has all types of quality flooring at its showroom matched everyone’s prices (including our family friend), but they also had a much better selection. We were also able take advantage of their 12-month no interest plan available to qualified buyers through a third party lender. We picked out three different woods and laminates at the Odessa showroom and distribution center. Then our salesman brought samples to our house so we could see how they would look with our lighting. Once we saw it in the house we knew we wanted the more expensive hardwood, so our salesman worked on how we could lower the carpet cost so we could get the hardwood we wanted and stay

within our price range. The tile removal went much smoother than I could have imagined with very little dust or particles left behind because they thoroughly taped and sealed all the areas in advance. Our floors were expertly laid down. The quality of our hardwood and how it is adhered to the floor makes nearly everyone who comes into our house for the first time, ask who did our floors. In the first six months that we had our carpet, we noticed it was wearing unusually quickly. I called Yeager & Company and was surprised that a sales person came the same day to look at it, take pictures of it, and

sent them to the manufacturer. We were reimbursed for the cost of the carpet and applied it to new flooring. I was completely impressed with how Yeager & Company stood behind their product. Jackie Kovilaritch says, “My experience with Yeager & Company in general, and specifically Jim Yeager himself, was incredible. Jim Yeager is a rare find these days in so many ways. He is a man of his word and his integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail is second to none. Jim was on top of every issue involved in my renovation project and went above-

and-beyond the call to help me address some unexpected issues with the home uncovered during the project. He was certainly not obligated to help me with this and did what he did, not because he was obligated to do so, but because he is a good man. I cannot recommend this company highly enough and would happily use them again. Don’t waste your time looking for anyone else. You can’t go wrong with Yeager.” Whether you’re looking for a full remodel or just need flooring, Yeager & Company has you covered. Jim says it best, “I know we won’t get every job we quote. Every job we do get though, I know we’ll have a customer for life.” To arrange a shop at home appointment call Yeager & Company, Inc. at 1-888-591-9262. You can visit the distribution center and showroom at 2310 Success Drive, Odessa, Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM and Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM. The Spring Hill showroom is located at 4200 Commercial Way, Spring Hill, and is open Monday – Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM. Visit YeagerFlooring.com for additional information.

Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes - Making Life a Little Sweeter By Dara Tucker Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened the original store in Trinity, off Old CR 54 in February of 2010. Jessica worked for The Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Florida for over 13 years. Jess was versatile in many of the daily resort operations, but primarily focused on food and beverage, which is her passion. As a mom who lives locally in the Trinity area, she initially wanted to open an affordable neighborhood ice cream shop that caters to the budget of the average family. She never thought the demand of her sweet treats would have her baking full time and leaving the job she was loyal to at Innisbrook. Cupcakes were originally intended to be a side item, or an alternative to ice cream, and were first baked in her toaster oven! When Jess sold over 300 cupcakes the first week of her business, she knew she would need a larger oven to keep up with the demand. Word of mouth

and a Facebook page spread the news, as well as the popularity of such TV shows as DC cupcakes on TLC and Cupcake Wars on Food Network. Little could Jess have imagined that three years later word of her delicious cupcakes would lead to a total of three stores, serving Eastlake/Palm Harbor, Trinity/New Port Richey, and Lutz/Land O’Lakes areas. Sugardarlings serves between 15 to 20 different flavors of cupcakes daily, and they bake throughout the day to keep the customers smiling, and

Paying It Forward By Diane Galemmo State Rep. Mike Fasano donated about $40,000 of his leftover campaign funds. The top beneficiary was Volunteer Way, which runs a food bank. Fasano gave the group $10,000 to put toward a refrigerator truck and/or other operating expenses. Another cause close to his heart, AMIKids, got $5,000. The agency, formerly known as the Marine Institute, provides educational programs for at-risk children. It took a huge hit earlier this year when it lost a state contract and has had to put together a budget with assistance from the Pasco school district and the county government. Other beneficiaries in-

Fasano also gave to People for Haiti, an organization started by Trinity family practice physician Leo Vieira and his wife Guiga, and to Lost Angels Big and Small, an animal welfare group, as well as other agencies. Fasano says, “We didn’t ask for money, but people kept making contributions. I think some of them knew it would be going to a good cause.” Jessica Selk,10-year-old daughter of Jennifer and Wayne Selk, received a $1,000 grant from Dr.

