Where do you turn for help and advice in preparing a standout resume and learning to navigate a successful interview? She is dynamic, and dedicates herself fully to helping people get back to work. Connections has a row of computers where people can come in and work on their resumes and check job listings; in fact, some even need to learn how to use the computer and there is help for them too. club to support Volunteer Way, the local food bank, Elfers CARES Senior Center, Growing Great Moms, and the Audubon Society to build birdhouses. We also donated money to help a local Holiday resident to receive a kidney transplant. We sent gift boxes to military men, supported the Colonial Civic Center with their fundraising to restore and maintain the clubhouse, as well as other worthy causes. Elfers Centennial Garden Club holds its meetings every first Monday of the month at the Colonial Hills Civic Center located at 3852 Prime Place in New Port Richey. On some months, instead of a meeting, the members host walk-through tours of their gardens followed by an Afternoon Tea. Members get together every month to hear invited speakers from the County Master Gardeners. We hold workshops on different projects like making steppingstones for our gardens, or making Christmas centerpieces. We also have our annual Christmas party where we exchange plants or play a game. So far the club has sponsored several field trips, which include Florida Botanical Garden, Homosassa Butter-

We plan to visit many more interesting places that interest our members. Historic Baker House: With the leadership of Carol Azbell, the club president, the historic Baker House has been re-opened to the public. The Baker House is located on the grounds of Centennial Library on Moog Road and is the oldest Crackerstyle house in West Pasco County. The club is open to the public and welcomes new members. Membership is $12 annually or $15 annually per couple. If you have plants to share, have the time to volunteer for the plant sale to help with our fundraising projects, and want to gain some new knowledge about gardening, then this club is for you. Patience, Guidance and Love I have worked in the field of childcare for 25 years now. I still find it to be a learning and rewarding experience. After my children were born, it became essential for me to learn and teach them the fundamentals of life while becoming a productive citizen. I have learned that there are many aspects to understanding children. These characteristics are best handled with tolerance, steadiness, and equality. Another aspect is understanding personalities. One in particular is expressing sensitivity, which refers to the ease or diffi-

culty in which a child responds to a situation. It reminds me that this is the child temper at work, and to learn not to take their intense emotions personally. We all can contribute and teach children how to forgive so they can move on and not dwell on feelings and emotions. Parents should teach and show through actions, how to express strong reaction in a socially appropriate way. My position now is to continue to nurture the children and in return reap the reward of seeing them smile. Gloria Sams Safety-Land Day Care

The key to helping clients deal with today’s economy and prepare for the future…education. Knowledge is power! With an uncertain economy in our future, many retirees and baby boomers are concerned about whether their pensions and retirement savings will last the rest of their lives. Whether you are already retired, or within five to ten years of retiring, you need to know how to protect your money and understand how tax laws will affect your retirement. In addition, there are often legitimate adjustments that can be made now to reduce tax liabilities of which many people are unaware. With roughly 10,000 Baby Boomers turning 65 today and about 10,000 more will cross that threshold every day for the next 19 years, many are looking for the answers on when the best age is to take social security, the thresholds of when social security is taxed and how to not outlive their retirement assets. “If clients are already collecting social security when they come to us they want to know how they can reduce or eliminate taxes on not only social security income, but their overall taxes as well,” says Ed Rizzotto. “We spend many hours with our clients to put sound plans in place by sharing ‘real time’ tax, income and social security analysis through some of the most sophisticated software. “We want our clients to leave our office with a better understanding on what their income needs will be in retirement, and how to control, reduce or possibly eliminate taxes.”

