Our Favorite Memory From 2013 submitted by Lauren Nolan We have many great memories from 2013, but there is one that stands above the rest. In 2012 we introduced our 2 sons, Gavin and Dylan, to the sport of wrestling. This sport has taught our families so much about ourselves. Dylan (8) had gone all of 2012 with out winning any tournaments and very few matches. He pressed on even with the mounting losses. In January of 2013 he won his first gold medal at a local tournament. A few more followed, enough so that it was recommended that he attend the Florida State Championships in Kissimmee. Up to the last minute we were hesitant, due to a sound defeat the week prior. Dylan assured us he would do well and we ventured to the center of the state. Dylan surprised everyone – including himself – by winning the first 3 matches and putting himself in the finals. As he prepped for the last match he was told that he accomplished his placing by himself and he should be very proud of making to the finals. Dylan then began to cry and doubt himself as the match started. The other kid had taken an early lead, and leading

into the final round Dylan, who was visibly upset stated that he could score and began to believe in himself. With 40 seconds to go he took the lead and never relinquished it. Once he won and began taking his ticket to the head table, with no one other then his father watching, he raised his hands and congratulated himself. He, with the help of the Caveman Wrestling club, began winning more and more matches. His self-confidence began to grow and he went from a mild and timid kid to one who walks with confidence and understanding of what he can accomplish! As I previously stated, we also have Gavin (6), who, from watching his brother, began wrestling. Over 2013 he gained his own confidence and became one of the best in the state in his age and weight bracket. On

12/29/2013 our boys entered into the Dixie Nationals in Atlanta Georgia. Dylan and Gavin were now in a tournament with the best wrestlers in the country. Gavin went into the semi-finals against a great wrestler from Tennessee with one thought on his young mind – he would not be beaten. The match took 4 overtimes to be decided, but my 6-year old Gavin refused to give up or even give an inch and was ultimately declared the winner! These two events in 2013 will never be forgotten, as we watched our children dig deep within themselves to accomplish the lofty goals they had set for themselves!

Hanover Floors – Building For America’s Bravest A huge 20 x 40 foot American flag was moved as the crowd shouted, “Move that flag!!!” The big reveal was for the home built near Mc Dill Air Force Base for Sgt. Michael Nicholson, a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan. The home was built under the Building for America’s Bravest, a program of The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, in proud sponsorship with the Gary Sinise Foundation. The program was developed to build smart homes for catastrophically injured service members. The home was presented to Sgt. Nicholson on January 9th, 2014. Hanover Floors owners Jim and Beth Nesbitt and partner, flooring manufacture Mohawk, provided the flooring and expert installation in this first home built in Tampa for Building for America’s Bravest. “It was an honor to be here and be a part of this home for one of America’s Bravest, Sgt. Nicholson. This is an inspiring organization that is making a difference and Hanover Floors Carpet One is proud to be part of it,” said Jim Nesbitt from Hanover. The Smart Homes built by Build-

ing for America’s Bravest are custom designed to fit the needs of each individual. The goal of each home is to help severely injured heroes live better, more independent lives. Smart Homes host a myriad of features, such as automated doors and lighting, wider doors, and special showers to accommodate wheelchairs, as well as cabinets and counters that can be raised and lowered, and central heating and air conditioning systems that can be controlled by iPads. “We’re so happy to have Carpet One and Mohawk on board with all our builds,” said Frank Siller, from Tunnels to Towers Foundation, at the Tampa ribbon cutting. The Tunnel to Towers foundation was founded to honor the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on 9/11. The legacy began when Siller was on his way to meet his three brothers to play golf. When he heard on his scanner what had happened at the World Trade Center, brave Stephen strapped on 60 lbs. of firefighter gear, rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic and ran from the

Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center site. Stephen was last seen with his fellow firefighters of Squad 1; all of who died saving others. Stephen’s loved ones organized the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The organization helped to establish the Tunnel to Towers Run, a living, breathing tribute to all that died on 9/11 and to those who serve in the line of duty to protect our country. Participants of the run retrace the final footsteps of heroic Stephen Siller from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center site. “We are excited to help this organization in any way we can,” said

Bill Gaddis, VP of National Accounts for Mohawk. “Providing flooring that will make these heroes’ lives a little easier is just the beginning.” “In addition to providing flooring for these homes, Carpet One an Mohawk will also be helping the organization through fundraising efforts and spreading the word,” said Beth Nesbitt from Hanover Floors Carpet One in Tampa.