Myron S. Graff of Smiles by Graff Orthodontics in its second quarterly essay contest about one’s charity of choice. Jessica wrote about her involvement with Cindy’s Pets and how important this organization is for the seniors and their pets. Jessica was proud to present the $1,000 check to the non-profit organization. As a volunteer, with the organization, Jessica sees their good work first-hand. Jessica reminds us you’re never too young to make a difference. The Genesis School Student Council members

held their annual canned food drive to support the Healthy Families PascoHernando program. The students are elected by their classes and represent each grade, kindergarten through fifth grades. The students join the Student Council because they enjoy helping their school and their community. Students learn to help those who are less fortunate. By collecting and delivering these items, students get a better understanding of the importance of giving, instead of taking. They are proud of their service to the people they are helping. Says 2nd-grader Isaiah Perez, “It was helpful for the people that are having a bad time. I am glad we got cans for them.”

The Starkey Family Makes Sweet $54 Million Dollar Deal By Diane Galemmo The Starkey family has sold its 2,500-acre ranch to Connecticutbased private equity firm Wheelock Street Capital for $54 million. The project will be managed by Reed Berlinsky of Florida-based Gentry Land Company. Back in 2008, the Pasco County Board of Commissioners had approved an innovative expansion project, which the Starkey family was planning to develop with a vision toward the future. Trey and Frank Starkey had hoped construction would begin in 2010. The Starkey Brothers’ plan was to turn the remainder of their grandfather J.B. Starkey, Sr.’s original 16,000acre cattle ranch, purchased in 1937, into a distinct town-and-country community. Trey says, “It (would be) a return to the way development was done before World War II when the pedestrian was king, or at least the auto was of less concern. Parks, plazas, piazzas [and more] were the norm, sur-

46

rounded by dense urban development, sidewalks, tree lined avenues, mom and pop stores.” Their proposal had included 1,415 multi-family residential units (condos, apartments and townhouses), 2,870 single-family dwelling units and a 100-room hotel. Plans also called for 5,050 housing units, about 750,000 square feet of retail, office and light industrial space and 220 hotel rooms. At that time, the family had also proposed

a 30,000-sq.-ft. day care center, a 120bed Adult Care Living Facility (ACLF), and a 16-screen multiplex theatre. Currently, however, the day care center, the ACLF and the multiplex theatre are not mentioned as being part of Wheelock’s project. With the sale to Wheelock, Starkey Ranch will still preserve over three-fourths of the original ranch, and now, says Trey, “The rest can be redeveloped in a responsible manner.”

FEBRUARY 2013

The project is currently approved for 5,050 homes, 450,000 square feet of retail, office, and medical space, 300,000 square feet for light industrial use and 220 hotel rooms. Trey Starkey says, “I know they’ll be able to pull it off…Wheelock has the horsepower to do this. It’s a bittersweet deal.” He adds, “It’s a wonderful piece of land, but we’ve been able to share it with a number of people. Now the rest can be developed in a responsible manner.” The hotel entitlements made the project especially appealing to Wheelock, since the company has a division that specializes in hotel development. Berlinsky believes Florida’s housing market and especially the Tampa Bay area is ready for a rebound after five years of recession. “Wheelock is an opportunistic company that looks at key markets in real estate,” says Berlinsky. “Tampa is one of the key markets we looked at, and we considered future corridors with potential for growth. Starkey Ranch is a piece of property that meets all these criteria. As we

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

learned more about it, we felt like it had more viability every day.” Berlinsky says Wheelock would spend at least six months planning, envisioning and modeling the community. He continues, “This is our time to really decide what the community is going to look like and what we’re going to call it. It’ll probably be a year before we make any announcements regarding builders.” The first phase of construction will likely take place toward the center of the property, around a future elementary/middle school and park site.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Berlinsky expects cooperative interaction among groups, especially during the first phase of the construction (which will likely take place toward the center of the property), which is expected to include a future elementary/middle school, parks, bike trails and walking areas. The planned community will be along S.R. 54, considered by the Starkeys to be a prime location near Gunn Highway and the Suncoast Parkway, two of Pasco’s busiest commuting routes to Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties.