Ed Rizzotto Concierge Level Service While taxes are a large part of The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, the majority of their clients also utilize the firm’s other services including investments, retirement planning, long term care, annuities, life insurance, wills and trusts. Clients have access to experts in the fields of taxes, finance, insurance, and the services of elder law attorneys who handle wills, trusts and overall estate planning. Ed says, “Clients like the opportunity we provide to get everything taken care of in one place.” “When people come in to see us,” says Ed, “the first thing we do is dedicate an hour or of our time to complete an overall review that covers the last couple of years, including going over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and discussing their important concerns to determine how we can help them. Then, at a follow-up appointment, we present a thorough plan for them.” The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group offers guidance to each investor based on their unique investment profile while focusing on their financial goals. “Many people are concerned with the economy right now and preservation of funds is very important,” says Ed. “Saving on taxes, reducing or eliminating taxation on social security and protecting the financial wellbeing of a spouse after another’s death – those are things that my clients are concerned about. Today, people also want alternatives to the low interest rate environment provided by CDs and money market accounts. Those clients looking for something more tangible to invest in are turning to us for precious metals and other conservative investment vehicles of which they may have been previously unaware.” Rizzotto explains that being involved with his clients in all the key

areas of tax returns, insurance needs and investments allows his team to keep a keen eye on each client’s bottom line. “We’ve had people who had other advisors and financial planners who convinced them to make changes, not aware of the tax impacts,” says Ed. “To me the tax return is the most important document the client owns, that’s why it is the first thing we look at when the client meets us for their initial appointment. If there is an investment or change that could cause a taxable event – we know that up front.” Retirement Planning…Not Just For Retirees While The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group’s area of expertise over the years has been working with retirees we also work with clients of all ages in the area of retirement planning. “You’re never too young or too old to start saving for retirement,” says Rizzotto. We have found that many people we meet that are still working have changed jobs about every five to seven years, and many of those people left their retirement plans at their old employers (i.e. 401k, 403b, and 457 plans, etc). Many of these plans can be rolled over to individual IRAs or Roth IRAs, thus giving the client more control and the ability to have someone to advise them. that speak volumes. Roofing customer, Jeff DeLigio, recently said, “Team Farrell is a great company that you can always count on!” A Company You Can Trust Team Farrell was born in 2006 when Tina Farrell started a roofing company out of a shed in her backyard. Her husband, Steve, was a roofing contractor at the time that had a strong work ethic and an even

stronger commitment to have things done right. Soon, they had successful roofing company that quickly garnered positive reviews from customers all over Tampa Bay. In 2011, Rich Allen brought his building experience to the team and so the home services part of the business began to take shape. Since then, Team Farrell has grown to include Farrell Rescue, which protects and rescues homes that are damaged by fire, water or mold. Other new additions to

Today, Team Farrell is truly a team of contractors, all of whom are committed to providing their best work, so that you can feel safe, protected and secure in your beautiful home. Team Farrell goes above-and-beyond to meet their customers’ satisfaction; they have inhouse background approved employees to get the job done to customer satisfaction. If you’re looking for a company that will quote you a fair price, complete the work within the time allotted, and make sure that you are happy throughout the process, then let Team Farrell be your go-to company for any of your home’s needs. Speaking with Regan Weiss who joined Team Farrell to lead the sales and marketing force, it’s no wonder that the company has built such a solid name. Regan’s respect for his coworkers and the other team members made it clear that this business is something that they are all proud of, and when you choose someone to work on your home, you definitely want to choose a company who takes that kind of pride in what they do each day. Weiss said, “We’ve been growing leaps and bounds, and we do very good and creative work. We offer free estimates, free 3D renderings for our home services customers, we do a great deal of research to stay with current trends and most importantly our community work.” He had a lot of