The Trinity Spine Center Offers a Conservative Approach to Patient Care By Julie Kanehl If you’ve ever been injured in an accident, fallen, or simply had an injury because of work or play, you know how back pain can change the quality of your life in one fell swoop. The Trinity Spine Center is staffed by some of the most respected physicians and doctors in their field and their whole-patient, conservative approach to treatment yields positive results. Trinity Spine Center’s doctors are truly committed to taking the time that is necessary with each of their patients, and making sure that each patient gets the personalized medical attention that they deserve. Victor Hayes, MD, and Farhan Siddiqi, MD, both highly-esteemed spine surgeons in the area, are the cofounders of The Trinity Spine Center. Trinity Spine Center opened in 2006 on Hawbuck Street, and then in 2009, moved to its brand new 21,000square-foot, state-of-the-art facility at 2040 Short Avenue in Odessa, just off

of S.R. 54. The physicians at Trinity Spine Center treat patients who suffer with any kind of back, neck or spine pain, and have already successfully treated more than 15,000 patients. Their goal is to offer a variety of modalities for back pain under one roof, increasing patient care and improving on the communication that can be lost when patients traditionally see multiple doctors who do not work together. Whether you need chiropractic care or spinal surgery, it is all under one roof at the Trinity Spine Center. The Trinity Spine Center is very unique in its approach, and is at the forefront of stem cell research to reduce back pain. As a result, Trinity Spine Center draws patients from all over the state and the nation. It’s no surprise, because patients there have the opportunity to meet with surgeons and receive diagnostic testing, as well as receive chiropractic care, attend physical therapy and even receive pain management care all in one place, at

their very own Trinity Wellness Center, an integral part of Trinity Spine Center. Patients appreciate this ease of care, because when your back hurts, traveling all over town from one doctor to the Farhan Siddiqi, MD & Victor Hayes, MD next can be a difficult and Co-Founders of Trinity Spine Center painful thing to do. George, a Trinity Spine Center patient said, “I went tunnel to osteoporosis, Trinity Spine to see Dr. Hayes after I read an article Center patients are treated by a team about him. I thought I would need of highly educated and specifically back surgery after a car accident but trained professionals, who will work since I’ve been going to Trinity Spine together to get patients back on their Center, I am feeling much better and I feet in no time. patient care is the communication that we have with one another. We are never more than a phone call away and patients see that and really appreciate it.” Dr. J’s approach to wellness, exercise and nutrition is an inspiration to many patients at The Trinity Spine Center, and he encourages patients to realize that no matter their age, size or condition, regular exercise will contribute to their overall health and wellbeing. The Trinity Spine Wellness Center offers patients the least invasive approach to spine care including physical therapy, chiropractic care, decompression therapy and even nutritional services. Dr. Ronald F. Stacey II, DC, is a Board Certified Chiropractor, and has been with Trinity Spine Center since 2009. He says, “We have an array of specialties under one roof, and we can start conservatively and move each patient up to the next option if it’s necessary.” He adds, “It avoids having to have each patient see a chiropractor at one place, a primary at another, and so on. Here we can provide a plan of [total spinal] care.” Dr. Nathan A. Possert graduated from East Lake High School before honorably serving in the U.S. Navy

for 4 years in which he was Quarter master and a search and rescue swimmer. After serving in the Navy, he graduated with honors from St. Petersburg College in Tarpon Springs in 2004 and then transferred to the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training and graduated with honors in 2006. While attending graduate school, Dr. Possert was able to work with high school athletes part time in Pinellas County as an Athletic Trainer for two years. Since graduating with his Doctorate, Dr. Possert has worked in the outpatient facility setting full time and in the hospital setting part time. If pain management is necessary, patients are in good hands. Pain management is used carefully and responsibly at Trinity Spine Center. Dr. Casey J. O’Donnell, FAAPMR DABPM, specializes in the treatment of spasticity and dystonia, electromyography, and pain management. He utilizes an array of diagnostic tools to view the tissues in the body in order to see how the nerves in the body are functioning, and then he can perform procedures such as trigger point injections, nerve blocks, and ultrasound guided injections, just to name a few.

Dr. Ronald Stacey II

Dr. O’Donnell says, “As a physiatrist, my background is in rehabilitation and my goal is to get patients moving and back to a normal, active lifestyle.” A brand new approach to treating back pain is now available at Trinity Spine Center, and that is the use of stem cells for back pain. Dr. J says, “A whole lot of patients will benefit from this new and exciting approach.” He explains, “We are the only ones in the U.S. doing it like we do it, and we are also the only ones at this time who are FDA compliant.” Working closely with Daniel A. Grande, PhD., the Director of the upand-coming Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Trinity Spine Center, patients who suffer from arthritis, degenerative disk disease, and herniated disks may find relief through Stem Cell Therapy. Stem Cell Therapy is “an intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury.” This exciting new kind of therapy offers the possibility of pain relief, the renewal of tissues and the alleviation of pain. When Back Surgery is Necessary: Choose Trinity Spine Center When surgery is absolutely necessary, patients are in good hands with Drs. Siddiqi and Hayes, as both surgeons are experienced and qualified in performing even the most intricate of