News Briefs by Diane Galemmo Seven Springs Middle School Rewarded for its Community Service For more than a decade, servicelearning classes (SLC) at Seven Springs Middle School have been helping the community with its projects. Recently students in this year’s service learning program welcomed Steven Kemler, CEO of Ultimate Medical Academy (where students learn professions related to Healthcare). Kemler came to the school to present the program with a $1,500 donation from his school to theirs. With the money, the SLC program will be able to continue teaching young people the value of having a positive impact on their community. Kemler expressed his appreciation for the work the students do. “I’m a strong believer in community service,” he said. “I’m just super excited to see students getting involved at a younger age.” Seven Springs Middle School has had its service learning class for 11 years. “We are the longest continu-

48

ous service learning class in this part of America,” says teacher Dorothy Taylor. The class had been created from Florida Learn and Serve, which in turn was part of Learn and Serve America, a federal program designed to give young people the chance to get involved with their community by integrating service projects with classroom learning. Students identify projects in their school or community, then research, organize and actively participate in those projects. Part of the process is writing a grant for each project from the class’ annual budget. But near the end of the 2010-11 school year, the federal Learn-and-Serve program was discontinued due to budget cuts, and the Seven Springs program found itself unfunded and having to figure out how to keep afloat. Last year, an article in The Suncoast News about the situation prompted the SWM Group, a Merrill Lynch financial advisory team, and the Bank of America to pledge

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

matching funds of up to $1,500 each for any money the students could raise. The two companies renewed their matching fund pledge again this year. In addition, Seven Springs Middle School Principal Phil Kupczyk was able to find some room in the school’s budget to help support the program. Kemler, who is acquainted with Taylor and her husband, got intrigued when he saw the link to the SLC page on the middle school website. Ultimate Medical Academy offers several health care training and degree programs at its Clearwater and Tampa campuses, as well as online. More information about Ultimate Medical Academy can be found at www.ultimatemedical.edu. As Kemler looked at the long list of recent and current projects, he noticed that not one was medically related. “He emailed me and said if we could come up with a medical service project, he could support it,” Taylor said. In keeping with the class’s emphasis on putting responsibility and decision-making on the students’

shoulders, Taylor let them decide what to do. The kids voted, deciding on All Children’s Hospital and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. For All Children’s Hospital, they will have a toy drive and personally distribute the gifts at the pediatric medical center in St. Petersburg. They also plan on having a tent at the next Relay for Life, selling goods of some kind. “What you guys are doing is great,” Kemler says. “It’s the right thing to do. Helping other people adds to your own life.” Young Trinity Actor Heads for Broadway Last summer 11year-old Joshua Colley from Longleaf in Trinity landed a dream role as Gavrouche in Les Miserables. Thousands of applicants across the nation applied, and it was Joshua who was chosen. It was a key role in the 25th anniversary U.S. tour of the renowned musical; Gavrouche sang seven songs, both solo and with the cast.

And now Joshua is heading to Broadway. There, he will play the character of Les in the Disney musical Newsies at the Nederlander Theatre on Broadway in New York City. He is scheduled to start rehearsals with the cast on Feb. 18. Newsies is set in New York City at the turn of the century. Newsies is the rousing tale of a charismatic newsboy and the leader of a ragged band of “newsies.” In the United States ‘newsboys’ or ‘newsies,’ were the main distributors of newspapers to the general public from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Although Joshua will be missing school for several more months, the tour has professional ontour educators. Newsies won two Tony awards in 2012 for best original score and best choreography. “We’re just ‘over the moon’ excited,” says his father, Brad, speaking from Les Miserables‘ last national tour stop in Kalamazoo, MI. It’s obvious that talent runs in the family. Joshua’s parents, Robbie Lynn and Brad, along with his twin brother Cameron, who sings, does ventriloquism and comedy, started the Playin’ Around Theatre company