praise to give to the company owners Steve and Tina Farrell...adding, “Tina Farrell is dedicated to giving back to our community and Tina has helped so many local families.” Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Team Farrell has a staff that can accomplish putting in two to three roofs a day, and according to Weiss, they do a kitchen and a bathroom at least once a week. He stated, “We try to make the construction process as stress free as possible but there are hidden conditions and many variables that take may take place... Bottom line we will do whatever it takes to meet the customers needs and timeline.” Call Team Farrell for Dependable Roofing Team Farrell began as a roofing company better known as Farrell Roofing, and their commitment to using excellent products, excellent workmanship and superior quality has allowed their company to grow. Servicing both residential and commercial roofing projects, and using a plethora of materials from shingle to tile, Team Farrell can be counted on to put on a roof that will last a long time. A GAF/Master Elite Roofer, Farrell Roofing combines craftsmanship and modern materials, with a goal to create 100% customer satisfaction at its core. Most of all, they understand that purchasing a roof is a long-term investment that protects you and your family. Mark Kenny had his roof repaired with Team Farrell, saying, “I chose to award the job to Farrell Roofing after doing research with the Better Business Bureau, obtaining estimates with

other roofing companies and hearing testimonials from satisfied customers. Steve promptly came out to give me an estimate the same day that I called. Upon meeting with eight contractors, Steve’s quote was still the lowest and his timeline to start and complete the job was the shortest and met our expectation. The job itself took less time than what was planned and the cleanup was immaculate. My experience with Farrell Roofing has been very positive and I have since given many referrals to my friends and business associates. Remodeling, Home Additions, Bathroom Makeovers & More If you spend your weekends watching “Love It or List It” like a lot of us, and you really wish you could remodel your kitchen or bathroom, Team Farrell makes it affordable, doable and incredible. While other companies might come into your home and try and sell you on their vision, Team Farrell’s goal is to realize your vision beautifully and affordably. Water, Mold & Fire Rescue While we may never want to

think about the need for a rescue team in our homes, it happens every single day. Regardless of how it happened, Team Farrell can help. The goal of the rescue crew is to offer fast, efficient and immediate service by certified rescue personnel. Upon arrival they secure your property, assess the damage and begin making a recovery plan, and then continue to help you throughout the entire process, from working with insurance adjusters to complete recovery. Dr. Jared Frattini Changes Lives by Putting Patients First By Julie Kanehl When a patient has been diagnosed with a disease such as colon or rectal cancer, or other ailments such as hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, appendicitis, colon polyps, gall bladder issues, or hernias, it can be hard and even embarrassing to talk about. It’s incredibly important in this situation to turn to a doctor who is a specialist, and one who can treat you and get you back on your feet again using the latest technologies and surgical techniques. Jared Frattini, M.D. is a Board Certified general and colorectal surgeon who chose this field so that he could have the benefit of creating long lasting relationships with his patients, with the goal of helping them have a better quality of life while dealing with diseases such as Crohn’s Disease, which can affect a person for their entire life. Dr. Frattini earned his medical degree from Georgetown University, and completed his general surgery training at Yale University. Dr. Frattini then went on to complete a year of fellowship training at The Cleveland Clinic in Florida in the field of colon and rectal surgery. A former Assistant Professor of

Surgery at USF, Dr. Frattini has been published multiple times authoring 18 peer-reviewed articles, as well as writing portions of a book on his approach to his specialty, which he has presented at national surgical meetings. Moving out of the academic realm, Dr. Frattini brought his surgical expertise to the Gulf Coast Surgical Group, which has been a thriving practice for many years. Gulf Coast Surgical Group is located at 5347 Main St. in New Port Richey. There, Dr. Frattini works with Dr. Arthur Verga, his partner at the practice, who has more than 30 years of experience. From flare-ups to hernias, to problems that need surgical intervention, Dr. Frattini is an experienced young surgeon who is able to provide minimally invasive, laparoscopic and even robotic surgical techniques, which can speed up healing time, allow for a much smaller incision, and reduce the length and duration of hospital stays. Specialists in this field learn the particulars of preserving nerve function, which can change lives. For example, often times people who suffer from colon or rectal cancer can face sexual or bladder dysfunction. Dr. Frattini will take the time to talk to his patients

