Nine years ago, I was looking for a cleaning lady and found Donna. At that time she went by Donna’s Cleaning Service. She cleaned my home herself for about two years. They came into my home the first time and did a deep spring clean and was I ever blown away. I have never seen a cleaning service do the detail work these girls did. Donna sent four girls and they stayed for seven hours and my home is about 2700 sf. They hand washed all my baseboards, did the blinds in a three step process, washed every door and door frame in the whole house, moved every little knick knack and got into every little corner possible. Two weeks before I used a different service that promised a spring clean.

They sent two girls that stayed in my home for 2-½ hours. After throwing my money away I was referred to Donna by someone in Land o Lakes. I’ve told many people if you are looking for your home to be cleaned correctly, don’t waste your time on other maid services. Pinellas County Commission Approves East Lake Community Overlay The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously in a 7-0 vote on Jan. 24, 2012 in favor of approving the Community Overlay for the East Lake Community of 33,000 residents. The Board of County Commissioners will utilize a community overlay to define East Lake Tarpon as a cohesive community and their decisions will support the local vision, community character and natural environment of the area.

Small businesses support the residential character of the community.

Maintaining the community’s quality of life, low density residential character, and expansive open spaces is to be considered before any zoning changes or increased densities are considered. The next step in this process will be for the State to approve the document and then it will be incorporated into the Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan.

The Overlay document is the result of over two years of public meetings and collaborative planning sessions with the residents and businesses in the East Lake area. It joins three other community overlays the county has approved in Alderman Road, Tierra Verde and Ozona. It has been publicized in several newspaper articles and discussions with communities and businesses, service groups and posted on the CNCN website for discussion.

$750 to “Bring the Heat” Chili Cook Off Winners Ierna’s Heating & Cooling hosted their first annual “Bring the Heat” Chili Cook Off for the surrounding Lutz area Sat., Feb. 18, from 11a.m. – 2 p.m. This family fun event featured live music by Ferengata, a bounce house, raffles and five chili competitions that were free to the public! The chili contest had 27 entries in the competition. The event had seven celebrity judges: Clerk and Comptroller of Pasco County Dr. Paula O’ Neil, Tampa Bay Lightning’s Dave Andreychuk, Kansas City Chief’s Anthony Becht, USF’s Professor of Human Sexuality Dr. Dae Sheridan, Candidate for Pasco County Commissioner Ron Oakley, Bay News 9 anchor Rick Elmhorst, and Chef Ken Bolduc.

Seventy-five dollar prizes were awarded for each category: Ladies Choice won by Inspector’s Best: Affordable Home Inspections, Judge’s Choice won by Team Gates: Learning Gate Community School, “Feel the Heat” (hottest) won by Team Working Women of Tampa Bay: Norie Berndt , and the “Academy Award” for the most innovative was won by

The successful event had over 450 people in attendance! It was held at the new Ierna’s Heating & Cooling headquarters: 18843 US Hwy 41 North in Lutz near the old brick school house. “We are so pleased with the response from the community for our first event! Everyone seemed to have a fantastic time and we hope to make next year’s event even better,” said Charlene Ierna, Vice President of Ierna’s Heating & Cooling.

True to form, Ierna’s is giving back to the local area; proceeds from this event will benefit a local family in need of a heating and cooling system for their home. While the amount raised won’t fully cover a new system for a family, Ierna’s plans to donate the balance of the system to stand by their promise. Frances is a founding member of GFFFTA and of the Artists’ Atelier in

Great Falls, VA. Her work has been featured in ELAN Magazine. She is a graduate of Cornell University, and did graduate work at Boston University. The artist has studied internationally in Paris, Rome, Dublin, Caracas and Florence and at the Art League in Alexandria with Rob Liberace and Danni Dawson. She has also studied with Nelson Shanks and with Jim McGinley. Her paintings have won numerous awards and she has participated in many solo and group shows within the US and in Europe and Latin America. By Amy Paterson Muvico Theaters Palm Harbor 10, located at 37912 US Highway 19, has been a favorite venue for locals for the past 17 years. The comfortable and friendly home-town theater enjoyed by so many of us over the years was beginning to show a bit of wear, but not anymore! If you haven’t visited lately, you’ll feel like you are entering a brand new movie theater.

Muvico Palm Harbor 10 recently had a complete makeover and added several new features to further enhance your movie-going experience. Now equipped with three 3-D houses, one D-BOX house, and completely new surround-sound speakers; Muvico Palm Harbor 10 is taking audiences to a whole new level of entertainment.