in 1999. They own, operate and star in children’s productions, which go on the road to various school, libraries, theaters and other venues. Their quality of educational and entertaining adaptations of classic fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast and Jack in the Beanstalk have been very popular and have earned them many accolades. Say his parents, “We can’t explain how proud of him [Joshua] we are. He is a consummate professional. The sense of professionalism he displays on the stage surpasses his years for sure.” County Commissioners Approve Land Deal to Bring Park to Trinity In February 2011 our publication reported that Trinity residents were still waiting for a park that the county promised them back in March 2003. One of the glitches has been that Pasco County can afford to build parks but cannot afford to operate and maintain them. Now, ten years later, residents are merely one step closer to getting that long-awaited park. In November 2012, county commissioners unani-

mously approved an agreement that would return 24 acres south of Trinity Boulevard to Adam Smith Enterprises (ASE), the developer that built much of Trinity. The details are still being worked on, but the idea is for ASE, who originally donated the land to the county for a park, to build the park itself. The agreement would require that the Trinity Master Association use the land only for recreation and drainage. The developer would have to give up any right to park impact fee credits it received for the site. Any impact fees paid in the Trinity development would be able to be used to buy land or build a district park in another location, but still in the same impact fee zone. And the county would hold aside four or five acres for a future library. The conveyance of the property to the Master Association will eliminate the uncertainty that the county could surplus the property in the future and sell it for a different use. Another glitch is the developer mentioned the possibility of a private park open only to Trinity residents. If that were the case, county officials

could not justify the roughly $600,000 in fee waivers it gave the company for the initial land donation. After considering the offer, county commissioners told County Administrator John Gallagher to work out a deal, as long as the park is open to the public. No construction costs are yet available, but assistant county administrator Dan Johnson said the price tag would probably be in line with that of Lake Lisa Park near Embassy Hills in Port Richey. That project cost about $434,000. ASE offered $60,000 to help maintain the park, but Lew Friedland, president of Adam Smith Enterprises, told commissioners that maintenance costs for the proposed Trinity Park would be about $35,000 a year. That means the company’s contribution would help pay for only about two years. Developers envision a park with walking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, a picnic shelter and a dog park. The site is adjacent to the county fire station #16 on Trinity Boulevard near S.R. 54.

“NRC” Continued from page 1 Dr. Kerr is passionate about Rejuvenation Medicine and strives to be at the forefront of the scientific community in order to help the patients at National Rejuvenation Centers (NRC) regain their passion for life. NRC, located on US 19 N in Palm Harbor behind Lee Roy Selmon’s restaurant, is not an anti-aging clinic. Dr. Kerr explains, “The term anti-aging really doesn’t make sense because people are going to age. What we offer is Rejuvenation Medicine, which is a combination of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, nutrition and exercise that is different for every patient because every patient is different. Our goal is to bring our patients’ hormone levels back to that of a healthy, athletic 20-year-old so they have the energy and ability to do the things they want to do. Not only that, we want to help them look better too.” Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been around for years and has had its share of controversy but Dr. Kerr explains that advances in this area of medicine is literally changing lives. “Bio-identical HRT is a lot different than traditional HRT,” says Dr. Kerr. “For one thing, you can’t just give a patient one hormone and expect all of their hormone levels to be balanced and optimized. We go over each patient’s medical history in detail and keep a close check on his or her blood work throughout his or her treatment. We do comprehensive blood work complete with hormone panels at the onset of care to devise a treatment plan specific to the patient’s needs. I want all of my patients’ blood profiles to be perfect.” He explains that by balancing hormones, the body is actually protected. “Real progesterone makes women feel good, decreases PMS, in-