about all of the risks involved, and to try and find the best possible solutions. In fact, Dr. Frattini works closely with many of the oncology groups in the area, helping patients receive cohesive and coordinated care when it is necessary. He said, “When you have a colon or rectal disease, there’s more than just the surgical fix to the medical problem. There’s also each patient’s quality of life to consider. As a specialist I can hone in on the complicated thought process while taking the time to bond with my patients.” He adds proudly, “I still have patients who come from as far as Sebring and Sarasota to see me, and that’s because I believe I offer the right kind of care.” One patient recently said, “I think Dr. Frattini is a great surgeon. His office staff is very quick and efficient. The care he gave me went above-and-beyond. I have referred my family and friends to Dr. Frattini. I can’t brag about him enough.” Dr. Frattini performs procedures at the Medical Center of Trinity, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, and the Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point. Dr. Frattini believes that no one

Working with his patients every step of the way, Dr. Frattini puts his patient’s needs and requests ahead of everything else. Another of Dr. Frattini’s patients truly raves about their experience, saying “I had colon surgery performed by Dr. Frattini in April, 2013. He is FANTASTIC - always told me the truth -

told me what to expect - always took the time to answer any questions I had. The day of surgery, I was very scared - I asked if I could see Dr. Frattini right before surgery - he came to see me - held my hand - I told him I was scared and that I had claustrophobia and did not want to see the operating or recovery room - I just wanted to wake up in my bed. I also wanted to hold onto a photo of my grandson I had in my hand for courage. Dr. Frattini made sure that everything I requested happened - he stayed with me until they gave me a shot and I woke up later in my hospital bed with my grandson’s photo still in my hand! I was able to go home on the third day. I have so much trust in Dr. Frattini - he is the ONLY doctor I would go to.” Dr. Frattini says, “My care philosophy is more of a one-on-one doctor patient relationship that emphasizes that a patient should call me at any time if they have any questions or concerns. That’s the kind of relationship that I want.” He adds, “The most rewarding day… Was when I first saw a patient after their procedure and they immediately gave me a hug. It means I did something that they had a benefit from.” If your doctor says that you have a problem that effects your lower digestive tract, which includes your intes-

Medical Center of Trinity Advanced Cardiac Services Close to Home By Kim Thomas “Time is Muscle!” declared Medical Center of Trinity’s Director of Education, Janet Baile, RN, MSN, at a recent meeting where I had the opportunity to sit down with members of the Cardiovascular Team, all of whom were excited to share the news of the addition of open heart surgery services this month at Medical Center of Trinity – a perfect way to honor patients during February’s American Heart Month. Now, HCA West Florida offers two stellar heart surgery centers right here in Pasco County – at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point to the north, and right near your own neighborhood at Medical Center of Trinity, which is strategically and conveniently located in the tri-county area of Pasco, Pinellas and Hillsborough on State Road 54 near Little Road, and just minutes from East Lake. When you or

someone you love needs immediate, life-saving measures, and when “Time is Muscle,” it is good to know that you can receive the best possible advanced cardiac care – including open heart surgery – right in your own community. Not only was Medical Center of Trinity built to exceed stateof-the-art standards, every room is private and every need of patients and their families has been anticipated and provided for. Fast response time was a hot topic around the table with members of the Cardiovascular Team at Medical Center of Trinity. These folks know that when it comes to heart attacks, every second saved means more heart muscle saved and a better outcome for the patient. In meeting with these dedicated healthcare professionals, one point was driven home over and over – everyone needs to recognize the symptoms of heart attack and act immediately, not hesitating to call 911!

Dr. DeSantis, who has performed more than 4,000 Open Heart surgeries, says, “This is going to be a great addition for patients and their families in Southern Pasco and Northern Pinellas.” Dr. Bayron says, “The collaboration by community, administration, physicians and everyone involved has set us on the path to offer a quality open heart surgery program to our community.” And Dr. Javeed adds, “I know it will be a high quality program and serve our community just right.” Dr. Agarwal took a lot of time to explain the process that Medical Center of Trinity is going through to beTrinity Area Neighborhood News

