ter than the “big guys.” Competition is not a bad thing. A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and above all, low prices. For example, there are hundreds of restaurants within any given city, some of which operate right next to each other. This is necessary in a thriving economy. Can you imagine if there was only one type of each business in each town? The price of a cheeseburger would be astronomical! Entrepreneurship is what fuels

By Matthew Selby In today’s rough economy, small local businesses are closing their doors on a daily basis, while many big corporate businesses still have the investors and financial backing to pull through. There is nothing wrong with national companies by any means, but by spending our money in locally owned businesses we can help our local economy flourish instead of decline. When we spend money locally, we contribute to the wellbeing of the entire community. Local businesses build strong vibrant towns, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made by people who live in the community and thus will feel the impact of each decision they make directly. Many local businesses recycle excess revenue by giving back to the community in which they live, which enriches the area and creates an even better place to live and love. Community News Briefs Eclipse Salon and Spa Asks You to “Walk For Those Who Can’t” The Make A Wish Foundation – which helps children with a life-threatening illness to experience a dreamcome-true occasion – has touched the lives of a local salon owner and a stylist at her salon, Eclipse Salon and Spa in Lutz. These two women are heading up “Walk For Those Who Can’t,” in an effort to raise funds for the organization that has meant so much to them and their families. Eclipse Salon and Spa owner Rita Loveless and stylist Pam French have seen first-hand what the Make A Wish Foundation can do for a child. Rita’s daughter Alyssa was granted a wish when she was 10 years old. Alyssa benefited greatly from having a swimming pool built in her backyard, as it allowed her to exercise on a daily basis. Pam’s nephew Tyler was 11 when his wish was granted. He was granted a media room. Tyler was on a ventilator and unable to attend school, and the media room allowed him to take his classes online. Rita says, “Having a wish granted

6

doesn’t change the fact that your child has a life-threatening illness, but it does show that someone cares. It’s a day of complete joy for the child, and as the parent of a child with an illness it’s hard to do the fun things (financially). It takes the focus off of the medical and survival aspects, and focuses on the fun.” Pam shares her nephew’s experience, “This was the one time he really got spoiled. Strangers donated without knowing him to make him happy.” Rita and Pam have set a goal to raise $3,000 for the Make a Wish Foundation because they want to pay it forward, not just financially, but also by raising awareness for such a great cause. “It’s a charity where you know how the money is used, and that it’s going to benefit someone,” said Rita. The three-mile “Walk For Those Who Can’t” fun-walk/run will take place on the Suncoast Trail on Sunday, April 15. The time is yet to be determined. Folks can participate by donating to the Eclipse Salon and Spa team, or by organizing a team of their own.

Their involvement helps bring hope that, together, we can eliminate cancer as a major health problem.” When you volunteer for the American Cancer Society, you can make a meaningful difference in your community by helping cancer patients and their families while building relationships and networks that last a lifetime. The money raised helps people reduce their risk of cancer; provides free programs and services for cancer patients; funds groundbreaking research; and makes sure cancer remains a priority issue for elected officials. Come and join the Angel Family! See what some of our loyal customers have to say! $75 OFF Deep Spring Cleaning Special on 20 years in the business to Donna and her teams. C ongratulations Donna and The Cleaning Angels initially came to my home in 2010 to offer an evaluation of my cleaning needs. It took only one visit to recognize that their service was considerably different than my previous ones. Their reliability, honesty and dedication to excellent service has proven itself again and again. -Michelle Marquis, Clearwater, Florida We have used The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service for the past two and a half years. Every two weeks we are more than satisfied with the service especially with Ileah who has been the head of the cleaning team that services our home. Their work is a very thorough professional cleaning. They are always prompt, courteous, trustworthy and willing to adapt to our schedule. Along with the regular cleaning each time, they include the baseboards, light fixtures and ceiling fans, blinds and much much more. Our home is always sparkling every time. -Sue and John Kelly Wyntree, New Port Richey, FL I hired the Cleaning Angels over a year ago to help keep my house clean, so I would have time to pick up more shifts at work, to help make ends meet. On my initial interview with Donna Ferrante, she came to my home and we walked through the house together. She gave details of her business and work ethic and expectations for customer satisfaction. Donna and her staff are extremely personable and very professional. I feel like everyone cares if I am satisfied or not. The Cleaning Angels staff has gone above and beyond to work with my husband and my difficult work schedules. I highly recommend the Cleaning Angels to assist in housing maintenance. They do a great job, they are reasonably priced, and with the time I save from having to clean the house myself, I am able to pick up extra shifts at work and do other errands and chores. Love, Love, Love!!!! -Jennifer Mugianis, Tarpon Springs, FL We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we ever got by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna; she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her company would be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be delivered because it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message was loud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has provided the phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. Our regular team, Ivonne and Anna are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done. Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me! -Esther and Michael Halman, Crescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs, FL