spinal surgeries. On staff at the Medical Center of Trinity, both physicians received their Doctorates from the prestigious Cornell University in New York, followed by double fellowships at the Arizona Institute for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and the Maryland Spinal Reconstructive and Scoliosis Surgery Center. Both Dr. Hayes and Dr. Siddiqi are Board Certified in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery and both of them travel nationally teaching endoscopic surgery procedures to other doctors around the country. The Trinity Spine Center offers patients the most comprehensive care by having many different kinds of spine care health professionals on staff and in one place. The Trinity Spine Center’s physicians are committed to working together with each patient to produce the best possible results. “Ballyhoo” Continued from page 1 selections that both land-lovers and sealovers can enjoy. “From delicious burgers to the freshest seafood in town, we have it all; and no matter what you order it’s going to be great,” says General Manager and Head Chef Mike Hayes. Infusing his New Orleans style of cooking into many of the menu items, Chef Mike puts a spin on some of your classic favorites to create selections that have a completely new style and flare. Providing guests with a unique dining atmosphere, at Ballyhoo Grill in Tampa, you choose the experience you want to get – whether you unwind on their beautiful outdoor patio underneath the shade of their tiki huts, enjoy a romantic dinner in their intimate private dining room, or have a little fun at their bar as you sip on one of their signature cocktails. Ballyhoo has a full-liquor bar, complete with daily specials, and brags of some of the best sangria in town. From upscale entrees to casual lunches, this restaurant has it all! Mike says, “We offer guests fine dining in a casual atmosphere at a very reasonable price.” My husband and I are huge fishing fanatics, and as such, a yearly trip to the Keys is always marked on our calendar. Thus, we are very familiar with the Keys way of life. From the moment we walked through their doors, we were impressed with how well Ballyhoos embodied the Keys vision, and walking up the front porch we felt as if we had just come off of Duval street in Key West; all that was missing from this Keys-like experience was the ocean itself. After taking a peak at the completely revamped menu we were even more impressed with what they had to offer. Featuring soups such as their famous She Crab Soup and New Orleans Gumbo to Shrimp and Oystyer Po Boys, Prime Rib Phillies and Pulled Pork Sandwiches; they also have a deli-

For the veggie lovers out there, they have a great selection of salads, such as their Soy Glazed Tuna Chop Chop Salad, Salmon Ceasar Salad and Seafood Cobb Salad. But that is not all! Making up the other portion of the menu are pasta choices, such as their Seafood Pescatore and Lobster Mac and Cheese, entrees such as Filet Mignon, St. Louis Ribs and Chicken Piccatta, and of course, last but certainly not least – their seafood! Whether you are in the mood for raw Oysters, #1 sushi grade Tuna, a delicious Cedar Planked Salmon, Oak Grilled Scallops, Live Main Lobster, or Bimini Stuffed Grouper, you are sure to be pleased with your choice. Feeling a little adventurous? You also have the option to create your own fish entrée by selecting your fish and pairing it with one of their amazing sauces and preparations. Mike highly recommends you try their Citrus Champagne sauce – a favorite among guests at Ballyhoo Grill.

On our previous visit Mike suggested we try their Lobster Risotto stuffed Sea bass topped with Mango Chutney, and all I can say is WOW! “We have some of the best Sea Bass you will ever have,” adds Mike. The deliciously buttery flavor of the sea bass combined with the creamy risotto fill-

ing and sweet zing of the mango chutney made for an excellent trio, and cooked perfectly, the fish flaked off and simply melted in my mouth with each bite. This entrée was complemented with a side of vegetables – sautéed zucchini, squash and mushrooms in a pomodora sauce – that was really tasty.

Ballyhoo Grill has a laid-back island feel that instantly transports guests to the Florida keys. His second recommendation was the Swordfish topped with Jumbo Shrimp Scampi, and it was nothing short of amazing! This New Orleans style shrimp scampi presentation boasted a lemony sauce that perfectly complemented the flavor of the fish and, served with jumbo shrimp, each bite was an explosion of flavor. Once again served with the vegetable medley, this entrée is sure to please! In addition to their regular menu items, Ballyhoo also offers some excellent off-the-menu specials every week-

end. “Our weekend seafood specials are unbelievable,” says Mike. “They are so popular, we usually end up running out of a lot of our specials by the end of the weekend, so come in early to take advantage of what we have to offer.” The specials change weekly so stay up-todate by checking their Facebook page or Twitter. Show Your Sweetheart How Much You Care This Valentines Day! Looking to make a lasting impression this Valentines Day? Want to do something really special for your loved one or significant other? Local Tampa resident Andy Schrader has the perfect gift idea – a singing Valentine! Make your sweetheart the center of attention and really catch his or her attention with this one-of-a-kind, romantically wonderful singing Valentine! A barbershop singer, Andy is currently singing with the Heralds of Harmony barbershop chorus in Tampa. On Valentines Day, Andy, along with other members of his chorus will be performing Singing Valentines as part of a fundraiser for the Heralds, a 501c3 organization. Here’s how it works – a barbershop quartet dressed in tuxedos will show up unannounced at the “sweetheart’s” workplace or home (designated by the one who purchases the Singing Valentine), and sing

two love songs, “Let me call you sweetheart”, and “Heart of My Heart”. The sweetheart will then be presented with a personalized Valentines Day card, and a special Valentine Coffee Mug filled with chocolate kisses. Andy says, “this is one of the most fun days I have as a barbershop singer, as everyone at the workplace enjoys the festivity and the sweetheart becomes the center of attention.” This is really a memorable way to say “I Love You” on Valentines Day. For more information, you may contact Andy directly at 813-399-3505, or the Heralds of Harmony at 813-228-7730, or visit www.heraldsofharmony.org.