come an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). “The criteria is very strict,” he explained. “There are eight key elements that must be met and in order to maintain accreditation from the SCPC, every hospital has to go through the accreditation process every three years.” Every team member has worked diligently to make sure every facet of cardiac care merges seamlessly, knowing that faster response times save lives. Patients arriving with chest pain are seen immediately and every case is reviewed to make sure that every second is utilized, giving patients the best possible shot at a great outcome – a strong, healthy heart. “We can have a team ready in the ER within minutes once we know we are getting a patient with a heart attack,” explained Dr. Agarwal. “EMS actually sends us the EKG while the ambulance is still in motion because every minute counts. If a patient comes in with chest pain, they are priority number one. That applies, whether that patient walks in the ER or comes by ambulance.” The difference is - besides the obvious that EMS personnel are qualified and have life-saving equipment – if you call 911, the EMS crew will also be able to perform an EKG that can be immediately transmitted to the hospital allowing them to be ready for you prior to your arrival and giving them vital information during transport. Dr Agarwal says, “That is why it is an important part of our community education to teach people to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack so they will call 911.” Excellence is what the Cardiovascular Team has come to expect, with the STEMI Team at Medical Center of Trinity exceeding national standards. The STEMI Team responds to patients exhibiting symptoms of segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or more simply put, heart attack. Medical Center of Trinity is proud of its response times and outcomes for patients needing life-saving

stents to open blocked vessels in the heart, and rightly so. Nancy Maysilles, Chief Nursing Officer at Medical Center, states, “If a person lives in this area and they are having chest pain, this is the hospital to come to. The ER is completely capable and there are a lot of elements to consider. Pasco County EMS is wonderful and has electronic communication directly with us from the field. Once we get a patient in the ER, it is a matter of minutes before they are in the cath lab [when needed].” The STEMI Team at Medical Center of Trinity not only boasts excellent response times, but also good outcomes for cardiac care patients. Dr. Agarwal explains, “When a patient comes in with chest pain, basically the goal is to open the blood vessels as quickly as possible. The national average [from intake to Stent procedure] is within 90 minutes, but we are doing very well here, averaging less than 60 minutes from the time the patient enters the ER. We are one of the best in the area.” To have a stellar program, education is a key component. Director of Education, Janet Baile, elaborates, “We have cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and cardiac anesthesiologists teaching our nurses, and all of our RNs are trained according to the gold standard of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Medical Center of Trinity is actually a training center for the AHA, which is difficult to achieve and something we are very proud of.” Director of Cardiac Catheterization Bobbi Altman says, “A lot of our RNs are nationally certified in their specialty and our doctors [in the heart program] are Board Certified in Cardiology and Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology, which is an advanced certification.” In going forward with offering advanced cardiac services, Medical Center of Trinity’s goal is to meet the highest standards in and out of the operating room, from the nursing and