Before I started with the Cleaning Angels, I had tried numerous cleaning services. I was never happy with the results until I met Donna six years ago. She actually was still cleaning herself at that time. Congratulations for expanding your business and making it to 20 years. The service is always excellent - they are prompt, efficient, professional, and their appearance is always great. They always have the correct products and equipment and their attention to detail goes above and beyond. My current lead is Ileah and she has been cleaning my house for several years and I just love her. I am very active in the Trinity community and have recommended the Cleaning Angels to many people. -Sandy Alekson, Champions Club, Trinity, FL

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Nine years ago, I was looking for a cleaning lady and found Donna. At that time she went by Donna’s Cleaning Service. She cleaned my home herself for about two years. When she broke her foot and had to hire girls to help out, I initially was concerned. However that concern was short lived as Donna trains her girls to clean exactly like she does. Since then these girls come into my home and do their magic. I have many disabilities and they go way beyond to make sure that my house is clean and that I am happy. They do special things for me to make my life easier. I want to thank Sandy who use to clean my home and now is in the office with Donna. Congratulations for all your accomplishments Donna! -Fran Mischler, Port Richey, FL I have had the great pleasure of hiring and being in the company of the Cleaning Angels Cleaning Service. They are incredibly accommodating and have superior customer service. I have rarely come across a service organization that is so professional and extremely pleasant to work with. Every time "the Angels " come to my house, it gets better and better. Budget cuts have hit the majority of Americans, but I will give up other things before I would ever consider giving up "my Angels". -Tina Redmond, Keystone Bluffs, Tarpon Springs, FL The Cleaning Angel has been a consistent and dependable cleaning service, working around our family, house guests and home construction. They have been responsive to our special requests and once they know what we like, they provide great value added customer service. I would recommend them to others. -Susan Rolston, East Lake Woodlands, Oldsmar, FL I was looking for a cleaning service and was referred to The Cleaning Angels. I didn’t think they would come this far but called them anyway and they were more than happy to put me in their schedule. I live a 440 West and the girls are cleaning up this town. There have been a lot of unhappy people in the Clearwater Beach area and now word is out. We finally found the best. Congratulations Donna and so happy to have found you. -Katherine Sullivan, Clearwater Beach, FL As far as I am concerned there is only one cleaning service in the Tampa Bay area and that is the Cleaning Angels. They came into my home the first time and did a deep spring clean and was I ever blown away. I have never seen a cleaning service do the detail work these girls did. Donna sent four girls and they stayed for seven hours and my home is about 2700 sf. They hand washed all my baseboards, did the blinds in a three step process, washed every door and door frame in the whole house, moved every little knick knack and got into every little corner possible. Two weeks before I used a different service that promised a spring clean. They sent two girls that stayed in my home for 2-½ hours. After throwing my money away I was referred to Donna by someone in Land o Lakes. I’ve told many people if you are looking for your home to be cleaned correctly, don’t waste your time on other maid services. Call the Cleaning Angels if you want it done right and you will never have to find anyone else. Congratulations on your 20 years and hope you have many, many more. -Betty Bennett, Odessa, FL