Going to the movies is always a great treat; a little block of time to let your mind escape the everyday and indulge in bigger-than-life action while watching favorite stars on the big screen. There is something nostalgic about the smell of freshly popped popcorn thick in the air as you enter to

I was 13 years old in 1995 when Muvico opened in Palm Harbor. In addition to great drinks, Mixers has an excellent food menu with daily specials. This is not your typical “bar food.” Mixers’ food is fresh and made to order. Daily food specials are made directly from Tony and Nancy’s own recipe books, such as roasted leg of lamb, corned beef sandwiches, soups made from scratch, and freshly

made chicken salad. The regular menu consists of some all-time favorite foods like chicken wings, burgers, grouper sandwiches, shepherd’s pie, and so much more.

Tony brings a taste of Ireland to Palm Harbor, as he is an Irishman true and through. He says, “It’s not an Irish Pub, but a pub run by an Irishman.” There is a day this month that you would think Mixers were a true Irish pub, and that is St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Every Detail Counts when Creating Japanese Cuisine at the Lazy Maguro Restaurant

By Julie Kanehl Sushi is meant to be an art form created by masters of their craft who have been taught for many years by another master, and is then taught master to apprentice, generation after generation. The culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and an incredible eye for detail can be seen in the beautifully prepared dishes at the Lazy Maguro Japanese Restaurant, where sushi and dumplings are their specialties.

This brand new restaurant is located in the Brooker Creek Shopping Center (between Publix and Vetture’s Restaurant & Pizzeria. While this Japanese Fusion restaurant has taken the place of a similar style restaurant, Lazy Maguro is an entirely different experience. The good news is spreading, and Lazy Maguro is becoming known for providing diners with an amazing array of Japanese cuisine that is authentic, fresh, and really delicious.

Owner and Master Sushi Chef, Rexley Kwok, is a true artist when it

comes to the food he prepares. Kwok creates food that is as beautiful to look at as it is to taste. Kwok’s sushi bar is complete with refrigerated compartments for each of his ingredients. He says, “I use only the finest sushi-grade fish and the freshest ingredients.”

Kwok began working in the restaurant business in 1999, which is where he met his mentor, Hiro Ida San, who is a Master Sushi Chef from Tokyo. Hiro Ida San takes on only a few students, and Kwok was one of the lucky few who have had the opportunity to work and learn under his tutelage. After five years of working with his mentor, Kwok became the Master Sushi Chef at the Fuji Japanese Restaurant in Boca Raton, and then the Jadefire Japanese restaurant in Hudson before opening Lazy Maguro.

Kwok is at the center of this restaurant, and he carefully created the entire menu himself. His radiant

personality is prevalent in every aspect of the dining experience, and customers enjoy coming back to visit with him.

The beautifully designed dining room and accompanying sushi bar provide plenty of seating for small or large parties, and the Japanese motif sets the perfect tone for a night out with that someone special, a girls’ night, or a healthy family dinner. One thing is for sure, there is something for everyone on this menu.

Maguro has an offering of elegant sushi/salad fusion dishes that are perfect as an appetizer or as a part of a larger meal. To give you an idea, there’s a sushi sampler, a seaweed salad, and something called an Ika Poki, which is a raw squid, masago, seaweed and cucumber salad that is served with poki sauce.

Many people mistakenly believe that sushi means “raw fish,” but sushi literally means “vinegared rice” in Japanese. Sushi can be made with any number of ingredients, cooked or raw, and often includes vegetables, fish and wasabi or cream cheese. When sushi is made properly, it is like eating a present that explodes with flavor. Every time you take a bite, the different tastes blend together and create an experience that is a bit addictive.

“I wanted to learn the art of making sushi, and was very happy when I got to work with my master,” says Kwok, who enjoys educating anyone who is interested in Japanese cuisine.

He explains that Sushi is a delicate balance of fresh ingredients, texture and temperature saying, “Sushi is meant to be eaten fresh.”

The sushi is large by local standards, and unique in that every ingredient can be tasted. It’s almost like a fine wine in that each element works

together to complement the next. The portions are generous, and there are many different kinds of sushi rolls to choose from including common favorites like the California Roll, the Shrimp Tempura Roll, and the Spicy Tuna Roll. In addition to traditional favorites, Lazy Maguro also offers specialty sushi rolls like the Dragon Roll, which is made of shrimp tempura, masago, krab stick, inari, cream cheese and topped with avocado and eel sauce. The Buccaneer Roll, the Miami Heat Roll, and the Tropical Wild rolls are also very popular. The Tropical Wild Roll has a delightful infusion of fruit mixed in with traditional sushi ingredients, and it is an absolute musttry! In addition to rice-on-the-outside sushi, seaweed sushi is also available, as well as Cuki style sushi , which is a very healthy sushi meal made with a cucumber shell that is cut into sheets as thin as paper, and without the rice.

“My motto is that every detail counts. Every piece of rice is important when making sushi,” says Kwok.

In summary, the sushi portion of the menu at Lazy Maguro is impressive. Every item is accompanied by a detailed explanation of what the sushi roll is made out of. In fact, the sushi menu will also tell you whether the sushi is raw or cooked, which makes

newcomers feel a lot better about trying something new!