surgical staff, to the way patients are treated after surgery through cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac procedures currently offered at Medical Center of Trinity are open heart surgeries (targeted to start mid-February) including coronary artery bypass and valve repair or replacement, vascular services, minimally invasive cardiac catheterization and diagnostic testing. The future of Medical Center of Trinity will no doubt offer even more advanced medical services. Marketing Director Mary Sommise says, “Our goal is to keep adding programs and services that will allow the residents of this area to stay close to their families and friends while receiving advanced medical care right here in the community.” Community education is another important service provided by Medical Center of Trinity, which continually offers educational seminars on a variety of health topics including heart health. For American Heart Month, several educational seminars are offered. All presentations are at 12 p.m. at the Medical Center of Trinity. A light lunch will be served. Reservations are required and can be made at 727-834-5630. On Feb. 19, “Heart and Soul” will be presented by Carlos Bayron, MD Interventional Cardiology, who will discuss recent scientific findings are linking music to hearts and heart health. In fact, the beat of your heart may be more closely connected to musical beats than you know. On Feb. 27, “I’m Having A Heart Attack; Now What?” will be presented y Rias Ali, MD Interventional Cardiology. Participants will learn that not all heart attacks have shooting pain down your left arm. Many times, the signs and symptoms are ignored and blamed on stress and fatigue. Know the warning signs and know what to do when you, or someone near you, are having a heart attack. On Feb. 28 – “The Way to Your Heart from Your Wrist: Cardiac Catheterization Reinvented,” presented by Rami Akel, MD Interventional Cardiology, will explain a new approach to Cardiac Catheterization through a small artery in the wrist and the benefits to patients. “Connections” Continued from page 3 very depressed. They come in with their shoulders down and we are able to help them leave with their shoulders back – with hope. Many elderly now have to return to work out of necessity. One lady came in and she didn’t even know how to use a computer. We got her an email address and for her, it was the biggest thing! She was able to email her children and grandchildren out of state. She felt like she was part of the modern world and was able to get a part-time job at Bealls. A lot of elderly people are happy with seasonal work.” People come in every day to Connections and last year, they helped with 594 resumes. “We provided 5,188 services in just one year that wouldn’t have been provided in the county without the Connections Job Development Program,” explained Sheila. “It’s not just jobs; we try to find food, bus passes, housing…imagine how hard it is to focus on learning new skills and working on your resume when you haven’t had anything to eat in days. That is what we are seeing here. Sister Joan started this program 23 years ago and now the need is so much greater.

When I started volunteering and working with Sister Joan, we were working out of a tiny back office at the Old Lady Queen of Peace church on Washington Street, a building that was relocated to Sim’s Park.” The main thing that Sheila would like the public to know is that Connections is a non-profit program that depends on grants, donations and support from the community to keep it going. The biggest fundraiser is fast approaching and Connections hopes that this year’s 6th Annual Social Event Fundraiser will be the most successful to date. Sheila said, “We operate on a lean fiscal budget and from our fundraiser, not one penny goes to waste!” 6th ANNUAL SOCIAL EVENT FUND RAISER Saturday, March 15, 5:30 PM–– Connections Job Development Program will hold their annual fundraising event at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, located at 3535 Trophy Drive in New Port Richey. About Connections Connections Job Development Program has a 22+ year history of providing free comprehensive, personalized services for those seeking employment. In 1991 Sister Joan Foley visited Pasco County and as her knowledge of the area increased she discovered one of the major forces keeping many in a cycle of poverty was unemployment. The common theme from people was, “we need jobs” and “we need help to find jobs.” People needed someone to assist with employability skills training, a place that would

empower people and offer hope. Sister Joan, working from the trunk of her car, met individuals, neighborhood community leaders and agencies who were “stakeholders” in the county. Applicants for assistance grew and some grant money was forth coming enabling a counselor to be hired who shared Sister Joan’s passion for assisting all who sought help. In 2012-2013 fiscal year (Oct 1, 2012-Sept. 30, 2013) Connections provided 5080 free services to 816 new clients, including veterans, seniors having to return to work out of necessity, homeless or those on the verge of homelessness, recent college and high school graduates, emancipated minors, professionals and manual laborers who have been laid off, the disabled, ex-offenders and new residents to the area. Sheila Krautner, Connections’ Executive Director, continues Sister Joan’s mission that all who seek assistance at Connections will not be turned away. Connections Job Development program is a life-line for many unemployed and under-employed and assistance is given to all who seek services on their road to self-sufficiency. Today, the need is greater and the state grants are at zero; support for Connections is from Pasco County Board of Commis-