She graduated from the University of South Florida (USF) with her Doctorate in Experimental Psychology and has served in the past as an adjunct professor in courses involving audiology. Journal and was rated in its Best of 2005 edition as being of primary importance to hearing aid clinicians. Dr. Reese is licensed by the State of Florida Department of Health and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology, and holds membership in the American Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, the Florida Academy of Audiology and the Florida SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association, along with many other prestigious affiliations; patients can trust that they will receive the highest level of service at JC Audiology. “I know how important hearing is for overall quality of life,” says Dr. Reese. “Maintaining hearing health keeps our brains stimulated, which offers us overall happiness in our primary health.” A huge motivator for Dr. Reese is helping individuals keep communication methods flowing and assisting patients in understanding the processes involved in improving listening skills. Dr. Reese explains, “Hearing loss is typically gradual, so many people mentally adjust for the loss until they hit a threshold where

MARCH 2012

they can't depend on natural hearing anymore. A lot of times 7-10 years will go by with that auditory deprivation leaving the temporal lobe in the brain un-stimulated.” Dr. Reese is very in tune with working with patients on an individual level. “We all have different preferences for volume and sound,” says Dr. Reese. “Taking the time to get to know my patients allows me to understand an individual’s preferences and make the necessary adjustments to their hearing aid for the best possible sound result.” Dr. Reese finds her work very gratifying when she can help a patient reach a level of hearing that they had never thought possible. She refers to the treatment she provides patients as “a hearing journey.” It's a process that takes time because the brain has to re-acclimate to all the sounds it has been missing, but the journey is worth it in the end, and sometimes accompanied by tears of joy from patients and their family members who can hear so much more clearly with their hearing aids. The importance in taking care of your hearing is a health issue that we should all be aware of. Recent studies show the early onset of dementia can be linked to hearing loss. Mental health is affected by unaided hearing loss and can cause issues such as depression, isolation and social anxiety. Many times people mistake hearing loss with the onset of age, but this is far from the case. More and more teens and children are experiencing loss of hearing due to higher decibel volumes in the use of MP3 players. Dr. Reese strongly suggests coming in for an evaluation if you experience any of the following symptoms: having trouble understanding speech; asking others to repeat themselves; need the TV louder

Come to Pizza Villa for the Best Greek Pizza in Town By Julie Kanehl Pizza Villa has been serving Greek favorites and Greek style pizzas to locals in our area for almost 25 years, and it has been a staple to residents as the Lutz area has multiplied in size over the years. Conveniently located on S.R. 54 just east of Hwy 41, Pizza Villa has a unique flavor that keeps customers coming back again and again. The restaurant’s owner, Bill Fotopoulos, has always owned Pizza Villa, and also owns the local chain of ABC Pizzas. Wanting to create a restaurant that would incorporate more of his Greek heritage, he opened Pizza Villa. Restaurant Manager Cheryl Will has been there from the beginning, and has had a hand in everything from creating the menu and working with the staff (many of which have been there almost as long as she has), to making the rice pudding every day. She says, “Our staff is really amazing!” Customers really enjoy the Greek inspired dining room and the family friendly atmosphere. More than just a pizza place, the menu is quite large and has an authentic sampling of Greek favorites like Baked Chicken, Mousaka and Briam. Every day there are lunch

specials and dinner specials in addition to their regular menu, and customers really enjoy that happy hour is all day and every day at Pizza Villa. Mary Hardy said, “I really like their Spinach Pizza, it’s my favorite.” Cheryl says, “Our customers are great. We have a lot of regulars, but we also see a lot of new faces.” Great Beginnings Appetizers include everything from traditional Italian and American fare like Mozzarella Sticks and Jalapeno Poppers to specialties like their Eggplant Fries and Spanakopita, which is a delicious Greek pie perfect for sharing. specialty that is popular, which is rice wrapped in grape leaves, sautéed in olive oil and lemon, and served with tomatoes, feta cheese, Greek olives and peppers. If you’re in the mood for soup, their homemade Greek Bean Soup is made with a white northern bean and a tomato base, and simmered to perfection with onion, celery, and carrots. This vegetarian Greek soup is a favorite with many regulars who come in just to have the soup. In addition to Greek Bean Soup, they also offer Potato-andHam, Chicken-and-Rice, and Chicken Orzo soups – all of which are amazing! A Greek restaurant wouldn’t be complete without the signature Greek salad, and Pizza Villa will not disappoint. The Greek Salad is made with garden fresh lettuce, sliced tomato wedges, feta cheese, Greek peppers, Kalamatta olives, scallions, parsley, red cabbage, cucumber slices and ham; potato salad is served on the side. They serve large portions at Pizza Villa, and the large Greek Salad will serve up to four people. There are other salad options as well, such as house salad, tuna salad, chicken salad and garden salad.