54

creases sex drive and it’s anti-carcinogenic – it’s good stuff!” Of course, anything that you take has side effects, right? Dr. Kerr does say that NRC patients have reported side effects during treatment –body fat loss, better muscle tone, better sex life, energy, elevated mood, clearer thinking and clarity, and an overall feeling of wellbeing and happiness. Joining the Rejuvenation Nation Dr. Kerr has always been passionate about hormone therapy, nutrition, and exercise. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida and then earned his D.C. degree from Logan University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1998. Working with some of the leading minds in hormone therapy, exercise and nutrition for over two decades, he really wanted to help people live their best lives, and when his own father began to grow older and lose his love for life, Dr. Kerr looked into integrating rejuvenation medicine into his own practice. He recalls, “My mother called me one day and said my dad was dying. He had suffered too many strokes and he was frail. I said, ‘Dad, you’ve got to try this stuff.’” His father, who is almost 80, was not interested in anything and was going to bed at 4:30 in the afternoon. “Around the five-week mark [after starting bio-identical HRT] I stopped by after work to find my dad throwing a football with a kid from down the street! Now, he feels so good that we have to tell him to slow down.” After seeing the difference in his own father, Dr. Kerr became dedicated to helping others reclaim their lives, and really enjoy every moment, so he founded the National Rejuvenation Centers. The main goal for the doctors at National Rejuvenation Centers is to

Patients feel comfortable talking with Dr. Kerr about their health concerns and their expectations from treatment at National Rejuvenation Centers educate their patients, and the public, on the new direction of hormone replacement. Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is different because it is made up of supplemental doses of hormones that have a chemical structure identical to the hormones that the human body already creates, and it is becoming a very popular solution to the stressful lives that so many people are leading. Many people are turning to Rejuvenation Medicine. In fact, according to her website, even Oprah is using it. There was a time when this type of treatment was only for the wealthy, but that isn’t the case at NRC. “I wanted to make this affordable for the average person,” says Dr. Kerr. NRC’s patients are from all walks of life, from civil service employees to millionaires, men and women are finding renewed joy for life and boundless energy with the help of the doctors, trainers, and nutrition experts at NRC. Patients See and Feel the Difference NRC Makes Arman E., a certified personal trainer in Trinity who is 49, says, “I have noticed much improved energy levels since starting my program [at

NRC].” Most patients notice that they sleep better. This was one of the first things that Dr. Kerr noticed in himself. He says, “When I started, one of the first things I noticed was better sleep which your body needs – it’s recovering while you sleep.” Catherine A. is 46 and started the program just over a year ago. She shares, “I have noticed changes in muscle tone, skin tone, and I sleep 8 hours per night easily!” Cat loves the benefits she has experienced and says her sex drive and her energy level is great. She also appreciates the fact the Dr. Kerr considers your entire medical background and encourages patients to talk to their other doctors about everything they are doing. “This program is highly recommended with the caveat that you share all information with your General Practitioner and GYN (if you are a female). I am a firm believer that ALL doctors should be involved and engaged with what their patient is doing regarding supplements, meds and natural hormones. It is also critical to understand that a healthy lifestyle is important. Exercise, healthy eating habits and CHEATING every now-and-again is a MUST for a

happy life!” Dr. Kerr agrees, “We educate people on how to eat healthy every day, but if you go to the Cheesecake Factory, have a piece of cheesecake!” Cynthia and her husband Steve Byrd, 48, love the way NRC has worked for them. Cynthia says, “I just wanted to let you know how happy I’ve been since I made the decision to get started with your practice and being started on my hormone therapy program. It’s great to find someone like you who is not only knowledgeable in the HRT field, but also very thorough with patient screening, personable, and caring with your clients. Your physician-monitored program has worked wonders for me so far and it is exciting to know that I am still in the beginning phase of my program. I am in my mid-40s and after only a few weeks, I noticed better muscle tone, a leaner physique, better sleep habits and, most importantly, an overall better feeling of wellbeing and a zest for life.” Mike K., who is 65, says, “The NRC protocol has enabled me to meet all of my goals relative to coping with my aggressive work/travel schedule, personal training gains and overall

health and wellbeing. I’ve been able add muscle detail without weight gain and through diet and exercise, have been able to eliminate some medication.” Tom D., 57, says, “I have been seeing Dr. Kerr at the National Rejuvenation Centers for over one year. Since starting the program I have more energy. My metabolism has increased and I have lost 12 pounds in the first 6 months. I am getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night and waking up refreshed and ready to tackle my day.” NRC patient Donna, who will be 53 this April, says, “A big thanks to Dr. Kerr and staff for making a difference in my life. After only six months, I no longer have problems sleeping, don’t experience night sweats, my thinking is clearer and sharper, my memory improved and I have found that my immune system is stronger and my energy level has increased. I’ve been told that I look better and that my mood is always good. I look forward to the months ahead knowing that things will continue to improve both inside and out! I’m a fan – thanks again Dr. Kerr!”