sioners, United Way of Pasco County, smaller grants from Bank of America and local philanthropic organizations, our Thrift Store at 6643 Hwy US 19 in New Port Richey and donors to our annual fund-raiser. Through a Community Development Block Grant in 2000, Connections relocated from the back room office of an old church on Washington Street to the present location on Main Street, New Port Richey. Services have grown through the years, employability skills training, resume writing and one-on-one counseling are still basic to the program. Computer training, online applications and other services have become a necessary step for many. Mock interviews with area employers and interview clothes from the Good Connections Thrift Store, a store Sister Joan opened to help fund the program, are provided as necessary. A 2nd location is now open for serving the unemployed at the Metropolitan Ministries at 3214 US 19 in Holiday. Drive Away Cancer! Join the 4th Annual Golf Outing at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club on March 30th Cancer is a disease that knows no mercy, it doesn’t discriminate; rather, it rages against the very young to the very old of every race and color and every economic level. Every year more and more people are in need of support provided by organizations that focus on those dealing with and recovering from cancer. And sometimes, cancer seems to attack a family. When cancer hit the Millian family, a local family with a strong connection to the community and a habit of giving back, young Cody Millian didn’t just grieve – he took action. Cody, whose family owns local air-conditioning and heating company Millian-Aire, started the JK Cancer Fund in memory of his beloved grandfather John Kubek, who passed away from cancer in January 2010. The very first Drive Away Cancer was held to benefit the JK Cancer Fund. What started out as the heartfelt senior project of then 17-year-old Cody Millian has steamrolled into an annual

42

golf outing that, as of June 2013, has raised $61,000 to support organizations such as American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, James P. Gills YMCA’s Livestrong program, and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, all of which will benefit from this year’s event. In its first year, Drive Away Cancer raised $10,000, far exceeding the Millian family’s expectations. Unfairly, cancer struck again and Sue Millian - Cody’s mom, John’s daughter, and the biggest supporter of Cody’s efforts was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sue attended the 2nd Annual Drive Away Cancer Golf Outing with no hair due to her personal battle against cancer. This family is not to be stopped, though. Sue is a survivor and two years ago joined other cancer survivors in the celebratory balloon release. With your support, Drive Away Cancer’s 4th Annual Golf Outing can be bigger than ever. Set for March 30 at the beautiful Seven Springs Golf

and Country Club (SSGCC) in New Port Richey (3535 Trophy Blvd), golfers can start registering at 11 a.m. for the 1 p.m. Shotgun Start. Every year the JK Cancer Fund Golf Outing is held at SSGCC, where golf pros show up every year to show support including Jack Gleason, Mark Haluska and Mark Boyko. It is only naturally that the golf outing is held at SSGCC. Sue Millian says, “Mom and dad lived there and dad [the late John Kubek] was huge into golfing.” Sue says that everyone at SSGCC is hugely supportive of Drive Away Cancer every year. One of the great programs that the 4th Annual Drive Away Cancer will support is the Livestrong program at the local YMCA in Trinity, which is a 12-week program designed to support not only adult cancer survivors, but their families too. Julio Vega, District Vice President of YMCA West Pasco County, says, “This is a free program and no connection to the YMCA is necessary. These families are

usually at the end of their wits, exhausted and with no money. This program helps them get strong and connected to others. It is through partnerships like the JK Cancer Fund that we can help strengthen the community. It takes strong community leaders like Sue Millian to help Cody Millian & us. I’ve been John Kubek involved in fundraising tournaments for 20 years and I’ve never seen anything like the JK Cancer Fund’s Drive Away Cancer. People come away knowing exactly

what they are there for – to help.” James P. Gills YMCA Adult Member & Wellness Services Director Denise Ferrara says, “When these kids come in here and see the pool and the kids’ gym, they are in awe! This program is great for survivors, but it is also good to see their kids making connections after going through so much.” Denise has a strong connection to Sue that began long before she supported her in her efforts fundraising. The two ladies became friends 18 years ago and bonded on the bleachers watching their kids play baseball, as spending late nights at the field in their roles as team moms. Denise jerked her thumb toward Sue, “This one will yell at you about staying up with your mammograms.” Every year, members of the community shows up to support Drive