Greek Pizza and Greek Specialties Greek pizza is made using olive oil in the crust. Olive oil gives the pizza a delicious taste and allows this medium style crust to have the perfect amount of crunch when you bite into it. Very similar to traditional pizza, the Greekstyle pizza just adds that something special! Traditional toppings are always available, and the chefs in the back are very accommodating when it comes to ordering the perfect personalized pizza to suit your family’s tastes. The Specialty Pizzas are a huge hit at Pizza Villa, which include a White Pizza made with mozzarella and white cheddar cheese and a Tour of Greece, made with feta cheese, or their Spinach Pizza which is simply delicious. The House Special calls for sausage, meatball, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers. If you want to try something truly unique, get the Steak Lovers pizza, which is topped with steak, onions, mushrooms and a garlic sauce. Many customers love the pizza, but can’t eat an entire pie, so they order the Pita Pizza Express, which is a perfectly portioned pizza for one, or they order a calzone. Made to order with your favorite ingredients, these are

While pizza is in the name of the restaurant, many customers prefer to come for the other items on the menu, such as the Eggplant or Chicken Parmesan, the Baked Ziti, the Lasagna or the Fettuccini Alfredo. Greek specialties include Gyros, Souvlaki, Greek Style Baked Chicken, Mousaka (layers of fresh eggplant, potato and ground beef covered with a rich béchamel sauce), and Briam (baked layers of eggplant, zucchini, potato, onion, tomato and feta). They also serve grinders (hot subs) in every style, which are great for lunch or for dinner. Trinity Spine Center Takes Patient Care to New Heights here,” explains Dr. Jorit Wijnmaalen, DPT, MBA, MTC, who is the Director of the Trinity Spine Wellness Center. “One of the most important aspects of our patient care is the communication that we have with one another. We are never more than a phone call away and patients see that and really appreciate it.”

By Kim Thomas If you’ve ever suffered from spinal pain, then you have already had a glimpse of how debilitating it can be. Spinal pain affects virtually every aspect of one’s life, compromising mobility and body function. Sometimes surgery is necessary, but in many cases it can be completely avoided. When you need to be evaluated by a doctor for spinal pain, it makes sense to visit a facility where every aspect of your care is addressed in one location. Trinity Spine Center and Trinity Spine Wellness Center, located at 2040 Short Avenue in Odessa (just off of SR 54), offers everything patients need to get moving again, all in one location. Not only specializing in the treatment of every type of spinal disorder, the everexpanding Trinity Spine Center helps patients with a great variety of needs, from carpal tunnel to rehab for sports injuries, and more. Victor Hayes, MD, and Farhan Siddiqi, MD, opened Trinity Spine Center in November 2006 and in 2009 the doctors planned and built a state-of-the-art facility that is designed

26

to put the needs of patients first. Trinity Spine Center and Trinity Spine Wellness Center patients enjoy the convenience of having all of their care onsite – from diagnostic tests to physical therapy, chiropractic care, responsible pain management and rehabilitation. Patients also have access to the nutritionist/dietitian, who teaches them to make better food choices for optimum health. The spine surgeons at Trinity Spine Center realize that surgery is not always the only solution to a problem. Dr. Siddiqi and Dr. Hayes agree that their primary goal is to improve each patient’s pain and discomfort with conservative care, where possible. Depending upon the severity of the problem, spinal surgery may be the only option; if so, Dr. Hayes and Dr. Siddiqi are two of the finest surgeons in the region who focus on managing their patients’ care beyond the operating room. They have put together an exceptional team of physicians who work with one another to ensure that every patient is getting the best care possible. “We have a shared philosophy