Start Your Own Journey to Vitality The first step in becoming a patient is to meet with the doctors at NRC and have blood work taken to see whether you are hormone deficient in any way. Not surprisingly, most people over 35 are hormone-deficient, because hormones tend to drop out about that time in both men and women. NRC patients also receive a personalized nutrition and exercise protocol as part of their treatment plan, and many patients not only feel better, but lose a good deal of body fat during their treatment. One female patient who came in seeking relief for severe menstrual cramps was pleasantly surprised when she started losing weight. Not only were her menstrual symptoms resolved, but also after shedding a burdensome 50 pounds, she looks as great as she feels. “There are men and women who are doing everything possible in the gym with no real results. That changes with bio-identical HRT. Trainers refer frustrated clients to us all the time because when your hormones are at the ideal levels, when you work out it actually works,” says Dr. Kerr. NRC isn’t just an HRT clinic. Pa-

Donna, age 52

tients are provided with an individualized training protocol and find that they achieve much better results and don’t have to work out as much or as frequently as they thought it would take to look and feel the way they do. The doctors and staff at NRC are dedicated to helping each client get the results they desire, whether it means changing up an exercise routine, adjusting hormone levels or making better choices for a healthier diet. The team of doctors at NRC is dedicated to continuing their education in the fascinating study of rejuvenation medicine, and is committed to treating each of their patients to the best of their abilities. If you are looking for a way to feel better, look better and have more energy, consider letting the doctors at National Rejuvenation Centers be your confidante for health. They make it affordable and convenient for you and help patients regain their passion for life every day. National Rejuvenation Centers is located at 34254 U.S. Hwy 19 N. in Palm Harbor. Office hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri., 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and 9 a.m.–12 p.m. on Tues. Please call 727-785-5652 or visit online at www.nrcenters.com for more info.

An Outback Steakhouse veteran, Matthew Wade has worked for the company since he was 16 years old, and has worked at 30 locations all across the country from here to Seattle. He came on board as Managing

can choose an entrée, a soup or Signature Side Salad and a side per person, and either an “Aussie-tizer®” or a dessert to share. Start dinner off right with one of Outback’s “Aussie-tizers®” and share (well, you don’t have to share) the Bloomin’ Onion® or the Coconut Shrimp or even their Seared Ahi Tuna with someone you love. From their Grilled Chicken on the Barbie to their Filet with Mild Mushroom Sauce, there is something for everyone in your dinner party. Meal time on the Outback is exciting, different and delicious, which is why Outback offers a variety of specially prepared Signature Steaks, all cooked the way you want them. Your choice, made to order.

When asked what his favorites are, Matthew Wade says, “To start, I like the Crab and Avocado Stack. We start with an Avocado base that is piled high with marinated crab meat and then topped with minced tomato basil and a drizzle of wasabi vinaigrette.” He adds, “My favorite entrée is the New Zealand Lamb® because it’s something unique to a casual dining restaurant. You can’t get it everywhere, and it’s served with our homemade cabernet sauce. It’s good!” In addition to their regular menu, Outback Steakhouse is offering a new Perfect Pairs menu for a limited time that puts some amazing combinations together that are just made for each other, like their Crab & Avocado Stack® and a Naturally Skinny ‘Rita® to start, or their Outback Special and Lobster Mac®, which is an original Outback mac and cheese that adds lobster and bacon. Yum! Another Perfect Pair menu option is their Steak and Seafood Mixed Grill, which offers their Signature Sirloin and pairs it with seasoned and seared shrimp and scallops. Also, don’t forget about dessert! Right now, they are offering a Cinnamon Apple Oblivion®, which is made of vanilla ice cream topped with warm

cinnamon apples, cinnamon croutons, pecans, caramel sauce and whipped cream. That’s just a sampling of this special menu, available in Trinity for a limited time. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and Outback has you covered. From February 14th – 17th, (that’s a Thursday-Sunday), Outback will be offering a special meal for two that includes a Bloomin’ Onion® to share, two 9 oz.