Away Cancer and this year you can too. Coach Ubillus and the boys’ soccer team at J.W. Mitchell High School come out every year and Sue says they are always a favorite with the crowd. One thing is for certain, this is an outer that everyone will have fun at. There are great raffles, prizes, games set up at holes and more! Raffle tickets can win you big! How about Ruth Eckerd Hall performances, and tickets to big-name hockey and baseball games, plus restaurants gift certificates, gift baskets and much more! Sue and Cody are diligently gathering goodies. Sue says, “We always have so much great stuff. I want everyone who buys a raffle ticket to win something!” For more information, to register, donate for the raffles, volunteer or inquire about sponsorships, please contact Sue Millian at (727) 862-2100 or (727) 809-1695, sue@millian-aire.com or jkcancerfund@gmail.com. MacKinnon Jewelers Gives to RAF Pinellas Making it Possible to Deliver More Smiles! By Kim Thomas Tom MacKinnon and his staff at MacKinnon Jewelers in Trinity found a way to turn their holiday celebration into a fundraising opportunity to support a local charity that delivers flowers to those who need something positive to smile about. MacKinnon Jewelers hosted “Jewels for a Cause” featuring a trunk show by the famous jewelry designer Phillip Gavriel, who donated 10 percent of every purchase from his line to Random Acts of Flowers Pinellas. Tom MacKinnon matched him dollar-for-dollar and thanks to the success of the Jewels for a Cause event, Tom MacKinnon and Patrick Lainhart of MacKinnon Jewelers presented a check on January 13th for nineteen hundred dollars to Random Acts of Flowers Pinellas. There to accept the check was the founder of Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), Larsen Jay and RAF Pinellas Director of Mission Fulfillment Monica Kok

started the 501(c) (3) charity in Knoxville, TN with the mission to improve mental health through the power of giving flowers. After sustaining life-threatening injuries in July 2007 and being on the receiving end of cards and flowers, he realized how uplifting it was. When Larsen was finally able to leave his room, he noticed that many other patients did not have visitors or flowers – the very thing that helped him so much. Within moments the first “random act of flowers” delivery was made, with Larsen repurposing his own flowers and delivering them to patients in nearby hospital rooms. The memories of how a simple gesture touched his fellow patients compelled Larsen to form Random Act of Flowers in 2008. You can see a video of him telling his story at RAFPinellas.org. With its big menu, and the size of the restaurant, it’s not hard to get the best of both worlds. “Keira’s Corner” has many of your kids’ favorites for less than $7, as this is a restaurant designed and created by a family for your family. “Meeting Center” Continued from page 1 rent the space may bring their own food, drinks, decorations, lighting and more. Joanne Krapf, a managing partner at The Trinity Meeting Center, says, “We wanted to provide a place that was flexible. Everything we have is on wheels so that we can personalize the space for each individual event.” Krapf has a background in audio/visual sales, and her work has primarily been in designing conference facilities that would be able to provide an experience like this one. When she realized that Trinity was in desperate need, she decided to create a place for all of the Trinity professionals, organizations, small companies and groups that she knew would benefit from a center of this kind. Since it opened late last year, The Trinity Meeting Center has held conferences, luncheons, parties, receptions and even recitals. Already a hit with local companies including RE/MAX, Hipnique Studio, and Lifetech Instructional Services, The Trinity Meeting Center is also becoming a go-to for lawyers who need a local spot to

do mediations, depositions and more. Whether you work from home or need a meeting space that will accommodate a certain amount of people, many small companies have adopted The Trinity Meeting Center to be used as their public office. If you’ve ever tried to price out private rooms for a business function, you know that historically, it’s not an easy or even affordable thing to do. Many places require a large deposit, give you food and drink minimums, and don’t offer the proper environment or the right amount of parking. Those days are long gone, because The Trinity Meeting Center offers affordable rates for an impeccable space, and it all comes with Krapf’s help, experience and attention to detail. Actually, it’s possible that your guests won’t even think that you’ve rented the space, especially when they are greeted upon arrival by an event coordinator and directed to your meeting room using their brand new digital signage. Krapf says, “We take the time to help you plan each event, and will make sure that the space is set up the way that you would like to have it, and we are always here during your event!”