Patient Appreciation Trinity Spine Center’s doctors truly appreciate their patients and make every effort to let patients know it, and in turn, the patients are very happy overall. “We recently did a survey and got back 250 responses and out of those 100 percent said that they would refer a friend or family member,” explains Dr. “J” Wijnmaalen. “And 96 percent say that the doctors spend an adequate amount of time with them.” Here is another statistic that speaks volumes: Dr. Wijnmaalen says that 93-94 percent of Trinity Spine Center’s patients show major improvement without surgery. Trinity Spine Center is hosting its 3rd Annual Patient Appreciation Day and Open House on April 7, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Like last year’s event, there will be fun for all, plenty of good food and refreshments, an Open House, and informational lectures regarding chiropractic, nutritional and spinal care. Dr “J” is heading up the event and has some new things planned for this year. The Ironman competitor teases, “I exercise just a little.” In an effort to help folks realize that exercise can be fun and beneficial, Dr. “J” has planned a 5K and a onemile “run/walk/crawl.” He says, “We want everyone to

“Accounting” Continued from page 1 businesses, preparation of payroll and sales tax reports, as well as assisting in wealth creation, IRAs, annuities and life insurance. Marcus will not only look out for your financial wellbeing, by giving sound advice on tax-saving strategies and ways to efficiently achieve your financial goals, but he will also help protect you from potential audits. At Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc., you will get personalized one-on-one service in a comfortable environment with an accountant you can trust to have the experience and knowledge necessary to provide excellent care of your financial bottom-line. Marcus Hernandez has more than 25 years of experience in all aspects of accounting for individuals and small businesses and is not only great with numbers, but people as well. Marcus graduated from Barnard M. Barach College in New York with a B.S. in Accounting and thus began his career as an accountant in New York. He started at Arthur Anderson and quickly ventured out on his own at a young age; his attention to detail, knowledge of tax laws, and warm personality won

him many clients who are still with him today. Additionally, Marcus is a fully licensed insurance broker and provides his clients with even more savings on their life, disability, and long-term care insurances, while helping them to secure their assets. Also, as an annuity broker, he gives his clients insightful advice on retirement and investment plans that fit their individual needs. Despite his move to Florida, Marcus kept 90 percent of his clients who still live in New York and who don’t let the distance get in the way of their long-standing relationship with Hernandez Accounting. Over the years Marcus has established an extremely strong customer base spreading all across the country and these long-term clients understand that finding an accountant you can count on is not easy and when you do find one, such as Marcus, you should consider yourself very fortunate. “Hernandez Accounting is the only choice for us,” states Dr. Khalid Saeed, DO, at Oakstead Medical Center and Clarity Med Spa. “Marcus is very knowledgeable and we could not function without him. We trust him with our business and with our personal tax needs. I can’t imagine going to someone else.”

Marcus, along with the rest of the Hernandez team, has a real passion for helping people and enjoys the feeling of knowing that he is doing everything he can to provide his clients with the best service available. Staying current with the fluctuating tax laws is of utmost importance to Marcus and he regularly attends seminars and keeps himself up-to-date with any changes. He is a QuickBooks Pro Advisor and specializes in helping his business clients set up their bookkeeping, payroll and financial records, helping them to efficiently run their business and increase productivity. Tax Changes That Affect Your Bottom Line With so many last-minute changes made to current tax codes for the 2011 year, filing your own taxes is no longer so simple and most taxpayers are left with more questions than answers. Due to the complexity in tax laws, Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc. has experienced a significant surge in new clients who have previously prepared their own taxes. 2012 is looking even more complex, with new changes in payroll taxes, alternative minimum tax, health care credits for small businesses, etc. Although many of the tax rates and forms remain unchanged, there

have been numerous alterations in available credits and deductions for most taxpayers. Some changes taking place for the 2011 and 2012 tax years include modifications to those filing as individuals such as: personal exemptions, standard deductions, income tax rates, the alternate minimum tax, the personal exemption phase-out, child and dependent care credit, and earned income tax credit. If you are like most taxpayers who are left in confusion by all these last-minute changes, Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc. is here to help take care of all the paperwork and provide you with hassle-free tax filing. For more information regarding tax modifications, please visit www.HernandezAccounting.com. Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc. is a family business and therefore places great importance on building strong, reliable relationships in the local community. “We can give you one-onone service in a close-knit, friendly environment,” states Marcus. At Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc., you have an accountant who will take the time to examine your individual finances so that every care is taken to minimize your taxes and maximize your profits – just as it should be.