Kwok makes his customers feel welcome and comfortable from the start. Together with his mother and brother, and an almost entirely American wait staff, customers can feel comfortable enjoying their sushi experience, whether they are trying it for the very first time, or coming back because it’s their favorite.

If you are in the mood for something other than sushi, there is a lot to choose from. The dumplings at Lazy Maguro are unique and delicious.

Dumplings can be made with pork, chicken or seafood centers, and prepared in a number of ways. Their most popular dumpling is the “Asian Ginger Style” Dumpling, which is topped with Asian sweet and sour sauce and shredded ginger, but their other offerings are just as popular. There’s a BBQ inspired dumpling called the “Cheesy Porky Style,” the “Spicy Azuki Style” is covered with miso sauce and azuki beans, and a “Dynamite Style” includes baked scallops, mayo and masago, topped with Italian cheese, and that’s just to name a few of them. Lazy Maguro’s dumplings are plump, tender and tasty.

In addition to traditional sushi and dumplings, Kwok also offers a de-

licious tempura menu that includes chicken, eggplant, and calamari. The tempura batter is crispy and light, making high marks with people who love Asian cuisine. There’s also a Teriyaki section and a noodle section on the menu, which means that there is something for everyone.

After dinner, you must try one of their delicious dessert options, one of which is an absolute must. It’s called the Cinnamon Sin. Looking for something fun? How about Mochi? It’s an Asian treat that is ice cream in a soft candy shell that you can eat with your hands!

He moved here from the northeast and even though he has only been with Trinity Spine Center since January 3 of this year, he says that he has already bonded with many patients. Brown Bag Lunches of Pinellas – A Grassroots Non-Profit to Help Feed the Homeless

By Katie Thomas Pulling up to my family’s house and walking through the front door always gives me a sense of comfort and well-being. It’s my safe-haven; a place to run to when I need to be squeezed in tight, a laugh from my younger brothers or a hot meal from my mama’s kitchen. I can always find exactly what I’m looking for when I walk through my parents’ eccentric golden door. I know that I am blessed and fortunate to have such a place to call home. Last semester I attended a class with a woman whom I believed to be of extraordinary, humble character. Maria Johannesen taught our class that an idea can be turned into a lifechanging reality with the right gumption and spirit to back it up.

In 2011 Maria noticed statistics showing a high unemployment rate within Pinellas County and an even scarier number of people living without homes. The homeless population grew to reach 5,887 last year; 2,110 of

the homeless recorded were children attending Pinellas County public schools. Maria committed herself to putting a grassroots organization together that would feed the homeless and hungry throughout Pinellas County.

Maria posted on Facebook her idea of preparing simple brown bag lunches and distributing them to the homeless on Independence Day. She received a phenomenal amount of feedback and as a result she gathered up some friends and got to work putting 250 brown bag lunches together to hand out on Independence Day. “On July 4, 2011, with the kindness of the Salvation Army in South Saint Petersburg in allowing us to use their kitchen, we succeeded beyond our 250 goal; instead preparing 578 bag lunches,” says Maria. “This had a ripple effect that day because of our lunch bags. The Salvation Army was able to feed their residents and individuals still out in the street. By the end of the day 1,012 homeless indi-

viduals were fed. It was the best Independence Day for me and the 27 volunteers, celebrated with many tears and sense of community!”

A few months later, Maria and her crew began the process of preparing 1,000 brown bag lunches for another event on November 19, 2011.

Brown Bag Lunches of Pinellas was successfully able to adopt seven surrounding shelters into the program, ultimately allowing for a much larger impact. CASA, Touched by an Angel Ministries, Alpha House for Pregnant Women, Pinellas County Homeless Coalition, HEP, Pinellas Hope, and ASAP Homeless Services were all involved in the preparation and distribution of feeding thousands of the homeless. Brown Bag Lunches once again exceeded their goal in preparing 1,461 brown bag lunches with these help of the shelters agreeing to open their soup kitchens for those still out in the street.

Maria says, “We received feedback from two of those shelters, in which,

when combined with our bags, 2,271 homeless were fed – a great success!”

Maria explained that this was the day that the crew realized that Brown Bag Lunches of Pinellas needed to become a non-profit. Brown Bag Lunches of Pinellas successfully gained 501(c)3 status as a non-profit organization in February 2012.

Maria explains, “Since then, we adopted Touched by an Angel Ministries for Christmas, providing over

30 children with 3-5 gifts each. Now, we are working on our next big event on March 24, 2012, with a goal of preparing 3,000 brown bag lunches.�

A brown bag lunch includes peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich, a granola bar, a bottle of water and an individual sized apple sauce. Brown Bag Lunches also provides parents with baby cereal and jar food along with their lunch bag.

She and the volunteers of Brown Bag Lunches of Pinellas are looking forward to an even bigger 2nd Annual Independence Day for 2012.
